## Key takeaways

- The B2B payment market is worth USD 250 billion in 2025 and USD 420 billion in 2035, a 5.32% CAGR.
- About USD 125 trillion of business payment flows at an average 0.200% revenue yield form the 2025 base; flows grow 5.0% a year and yield 0.3%.
- Bank transfers hold 40.0% of revenue, but AP and AR automation platforms grow 10.0% a year to USD 51.9 billion by 2035.
- American Express Commercial Services billed USD 140.7 billion in the third quarter of 2026, up 3%, and earned USD 4.55 billion of revenue.
- The B2B Yield Ladder shows that moving 1% of world B2B flows from bank transfer to card adds about USD 24.8 billion of revenue.

American Express customers charged USD 140.7 billion on its commercial cards in the third quarter of 2026, up 3%, and its Commercial Services segment earned USD 4.55 billion of revenue net of interest expense, up 6%, its [10-Q for the quarter](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/0000004962/000000496226000409/axp-20260930.htm) shows. The B2B payment market covers the revenue that banks, card networks and payment platforms earn when one business pays another: bank transfers and wires, commercial and virtual cards, cross-border business payments with currency conversion, accounts payable and receivable automation, and cheques. Douglas Insights sizes it at USD 250 billion in 2025, about USD 125 trillion of business payment flows at an average revenue yield of 0.200%, and at USD 420 billion in 2035, a 5.32% compound annual growth rate (CAGR). The study sits beside our [Payment as a Service Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/payment-as-a-service-market/), [Virtual Cards Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/virtual-cards-market/) and [B2B Fuel Cards Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/b2b-fuel-cards-market/) reports; every figure follows the Douglas Insights [research methodology](https://www.douglasinsights.com/research-methodology/).

## Which B2B payment method earns the most: bank transfers, commercial cards, cross-border or AP automation?

Bank transfers and treasury payments earn the most, 40.0% of 2025 B2B payment revenue or USD 100 billion, Douglas Insights estimates. AP and AR automation platforms grow fastest, 10.0% a year to USD 51.9 billion by 2035.

| Payment method | Share 2025 | Value 2025 | CAGR 2026-2035 | Value 2035 |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Bank transfers and treasury (ACH, wires, instant rails) | 40.0% | USD 100 billion | 4.0% | USD 148 billion |
| Commercial, corporate and virtual cards | 30.0% | USD 75.0 billion | 5.8% | USD 132 billion |
| Cross-border B2B payments and FX | 18.0% | USD 45.0 billion | 6.0% | USD 80.6 billion |
| AP and AR automation and embedded platforms | 8.0% | USD 20.0 billion | 10.0% | USD 51.9 billion |
| Cheques and other paper | 4.0% | USD 10.0 billion | -6.0% | USD 5.39 billion |

Bank transfers lead because most business-to-business value still moves account to account, and banks earn on it through transaction fees, wire charges and the deposit balances that treasury clients leave behind. J.P. Morgan Payments, the largest such franchise, booked record 2025 revenue of USD 19.4 billion, up 5%, its [release of 13 January 2026](https://www.jpmorgan.com/payments/newsroom/payments-2025-q4-earnings) states. Douglas Insights estimates that bank-transfer revenue grows only 4.0% a year to USD 148 billion, because instant rails carry low per-item fees.

Commercial cards, USD 75.0 billion, grow 5.8% as suppliers accept virtual cards issued for a single invoice; card interchange makes this the highest-yield method per dollar moved. Cross-border payments and FX, USD 45.0 billion, grow 6.0% on currency spreads paid by importers and exporters. Automation platforms, USD 20.0 billion, grow fastest: BILL Holdings lifted fiscal 2026 revenue 13% to USD 1.65 billion with 479,300 businesses using its tools, its [results of 19 August 2026](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/0001786352/000162828026057932/bill-20260630xexx991.htm) show. Cheques, USD 10.0 billion, shrink 6.0% a year. Method values for 2035 sum to USD 418 billion, 0.46% below the headline.

## Which businesses pay through B2B payment channels: large corporates, mid-market firms or small businesses?

Large corporates pay the most, about 55% of 2025 B2B payment revenue or USD 138 billion, Douglas Insights estimates. Small businesses grow fastest as invoicing and supplier payments move from cheques to software and cards.

Large corporates lead because a multinational treasury moves billions of dollars a day across dozens of bank accounts and currencies, and buys cash management, liquidity and FX services in bundles. Douglas Insights estimates that firms with more than USD 1 billion of sales generate about 55% of revenue, mid-market firms about 27%, or USD 67.5 billion, and small businesses about 18%, or USD 45.0 billion. Mid-market revenue grows about 5.5% a year as these firms adopt virtual cards and automated payables. Large-corporate revenue grows more slowly, about 4.6% a year, because big treasuries already pay electronically and negotiate fees down each time they put their banking mandates out to tender, which Douglas Insights estimates happens every three to five years for most multinationals.

Small businesses grow fastest, about 7.5% a year in our model. BILL processed USD 98.2 billion of total payment volume in the quarter to 30 June 2026, up 14%, across 37.4 million transactions, also up 14%, its [fiscal 2026 release](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/0001786352/000162828026057932/bill-20260630xexx991.htm) shows. Payoneer's B2B volume rose 59% to USD 5.0 billion in the third quarter of 2026 and its B2B small business revenue rose 13% to USD 70 million, its [release of 5 November 2026](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/0001845815/000110465926123062/payo-ex99d1.htm) states. The three customer tiers sum to USD 250 billion in 2025, the headline.

## What drives B2B payment growth: trade and output, digital conversion, cross-border commerce or embedded finance?

B2B payment flows rise 5.0% a year in our base case, from about USD 125 trillion in 2025 to about USD 204 trillion in 2035. Four drivers add 6.20 points of gross growth; three restraints remove 1.20 points.

### Nominal output and trade: 3.50 points

Growth in nominal output and trade is the largest driver, worth 3.50 points. Business payments track invoices, and invoices track the value of goods and services traded between firms. Visa's own volume shows the pace: payments volume rose 9% in fiscal 2026 and net revenue rose 15% to USD 45.9 billion, its [results of 27 October 2026](https://s1.q4cdn.com/050606653/files/content_files/4Q26-Earnings-Release_vFINAL.pdf) show. Douglas Insights estimates that each point of world nominal output growth adds about 0.9 points to B2B flows.

### Conversion from paper to electronic: 1.20 points

Digital conversion adds 1.20 points. FedNow, the US instant payment service, settled 6,376,467 payments worth USD 370.86 billion in the third quarter of 2026, an average of USD 58,161 each, the [Federal Reserve's statistics](https://www.frbservices.org/resources/financial-services/fednow-service-resources/fednow-service-volume-value-statistics/) show, and more than 1,800 institutions were live by 15 July 2026, per [Fed360](https://www.frbservices.org/news/fed360/issues/071526/fednow-service-soaring-volume-three-years). That average ticket is a business payment, not a consumer one. Douglas Insights estimates that about 1.5% of flows move from cheques and manual processes to electronic channels each year.

### Cross-border commerce: 0.90 points

Cross-border business adds 0.90 points. Visa's cross-border volume rose 13% in fiscal 2026, per its [October 2026 release](https://s1.q4cdn.com/050606653/files/content_files/4Q26-Earnings-Release_vFINAL.pdf), and Mastercard's rose 11% in the third quarter, with net revenue up 14% to USD 9.81 billion, its [results of 29 October 2026](https://s25.q4cdn.com/479285134/files/content_files/3Q26-Mastercard-Earnings-Release.pdf) show. Corpay bought Alpha Group, a UK provider of cross-border FX and global accounts for businesses, for USD 2.4 billion, completing the deal on 5 November 2025, its [announcement](https://www.corpay.com/en-SG/corporate-newsroom/19481/corpay-completes-2-4-billion-cross-border-payments-acquisition) states.

### Embedded finance and automation: 0.60 points

Software-led payments add the last 0.60 points. TPG and Corpay completed their purchase of AvidXchange, an accounts payable automation company, at USD 10.00 a share, valuing it at about USD 2.2 billion, on 15 October 2025, [AvidXchange](https://www.avidxchange.com/press-releases/tpg-corpay-complete-acquisition-of-avidxchange) announced. Douglas Insights estimates that payables software brings about 0.6% of new flows into electronic channels each year. Summed, 3.50 + 1.20 + 0.90 + 0.60 = 6.20 points, a Douglas Insights estimate.

## What holds B2B payment volume back: tariffs, slower corporate spending or netting?

Three restraints remove 1.20 points a year from B2B payment flow growth: tariffs and trade fragmentation take 0.50 points, slower corporate card spending 0.30 points and intercompany netting 0.40 points.

Tariffs are the heaviest drag. US duties on imported automobiles and parts, set by the [proclamation of 26 March 2025](https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/2025/03/adjusting-imports-of-automobiles-and-autombile-parts-into-the-united-states/), are one of several measures that shorten supply chains: a part made in the same country is paid for once instead of crossing several borders as components. Douglas Insights estimates that trade fragmentation removes 0.50 points a year from flow growth.

Slower corporate spending takes 0.30 points. American Express Commercial Services billed business grew only 3% to USD 140.7 billion in the third quarter of 2026, against 8% for the whole company, its [10-Q](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/0000004962/000000496226000409/axp-20260930.htm) shows, as firms held back travel and discretionary purchases. Netting takes the last 0.40 points: treasury systems that offset what group companies owe each other before paying the difference cut the gross value that crosses banks, a Douglas Insights estimate.

## Which region earns the most B2B payment revenue, and where does it grow fastest?

North America earns the most B2B payment revenue, USD 85.0 billion or 34.0% of 2025 value, and the Middle East and Africa grow fastest, 7.0% a year from USD 10.0 billion to USD 19.7 billion by 2035.

| Region | Value 2025 | Share 2025 | Value 2026 | CAGR 2026-2035 | Value 2035 |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| North America | USD 85.0 billion | 34.0% | USD 88.9 billion | 4.6% | USD 133 billion |
| Asia Pacific | USD 77.5 billion | 31.0% | USD 82.6 billion | 6.6% | USD 147 billion |
| Europe | USD 62.5 billion | 25.0% | USD 65.3 billion | 4.4% | USD 96.1 billion |
| Latin America | USD 15.0 billion | 6.0% | USD 15.9 billion | 6.2% | USD 27.4 billion |
| Middle East and Africa | USD 10.0 billion | 4.0% | USD 10.7 billion | 7.0% | USD 19.7 billion |

North America leads because US firms still pay a large share of invoices by commercial card, which earns interchange, and US banks charge more per wire than banks in Europe. Regional revenue grows 4.6% a year to USD 133 billion, a Douglas Insights estimate, as FedNow and virtual cards replace cheques. Asia Pacific, USD 77.5 billion, grows 6.6% and overtakes North America by about 2030 on Chinese, Indian and Southeast Asian trade.

Europe, USD 62.5 billion, grows 4.4% a year because instant euro transfers must cost no more than standard ones, which caps fees. Latin America, USD 15.0 billion, grows 6.2% on Brazilian instant payments and Mexican supply chains, and the Middle East and Africa, USD 10.0 billion, grows 7.0% on Gulf trade finance and African mobile business wallets. Regional values sum to USD 263 billion in 2026, 0.04% above the headline, and USD 423 billion in 2035, 0.88% above it.

## Which companies lead the B2B payment market?

American Express leads B2B payment revenue with about 7% of 2025 value, Douglas Insights estimates, ahead of J.P. Morgan at about 6%; Citi, Visa, Mastercard, Corpay, BILL and Payoneer follow.

| Company | B2B payment lines | Latest reported figure | Source date |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| American Express | Corporate and small business cards | Commercial Services revenue USD 4.55 billion in Q3 2026 | Q3 2026 10-Q |
| J.P. Morgan Payments | Treasury, cash management, merchant services | 2025 revenue USD 19.4 billion, up 5% | 13 January 2026 |
| Corpay | Corporate payments, cross-border FX | Corporate Payments revenue USD 571 million in Q3 2026 | Q3 2026 10-Q |
| BILL Holdings | AP and AR automation | Fiscal 2026 revenue USD 1.65 billion, up 13% | 19 August 2026 |
| Payoneer | Cross-border B2B for small exporters | B2B volume USD 5.0 billion, up 59% | 5 November 2026 |

American Express annualises to about USD 18.2 billion of commercial revenue from its third-quarter figure, the largest single card franchise for business spending, per its [10-Q](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/0000004962/000000496226000409/axp-20260930.htm). J.P. Morgan's USD 19.4 billion of 2025 payments revenue includes merchant acquiring as well as treasury services, so Douglas Insights counts about three quarters of it as B2B. Corpay's Corporate Payments revenue rose to USD 571 million from USD 406 million a year earlier, about 41% of group revenue of USD 1.38 billion, its [10-Q for the third quarter of 2026](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/0001175454/000117545426000059/cpay-20260930.htm) shows, a quarter that includes Alpha Group.

Networks earn on B2B flows through processing and value-added services. Mastercard's value-added services and solutions revenue rose 19% in the third quarter of 2026, its [release](https://s25.q4cdn.com/479285134/files/content_files/3Q26-Mastercard-Earnings-Release.pdf) shows, and the company describes a USD 125 trillion B2B opportunity on its [news page of 3 November 2025](https://www.mastercard.com/news/ap/en/perspectives/en/2025/the-125t-opportunity-in-global-b2b-payments). Visa puts its Visa Commercial Solutions opportunity at about USD 35 trillion a year and Visa Direct B2B at about USD 25 trillion, its [fiscal 2025 10-K](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1403161/000140316125000089/v-20250930.htm) states. The top eight hold about 30% of revenue; thousands of banks share the rest, a Douglas Insights estimate.

## How much does a B2B payment cost, from a bank transfer to a virtual card?

B2B payment revenue averages 0.200% of value moved in 2025, Douglas Insights estimates, from under 0.02% for a domestic bank transfer to more than 3% on commercial card spending once fees and interest are counted.

The yield ladder follows risk and convenience. American Express earned USD 4.55 billion on USD 140.7 billion of commercial billed business in the third quarter of 2026, a revenue yield of about 3.2%, per its [10-Q](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/0000004962/000000496226000409/axp-20260930.htm). BILL's fiscal 2026 revenue of USD 1.65 billion against about USD 371 billion of payment volume across four quarters is a yield of about 0.45%, a Douglas Insights calculation from its [filings](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/0001786352/000162828026057932/bill-20260630xexx991.htm). Cross-border FX spreads run from 0.3% to 1.5% and domestic transfers cost cents to tens of dollars per item, Douglas Insights estimates.

Average yield rises 0.3% a year in the base case, to about 0.206% of value in 2035, because cards and software take share from cheap bank rails. The swing factor is regulation: caps on instant-transfer fees in Europe and any future US interchange rules for commercial cards would push yield down. One dollar of card spending earns about 160 times what one dollar sent by domestic transfer earns, a Douglas Insights estimate, which is why method mix moves revenue more than flow value.

## What if trade slows or card conversion speeds up: how large is the B2B payment market in 2035?

The B2B payment market ends 2035 between USD 329 billion and USD 508 billion across our three cases, around a base of USD 420 billion. World trade and the pace of card and software conversion set most of the spread.

| Case | Flow leg | Yield leg | Revenue rate | 2035 value |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Slower | 3.00% | -0.20% | 2.79% | USD 329 billion |
| Base case | 5.00% | 0.30% | 5.32% | USD 420 billion |
| Faster | 6.50% | 0.80% | 7.35% | USD 508 billion |

In the slower case trade fragments further, nominal growth slows and instant rails undercut card and wire fees, taking 2.0 points off flow growth and 0.5 points off yield. In the faster case virtual cards and embedded payables win mid-market firms in Asia and Europe, and cross-border volume keeps growing at double digits, adding 1.5 points of flows and 0.5 points of yield. One extra point of yearly revenue growth adds about USD 41.6 billion to 2035 value, a Douglas Insights estimate.

Live signals sit near the base case. Visa's 13% cross-border growth, Payoneer's 59% rise in B2B volume and Corpay's 41% jump in corporate payments revenue point up; American Express's 3% commercial billing growth points down. The signal to watch is FedNow's quarterly value: if it passes USD 1 trillion a quarter by 2028, Douglas Insights would cut its yield leg by about 0.2 points.

## Which rules shape B2B payment, from the EU Instant Payments Regulation to ViDA and ISO 20022?

Three rule sets shape B2B payment most: the EU Instant Payments Regulation, the EU VAT in the Digital Age package that mandates e-invoicing, and the ISO 20022 message standard now used across Swift.

The rails layer sets fees. Under the Instant Payments Regulation, euro-area payment providers must send instant payments and offer Verification of Payee, which checks that a name matches an account, from 9 October 2025, and providers outside the euro area follow from January 2027, the [European Commission](https://finance.ec.europa.eu/news/new-eu-rules-make-instant-euro-payments-faster-and-safer-2025-10-10_en) states. Instant transfers may cost no more than standard ones. Swift ended the coexistence of old MT messages and ISO 20022 for cross-border payments on 22 November 2025, and 97% of instructions used ISO 20022 on 24 November, its [release](https://www.swift.com/about-us/media-centre/press-releases/global-financial-community-completes-switch-iso-20022-paving-way-new-levels-cross-border-payment-speed-and-innovation-around-world) states; the richer data lets banks match payments to invoices automatically.

The invoice layer sets the timing. The EU adopted VAT in the Digital Age on 11 March 2025, it entered into force on 14 April 2025, and digital reporting for cross-border B2B transactions applies from 1 July 2030, the [Commission's ViDA page](https://taxation-customs.ec.europa.eu/taxation/vat/vat-digital-age-vida_en) shows. Mandatory e-invoices put structured data in front of every payables team, which Douglas Insights estimates will move about 4% of EU B2B flows from manual to automated payment by 2032.

## Douglas Exclusive: the B2B Yield Ladder

The B2B Yield Ladder is a Douglas Insights model of 11 inputs: 6 company filings, 2 network opportunity statements and 3 official payment statistics, listed below. It measures how much revenue each dollar earns as it moves between payment methods.

| Date | Input | What it moves |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 15 October 2025 | AvidXchange acquired at about USD 2.2 billion | Platform valuation |
| 3 November 2025 | Mastercard: USD 125 trillion B2B opportunity | Flow base |
| 5 November 2025 | Corpay completes USD 2.4 billion Alpha deal | Cross-border FX yield |
| Fiscal 2025 | Visa 10-K: USD 35 trillion commercial, USD 25 trillion Visa Direct B2B | Card-addressable flows |
| 13 January 2026 | J.P. Morgan Payments revenue USD 19.4 billion | Bank-rail revenue |
| 15 July 2026 | FedNow: more than 1,800 institutions live | Instant-rail reach |
| 19 August 2026 | BILL: USD 1.65 billion revenue, USD 98.2 billion Q4 volume | Platform yield |
| Q3 2026 | American Express: USD 4.55 billion on USD 140.7 billion | Card yield |
| Q3 2026 | FedNow: USD 370.86 billion, average USD 58,161 | Instant-rail ticket |
| Q3 2026 | Corpay Corporate Payments USD 571 million | Corporate payments growth |
| 5 November 2026 | Payoneer B2B volume USD 5.0 billion, up 59% | Small exporter flows |

The finding, a Douglas Insights estimate: moving 1% of world B2B flows, about USD 1.25 trillion, from domestic bank transfer at about 0.02% to commercial card at about 2.0% net of rebates adds about USD 24.8 billion of revenue, almost 10% of the 2025 market. Moving the same USD 1.25 trillion from card to an instant rail removes the same amount. The method mix, not the flow total, decides who wins.

The ladder changes how to read payment news. A record quarter on FedNow or a new Verification of Payee rule moves large values at very low yield, while a few points of virtual-card adoption among mid-market suppliers moves much smaller values at a hundred times the yield, so card and software firms can grow revenue faster than banks even as instant rails take volume, a Douglas Insights estimate.

## How does the methodology turn USD 125 trillion of flows into USD 250 billion?

Our methodology multiplies about USD 125 trillion of business-to-business payment flows in 2025 by an average revenue yield of 0.200% to reach USD 250 billion, then grows flows 5.0% a year and yield 0.3% a year.

The model covers 5 payment methods, 3 customer tiers and 5 regions, using 68 data points, 21 sourced and 47 modelled. The flow base takes Mastercard's USD 125 trillion B2B opportunity as the value of business payments a year; yield is built bottom-up from card, platform, FX and bank-rail revenue per dollar, Douglas Insights estimates. Arithmetic: USD 125 trillion x 0.200% = USD 250 billion; USD 250 billion x (1.05 x 1.003)^10 = USD 420 billion. Flows reach about USD 131 trillion in 2026 and USD 204 trillion in 2035.

Two cross-checks agree. First, American Express's annualised USD 18.2 billion of commercial revenue equals about 7.3% of our total, consistent with its place as the largest card issuer for business. Second, Visa's USD 35 trillion commercial and USD 25 trillion Visa Direct B2B opportunities sum to USD 60 trillion, about 48% of the USD 125 trillion base, which matches our view that roughly half of business flows are reachable by card or push-payment networks. AI tools help draft the text and automated checks test the arithmetic and links; the Douglas Insights research desk chooses the sources, builds the model and approves publication, as our [editorial standards](https://www.douglasinsights.com/research-methodology/) explain.

## What counts in the B2B payment study, and what is excluded?

The B2B payment study counts fee, interchange, FX and platform revenue that providers earn on payments between businesses, including government suppliers, plus net interest on commercial card balances. Consumer payments, payroll and merchant acquiring of consumer purchases are excluded.

The study splits value by 5 payment methods, 3 customer tiers and 5 regions: North America, Asia Pacific, Europe, Latin America, and the Middle East and Africa. Outsourced payment infrastructure appears in our [Payment as a Service Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/payment-as-a-service-market/) report, single-use card numbers in the [Virtual Cards Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/virtual-cards-market/) study and fleet fuel spending in the [B2B Fuel Cards Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/b2b-fuel-cards-market/) report.

## Market by segment

| Segment | Share | Value |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Bank transfers and treasury | 40% | $100 Bn |
