China counted about 10 million hospital beds at the end of 2025, 259,000 or 3% fewer than a year earlier, and about 38,160 hospitals, down 1%, according to the National Health Commission bulletin [reported by Yicai](https://www2.yicaiglobal.com/news/chinas-hospital-numbers-fall-for-first-time-in-five-years-as-private-facilities-face-pressure) on 31 August 2026; yet patient visits rose by 510 million to 10.65 billion, the [National Health Commission](https://en.nhc.gov.cn/2026-09/02/c_86634.htm) said. Asia Pacific's largest health system is treating more patients with fewer beds, and software, sensors and AI are how it does that. The Asia Pacific smart hospital market covers the hospital information systems and electronic medical records (EMR), connected medical devices and Internet of Things (IoT) systems, network, cloud and smart building infrastructure, AI and clinical analytics, telehealth platforms, and integration services that hospitals in China, Japan, India, Southeast Asia, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand, Taiwan and the rest of the region buy to digitise care. Douglas Insights sizes it at USD 19.4 billion in 2025, from 16.0 million hospital beds at an average smart technology spend of USD 1,215 a bed, and at USD 48.0 billion in 2035, a revenue CAGR (compound annual growth rate) of 9.47%. ## Which Asia Pacific smart hospital technologies earn the most: EMR, connected devices or AI?

Hospital information systems and EMR earn the most Asia Pacific smart hospital value, 34.0% of 2025, USD 6.61 billion, because every graded hospital must run one. AI and clinical analytics grow fastest, 15.5% a year to USD 7.39 billion.

| Technology | Share 2025 | Value 2025 | CAGR 2026-2035 | Value 2035 |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Hospital information systems and EMR | 34.0% | USD 6.61 billion | 7.60% | USD 13.7 billion |
| Connected medical devices and IoT | 24.0% | USD 4.67 billion | 10.0% | USD 12.1 billion |
| Network, cloud and smart building infrastructure | 18.0% | USD 3.50 billion | 7.60% | USD 7.28 billion |
| AI and clinical analytics | 9.0% | USD 1.75 billion | 15.5% | USD 7.39 billion |
| Telehealth and virtual care platforms | 8.0% | USD 1.56 billion | 9.80% | USD 3.96 billion |
| Integration and managed services | 7.0% | USD 1.36 billion | 9.00% | USD 3.22 billion |

Hospital information systems and EMR lead at USD 6.61 billion because China's hospital grading ties EMR maturity levels to status and funding, Japan's Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare wants electronic records in almost all medical facilities by 2030, and Indian, Korean and Australian hospitals are replacing ageing systems. They grow 7.60% a year, below the market, because large hospitals already own a system and spend mainly on upgrades and cloud migration. Connected medical devices and IoT, USD 4.67 billion, grow 10.0% a year as wards add networked monitors, smart beds, infusion pumps and real-time location systems built on the tags sized in our [Bluetooth Beacon Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/bluetooth-beacon-market/) report.

AI and clinical analytics, USD 1.75 billion, grow fastest, 15.5% a year, because image reading, clinical documentation and decision support are moving from pilots to routine use; Xunfei Healthcare's revenue rose 49.4% to RMB 446.1 million in the half year to June 2026 and its hospital assistant runs in more than 700 hospitals, its [interim results filed on 18 August 2026](https://www1.hkexnews.hk/listedco/listconews/sehk/2026/0818/2026081801219.pdf) state. Network, cloud and smart building infrastructure, USD 3.50 billion, grows 7.60% a year; [telehealth](https://www.douglasinsights.com/telehealth-market/) and virtual care platforms, USD 1.56 billion, grow 9.80% as Indian, Chinese and Australian hospitals run remote consultations; integration and managed services, USD 1.36 billion, grow 9.00%. Technology values for 2035 sum to USD 47.7 billion, 0.70% below the headline.

## Why does Asia Pacific smart hospital spending per bed grow 8.60% a year?

Asia Pacific smart hospital spending per bed grows 8.60% a year, from USD 1,215 in 2025 to about USD 2,773 in 2035, because AI mandates, EMR deadlines, Indian digital health incentives and staff shortages add 10.0 points before restraints.

Bed numbers barely move: Douglas Insights expects 0.80% a year across the region, as Indian and Southeast Asian building offsets falling Chinese and Japanese bed counts. Growth therefore comes from what each bed is wired with. Five drivers make up the gross spend leg.

### China's AI-in-healthcare directive: 3.20 points

China adds 3.20 points. Five government bodies including the National Health Commission issued a five-year directive on 4 November 2025 that makes AI image analysis and clinical decision support standard in all hospitals of Grade 2 and above by 2030 and calls for a unified national health information platform, [Caixin reported](https://www.caixinglobal.com/2025-11-06/china-unveils-ambitious-plan-to-weave-ai-into-healthcare-system-102380000.html). Hospitals must buy models, data platforms and the computing to run them.

### Japan's EMR and cloud deadline: 2.00 points

Japan adds 2.00 points. The Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare's [Healthcare DX Promotion Roadmap](https://www.mhlw.go.jp/english/policy/health-medical/healthcare-dx/dl/Healthcare-DX-Promotion-Roadmap(Overview).pdf) aims to put electronic medical records into almost all medical facilities by 2030, and on 16 October 2026 Fujitsu Japan said it would launch a standard-compliant cloud-native EHR for clinics and mid-sized hospitals in April 2027 and one for large hospitals in fiscal 2028, its [press release](https://global.fujitsu/en-global/subsidiaries/fjj/news/press-releases/2026/1016-01) states.

### India's digital health mission: 1.80 points

India adds 1.80 points. More than 100 crore (1 billion) health records were linked to more than 90 crore ABHA accounts by May 2026, 23.21 crore scan-and-share tokens had been issued and Rs 107 crore of Digital Health Incentive Scheme payments had reached hospitals by 18 June 2026, the [Press Information Bureau](https://static.pib.gov.in/WriteReadData/specificdocs/documents/2026/jul/doc202676912801.pdf) said on 6 July 2026.

### Nurse and doctor shortages: 1.80 points

Workforce pressure adds 1.80 points. Japanese, Korean, Australian and Singaporean hospitals buy remote monitoring, automated dispensing and AI documentation to cover shifts they cannot staff, a Douglas Insights estimate.

### Cybersecurity and cloud migration: 1.20 points

Security and cloud add 1.20 points. Hospitals moving records to cloud platforms must buy identity, backup and network segmentation, which raises spend per bed even when no new clinical function is added. The five contributions, 3.20 + 2.00 + 1.80 + 1.80 + 1.20, give 10.0 points.

## What holds back Asia Pacific smart hospital spending: hospital budgets, falling beds or interoperability?

Three restraints remove 1.40 points from Asia Pacific smart hospital spend growth, leaving 8.60% a year: tight public hospital budgets take 0.70 points, China's shrinking private hospital sector 0.40 points and poor interoperability 0.30 points.

Budgets are the largest brake. Public hospitals in China, Japan and India fund most digital projects from operating surpluses or one-off grants, and volume-based procurement and fee controls in China and fixed reimbursement in Japan squeeze those surpluses, so Douglas Insights removes 0.70 points. China's private sector removes 0.40 points: hospital numbers fell about 1% in 2025, with private hospitals under the most pressure, and the 259,000 beds that closed will not buy new systems, [Yicai reported](https://www2.yicaiglobal.com/news/chinas-hospital-numbers-fall-for-first-time-in-five-years-as-private-facilities-face-pressure) from the National Health Commission bulletin.

Interoperability removes 0.30 points. Japanese hospitals run vendor-specific EMRs that the standard specification is only now replacing, Indian hospitals run thousands of local systems that must be linked to ABDM one by one, and Chinese provincial platforms differ, so integration eats budget that would otherwise buy new functions.

## Which Asia Pacific countries spend most on smart hospitals, and why does India grow fastest?

China spends the most on Asia Pacific smart hospitals, USD 8.55 billion or 44.0% of 2025, Douglas Insights estimates. India grows fastest, 14.0% a year to USD 7.21 billion by 2035, and adds 18.4% of new value.

| Country or sub-region | Value 2025 | Share 2025 | Value 2026 | CAGR 2026-2035 | Value 2035 |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| China | USD 8.55 billion | 44.0% | USD 9.31 billion | 8.90% | USD 20.1 billion |
| Japan | USD 3.50 billion | 18.0% | USD 3.72 billion | 6.20% | USD 6.39 billion |
| India | USD 1.94 billion | 10.0% | USD 2.22 billion | 14.0% | USD 7.21 billion |
| Southeast Asia | USD 1.65 billion | 8.5% | USD 1.86 billion | 12.5% | USD 5.37 billion |
| South Korea | USD 1.56 billion | 8.0% | USD 1.70 billion | 9.00% | USD 3.68 billion |
| Australia and New Zealand | USD 1.36 billion | 7.0% | USD 1.46 billion | 7.60% | USD 2.83 billion |
| Taiwan | USD 486 million | 2.5% | USD 527 million | 8.40% | USD 1.09 billion |
| Rest of Asia Pacific | USD 389 million | 2.0% | USD 432 million | 11.0% | USD 1.10 billion |

China leads because its roughly 10 million beds are the region's largest installed base and its grading system rewards hospitals that reach higher EMR and smart service levels; Xunfei Healthcare said nearly 20 of its hospital customers had passed Level 5 EMR and Level 3 smart service evaluations, its [interim filing](https://www1.hkexnews.hk/listedco/listconews/sehk/2026/0818/2026081801219.pdf) shows. China grows 8.90% a year and its share falls from 44.0% to 41.8% by 2035. India, USD 1.94 billion, grows 14.0% a year because ABDM incentives, new medical college hospitals and private chains such as Apollo Hospitals and Narayana Health are digitising from a low base, at about USD 600 a bed against more than USD 4,000 in Japan, a Douglas Insights estimate.

Japan, USD 3.50 billion, grows 6.20% a year as hospitals replace on-premise EMRs with standard cloud systems before 2030. Southeast Asia, USD 1.65 billion, grows 12.5% a year on new private hospitals in Indonesia, Vietnam, the Philippines and Malaysia and on Singapore's national systems. South Korea, USD 1.56 billion, grows 9.00%; Australia and New Zealand, USD 1.36 billion, 7.60%; Taiwan, USD 486 million, 8.40%; the rest of Asia Pacific, 11.0%. Country values for 2035 sum to USD 47.7 billion, 0.65% below the headline; in the data table the row labelled Global holds the Asia Pacific total. Patient check-in terminals are sized separately in our [Asia Pacific Interactive Kiosk Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/asia-pacific-interactive-kiosk-market/) report.

## Which companies supply Asia Pacific smart hospitals, and how concentrated are the vendors?

Fujitsu is the largest Asia Pacific smart hospital vendor, with about 3.2% of 2025 value, USD 622 million, a Douglas Insights estimate. The top three, Fujitsu, Neusoft and Winning Health, hold about 8.2%; the market is fragmented.

| Company | What the position rests on | Estimated Asia Pacific share 2025 | Estimated value 2025 |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Fujitsu | HOPE EMR systems; 47% of Japanese hospitals with 400 or more beds | 3.2% | USD 622 million |
| Neusoft | Hospital information systems and regional health platforms in China | 2.6% | USD 505 million |
| Winning Health | Hospital information systems, EMR and AI products for Chinese hospitals | 2.4% | USD 467 million |
| Philips | Patient monitoring, tele-ICU and enterprise imaging informatics | 2.2% | USD 428 million |
| GE HealthCare | Connected monitoring, imaging AI and command centres | 1.9% | USD 369 million |
| Xunfei Healthcare | AI medical assistants in more than 700 Chinese hospitals | 0.6% | USD 117 million |
| Other vendors | NEC, Software Service, Siemens Healthineers, Oracle Health, Huawei, Medtronic, Mindray, Samsung SDS, Tata Consultancy Services and hundreds of local integrators | 87.1% | USD 16.9 billion |

All shares are Douglas Insights estimates because vendors report broader segments. Fujitsu's position rests on the 47% share of Japan's large hospital sector it cited in its [16 October 2026 release](https://global.fujitsu/en-global/subsidiaries/fjj/news/press-releases/2026/1016-01); the Xunfei Healthcare figure annualises its RMB 446.1 million of first-half 2026 revenue from its [interim results](https://www1.hkexnews.hk/listedco/listconews/sehk/2026/0818/2026081801219.pdf) at about RMB 7.2 to the dollar. Scale matters in EMR, where switching costs keep a hospital with one vendor for a decade or more, and in patient monitoring, where device makers sell the software with the hardware; it matters less in integration and networking, where local firms win on price. How European hospitals buy the same software is shown in our [Europe Hospital Management Software Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/europe-hospital-management-software-market/) report.

## How much does a smart hospital cost per bed in Asia Pacific?

An Asia Pacific hospital spent an average USD 1,215 a bed on smart hospital technology in 2025, Douglas Insights estimates, from about USD 300 in Indian district hospitals to more than USD 6,000 in large Japanese and Australian hospitals.

| Hospital type | Typical yearly smart technology spend per bed, 2025 | What it buys |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Indian district and small private hospitals | USD 300 to USD 700 | Basic HMIS, ABDM link, teleconsultation |
| Southeast Asian private hospitals | USD 800 to USD 2,000 | EMR, imaging archive, patient apps |
| Chinese Grade 3 hospitals | USD 1,200 to USD 2,500 | EMR upgrades, smart services, AI imaging |
| Korean and Taiwanese tertiary hospitals | USD 2,500 to USD 4,500 | Cloud EMR, connected monitoring, AI |
| Large Japanese and Australian hospitals | USD 4,000 to USD 6,500 | EMR replacement, command centres, cybersecurity |

The bands are Douglas Insights estimates from public tenders, hospital annual reports and vendor disclosures. Spend per bed rises with hospital grade because tertiary hospitals run more imaging, more intensive care beds and more integrations. Software is increasingly sold by subscription: cloud EMRs such as the Fujitsu system due in April 2027 turn a one-off licence into a yearly fee, which raises recorded spend per bed in the early years of migration. Hospital furniture is excluded here; the beds themselves are sized in our [Acute Care Hospital Beds and Stretchers Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/acute-care-hospital-beds-and-stretchers-market/) report.

## Which rules shape Asia Pacific smart hospitals: China's AI directive, Japan's DX roadmap or India's ABDM?

Three policy sets shape Asia Pacific smart hospitals most: China's AI healthcare directive of 4 November 2025, Japan's Healthcare DX Promotion Roadmap targeting EMRs in almost all facilities by 2030, and India's Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM).

China's directive sets 2027 for high-quality medical datasets and AI tools to be widely available and 2030 for AI-assisted diagnosis in primary care and AI imaging in all Grade 2 and above hospitals, [Caixin reported](https://www.caixinglobal.com/2025-11-06/china-unveils-ambitious-plan-to-weave-ai-into-healthcare-system-102380000.html); hospitals that want to keep their grade must buy. Japan's roadmap, from the [Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare](https://www.mhlw.go.jp/english/policy/health-medical/healthcare-dx/dl/Healthcare-DX-Promotion-Roadmap(Overview).pdf), adds electronic prescriptions and an EMR information sharing service, and vendors must now certify against the standard specification, as Fujitsu's 16 October 2026 release confirms.

India's ABDM pays hospitals through the Digital Health Incentive Scheme for each record they link; Rs 107 crore had been paid by 18 June 2026, and the government's eSushrut@Clinic system had onboarded more than 2,200 facilities, the [Press Information Bureau](https://static.pib.gov.in/WriteReadData/specificdocs/documents/2026/jul/doc202676912801.pdf) said. Incentives are small per hospital but make digital records a condition of participation in public schemes.

## What if budgets tighten or AI spreads faster: where does Asia Pacific smart hospital spending land in 2035?

The Asia Pacific smart hospital market ends 2035 between USD 36.2 billion and USD 59.4 billion across our three cases, around a base of USD 48.0 billion. Chinese AI adoption and public hospital budgets set the spread.

| Case | Bed leg | Spend per bed leg | 2035 value |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Slower | 0.40% | 6.00% | USD 36.2 billion |
| Base case | 0.80% | 8.60% | USD 48.0 billion |
| Faster | 1.20% | 10.5% | USD 59.4 billion |

In the slower case Chinese hospital consolidation continues, fee controls cut hospital surpluses and Japan's cloud EMR migration slips past 2030. In the faster case China's 2030 AI targets are met early, India's incentives widen and generative AI documentation spreads through Korean, Japanese and Australian wards. One extra point of yearly spend-per-bed growth adds USD 4.61 billion to 2035 Asia Pacific smart hospital value; one point less removes USD 4.24 billion.

The 9.47% base rate sits above the 7.85% we use for European hospital management software because Asia Pacific starts from lower spend per bed and adds AI mandates that Europe does not have.

## Douglas Exclusive: the Asia Pacific Beds-to-Bytes Ledger

The Asia Pacific Beds-to-Bytes Ledger is a Douglas Insights model built from 14 figures in 6 dated government and company releases of 2025 and 2026, tracking how hospitals swap bed growth for digital capacity.

| Date | Figure | Direction |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 4 November 2025 | China AI directive: AI imaging in all Grade 2+ hospitals by 2030 | Digital spend up |
| 6 July 2026 | India: 100 crore records, 90 crore ABHA accounts, 23.21 crore tokens, Rs 107 crore incentives | Digital use up |
| 18 August 2026 | Xunfei Healthcare revenue +49.4% to RMB 446.1 million; 700+ hospitals | Hospital AI up |
| 31 August 2026 | China beds about 10 million, -3% (-259,000); hospitals 38,160, -1% | Beds down |
| 2 September 2026 | China patient visits 10.65 billion, +510 million | Throughput up |
| 16 October 2026 | Fujitsu 47% of Japan's 400+ bed hospitals; cloud EHR April 2027 | EMR replacement due |

The finding, a Douglas Insights estimate: China handled 5.0% more patient visits in 2025 with 3% fewer beds, so visits per bed rose about 8%. Hospitals are buying throughput, not capacity, and that is what smart hospital spending pays for. We therefore hold the regional bed leg at 0.80% a year, with China at minus 0.5%, and put almost all growth into spend per bed, which rises 8.60% a year; a forecast built on bed growth would understate this market by more than half.

## How does the methodology turn 16.0 million beds into USD 19.4 billion of Asia Pacific smart hospital spending?

Our methodology multiplies 16.0 million Asia Pacific hospital beds in 2025 by an average smart technology spend of USD 1,215 a bed to reach USD 19.4 billion. Beds come from eight country builds.

The model covers 8 countries or sub-regions, 6 technologies and 4 hospital types, and uses 94 data points, 22 sourced and 72 modelled. Arithmetic: 16.0 million beds x USD 1,215 = USD 19.4 billion; USD 19.4 billion x (1.0080 x 1.0860)^10 = USD 48.0 billion. Beds reach 16.1 million in 2026 and 17.3 million in 2035; spend per bed reaches USD 1,319 in 2026.

Two cross-checks agree. First, China's 44.0% share implies about USD 855 a bed across its roughly 10 million beds, inside the band we see in Chinese hospital IT tenders once small township hospitals are included. Second, the top six vendors' estimated USD 2.51 billion is 12.9% of the market, consistent with the fragmented vendor base that Fujitsu's 47% share of only the largest Japanese hospitals implies. AI tools help draft the text and automated checks test the arithmetic and links; the Douglas Insights research desk chooses the sources, builds the model and approves publication, as our [editorial standards](https://www.douglasinsights.com/research-methodology/) explain.

## What counts in the Asia Pacific smart hospital market, and what is excluded?

The Asia Pacific smart hospital market counts what hospitals spend on six digital technology groups. Conventional medical equipment, imaging scanners, hospital construction, furniture, clinics without beds and consumer health apps are excluded.

The by-technology split covers hospital information systems and EMR, connected medical devices and IoT, network, cloud and smart building infrastructure, AI and clinical analytics, telehealth and virtual care platforms, and integration and managed services; the by-hospital-type split covers tertiary public, secondary public, private chain and specialty hospitals; the by-country split covers China, Japan, India, Southeast Asia, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand, Taiwan and the rest of Asia Pacific. Connected monitors are counted for their software and connectivity value, not for the monitor hardware.
