## Key takeaways

- Douglas Insights sizes beauty supplements at USD 4.18 billion in 2025: 47.6 million buyers spending USD 87.8 each.
- Revenue reaches USD 8.36 billion in 2035, a 7.18% annual rate from 4.86% buyer growth and 2.21% spend growth.
- Collagen peptides hold 41.7% of revenue; probiotic skin supplements grow fastest at 10.3% despite weak hydration evidence.
- Asia Pacific leads with 40.8% of 2025 revenue, while Middle East and Africa grows fastest at 9.05%.
- Japan made FFC health-damage reporting mandatory on 1 September 2024; GMP enforcement follows on 1 September 2026.

A month of Vital Proteins Collagen Peptides costs a buyer about USD 50.36, because a USD 47.00 tub holds 28 servings, while a month of Nature's Bounty Hair, Skin & Nails gummies runs to roughly USD 3.52. That 14.3-fold spread defines the Beauty Supplements Market. Douglas Insights sizes it at USD 4.18 billion in 2025, the product of 47.6 million buyers and USD 87.8 of average annual spend. Revenue climbs to USD 8.36 billion in 2035, a 7.18% annual rate built from 4.86% buyer growth and 2.21% spend growth. Rules tightened on 1 September 2024, when Japan made it [mandatory for makers of Foods with Function Claims to report health-damage cases](https://www.pref.kanagawa.jp/docs/e8z/cnt/f6576/shokuhin_kenkouhigai.html), a direct response to the beni-koji red yeast rice recall. Collagen tubs sit beside creams on our [beauty and personal care hub](https://www.douglasinsights.com/industry/consumer-goods-retail/beauty-personal-care/); the buyers-times-spend build follows the [Douglas Insights research methodology](https://www.douglasinsights.com/research-methodology/).

## Why do people swallow beauty supplements instead of rubbing collagen on?

About 47.6 million buyers paid for beauty supplements in 2025 because a capsule, powder or shot promises to reach skin, hair and nails from inside, where a cream cannot go.

The category sells appearance, not disease relief. Scope covers collagen peptides, biotin and hair-nail-skin vitamin blends, hyaluronic acid, ceramides, antioxidant glow blends and probiotic skin supplements, provided they are swallowed and marketed for how skin, hair or nails look.

The habit is oldest in Japan. Shiseido began selling collagen supplements in 1996, and its The Collagen line still ships as drinks, tablets and powders. In the United States the pull is broader: the Council for Responsible Nutrition reported in October 2024 that 75% of adults use dietary supplements, and that younger women are the likeliest group to take them for skin, hair and nails.

Buyers judge results by eye and many lapse within a season, so the average buyer spends only USD 87.8 a year, about USD 7.32 a month. Readers who follow the wider pill-and-powder economy can set these figures beside the [Nutraceutical Products Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/nutraceutical-products-market/).

## Why are collagen and biotin buyers growing 4.86% a year?

Beauty supplement buyer numbers rise 4.86% a year to 2035, and four forces supply that volume leg after restraints: online discovery, Asian drink rituals, mass collagen distribution and hair-loss worry.

Online discovery contributes 1.94 points. E-commerce already carries 43.4% of beauty supplements revenue, about USD 1.81 billion, and short-video platforms turn a before-and-after clip into a monthly subscription. Shiseido's China team told trade press in January 2024 that Douyin leads sales of beauty-from-within drinks in that market.

Asian drink rituals contribute 1.37 points. Shiseido launched three INRYU ampoule drinks in Japan in April 2024 and in China in May 2024 through cross-border e-commerce, priced at 788 yuan for a 10-day box. The company reported a 35% repeat purchase rate for the existing INRYU range and said drinks hold the largest format share of China's beauty-from-within category. Each new drinker in Shanghai or Osaka adds a buyer who spends far above the global average, and Asia Pacific supplies roughly two of every five net new buyers through 2035.

Mass collagen distribution contributes 0.96 points. When Nestlé Health Science agreed on 10 June 2020 to take [a majority stake in Vital Proteins](https://mastercorporate.nestlehealthscience.com/newsroom/press-releases/nestle-health-science-agrees-to-acquire-majority-stake-in-vital-proteins), the brand had 150 SKUs in 35,000 stores across North America and Europe; by the February 2022 buyout of the remaining equity it listed more than 250 SKUs. Grocery, club and coffee-aisle placement puts collagen in front of shoppers who never visit a beauty counter. Collagen peptides alone add about USD 1.78 billion of revenue between 2025 and 2035, 42.7% of the market's total gain, and mass shelves recruit most of those new buyers at a first-month cost near USD 50.

Hair-loss worry contributes 0.59 points. Unilever cited more than 114 million U.S. consumers with hair health issues when it agreed on 30 May 2022 to buy a majority of Nutrafol, a brand sold through about 3,000 physicians and online. Thinning hair converts browsers into monthly buyers faster than skin glow does, because the worry is visible every morning and the remedy is sold as a course. Nutrafol backs its formula with a six-month money-back guarantee, which anchors at least half a year of spend per converted buyer.

Together the four forces sum to 4.86 points, already net of the 1.16 points the restraints below remove. Douglas Insights expects the buyer base to reach 76.5 million in 2035, an addition of 28.9 million.

## Which ingredient segment, from collagen peptides to probiotic strains, leads beauty supplements revenue?

Collagen peptides lead with 41.7% of 2025 beauty supplements revenue, USD 1.74 billion, and still rank first in 2035 at USD 3.53 billion.

| Segment | Share 2025 | Value 2025 | Growth 2026-2035 | Value 2035 |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Collagen peptides | 41.7% | USD 1.74 billion | 7.3% | USD 3.53 billion |
| Biotin and hair-nail-skin vitamin blends | 27.4% | USD 1.15 billion | 4.6% | USD 1.80 billion |
| Hyaluronic acid, ceramides and glow blends | 22.6% | USD 944.5 million | 8.1% | USD 2.06 billion |
| Probiotic skin supplements | 8.3% | USD 346.9 million | 10.3% | USD 924.6 million |

Collagen peptides earn USD 1.74 billion because the dose is large, often 10 to 20 grams a day, which pushes buyers into premium powders and drinks priced per gram. Biotin and hair-nail-skin vitamin blends earn USD 1.15 billion from the widest buyer base but the lowest ticket, since a mass gummy month costs under USD 4. Hyaluronic acid, ceramides and antioxidant glow blends earn USD 944.5 million, helped by Japanese skin-moisture products and by premium ampoules that combine several actives. Probiotic skin supplements earn USD 346.9 million, the smallest base.

Probiotic skin supplements grow fastest, at 10.3% a year, because gut-skin marketing lets brands sell one strain story to digestive and beauty shoppers at once, and direct sellers bundle them into wellness kits. Glow blends sold for screen-light skin stress overlap with topical actives tracked in the [Blue Light Protection Ingredients Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/blue-light-protection-ingredients-market/), but only the swallowed versions count here.

## Do gummies, powders or collagen shots win the beauty supplements format split?

Powders win, with 36.2% of 2025 beauty supplements revenue, because a 20-gram collagen serving fits a scoop, not a capsule.

Capsules and tablets take 27.9%, or USD 1.17 billion, carrying biotin, hyaluronic acid and ceramide doses measured in milligrams. Gummies take 19.6%, USD 819.1 million; they win on taste and lose on dose, since a gummy holds little collagen. Drinks and shots take 16.3%, USD 681.2 million, concentrated in Japan and China where the ampoule is a ritual. Powders themselves bring USD 1.51 billion.

By channel, e-commerce holds 43.4%, pharmacy and drugstore 22.8% (USD 952.9 million), direct selling 19.1% (USD 798.2 million) and specialty beauty retail 14.7% (USD 614.4 million). The counter is losing to the cart.

## Where do beauty supplement buyers concentrate, from Tokyo collagen drinks to US gummies?

Asia Pacific leads with USD 1.71 billion, 40.8% of 2025 beauty supplements revenue, anchored by Japan's collagen-drink habit and China's cross-border buying.

| Region | 2025 | 2035 | Growth 2026-2035 |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Asia Pacific | USD 1.71 billion | USD 3.62 billion | 7.83% |
| North America | USD 1.24 billion | USD 2.27 billion | 6.27% |
| Europe | USD 789.9 million | USD 1.41 billion | 5.94% |
| Latin America | USD 267.5 million | USD 628.6 million | 8.92% |
| Middle East and Africa | USD 179.6 million | USD 427.0 million | 9.05% |

Douglas Insights puts Asia Pacific at 7.83% annual growth, enough to reach USD 3.62 billion by 2035. North America holds 29.6%, or USD 1.24 billion, built on club-store gummies, Vital Proteins tubs and physician-sold hair formulas; it grows 6.27%. Europe holds 18.9%, USD 789.9 million, and grows a slower 5.94% because the EU claim list leaves collagen brands little to say on pack.

Middle East and Africa is the fastest region at 9.05% a year, rising from USD 179.6 million to USD 427.0 million, as Gulf e-commerce and young urban buyers enter from a small base. Latin America is the wildcard: at 8.92% it reaches USD 628.6 million, yet currency swings there move the dollar figure more than buyer counts do.

## How do DSHEA, EU Regulation 1924/2006 and Japan's FFC rules police a glow claim?

Three claim regimes govern beauty supplements, and the strictest is the EU, whose closed list of permitted claims was adopted on 16 May 2012 under Regulation 432/2012.

### United States: structure-function claims under DSHEA

The 1994 Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act lets a brand say collagen "supports skin hydration" without pre-approval. Under [FDA rules on structure-function claims](https://www.fda.gov/food/nutrition-food-labeling-and-critical-foods/structurefunction-claims), the maker must hold substantiation, notify FDA no later than 30 days after marketing and print the disclaimer that FDA has not evaluated the claim.

### European Union: Regulation 1924/2006 and the authorised list

Regulation 1924/2006 sets the framework, and [Regulation 432/2012](https://eur-lex.europa.eu/eli/reg/2012/432/oj/eng) lists the claims that pass. Biotin may cite normal hair and skin, zinc normal hair, nails and skin, selenium normal hair and nails, copper normal hair and skin pigmentation, and vitamin C normal collagen formation for skin. Collagen itself has no authorised claim: on 20 June 2013 EFSA concluded that skin elasticity and wrinkle reduction are not health functions.

### Japan: Foods with Function Claims after beni-koji

Japan's FFC system lets a company notify evidence to the Consumer Affairs Agency before sale; 1,429 notifications arrived in fiscal 2022. After the March 2024 beni-koji recall, amended standards were published on 23 August 2024. From 1 September 2024, health-damage reporting became mandatory, GMP for supplement factories is enforced from 1 September 2026, and novel-ingredient filings need 120 days of notice from April 2025.

## Which hurdles, from biotin lab-test interference to claim refusals, slow ingestible beauty?

Three hurdles remove 1.16 points a year from beauty supplements volume growth: biotin test interference, Japanese compliance cost and thin trial evidence.

Biotin interference removes 0.48 points. On 5 November 2019 FDA reminded clinicians and consumers that high-dose biotin can distort certain lab tests, including cardiac troponin results, and go undetected. Hair-skin-nail gummies carrying 6,000 mcg per two-gummy serving sit squarely in that zone, and doctors now ask patients to pause them before blood work. Dosing caution also shapes the [Iron Supplements Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/iron-supplements-market/), but there the risk is overload, not assay error.

Japanese compliance cost removes 0.37 points. Mandatory reporting from 1 September 2024 and GMP enforcement from 1 September 2026 raise fixed costs for small FFC brands, and some will exit rather than certify a contract plant.

Thin evidence removes 0.31 points. A 2017 dermatology review by Soleymani and colleagues found no randomized trial of biotin for hair in healthy people. A 2023 Nutrients meta-analysis of 26 trials and 1,721 participants found collagen improved hydration, while its elasticity result missed significance at p = 0.06.

## How much does a month of collagen powder or hair gummies cost a beauty supplement buyer?

Realised monthly costs for beauty supplements span USD 3.52 to about USD 333, a 94.6-fold band from drugstore gummies to Shiseido ampoules.

| Price band | Example | Pack | Cost per 30 days |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Mass gummy | Nature's Bounty Hair, Skin & Nails | 230 gummies, USD 13.49 to 16.88 | USD 3.52 to 4.40 |
| Collagen powder | Vital Proteins Collagen Peptides | 567 g, 28 servings, USD 47.00 | USD 50.36 |
| Prestige ampoule | Shiseido INRYU drink | 10 x 30 ml, 788 yuan | 2,364 yuan, about USD 333 |

Club stores sold the 230-count gummy bottle at USD 14.94 on promotion, or USD 3.90 a month. Collagen powders cost USD 1.68 a day because 20 grams of peptide is real protein.

Realised spend per buyer is far lower than any list price. Average annual spend of USD 87.8 equals 1.74 months of a full collagen routine, which shows how often buyers start, stop and restart. The price leg runs at 2.21% a year, lifting average spend to USD 109.25 by 2035 as buyers trade up from gummies to powders and drinks.

## Which companies own the collagen tub, the biotin bottle and the beauty ampoule?

Nestlé Health Science leads with a 9.4% share of 2025 beauty supplements revenue, about USD 392.9 million by Douglas Insights estimate, through Vital Proteins and Nature's Bounty.

| Company | Beauty brands | Estimated share 2025 | Position built on |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Nestlé Health Science | Vital Proteins, Nature's Bounty | 9.4% | Collagen in 35,000 stores; biotin gummies in mass retail |
| Amway | Nutrilite | 4.1% | Direct selling; nutrition was 64% of USD 7.4 billion 2024 sales |
| Unilever | Nutrafol | 3.3% | About 3,000 physicians plus online subscription |
| Shiseido | The Collagen, INRYU | 2.2% | Collagen since 1996; ampoule drinks in Japan and China |
| FANCL (Kirin) | FANCL supplements | 1.6% | D2C channels at 70% of sales |
| Herbalife | Collagen and skin lines | 1.1% | Targeted nutrition at 29.7% of 2024 net sales |

Douglas Insights estimates the top three, Nestlé Health Science, Amway and Unilever, hold 16.8% of revenue, a fragmented field where pharmacy own-labels and thousands of online brands share the rest. Shares are estimates anchored on disclosed parent revenues, not reported segment sales.

Nestlé built its lead in two steps: the 10 June 2020 majority stake in Vital Proteins, then the 2021 purchase of The Bountiful Company core brands, which added Nature's Bounty. Amway reported USD 7.4 billion of 2024 sales with nutrition at 64%. Shiseido rests on 29 years of collagen drinks. FANCL posted revenue of 110.9 billion yen in the year to March 2024, and [Kirin consolidated FANCL on 19 September 2024](https://www.kirinholdings.com/en/newsroom/release/2024/0912_02.html) with 75.24% ownership, eighteen days after Japan's reporting rule took effect. Upstream, Rousselot, part of Darling Ingredients, supplies Peptan collagen peptides, and Gelita supplies the Verisol peptide whose 2013 EFSA file shaped European labels.

## What if beauty supplement buyers grow a point faster or slower by 2035?

Beauty supplements revenue lands at USD 8.36 billion in 2035 in the base case, USD 6.52 billion if growth slows and USD 10.54 billion if it quickens.

| Case | Buyer growth | Spend growth | Revenue CAGR | 2035 value |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Slower | 3.1% | 1.4% | 4.54% | USD 6.52 billion |
| Base | 4.86% | 2.21% | 7.18% | USD 8.36 billion |
| Faster | 6.6% | 2.9% | 9.69% | USD 10.54 billion |

The slower case assumes Japan's 1 September 2024 reporting rule and the 2026 GMP deadline thin the FFC shelf, while biotin warnings spread to more lab panels. The faster case has collagen drinks crossing into Western grocery.

Sensitivity is steep. Adding one point to annual buyer growth lifts 2035 revenue by about USD 832 million; removing one point cuts it by about USD 764 million. Outside estimates of beauty supplement growth span 5.8% to 9.6% a year; the 7.18% base rate lands under their 8.0% median because lapsed buyers are counted here.

## Douglas Exclusive: the beauty claim evidence scorecard

The scorecard rates seven beauty supplement ingredients out of 100 on trial depth and on the claim each jurisdiction permits.

Method: up to 60 points for randomized trials, at 3 points per trial counted in a [2022 Frontiers in Nutrition meta-analysis of 66 trials](https://www.frontiersin.org/journals/nutrition/articles/10.3389/fnut.2022.895192/full), halved when the pooled result showed no benefit; 10 points where a US structure-function claim is open; 30 points for an authorised EU claim; and 10 points as a Japan FFC proxy where at least 4 positive trials exist.

| Ingredient | Randomized trials | US | EU authorised | Japan proxy | Score |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Collagen peptides | 16 | 10 | 0 | 10 | 68 |
| Ceramides | 11 | 10 | 0 | 10 | 53 |
| Polyphenols | 9 | 10 | 0 | 10 | 47 |
| Carotenoids | 7 | 10 | 0 | 10 | 41 |
| Biotin | 0 | 10 | 30 | 0 | 40 |
| Hyaluronic acid | 4 | 10 | 0 | 10 | 32 |
| Lactic acid bacteria | 14 | 10 | 0 | 0 | 31 |

Finding one: biotin carries the strongest EU claim on zero hair trials. Finding two: lactic acid bacteria, the base of probiotic skin supplements, scored 31 because 14 trials showed no hydration gain, yet the segment grows fastest at 10.3%. Douglas Insights tallies 58.3% of 2025 revenue, about USD 2.44 billion, in segments scoring below 50. The revenue-weighted score is 51.8 of 100.

## Methodology: how do 47.6 million beauty supplement buyers reconcile with USD 4.18 billion?

Douglas Insights counts 5 regional buyer pools and 27 sourced documents behind the beauty supplements model.

Receipt: 47.6 million buyers × USD 87.8 = USD 4.1793 billion, rounded to USD 4.18 billion. Forward: 1.0486 × 1.0221 − 1 = 7.18% a year; 4.18 × 1.0718^10 = USD 8.36 billion. Buyers reach 76.5 million and spend reaches USD 109.25.

Cross-checks: two published 2025 estimates of USD 3.96 billion and USD 5.17 billion bracket the figure, 5.5% above the first and 19.2% below the second. Segment models sum to USD 8.30 billion in 2035, 0.7% below the global line. Spend per buyer equals 1.74 months of a USD 50.36 collagen routine, consistent with high churn.
