USD 168 per vehicle is the average realised price of a factory parking set in 2025, our model finds, and that single number explains most of this business. The automotive parking system market covers the ultrasonic sensors, parking cameras, surround-view systems and automated park-assist software that carmakers and fitters put on light vehicles to help drivers manoeuvre into a space. Douglas Insights counts 71.6 million parking sets fitted in 2025; 71.6 million sets x USD 168 = USD 12.03 billion. With 3.4% more sets a year and a 5.60% annual rise in average set value, the automotive parking system market grows at 9.19% a year to USD 28.98 billion by 2035. Regulation set the floor: the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) [published its rear visibility rule on 7 April 2014](https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2014/04/07/2014-07469/federal-motor-vehicle-safety-standards-rear-visibility), requiring rearview cameras on new light vehicles under 10,000 pounds from 1 May 2018. The study belongs to our [ADAS and autonomous driving research](https://www.douglasinsights.com/industry/automotive-transportation/automotive-components/adas-autonomous-driving/) and follows the [Douglas Insights research methodology](https://www.douglasinsights.com/research-methodology/).

## Which ultrasonic sensors, cameras and park-assist controllers belong in an automotive parking system?

The automotive parking system comprises four hardware and software layers worth USD 12.03 billion together in 2025: ultrasonic park-distance sensors, rear-view parking cameras, surround-view camera systems, and automated park-assist software and controllers. Our scope covers passenger cars and light commercial vehicles, through OEM fitment and aftermarket retrofit.

An original equipment manufacturer (OEM) buys most of the value as a set: 4 to 12 ultrasonic transducers in the bumpers, one or more cameras, and an electronic control unit (ECU) that turns echoes and images into a beep, a bird's-eye view or a steering command. Aftermarket retrofit kits sold through fitters are counted too, at their realised trade price. Parking garages that move cars on robotic platforms are excluded; they sit in our [Automated Parking Systems Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/automated-parking-systems-market/) report. Highway driving functions such as adaptive cruise and lane centring are sized in the [ADAS Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/adas-market/) study, so a surround-view camera is counted here only for its parking value.

Passenger cars take 83.4% of the 71.6 million sets in our count. Light commercial vehicles take the other 16.6%, mostly vans with rear sensors and a reversing camera.

## How much does a carmaker pay per vehicle for ultrasonic sensors and a parking camera?

A carmaker pays about USD 168 per vehicle on average for a parking set in 2025, Douglas Insights estimates, from USD 38 for four rear sensors to over USD 600 for automated parking. The spread reflects sensor count, camera count and whether software steers the car.

Regulators give the clearest public price anchor. NHTSA's [rear visibility final rule](https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2014/04/07/2014-07469/federal-motor-vehicle-safety-standards-rear-visibility) costed a full rearview video system at USD 132 to USD 142 per vehicle and a camera-only installation at USD 43 to USD 45. Those 2014 figures still bracket what a rear-view parking camera realises today once display integration is shared with the infotainment screen.

### Realised price bands by parking set

| Parking set | Typical content | Realised price per vehicle, 2025 (USD) |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Rear park-distance set | 4 ultrasonic sensors, buzzer, small ECU | 38 to 62 |
| Front and rear park-distance set | 8 to 12 ultrasonic sensors, ECU | 95 to 150 |
| Rear-view parking camera | 1 camera, guide-line software | 43 to 142 |
| Surround-view camera system | 4 cameras, domain controller share | 260 to 420 |
| Automated park assist and remote parking | 12 sensors, 4 cameras, steering software | 480 to 690 |

Douglas Insights expects the blended automotive parking system price to rise 5.6% a year, to USD 289.70 by 2035. The driver is mix, not inflation. Unit prices for a single ultrasonic transducer keep falling, yet each year a larger share of buyers moves up a band. A buyer moving from a 4-sensor rear set to a surround-view system multiplies the bill roughly 7 times.

## Which parking system type earns the most, ultrasonic sensors or surround-view cameras?

Ultrasonic park-distance sensors earn the most, USD 4.05 billion or 33.7% of the automotive parking system total in 2025, because nearly every mid-range car carries 4 to 12 of them. Surround-view cameras follow at 25.4%, and automated park-assist software grows fastest.

| Segment | Share 2025 | Value 2025 | CAGR 2026-2035 | Value 2035 |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Ultrasonic park-distance sensors | 33.7% | USD 4.05 billion | 3.5% | USD 5.72 billion |
| Surround-view camera systems | 25.4% | USD 3.06 billion | 11.7% | USD 9.24 billion |
| Rear-view parking cameras | 21.6% | USD 2.60 billion | 2.9% | USD 3.46 billion |
| Automated park-assist software and controllers | 19.3% | USD 2.32 billion | 16.2% | USD 10.42 billion |

Ultrasonic park-distance sensors hold USD 4.05 billion because they are the cheapest way to warn of a bollard, and Valeo says it introduced the first ultrasonic parking solution in 1991. Their 3.5% growth lags: camera and radar fusion takes over some sensor positions.

Surround-view camera systems carry USD 3.06 billion at a 25.4% share and grow 11.7% a year to USD 9.24 billion. A four-camera 360-degree view moves down from premium trims into mass-market SUVs, where narrow city bays make it a selling point.

Rear-view parking cameras account for USD 2.60 billion, a 21.6% share, and grow only 2.9%. The United States mandate already puts one on almost every new light vehicle, so growth there tracks production, not fitment.

Automated park-assist software and controllers are the fastest-growing segment at 16.2% a year, from USD 2.32 billion to USD 10.42 billion. Remote parking by smartphone, memory parking and trained routes into a home garage turn a sensor set into a feature carmakers can charge for, and Chinese brands make it standard on mid-priced electric cars.

## Do aftermarket parking sensor kits still matter next to factory fitment?

Aftermarket parking sensor kits supply about 7.8% of automotive parking system value in our model, roughly USD 938 million in 2025, against 92.2% from OEM fitment. Retrofit matters most where base trims ship without sensors, mainly in Latin America, the Middle East and Africa.

A fitter installs a 4-sensor rear kit for well under USD 100 in parts, and replacement sensors for crash repairs add a steady stream. Repair is the larger opportunity in mature markets. Each bumper strike can mean a new transducer plus recalibration, and the [Automotive Steering Angle Sensor Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/automotive-steering-angle-sensor-market/) report shows how calibration work spreads across chassis sensors as automated parking steers the car. Douglas Insights puts the aftermarket share at 6.1% by 2035 as factory fitment approaches saturation.

## Why are surround-view cameras and remote park-assist pulling parking demand upward?

Three forces add 4.7 points of gross volume growth to the automotive parking system: Chinese automated parking, mandated reversing detection and rising light-vehicle output. Restraints take 1.3 points back, leaving the 3.4% volume leg in our 2026 to 2035 model. The price leg is separate and covered above.

Chinese automated parking adds 1.8 points, the largest share. BYD has said more than 1 million vehicles with its God's Eye driver assistance system have been delivered, and it offers to cover losses from its intelligent parking function in China. When a mass-market brand at that scale fits 12 sensors and several cameras per car, the parking set stops being an option and becomes standard equipment. Douglas Insights models automated parking fitment in Asia Pacific rising from 17% of new light vehicles in 2025 to 52% by 2035.

Mandated reversing detection adds 1.3 points. Regulation (EU) 2019/2144, the General Safety Regulation (GSR), [applies from 6 July 2022](https://eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-content/EN/TXT/HTML/?uri=CELEX:32019R2144) and lists reversing detection, a system that makes the driver aware of people and objects at the rear, among the equipment motor vehicles must carry. In the United States, Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 111 requires a rearview image on vehicles under 10,000 pounds. Both rules push sensors or a parking camera into base trims and into vans and trucks that once went without.

Light-vehicle production and the electric shift add 1.6 points. The International Organization of Motor Vehicle Manufacturers (OICA) [counted 67.67 million passenger cars built in 2024](https://oica.net/wp-content/uploads/Passenger-Cars-2024.pdf), with China at 27.48 million, up 5%. Electric cars carry more parking content, because their software platforms make remote parking an over-the-air (OTA) upgrade rather than a hardware option. Each additional percentage point of production growth lifts parking set volume almost one for one. Douglas Insights calculates that an electric car built in China carries a parking set worth about USD 236, roughly 40% above the global average, because 12 sensors and 4 cameras are the norm rather than the exception.

Supply also helps. Bosch [presented the TB193 and TB293 ultrasonic chipsets on 24 April 2026](https://www.bosch-presse.de/pressportal/de/en/bosch-presents-ultrasonic-chipsets-for-ai-based-applications-in-the-automotive-industry-282560.html), selling the integrated circuits on their own for the first time and promising up to 50% lower energy use. Cheaper, data-rich ultrasonic chips let AI-based parking software see curbs and parked cars in raw echo data, which keeps the sensor relevant in automated parking systems.

## Which headwinds hold ultrasonic sensor volumes and parking prices down?

Three headwinds remove 1.3 points from automotive parking system volume growth each year: camera-only sensing that deletes ultrasonic transducers, weaker production in Europe and Japan, and repair costs that push some buyers to skip options. Each is measurable today in public production, regulation or supplier data.

Camera and radar substitution removes 0.6 points. Continental's Radar Vision Parking combines surround-view cameras with surround radar into a 360-degree sensor system and, in Continental's own words, could replace ultrasonic sensors. Each deleted set of 12 transducers takes roughly USD 70 to USD 110 out of the ultrasonic segment, although part of that value returns as camera and software content.

Production weakness removes 0.4 points. OICA's [2024 passenger car tables](https://oica.net/wp-content/uploads/Passenger-Cars-2024.pdf) show Europe down 4% to 14.76 million units and Japan down 8% to 7.14 million, two regions with high parking sensor fitment. Fewer cars built in high-fitment plants mean fewer sets, whatever the fitment rate.

Repair and calibration cost removes 0.3 points. A parking camera or sensor behind a bumper turns a minor scrape into a sensor replacement and recalibration, and price-sensitive buyers in Latin America and India often choose trims without the full set. Douglas Insights estimates that 9 in 100 buyers offered a paid parking package decline it on cost.

## Which suppliers win the parking-sensor and park-assist software contracts?

Valeo, Bosch and Continental together hold 37.3% of automotive parking system revenue, Douglas Insights estimates, built on decades of ultrasonic sensor supply and camera programmes. Valeo leads with about 15.8%, and Chinese in-house suppliers gain share fastest as BYD and its peers build their own parking stacks.

| Company | Estimated share 2025 | Position built on |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Valeo | 15.8% | Ultrasonic sensors since 1991, Park4U automated parking |
| Bosch | 13.1% | Ultrasonic sensors and chipsets, Intelligent Park Pilot infrastructure |
| Continental | 8.4% | Surround view, radar fusion, parking ECUs |
| Aisin with Denso | 6.9% | Intelligent Parking Assist for Toyota, Denso ultrasonic sensors |
| Magna | 5.2% | 3D surround-view cameras and domain controllers |

Valeo describes itself as the worldwide market leader in parking assistance and parking automation. Its Park4U system scans the side of the road with ultrasonic sensors, measures the gap and parks the car; the remote version, launched in 2016, lets the driver steer by smartphone from outside.

Bosch holds about 13.1% through ultrasonic sensors and now chips. Its [24 April 2026 chipset launch](https://www.bosch-presse.de/pressportal/de/en/bosch-presents-ultrasonic-chipsets-for-ai-based-applications-in-the-automotive-industry-282560.html) opens a second revenue line: other sensor makers can buy Bosch silicon through the open VASI bus interface. Bosch also supplied the garage sensors for driverless parking with Mercedes-Benz, which Germany's Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) [approved for commercial use on 30 November 2022](https://group.mercedes-benz.com/innovation/product-innovation/autonomous-driving/intelligent-park-pilot.html) at Stuttgart Airport as a Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) Level 4 function.

Continental's 8.4% rests on surround-view cameras and fusion software. Aisin, with Denso supplying the front ultrasonic sensors, launched Intelligent Parking Assist with Toyota in November 2019, which anchors a 6.9% combined share. Magna, whose [driver assistance systems sit on more than 250 vehicle models](https://www.magna.com/company/newsroom/releases/release/2021/02/25/news-release---magna-to-deliver-3d-surround-view-with-next-gen-cameras-and-electronic-control-units), earns about 5.2% from 3D surround-view cameras and controllers. BYD builds much of its parking stack in house, which is why Douglas Insights reckons Chinese in-house and local suppliers already hold 21.4% and gain about 1.1 points a year.

## Where are parking cameras and sensors fitted fastest, China or Europe?

Asia Pacific leads the automotive parking system with USD 5.56 billion, a 46.2% share in 2025, and also grows fastest at 10.2% a year. China's electric car makers drive both, fitting automated parking on mid-priced models that Europe sells without it.

Asia Pacific reaches USD 14.68 billion by 2035; China's 27.48 million passenger cars in 2024 give it scale no other country matches. Europe holds USD 3.09 billion, or 25.7%, growing 7.9% to USD 6.61 billion, with the highest ultrasonic fitment of any region at 88% of new light vehicles. North America accounts for USD 2.45 billion and 20.4%, rising 8.3% a year to USD 5.45 billion as pickups add surround-view cameras for trailer and parking views.

Latin America contributes USD 553.3 million at a 4.6% share, growing 8.9% to USD 1.30 billion as Brazilian and Mexican plants fit rear sensors on export models. The Middle East and Africa is the wildcard: USD 372.9 million in 2025, but 9.71% a year to USD 942.2 million, because Gulf buyers take large SUVs with full camera sets and OICA counted African car output up 10% in 2024.

## Which reversing-detection regulations force a parking system onto every new car?

Two regulations carry most of the automotive parking system floor: the EU General Safety Regulation, applied from 6 July 2022, and US FMVSS 111, fully in force from 1 May 2018. Together they cover about 30% of world light-vehicle production in our count.

The EU text, [Regulation (EU) 2019/2144](https://eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-content/EN/TXT/HTML/?uri=CELEX:32019R2144), adopted on 27 November 2019, defines reversing detection as a system to make the driver aware of people and objects at the rear of the vehicle with the primary aim of avoiding collisions when reversing. It is technology-neutral, so a carmaker can comply with 4 ultrasonic sensors, a camera or both, which keeps both parking segments growing in Europe.

The US rule is narrower and stricter. The [NHTSA rear visibility rule](https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2014/04/07/2014-07469/federal-motor-vehicle-safety-standards-rear-visibility) requires a rear image for vehicles under 10,000 pounds and cites about 210 deaths and 15,000 injuries a year from backover crashes, with children under 5 making up 31% of the deaths. Neither rule requires automated parking, so the 16.2% software segment grows on consumer demand, not law.

## What does automated valet parking change for the automotive parking system business?

Automated valet parking shifts about 4% of automotive parking system value from the car to the garage by 2035, Douglas Insights projects, because sensors in the building do part of the work. The Mercedes-Benz and Bosch approval at Stuttgart showed the model works.

In the [Intelligent Park Pilot](https://group.mercedes-benz.com/innovation/product-innovation/autonomous-driving/intelligent-park-pilot.html) the driver leaves the car at a drop-off zone and sends it by app to a pre-booked bay; infrastructure sensors guide it up ramps and brake it if something appears. Bosch has said it wants to equip several hundred parking garages with such infrastructure. For the automotive parking system supplier, the car still needs connectivity and a steering-capable park-assist controller, so in-vehicle content stays near USD 480 per car for those models.

## What if camera-only parking replaces ultrasonic sensors faster than the 2035 base case assumes?

If camera-only sensing spreads faster, the automotive parking system reaches USD 23.44 billion by 2035 in our slower case, against the USD 28.98 billion base. A faster case, with automated parking standard across Asia and Europe catching up, reaches USD 34.74 billion.

| Case | Volume growth | Price growth | Revenue CAGR | 2035 value |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Slower | 2.2% | 4.6% | 6.90% | USD 23.44 billion |
| Base case | 3.4% | 5.6% | 9.19% | USD 28.98 billion |
| Faster | 4.5% | 6.4% | 11.19% | USD 34.74 billion |

The slower case assumes ultrasonic sets disappear from a third of new electric cars by 2030 and Europe's output stays flat. The faster case assumes BYD-style liability offers spread and remote parking becomes standard on most Chinese and Korean models. Adding one point to annual volume growth adds about USD 2.93 billion to the 2035 automotive parking system value.

Published forecasts for park-assist systems run from about 14.2% to 24.9% a year. Our 9.19% sits well below them because we count realised set prices, not list prices, and net out sensors deleted by camera-only designs. The Bosch chipset launch of 24 April 2026 points the other way: cheaper ultrasonic silicon supports the base case.

## Douglas Exclusive: the park-assist fitment tracker

The park-assist fitment tracker is a Douglas Insights model built from 31 inputs: 25 modelled fitment cells and 6 sourced anchors. The anchors are OICA production, the NHTSA cost range and compliance date, the EU application date, Magna's model count and BYD's vehicle count. It tracks what share of new light vehicles carries each automotive parking system layer.

| Region | Ultrasonic sensors | Rear-view camera | Surround view | Automated parking 2025 | Automated parking 2035 |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Asia Pacific | 71% | 78% | 34% | 17% | 52% |
| Europe | 88% | 74% | 29% | 14% | 41% |
| North America | 76% | 99% | 31% | 12% | 38% |
| Latin America | 46% | 52% | 8% | 3% | 15% |
| Middle East and Africa | 49% | 58% | 11% | 4% | 19% |

The tracker's finding is that automated parking triples in Asia Pacific, from 17% to 52% of new vehicles, while ultrasonic fitment barely moves anywhere. That gap is why the software segment grows 16.2% and the sensor segment 3.5%. North America already fits a rear camera on 99% of new vehicles, so its growth must come from surround view, now at 31%.

## Which methodology turns 71.6 million parking sets into a market value?

The methodology multiplies 71.6 million parking sets by a USD 168 realised average to give USD 12.03 billion for the automotive parking system in 2025. Sets come from production times fitment in 5 regions and 4 layers; prices come from realised bands.

Volume starts from OICA's 67.67 million passenger cars in 2024, adds light commercial vehicles and 2025 growth, and applies the 20 fitment cells in the tracker. Aftermarket kits add 5.6 million sets. Prices use 5 bands per region, cross-checked against the NHTSA USD 132 to USD 142 camera system cost, which agrees with our rear-camera band to within 4%. We counted 23 countries individually and modelled the rest by region. Supplier revenues were cross-checked against our share table: the top five add up to 49.4%, consistent with Chinese in-house supply and the long tail.

For 2035, 71.6 million sets growing 3.4% a year reach 100.0 million, and USD 168 growing 5.6% reaches USD 289.70; 100.0 million x USD 289.70 = USD 28.98 billion. Regional rows and segment rows both reconcile to the global total within 1%.
