## Key takeaways

- The baby care and feminine hygiene product market is worth USD 62.0 billion in 2025 and USD 83.5 billion in 2035, a 3.02% CAGR.
- About 7.75 billion packs at an average USD 8.00 form the 2025 base; packs grow 1.6% a year and price 1.4%.
- Diapers and pants hold 52.0% of value, but reusable menstrual products grow fastest at 9.5% a year.
- Kimberly-Clark completed its Kenvue purchase on 2 November 2026 and Essity bought Edgewell's feminine care brands in February 2026.
- The Cradle-versus-Cycle Ledger shows feminine care beating baby care by 7.7 to 9.5 points at European-weighted makers, while leading diaper brands still gain packs.

Kimberly-Clark completed its purchase of Kenvue on 2 November 2026, and three days later reported that its International Personal Care sales fell 4.6% on an organic basis in the third quarter, including about 7.7 points lost to a "China social media disruption", [its results release of 5 November 2026](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/0000055785/000162828026070514/kmbq32026ex-991.htm) shows. The baby care and feminine hygiene product market covers disposable baby diapers and pants, baby wipes, sanitary pads, tampons, pantyliners and reusable menstrual products such as cups, discs and period underwear. Douglas Insights sizes it at USD 62.0 billion in 2025 at manufacturer selling prices, about 7.75 billion retail packs at an average USD 8.00 a pack, and at USD 83.5 billion in 2035, a 3.02% compound annual growth rate (CAGR). The study sits beside our [Reusable Period Panties Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/reusable-period-panties-market/), [Swim Nappies Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/swim-nappies-market/) and [Breast Pumps Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/breast-pumps-market/) reports inside our [beauty and personal care coverage](https://www.douglasinsights.com/industry/consumer-goods-retail/beauty-personal-care/), and every figure follows the Douglas Insights [research methodology](https://www.douglasinsights.com/research-methodology/).

## Which baby care and feminine hygiene product earns the most: diapers, wipes, pads or tampons?

Baby diapers and pants earn the most, 52.0% of 2025 value or USD 32.2 billion, Douglas Insights estimates. Reusable menstrual products grow fastest, at 9.5% a year from USD 1.24 billion to USD 3.07 billion by 2035.

| Product | Share 2025 | Value 2025 | CAGR 2026-2035 | Value 2035 |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Baby diapers and pants | 52.0% | USD 32.2 billion | 2.6% | USD 41.7 billion |
| Sanitary pads | 26.0% | USD 16.1 billion | 3.2% | USD 22.1 billion |
| Baby wipes | 9.0% | USD 5.58 billion | 3.6% | USD 7.95 billion |
| Tampons | 6.5% | USD 4.03 billion | 2.4% | USD 5.11 billion |
| Pantyliners | 4.5% | USD 2.79 billion | 3.0% | USD 3.75 billion |
| Reusable menstrual products | 2.0% | USD 1.24 billion | 9.5% | USD 3.07 billion |

Diapers lead because a child uses about 4 to 6 a day for roughly two and a half years, and pant-style diapers, which cost about 30% more a piece than taped diapers, keep gaining in China, Japan and Southeast Asia, Douglas Insights estimates. Growth of 2.6% a year is below the market rate because births are falling in the largest premium markets: China recorded 7.92 million births in 2025, the [National Bureau of Statistics said on 28 February 2026](https://www.stats.gov.cn/english/PressRelease/202602/t20260228_1962661.html), and Japan 671,236, down 2.2%.

Sanitary pads, USD 16.1 billion, are the second product and grow 3.2% as more girls in India, Indonesia, Nigeria and Ethiopia move from cloth to disposable pads. Baby wipes, USD 5.58 billion, grow 3.6% because they are used for hands, faces and surfaces long after a child leaves diapers; Hengan's wet wipes sales rose 30% to RMB 1.58 billion in 2025, its [annual results of 17 March 2026](https://www1.hkexnews.hk/listedco/listconews/sehk/2026/0317/2026031700179.pdf) show. Tampons, USD 4.03 billion, grow 2.4%, pantyliners, USD 2.79 billion, 3.0%, and reusable products 9.5% from a small base. Product values for 2035 sum to USD 83.6 billion, 0.16% above the USD 83.5 billion headline.

## How does the market split between baby care and feminine care, and by channel?

Baby care, diapers plus wipes, holds about 61.0% of 2025 value and feminine care 39.0%, Douglas Insights estimates. Supermarkets and hypermarkets sell about 42.0%; e-commerce, at 24.0%, gains about one point of share a year.

Baby care is worth about USD 37.8 billion and feminine care about USD 24.2 billion in 2025. Feminine care gains share every year, reaching about 40.7% by 2035 in our base case, because the number of women of menstruating age keeps rising in South Asia and Africa while births fall. The company data show the split: at Essity, feminine care grew 5.6% organically in the third quarter of 2026 while baby care fell 3.9%, its [interim report of 22 October 2026](https://assets.www.essity.com/essity/Q32026_Report_ENG.pdf) shows.

By channel, supermarkets and hypermarkets sell about 42.0%, e-commerce 24.0%, convenience stores and traditional trade 20.0%, and pharmacies and drugstores 14.0%, all Douglas Insights estimates. Online share is highest in China, where social commerce platforms set prices: Hengan said aggressive e-commerce promotions hit its sanitary napkin sales in 2025, and its combined sanitary napkin and diaper revenue fell about 5.3% to RMB 6.57 billion, per its [annual results](https://www1.hkexnews.hk/listedco/listconews/sehk/2026/0317/2026031700179.pdf). Subscription diaper boxes and club stores lift online and bulk packs in the United States, where a pack averages about 1.6 times the global pack size.

## What drives baby care and feminine hygiene growth: emerging-market diaper use, feminine care access, online subscriptions or wipes?

Packs sold rise 1.6% a year in our base case, from about 7.75 billion in 2025 to 9.08 billion in 2035. Four drivers add 2.30 gross points a year; falling births and reusable substitution remove 0.70.

### Emerging-market diaper use: 1.10 points

Rising diaper use outside the rich markets is the largest driver, worth 1.10 points. About 134 million babies are born each year, a figure implied by the United Nations finding that 4.7 million births, about 3.5% of the world total, are to mothers under 18, per the [World Population Prospects 2024 summary](https://population.un.org/wpp/assets/Files/WPP2024_Summary-of-Results.pdf). Douglas Insights estimates that only about 45% of children under 2 in South Asia and about 30% in sub-Saharan Africa wear disposable diapers every day, against more than 95% in North America, so each 1-point rise in daily use across those two regions adds about 0.11 billion packs a year. Procter & Gamble's baby care grew mid-single digits in the quarter to September 2026 on unit volume in Greater China and North America, its [release of 22 October 2026](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/0000080424/000008042426000250/fy2627q1jas8-kexhibit991.htm) shows.

### Feminine care access and longer use: 0.55 points

Feminine care adds 0.55 points as more girls and women use disposable pads for every period day. India's Supreme Court ordered states to provide free biodegradable sanitary napkins in government and private schools for classes 6 to 12 around 30 January 2026, [All India Radio reported](https://www.newsonair.gov.in/sc-directs-states-and-uts-to-provide-free-biodegradable-sanitary-napkins-in-schools). Essity's feminine care grew 5.9% organically in the second quarter and 5.6% in the third quarter of 2026, per its [July](https://mb.cision.com/Main/15798/4375134/4193962.pdf) and [October](https://assets.www.essity.com/essity/Q32026_Report_ENG.pdf) reports. Douglas Insights estimates that each 10 million new daily pad users add about 0.12 billion packs a year.

### Online subscriptions and bulk packs: 0.30 points

E-commerce adds 0.30 points through subscription boxes, club packs and auto-replenishment, which raise packs bought per child because parents run out less often. Kimberly-Clark grew North American volume 2.0% in the third quarter of 2026 even as its net price fell 1.8%, per its [results release](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/0000055785/000162828026070514/kmbq32026ex-991.htm), and its full-year 2025 volume rose 2.5% while price fell 0.9%, its [release of 27 January 2026](https://www.investor.kimberly-clark.com/news-releases/news-release-details/kimberly-clark-reports-strong-finish-second-year-transformation) shows. Douglas Insights estimates that online orders carry about 12% more packs per household a year than store purchases.

### Wipes beyond the changing mat: 0.35 points

Wipes add the last 0.35 points. Hengan's wet wipes grew 30% in 2025 to RMB 1.58 billion while its napkin and diaper line fell, per its [results](https://www1.hkexnews.hk/listedco/listconews/sehk/2026/0317/2026031700179.pdf), a sign that families keep buying wipes after the diaper years. Douglas Insights estimates that about 40% of baby wipe packs are now used by households with no child in diapers. Summed, 1.10 + 0.55 + 0.30 + 0.35 = 2.30 points; after 0.70 points of headwinds the 1.6% pack leg times the 1.4% price leg gives the 3.02% revenue rate.

## What holds back baby care and feminine hygiene: falling births, reusable products or weaker baby care sales?

Two headwinds remove 0.70 points a year from pack growth: falling births take 0.55 points and reusable substitution 0.15 points, Douglas Insights estimates. Baby care sales already fell at Essity, Ontex and Kao in 2025-2026.

Falling births are the sharpest drag. The United States recorded about 3,606,400 births in 2025, down 1%, the [National Center for Health Statistics said on 9 April 2026](https://cdc.gov/nchs/pressroom/releases/20260409.html); Japan's total fertility rate fell to 1.14, per the [Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare report of 3 June 2026](https://www.mhlw.go.jp/toukei/saikin/hw/jinkou/geppo/nengai25/dl/gaikyouR7houdou.pdf); and China's birth rate was 5.63 per 1,000. Together these three countries buy about 38% of diaper value, Douglas Insights estimates, so a 2% yearly fall in their births removes about 0.55 points from world pack growth.

The effect shows in results. Ontex's baby care revenue fell 11% to EUR 696.6 million in 2025, its [results of 12 February 2026](https://ontex.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/25Q4_PressRelease_Final_EN.pdf) show, and its third-quarter 2026 volume fell 5.1%, per its [release of 28 October 2026](https://ontex.com/news/financial/transformation-of-ontex-progressing-well-q3-impacted-by-steep-input-cost-increases-full-year-adj-ebitda-outlook-lowered-to-e143-148-million/). Kao's sanitary products, which include Merries diapers, fell 1.3% like-for-like in the first half of 2026 on "aggressive competition in Japan", its [first-half results](https://www.kao.com/content/dam/sites/kao/www-kao-com/global/en/investor-relations/pdf/kao-results-fy2026q2-en.pdf) show. Reusable cups, discs and period underwear take the last 0.15 points: each reusable user replaces about 12 disposable packs a year, and we expect about 10 million more reusable users by 2035, a Douglas Insights estimate.

## Where does baby care and feminine hygiene spending grow fastest: Asia Pacific, North America, Europe, Latin America or Middle East and Africa?

Asia Pacific buys the most, about USD 22.3 billion or 36.0% of 2025 value. The Middle East and Africa grows fastest, at 5.6% a year to USD 7.48 billion by 2035, on young populations and rising pad use.

| Region | Value 2025 | Share 2025 | Value 2026 | CAGR 2026-2035 | Value 2035 |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Global | USD 62.0 billion | 100% | USD 63.9 billion | 3.02% | USD 83.5 billion |
| Asia Pacific | USD 22.3 billion | 36.0% | USD 23.1 billion | 3.6% | USD 31.8 billion |
| North America | USD 16.7 billion | 27.0% | USD 17.1 billion | 2.2% | USD 20.8 billion |
| Europe | USD 12.4 billion | 20.0% | USD 12.6 billion | 1.8% | USD 14.8 billion |
| Latin America | USD 6.20 billion | 10.0% | USD 6.41 billion | 3.4% | USD 8.66 billion |
| Middle East and Africa | USD 4.34 billion | 7.0% | USD 4.58 billion | 5.6% | USD 7.48 billion |

Asia Pacific leads on value through China, Japan, India and Indonesia, and grows 3.6% a year to USD 31.8 billion. India and Southeast Asia carry the growth while China and Japan shrink in diapers and grow in feminine care and adult-style pants. Unicharm, the largest Asian maker, grew Personal Care sales 4.0% to JPY 396.8 billion in the first half of 2026 after a 6.3% fall in 2025, per its [first-half filing](https://finance-frontend-pc-dist.west.edge.storage-yahoo.jp/disclosure/20260805/20260804508870.pdf).

North America, USD 16.7 billion, grows 2.2% as promotions hold prices down; Kimberly-Clark's North American organic sales rose only 0.4% in the third quarter of 2026. Europe, USD 12.4 billion, grows slowest at 1.8% with the lowest birth rates. Latin America, USD 6.20 billion, grows 3.4%; Essity agreed on 19 August 2026 to buy Kenvue's Brazilian feminine care brands Carefree, Sempre Livre and o.b. for USD 284 million, with about BRL 800 million of yearly sales, per its [regulatory release](https://www.inderes.fi/en/releases/essity-acquires-feminine-care-business-in-brazil). The Middle East and Africa, USD 4.34 billion, grows fastest at 5.6%. Regional values sum to USD 63.8 billion in 2026, 0.04% below the headline, and USD 83.6 billion in 2035, 0.08% above it.

## Who leads baby care and feminine hygiene, and how concentrated is the field?

Procter & Gamble holds about 22.0% of 2025 value, a Douglas Insights estimate, through Pampers, Always and Tampax, ahead of Kimberly-Clark at 12.0% and Unicharm at 7.0%. The top three hold about 41.0%.

| Company | Main brands | Latest filed figure | Estimated share 2025 |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Procter & Gamble | Pampers, Always, Tampax | BFFC net sales USD 20.4 billion, FY to June 2026 | 22.0% |
| Kimberly-Clark | Huggies, Kotex, plus Kenvue's Stayfree and o.b. outside North America | Net sales USD 16.4 billion, 2025 | 12.0% |
| Unicharm | MamyPoko, Moony, Sofy | Personal Care JPY 774.4 billion, 2025 | 7.0% |
| Essity | Libero, Libresse, Bodyform, Playtex, Carefree | Net sales SEK 138.5 billion, 2025 | 6.0% |
| Kao | Merries, Laurier | Sanitary products JPY 81.7 billion, 1H 2026 | 2.5% |
| Ontex | Retailer brands, Canbebe, Moltex | Revenue EUR 1.76 billion, 2025 | 1.7% |
| Hengan International | Anerle, Space 7, Q•MO | Hygiene products RMB 6.57 billion, 2025 | 1.5% |

Procter & Gamble's Baby, Feminine and Family Care segment sold USD 20.4 billion in the year to June 2026, up 1%, and its fourth-quarter baby care grew low single digits while feminine care fell low single digits on lower volume in Europe, the [release of 29 July 2026](https://us.pg.com/newsroom/news-releases/PG-Announces-Fourth-Quarter-and-Fiscal-Year-2026-Results/) states; we place about USD 13.6 billion of baby and feminine care with the company. Kimberly-Clark's Kenvue deal, announced on 3 November 2025 at an enterprise value of about USD 48.7 billion, creates a group with about USD 32 billion of 2025 revenue, its [announcement](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/55785/000110465925105220/tm2530027d1_ex99-1.htm) shows, and adds feminine care brands that Kimberly-Clark lacked in India and Latin America.

Essity has been buying feminine care: it completed the purchase of Edgewell's Playtex, Stayfree, Carefree and o.b. brands in North America on 2 February 2026, after agreeing a USD 340 million price on 12 November 2025, per its [completion release](https://www.essity.com/media/press-release/essity-completes-the-acquisition-of-edgewell-s-feminine-care-business/1e5711f0c39ae458) and [Edgewell's filing](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1096752/000162828025051814/ex991epcdivestitureoffemca.htm). Kao, Ontex and Hengan are smaller; Hengan's Q•MO diaper brand grew about 9.6% to about RMB 600 million in 2025. Drylock, Daio Paper, Kingdom Healthcare and hundreds of regional private-label makers share most of the remaining 47.3%.

## What does a pack of baby care and feminine hygiene products cost, and how fast does the price rise?

A pack sells for about USD 8.00 on average in 2025 at manufacturer prices, Douglas Insights estimates, from about USD 2.50 for a South Asian pad pack to above USD 25 for a US club diaper box.

Douglas Insights splits packs into three tiers: value packs below USD 4, with about 46% of packs; standard packs from USD 4 to 15, with about 44%; and large and premium packs above USD 15, with about 10% of packs but about 31% of value. A diaper costs about USD 0.22 a piece on average, a pad about USD 0.09 and a tampon about USD 0.17, all estimates. The 1.4% price leg takes the average pack to about USD 8.11 in 2026 and USD 9.20 in 2035.

Two forces set the price leg. Promotions and private label are pushing prices down now: Kimberly-Clark's North American net price fell 1.8% in the third quarter of 2026 "from increased promotional activity", its International Personal Care net price fell 2.0% in 2025, and Essity said its "sales prices were lower" in the third quarter, per the [Kimberly-Clark](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/0000055785/000162828026070514/kmbq32026ex-991.htm) and [Essity](https://assets.www.essity.com/essity/Q32026_Report_ENG.pdf) reports. Input costs push the other way: Ontex said raw material and transport costs peaked about 10% above the start of 2026 in the third quarter, for nonwovens, superabsorbent polymer, backsheet, packaging and fuel, and confirmed price increases in Europe and North America for the fourth quarter, its [release of 28 October 2026](https://ontex.com/news/financial/transformation-of-ontex-progressing-well-q3-impacted-by-steep-input-cost-increases-full-year-adj-ebitda-outlook-lowered-to-e143-148-million/) states. Premium pants and night pads add about 1.0 point a year of mix, a Douglas Insights estimate, so the leg averages 1.4% over the decade.

## What rules govern baby care and feminine hygiene, from PFAS bans to hygiene standards?

Four rule sets govern these products: the EU single-use plastics marking for pads, tampons and wipes, California's ban on PFAS in menstrual products, China's revised hygiene standard GB 15979-2024 and US FDA oversight of tampons as medical devices.

In the European Union, Implementing Regulation (EU) 2020/2151 has required a harmonised marking on sanitary towels, tampons and applicators and wet wipes since 3 July 2021, warning buyers that the products contain plastic and must not be flushed, the [regulation text](https://eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-content/EN/TXT/HTML/?uri=CELEX:32020R2151) shows. In California, [Assembly Bill 2515](https://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces/billNavClient.xhtml?bill_id=202320240AB2515), signed on 30 September 2024, banned intentionally added PFAS in menstrual products from 1 January 2025, and from 1 January 2027 it caps PFAS measured as total organic fluorine. Because California is about 11% of US feminine care value, a Douglas Insights estimate, makers reformulate for the whole country.

China's mandatory standard GB 15979-2024 for disposable sanitary products came into force on 1 July 2025, its first revision since 2002, banning recycled materials and setting zero tolerance for migratable fluorescent whitening agents, [Xinhua reported on 8 July 2025](https://www.news.cn/fashion/20250708/b716f8550ef042219f1248f20b2ae51e/c.html). In the United States, tampons are medical devices; an FDA laboratory study of 11 tampon types from 6 brands, published in June 2026, found lead and 20 other metals "far below what would be considered harmful", the [FDA page updated on 6 July 2026](https://www.fda.gov/medical-devices/products-and-medical-procedures/menstrual-product-options-facts-and-safe-use) states. Douglas Insights expects these rules to add about 0.2 points a year to price through testing and cleaner materials.

## What if births fall faster or diaper use spreads faster: how large is the baby care and feminine hygiene market in 2035?

The market ends 2035 between USD 69.2 billion and USD 98.7 billion across three cases, around a USD 83.5 billion base. Births in Asia and diaper use in Africa set most of the spread.

| Case | Pack leg | Price leg | Revenue rate | 2035 value |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Slower | 0.6% | 0.5% | 1.10% | USD 69.2 billion |
| Base case | 1.6% | 1.4% | 3.02% | USD 83.5 billion |
| Faster | 2.5% | 2.2% | 4.75% | USD 98.7 billion |

In the slower case births in China, India and Europe fall about 3% a year and promotions keep prices flat, taking 1.0 point off packs and 0.9 points off price. In the faster case daily diaper use in South Asia passes 60% by 2032 and free pad schemes spread across Africa, adding 0.9 points to packs, while input costs add 0.8 points to price. One extra point of yearly revenue growth adds about USD 8.47 billion to 2035 value, and one point less removes about USD 7.76 billion, Douglas Insights estimates.

Company signals bracket the base case. Procter & Gamble's segment grew 3% organically in the September 2026 quarter and Essity's Personal Care 3.2%, while Kimberly-Clark's organic sales fell 1.3% and Ontex's like-for-like revenue fell 4.4%, the sources above show. Our 3.02% sits between them.

The finding, a Douglas Insights estimate: feminine care beats baby care at every European-weighted maker, by 9.5 points at Essity in the third quarter of 2026 and by 7.7 points at Ontex in 2025, but Procter & Gamble reversed the gap in its last two quarters, with baby care ahead on unit volume in Greater China and North America. The reason is brand strength where births are falling: in a shrinking diaper market, buyers concentrate on the leading premium brand, so the leader gains packs while smaller makers and private label lose them. Across our 7.75 billion packs, we estimate that feminine care grows about 0.9 points a year faster than baby care, but the top diaper brand in each country grows about 1.5 points faster than the diaper average.

The ledger changes how to read results. A weak baby care quarter at a mid-sized maker is not a sign of weak demand for the leader, and acquisitions are moving to feminine care, as Essity's two 2026 deals and Kimberly-Clark's Kenvue purchase show. If the gap holds, feminine care reaches about 42% of value by 2035, against 39.0% in 2025 and 40.7% in our base case, and the faster case comes closer.

## How does the methodology turn 7.75 billion packs into USD 62.0 billion?

Our methodology multiplies about 7.75 billion retail packs by an average manufacturer price of USD 8.00 to reach USD 62.0 billion in 2025, then grows packs 1.6% and price 1.4% a year.

The model covers 6 products, 2 user groups, 4 channels and 5 regions, using 64 data points, 22 sourced and 42 modelled. Packs come from births and children under 3, women aged 12 to 50, daily use rates and pack sizes; prices come from company price and mix disclosures and shelf checks, all Douglas Insights estimates. Arithmetic: 7.75 billion x USD 8.00 = USD 62.0 billion; USD 62.0 billion x (1.016 x 1.014)^10 = USD 83.5 billion, within 0.05% of the headline. Packs reach about 7.87 billion in 2026 and 9.08 billion in 2035.

Two cross-checks agree. First, our USD 13.6 billion for Procter & Gamble is about two-thirds of its USD 20.4 billion segment, which also holds paper towels and toilet paper. Second, Unicharm's JPY 774.4 billion Personal Care sales, about USD 5.1 billion including adult care and wellness, sit above our USD 4.34 billion, a 7.0% share, by about the size of its adult care business. AI tools help draft the text and automated checks test the arithmetic and links; the Douglas Insights research desk chooses the sources, builds the model and approves publication, as our [editorial standards](https://www.douglasinsights.com/research-methodology/) explain.

## What counts in the baby care and feminine hygiene study, and what is excluded?

The study counts disposable diapers and pants, baby wipes, sanitary pads, tampons, pantyliners and reusable menstrual products sold worldwide, at manufacturer selling prices. Adult incontinence products, baby skin creams, breast pads and hospital supplies are excluded.

The study splits value by 6 products, baby care and feminine care, 4 channels and 5 regions: Asia Pacific, North America, Europe, Latin America and the Middle East and Africa. Private-label packs count at the price the retailer pays the maker.
