India suspended its Linear Alkyl Benzene (Quality Control) Order, 2022 from 1 July to 30 September 2026, by order S.O. 3456(E) of 25 June 2026, so that detergent makers could keep buying the feedstock of their main surfactant without BIS certification during global supply disruptions, [The Tribune reported](https://www.tribuneindia.com/news/india/centre-suspends-lab-quality-control-order-for-3-months-amid-global-supply-disruption/); weeks later Galaxy Surfactants said its Indian volumes had returned to double-digit growth for the first time in nearly two years, its [investor presentation of 13 August 2026](https://nsearchives.nseindia.com/corporate/GALAXYSURF_13082026232618_Q127investorpptds.pdf) shows. Asia Pacific's home care chemistry is now steered by Indian laundry demand and by raw material supply. The Asia Pacific home care chemicals market covers the surfactants, builders and chelating agents, enzymes, polymers and rheology modifiers, solvents, bleaching agents and biocides, and fragrance ingredients sold to makers of laundry detergents, dishwashing products, surface and toilet cleaners and air fresheners in China, India, Japan, Indonesia, the rest of Southeast Asia, Pakistan and Bangladesh, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand and the rest of the region. Douglas Insights sizes it at USD 7.89 billion in 2025, from 5.25 million tonnes at an average USD 1,504 a tonne, and at USD 12.4 billion in 2035, a revenue CAGR (compound annual growth rate) of 4.62%. The study is the Asia Pacific cut of our global [Home Care Chemicals Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/home-care-chemicals-market/) report, sits in our [specialty chemicals coverage](https://www.douglasinsights.com/industry/specialty-chemicals/), and every figure follows the Douglas Insights [research methodology](https://www.douglasinsights.com/research-methodology/).

## Which Asia Pacific home care chemicals earn the most: surfactants, builders or enzymes?

Surfactants earn the most Asia Pacific home care chemicals value, 47.0% of 2025, USD 3.71 billion, because every bar, powder and liquid detergent washes with them. Enzymes grow fastest, 8.40% a year to USD 1.33 billion.

| Ingredient | Share 2025 | Value 2025 | CAGR 2026-2035 | Value 2035 |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Surfactants | 47.0% | USD 3.71 billion | 4.30% | USD 5.65 billion |
| Builders and chelating agents | 15.5% | USD 1.22 billion | 3.40% | USD 1.71 billion |
| Bleaching agents and biocides | 8.5% | USD 671 million | 4.00% | USD 993 million |
| Enzymes | 7.5% | USD 592 million | 8.40% | USD 1.33 billion |
| Polymers and rheology modifiers | 7.5% | USD 592 million | 5.10% | USD 974 million |
| Solvents | 7.0% | USD 553 million | 3.30% | USD 765 million |
| Fragrance ingredients | 7.0% | USD 553 million | 5.60% | USD 953 million |

Surfactants lead at USD 3.71 billion because Asia Pacific still washes mostly with powders and bars built on linear alkylbenzene sulphonate (LAS), made from linear alkyl benzene, plus sodium lauryl ether sulphate (SLES) and fatty alcohol ethoxylates in liquids and dish soaps. They take a higher share here than in the 44.3% global mix because Indian, Indonesian and Pakistani powders carry more active matter per kilogram. They grow 4.30% a year as powders give way slowly to liquids. Builders and chelating agents, USD 1.22 billion, grow only 3.40% a year: soda ash, zeolite and sodium tripolyphosphate are cheap and are cut as formulas compact, while chelates such as methylglycinediacetic acid (MGDA) grow faster in machine dishwashing, a Douglas Insights estimate.

Enzymes, USD 592 million, grow fastest, 8.40% a year, because protease, amylase and lipase let Chinese, Japanese and Indian brands cut surfactant per load and wash cold; Novonesis, the largest enzyme maker, grew Household Care sales 7% organically in 2025 and its emerging markets 9%, its [announcement of 25 February 2026](https://backend.novonesis.com/sites/default/files/document/2026-02/2026_01_12M%202025__Highlights.pdf) states. Polymers and rheology modifiers, USD 592 million, grow 5.10% a year with liquids and capsules; bleaching agents and biocides, USD 671 million, grow 4.00% on toilet and surface hygiene; fragrance ingredients, USD 553 million, grow 5.60% as premium Chinese and Indian liquids add scent boosters; solvents, USD 553 million, grow 3.30%. Ingredient values for 2035 sum to USD 12.4 billion, 0.19% below the headline.

## Why does Asia Pacific home care chemicals tonnage grow 3.10% a year?

Asia Pacific home care chemicals tonnage grows 3.10% a year, from 5.25 million tonnes in 2025 to 7.12 million in 2035, because South Asian laundry, Southeast Asian households and China's switch to liquids add 3.80 points before restraints.

The region still washes more clothes by hand and in semi-automatic machines than any other, and each step up, from bar to powder, powder to liquid and liquid to capsule, changes which chemicals are bought. Five drivers make up the gross volume leg, each sized by Douglas Insights from supplier and brand disclosures.

### Indian and South Asian laundry upgrades: 1.30 points

India, Pakistan and Bangladesh add 1.30 points. Galaxy Surfactants reported low-double-digit Indian volume growth in April to June 2026, citing the return of reformulation-related volumes and strong demand from tier-1 customers, in its [13 August 2026 presentation](https://nsearchives.nseindia.com/corporate/GALAXYSURF_13082026232618_Q127investorpptds.pdf); Unilever said continued strong volume in India supported its Home Care growth late in 2025, its [results commentary of 16 February 2026](https://www.unilever.com/news/news-search/2026/whats-behind-unilevers-2025-full-year-results/) states.

### Southeast Asian households: 0.80 points

Indonesia, the Philippines, Vietnam and Thailand add 0.80 points as urban households buy more washing machines, liquid detergents and fabric conditioners; Galaxy said its rest-of-world volumes grew by a mid-single-digit rate led by Asia Pacific in the same quarter, its presentation shows.

### China's shift to liquids, capsules and enzymes: 0.70 points

China adds 0.70 points, mostly in value-dense chemistry rather than tonnes. Chinese brands such as Liby, Nice and Blue Moon have moved laundry from powder to liquid and capsule, which use more nonionic surfactant, enzyme and polymer per wash and less builder, a Douglas Insights estimate. The washers that make cold-wash enzymes work are sized in our [Smart Washing Machine Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/smart-washing-machine-market/) report.

### Surface and toilet hygiene: 0.60 points

Disinfecting surface cleaners, toilet cleaners and floor cleaners add 0.60 points, led by Indian and Southeast Asian homes buying bottled cleaners for the first time and by Chinese and Japanese demand for quaternary ammonium and hypochlorite products.

### Dishwashing: 0.40 points

Dishwashing liquids and, in China, Japan, Korea and Australia, machine dishwashing tablets add 0.40 points. The five contributions, 1.30 + 0.80 + 0.70 + 0.60 + 0.40, give 3.80 points.

The price leg adds 1.47 points a year. Douglas Insights projects the average price to rise from USD 1,504 a tonne in 2025 to USD 1,526 in 2026 and about USD 1,740 by 2035, as enzymes, polymers and fragrance take a larger share of the mix and fatty alcohol and petrochemical feedstocks pass through.

## What holds back Asia Pacific home care chemicals: compaction, mature markets or China's slow consumer?

Three restraints remove 0.70 points from Asia Pacific home care chemicals tonnage growth, leaving 3.10% a year: detergent compaction takes 0.35 points, China's weak consumer spending 0.20 points and shrinking Japanese and Korean households 0.15 points.

Compaction is the largest brake. Every move from loose powder to concentrated liquid or capsule cuts kilograms of builder and filler per wash, so tonnage grows more slowly than the number of washes, and Douglas Insights removes 0.35 points. China removes 0.20 points: household spending has stayed cautious since the property slump, so brands push promotions and smaller packs rather than more volume. Japan and South Korea remove 0.15 points as their populations shrink and their laundry is already concentrated.

Brand owners also have little room to raise prices. Unilever's Home Care underlying sales grew 2.6% in 2025, 2.2% from volume and only 0.4% from price, its [16 February 2026 commentary](https://www.unilever.com/news/news-search/2026/whats-behind-unilevers-2025-full-year-results/) shows, while Galaxy Surfactants paid an average USD 2,806 a tonne for fatty alcohol in April to June 2026, against USD 2,723 a year earlier, its [presentation](https://nsearchives.nseindia.com/corporate/GALAXYSURF_13082026232618_Q127investorpptds.pdf) states. The squeeze pushes formulators to use cheaper chemistry per wash, not more of it.

## Which Asia Pacific countries buy the most home care chemicals, and why does India add 30% of new value?

China buys the most Asia Pacific home care chemicals, USD 3.00 billion or 38.0% of 2025, Douglas Insights estimates. India grows fastest among large markets, 7.60% a year to USD 2.63 billion, and adds 30.3% of the region's new value by 2035.

| Country or sub-region | Value 2025 | Share 2025 | Value 2026 | CAGR 2026-2035 | Value 2035 |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| China | USD 3.00 billion | 38.0% | USD 3.12 billion | 3.90% | USD 4.40 billion |
| India | USD 1.26 billion | 16.0% | USD 1.36 billion | 7.60% | USD 2.63 billion |
| Japan | USD 987 million | 12.5% | USD 998 million | 1.10% | USD 1.10 billion |
| Thailand, Vietnam, Philippines and Malaysia | USD 711 million | 9.0% | USD 752 million | 5.80% | USD 1.25 billion |
| Indonesia | USD 592 million | 7.5% | USD 629 million | 6.20% | USD 1.08 billion |
| Pakistan and Bangladesh | USD 355 million | 4.5% | USD 379 million | 6.80% | USD 686 million |
| South Korea | USD 355 million | 4.5% | USD 363 million | 2.20% | USD 442 million |
| Australia and New Zealand | USD 316 million | 4.0% | USD 324 million | 2.50% | USD 404 million |
| Rest of Asia Pacific | USD 316 million | 4.0% | USD 332 million | 5.00% | USD 514 million |

China leads because it makes and uses more detergent than any other country, and its brands buy surfactants, enzymes and polymers from both domestic plants and multinational suppliers. It grows 3.90% a year, below the regional rate, and its share falls from 38.0% to 35.5% by 2035 as consumption growth slows and formulas compact. India, USD 1.26 billion, grows 7.60% a year because rural households are moving from bars to powders and urban households from powders to liquids, and because ingredient makers such as Galaxy Surfactants supply multinational and Indian detergent brands from Indian plants.

Japan, USD 987 million, grows only 1.10% a year: its laundry is already concentrated liquid and its households are shrinking. Indonesia, USD 592 million, grows 6.20% a year and the rest of Southeast Asia, USD 711 million, 5.80%, on machine ownership and liquids. Pakistan and Bangladesh, USD 355 million, grow 6.80%; South Korea and Australia and New Zealand grow 2.20% and 2.50%; the rest of Asia Pacific, including Sri Lanka, Nepal and Taiwan, grows 5.00% to USD 514 million. Country values for 2035 sum to USD 12.5 billion, 0.85% above the headline; in the data table the row labelled Global holds the Asia Pacific total. The same chemistry in the United States is sized in our [U.S. Home Care Chemicals Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/u-s-home-care-chemicals-market/) report.

## Which companies supply Asia Pacific home care chemicals, and how concentrated are the suppliers?

Galaxy Surfactants is the largest Asia Pacific home care chemicals supplier with about 5.3% of 2025 value, USD 418 million, a Douglas Insights estimate. The top three, Galaxy, Novonesis and BASF, hold about 13.3%.

| Company | What the position rests on | Estimated Asia Pacific share 2025 | Estimated value 2025 |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Galaxy Surfactants | Performance surfactants and specialty care ingredients from Indian plants for multinational and Indian brands | 5.3% | USD 418 million |
| Novonesis | Detergent enzymes: protease, amylase, lipase and cellulase | 4.2% | USD 332 million |
| BASF | Surfactants, chelates such as MGDA, polymers and enzymes for Asian detergent makers | 3.8% | USD 300 million |
| Kao | Fatty alcohols, surfactants and its own Attack and Magiclean formulations | 3.2% | USD 253 million |
| Zhejiang Zanyu Technology | Fatty alcohol ether sulphates and other surfactants for Chinese detergent brands | 3.0% | USD 237 million |
| Other suppliers | Nouryon, Clariant, Stepan, Sasol, Reliance Industries, Givaudan, Firmenich, Lion and hundreds of regional surfactant makers | 80.5% | USD 6.35 billion |

All shares are Douglas Insights estimates because suppliers do not report Asia Pacific home care sales separately. The Galaxy figure annualises its INR 1,781.9 crore of first-quarter FY27 revenue from its [investor presentation](https://nsearchives.nseindia.com/corporate/GALAXYSURF_13082026232618_Q127investorpptds.pdf) and assigns about half to India and Asia Pacific; the Novonesis figure applies an Asia Pacific share to its Household Care division, whose 2025 organic growth was 7%. Scale matters in enzymes, where a few fermentation plants supply the region, and in chelates and polymers; it matters little in LAS and SLES, where Chinese, Indian and Indonesian plants compete on cost per tonne. The industrial side of laundry chemistry is covered in our [Dry Cleaning and Laundry Service Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/dry-cleaning-and-laundry-service-market/) report.

## What price does a tonne of home care chemicals fetch in Asia Pacific?

A tonne of Asia Pacific home care chemicals fetched an average USD 1,504 in 2025, Douglas Insights estimates, from about USD 300 for soda ash builders to over USD 15,000 for fragrance compounds.

| Ingredient | Typical price, 2025 | Main buyers |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Soda ash, zeolite and phosphate builders | USD 250 to USD 500 a tonne | Powder and bar makers |
| LAS and SLES surfactants | USD 1,100 to USD 1,700 a tonne | Powder, liquid and dish soap makers |
| Polymers and chelates | USD 1,800 to USD 4,000 a tonne | Liquid, capsule and dishwasher tablet makers |
| Liquid enzyme formulations | USD 6,000 to USD 14,000 a tonne | Premium powder and liquid makers |
| Fragrance compounds | USD 15,000 to USD 40,000 a tonne | Fabric conditioner and liquid makers |

The bands are Douglas Insights estimates from supplier price notices and trade data. The Asia Pacific average of USD 1,504 sits below the USD 1,618 world average in our global model because the region uses more powder, and therefore more cheap builder, per tonne of detergent. Fatty alcohol, the feedstock for SLES and ethoxylates, cost Galaxy Surfactants USD 2,806 a tonne in April to June 2026, its presentation shows, and Galaxy's EBITDA reached INR 35,458 a tonne in that quarter; surfactant makers pass such costs to brands within a quarter or two, while LAB supply for LAS follows crude oil and kerosene.

## Which rules govern Asia Pacific home care chemicals: India's LAB order or China's VOC limits for cleaners?

Two rule sets shape Asia Pacific home care chemicals most: India's Linear Alkyl Benzene (Quality Control) Order, suspended from 1 July to 30 September 2026, and China's GB 38508-2020 limits on volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in cleaning agents.

India's order requires BIS certification for linear alkyl benzene, the feedstock for LAS. The Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers paused it for three months on 25 June 2026, citing global supply disruptions and the need to keep detergents, washing powders and liquid cleaners in production, [The Tribune reported](https://www.tribuneindia.com/news/india/centre-suspends-lab-quality-control-order-for-3-months-amid-global-supply-disruption/). When certification applies, imported LAB must come from BIS-licensed plants, which protects Reliance Industries and other Indian producers and raises the cost of imported feedstock.

GB 38508-2020 sets maximum VOC content for water-based, solvent-based and semi-aqueous cleaning agents sold in China, one of nine VOC standards China's Standardization Administration released in 2020, [SGS noted](https://www.sgs.com/en/news/2020/08/safeguards-12420-chinas-standardization-administration-releases-nine-voc-standards). It favours water-based surface cleaners over solvent-based ones and is one reason solvents grow only 3.30% a year in this report.

## What if Indian demand slows or Asia premiumises faster: where do Asia Pacific home care chemicals land in 2035?

The Asia Pacific home care chemicals market ends 2035 between USD 10.3 billion and USD 14.1 billion across our three cases, around a base of USD 12.4 billion. Indian laundry upgrades and Chinese premiumisation set the spread.

| Case | Volume leg | Price leg | 2035 value |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Slower | 1.80% | 0.90% | USD 10.3 billion |
| Base case | 3.10% | 1.47% | USD 12.4 billion |
| Faster | 4.00% | 1.90% | USD 14.1 billion |

In the slower case Chinese consumption stays flat, compaction speeds up and feedstock disruptions of the kind that led India to pause its LAB order recur. In the faster case Indian rural households move to powders and liquids sooner and Chinese and Southeast Asian brands add more enzymes, polymers and fragrance per wash. One extra point of yearly volume growth adds USD 1.26 billion to 2035 Asia Pacific home care chemicals value; one point less removes USD 1.15 billion.

Our 4.62% matches the Asia Pacific row of the Douglas Insights global model and sits above the 3.83% global rate because South and Southeast Asia still add detergent users, while Europe and North America mainly reformulate.

## Douglas Exclusive: the Asia Pacific Detergent Input Squeeze Ledger

The Asia Pacific Detergent Input Squeeze Ledger is a Douglas Insights model built from 12 figures in 4 dated company and government releases of 2026, comparing what brand owners can charge with what their chemical inputs cost.

| Date | Figure | Direction |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 16 February 2026 | Unilever Home Care 2025 growth 2.6%: volume 2.2%, price 0.4%; strong India volume | Brand pricing flat |
| 25 February 2026 | Novonesis Household Care 2025 organic growth 7%; emerging markets 9% | Enzyme demand up |
| 25 June 2026 | India suspends LAB quality control order, 1 July to 30 September 2026 | Feedstock supply tight |
| 13 August 2026 | Galaxy fatty alcohol USD 2,806 a tonne against USD 2,723 a year earlier | Input cost up 3.0% |
| 13 August 2026 | Galaxy India volume low double digits; Asia Pacific-led rest of world mid single digits | Surfactant volume up |

The finding, a Douglas Insights estimate: brand prices rose 0.4% while fatty alcohol rose 3.0% and enzyme sales grew 7%. Brands are absorbing input inflation and buying more enzyme to use less surfactant per wash, so ingredient value per wash shifts from surfactants to enzymes and polymers even as surfactant tonnes keep rising in India. We therefore set enzymes at 8.40% a year and surfactants at 4.30%, and hold the regional price leg to 1.47%, below the 2026 feedstock trend, because brands cannot pass more through to shoppers.

## How does the methodology turn 5.25 million tonnes into USD 7.89 billion of Asia Pacific home care chemicals?

Our methodology multiplies 5.25 million tonnes of Asia Pacific home care chemicals sold in 2025 by an average price of USD 1,504 a tonne to reach USD 7.89 billion. Tonnes come from nine country builds.

The model covers 9 countries or sub-regions, 7 ingredient groups and 5 applications, and uses 102 data points, 24 sourced and 78 modelled. Arithmetic: 5.25 million tonnes x USD 1,503.6 = USD 7.89 billion; USD 7.89 billion x (1.0310 x 1.0147)^10 = USD 12.4 billion. Tonnage reaches 5.41 million in 2026 and 7.12 million in 2035; the average price reaches USD 1,526 in 2026.

Two cross-checks agree. First, USD 7.89 billion equals the Asia Pacific row of our global home care chemicals model, and the 2035 value matches its USD 12.4 billion within 0.05%. Second, 5.25 million tonnes is 37.3% of the 14.1 million tonnes in that global model, consistent with Asia Pacific's 34.7% share of value at a lower average price. AI tools help draft the text and automated checks test the arithmetic and links; the Douglas Insights research desk chooses the sources, builds the model and approves publication, as our [editorial standards](https://www.douglasinsights.com/research-methodology/) explain.

## What counts in the Asia Pacific home care chemicals market, and what is excluded?

The Asia Pacific home care chemicals market counts the first-sale value of seven ingredient groups sold to household cleaning product makers in the region. Finished detergents, personal care ingredients, industrial and institutional cleaning chemicals and packaging are excluded.

The by-ingredient split covers surfactants, builders and chelating agents, enzymes, polymers and rheology modifiers, solvents, bleaching agents and biocides, and fragrance ingredients; the by-application split covers laundry, dishwashing, surface cleaners, toilet cleaners and air fresheners; the by-country split covers China, India, Japan, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines and Malaysia, Pakistan and Bangladesh, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand, and the rest of Asia Pacific. Ingredients are counted once, at the price the detergent maker pays, so captive surfactant made inside a brand owner's own plant is valued at the market price of the same grade.
