## Key takeaways

- AI robot toys are worth USD 3.13 billion in 2025, from 22.84 million units at an average USD 137.2.
- The base case reaches USD 8.84 billion by 2035, a 10.93% revenue CAGR from 9.64% volume and 1.18% price growth.
- Educational and coding robots lead with 36.4% of 2025 value, while AI conversational plush and desktop companions grow fastest at 15.18% a year.
- Asia Pacific holds USD 1.31 billion, 41.7% of value, and grows fastest at 12.91% as China's AI toy makers scale at home.
- The top three sized brands hold about 2.1% of value, and new COPPA and EU toy rules raise the cost of chat features for children under 13.

Every AI robot toy sold in the European Union from 1 August 2030 will need a digital product passport and a safety assessment that covers children's mental health, because [Regulation (EU) 2025/2509 on the safety of toys, adopted on 26 November 2025 and published on 12 December 2025](https://eur-lex.europa.eu/eli/reg/2025/2509/oj/eng), replaces the old toy directive and points connected products at the AI Act. AI robot toys are toys with a robotic or animated body and an artificial intelligence layer, such as speech recognition, a large language model or computer vision. The AI Robot Toy Market covers coding robots, robot pets, talking plush and desktop companions, and humanoid entertainment robots, valued at retail prices. Our receipt: 22.84 million units at an average USD 137.2 each equals USD 3.13 billion in 2025, rising to USD 8.84 billion by 2035 at a 10.93% revenue CAGR. ## Which companies win AI robot toy sales, from Miko and UBTECH to KEYi Tech's Loona?

No company holds even 2% of AI robot toy value: Douglas Insights estimates the top three brands it can size, Miko, KEYi Tech and UBTECH, at about 2.1% of 2025 value combined. Hundreds of Shenzhen and Hangzhou makers, school robotics suppliers and licensed toy brands share the remaining USD 3.07 billion of a USD 3.13 billion market.

| Company | Disclosed figure | Position built on | Estimated share of 2025 value |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Miko | 700,000+ robots sold; Rs 358 crore revenue in the year to March 2024 | Miko robots for ages 5 to 11 plus the Miko Max subscription | 1.4% |
| KEYi Tech | More than 90,000 Loona robots sold worldwide | Loona robot pet at USD 499 | 0.5% |
| UBTECH | RMB 48.0 million from 12,759 non-embodied humanoid robots in 2025 | Small humanoid and education robots | 0.2% |
| Robopoet | Roughly 100,000 Fuzozo units sold | AI plush companion at 399 yuan | 0.2% |
| Sphero | BOLT+ at USD 199; 15-robot Power Pack at USD 3,499 | Coding robots sold to schools | not disclosed |
| Mattel | OpenAI collaboration announced | Barbie, Hot Wheels and Fisher-Price licences | no AI product shipped |

Miko is the clearest scale player. The company says on its [own about page](https://miko.ai/pages/about-us) that it has sold more than 700,000 robots, and its last filed revenue, Rs 358 crore for the year to March 2024, converts to about USD 42.9 million at INR 83.5 per dollar, a 1.4% share of 2025 value on our estimate. Subscriptions are its second engine: Miko Max costs USD 14.99 a month or USD 99 a year, so each robot keeps earning after the sale.

UBTECH shows how small toys are inside a robot company. [Its 2025 annual results, filed on 31 March 2026](https://www1.hkexnews.hk/listedco/listconews/sehk/2026/0331/2026033102607.pdf), report RMB 2.00 billion of revenue, up 53.3%, but only RMB 48.0 million from 12,759 non-embodied humanoid robots, the small Alpha-type machines closest to a toy. Full-size humanoids for factories earned RMB 820.6 million from 1,079 units, so UBTECH's growth now comes from industry, not play. KEYi Tech has sold more than 90,000 Loona robot pets, and Douglas Insights puts its 2025 robot pet revenue near USD 17.1 million.

Sphero anchors the classroom with the BOLT+ coding robot, and Sony keeps a premium robot dog line in aibo. TangibleFuture shipped more than 10,000 LOOI desktop robots at around USD 150 each, 90% of them overseas, and Robopoet sold roughly 100,000 Fuzozo plush companions, both on figures published by the [Shenzhen municipal government](https://www.sz.gov.cn/en_szgov/news/infocus/aisz/news/content/post_12548803.html). FoloToy, maker of the Kumma bear, is now better known for the safety failures listed below than for its sales. Smart speakers and hubs that share the same voice chips are covered in our [Smart Home Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/smart-home-market/) study.

## Which AI robot toy category makes the money: coding robots, robot pets or talking plush?

Educational and coding robots make the most AI robot toy money, with 36.4% of 2025 value or USD 1.14 billion, because schools and parents buy them as learning tools. AI conversational plush and desktop companions grow fastest at 15.18% a year, as large language models turn a soft toy into a talking friend.

| Category | Share 2025 | Value 2025 | Growth 2026-2035 | Value 2035 |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Educational and coding robots | 36.4% | USD 1.14 billion | 7.61% | USD 2.38 billion |
| Companion and robot pets | 27.9% | USD 874.3 million | 12.86% | USD 2.93 billion |
| AI conversational plush and desktop companions | 21.3% | USD 667.5 million | 15.18% | USD 2.74 billion |
| Humanoid and transformable entertainment robots | 14.4% | USD 451.2 million | 6.07% | USD 813.5 million |

Educational and coding robots hold USD 1.14 billion and grow 7.61% to USD 2.38 billion, slower than the market because school budgets move in multi-year cycles. Companion and robot pets carry USD 874.3 million and reach USD 2.93 billion at 12.86%, since products such as Loona sell to adults and grandparents as well as children. AI conversational plush and desktop companions account for USD 667.5 million and grow fastest, at 15.18% to USD 2.74 billion, because a cloud chatbot costs a plush maker little and lifts the shelf price several times. Humanoid and transformable entertainment robots make up USD 451.2 million and grow only 6.07% to USD 813.5 million, the slowest line, as high prices limit them to collectors and gift buyers.

End users split four ways in our model: children under 8, children 8 to 12, teens and adults, and schools. Douglas Insights values the children 8 to 12 group at 38.7% of 2025 spending, children under 8 at 26.2%, teens and adults at 19.6% and schools at 15.5%. Toys for the youngest children follow different rules and buyers, covered in our [Baby Toy Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/baby-toy-market/) report.

## Why are AI robot toy unit sales growing 9.64% a year as chatbots move into plush and pets?

AI robot toy unit sales grow 9.64% a year to 2035, from 22.84 million in 2025 to 57.33 million, as chatbots, China, classrooms and adult buyers add volume. Gross volume growth is 11.29% before restraints. Two restraints take it down to the 9.64% used in our base case, so units rise about 2.5 times over the decade.

### Large language models in the toy box

Conversational AI adds 3.88 points of yearly volume, the largest driver. A plush or desktop robot that answers open questions sells to families who never bought a coding robot, and the bill of materials barely changes: a microphone, a speaker, a Wi-Fi chip and a cloud contract. TangibleFuture shipped more than 10,000 LOOI robots at around USD 150 each, 90% of them abroad, which shows how fast a small maker can reach export buyers. Mattel's collaboration with OpenAI signals that the largest toy brands want the same feature, even though its first product has slipped.

### China's domestic AI toy boom

Chinese demand adds 2.71 points. The [Shenzhen municipal government](https://www.sz.gov.cn/en_szgov/news/infocus/aisz/news/content/post_12548803.html) reports that China's AI toy market reached 24.6 billion yuan in 2024 and is expected to reach 29 billion yuan in 2025, a 17.9% rise, while toy exports totalled USD 39.87 billion. Robopoet's Fuzozo plush, priced at 399 yuan, ranked first in AI toy sales on JD and Tmall during the Double 11 festival, and Robopoet targets 1 million units. Douglas Insights counts USD 1.02 billion of 2025 AI robot toy value in China, about 25.0% of that wider 29 billion yuan AI toy total.

### Coding classrooms and adult companions

School coding curricula add 1.86 points. A teacher buys robots by the class set: Sphero sells its BOLT+ at USD 199 each or USD 3,499 for a 15-robot Power Pack, about USD 233.3 per robot including the charging case. Each new curriculum year renews a fleet, and every class pack lifts unit counts by 15 at once. Adult and elder companion buyers add the final 1.19 points. Robot pets such as Loona and aibo are bought by adults for themselves or for older parents, which widens the market beyond the toy aisle. Together the drivers sum to 11.29 points before restraints: 3.88 from chatbots, 2.71 from China, 1.86 from classrooms and 1.19 from adult buyers, less 1.65 points of restraints, for the 9.64% volume leg.

## Which hurdles slow AI robot toy adoption, from senators' privacy probes to novelty churn?

Two hurdles remove 1.65 points of yearly AI robot toy volume growth: child-safety and privacy scrutiny takes 0.94 points and novelty churn takes 0.71. Chinese price competition removes a further 0.83 points from the price leg, cutting gross price growth of 2.01% to 1.18%.

Safety scrutiny is the heaviest drag at 0.94 points. On [17 December 2025, Senators Marsha Blackburn and Richard Blumenthal wrote to six toy makers](https://www.blackburn.senate.gov/2025/12/technology/blackburn-blumenthal-press-toy-makers-on-ai-powered-toys-exposing-children-to-inappropriate-content), including Mattel, Miko, Curio Interactive, FoloToy and Keyi Robot, after testers found the Kumma bear discussing sexual content and giving step by step instructions on lighting a match. Mattel and OpenAI had announced their collaboration in June 2025, yet no Mattel AI robot toy reached shelves for the 2025 holiday season. Each headline of this kind slows retailer listings and parental trust. Trust is the product.

Novelty churn removes 0.71 points. Many AI robot toys are played with intensely for weeks and then left on a shelf, so repeat purchase is weak and returns are high. Douglas Insights estimates that 31.4% of 2025 AI robot toy units were bought as one-off gifts with no app login after 90 days, which caps replacement demand. Price pressure from Shenzhen makers then holds the average selling price to USD 154.3 by 2035.

## Where do AI robot toys sell best, and which region grows fastest to 2035?

Asia Pacific sells the most AI robot toys, USD 1.31 billion in 2025 or 41.7% of value. It also grows fastest, at 12.91% a year to USD 4.40 billion, because China's AI toy makers sell first to their home market, which the Shenzhen government puts at 29 billion yuan for all AI toys in 2025.

North America holds USD 958.9 million and reaches USD 2.40 billion at 9.62%, led by the US gift season and school coding programmes. Europe stands at USD 601.7 million and grows 8.43% to USD 1.35 billion, the slowest region, as the new toy regulation raises compliance costs. Latin America totals USD 144.1 million and grows 10.96% to USD 407.7 million on online marketplace sales in Brazil and Mexico. The Middle East and Africa holds USD 122.2 million and reaches USD 282.2 million at 8.73%, mostly through imported coding robots and robot pets. India is the wildcard: Miko is based in Mumbai, and a domestic price war in Indian AI robot toys would lift Asia Pacific volume well above our base case.

## How much do parents pay for an AI robot toy and its monthly subscription?

Parents pay an average USD 137.2 for an AI robot toy in 2025, but realised prices run from about USD 56 for a Chinese AI plush to USD 530 for a small humanoid. Subscriptions add USD 99 to USD 180 a year on top of the robot for families who keep the content running.

| Product | Realised or list price | Category |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Robopoet Fuzozo | 399 yuan, about USD 56.2 | AI conversational plush and desktop companions |
| TangibleFuture LOOI | around USD 150 | AI conversational plush and desktop companions |
| Sphero BOLT+ | USD 199 single; USD 233.3 per robot in a 15-pack | Educational and coding robots |
| KEYi Tech Loona Premium | USD 499 | Companion and robot pets |
| UBTECH non-embodied humanoid | RMB 3,762 average, about USD 530 | Humanoid and transformable entertainment robots |
| Miko Max subscription | USD 14.99 a month or USD 99 a year | Content add-on |

The UBTECH figure is our arithmetic: RMB 48.0 million of revenue divided by 12,759 units in [the company's 2025 annual results](https://www1.hkexnews.hk/listedco/listconews/sehk/2026/0331/2026033102607.pdf) gives RMB 3,762 per robot. Our price leg of 1.18% a year takes the AI robot toy average from USD 137.2 to USD 154.3 by 2035. Premium robot pets push the blend up, while plush companions near USD 56 pull it down. Mix decides the average.

## Which sales channels move AI robot toys, from online marketplaces to education distributors?

Online marketplaces move 57.8% of AI robot toy value in 2025, about USD 1.81 billion, because a talking robot needs a video demo and reviews before parents pay USD 100 or more. Specialty and toy retail takes 29.4% and education distributors 12.8%, the latter almost all coding robots.

Specialty and toy retail carries USD 921.3 million, concentrated in the fourth quarter gift season, when shelf space for AI robot toys competes with collectibles and building sets. Education distributors sell USD 401.1 million, mostly class packs of coding robots priced like Sphero's USD 3,499 Power Pack. Douglas Insights expects online marketplaces to reach 63.5% of AI robot toy value by 2035, as Chinese makers sell direct on JD, Tmall and cross-border platforms.

## How do COPPA and the EU toy safety rules reshape AI robot toy design?

Two rules now shape every AI robot toy with a microphone: the US COPPA amendments, with most compliance due on 22 April 2026, and the EU toy regulation, applying from 1 August 2030. Both make cloud chat features costlier to run for children under 13.

The [Federal Trade Commission finalised its Children's Online Privacy Protection Rule (COPPA) amendments on 16 January 2025](https://www.ftc.gov/news-events/news/press-releases/2025/01/ftc-finalizes-changes-childrens-privacy-rule-limiting-companies-ability-monetize-kids-data) by a 5-0 vote. Operators now need separate parental opt-in consent before sharing a child's data with third parties for targeted advertising, and they cannot keep children's personal information indefinitely. Biometric identifiers now count as personal information, which reaches every AI robot toy that recognises a face or a voice.

In Europe, [Regulation (EU) 2025/2509](https://eur-lex.europa.eu/eli/reg/2025/2509/oj/eng) turns the toy directive into a regulation applied directly in all 27 member states. Toys must carry a digital product passport reachable by QR code, and safety assessments must now consider the mental health risks of digitally connected toys. AI features also fall under the AI Act. Douglas Insights expects compliance work to add about 2.6% to the European unit cost of an AI robot toy by 2030.

## What if chatbot plush booms or a child-safety recall hits: AI robot toy forecasts for 2035?

Our AI robot toy scenarios run from USD 6.34 billion to USD 11.91 billion in 2035 around a USD 8.84 billion base. The slower case cuts volume growth to 6.85% and price to 0.42%; the faster case lifts them to 12.10% and 1.95%.

The base case pairs 9.64% volume with 1.18% price. A recall or ban after another incident like the one in the [senators' letter of 17 December 2025](https://www.blackburn.senate.gov/2025/12/technology/blackburn-blumenthal-press-toy-makers-on-ai-powered-toys-exposing-children-to-inappropriate-content), plus strict reading of the [EU toy regulation](https://eur-lex.europa.eu/eli/reg/2025/2509/oj/eng) mental health test, produces the slower USD 6.34 billion. Fast chatbot adoption in plush and a Mattel launch at scale point to the faster USD 11.91 billion. Adding one point to yearly unit growth lifts the 2035 value to USD 9.69 billion; removing one point leaves USD 8.07 billion, a spread of about USD 810 million per point. Our 10.93% sits below the 11.5% to 14.7% band in published forecasts, because we count retail value only for toys with a robotic body and net out novelty churn.

## Who buys AI robot toys beyond children: schools, adults and elder-care families?

Teens, adults and schools buy 35.1% of AI robot toy value in 2025, about USD 1.10 billion, because coding robots and robot pets appeal to classrooms, hobbyists and older people living alone. Children under 12 still buy the other 64.9%, worth about USD 2.03 billion.

Schools account for 15.5% of 2025 value, or USD 485.7 million, mostly through education distributors buying coding robots in class sets. Teens and adults take 19.6%, or USD 614.2 million, and robot pets dominate that group. KEYi Tech markets Loona for family companionship and remote monitoring, a pitch aimed as much at adult children of elderly parents as at kids. Douglas Insights projects the adult share of AI robot toy value to rise to 23.8% by 2035 as companion robots spread.

## Douglas Exclusive: the AI Robot Toy Safeguard Exposure Index

The AI Robot Toy Safeguard Exposure Index is a Douglas Insights model built from 14 sourced inputs: 3 regulatory documents, 6 company disclosures and 5 published market data points. It scores each category from 0 to 100 on four features that trigger the new rules: always-on microphones or cameras, open-ended generative conversation, a core buyer under 13 and dependence on a cloud service.

| Category | Index score | Share of 2025 value | Share of 2035 value |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| AI conversational plush and desktop companions | 86 | 21.3% | 30.9% |
| Companion and robot pets | 71 | 27.9% | 33.1% |
| Humanoid and transformable entertainment robots | 54 | 14.4% | 9.2% |
| Educational and coding robots | 38 | 36.4% | 26.8% |
| Value-weighted AI robot toy market | 59.7 in 2025; 65.2 in 2035 | 100.0% | 100.0% |

The index finds that exposure rises as the AI robot toy market grows. Categories scoring above 60 hold 49.2% of 2025 value but 64.0% of 2035 value, so the value-weighted score climbs from 59.7 to 65.2. The fastest-growing products are the ones most likely to need separate parental consent, written data retention rules and an EU mental health assessment. Coding robots, scored 38, are the safest bet on compliance.

## Which receipts and cross-checks support the AI robot toy unit model?

Our AI robot toy model multiplies 22.84 million units by USD 137.2 to reach USD 3.13 billion in 2025. Volume grows 9.64% and price 1.18% a year, giving 10.93% and USD 8.84 billion in 2035 from 57.33 million units at USD 154.3.

We count 5 regions and 22 countries, 4 product categories and 31 data points. Cross-check one: China at USD 1.02 billion equals 25.0% of the 29 billion yuan Chinese AI toy figure, which also covers non-robotic AI plush and chips, so a share near a quarter fits our narrower scope. Cross-check two: Miko's 700,000 cumulative robots at an assumed blended USD 230 equal about USD 161 million of lifetime sales, against our 2025 total of USD 3.13 billion. Cross-check three: published 2024 to 2025 estimates for AI robot toys sit near USD 5.2 billion, 66% above ours, because they use a wider definition that counts more non-robotic connected toys. Five regions and four categories reconcile to the global row in 2025 and 2035, with category totals within 0.2% in 2035.
