- The Gearbox Value Ledger shows value per vehicle rising from about USD 1,254 to USD 1,331 by 2035 because hybrids offset battery electric substitution.

World factories built 96.4 million motor vehicles in 2025, up 3.9% from 92.7 million in 2024, the International Organization of Motor Vehicle Manufacturers (OICA) [reported on 23 April 2026](https://oica.net/auto-industry-growth-shifted-east-in-2025-amid-global-repositioning/), and almost every one of them left the line with a transmission or reduction gearbox. The automotive transmission market covers the gearboxes fitted to new light and commercial vehicles: planetary automatics, continuously variable transmissions (CVT), dual-clutch transmissions (DCT), manuals, dedicated hybrid transmissions (DHT), electric vehicle reduction gearboxes and medium and heavy truck and bus transmissions. Douglas Insights sizes it at USD 120.85 billion in 2025, about 96.4 million units at an average USD 1,254, rising to USD 123.40 billion in 2026 and USD 148.90 billion in 2035, a 2.11% compound annual growth rate (CAGR). The study sits beside our [Vehicle Powertrain Sensor Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/vehicle-powertrain-sensor-market/), [Automotive Tubing Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/automotive-tubing-market/) and [Electric Vehicles Polymers Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/electric-vehicles-polymers-market/) reports, and every figure follows the Douglas Insights [research methodology](https://www.douglasinsights.com/research-methodology/).

## Which automotive transmission type earns the most: planetary automatics, hybrid transmissions or manuals?

Planetary automatic transmissions earn the most, 31.8% of 2025 value or about USD 38.40 billion, Douglas Insights estimates. Dedicated hybrid transmissions and electric vehicle reduction gearboxes grow fastest, each at 6.0% a year to 2035.

| Transmission type | Units 2025 | Value 2025 | Share 2025 | CAGR 2025-2035 | Value 2035 |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Planetary automatic transmissions | 24.0 million | USD 38.40 billion | 31.8% | 0.6% | USD 40.77 billion |
| Dedicated hybrid transmissions | 11.4 million | USD 19.95 billion | 16.5% | 6.0% | USD 35.73 billion |
| Continuously variable transmissions | 13.0 million | USD 14.95 billion | 12.4% | -0.5% | USD 14.22 billion |
| Medium and heavy commercial vehicle transmissions | 3.5 million | USD 14.70 billion | 12.2% | 3.0% | USD 19.76 billion |
| Dual-clutch transmissions | 8.5 million | USD 12.33 billion | 10.2% | 1.0% | USD 13.61 billion |
| Manual transmissions | 21.5 million | USD 11.83 billion | 9.8% | -2.5% | USD 9.18 billion |
| Electric vehicle reduction gearboxes | 14.5 million | USD 8.70 billion | 7.2% | 6.0% | USD 15.58 billion |

Planetary automatics lead because North American pickups and sport utility vehicles, German premium cars and Japanese and Korean exports still use six- to ten-speed units that sell for about USD 1,600 each, a Douglas Insights estimate. Their value grows only 0.6% a year to USD 40.77 billion by 2035, because many future programmes switch to hybrid versions of the same gearbox, which we count as dedicated hybrid transmissions once a traction motor sits inside the case. ZF and BMW signed a multi-billion-euro agreement on 6 February 2026 to keep supplying and developing the 8HP eight-speed automatic, focused on electrified drives, into the late 2030s, [ZF's release](https://press.zf.com/press/en/releases/release_99008.html) states, which shows how long a good automatic platform lives.

Dedicated hybrid transmissions, USD 19.95 billion in 2025, grow 6.0% a year to USD 35.73 billion as full and plug-in hybrids win share in Europe, Japan, China and the United States. Electric vehicle reduction gearboxes grow at the same 6.0% but from a low price of about USD 600 a unit, so 14.5 million units earn only USD 8.70 billion. Manuals, 21.5 million units at about USD 550, fall 2.5% a year to USD 9.18 billion as India, Southeast Asia and Latin America shift to automatics. CVTs slip 0.5% a year and DCTs grow 1.0%. Type values for 2035 sum to USD 148.84 billion, 0.04% below the headline.

## How does automotive transmission demand split between light vehicles and trucks, and between new and electrified powertrains?

Light vehicles take about 87.8% of 2025 automotive transmission value, roughly USD 106.15 billion; medium and heavy trucks and buses take 12.2%, about USD 14.70 billion, Douglas Insights estimates.

By powertrain, combustion-only vehicles still take about 73.1% of 2025 units, hybrids about 11.8% and battery electric vehicles about 15.0%, all Douglas Insights estimates built from the type table above. Electric car sales exceeded 20 million in 2025, up 20%, and reached 25% of new car sales, the International Energy Agency (IEA) [Global EV Outlook 2026 of 20 May 2026](https://www.iea.org/reports/global-ev-outlook-2026/executive-summary) shows; that total includes plug-in hybrids, which carry a multi-speed or hybrid gearbox, so the shift costs the transmission industry value only where a battery electric car replaces a combustion car.

Commercial vehicles weigh more in value than in units. A medium or heavy truck or bus automatic or automated manual sells for about USD 4,200, more than three times the light-vehicle average, so 3.5 million units earn 12.2% of value from 3.6% of units, a Douglas Insights estimate. Off-highway, defence and specialty drive systems are counted only where they are fitted to road-registered trucks and buses, which keeps Allison's newly acquired off-highway axles and drives outside the base.

## What drives automotive transmission revenue: hybrid growth, Asian vehicle output or heavier gearboxes?

Revenue rises 2.11% a year in our base case: units add 1.50% and price per unit 0.60%. Four drivers add 2.40 gross points to unit growth before 0.90 points of restraints, Douglas Insights estimates.

### Hybrid boom lifts value per vehicle: 0.80 points

Hybrids are the largest driver because a dedicated hybrid transmission costs about 9% more than the planetary automatic it replaces, a Douglas Insights estimate. Full hybrids took 34.5% of European Union car registrations in 2025, 3,733,325 cars, against 17.4% for battery electric cars and 9.4% for plug-in hybrids, the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA) [reported on 27 January 2026](https://www.acea.auto/pc-registrations/new-car-registrations-1-8-in-2025-battery-electric-17-4-market-share/). Aisin, the largest independent supplier, sold 10.19 million powertrain units in the year to 31 March 2026, up 0.5%, while its hybrid and eAxle units rose 16.4% to 2.69 million, its [results presentation of 28 April 2026](https://www.aisin.com/en/investors/latest/uploads/fy2026_q4_presentation-f-e_2.pdf) shows, and it forecasts 3.75 million electrification units for the year to March 2027, about 39% more.

### Asian vehicle output: 0.90 points

Asian factories add 0.90 points. Asia Pacific production rose about 7.6% to roughly 59.2 million vehicles in 2025, while Europe fell 0.8% to 17.2 million and the Americas fell 2.1% to 18.74 million, OICA's [2025 statistics](https://oica.net/auto-industry-growth-shifted-east-in-2025-amid-global-repositioning/) show. China built 34.53 million vehicles and India 6.49 million. Chinese exports reached 8.205 million vehicles in the nine months to September 2026, more than 4 million of them new energy vehicles, the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) figures [reported on 12 October 2026](https://www.chinadailyhk.com/article/640957) show, so Chinese gearbox plants now supply cars sold in Europe, Latin America, the Middle East and Southeast Asia.

### Trucks, buses and defence vehicles: 0.40 points

Commercial vehicles add 0.40 points and, at USD 4,200 a unit, much more value per point. Allison Transmission's net sales rose 121% to USD 1.53 billion in the third quarter of 2026, including USD 653 million from its new off-highway business, and its core transmission segment reached a record USD 881 million, up 27%, with record North America on-highway sales of USD 462 million, its [results of 2 November 2026](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/0001411207/000119312526443664/d187329dex991.htm) state. The company raised its 2026 net sales guidance to USD 5.98 billion to USD 6.08 billion.

### More gears and electrified automatics: 0.30 points

Upgrades from manuals to automatics in India, Brazil and Southeast Asia add the last 0.30 points, as each shift replaces a USD 550 manual with a CVT, DCT or automatic costing two to three times more, a Douglas Insights estimate. Summed, 0.80 + 0.90 + 0.40 + 0.30 = 2.40 points; after 0.90 points of restraints the unit leg is 1.50%, and 1.015 x 1.006 gives the 2.11% revenue rate.

## What holds back automotive transmission revenue: single-speed electric cars, weak European output or supplier write-downs?

Three restraints remove 0.90 points a year: battery electric cars that need only a single-speed gearbox take 0.50 points, flat European and Chinese domestic demand 0.30 points and supplier retrenchment 0.10 points, Douglas Insights estimates.

Battery electric substitution is the sharpest brake. New energy vehicles reached 53.6% of Chinese sales in the nine months to September 2026, 12.472 million vehicles, and a record 61.6% in September, CAAM data [reported on 12 October 2026](https://www.chinadailyhk.com/article/640957) show. Each battery electric car that replaces a combustion car swaps a USD 1,150 to USD 1,600 gearbox for a USD 600 reduction unit, a Douglas Insights estimate. The IEA [outlook slides of 20 May 2026](https://iea.blob.core.windows.net/assets/beae65ce-6b6d-4a8b-b67a-c591093756be/GEVO2026_LaunchWebinarSlides.pdf) put electric cars at 46% to 53% of global car sales by 2035 across its two main scenarios.

Flat demand takes 0.30 points. Total Chinese vehicle sales were 23.271 million in the nine months to September 2026, slightly down on a year earlier, despite record exports, the same [CAAM release](https://www.chinadailyhk.com/article/640957) shows, and European output fell 0.8% in 2025, OICA states. Supplier retrenchment takes 0.10 points: ZF reported a 2025 net loss of EUR 2.15 billion on sales of EUR 38.8 billion, mainly from a one-off charge of about EUR 1.6 billion for ending e-mobility projects early, its [results of 19 March 2026](https://press.zf.com/press/en/releases/release_100672.html) show, and Schaeffler's Powertrain and Chassis division revenue fell 5.2% to EUR 8.90 billion in 2025, its [results of 3 March 2026](https://www.mynewsdesk.com/fi/schaeffler/pressreleases/schaeffler-reports-solid-results-for-2025-3435255) state.

## Which region buys the most automotive transmissions: Asia Pacific, North America or Europe?

Asia Pacific buys the most automotive transmissions, about USD 66.47 billion or 55.0% of 2025 value. The Middle East and Africa grows fastest, at 3.6% a year to USD 3.44 billion by 2035.

| Region | Value 2025 | Share 2025 | Value 2026 | CAGR 2025-2035 | Value 2035 |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Asia Pacific | USD 66.47 billion | 55.0% | USD 68.20 billion | 2.6% | USD 85.92 billion |
| North America | USD 24.17 billion | 20.0% | USD 24.56 billion | 1.6% | USD 28.33 billion |
| Europe | USD 22.96 billion | 19.0% | USD 23.19 billion | 1.0% | USD 25.36 billion |
| Latin America | USD 4.83 billion | 4.0% | USD 4.95 billion | 2.4% | USD 6.13 billion |
| Middle East and Africa | USD 2.42 billion | 2.0% | USD 2.50 billion | 3.6% | USD 3.44 billion |

Asia Pacific leads because it builds about 61% of the world's vehicles: China 34.53 million, Japan 8.41 million and India 6.49 million in 2025, OICA's [2025 statistics](https://oica.net/auto-industry-growth-shifted-east-in-2025-amid-global-repositioning/) show. Its 55.0% value share sits below its unit share because Chinese battery electric cars and Indian manuals carry cheap gearboxes. Regional value grows 2.6% a year to USD 85.92 billion, led by Indian automatics and Chinese hybrid and plug-in transmissions.

North America, USD 24.17 billion, earns 20.0% of value from about 16% of output, a Douglas Insights estimate, because pickups, sport utility vehicles and Class 4 to 8 trucks carry ten-speed automatics and heavy-duty units. The United States built 10.24 million vehicles in 2025, OICA states. It grows 1.6% a year as federal rollbacks of vehicle greenhouse gas rules slow battery electric adoption. Europe, USD 22.96 billion, grows only 1.0% a year to USD 25.36 billion because output is flat and battery electric cars take a rising share. Latin America, USD 4.83 billion, grows 2.4% as Brazil and Mexico shift from manuals, and the Middle East and Africa, USD 2.42 billion, grows 3.6% from a small base of local assembly. Regional values sum to USD 149.18 billion in 2035, 0.19% above the headline.

## Which companies lead the automotive transmission market, and how concentrated is supply?

Aisin leads automotive transmission supply with about 13.5% of 2025 value, a Douglas Insights estimate, ahead of ZF at about 8.0% and JATCO at about 5.0%. Carmakers' own gearbox plants hold about 45%.

| Company | Base and focus | Latest filed figure | Estimated share 2025 |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Aisin | Kariya, Japan; automatics, CVTs, hybrid units, eAxles | Revenue JPY 5,117.7 billion, year to 31 March 2026 | 13.5% |
| ZF Friedrichshafen | Friedrichshafen, Germany; 8HP automatic, truck AMTs | Sales EUR 38.8 billion, 2025 | 8.0% |
| JATCO | Fuji, Japan; CVTs for Nissan and others | No separate public filing | 5.0% |
| Allison Transmission | Indianapolis, United States; truck, bus and defence automatics | Net sales USD 1.53 billion, third quarter 2026 | 2.8% |
| Magna International | Aurora, Canada; DCTs, hybrid units, e-drives | Power and Vision sales USD 3.77 billion, third quarter 2026 | 2.5% |
| BorgWarner | Auburn Hills, United States; clutch modules, e-drive gearing | Net sales USD 3.49 billion, third quarter 2026 | 1.5% |

Aisin's revenue rose 4.5% to JPY 5,117.7 billion, about USD 34 billion, and operating profit rose 12.7% to JPY 228.7 billion in the year to 31 March 2026, its [results presentation](https://www.aisin.com/en/investors/latest/uploads/fy2026_q4_presentation-f-e_2.pdf) shows; at about USD 1,600 a unit its 10.19 million powertrain units equal about USD 16.3 billion, the basis of our 13.5% share. ZF's adjusted operating margin rose to 4.5% in 2025 on EUR 1.75 billion of adjusted EBIT, and it is restructuring its electrified powertrain division while keeping it in the group, its [results release](https://press.zf.com/press/en/releases/release_100672.html) states.

Magna's Power and Vision segment sold USD 3.77 billion in the third quarter of 2026 and the company expects USD 15.4 billion to USD 15.6 billion for the full year, its [results of 30 October 2026](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/0000749098/000110465926120352/tm2628312d1_ex99-1.htm) show. BorgWarner's PowerDrive Systems sales rose to USD 699 million from USD 576 million in the third quarter of 2026, its [quarterly report](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/0000908255/000090825526000062/bwa-20260930.htm) shows. Hyundai Transys, Schaeffler, Eaton Cummins and Chinese suppliers such as Wanliyang share the remainder with in-house plants at Toyota, Volkswagen, Stellantis, General Motors, Ford, BYD and Geely.

## How much does an automotive transmission cost, and why does the average price keep rising?

An automotive transmission sells to carmakers for an average USD 1,254 in 2025, Douglas Insights estimates, from about USD 550 for a manual to USD 4,200 for a truck unit, rising 0.60% a year to USD 1,331 by 2035.

Prices sit in clear bands, all Douglas Insights estimates: about USD 600 for an electric vehicle reduction gearbox, USD 1,150 for a CVT, USD 1,450 for a DCT, USD 1,600 for a planetary automatic and USD 1,750 for a dedicated hybrid transmission. The hybrid premium pays for the clutch packs, power electronics interfaces and cooling that a motor inside the case requires. Mix sets the average: each point of share that moves from manuals to hybrids lifts the average by about USD 12, while each point that moves from automatics to reduction gearboxes cuts it by about USD 10.

Contract pricing follows the usual supplier pattern: annual price-downs of 1% to 3% on running parts, offset by raw-material clauses for steel and aluminium and by new programmes priced higher, a Douglas Insights estimate. Aisin's 12.7% operating profit gain on 4.5% more revenue in the year to March 2026, shown in its [results](https://www.aisin.com/en/investors/latest/uploads/fy2026_q4_presentation-f-e_2.pdf), suggests suppliers recovered cost inflation from carmakers. Our 0.60% price leg comes mostly from mix, not from list increases.

## What if electric cars spread faster or hybrids win: how large is the automotive transmission market in 2035?

The automotive transmission market ends 2035 between USD 127.03 billion and USD 167.58 billion across three cases, around a USD 148.90 billion base. Unit growth and hybrid mix set most of the spread.

| Case | Unit leg | Price leg | Revenue rate | 2035 value |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Slower | 0.50% | 0.00% | 0.50% | USD 127.03 billion |
| Base case | 1.50% | 0.60% | 2.11% | USD 148.90 billion |
| Faster | 2.30% | 1.00% | 3.32% | USD 167.58 billion |

In the slower case battery electric cars reach the IEA's higher 53% share well before 2035, Chinese domestic sales stay flat and Europe's output keeps shrinking, cutting the unit leg by 1.00 point and erasing the price leg as reduction gearboxes dilute the average. In the faster case hybrids take most of the growth, India and Southeast Asia add about 4 million vehicles of annual output by 2035 and truck makers keep buying heavy-duty automatics, adding 0.80 points to units and 0.40 points to price. One extra point of yearly revenue growth adds about USD 15.2 billion to 2035 value, Douglas Insights estimates.

Live signals favour the base case. Aisin's forecast of 10.70 million powertrain units for the year to March 2027, up 5.0%, and Allison's raised 2026 guidance point to steady demand, while Magna's 2026 assumptions of 15.0 million light vehicles in North America, 16.8 million in Europe and 30.4 million in China, in its [October 2026 outlook](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/0000749098/000110465926120352/tm2628312d1_ex99-1.htm), imply no rebound in Western output.

## Which rules shape automotive transmission demand, from EU CO2 targets to US rollbacks?

Three rule sets shape automotive transmission demand: EU carbon dioxide targets for cars, eased by three-year averaging under Regulation (EU) [2025/1214](https://eur-lex.europa.eu/eli/reg/2025/1214/oj/eng/pdf); Euro 7 pollutant limits; and US federal rollbacks of vehicle greenhouse gas and fuel economy rules.

The EU layer moved twice. Regulation (EU) 2025/1214, adopted on 17 June 2025 and in force from 9 July 2025, lets carmakers meet their 2025 to 2027 carbon dioxide targets on a three-year average instead of each year, [EUR-Lex](https://eur-lex.europa.eu/eli/reg/2025/1214/oj/eng/pdf) shows, which keeps more hybrids in the mix. On 17 December 2025 the European Commission proposed cutting the 2035 car target from a 100% to a 90% reduction against 2021, with the rest offset by low-carbon steel or renewable fuels, [DieselNet reported](https://dieselnet.com/news/2025/12eu.php); if adopted, plug-in hybrids and range extenders with multi-speed gearboxes could still be sold after 2035. Euro 7, Regulation (EU) 2024/1257, applies to new car and van types from 29 November 2026 and to all new cars and vans from 29 November 2027, the [European Parliament's legislative observatory](https://oeil.europarl.europa.eu/oeil/en/document-summary?id=1784743) records.

The US layer moved the other way. The Environmental Protection Agency finalised the rescission of the 2009 greenhouse gas endangerment finding and all vehicle greenhouse gas standards on 12 February 2026, its [fact sheet](https://www.epa.gov/system/files/documents/2026-02/420f26001.pdf) states, and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's SAFE Vehicles Rule III, published on 30 September 2026 and effective 30 November 2026, resets fuel economy standards for model years 2022 to 2031, the [Department of Transportation](https://www.transportation.gov/regulations/federal-register-documents/2026-19964) notes. Both favour ten-speed automatics and hybrids over battery electric cars in the United States.

## Douglas Exclusive: the Gearbox Value Ledger

The Gearbox Value Ledger is a Douglas Insights model built from 12 inputs: 2 industry association datasets, 1 agency outlook, 6 company filings and 3 regulatory documents. It tracks how much gearbox value each new vehicle carries as powertrains change.

| Date | Input | What it moves |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 9 July 2025 | EUR-Lex: Regulation 2025/1214 in force | EU hybrid mix |
| 27 January 2026 | ACEA: EU hybrids 34.5% of 2025 registrations | EU hybrid mix |
| 6 February 2026 | ZF and BMW: 8HP agreement to late 2030s | Automatic life |
| 12 February 2026 | EPA: vehicle greenhouse gas standards rescinded | US mix |
| 3 March 2026 | Schaeffler: Powertrain and Chassis down 5.2% | Supplier capacity |
| 19 March 2026 | ZF: EUR 1.6 billion e-mobility charge | Supplier capacity |
| 23 April 2026 | OICA: 96.4 million vehicles in 2025 | Unit base |
| 28 April 2026 | Aisin: hybrid and eAxle units up 16.4% | Hybrid mix |
| 20 May 2026 | IEA: electric cars 25% of 2025 sales | Battery electric share |
| 30 September 2026 | NHTSA: SAFE Vehicles Rule III published | US mix |
| 12 October 2026 | CAAM: new energy vehicles 53.6% of sales | China mix |
| 2 November 2026 | Allison: record transmission segment sales | Truck units |

The finding, a Douglas Insights estimate: gearbox value per vehicle was about USD 1,254 in 2025 and drifts to about USD 1,331 by 2035, even though battery electric cars rise from about 15% to about 23% of units. Hybrids explain the gap. Every hybrid that replaces a light combustion car adds about USD 590 of gearbox value, from an average USD 1,157 to USD 1,750, while every battery electric car removes about USD 560, so hybrid conversions must at least match battery electric conversions one for one to keep value per vehicle rising.

That ratio is close in Europe, where hybrids took 34.5% of 2025 registrations against 17.4% battery electric, and in the United States after the 2026 rollbacks, but weaker in China, where new energy vehicles, many of them battery electric, passed 61.6% of September 2026 sales. That is why Douglas Insights expects Chinese gearbox value per vehicle to fall about 1% a year while Western value per vehicle rises about 1%, and why independent suppliers with hybrid platforms, rather than single-speed reducers, earn the widest margins.

## How does the methodology turn 96.4 million units into USD 120.85 billion?

Our methodology multiplies 96.4 million transmissions by an average USD 1,254 to reach USD 120.85 billion in 2025, then grows units 1.50% and price 0.60% a year to 2035.

The model covers 7 transmission types, 2 vehicle classes, 3 powertrain groups and 5 regions, using 84 data points, 26 sourced and 58 modelled. Units start from OICA production of 96.4 million vehicles, split by type using Aisin, ZF, Allison and CAAM figures, IEA electric car shares and ACEA registrations; type prices are Douglas Insights estimates checked against supplier revenue per unit. Arithmetic: 96.4 million x USD 1,254 = USD 120.85 billion; 2026: USD 120.85 billion x 1.02109 = USD 123.40 billion; 2035: USD 120.85 billion x 1.02109^10 = USD 148.90 billion.

Two cross-checks agree. First, Aisin's 10.19 million powertrain units at about USD 1,600 equal about USD 16.3 billion, roughly 48% of its JPY 5,117.7 billion revenue, consistent with its mix of gearboxes, brakes and body parts. Second, Allison's USD 881 million quarterly transmission sales imply about USD 3.4 billion a year, or 23% of our USD 14.70 billion truck and bus segment, in line with its dominant share of North American medium-duty automatics. AI tools help draft the text and automated checks test the arithmetic and links; the Douglas Insights research desk chooses the sources, builds the model and approves publication, as our [editorial standards](https://www.douglasinsights.com/research-methodology/) explain.

## What counts in the automotive transmission study, and what is excluded?

The study counts new transmissions and reduction gearboxes fitted by vehicle makers to cars, vans, trucks and buses, valued at the carmaker's purchase price. Aftermarket and remanufactured units, motors, inverters, axles and off-highway drives are excluded.

The study splits value by 7 transmission types, 2 vehicle classes, 3 powertrain groups (combustion, hybrid and battery electric) and 5 regions: Asia Pacific, North America, Europe, Latin America, and the Middle East and Africa.
