Japan's Consumer Affairs Agency (CAA) gave makers of capsule and tablet Foods with Function Claims until the end of August 2026 to run about 350 factories under good manufacturing practice (GMP), with compulsory compliance from September 2026, Commissioner Arai told a [press conference on 15 May 2025](https://www.caa.go.jp/notice/statement/arai/042390.html); India went the other way and cut goods and services tax on nutraceuticals from 18% to 5% on 22 September 2025, [NutraIngredients reported](https://www.nutraingredients.com/Article/2025/09/10/india-cuts-gst-for-nutraceuticals-to-5/). Asia Pacific's wellness shelf is being tightened in its richest market and opened in its largest. The Asia Pacific health and wellness products market covers functional and fortified foods and drinks, vitamins and minerals, herbal and traditional supplements, sports and protein nutrition, natural personal care and weight-management products bought to stay well, valued at retail sales. Douglas Insights sizes it at USD 195 billion in 2025, from 1.05 billion regular buyers spending an average USD 185.8 each, and at USD 375 billion in 2035, a revenue CAGR (compound annual growth rate) of 6.75%. It is the Asia Pacific cut of our global [Health and Wellness Products Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/health-and-wellness-products-market/) report, sits in our [consumer goods and retail coverage](https://www.douglasinsights.com/industry/consumer-goods-retail/), and every figure follows the Douglas Insights [research methodology](https://www.douglasinsights.com/research-methodology/).

## Which Asia Pacific wellness shelf earns most: functional drinks, vitamins, herbal tonics or protein?

Functional and fortified foods and drinks earn most, 36.0% of 2025 Asia Pacific wellness value, USD 70.2 billion, because Japan and China buy health benefits in everyday drinks. Sports and protein nutrition grows fastest, 10.00% a year.

| Asia Pacific wellness segment | Share 2025 | Value 2025 | CAGR 2026-2035 | Value 2035 |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Functional and fortified foods and beverages | 36.0% | USD 70.2 billion | 6.40% | USD 131 billion |
| Vitamins and minerals supplements | 25.0% | USD 48.8 billion | 6.50% | USD 91.5 billion |
| Herbal and traditional supplements | 14.0% | USD 27.3 billion | 5.60% | USD 47.1 billion |
| Sports and protein nutrition | 9.0% | USD 17.6 billion | 10.00% | USD 45.5 billion |
| Natural wellness personal care | 8.0% | USD 15.6 billion | 7.00% | USD 30.7 billion |
| Weight management and meal replacement | 8.0% | USD 15.6 billion | 8.20% | USD 34.3 billion |

Functional foods and drinks, USD 70.2 billion, lead because the region invented the category: Japan's probiotic dairy drinks, Foods for Specified Health Uses (FOSHU) and Foods with Function Claims put health claims on supermarket shelves, and Chinese and Korean buyers follow with fortified milk and fermented drinks. They grow 6.40% a year, close to the market. Vitamins and minerals, USD 48.8 billion, grow 6.50% a year; in South Korea vitamins and minerals have overtaken red ginseng as the largest health functional food by production value, the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) said in data reported on [30 May 2025](https://medipharmhealth.co.kr/news/article.html?no=107825).

Herbal and traditional supplements, USD 27.3 billion, cover traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) tonics, Korean red ginseng and Ayurvedic products, and grow slowest, 5.60% a year, as younger buyers switch to vitamins and protein. Sports and protein nutrition, USD 17.6 billion, grows fastest, 10.00% a year: By-health said its Blue Can protein powder, launched for e-commerce in the second quarter of 2025, had sold more than RMB 230 million by March 2026, [Weekly on Stock reported](https://static.weeklyonstock.com/26/0320/wd205445.html). Natural personal care, USD 15.6 billion, grows 7.00%, and weight management, USD 15.6 billion, grows 8.20% as meal replacement follows obesity concern into China and India. Segment values for 2035 sum to USD 380 billion, 1.31% above the headline.

## Why are 450 million more Asians expected to buy wellness products by 2035?

Rising incomes in India and Southeast Asia and ageing in China, Japan and Korea lift Asia Pacific wellness buyers 3.60% a year, from 1.05 billion in 2025 to 1.50 billion in 2035. Four drivers add 4.10 points.

### New middle-class buyers in India and Southeast Asia: 1.80 points

First-time buyers add 1.80 points. Households in India, Indonesia, Vietnam and the Philippines move from loose herbs to branded multivitamins and protein as incomes rise, and Douglas Insights estimates that India alone adds about 250 million regular buyers by 2035.

### Ageing in North Asia: 1.10 points

Ageing adds 1.10 points. Older buyers in Japan, China and South Korea take supplements for joints, eyes, memory and blood flow; in Korea, products for blood flow and memory improvement led health functional food sales for a fourth straight year in 2024, at KRW 1.17 trillion and KRW 1.14 trillion, according to MFDS data reported on 30 May 2025.

### Live-stream and cross-border e-commerce: 0.90 points

Online selling adds 0.90 points. H&H International said Swisse's Douyin sales in mainland China rose 71.4% in 2025 and cross-border e-commerce 18.9%, with online channels carrying 82.0% of its mainland adult nutrition revenue, in its [2025 annual results](https://www1.hkexnews.hk/listedco/listconews/sehk/2026/0324/2026032400354.pdf).

### Tax relief in India: 0.30 points

India's GST cut adds 0.30 points. The rate on multivitamins, protein powders and herbal extracts fell from 18% to 5% from 22 September 2025, the first cut in eight years, and the commerce minister asked companies to pass every rupee of it on to consumers. The four drivers total 1.80 + 1.10 + 0.90 + 0.30 = 4.10 points.

## What holds back Asia Pacific wellness spending after the beni-koji scare and the daigou retreat?

Three restraints remove 0.50 points from Asia Pacific wellness buyer growth, leaving 3.60% a year. Lower trust and compliance costs in Japan take 0.20 points, cautious Chinese spending 0.20 points, and the daigou retreat 0.10 points.

Japan's tighter Foods with Function Claims regime followed the 2024 beni-koji (red yeast rice) supplement recall by Kobayashi Pharmaceutical. The GMP duty for about 350 tablet and capsule plants from September 2026, set out at the [CAA briefing](https://www.caa.go.jp/notice/statement/arai/042390.html), raises costs for small makers, and some brands withdraw products rather than upgrade. Douglas Insights removes 0.20 points.

China's buyers are more cautious. By-health's 2025 report describes a shrinking pharmacy channel, fiercer e-commerce competition and buyers who choose more rationally by function and life stage; its revenue was RMB 6.265 billion in 2025 even as net profit rose 19.81% to RMB 782 million, [Weekly on Stock reported](https://static.weeklyonstock.com/26/0320/wd205445.html). Douglas Insights removes 0.20 points.

The daigou retreat removes 0.10 points. H&H said its Australia and New Zealand revenue fell 21.8% to RMB 1,574.1 million in 2025 after it deprioritised the corporate daigou channel, the personal shoppers who carry Australian vitamins to China, even though the domestic Australian business grew 5.5% like for like, according to its [annual results](https://www1.hkexnews.hk/listedco/listconews/sehk/2026/0324/2026032400354.pdf).

## Which Asia Pacific country buys the most wellness products, and why does India grow fastest?

China buys the most, USD 85.8 billion or 44.0% of 2025 Asia Pacific wellness value. India grows fastest, 11.00% a year to USD 55.4 billion by 2035, as GST cuts and rising incomes widen its buyer base.

| Country or sub-region | Value 2025 | Share 2025 | Value 2026 | CAGR 2026-2035 | Value 2035 |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| China | USD 85.8 billion | 44.0% | USD 91.8 billion | 7.00% | USD 169 billion |
| Japan | USD 35.1 billion | 18.0% | USD 36.1 billion | 2.80% | USD 46.3 billion |
| Southeast Asia | USD 21.5 billion | 11.0% | USD 23.3 billion | 8.80% | USD 49.9 billion |
| India | USD 19.5 billion | 10.0% | USD 21.7 billion | 11.00% | USD 55.4 billion |
| South Korea | USD 13.7 billion | 7.0% | USD 14.4 billion | 5.20% | USD 22.7 billion |
| Australia and New Zealand | USD 10.7 billion | 5.5% | USD 11.2 billion | 4.80% | USD 17.1 billion |
| Rest of Asia Pacific | USD 8.78 billion | 4.5% | USD 9.35 billion | 6.50% | USD 16.5 billion |

China, USD 85.8 billion, leads on scale: about 470 million regular buyers, by Douglas Insights estimate, spend about USD 183 each across blue-hat registered health foods, fortified dairy, TCM tonics and imported vitamins. It grows 7.00% a year and supplies 45.7% of the value the region adds by 2035. Japan, USD 35.1 billion, has the most mature shelf and grows only 2.80% a year as its population shrinks and the GMP rule thins product ranges.

India, USD 19.5 billion, grows fastest, 11.00% a year, as about 230 million buyers spending only about USD 85 each move from Ayurvedic staples to protein and multivitamins at 5% GST. Southeast Asia, USD 21.5 billion, grows 8.80% on the same pattern in Indonesia, Vietnam and the Philippines. South Korea, USD 13.7 billion, and Australia and New Zealand, USD 10.7 billion, grow 5.20% and 4.80% a year from high spend per buyer. Country values for 2035 sum to USD 377 billion, 0.48% above the headline; in the data table the row labelled Global holds the Asia Pacific total, USD 195 billion in 2025.

## Who sells wellness products across Asia Pacific: Herbalife, Swisse, By-health or the drinks makers?

No seller holds 2% of Asia Pacific wellness value. Among companies that file regional figures, Herbalife leads with USD 2.01 billion, 1.03% of 2025 value, ahead of H&H's adult nutrition arm at 0.50% and By-health at 0.45%.

| Company | What the position rests on | 2025 regional sales | Share of 2025 value |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Herbalife | Meal replacement and protein shakes sold through distributors in India, Vietnam, Korea, Japan and China | USD 2.01 billion | 1.03% |
| H&H International (Swisse) | Swisse vitamins, No. 1 in mainland China and Australia; adult nutrition and care revenue RMB 6,946.4 million | USD 966 million | 0.50% |
| By-health | China's largest domestic vitamin brand; revenue RMB 6.265 billion | USD 872 million | 0.45% |
| Other sellers | Amway, Yakult, Otsuka, Suntory Wellness, Meiji, Kirin's Blackmores and Fancl, Infinitus, Dabur, Himalaya Wellness and thousands of local brands | USD 191 billion | 98.0% |

Herbalife reported 2025 Asia Pacific net sales of USD 1,729.8 million, up 0.3%, and China net sales of USD 279.1 million, down 6.2%, in its [18 February 2026 results](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1180262/000121390026017966/ea027739601ex99-1_herbalife.htm); together they make USD 2.01 billion. H&H's total revenue rose 10.0% to RMB 14,353.6 million, with adult nutrition and care in mainland China up 13.3% to RMB 4,911.7 million, and Swisse passed USD 1 billion of net sales in 2025. Yuan figures are converted at RMB 7.1875 per dollar, the 2025 average in the [Federal Reserve G.5A release](https://www.federalreserve.gov/Releases/g5a/Current).

The field is fragmented because each country has its own regulator, its own trusted herbs and its own sales channel: direct selling in China and Southeast Asia, convenience stores and drugstores in Japan, home shopping in Korea and pharmacies in Australia. Drinks makers such as Yakult and Otsuka earn most of their wellness revenue in functional beverages rather than supplements. The wearable devices many of these buyers now use to track sleep and steps are sized in our [Asia Pacific Smart Wearable Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/asia-pacific-smart-wearable-market/) report.

## How much does an Asia Pacific wellness buyer spend in a year, from India's USD 85 to Australia's USD 596?

An Asia Pacific wellness buyer spent USD 185.8 on average in 2025, Douglas Insights estimates, from about USD 85 in India to about USD 596 in Australia and New Zealand. Spend per buyer rises 3.04% a year to USD 251.

| Country or sub-region | Regular buyers 2025 | Spend per buyer 2025 | Value 2025 |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Australia and New Zealand | 18 million | USD 596 | USD 10.7 billion |
| Japan | 85 million | USD 413 | USD 35.1 billion |
| South Korea | 35 million | USD 390 | USD 13.7 billion |
| China | 470 million | USD 183 | USD 85.8 billion |
| Rest of Asia Pacific | 52 million | USD 169 | USD 8.78 billion |
| Southeast Asia | 160 million | USD 134 | USD 21.5 billion |
| India | 230 million | USD 85 | USD 19.5 billion |

Mix, not list price, drives the spend leg. Buyers add a second and third product line, move from tablets to gummies, protein tubs and ready-to-drink formats, and trade up to imported brands; that adds 3.04% a year. Douglas Insights projects USD 191.4 per buyer in 2026 and USD 250.6 in 2035. India's GST cut lowered shelf prices by about 11% on the affected lines, which widens the buyer base but holds down spend per buyer there.

The regional average sits below the USD 318.6 global average in our model because two in three Asia Pacific buyers live in China, India and Southeast Asia, where spend per head is low. Plant-derived products that sit across several of these lines are sized in our [Plant Based Supplement Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/plant-based-supplement-market/) report.

## Which rules change Asia Pacific wellness labels: Japan's GMP duty, China's blue hat or India's 5% GST?

Three rules change Asia Pacific wellness products: Japan's GMP duty for Foods with Function Claims from September 2026, China's registration and filing system for blue-hat health foods, and India's 5% GST from 22 September 2025.

In Japan the CAA revised the Food Labeling Standards in August 2024 so that tablet and capsule Foods with Function Claims must be made under GMP; a CAA GMP team of nine, formed on 1 April 2025, visits plants during the transition, and from September 2026 non-compliant notifiers face measures under the Food Labeling Act, the [CAA said](https://www.caa.go.jp/notice/statement/arai/042390.html). The agency says legal responsibility for manufacturing and labelling rests with the notifier, not the contract factory, which pushes brand owners to audit suppliers. Japan's new claims are tracked in our [Functional Food Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/functional-food-market/) report.

In China the State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) keeps a dual system: health foods with new functions or ingredients need registration, while vitamin and mineral products on the approved raw-material list can be filed, which is why most new Chinese launches are vitamins. India's GST change also taxed Ayurveda, Unani and homoeopathy products at 5%, while imported nutraceuticals can still face customs duties of 50% to 100%, according to the same [NutraIngredients report](https://www.nutraingredients.com/Article/2025/09/10/india-cuts-gst-for-nutraceuticals-to-5/), which favours local makers. Australia's Therapeutic Goods Administration lists complementary medicines, which is the basis of the Swisse and Blackmores export trade.

## What if China's buyers stay cautious or India's take off: where does Asia Pacific wellness land in 2035?

The Asia Pacific health and wellness products market ends 2035 between USD 290 billion and USD 479 billion across our three cases, around a base of USD 375 billion. China's mood and India's buyer growth set the spread.

| Case | Buyer leg | Spend per buyer leg | 2035 value |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Slower | 2.20% | 1.80% | USD 290 billion |
| Base case | 3.60% | 3.04% | USD 375 billion |
| Faster | 5.00% | 4.20% | USD 479 billion |

In the slower case Chinese buyers keep trading down, Japan's GMP rule removes more small brands and Southeast Asian incomes grow slowly. In the faster case India's 5% GST and quick-commerce delivery pull buyers in faster and Chinese live-stream selling keeps growing at Douyin-like rates. One extra point of yearly buyer growth adds USD 37.8 billion to 2035 value; one point less removes USD 34.6 billion.

Our 6.75% base is the fastest of the five regions in our global model, against 4.55% for North America, so Asia Pacific's USD 375 billion overtakes North America's USD 328 billion before 2035.

## Douglas Exclusive: the Asia Pacific Wellness Spend Gap Index

The Asia Pacific Wellness Spend Gap Index is a Douglas Insights model built from 9 sourced inputs, 4 company filings, 3 government releases and 2 trade reports, setting each market's buyers and spend per buyer against Japan's level.

| Market | Spend per buyer as % of Japan | Share of 2025 value | Share of value added 2025-2035 |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| China | 44% | 44.0% | 45.7% |
| India | 21% | 10.0% | 19.8% |
| Southeast Asia | 32% | 11.0% | 15.6% |
| Japan | 100% | 18.0% | 6.2% |
| South Korea, Australia and New Zealand, rest | 41% to 144% | 17.0% | 12.7% |

The finding, a Douglas Insights estimate: India and Southeast Asia hold 21.0% of 2025 Asia Pacific wellness value but supply 35.4% of the value added to 2035, because their buyers spend only 21% and 32% of what a Japanese buyer spends and both numbers rise. Japan, 18.0% of today's value, supplies only 6.2% of growth. A brand planning for 2035 sells in Japan and grows in India.

## How does the methodology turn 1.05 billion buyers into USD 195 billion of Asia Pacific wellness sales?

Our methodology multiplies 1.05 billion regular Asia Pacific wellness buyers in 2025 by an average annual spend of USD 185.8 to reach USD 195 billion. Buyers come from seven country builds; spend from filings and price checks.

The model covers 7 countries and sub-regions, 6 product segments and 4 channels, and uses 66 data points, 14 sourced and 52 modelled. Arithmetic: 1.05 billion x USD 185.78 = USD 195,068.8 million; 195,068.8 x (1.0360 x 1.0304)^10 = USD 374,838.2 million, or USD 375 billion. Buyers reach 1.09 billion in 2026 and 1.50 billion in 2035. By channel, Douglas Insights estimates that online and live-stream commerce sells about 38% of value, supermarkets and convenience stores about 27%, pharmacies and drugstores about 20% and direct selling about 15%.

Two cross-checks agree. First, USD 195 billion matches the Asia Pacific row of our global model, 31.2% of the USD 625 billion world total. Second, South Korea's health functional food production of KRW 2.76 trillion in 2024, about USD 1.94 billion, is 14.2% of our USD 13.7 billion Korean total, which fits once functional drinks, protein, natural personal care and imports are added. AI tools help draft the text and automated checks test the arithmetic and links; the Douglas Insights research desk chooses the sources, builds the model and approves publication, as our [editorial standards](https://www.douglasinsights.com/research-methodology/) explain.

## Which products does this Asia Pacific wellness study count, and what stays out?
