Automotive Gas Cylinder Market size: USD 3.11 billion in 2025, heading for USD 5.31 billion by 2035 at 5.51% a year. The automotive gas cylinder market covers the on-board pressure vessels and cryogenic tanks that store compressed natural gas (CNG), liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), liquefied natural gas (LNG) and hydrogen on cars, three-wheelers, buses and trucks. Our receipt is simple: 6.12 million cylinders shipped in 2025 at an average USD 507.4 each gives USD 3.11 billion. Heavy trucks now set the pace: on 3 February 2026 Hexagon Agility [announced a USD 11.7 million order](https://hexagongroup.com/news/hexagon-agility-heavy-duty-truck-mexico-order) for Type 4 composite fuel systems on sleeper trucks run by a leading Mexican fleet. The study belongs to the [automotive components](https://www.douglasinsights.com/industry/automotive-transportation/automotive-components/) practice, and every number below follows the Douglas Insights [research methodology](https://www.douglasinsights.com/research-methodology/).

## How much does an on-board CNG cylinder or a 700-bar hydrogen vessel cost in 2025?

Prices for an automotive gas cylinder run from about USD 140 for a 60-litre steel CNG bottle to USD 6,500 for a 700-bar hydrogen vessel. Douglas Insights puts the 2025 blended average at USD 507.4 per cylinder across all four fuel gases, because cheap steel units dominate volume while composite tanks dominate value.

Steel Type 1 cylinders for Indian hatchbacks sell in a band of roughly USD 140 to USD 230. LPG autogas tanks, mostly toroidal units hidden in the spare-wheel well, average USD 259.6. Type 4 all-composite CNG tanks for Class 8 trucks fetch USD 2,400 to USD 4,800 per vessel, and a truck carries four to eight of them. LNG cryogenic fuel tanks average USD 2,710, pulled down by high-volume Chinese tank builders. Hydrogen pressure vessels average USD 4,602 each.

| Fuel gas | Cylinders shipped 2025 (thousand) | Average price (USD) | 2025 value |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| CNG cylinders | 3,317 | 445.6 | USD 1.48 billion |
| LPG autogas tanks | 2,500 | 259.6 | USD 649.0 million |
| LNG fuel tanks | 220 | 2,710 | USD 596.2 million |
| Hydrogen pressure vessels | 83 | 4,602 | USD 382.0 million |
| Total | 6,120 | 507.4 | USD 3.11 billion |

Price direction is up, slowly. Douglas Insights models the average cylinder price rising 1.35% a year to 2035. The driver is mix: every heavy truck that moves from diesel to natural gas adds several thousand dollars of carbon-fibre vessel, while the steel cylinder price barely moves. Long-term contracts also bite. Everest Kanto Cylinder told investors in May 2025 that contracts in India and the UAE sat under pricing pressure.

## Which fuel gas makes the money: CNG cylinders, LPG autogas tanks, LNG fuel tanks or hydrogen vessels?

CNG cylinders make the money, with 47.6% of 2025 automotive gas cylinder revenue, or USD 1.48 billion. Their lead comes from sheer count: 3.32 million CNG cylinders went onto Indian cars, three-wheelers, buses and North American trucks, more than every other fuel gas combined.

| Segment | Share 2025 | 2025 value | Growth 2026-2035 | 2035 value |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| CNG cylinders | 47.6% | USD 1.48 billion | 5.48% | USD 2.52 billion |
| LPG autogas tanks | 20.9% | USD 649.0 million | 1.87% | USD 781.1 million |
| LNG fuel tanks | 19.2% | USD 596.2 million | 6.27% | USD 1.10 billion |
| Hydrogen pressure vessels | 12.3% | USD 382.0 million | 9.16% | USD 917.7 million |

CNG cylinders hold USD 1.48 billion because India alone fits more than 2 million of them a year and North American truck fleets buy the costliest Type 4 versions. LPG autogas tanks earn USD 649.0 million on volume from a mature 27 million vehicle fleet, but grow just 1.87% a year as European conversions fade. LNG fuel tanks bring in USD 596.2 million, nearly all from Chinese heavy trucks, and expand 6.27% a year. Hydrogen pressure vessels are the fastest-growing segment at 9.16% a year, from USD 382.0 million to USD 917.7 million, since each fuel cell truck needs several 700-bar carbon-fibre tanks.

By construction, the split runs differently. Type 1 steel accounts for most units but under a third of value; Type 2 hoop-wrapped and Type 3 metal-lined composite cylinders fill bus and van roofs; Type 4 all-composite vessels take the truck and hydrogen work. By vehicle, passenger cars, three-wheelers, light commercial vehicles, heavy trucks and buses all draw on the same four fuel gases.

## Why are fleets and carmakers buying more CNG and LNG cylinders through 2035?

Cylinder volume grows 4.10% a year, and four vehicle programmes supply all of it. Douglas Insights splits that volume leg into Indian CNG cars and three-wheelers, heavy natural gas trucks, CNG buses and vans elsewhere, and hydrogen vehicles, each with its own points.

Indian CNG cars add 1.48 points. Passenger vehicle sales in India reached 4.3 million in the 2024-25 fiscal year, and CNG models took 26% of passenger vehicle sales in August 2025 and 32% in August 2026. The refuelling grid is no longer the bottleneck. [India's gas regulator counted 8,205 CNG stations](https://pngrb.gov.in/data-bank/20250630-CGD-MIS-Report.pdf) on 30 June 2025 against a pro-rata target of 5,389, and its long-run work programme calls for 18,336. Maruti Suzuki, with about 70% of Indian CNG car sales, sold around 80,000 CNG cars a month in 2026, and each of those cars carries at least one steel cylinder.

Heavy natural gas trucks add 1.21 points. China sold 198,700 natural gas heavy trucks in 2025, up 12% and a new high, and nearly every one of them leaves the factory with an LNG fuel tank. In North America the Cummins X15N engine opened what Hexagon Agility says is an extra 200,000 heavy-duty trucks a year to natural gas. Hexagon Agility tied a USD 4.3 million order from more than 20 Class 8 fleets in May 2025 to that engine, and the 3 February 2026 Mexican order for Type 4 sleeper-truck systems confirmed the pull south of the border.

CNG buses and light commercial vehicles outside India add 0.74 points, mostly in Latin America, Egypt and South-East Asia, where fleets switch to cheaper gas. Hydrogen vehicles add the last 0.67 points. Volume is small, roughly 83,000 vessels in 2025, but a fuel cell truck needs several 700-bar tanks, so each vehicle multiplies the cylinder count three to six times over. OPmobility, for example, shows a 304-litre, 700-bar tank holding about 12 kg of hydrogen for heavy trucks.

Together 1.48, 1.21, 0.74 and 0.67 points make the 4.10% volume leg of the automotive gas cylinder forecast. Indian cars and Chinese trucks alone supply 2.69 of those points, or 66% of all volume growth. That weighting matters for suppliers: a steel cylinder line in India and an LNG tank plant in China serve the two programmes that move the market most.

## Which barriers slow automotive gas cylinder volume: battery trucks, autogas decline or carbon fibre costs?

Three barriers remove 1.26 points a year from gross automotive gas cylinder demand of 5.36 points, leaving the 4.10% net volume leg. Battery-electric trucks, a shrinking European LPG conversion trade and costly carbon fibre each take a measurable bite.

Battery-electric trucks take 0.58 points. Chinese new-energy heavy truck sales jumped 181.75% in 2025, far faster than the 12% gain for gas trucks, and every battery truck that replaces an LNG truck removes a cryogenic fuel tank from the order book.

Fading autogas conversions take 0.41 points. LPG supplied about 25 million tonnes of transport fuel in 2022, only 7% of global LPG use, and the European conversion workshops that once fitted hundreds of thousands of tanks a year are shrinking as petrol cars give way to hybrids.

Carbon fibre and recertification costs take 0.27 points. A Type 4 tank can cost twenty times a steel cylinder, and US rules require a CNG container on a heavy vehicle to be inspected at least every 12 months, which adds fleet cost. Hexagon Purus, a maker of hydrogen vessels and fuel systems, reported second-quarter 2026 revenue of NOK 146 million, down 25% year on year, a reminder that hydrogen orders still arrive in lumps.

## Which vehicles carry the most gas cylinders: three-wheelers, cars, buses or Class 8 trucks?

Passenger cars carry about 58% of automotive gas cylinders by count in 2025 but under 30% of value. Heavy trucks and buses flip that ratio, because one truck can need eight Type 4 cylinders worth more than USD 20,000 in total.

Three-wheelers in Indian cities run a single small steel bottle. Light commercial vehicles and vans typically carry two or three cylinders under the floor. City buses carry roof racks of Type 3 or Type 4 vessels, and a Class 8 tractor using the X15N engine carries a back-of-cab system rated for up to 1,200 miles in the Mexican sleeper-truck order. Douglas Insights counts heavy trucks and buses together at about 6% of 2025 cylinder units and about 38% of value.

## Who supplies the Type 4 tanks and steel CNG cylinders that vehicle builders fit?

Douglas Insights estimates the top three suppliers, Hexagon Agility, CIMC Enric and Everest Kanto Cylinder, hold 16.5% of automotive gas cylinder revenue, a fragmented field. Hexagon Agility leads with an estimated 6.8% share, built on North American truck and bus fuel systems.

### Leaders and what their positions rest on

Hexagon Composites, parent of Hexagon Agility, reported first-half 2026 revenue of NOK 1.30 billion, with the Fuel Systems segment carrying the half. Its Type 4 systems ride on the Cummins X15N ramp described above.

Everest Kanto Cylinder grew consolidated revenue 22.6% to Rs. 1,499.2 crore in the 2024-25 fiscal year, with a 60:40 split between CNG and industrial cylinders, and is adding plants at Mundra and in Egypt. Faber Industrie says it has produced more than 7 million cylinders for natural gas vehicles, sold in over 40 countries, across all four cylinder types and working pressures up to 700 bar. CIMC Enric markets 60-litre vehicle CNG cylinders to car and conversion buyers.

Luxfer makes G-Stor carbon composite cylinders for on-vehicle CNG and hydrogen storage on buses and trucks; its [2025 annual report](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1096056/000109605626000015/lxfr-20251231.htm) shows Gas Cylinders at about 45% of consolidated net sales, after it sold its Graphic Arts business on 2 July 2025. Worthington Enterprises reshaped its exposure on 29 May 2024, when it [agreed to buy Hexagon Ragasco for about USD 98 million](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/108516/000095017024065902/wor-ex99_1.htm) and sold 49% of its Sustainable Energy Solutions business to Hexagon for about USD 10 million. OPmobility supplies 700-bar hydrogen tanks for trucks and vans from France.

| Company | Main automotive gas cylinder line | Douglas Insights share estimate 2025 |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Hexagon Agility | Type 4 CNG and RNG truck and bus systems | 6.8% |
| CIMC Enric | Steel CNG cylinders and LNG tanks | 6.2% |
| Everest Kanto Cylinder | Steel CNG cylinders for India and exports | 3.5% |
| Faber Industrie | Type 1 to Type 4 NGV cylinders | 3.1% |
| Luxfer | G-Stor composite CNG and hydrogen cylinders | 1.7% |
| OPmobility | 700-bar hydrogen vessels | 0.9% |

## Where are automotive gas cylinders bought: India, China, Europe's autogas belt or the US truck corridors?

Asia Pacific buys the most automotive gas cylinders, USD 1.64 billion or 52.7% of 2025 value, because India and China together take more than half of global units. Asia Pacific is also the fastest-growing region at 6.18% a year.

Asia Pacific grows fastest at 6.18% a year to USD 2.98 billion in 2035, as Indian CNG car share climbs and Chinese LNG trucks keep selling. Europe follows at USD 586.9 million but grows only 3.42% a year, since its autogas fleet in Poland, Italy and Germany is ageing. North America holds USD 416.1 million and grows 6.05% a year on heavy truck fuel systems. Latin America accounts for USD 226.7 million, growing 5.24% a year with Mexican truck fleets and Brazilian and Argentine CNG cars. The Middle East and Africa hold USD 239.1 million and grow 4.69% a year. The wildcard is Mexico: a 100-truck Trayecto programme in 2025 and a USD 11.7 million Type 4 order in 2026 show how fast a single fleet can move a national cylinder count.

## How fast does Type 4 composite share lift the automotive gas cylinder bill before 2035?

Type 4 composite vessels lift the average automotive gas cylinder price by 1.35% a year to 2035, the whole price leg of the forecast. Steel cylinder prices stay roughly flat, so the gain comes from mix, not list price increases.

Douglas Insights expects Type 4 and hydrogen vessels to rise from about 23% of 2025 value toward a third by 2035. Without that mix shift, volume alone would carry the market to about USD 4.64 billion in 2035, some USD 670 million short of the base figure. The 2035 volume reaches about 9.15 million cylinders.

## Is hydrogen pressure vessel volume large enough to matter to cylinder makers yet?

Hydrogen pressure vessels already earn USD 382.0 million, 12.3% of automotive gas cylinder revenue, on only about 83,000 tanks. Each vessel averages USD 4,602, nine times the blended cylinder price, so a small fleet moves real money.

The vehicle base is fragile. Global hydrogen vehicle sales fell more than 20% in 2024 for a second year, and China now holds almost 95% of the world's fuel cell commercial vehicle stock. Douglas Insights therefore models hydrogen at 9.16% a year, slower than many hydrogen roadmaps, ending at USD 917.7 million in 2035. For the station side of the chain, see our [Hydrogen Refuelling Station Equipment Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/hydrogen-refuelling-station-equipment-market/) and [Hydrogen Fuel Cell Heavy Trucks Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/hydrogen-fuel-cell-heavy-trucks-market/) studies.

## What if Class 8 gas trucks or Chinese LNG truck sales stall before 2035?

A stall would cut the 2035 automotive gas cylinder market to USD 4.43 billion, while a stronger truck cycle would lift it to USD 6.22 billion. Our base case lands at USD 5.31 billion, built from 4.10% volume and 1.35% price growth.

| Case | Volume leg | Price leg | 2035 value |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Slower | 2.60% | 1.00% | USD 4.43 billion |
| Base case | 4.10% | 1.35% | USD 5.31 billion |
| Faster | 5.40% | 1.70% | USD 6.22 billion |

The slower case assumes Chinese buyers shift heavy trucks to batteries faster and North American X15N orders stay at pilot scale. The faster case assumes the Mexican rollout that began with the 3 February 2026 Type 4 order spreads across Latin American fleets and India reaches CNG in four of every ten passenger cars. Volume is the lever to watch: one point more or less of yearly cylinder growth swings the 2035 total by roughly USD 510 million. Published forecasts sit between about 4.8% and 6.2% a year; our 5.51% lands in the upper half of that band because we weight heavy trucks more.

## Which rules govern on-board cylinder approval under UN Regulation 110 and FMVSS 304?

Two rulebooks cover most automotive gas cylinders sold in 2025: UN Regulation 110 in Europe and other countries that apply UN vehicle rules, and FMVSS 304 in the United States. Both sort CNG containers into four construction types.

[UN Regulation 110](https://eur-lex.europa.eu/eli/reg/2015/110/oj/eng), published in the EU Official Journal in its 2015 version, sets approval for CNG and LNG components and defines CNG-1 metal, CNG-2 hoop-wrapped, CNG-3 fully wrapped and CNG-4 all-composite cylinders. Production cylinders are pressure tested at no less than 1.5 times working pressure, and LNG tanks at 1.3 times. In the United States, [FMVSS 304](https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-49/subtitle-B/chapter-V/part-571/subpart-B/section-571.304) requires each CNG container label to call for inspection at least every 12 months on vehicles over 4,536 kg and every 36 months or 36,000 miles on lighter ones. That inspection cycle keeps a steady replacement trade alive for cylinders that fail checks.

## Douglas Exclusive: the Automotive Gas Cylinder Fuel Atlas

The Fuel Atlas is a Douglas Insights model, built from 13 sourced inputs, that maps 2025 automotive gas cylinder shipments to ten vehicle markets. Its inputs are sales counts, fleet sizes, station counts and fleet orders, and each market carries its dominant fuel gas. It is our estimate, not an official register.

| Market | Dominant fuel gas | Sourced anchor | Estimated cylinders 2025 (thousand) |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| India | CNG | 8,205 CNG stations; CNG at 32% of car sales | 2,240 |
| China | LNG and CNG | 198,700 gas heavy trucks sold | 1,010 |
| Italy | LPG and CNG | 2.6 million autogas vehicles | 260 |
| Turkey | LPG | Top-five autogas consumer | 240 |
| Russia | LPG | Top-five autogas consumer | 230 |
| Poland | LPG | 3.46 million autogas vehicles | 210 |
| South Korea | LPG and hydrogen | Top-five autogas consumer | 190 |
| United States | CNG and RNG | 200,000 extra trucks a year addressable | 120 |
| Mexico | CNG | 100-truck Trayecto programme | 40 |
| Germany | LPG | 0.38 million autogas vehicles | 30 |

The atlas places 4.57 million of the 6.12 million cylinders, or 74.7%, in these ten markets. India and China alone account for 3.25 million cylinders, 53.1% of world units. The finding: automotive gas cylinder demand is concentrated where a government made gas cheaper than diesel or petrol, not where vehicle sales are largest.

## How the model turns 6.12 million cylinders into USD 3.11 billion: what are the receipts?

Douglas Insights reckons 6.12 million automotive gas cylinders at USD 507.4 equal USD 3.11 billion in 2025. The model counts four fuel gases, five regions and 14 countries, and draws on 31 data points, of which 13 are sourced inputs.

Units by fuel: 3,317,000 CNG cylinders plus 2,500,000 LPG autogas tanks plus 220,000 LNG fuel tanks plus 83,000 hydrogen pressure vessels equal 6,120,000. Value by fuel: USD 1.48 billion plus USD 649.0 million plus USD 596.2 million plus USD 382.0 million equal USD 3.11 billion. Growth: 1.0410 times 1.0135 gives 5.51% a year, so USD 3.11 billion in 2025 becomes USD 5.31 billion in 2035.

Two cross-checks. First, Indian CNG volume: 4.3 million passenger cars at a 26% to 32% CNG share implies 1.1 to 1.4 million CNG cars, which with three-wheelers and buses agrees with our 2.24 million Indian cylinders within 9%. Second, supplier revenue: Everest Kanto's CNG line, about 60% of Rs. 1,499.2 crore or roughly USD 105 million, matches our 3.5% share estimate within 0.2 points. Neighbouring infrastructure is covered in the [Natural Gas Compressor Stations Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/natural-gas-compressor-stations-market/) report.
