- Polaris leads with an estimated 29.6% share, and tariffs cost it USD 82 million in 2025.

Polaris, the North American leader in off-road vehicles, signed a definitive agreement on 10 October 2025 to sell a majority interest in Indian Motorcycle, a move its [2025 Form 10-K](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/931015/000162828026008033/pii-20251231.htm) frames around a sharper focus on off-road. The ATV and UTV market covers four-wheel all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), ridden astride with handlebars, and utility terrain vehicles (UTVs), the side-by-side machines with a bench or bucket seats, a steering wheel and a cargo bed. The global market stands at USD 15.43 billion in 2025, which is 1.236 million vehicles at an average realised price of USD 12,480, and Douglas Insights expects USD 24.79 billion by 2035, a revenue CAGR of 4.86% built from 2.6% volume growth and 2.2% price growth. Coverage sits under our [automotive and transportation research](https://www.douglasinsights.com/industry/automotive-transportation/), and every figure follows the [Douglas Insights research methodology](https://www.douglasinsights.com/research-methodology/).

## How is an ATV different from a UTV, and what does the market include?

An ATV seats one rider astride with handlebar steering, while a UTV seats 2 to 6 people side by side behind a wheel. Together they make up 1.236 million vehicles and USD 15.43 billion of 2025 revenue across farm and ranch, trail recreation and work sites, measured at realised vehicle prices.

Side-by-sides now carry 73.1% of ATV and UTV value. Two families sit inside that figure: the utility side-by-side, built for payload and towing, and the recreational and sport side-by-side, built for suspension travel and speed. Straddle ATVs carry the other 26.9%, split between utility ATV models with racks and winches and sport and youth ATV models sold mostly for leisure.

Scope rules are simple. We count new vehicles at the price the end user pays, across gasoline and electric propulsion. Snowmobiles, golf cars, three-wheel road vehicles and parts, garments and accessories (PG&A) are excluded. Military light tactical vehicles built on side-by-side chassis are also left out. Dealer floor sales and rental fleets both count, because both buy new units from the same factories.

## Who wins the ATV and UTV dealer floor, and what is each position built on?

Douglas Insights estimates the top three ATV and UTV makers, Polaris, BRP and Honda, hold 61.8% of 2025 value. Polaris alone holds 29.6%, a figure anchored on disclosed off-road revenue and North American retail volumes of about 780,000 units.

### The two North American leaders

Polaris remains the share leader. Its [fourth-quarter 2025 release](https://s27.q4cdn.com/214071222/files/doc_financials/2025/q4/PII-Q4-2025-Earnings-Release-1-27-26_F2.pdf) shows Off Road segment sales of USD 1.60 billion in the quarter, up 11%, and full-year company sales of USD 7.15 billion. The [results presentation](https://s27.q4cdn.com/214071222/files/doc_financials/2025/q4/2025-Q4-FY-PII-Earnings-Presentation-1-27-26_F2.pdf) puts full-year Off Road sales at USD 5.71 billion, flat on 2024, and lists USD 82 million of new tariff costs in 2025. Douglas Insights puts Polaris ATV and UTV revenue at about USD 4.57 billion after removing snowmobiles and PG&A, which is the 29.6% share above. The Indian Motorcycle sale, agreed on 10 October 2025 and closed in the first quarter of 2026 according to the [Polaris annual filing](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/931015/000162828026008033/pii-20251231.htm), leaves off-road as the company's core.

BRP is the challenger, selling the Can-Am Maverick and Defender side-by-sides and the Outlander ATV. Its [fiscal 2026 results release](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1748797/000119312526125052/d97540dex991.htm), dated 26 March 2026, shows Year-Round Products revenue of USD 4.80 billion and total revenue of USD 8.44 billion, up 6.8%. Year-Round Products also holds the three-wheel Spyder and Ryker, so Douglas Insights sizes BRP's ATV and UTV share at 22.4%, or USD 3.46 billion.

## How are CFMOTO, Yamaha and Textron competing for ATV and UTV buyers?

CFMOTO grew its all-terrain vehicle revenue 33.3% to CNY 9.61 billion, the fastest rise among the six ATV and UTV makers we track. Japanese makers defend farm loyalty, and Textron sells on value, so the three challengers hold about 16.1% of value between them.

Honda counts ATVs and side-by-sides inside its motorcycle business, which sold 20,572 thousand group units in the fiscal year ended 31 March 2025, according to its [Form 20-F](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/715153/000119312525142316/d877523d20f.htm). The Foreman, Rancher and Pioneer lines give Honda about 9.8% of ATV and UTV value in our model. Yamaha reports ATVs, ROVs and golf cars together; that Outdoor Land Vehicle segment fell 18% to JPY 77.7 billion in the first half of its fiscal year as side-by-side demand weakened while ATV sales held. CFMOTO is the fastest climber: its all-terrain vehicle segment earned CNY 9.61 billion from 197,000 vehicles, up 33.3%, and the company says it shipped 74.0% of China's ATV export value. Textron Specialized Vehicles sells the Arctic Cat and Tracker Off Road ranges and competes on value-priced crew-cab side-by-sides.

| Company | Main ATV and UTV brands | Douglas Insights share of 2025 value | Position built on |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Polaris | RZR, Ranger, General, Sportsman | 29.6% | North American dealer density, utility Ranger volume |
| BRP | Can-Am Maverick, Defender, Outlander | 22.4% | Rotax engines, sport side-by-side share gains |
| Honda | Foreman, Rancher, Pioneer | 9.8% | Farm ATV reliability, global motorcycle dealer base |
| CFMOTO | CForce, UForce, ZForce | 8.3% | Price, export reach into Europe and Australia |
| Yamaha | Grizzly, Kodiak, Wolverine | 4.6% | Utility ATV loyalty |
| Textron | Arctic Cat, Tracker Off Road | 3.2% | Value crew-cab side-by-sides |

## Which ATV and UTV vehicle type makes the most money?

The utility side-by-side leads the ATV and UTV market with 39.3% of 2025 value, or USD 6.06 billion. Farms, ranches and contractors replace pickups and straddle ATVs with three-seat cargo machines that tow, haul and carry crews.

| Vehicle type | Share of 2025 value | 2025 value | CAGR 2026-2035 | 2035 value |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Utility side-by-side | 39.3% | USD 6.06 billion | 4.71% | USD 9.61 billion |
| Recreational and sport side-by-side | 33.8% | USD 5.21 billion | 5.86% | USD 9.21 billion |
| Utility ATV | 19.4% | USD 2.99 billion | 3.67% | USD 4.29 billion |
| Sport and youth ATV | 7.5% | USD 1.16 billion | 3.94% | USD 1.70 billion |

Utility side-by-side models earn USD 6.06 billion because each sale replaces a farm truck or two ATVs at a higher ticket. The recreational and sport side-by-side segment, worth USD 5.21 billion, grows fastest at 5.86% a year: turbocharged four-seat models keep lifting the average price and trail-system permits keep widening where owners can ride. Utility ATV models hold USD 2.99 billion; ranchers still prefer a straddle machine for narrow gates and spraying. Sport and youth ATV models bring in USD 1.16 billion, the smallest pool, as youth buyers move to entry side-by-sides.

Mix shift does most of the work. By 2035 side-by-sides reach 75.9% of value in the Douglas Insights model, up from 73.1%.

## Why are side-by-side sales rising on farms, ranches and trail networks?

Three forces add 2.6 percentage points a year to ATV and UTV unit volume to 2035. They are farm and ranch fleet replacement, first-time buyers in Asia Pacific and Latin America, and the crew-cab trail side-by-side, each with a measured contribution below.

Farm and ranch replacement contributes 1.1 points. North American retail held at about 780,000 off-road units in 2025, up from 775,000 in 2024, according to the [Polaris 2025 annual report](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/931015/000162828026008033/pii-20251231.htm). Much of that base was bought in the 2020 to 2021 surge, and a working ATV or UTV on a cattle operation is usually traded in after six to eight seasons. Douglas Insights expects that replacement wave to lift utility side-by-side demand from 2026 to 2030, which is why the utility side-by-side keeps 38.8% of value in 2035.

New buyers outside North America add 0.9 points. CFMOTO grew all-terrain vehicle revenue 33.3% to CNY 9.61 billion on 197,000 vehicles, with about 70% of company revenue now earned overseas. Asia Pacific grows at 6.85% a year in our model, against 4.24% in North America. Agricultural mechanisation in Australia, New Zealand and Southeast Asia is the main channel, and Chinese pricing opens the door for farms that never bought a Japanese ATV.

Recreational crew-cab side-by-sides add the last 0.6 points. BRP reported North American powersports retail up 12% in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2026, with share gains in off-road vehicles, in its [26 March 2026 release](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1748797/000119312526125052/d97540dex991.htm). Four-seat sport models carry families into trail systems that were built for ATVs, and each unit sells above USD 20,000. Polaris also reported North America ORV retail, excluding youth models, up 5% in the fourth quarter of 2025.

Replacement timing matters for dealers. A ranch that bought two utility ATV units in 2021 often swaps both for one three-seat utility side-by-side, which trims ATV unit counts by one but lifts revenue per farm by about 40% in our model. That trade explains why ATV and UTV value grows faster than units in every region we model, and why the utility side-by-side alone adds USD 3.54 billion of value between 2025 and 2035.

Add the three and the volume leg is 2.6% a year: 1.1 plus 0.9 plus 0.6. Price adds 2.2% a year from mix rather than list increases, since Polaris described full-year 2025 net price as lower in a more promotional market.

## Which headwinds slow ATV and UTV orders, and by how many points?

Tariffs, heavy promotions and safety recalls remove 0.9 points from an unconstrained 3.5% annual ATV and UTV volume path. That is why the Douglas Insights base case runs at 2.6% rather than at the pace of the 2020 to 2021 boom.

Tariffs take 0.4 points. Polaris booked USD 82 million of new tariff costs in 2025 and guides to a headwind of about USD 90 million in 2026, weighted to the first half, in its [27 January 2026 presentation](https://s27.q4cdn.com/214071222/files/doc_financials/2025/q4/2025-Q4-FY-PII-Earnings-Presentation-1-27-26_F2.pdf). Engines, electronics and finished side-by-sides cross borders between Mexico, the United States, Canada and Asia, so the cost lands on the whole ATV and UTV supply chain.

Promotional pricing takes 0.3 points. Dealers carried heavy stock into 2025, and Polaris reported lower net price for the year. Rebates and floor-plan support pull demand forward and leave fewer buyers for the next season.

Recalls and safety exposure take 0.2 points. Textron recalled about 7,000 Arctic Cat Prowler Pro and Tracker 800SX side-by-sides in the United States, plus about 700 in Canada, on 17 October 2024 because the vehicles can roll while the dash shows park, according to the [CPSC recall notice](https://www.cpsc.gov/Recalls/2025/Textron-Specialized-Vehicles-Expands-Recall-of-Arctic-Cat-and-Tracker-Side-by-Side-Recreational-Off-Highway-Vehicles-Due-to-Crash-Hazard-Recall-Alert). Each recall raises insurance and warranty cost per ATV and UTV sold.

## Where are ATV and UTV sales growing fastest outside North America?

North America generates 61.4% of ATV and UTV value, or USD 9.47 billion in 2025. Asia Pacific grows fastest at 6.85% a year, rising from USD 2.41 billion to USD 4.67 billion by 2035 as farms mechanise and Chinese brands export.

North America reaches USD 14.35 billion by 2035 at 4.24% a year, held back only by its large installed base. Europe is worth USD 2.27 billion in 2025 and grows 4.96% to USD 3.68 billion, led by homologated tractor-registered side-by-sides for forestry and farms. Latin America brings in USD 786.7 million and grows 5.74% to USD 1.37 billion, mostly utility ATV and UTV models for [coffee](https://www.douglasinsights.com/coffee-market/), sugar and cattle estates. The Middle East and Africa is the wildcard: USD 493.7 million in 2025 and USD 718.2 million by 2035 at 3.82%, with desert sport side-by-sides in the Gulf and mine-site fleets in southern Africa pulling in opposite directions.

CFMOTO claims first place in the UK ATV and UTV market on Agricultural Engineers Association registration data, which shows how quickly price-led brands can take European farm buyers.

## How much do buyers pay for an ATV or a side-by-side?

The blended ATV and UTV price is USD 12,480 per vehicle in 2025. Douglas Insights expects USD 15,514 by 2035, as buyers trade up from straddle ATVs into four-seat side-by-sides that sell above USD 20,000.

Price bands are wide. Textron's recalled Prowler Pro and Tracker 800SX side-by-sides sold for USD 14,400 to USD 21,000, according to the [CPSC notice](https://www.cpsc.gov/Recalls/2025/Textron-Specialized-Vehicles-Expands-Recall-of-Arctic-Cat-and-Tracker-Side-by-Side-Recreational-Off-Highway-Vehicles-Due-to-Crash-Hazard-Recall-Alert), a fair marker for a mid-range utility side-by-side. CFMOTO's segment revenue works out to about CNY 48,800 per vehicle at factory level, the floor for the global market. Douglas Insights price bands put youth ATV models at USD 3,000 to USD 5,500, utility ATV models at USD 7,500 to USD 13,000 and turbocharged sport side-by-sides at USD 22,000 to USD 38,000.

Electric models sit at a premium of USD 2,000 to USD 5,000 over gasoline peers of similar size in our model. The 2.2% price leg is mix, not inflation.

## Which CPSC rules and ANSI/SVIA standards must a new ATV meet?

Every four-wheel ATV made for the US market from 1 January 2025 must meet ANSI/SVIA 1-2023 under the CPSC rule at 16 CFR Part 1420. The rule also keeps new three-wheel ATVs out of US commerce until a mandatory standard exists.

The [16 CFR Part 1420 text](https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-16/chapter-II/subchapter-B/part-1420) shows how the ATV rule has moved: first published on 14 November 2008, it adopted ANSI/SVIA 1-2017, approved on 8 June 2017, and then ANSI/SVIA 1-2023, approved on 17 March 2023, for vehicles made on or after 1 January 2025. Each ATV must also be covered by an approved action plan for rider training and age labelling.

Side-by-sides follow a voluntary standard rather than a federal rule. The Polaris annual filing confirms that the CPSC oversees product safety for off-road vehicles and that makers build to voluntary industry standards. In Europe, farm UTV models are usually type-approved as tractors, which adds lighting and braking work to each ATV and UTV variant sold there.

## What if tariffs or electric side-by-sides change the 2035 ATV and UTV outlook?

Douglas Insights runs three ATV and UTV cases for 2035, with the base case at USD 24.79 billion. A slower case lands at USD 21.19 billion and a faster case at USD 28.40 billion, with tariff policy and electric adoption as the swing inputs.

The slower case uses 1.4% volume and 1.8% price, a 3.23% revenue CAGR: tariffs persist beyond the USD 90 million Polaris has flagged for 2026 and dealers keep discounting. The faster case uses 3.7% volume and 2.5% price, a 6.29% CAGR: Asia Pacific farm demand compounds and electric utility side-by-sides win ranch and campus fleets.

Volume is the lever that matters. One extra point of annual unit growth adds USD 2.52 billion to 2035 revenue, and one point less takes away USD 2.31 billion. Published forecasts for the ATV and UTV market range from 4.64% to 7.6% a year; our 4.86% is near the bottom of that range because we count realised prices after promotions.

Polaris completing the Indian Motorcycle sale in the first quarter of 2026, after the 10 October 2025 agreement disclosed in its [10-K](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/931015/000162828026008033/pii-20251231.htm), gives the market leader more capital for off-road products. That supports the faster case for side-by-sides.

## Douglas Exclusive: the ATV and UTV Model-Year Calendar

The ATV and UTV Model-Year Calendar is a Douglas Insights model built from 10 sourced inputs: four regulatory dates, one recall, four company filings and one company disclosure. It lines each dated event up against the model year it affects, so buyers can see when ATV and UTV cost or supply changes reach the dealer floor.

The calendar's finding: three of its eight dated rows fall within the six months from 10 October 2025 to 26 March 2026, so the 2027 model year carries the tariff, portfolio and mix decisions of both North American leaders at once. The two remaining inputs, Honda's 20,572 thousand-unit motorcycle and ATV volume and CFMOTO's 197,000 vehicles, set the volume scale. Douglas Insights counts USD 172 million of disclosed Polaris tariff cost across 2025 and 2026, about 3.8% of its estimated ATV and UTV revenue.

## How we built the ATV and UTV model, unit by unit?

The ATV and UTV model multiplies 1.236 million vehicles by USD 12,480 to reach USD 15.43 billion. It then grows units at 2.6% and price at 2.2% to USD 24.79 billion in 2035, checked against company revenue and published growth rates.

North America supplies 780,000 retail units, the Polaris management estimate, or 63.1% of global volume. The other 456,000 units come from five-region shares cross-checked against CFMOTO's 197,000 vehicles and Honda's group unit totals. Company revenue sets the value check: Polaris USD 5.71 billion Off Road plus BRP USD 4.80 billion Year-Round Products equals USD 10.51 billion, including snowmobiles and parts, against our USD 8.03 billion for the two firms' ATV and UTV wholegoods, which agrees once non-ATV lines are removed. Four published CAGRs, 4.64%, 6.8%, 7.2% and 7.6%, set the outside range.
