1,2-Dihydroxybenzene melts at 105 degrees Celsius, boils at 245.5 degrees Celsius and dissolves at 43 grams per 100 millilitres of water, according to the [International Chemical Safety Card](https://www.inchem.org/documents/icsc/icsc/eics0411.htm), so plants ship it as white flake and store it dry. The 1,2-dihydroxybenzene market, also called the catechol or pyrocatechol market, covers merchant and captive sales of technical flake and high-purity pharmaceutical grade made mostly by phenol hydroxylation. Douglas Insights sizes it at USD 89.1 million in 2025, from 51,200 tonnes at an average USD 1.74 per kilogram, and expects USD 135.5 million in 2035, a revenue CAGR (compound annual growth rate) of 4.28%. The newest supply came on 18 December 2025, when Clean Science and Technology told the National Stock Exchange of India that its subsidiary Clean Fino-Chem had [commercialised hydroquinone and catechol](https://nsearchives.nseindia.com/corporate/CLEAN_18122025121738_Intimation_of_Commercialisation__HQ_Catechol_18122025.pdf) in a dedicated block. The study belongs to our [specialty chemicals](https://www.douglasinsights.com/industry/chemicals-materials/specialty-chemicals/) coverage and follows the Douglas Insights [research methodology](https://www.douglasinsights.com/research-methodology/).

## Why are vanillin and guaiacol producers buying more 1,2-dihydroxybenzene?

1,2-Dihydroxybenzene tonnage grows 3.18% a year to 2035 in our base case, and flavour chemistry supplies 1.24 points of it. Guaiacol, veratrole and vanillin all start from catechol, so every extra tonne of synthetic vanillin pulls fresh flake through phenol hydroxylation plants in Asia and Europe.

### Vanillin and guaiacol: 1.24 points

Flavour and fragrance intermediates are the biggest outlet for 1,2-dihydroxybenzene. Camlin Fine Sciences told analysts on its [May 2024 earnings call](https://nsearchives.nseindia.com/corporate/CAMLINFINE_27052024150536_BSE_NSE_Transcript_letter.pdf) that it planned 2,500 tons of vanillin a year at about USD 9 to USD 9.5 per kilogram, made from its own catechol. Clean Science said its new catechol will be used captively for guaiacol and veratrole. Douglas Insights estimates flavour routes took 20,300 tonnes of 1,2-dihydroxybenzene in 2025, and their growth adds 1.24 points to the 3.18% volume leg.

Integration explains the pull. Camlin management said catechol sold on the merchant market lost almost Rs. 100 per kilo in 2024, while the same catechol turned into vanillin earned about Rs. 80 per kilo, a swing of Rs. 180. At a target of 40% to 50% vanillin plant utilisation in FY25, every captive tonne beats a merchant tonne, so 1,2-dihydroxybenzene producers keep adding guaiacol and vanillin steps rather than selling more flake.

### Crop protection intermediates: 0.71 points

Agrochemical intermediates add 0.71 points. UBE describes its catechol as a pharmaceutical and agrochemical intermediate, and insecticide and herbicide makers in India and China buy flake by the drum. Douglas Insights counts 12,400 tonnes of agrochemical demand in 2025, which grows more slowly than flavour use at 3.62% in value because crop protection makers launch few new catechol-based actives.

### Tert-butyl catechol inhibitors: 0.68 points

Polymerisation inhibitors add 0.68 points. Tertiary butyl-catechol (TBC) keeps styrene and butadiene from polymerising in tanks and tankers, and Solvay listed TBC beside hydroquinone and MEHQ at Saint-Fons when it raised European hydroquinone capacity by 20% on [26 March 2019](https://www.solvay.com/sites/g/files/srpend221/files/Solvay%20increases%20Hydroquinone%20capacity_EN_FINAL_0.pdf). Butadiene feeds the rubber in our [Solution Polymerized Styrene Butadiene Rubber (SSBR) Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/polymerized-styrene-butadiene-rubber-ssbr-market/) study. Our model puts inhibitor demand at 9,100 tonnes in 2025.

### Pharmaceutical synthesis: 0.55 points

Pharmaceutical intermediates add the last 0.55 points, through high-purity 1,2-dihydroxybenzene used in active pharmaceutical ingredient syntheses. Volumes are small, about 5,700 tonnes, but each tonne sells at a premium. The four contributions, 1.24 + 0.71 + 0.68 + 0.55, add to the 3.18% volume leg, and the restraints below are already netted out.

## What hinders 1,2-dihydroxybenzene margins when Chinese phenol hydroxylation lines run full?

Three restraints remove 0.83 points from 1,2-dihydroxybenzene volume growth, which would otherwise run at 4.01% a year. Chinese oversupply, the co-product lock with hydroquinone and tighter worker exposure controls each cut tonnage or margin, and Chinese pricing hurts the most.

Oversupply takes 0.41 points. Camlin Fine Sciences said on its [May 2024 call](https://nsearchives.nseindia.com/corporate/CAMLINFINE_27052024150536_BSE_NSE_Transcript_letter.pdf) that catechol prices fell from USD 2 to below USD 1 per kilogram in FY23, and blamed predatory pricing and excess supply by Chinese producers. It booked a Rs. 36.81 crore provision on catechol inventory and its derivatives. Low prices close marginal lines rather than lift volume.

The co-product lock takes 0.27 points. Phenol hydroxylation gives catechol and hydroquinone together: the Rhone-Poulenc acid route yields about 1.4 parts catechol per part hydroquinone and the TS-1 route about 1 to 1, a 2024 review in [Catalysts](https://www.mdpi.com/2073-4344/14/12/930) reports. 1,2-dihydroxybenzene output therefore follows hydroquinone demand, not its own.

Exposure controls take 0.15 points. Catechol carries a skin notation and a 5 ppm limit, so small dye and photographic users switch to safer chemistries. Douglas Insights calculates that the 0.83-point gap removes about 7,900 tonnes from 2035 demand.

## Which 1,2-dihydroxybenzene end use makes the money, from guaiacol to tert-butyl catechol?

Flavour and fragrance intermediates make the most money, USD 35.3 million or 39.6% of 2025 1,2-dihydroxybenzene revenue, and they grow fastest at 4.96% a year. Vanillin and guaiacol plants run on captive catechol, so the segment carries the steadiest offtake.

| End use | Share 2025 | Value 2025 | Growth 2026-2035 | Value 2035 |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Flavour and fragrance intermediates | 39.6% | USD 35.3 million | 4.96% | USD 57.3 million |
| Agrochemical intermediates | 24.3% | USD 21.7 million | 3.62% | USD 30.9 million |
| Polymerisation inhibitors | 17.8% | USD 15.9 million | 4.41% | USD 24.4 million |
| Pharmaceutical intermediates | 11.2% | USD 10.0 million | 4.85% | USD 16.0 million |
| Specialty uses | 7.1% | USD 6.3 million | 2.38% | USD 8.0 million |

Flavour and fragrance intermediates reach USD 57.3 million by 2035. Guaiacol is methylated catechol, and vanillin follows from guaiacol, so integrated makers capture the most value per tonne of flake.

Agrochemical intermediates hold 24.3%, worth USD 21.7 million, and grow 3.62% a year to USD 30.9 million. Slow launches of new actives cap the rate.

Polymerisation inhibitors take 17.8%, or USD 15.9 million, growing 4.41% a year. TBC dosing rises with every new styrene and butadiene tank farm.

Pharmaceutical intermediates are worth USD 10.0 million at 11.2%, and grow 4.85% a year to USD 16.0 million. Purity specifications keep their price per kilogram above technical flake.

Specialty uses, covering dyes, photographic developers, electroplating and antioxidants, form the smallest slice at 7.1% and USD 6.3 million. They grow only 2.38% a year as exposure controls push users to substitutes.

## Where is 1,2-dihydroxybenzene consumed, and why does Asia Pacific grow fastest?

Asia Pacific consumes the most 1,2-dihydroxybenzene, USD 44.9 million in 2025, and grows fastest at 4.95% a year. China and India hold most phenol hydroxylation capacity and most captive vanillin and agrochemical lines, so demand sits next to supply.

Asia Pacific reaches USD 72.8 million by 2035, a 50.4% share today. New Indian blocks at Camlin and Clean Fino-Chem add captive offtake, while Chinese plants sell flake to the rest of the world.

Europe is worth USD 20.2 million in 2025 and grows 3.42% a year to USD 28.3 million. Saint-Fons in France anchors European diphenol output and its TBC and vanillin chains.

North America holds USD 13.9 million, rising 3.71% a year to USD 20.0 million. Solvay runs its Baton Rouge site there, and styrene inhibitor demand on the Gulf Coast supports the region.

Latin America is the wildcard at USD 5.9 million, growing 4.40% a year to USD 9.1 million, because Brazilian crop protection makers buy agrochemical intermediates in volume.

The Middle East and Africa form the smallest region at USD 4.2 million, growing 2.52% a year to USD 5.4 million, with demand mainly from formulators of imported intermediates.

## Which companies run catechol and hydroquinone co-production at scale?

Six companies define 1,2-dihydroxybenzene supply, and Douglas Insights estimates the top three, Solvay, Camlin Fine Sciences and UBE, hold 46.8% of 2025 revenue. Chinese phenol hydroxylation plants supply most of the rest and set the merchant price.

| Company | Base | What the position is built on | Estimated share 2025 |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Solvay | Belgium | Diphenol plants at Saint-Fons, Baton Rouge and Zhenjiang, integrated into vanillin | 19.6% |
| Camlin Fine Sciences | India | Dahej hydroquinone and catechol plant, captive vanillin | 14.7% |
| UBE | Japan | Catechol flake for pharmaceutical and agrochemical intermediates | 12.5% |
| Clean Science and Technology | India | New block commercialised December 2025, captive guaiacol and veratrole | 3.9% |
| Enichem process licensees | Italy | TS-1 hydroxylation, 10,000 tonnes a year at Ravenna | Not estimated |
| CFS Wanglong | China | Camlin joint venture, plant being repurposed to heliotropin | Not estimated |

Solvay calls its Aroma Performance unit the world's largest integrated producer of vanillin, with plants on 3 continents, in Saint-Fons, Baton Rouge and Zhenjiang, as its [2019 release](https://www.solvay.com/sites/g/files/srpend221/files/Solvay%20increases%20Hydroquinone%20capacity_EN_FINAL_0.pdf) states. Douglas Insights puts its 1,2-dihydroxybenzene share at 19.6%, anchored on that vanillin integration.

Camlin Fine Sciences began commercial production of hydroquinone and catechol at Dahej on 21 September 2020, and its management said on the [2024 results call](https://nsearchives.nseindia.com/corporate/CAMLINFINE_27052024150536_BSE_NSE_Transcript_letter.pdf) that the plant ran at about 80% of capacity. It sells 2,500 to 3,000 tons of catechol on the open market and turns the rest into vanillin. Our estimate gives it 14.7%.

UBE sells catechol as white flaky powder registered under EINECS 204-427-5 and TSCA, aimed at pharmaceutical and agrochemical customers; Douglas Insights estimates 12.5%. Clean Science and Technology entered on 18 December 2025, per its [NSE notice](https://nsearchives.nseindia.com/corporate/CLEAN_18122025121738_Intimation_of_Commercialisation__HQ_Catechol_18122025.pdf), and holds about 3.9% on a part-year basis, with its 9M FY2026 capital spending of about Rs. 165 crore going mainly into Clean Fino-Chem. The Enichem TS-1 route at Ravenna runs at 10,000 tonnes a year with a 1 to 1 catechol ratio. CFS Wanglong, Camlin's Chinese venture, is moving its plant to heliotropin.

## How much does a kilogram of 1,2-dihydroxybenzene fetch after the 2023 price slide?

1,2-Dihydroxybenzene sells for an average USD 1.74 per kilogram in 2025 on our model, inside a band from below USD 1 for Chinese technical flake to several dollars for pharmaceutical grade. Phenol accounts for nearly 70% of production cost, so phenol prices set the floor.

| Grade or reference | Price band | Basis |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Catechol, FY23 fall | USD 2 to below USD 1 per kg | Camlin Fine Sciences call |
| Hydroquinone co-product, 2024 | USD 4.5 to USD 5 per kg | Camlin Fine Sciences call |
| Technical flake, 2025 | USD 1.05 to USD 1.60 per kg | Douglas Insights estimate |
| High-purity pharmaceutical grade, 2025 | USD 3.40 to USD 5.80 per kg | Douglas Insights estimate |
| Vanillin made from catechol, 2024 | USD 9 to USD 9.5 per kg | Camlin Fine Sciences call |

Hydroquinone, the twin product, fell from USD 9 to USD 10 per kilogram in FY23 to USD 4.5 to USD 5 in 2024, per the [Camlin transcript](https://nsearchives.nseindia.com/corporate/CAMLINFINE_27052024150536_BSE_NSE_Transcript_letter.pdf). Douglas Insights projects the blended 1,2-dihydroxybenzene price to rise 1.07% a year, to USD 1.94 per kilogram by 2035, as high-purity grades gain share and Chinese capacity additions slow.

## How does phenol hydroxylation set the 1,2-dihydroxybenzene to hydroquinone ratio?

Phenol hydroxylation with hydrogen peroxide converts only 5 to 25 mol% of phenol per pass and fixes 1,2-dihydroxybenzene output at 1 to 1.4 tonnes per tonne of hydroquinone. Producers choose a catalyst, not a product, so catechol supply follows the twin.

The Rhone-Poulenc route uses perchloric or phosphoric acid, reaches 5 mol% conversion and 90 mol% selectivity, and gives about 1.4 parts catechol per part hydroquinone. The Brichima route uses iron and cobalt Fenton reagents, with 10 mol% conversion and 80 mol% selectivity. The Enichem route runs over a titanium silicalite (TS-1) catalyst at 90 to 100 degrees Celsius, converts 25 mol% and splits output 1 to 1.

Low conversion means large phenol recycle loops and distillation trains, which is why the boiling point gap between catechol at 245.5 degrees Celsius and phenol matters to plant design. A producer that needs more hydroquinone must make more catechol, whatever the catechol price.

## How exposed is the Indian vanillin chain to imported 1,2-dihydroxybenzene?

India now makes 1,2-dihydroxybenzene at 2 sites, Camlin at Dahej since 2020 and Clean Fino-Chem since December 2025, which Douglas Insights reckons covers most of its roughly 6,800 tonnes of 2025 use. Imports from China still set the price.

Clean Science described its December 2025 start as import substitution, with demand traction from becoming a key domestic maker of hydroquinone and catechol, in its [exchange filing](https://nsearchives.nseindia.com/corporate/CLEAN_18122025121738_Intimation_of_Commercialisation__HQ_Catechol_18122025.pdf). Camlin earlier imported hydroquinone from Italy with 49 days of transit. Domestic supply shortens the chain for Indian vanillin, guaiacol and TBHQ makers.

## Which exposure limits and chemical rules govern 1,2-dihydroxybenzene handling?

1,2-Dihydroxybenzene carries a NIOSH recommended exposure limit of 5 ppm, or 20 mg per cubic metre, over 8 hours, with a skin notation, the [OSHA chemical data page](https://www.osha.gov/chemicaldata/160) shows. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) lists it in Group 2B.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has set no permissible exposure limit, while the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) threshold limit value is 5 ppm with an A3 notation, and California applies 5 ppm. Catechol is listed under EINECS 204-427-5 in Europe and registered on the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) inventory in the United States. Handling rules add enclosed flaking, dust extraction and glove protocols to every 1,2-dihydroxybenzene plant.

## What if 1,2-dihydroxybenzene co-product surplus persists to 2035?

1,2-Dihydroxybenzene ends 2035 between USD 111.5 million and USD 163.5 million across our cases, around a base of USD 135.5 million. Surplus Chinese flake is the main swing, because it decides both price and how many merchant lines stay open.

| Case | Volume leg | Price leg | 2035 value |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Slower | 1.84% | 0.42% | USD 111.5 million |
| Base case | 3.18% | 1.07% | USD 135.5 million |
| Faster | 4.47% | 1.71% | USD 163.5 million |

In the slower case, hydroquinone expansions keep flooding the catechol pool and price barely moves. In the faster case, captive vanillin and guaiacol lines such as the one Clean Science [opened on 18 December 2025](https://nsearchives.nseindia.com/corporate/CLEAN_18122025121738_Intimation_of_Commercialisation__HQ_Catechol_18122025.pdf) absorb surplus flake. One extra point of tonnage growth adds USD 13.7 million to 2035 value; one point less removes USD 12.6 million.

Published forecasts for catechol, alone or with hydroquinone, run between 2.2% and 6.5% a year. Our 4.28% lands near the middle, because price recovery is slow after the FY23 collapse.

## Douglas Exclusive: the 1,2-dihydroxybenzene co-product ledger

The 1,2-dihydroxybenzene co-product ledger is a Douglas Insights model built from 14 sourced inputs: demand counts for 2017 and 2020, process ratios, a plant capacity, hydroquinone volume, company prices and offtake disclosures. It balances potential co-product output against end-use demand.

| Ledger line | Tonnes | Basis |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Hydroquinone volume, 2023 | 81,000 | Catalysts review |
| Catechol co-output at 1 to 1 | 81,000 | TS-1 ratio, upper bound |
| Catechol co-output at 1.4 to 1 | 113,400 | Acid route ratio, upper bound |
| 1,2-dihydroxybenzene demand, 2025 | 51,200 | Douglas Insights model |
| Flavour routes | 20,300 | Douglas Insights model |
| Agrochemical routes | 12,400 | Douglas Insights model |
| Inhibitor routes | 9,100 | Douglas Insights model |
| Pharmaceutical routes | 5,700 | Douglas Insights model |
| Specialty routes | 3,700 | Douglas Insights model |

The ledger treats all hydroquinone as if it came from phenol hydroxylation, so the co-output lines are ceilings, not counts. Even so, the finding is sharp: if half of the 81,000 tonnes came by hydroxylation, catechol co-output would match the 51,200 tonnes of demand with little room for new merchant capacity.

The five end-use rows add up to 51,200 tonnes. Captive flavour routes take 39.6% of tonnage, which is why integrated vanillin makers keep running when merchant catechol sells below cost.

## Which grades and derivatives sit inside the 1,2-dihydroxybenzene scope?

The 1,2-dihydroxybenzene scope includes 2 grades, technical flake and high-purity pharmaceutical grade, valued at first sale or captive transfer. Derivatives such as guaiacol, vanillin and TBC stay outside, so the 51,200 tonnes count catechol once.

Hydroquinone, resorcinol and finished drugs are excluded. Captive tonnes are priced at the merchant flake value. Readers following aroma chemicals can compare our [L Menthol Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/l-menthol-market/) report, and polyphenol buyers our [Tannic Acid Food Grade Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/tannic-acid-food-grade-market/) study. By grade, the split is technical flake and high-purity pharmaceutical grade; by route, phenol hydroxylation dominates.

## How was the 1,2-dihydroxybenzene methodology built from 51,200 tonnes and USD 1.74 a kilogram?

Our methodology multiplies 51,200 tonnes of 2025 demand by USD 1.74 per kilogram to reach USD 89.1 million. Volume grows 3.18% and price 1.07%, and (1.0318 x 1.0107) - 1 gives the 4.28% revenue rate to USD 135.5 million.

The 1,2-dihydroxybenzene model covers 24 countries in 5 regions and uses 58 data points. Arithmetic: 51,200 x 1.74 / 1,000 = 89.1; 89.1 x (1.0318 x 1.0107)^10 = 135.5. Our model anchors tonnage on demand of 40,000 tonnes in 2017 and an expected 44,000 tonnes in 2020, a 3.23% yearly rise.

Three cross-checks agree. First, extending 44,000 tonnes from 2020 at 3.08% a year gives our 51,200 tonnes, close to the 3.23% rate of 2017 to 2020. Second, Camlin's 2,500 to 3,000 tons of merchant catechol plus its captive vanillin need sits within our 14.7% share. Third, our USD 1.74 average lies between the sub USD 1 Chinese flake price and pharmaceutical grade bands.
