China produced 35.03 million tonnes of primary aluminum in the first nine months of 2026, up 3.8% on a year earlier, after a full-year 2025 total of 45.02 million tonnes, up 2.4%, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) [release of 20 October 2026](https://www.stats.gov.cn/english/PressRelease/202610/t20261020_1965665.html) and its [2025 statistical communiqué of 28 February 2026](https://www.stats.gov.cn/english/PressRelease/202602/t20260228_1962661.html) show. The Asia Pacific aluminum metal market covers primary and alloyed unwrought aluminum sold to fabricators in the region: extrusion billet, standard ingot, rolling slab, foundry alloy ingot, wire rod and high-purity metal, from regional smelters and imports. Douglas Insights sizes it at USD 139.32 billion in 2025, about 51.60 million tonnes at an average USD 2,700 a tonne, USD 161.35 billion in 2026 as exchange prices climb, and USD 208.31 billion in 2035, a 2.88% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) from 2026. The study is the Asia Pacific part of our worldwide [Aluminum Metal Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/aluminum-metal-market/) model and sits beside our [U.S. Aluminum Metal Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/u-s-aluminum-metal-market/), [Asia Pacific Aluminum Casting Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/asia-pacific-aluminum-casting-market/), [Aluminum Extrusion Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/aluminum-extrusion-market/) and [Metal Recycling Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/metal-recycling-market/) reports; every figure follows the Douglas Insights [research methodology](https://www.douglasinsights.com/research-methodology/).

## Which Asia Pacific aluminum metal product form earns the most: extrusion billet, standard ingot or rolling slab?

Extrusion billet earns the most, 33.0% of 2025 Asia Pacific aluminum metal value or about USD 45.98 billion, Douglas Insights estimates. Wire rod grows fastest, at 4.6% a year from 2026 to USD 19.35 billion by 2035.

| Product form | Share 2025 | Value 2025 | CAGR 2026-2035 | Value 2035 |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Extrusion billet | 33.0% | USD 45.98 billion | 3.3% | USD 71.31 billion |
| Standard ingot | 25.0% | USD 34.83 billion | 2.0% | USD 48.21 billion |
| Rolling slab | 18.0% | USD 25.08 billion | 3.0% | USD 37.89 billion |
| Foundry alloy ingot | 11.0% | USD 15.33 billion | 2.6% | USD 22.36 billion |
| Wire rod | 8.0% | USD 11.15 billion | 4.6% | USD 19.35 billion |
| High-purity and other forms | 5.0% | USD 6.97 billion | 2.8% | USD 10.34 billion |

Billet leads because extruders turn it into window and curtain-wall frames, solar module frames, rail and truck sections and battery trays, and its 33.0% share sits two points above the 31% worldwide figure in our parent model. That gap reflects how much of the region's metal goes into building and solar profiles rather than sheet. Billet value grows 3.3% a year to USD 71.31 billion by 2035, faster than the 2.88% total, as smelters cast more value-added logs at the potline instead of selling standard ingot to remelters.

Standard ingot, USD 34.83 billion in 2025, grows only 2.0% a year to USD 48.21 billion because it is the form most exposed to trade swings and to remelters switching to scrap. Rolling slab, USD 25.08 billion, grows 3.0% to USD 37.89 billion as can-sheet, automotive-sheet and battery-foil mills add lines. Foundry alloy ingot, USD 15.33 billion, grows 2.6% with engine, motor-housing and wheel castings, though large one-piece die castings use more recycled alloy each year. Wire rod, USD 11.15 billion, grows fastest at 4.6% on transmission and distribution conductors, and high-purity metal for capacitors and electronics, USD 6.97 billion, grows 2.8%. Form values for 2035 sum to USD 209.46 billion, 0.55% above the headline.

## How does Asia Pacific aluminum metal demand split by end use, supply origin and contract type?

Construction and solar take about 30.0% of 2025 Asia Pacific aluminum metal value, roughly USD 41.80 billion, Douglas Insights estimates; transport takes 24.0%, electrical 16.0%, packaging 10.0%, machinery and equipment 10.0% and consumer durables and other uses 10.0%.

By origin, the region is almost self-sufficient in primary metal but not evenly. Chinese smelters supplied 45.02 million tonnes in 2025, the [NBS 2025 communiqué](https://www.stats.gov.cn/english/PressRelease/202602/t20260228_1962661.html) shows, out of world output of about 73.78 million tonnes reported by the [International Aluminium Institute (IAI)](https://international-aluminium.org/statistics/primary-aluminium-production/), so China alone smelted about 61% of the world's metal. Japan, South Korea and Taiwan smelt almost nothing and import nearly all their primary aluminum, and Gulf smelters supplied 28% of Japanese imports, Reuters reported on [20 May 2026](https://www.mining.com/web/gulf-aluminum-april-output-tumbles-to-lowest-in-a-over-a-decade-due-to-iran-war/).

By contract, about 65% of tonnes move on annual or quarterly supply agreements and 35% on spot purchases, a Douglas Insights estimate. Chinese fabricators mostly buy at the Shanghai spot price plus a small delivered premium, while Japanese and Korean buyers sign quarterly premium contracts on top of the London Metal Exchange (LME) price, so realised prices in the northeast of the region lag spot moves by about one quarter.

## What drives Asia Pacific aluminum metal demand: grids and solar, vehicles, new smelting capacity or packaging?

Tonnes sold rise 2.50% a year in our base case, from about 52.90 million in 2026 to 66.06 million in 2035. Four drivers add 3.30 gross points; three restraints remove 0.80, Douglas Insights estimates.

### Grids, solar and electrification: 1.40 points

Electrical and solar demand is the largest driver, worth 1.40 points. China's primary aluminum output rose 3.1% to 3.91 million tonnes in September 2026 even as overall output of ten nonferrous metals rose only 0.1% to 6.93 million tonnes, the [NBS release of 20 October 2026](https://www.stats.gov.cn/english/PressRelease/202610/t20261020_1965665.html) shows, and solar generation rose 19.5% and wind generation 10.6% in the same month, its [energy production release](https://www.stats.gov.cn/english/PressRelease/202610/t20261020_1965661.html) states. Every gigawatt of new solar needs roughly 15,000 to 20,000 tonnes of aluminum in frames and mounts, and every kilometre of overhead line needs conductor rod, so Douglas Insights estimates that electrical and solar uses take about 15.1 million tonnes of primary metal in 2026, rising to about 20.4 million by 2035.

### New smelting and fabricating capacity: 0.80 points

New capacity outside the largest producer adds 0.80 points, because fabricators build next to smelters that sell molten metal and billet. Vedanta Aluminium produced a record 649,000 tonnes in the quarter to 30 September 2026, up 5%, and 1.28 million tonnes in the half year, and its BALCO subsidiary commissioned the second zone of a 525 kA potline, taking a 435,000-tonne expansion to 50% of planned capacity, its [production update of 7 October 2026](https://themachinemaker.com/news/vedanta-aluminium-reports-highest-ever-quarterly-aluminium-production-in-q2-fy27/) shows. Hindalco shipped 335,000 tonnes of upstream aluminum in the quarter to 30 June 2026 at an EBITDA of USD 2,331 a tonne and said its Aditya smelter phase 2 is "on track to begin metal production in FY28", its [results of 7 August 2026](https://www.hindalco.com/media/press-releases/hindalco-results-q1fy27) state.

### Vehicles and transport: 0.60 points

Transport adds 0.60 points. Electric and hybrid cars carry more aluminum than petrol models in battery enclosures, motor housings, crash structures and large one-piece castings, about 50 to 80 kilograms more per vehicle, a Douglas Insights estimate. China Hongqiao, the largest private smelter, grew revenue 8.0% to RMB 87.51 billion and net profit attributable 39.2% to RMB 17.21 billion in the half year to 30 June 2026 while selling about 2.81 million tonnes of aluminum alloy products, its [interim results of 21 August 2026](https://www1.hkexnews.hk/listedco/listconews/sehk/2026/0821/2026082101077.pdf) show; the jump in profit on lower tonnes shows how tight metal has become for car and component makers.

### Packaging and foil: 0.50 points

Packaging adds the last 0.50 points, mainly beverage-can sheet, food foil and pharmaceutical blister foil, where rising incomes in India and Southeast Asia lift can use from a low base, though a growing share of can sheet is remade from used cans. Summed, 1.40 + 0.80 + 0.60 + 0.50 = 3.30 points, a Douglas Insights estimate; after 0.80 points of restraints, the 2.50% tonne leg multiplied by the 0.37% price leg gives the 2.88% revenue rate.

## What holds back Asia Pacific aluminum metal tonnes: the capacity ceiling, power shortfalls or recycled metal?

Three restraints remove 0.80 points a year from tonne growth: the national smelting capacity ceiling takes 0.35 points, recycled metal 0.30 points and power and raw-material shortfalls 0.15 points, Douglas Insights estimates.

The capacity ceiling is the sharpest brake. Beijing caps smelting capacity at 45 million tonnes a year, and output already reached 45.02 million tonnes in 2025, the [NBS 2025 communiqué](https://www.stats.gov.cn/english/PressRelease/202602/t20260228_1962661.html) shows. At the nine-month pace of 35.03 million tonnes reported on [20 October 2026](https://www.stats.gov.cn/english/PressRelease/202610/t20261020_1965665.html), 2026 output reaches about 46.7 million tonnes, a Douglas Insights estimate, which leaves little room beyond higher pot efficiency. Chalco, the state-controlled leader, raised primary aluminum output only 1.33% to 6.08 million tonnes in the nine months to 30 September 2026, according to its third-quarter report of 29 October 2026 as [reported by AL Circle](https://www.alcircle.com/news/chalco-shares-jump-over-4-as-q3-profit-rises-66-to-1-88b-ubs-citi-retain-buy-ratings-121804).

Recycled metal takes 0.30 points: each tonne of old scrap remelted into billet or foundry alloy is a tonne of primary metal not bought, and the region's stock of buildings, cars and cables reaching end of life grows every year. Power and raw-material shortfalls take the last 0.15 points. Hydropower generation fell 18.1% in September 2026, the [NBS energy release](https://www.stats.gov.cn/english/PressRelease/202610/t20261020_1965661.html) shows, a risk for smelters relocated to hydro-rich provinces. Gulf smelters, which ship metal across the region, produced only 330,000 tonnes in April 2026, down 35%, because they could not bring raw materials through the Strait of Hormuz during the Iran war, Reuters reported on [20 May 2026](https://www.mining.com/web/gulf-aluminum-april-output-tumbles-to-lowest-in-a-over-a-decade-due-to-iran-war/).

## Which Asia Pacific country buys the most aluminum metal: China, India, Japan and South Korea, or Southeast Asia?

China buys the most Asia Pacific aluminum metal, about USD 123.30 billion or 88.5% of 2025 value. India grows fastest, at 6.2% a year to USD 13.31 billion by 2035, on new smelters, grids and construction.

| Country group | Value 2025 | Share 2025 | Value 2026 | CAGR 2026-2035 | Value 2035 |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| China | USD 123.30 billion | 88.5% | USD 142.79 billion | 2.6% | USD 179.90 billion |
| India | USD 6.69 billion | 4.8% | USD 7.74 billion | 6.2% | USD 13.31 billion |
| Japan and South Korea | USD 5.02 billion | 3.6% | USD 5.81 billion | 1.4% | USD 6.58 billion |
| Southeast Asia | USD 3.34 billion | 2.4% | USD 3.87 billion | 6.0% | USD 6.54 billion |
| Australia, New Zealand and rest | USD 975.3 million | 0.7% | USD 1.13 billion | 1.5% | USD 1.29 billion |

China leads because it both smelts and fabricates most of the region's metal; its extruders, rolling mills and die casters supply buildings, solar farms, cars and exported goods. Chinese value grows 2.6% a year to USD 179.90 billion, slower than the region, because the capacity ceiling holds smelter output close to 46 to 47 million tonnes and growth must come from higher-value forms. India, USD 6.69 billion, grows fastest at 6.2% as Vedanta, BALCO and Hindalco add potlines and as domestic grid and housing demand rises; Hindalco's upstream EBITDA rose 55% to INR 7,009 crore in the quarter to 30 September 2026, its [results reported on 6 November 2026](https://www.equitybulls.com/news/378666/hindalco-reports-q2-fy27-results-record-results-driven-by-india-business-perform) show.

Japan and South Korea, USD 5.02 billion, grow 1.4% a year, the slowest pace, because both import nearly all their primary metal and their vehicle and electronics output is mature; Japan's quarterly premium contracts make them the region's price-setters for imported ingot. Southeast Asia, USD 3.34 billion, grows 6.0% to USD 6.54 billion as Indonesia, Malaysia and Vietnam add smelting, extrusion and vehicle assembly, with about 0.5 million tonnes of new Indonesian capacity by 2027, a Douglas Insights estimate. Australia, New Zealand and the rest, USD 975.3 million, grow 1.5%; Tomago, which makes up to 590,000 tonnes a year, almost 40% of Australia's output, secured power through 2038 in an agreement with the Australian and New South Wales governments announced on 13 August 2026, Rio Tinto's [filing](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/0000863064/000162828026059733/ex3d13tacannoucement.htm) states. Values sum to USD 207.62 billion in 2035, 0.33% below the headline.

## Which companies lead the Asia Pacific aluminum metal market, and how concentrated is supply?

Chalco leads Asia Pacific aluminum metal supply with about 15.5% of 2025 value, a Douglas Insights estimate, ahead of China Hongqiao at 11.2% and Vedanta at 3.5%. The top five hold about 34.2%.

| Company | Base and position | Latest filed figure | Estimated share 2025 |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Aluminum Corporation of China (Chalco) | Beijing; state-controlled smelters across several provinces | Primary aluminum 6.08 million tonnes, nine months to 30 September 2026 | 15.5% |
| China Hongqiao Group | Shandong; smelters in Shandong and Yunnan | Revenue RMB 87.51 billion, half year to 30 June 2026 | 11.2% |
| Vedanta Aluminium | Jharsuguda and Korba (BALCO), India | Aluminum 649,000 tonnes, quarter to 30 September 2026 | 3.5% |
| Hindalco Industries | Mumbai; Renukoot, Hirakud, Mahan and Aditya smelters | Upstream shipments 335,000 tonnes, quarter to 30 June 2026 | 2.5% |
| Rio Tinto | London and Melbourne; Tomago, Boyne, Bell Bay and Tiwai Point smelters | Aluminum 2.52 million tonnes, nine months to 30 September 2026 | 1.5% |

Chalco's net profit attributable rose 64.83% to RMB 17.92 billion in the nine months to 30 September 2026, and third-quarter revenue rose 1.74% to RMB 61.18 billion, its third-quarter report of 29 October 2026 shows, as [reported by AL Circle](https://www.alcircle.com/news/chalco-shares-jump-over-4-as-q3-profit-rises-66-to-1-88b-ubs-citi-retain-buy-ratings-121804). China Hongqiao's gross margin widened to about 31.5% in the first half of 2026 on RMB 27.53 billion of gross profit, its [interim announcement](https://www1.hkexnews.hk/listedco/listconews/sehk/2026/0821/2026082101077.pdf) shows, and it is relocating capacity to Yunnan for hydropower.

Rio Tinto produced 842,000 tonnes of aluminum in the third quarter of 2026 and kept its 3.25 million to 3.45 million tonne full-year guidance, its [production results of 14 October 2026](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/0000863064/000086306426000041/ex1prodresults.htm) show; most of that metal is Canadian, so only its Pacific smelters count here. No supplier reports regional metal sales by product form, so every share in the table is a Douglas Insights estimate; Shandong Xinfa, State Power Investment, Shenhuo, Japanese and Korean traders and Gulf and Russian importers share most of the remaining 65.8%.

## How is Asia Pacific aluminum metal priced, and how far did premiums move in 2026?

Asia Pacific aluminum metal sells for an average USD 2,700 a tonne in 2025, Douglas Insights estimates, 2.2% below the USD 2,760 worldwide average in our parent model, and about USD 3,050 in 2026 as the exchange price climbs.

The region is priced off two benchmarks. Chinese fabricators pay the Shanghai price, which tracks the LME but carries almost no import premium because domestic smelters supply the market. Japanese and Korean buyers pay the LME plus a quarterly premium: the July to September 2026 premium settled at USD 395 a tonne, up 12% to 13%, and producers offered USD 310 to USD 325 for October to December shipments, down 18% to 22%, Reuters reported on [2 September 2026](https://www.mining.com/web/aluminium-producers-offer-japanese-buyers-lower-q4-premiums-sources-say). The LME price itself averaged USD 3,226 a tonne in the third quarter of 2026, Rio Tinto's [production results](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/0000863064/000086306426000041/ex1prodresults.htm) state.

The price leg from 2026 to 2035 is only 0.37% a year because two forces offset each other. Power, carbon and alumina costs lift smelting costs across the region, and value-added forms take a larger share of tonnes. Against that, the 2026 average already includes a war premium as Gulf supply recovers slowly, and Douglas Insights expects it to fade from 2027. The 2035 average is about USD 3,150 a tonne, a Douglas Insights estimate.

## Which rules govern Asia Pacific aluminum metal, from capacity caps to carbon border charges?

Three layers govern Asia Pacific aluminum metal: the national smelting capacity ceiling, export rules such as the EU carbon border charge applied from [1 January 2026](https://eur-lex.europa.eu/eli/reg/2023/956/oj/eng) and the 50% U.S. tariff, and smelter power support.

The capacity layer moves most. The 45 million tonne ceiling stops new greenfield smelting in the largest producer and pushes owners to relocate potlines to provinces with hydropower or to build abroad, which is why China Hongqiao lists "relocation of production capacity in Yunnan" among the uses of its share subscription proceeds, its [interim announcement of 21 August 2026](https://www1.hkexnews.hk/listedco/listconews/sehk/2026/0821/2026082101077.pdf) shows. Output of 45.02 million tonnes in 2025, reported in the [NBS communiqué](https://www.stats.gov.cn/english/PressRelease/202602/t20260228_1962661.html), shows the ceiling is binding.

The export layer changes where regional metal goes. Regulation (EU) 2023/956 names unwrought aluminum and aluminum products in its Annex I, so metal shipped to Europe from India and other countries carries a charge for its embedded carbon from 2026, [EUR-Lex](https://eur-lex.europa.eu/eli/reg/2023/956/oj/eng) shows, which favours hydropower and renewable-powered metal over coal-fired metal. The United States doubled its Section 232 tariff on aluminum to 50% effective 4 June 2025, the White House [fact sheet of 3 June 2025](https://www.whitehouse.gov/fact-sheets/2025/06/fact-sheet-president-donald-j-trump-increases-section-232-tariffs-on-steel-and-aluminum/) states, which keeps more Indian and Gulf metal in the region. The support layer is the newest: Tomago's ten-year power purchase agreement from 2029 to 2038 is 100% renewable from 2033, and the smelter plans AUD 1.1 billion of investment to 2038, Rio Tinto's [filing of 13 August 2026](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/0000863064/000162828026059733/ex3d13tacannoucement.htm) states.

## What if the war premium persists or demand slows: how large is the Asia Pacific aluminum metal market in 2035?

The Asia Pacific aluminum metal market ends 2035 between USD 161.14 billion and USD 251.43 billion across three cases, around a USD 208.31 billion base. Tonne growth and the exchange price set most of the spread.

| Case | Tonne leg | Price leg | Revenue rate | 2035 value |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Slower | 1.20% | -1.20% | -0.01% | USD 161.14 billion |
| Base case | 2.50% | 0.37% | 2.88% | USD 208.31 billion |
| Faster | 3.50% | 1.50% | 5.05% | USD 251.43 billion |

In the slower case property construction stays weak, solar installations plateau and the exchange price falls back toward its 2025 level as Gulf smelters recover, taking 1.30 points off tonnes and 1.57 points off price. In the faster case grid spending accelerates, India doubles smelting capacity and carbon costs lift prices across the region, adding 1.00 point to tonnes and 1.13 points to price. One extra point of yearly revenue growth adds about USD 18.95 billion to 2035 value, and one point less removes about USD 17.53 billion, Douglas Insights estimates.

Company signals bracket the base case. Chalco's tonnes rose only 1.33% in nine months while its profit rose 64.83%, which says price, not volume, carried 2026, and the falling Japanese premium offers reported on [2 September 2026](https://www.mining.com/web/aluminium-producers-offer-japanese-buyers-lower-q4-premiums-sources-say) suggest the scarcity premium is already easing. Our 0.37% price leg assumes most of the 2026 rise is temporary.

| 20 October 2026 | NBS: 35.03 million tonnes in nine months | Ceiling use |
| 29 October 2026 | Chalco third quarter 2026 report | Ceiling use |

The finding, a Douglas Insights estimate: regional demand rises from about 52.90 million tonnes in 2026 to 56.97 million in 2029, about 4.07 million tonnes more. Identified new capacity outside China, the remaining half of BALCO's 435,000-tonne expansion and about 0.5 million tonnes of Indonesian metal, adds only about 0.72 million tonnes, or 17.7% of that growth, before Hindalco's Aditya phase 2, whose size it has not stated.

With China's smelters near the ceiling at about 46.7 million tonnes, the other 3.35 million tonnes must come from recycled metal, Gulf and Russian imports, or higher pot efficiency. That is why Douglas Insights expects the region to stay a net importer of primary metal outside China through 2029, why Japanese premiums swing with Gulf supply, and why billet and wire rod made from local hydropower metal earn the widest margins.

## How does the methodology turn 51.60 million tonnes into USD 139.32 billion?

Our methodology multiplies about 51.60 million tonnes sold to Asia Pacific fabricators by an average USD 2,700 a tonne to reach USD 139.32 billion in 2025, then grows tonnes 2.50% and price 0.37% a year from 2026.

The model covers 6 product forms, 6 end uses, 2 contract types and 5 country groups, using 72 data points, 24 sourced and 48 modelled. Tonnes come from NBS smelter output of 45.02 million tonnes, IAI regional output, company production for India and Oceania, and import estimates for Japan, South Korea and Southeast Asia, less exports, all Douglas Insights estimates. Prices blend the Shanghai price, the LME price and quarterly Japanese premiums, weighted by tonnes. Arithmetic: 51.60 million x USD 2,700 = USD 139.32 billion; 2026: 52.90 million x USD 3,050 = USD 161.35 billion; 2035: USD 161.35 billion x (1.0250 x 1.0037)^9 = USD 208.31 billion.

Two cross-checks agree. First, USD 139.32 billion equals the Asia Pacific row of our worldwide model, and USD 208.31 billion in 2035 sits 0.04% above that row's USD 208.22 billion; our 2026 figure is higher than the row's USD 145.03 billion because it includes the 2026 exchange-price rise, which is why our 2026-2035 rate of 2.88% is lower than the row's 4.10% while the 2025-2035 rate, 4.10%, is the same. Second, Hindalco's EBITDA of USD 2,331 a tonne on upstream metal in mid-2026 is consistent with a regional price above USD 3,000. AI tools help draft the text and automated checks test the arithmetic and links; the Douglas Insights research desk chooses the sources, builds the model and approves publication, as our [editorial standards](https://www.douglasinsights.com/research-methodology/) explain.

## What counts in the Asia Pacific aluminum metal study, and what is excluded?

The study counts primary and alloyed unwrought aluminum sold to Asia Pacific fabricators, valued at the delivered price including premiums. Scrap, secondary ingot made from scrap, alumina, and semi-finished sheet, plate, foil and extrusions are excluded.

The study splits value by 6 product forms, 6 end uses (construction and solar, transport, electrical, packaging, machinery and equipment, and consumer durables and other), 2 contract types and 5 country groups: China, India, Japan and South Korea, Southeast Asia, and Australia, New Zealand and the rest of the region.
