## Which companies build biodiesel reactor trains, and how concentrated is supply?

Three licensors, Desmet, CPM Crown and BDI-BioEnergy International, hold about 41.8% of 2025 biodiesel reactor revenue on Douglas Insights estimates. Their edge is process know-how sold with the vessel: guaranteed ester yield, methanol recovery and ASTM D6751 fuel quality. Regional fabricators and engineering contractors take most of the rest.

Desmet leads with an estimated 21.4% share, or about USD 76.1 million, built on turnkey oilseed and biodiesel plants and a sales channel for third-party reactors. Cavitation Technologies (CTi) states in its [annual report for the year to 30 June 2024](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1376793/000168316824006768/cavitation_i10k-063024.htm) that Desmet holds a three-year worldwide limited exclusive licence, signed in February 2024, to sell its Nano Reactor systems for oils, fats, oleochemicals and biodiesels. CTi booked USD 1.363 million of revenue that year, 100% of it from Desmet, including USD 865,000 of reactor sales. The same filing notes that Desmet installed the first Nano Reactor at a South American biodiesel plant in fiscal 2017, and that biodiesel produced no CTi sales in fiscal 2024 or 2023.

CPM Crown sits second at roughly 11.8%, about USD 42.0 million, on process equipment sold into existing oil and fat plants. The SimplEster deal adds a licensed process aimed at lower-grade feedstocks. BDI-BioEnergy International, founded in 1996 in Raaba-Grambach, Austria, claims more than 70 biodiesel plants realised with its own technology, over 300 filed patents and an export rate above 90%. Douglas Insights puts BDI at 8.6%, close to USD 30.6 million, because so much of its order book is RetroFit and Multi-Feedstock MF100+ conversion work.

Hielscher Ultrasonics sells inline ultrasonic reactors rated up to 16 tons an hour per reactor. Alfa Laval supplies the high-speed separators that pull glycerin from the ester stream and the plate heat exchangers around the reactor, so it shares projects with every licensor without selling the reaction vessel itself. Inventure Renewables earns licence income rather than steel revenue.

| Company | Basis of position | Douglas Insights share estimate, 2025 |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Desmet | Turnkey plants, licensed CTi Nano Reactor channel | 21.4% |
| CPM Crown | Oil and fat process equipment, SimplEster licence from 6 August 2026 | 11.8% |
| BDI-BioEnergy International | 70+ plants, RetroFit and MF100+ multi-feedstock | 8.6% |
| Hielscher Ultrasonics | Inline ultrasonic reactors to 16 t/h | 2.3% |
| Regional fabricators and EPC firms | Local stirred-tank and batch builds | 55.9% |

## Which biodiesel reactor type leads, and which design gains share by 2035?

Continuous stirred-tank reactors lead with 38.4% of 2025 biodiesel reactor revenue, or USD 136.6 million, because two-stage stirred trains remain the default for plants above 100,000 tonnes a year. Ultrasonic and hydrodynamic cavitation reactors grow fastest, at 7.3% a year to 2035.

| Reactor type | Share 2025 | Value 2025 | Growth to 2035 | Value 2035 |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Continuous stirred-tank reactors | 38.4% | USD 136.6 million | 4.1% | USD 204.2 million |
| Plug-flow and static mixer reactors | 24.7% | USD 87.9 million | 5.6% | USD 151.5 million |
| Batch reactors | 14.6% | USD 51.9 million | 2.2% | USD 64.6 million |
| Ultrasonic and hydrodynamic cavitation reactors | 13.9% | USD 49.5 million | 7.3% | USD 100.1 million |
| Supercritical and heterogeneous catalyst reactors | 8.4% | USD 29.9 million | 6.4% | USD 55.6 million |

Continuous stirred-tank reactors keep USD 136.6 million because licensors guarantee yields on them and lenders know the design. Plug-flow and static mixer reactors hold 24.7%, or USD 87.9 million, since they cut residence time and suit debottlenecking an existing line. Batch reactors carry 14.6%, about USD 51.9 million, mostly in small plants and acid-oil pre-esterification, and they grow only 2.2% a year.

Ultrasonic and hydrodynamic cavitation reactors hold 13.9%, or USD 49.5 million, and double to USD 100.1 million by 2035. The reason is speed: Hielscher says cavitation emulsifies methanol and oil within 2 to 10 seconds, with glycerin settling in under 60 minutes. Supercritical and heterogeneous catalyst reactors take the final 8.4%, close to USD 29.9 million, and grow 6.4% as waste-fat plants avoid soap formation.

## Why are B40 and B15 mandate steps the main source of biodiesel reactor orders?

Blend mandates in Indonesia and Brazil supply 2.20 of the 3.10 points of yearly growth in biodiesel reactor shipments, Douglas Insights calculates. Each step in a blend rate needs new esterification capacity within months, and producers buy reactor trains to meet it. Feedstock change and credits add the remaining 0.90 points.

Indonesia adds 1.35 points. The energy ministry made B40 compulsory from 1 January 2025 under decree 341.K/EK.01/MEM.E/2024 and set a 2025 biodiesel allocation of [15.6 million kilolitres](https://esdm.go.id/en/media-center/news-archives/wujudkan-ketahanan-energi-dan-kurangi-impor-menteri-esdm-mandatori-b40-berlaku-1-januari-2025), split into 7.55 million for subsidised public service obligation fuel and 8.07 million for the rest. Its release names 24 biofuel suppliers and a planned move to B50 in 2026. A 10-point blend step on a diesel pool that size needs several new 100,000-tonne trains, and most of them run continuous stirred-tank or plug-flow reactors.

Brazil adds 0.85 points. StoneX reports that Brazil ran on B15 from August 2025 and that national biodiesel capacity reached [42.6 thousand cubic metres a day](https://www.stonex.com/pt-br/sala-de-imprensa/press-releases/producao-de-biodiesel-no-brasil-foi-recorde-em-2025-e-setor-deve-crescer-em-2026/) in 2025. It projects capacity use of only 57% to 64.5% in 2026, so Brazilian money goes less into greenfield plants and more into reactor upgrades that let soy-oil plants take tallow and acid oils. Douglas Insights counts that shift in 41 retrofit orders a year in Latin America.

Waste feedstock adds 0.60 points. Used cooking oil and animal fats carry free fatty acids that ruin a base-catalysed reactor, so plants add acid esterification or switch to heterogeneous catalysts. The 6 August 2026 SimplEster agreement between CPM Crown and Inventure Renewables targets exactly this [feedstock flexibility](https://onecpm.com/news/new-partnership-brings-simplester-technology-to-biodiesel-producers-worldwide). BDI's RetroFit programme sells the same idea, and its reference plants include a 100,000 tonne-a-year multi-feedstock site in Hong Kong.

Carbon credits add 0.30 points. The United States clean fuel production credit under section 45Z rewards low-intensity fuel sold through 31 December 2029, and the European Union's revised Renewable Energy Directive, [Directive (EU) 2023/2413](https://eur-lex.europa.eu/eli/dir/2023/2413/oj), in force since 20 November 2023, pushes member states toward waste-based biofuels. Both favour biodiesel reactor upgrades over new soybean or rapeseed lines.

Added together, Indonesia's 1.35 points, Brazil's 0.85, waste feedstock's 0.60 and credits' 0.30 make the 3.10% volume leg, which carries biodiesel reactor shipments from 438 systems in 2025 to 594 in 2035. Price adds 1.72 points on top. Most of that comes from alloy steel in acid-esterification stages and from heavier automation packages that lenders now ask for on every new train.

## Which hurdles keep biodiesel reactor orders below the faster path?

Three hurdles remove 1.30 points from biodiesel reactor shipment growth, the gap between our 3.10% base and the 4.40% faster case. Renewable diesel hydrotreating, idle American plants and volatile feedstock margins each delay reactor orders even where blend mandates rise.

Renewable diesel removes 0.60 points. Hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) plants use hydrogen and catalyst beds, not transesterification reactors, so every refinery conversion to HVO takes oil and fat supply away from FAME biodiesel. The European Biodiesel Board puts total EU production of FAME, HVO and hydroprocessed esters at nearly 14 million tonnes in 2024, while its members produced roughly 6.9 million tonnes of FAME in 2025, down 3%.

Spare capacity removes 0.40 points. The EIA counts [48 United States biodiesel plants](https://www.eia.gov/biofuels/biodiesel/capacity/) with 1.99 billion gallons a year of capacity as of 1 January 2025, with 28 of them and 1.42 billion gallons in the Midwest. A sector with that much nameplate rarely orders new reactors; it fixes old ones.

Margins remove 0.30 points. Soybean oil is the main Brazilian feedstock in the StoneX outlook, which puts 2025 soybean oil consumption at [7.9 million tonnes](https://www.stonex.com/pt-br/sala-de-imprensa/press-releases/producao-de-biodiesel-no-brasil-foi-recorde-em-2025-e-setor-deve-crescer-em-2026/), so a price spike shrinks the spread that pays for a new reactor train. Producers then wait a season.

## Where is biodiesel reactor spending heading, and which region grows fastest?

Asia Pacific leads biodiesel reactor spending with USD 123.5 million in 2025, a 34.7% share, and also grows fastest at 6.1% a year to USD 223.3 million by 2035. Palm-based blending led by Indonesia's B40 keeps greenfield trains on order.

| Region | 2025 | 2026 | 2035 | Growth |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Asia Pacific | USD 123.5 million | USD 131.0 million | USD 223.3 million | 6.1% |
| Europe | USD 93.6 million | USD 96.6 million | USD 128.3 million | 3.2% |
| Latin America | USD 69.7 million | USD 73.6 million | USD 120.2 million | 5.6% |
| North America | USD 50.5 million | USD 52.3 million | USD 71.2 million | 3.5% |
| Middle East and Africa | USD 18.5 million | USD 19.4 million | USD 29.6 million | 4.81% |

Europe follows with USD 93.6 million, 26.3% of the total, and grows 3.2% as producers retrofit rapeseed lines for used cooking oil under the waste-feedstock rules. Latin America holds USD 69.7 million, or 19.6%, rising 5.6% a year on Brazilian reactor upgrades. North America carries USD 50.5 million, 14.2%, growing 3.5% because spare capacity caps new builds.

The Middle East and Africa is the wildcard at USD 18.5 million, a 5.2% share, growing 4.81% a year to USD 29.6 million. The installed biodiesel reactor base is small, so one 100,000-tonne order would lift the region well above trend.

## How much does a transesterification reactor train cost per tonne of capacity?

Biodiesel reactor systems sold for an average USD 812,400 in 2025, and Douglas Insights reckons yearly price growth of 1.72% lifts that to about USD 963,000 by 2035. Prices rise with stainless and alloy content, acid-oil pre-treatment and automation, not with throughput alone.

Realised prices fall into three bands. Small inline ultrasonic or cavitation packages for plants of 0.25 to 8 tons an hour sell for USD 60,000 to USD 250,000. Mid-scale continuous trains for 30,000 to 60,000 tonne-a-year plants fetch USD 0.6 million to USD 1.4 million. Two-stage stirred-tank trains for plants above 100,000 tonnes a year run from USD 1.5 million to USD 3.8 million, before separators, methanol recovery and glycerin refining.

Per tonne of yearly capacity, that works out to roughly USD 15 to USD 25 for large continuous trains and USD 30 to USD 45 for small skid units. Retrofit reactors for waste fats cost 20% to 35% more per tonne than virgin-oil designs because acid esterification needs corrosion-resistant steel. Douglas Insights treats these bands as estimates drawn from the system counts in our model, not quoted list prices.

## Does used cooking oil change biodiesel reactor design, and which feedstock grows fastest?

Virgin vegetable oils still feed plants that bought 61.8% of 2025 biodiesel reactor value, but used cooking oil and animal fats, at 29.5%, grow about twice as fast. High free fatty acid content forces an acid esterification step before the main reactor.

Virgin vegetable oils, mainly palm, soybean and rapeseed, suit single-step alkaline transesterification in stirred tanks. Used cooking oil and animal fats carry free fatty acids that form soap with a base catalyst, so plants add an acid pre-esterification reactor or use solid catalysts. Acid oils and fatty acid distillates, the remaining 8.7%, need the same step at higher temperature. ASTM D6751, the American specification for biodiesel blendstock (B100), lists six grades, including S15 and S500, and the reactor must hit those limits whatever the feed.

## Are new-build plants or retrofits and expansions the bigger reactor opportunity?

New-build plants account for 57.3% of 2025 biodiesel reactor revenue, about USD 203.9 million, but retrofits and expansions, at 42.7%, gain share every year to 2035. Mandate steps in Asia fund greenfield trains, while Brazil, Europe and the United States mostly convert lines.

Retrofits and expansions cost less per tonne and keep existing permits. BDI's reference list shows the pattern: a 33,000 tonne-a-year retrofit in Greece and a 48,000 tonne-a-year conversion in Eastern Europe. Douglas Insights tallies 187 retrofit reactor systems among the 438 shipped in 2025, against 251 for new-build plants.

## Will renewable diesel hydrotreaters displace FAME biodiesel reactors?

Hydrotreaters take feedstock, not the whole biodiesel reactor market: FAME keeps 6.9 million tonnes of European member output and mandates in Indonesia and Brazil specify biodiesel. Renewable diesel costs the reactor market 0.60 points of yearly growth, not its base.

HVO units are refinery projects that need [hydrogen](https://www.douglasinsights.com/hydrogen-market/) supply. In palm and soy economies, a 10-point blend step is cheaper to meet with a 100,000-tonne FAME plant. Our [Bioenergy Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/bioenergy-market/) study tracks the wider fuel mix, and the [Algae Biofuel Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/algae-biofuel-market/) report covers a feedstock that could one day reach both routes.

## Which fuel standards and blending rules shape biodiesel reactor design?

Three rule sets decide what a biodiesel reactor must deliver in 2025: ASTM D6751 for B100 in America, the European Union's waste-feedstock rules and the B40 and B15 blends. Each sets ester quality or feedstock limits that fix reactor stages, catalyst choice and residence time.

ASTM D6751-24 covers fatty acid mono-alkyl esters made from vegetable oils and animal fats, in grades S15 and S500. Europe's Renewable Energy Directive, [Directive (EU) 2023/2413](https://eur-lex.europa.eu/eli/dir/2023/2413/oj), dated 18 October 2023, entered into force on 20 November 2023 and tightens sustainability proof for each tonne of feedstock. The United States 45Z credit runs to the end of 2029 and pays more for lower-carbon fuel, which favours waste-fat biodiesel reactor lines.

## How does the 2035 biodiesel reactor scenario change if Indonesia's B50 slips?

Our base case reaches USD 572.6 million by 2035 on 3.10% volume and 1.72% price growth. A B50 delay and weak margins give a slower USD 483.9 million; quick mandate steps give a faster USD 673.7 million for biodiesel reactor suppliers.

The slower case uses 1.9% volume growth and 1.2% price growth: Indonesia holds at B40, Brazil stays at B15, and renewable diesel absorbs most new waste fat. The faster case uses 4.4% volume growth and 2.1% price growth: B50 arrives, Brazil adds B16, and the 6 August 2026 CPM Crown and Inventure deal spreads waste-fat retrofits.

A single extra point of yearly shipment growth adds about USD 58.0 million to the 2035 biodiesel reactor value. Outside forecasts we reviewed sit between 5.5% and 7.92% a year; our 4.87% is lower because at least one bundles all biofuel processing equipment, including renewable diesel kit.

## Douglas Exclusive: the Biodiesel Reactor Mandate Calendar

The Biodiesel Reactor Mandate Calendar is a Douglas Insights model built from 14 sourced inputs: blend dates, plant counts, capacities and company moves. It maps each policy or company date to the reactor orders it releases, with a lag of 9 to 18 months from decision to shipment.

| Date | Event | Modelled biodiesel reactor systems |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 20 November 2023 | EU Directive 2023/2413 in force | 22 retrofit systems in Europe, 2025 to 2027 |
| 1 January 2025 | Indonesia B40 compulsory | 96 systems in Indonesia in 2025 |
| August 2025 | Brazil moves to B15 | 41 retrofit systems a year in Latin America |
| 6 August 2026 | CPM Crown and Inventure SimplEster deal | 18 waste-fat licences by 2028 |
| 2026, planned | Indonesia B50 | 71 systems in the faster case, 2027 to 2028 |
| 31 December 2029 | United States 45Z credit sunset | Order pull-forward of 15 systems into 2028 |

The calendar finds that dated policy steps explain 61% of modelled 2025 to 2028 shipments. Indonesia alone accounts for 96 of the 438 systems shipped in 2025, tied to its [B40 rollout](https://esdm.go.id/en/media-center/news-archives/wujudkan-ketahanan-energi-dan-kurangi-impor-menteri-esdm-mandatori-b40-berlaku-1-januari-2025), and a B50 slip is the largest single risk in the calendar.

## Methodology: how did 438 reactor shipments become the 2025 biodiesel reactor total?

The 2025 biodiesel reactor figure is 438 systems times USD 812,400, which equals USD 355.8 million. We counted reactor shipments across 23 countries, using 14 sourced inputs and 61 company and plant data points. Prices come from three realised bands weighted by system count.

The 438 systems split into 251 for new-build plants and 187 retrofits. Five regional builds sum to the global total in 2025 and 2035. Cross-check one: the five reactor-type builds sum to USD 575.9 million in 2035 against the USD 572.6 million volume times price result, a 0.58% gap. Cross-check two: our 2025 total equals 55.2% of an outside USD 644 million figure for reactors across all biofuels, which fits FAME holding just over half of liquid biofuel reactor spending. Cross-check three: the Asia Pacific value of USD 123.5 million equals 152 systems at the average price, and Indonesia's modelled 96 systems are 63% of that. Other studies in this vertical, such as the [Anaerobic Digestion Biogas Plants Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/anaerobic-digestion-biogas-plants-market/), use the same unit times price structure.
