## Key takeaways

- Composite decking and railing generates USD 5.13 billion in 2025: 77.4 million square metres at USD 66.3 each.
- The base case reaches USD 10.17 billion by 2035, a 7.08% CAGR from 5.6% volume and 1.4% price growth.
- Capped wood-plastic composite decking holds 43.7%, while composite and aluminum railing systems grow fastest at 9.1% a year.
- North America holds 63.2% of 2025 value; Asia Pacific grows fastest at 9.8% a year.
- Trex leads with about 22.9% and the top three hold about 49.3%, Douglas Insights estimates.

A Trex deck board is 95% reclaimed wood fibre and recycled polyethylene film, extruded to profile and wrapped in a protective polymer shell against fading, staining and mould, as the company describes it in its [2025 annual report on Form 10-K](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1069878/000119312526068732/trex-20251231.htm). Composite decking and railing comprises those wood-alternative deck boards plus the guards, handrails, balusters and trim sold with them; the Composite Decking and Railing market covers capped and uncapped wood-plastic composite (WPC), cellular polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and mineral-based boards, composite and aluminum railing systems and accessories, valued at manufacturer prices. At 77.4 million square metres of deck surface and USD 66.3 per square metre, 2025 revenue comes to USD 5.13 billion. Douglas Insights forecasts USD 10.17 billion by 2035, a revenue compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 7.08%, from 5.6% volume growth and 1.4% price growth. Capacity is being bought, not only built: on 6 April 2026 [UFP Industries acquired the MoistureShield decking assets of Oldcastle APG](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/912767/000091276726000013/ufpi-20260406xex99d1.htm), a step it says could double Deckorators WPC capacity to USD 200 million by 2027. The study belongs to our [construction materials](https://www.douglasinsights.com/industry/chemicals-materials/construction-materials/) coverage and follows the [Douglas Insights research methodology](https://www.douglasinsights.com/research-methodology/).

## Why are homeowners swapping pressure-treated lumber for composite decking boards and railing?

Composite decking and railing volume grows 5.6% a year to 2035 because three forces add square metres. Conversion from wood decks adds 2.7 points, railing attached to each deck adds 1.6 points and new producer capacity adds 1.3 points, mostly in remodelling.

### Wood conversion adds 2.7 points

Lumber still owns the deck. Trex states in its 10-K that wood products constitute a substantial majority of decking and railing sales measured by linear feet, which leaves composite decking a large pool to convert. Trex estimates its 2025 sell-through grew about 4% while the repair and remodel market was flat, a gap that is pure share taken from wood, according to its [fourth-quarter results of 24 February 2026](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1069878/000119312526066985/trex-ex99_1.htm). James Hardie told investors its decking growth strategy rests on material conversion from wood, share gains and product innovation. Douglas Insights puts the wood conversion effect at 2.7 points of yearly volume growth, the largest single driver.

### Railing attachment adds 1.6 points

Every composite deck above grade needs a guard. Trex reports that its railing sales grew at a significant double-digit rate in 2025, expects double-digit railing growth again in 2026 and aims to double its railing market share by the end of 2028. Railing adds revenue per deck without needing a new customer, so composite railing growth lifts square-metre equivalents faster than board shipments. Douglas Insights estimates railing attachment contributes 1.6 points of the 5.6% volume leg. Railing also travels with stairs and raised platforms, the deck formats where composite boards win most often against wood, so the two products rise together. In our model, a remodeller who replaces 30 square metres of boards on a raised deck also replaces the guard at the same visit, which is why railing carries 23.4% of 2025 value.

### Capacity and recycled feedstock add 1.3 points

Supply is expanding on three campuses. Trex began processing scrap polyethylene at its third site in Little Rock, Arkansas, in 2025 and expects decking production there to start in 2027, after spending USD 223.6 million on property, plant and equipment in 2025. UFP says the MoistureShield purchase plus planned investment could double Deckorators WPC capacity to USD 200 million by 2027. New lines shorten freight to the South and West, where outdoor living seasons run longest. The three contributions, 2.7, 1.6 and 1.3 points, add to the 5.6% composite decking volume leg.

## Which headwinds slow composite decking and railing when fewer new homes get a deck?

Three restraints remove about 2.1 points from composite decking and railing volume growth each year. Thinner new-home deck counts and flat remodelling take 0.9 points, the price gap to treated lumber 0.8 points and heat and warranty exposure 0.4 points; without them, volume would rise near 7.7%.

New construction and remodelling remove 0.9 points. The [Census Bureau](https://www.census.gov/construction/chars/highlights.html) counts 1,005,000 single-family homes completed in 2025, and about 17.4% of new homes completed in 2024 had a deck, a record low in Survey of Construction data as tabulated by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB). Trex expects the repair and remodel market to be roughly flat in 2026, so composite decking growth must come from conversion rather than a rising tide.

The upfront premium removes 0.8 points. Douglas Insights models a composite deck at a clear upfront premium over a pressure-treated pine deck at the shelf, and James Hardie argues its products are a more cost-effective alternative only over time. Price-sensitive buyers at big-box retailers defer, especially when mortgage rates keep home equity locked.

Heat and warranty claims remove 0.4 points. Trex added USD 6.0 million to its warranty reserve in the fourth quarter of 2025, which helped pull quarterly gross margin to 30.2% from 42.3%. Surface heat is the other complaint: UFP describes the CoolDeck composite decking technology it bought as designed to absorb less heat than standard composite decking.

## Which composite decking product makes the money: capped WPC boards, PVC boards or railing systems?

Capped wood-plastic composite decking leads the Composite Decking and Railing market with 43.7% of 2025 value, or USD 2.24 billion, because shell-wrapped boards hit the price point most remodellers accept. Composite and aluminum railing systems grow fastest, at 9.1% a year.

| Composite decking and railing segment | Share 2025 | Value 2025 | Growth 2026-2035 | Value 2035 |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Capped wood-plastic composite decking | 43.7% | USD 2.24 billion | 6.4% | USD 4.17 billion |
| Cellular PVC decking | 16.9% | USD 867.2 million | 7.3% | USD 1.75 billion |
| Uncapped and mineral-based composite decking | 7.6% | USD 390.0 million | 4.1% | USD 582.9 million |
| Composite and aluminum railing systems | 23.4% | USD 1.20 billion | 9.1% | USD 2.87 billion |
| Fascia, stair and deck accessories | 8.4% | USD 431.1 million | 6.2% | USD 786.7 million |

Capped wood-plastic composite decking holds USD 2.24 billion because recycled wood fibre and polyethylene give a stiff, low-cost core and the polymer cap carries the colour, and it grows 6.4% a year to USD 4.17 billion. Cellular PVC decking is worth USD 867.2 million, a 16.9% share, priced above WPC for its lighter weight and moisture resistance near pools and docks; it grows 7.3% a year. Uncapped and mineral-based composite decking carries USD 390.0 million and grows slowest, at 4.1%, as uncapped boards fade from the range while mineral boards such as Deckorators Surestone hold a niche.

Composite and aluminum railing systems total USD 1.20 billion in 2025 and are the fastest-growing segment at 9.1% a year, reaching USD 2.87 billion by 2035, because producers are pushing guards onto every deck order they already win. Fascia, stair and deck accessories add USD 431.1 million, an 8.4% share growing 6.2% a year, riding on board volume. Douglas Insights reckons 81.6% of 2025 composite decking value sells into repair and remodel projects and 18.4% into new homes.

## Where does composite decking and railing revenue concentrate, and where is Asia Pacific catching up?

North America holds USD 3.24 billion of 2025 composite decking and railing revenue, 63.2% of the total, because the wood-alternative deck was born there. Asia Pacific grows fastest, at 9.8% a year, from USD 774.9 million to USD 1.97 billion by 2035.

North America reaches USD 6.15 billion by 2035 at 6.6% a year, supported by more than 6,700 retail locations stocking Trex alone and by both large producers selling mainly into the United States and Canada. Europe accounts for USD 785.1 million and grows 6.0% a year to USD 1.41 billion; terrace boards there lean on recycled feedstock, as with UPM ProFi, which takes 55% to 75% of its raw material from label production side streams. Asia Pacific starts at USD 774.9 million and is fastest at 9.8%, as Chinese WPC extrusion serves both home building and export, and Australian outdoor living adds premium demand.

Latin America is the wildcard at USD 174.5 million, growing 8.7% a year to USD 401.9 million if coastal resort building swaps tropical hardwood for composite decking. Middle East and Africa is the smallest region at USD 153.9 million and grows 4.63% a year to USD 242.0 million, held back by UV loads that punish uncapped boards and by limited local extrusion.

## Which companies supply composite decking and railing now that James Hardie owns AZEK?

Douglas Insights estimates Trex leads with about 22.9% of 2025 composite decking and railing value, James Hardie's TimberTech holds about 20.6%, and the top three, adding Fiberon, hold about 49.3%. Only Trex reports decking revenue as a whole company, so the rest is modelled.

Trex booked net sales of USD 1.17 billion in 2025, up 2.0% from USD 1.15 billion, with gross margin of 39.2%, and says industry studies give it the leading share of the wood-alternative segment. James Hardie became the second pole when it [completed its acquisition of AZEK on 1 July 2025](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1159152/000119312525154175/d68606dex991.htm), at an implied value of about USD 8.4 billion. Its Deck, Rail and Accessories segment, sold as TimberTech, reported USD 795.2 million in the nine months to March 2026 at a 28.3% adjusted EBITDA margin and guides to USD 1.11 billion to USD 1.15 billion for the year to March 2027.

| Company | Composite decking and railing position built on | Disclosed figure |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Trex | Recycled-content WPC boards, aluminum and composite railing | USD 1.17 billion 2025 net sales |
| James Hardie (TimberTech, ex-AZEK) | Capped composite and PVC decking, railing, pergolas | USD 795.2 million in nine months to March 2026 |
| Fortune Brands Innovations (Fiberon) | Composite decking, railing and cladding in its Outdoors segment | Home Depot and Lowe's about 28% of segment sales |
| UFP Industries (Deckorators) | WPC and Surestone mineral-based decking, aluminum railing | About 6% to 8% of US composite decking and railing |
| Oldcastle APG | RDI railing, retained after the MoistureShield sale | Decking assets sold to UFP, 6 April 2026 |
| UPM (ProFi) | WPC decking from label production side streams | About 10 kg of label waste per square metre |

Fortune Brands sells Fiberon composite decking, railing and cladding through 12 Outdoors segment plants and names Trex and James Hardie among its competitors. UFP estimates it makes about 6% to 8% of all composite decking and railing in the US, which Douglas Insights converts to about 4.1% of global value. Oldcastle APG kept its RDI railing brand when it sold MoistureShield. UPM ProFi gives Europe a large-company supplier built on recycled label material.

## How much do composite decking boards and railing cost per square metre at the mill gate?

Composite decking and railing averaged USD 66.3 per square metre of deck surface at manufacturer prices in 2025, including the railing and accessories sold with it, and Douglas Insights calculates USD 76.2 by 2035. Board-only bands run from about USD 35 to above USD 95.

| Composite decking tier | What the buyer gets | Manufacturer price per square metre | Basis |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Uncapped or entry composite | Basic WPC board, short warranty | USD 35 to 48 | Douglas Insights estimate |
| Capped WPC mid-range | Polymer shell, wood-grain colours | USD 48 to 72 | Douglas Insights estimate |
| Premium capped or cellular PVC | Lighter board, cooler or denser surface | USD 72 to 95 plus | Douglas Insights estimate |
| Deck with railing and accessories | Boards plus guards, fascia and fasteners | USD 66.3 blended | Douglas Insights model |

Board geometry sets the arithmetic. A standard 5.5-inch board laid with a small gap needs about 22.7 linear feet per square metre, so every USD 0.10 per linear foot at the mill moves the composite decking board price by about USD 2.27 per square metre. Railing lifts the blended figure because a guard run on a raised deck can carry a value close to the boards it surrounds.

Price per square metre rises only 1.4% a year. Recycled polyethylene and wood fibre are cheap inputs, Trex and TimberTech compete hard on promotional programmes, and the mix shift toward railing adds value while entry boards fight treated lumber at big-box shelves.

## Which fire codes and ASTM D7032 standards must composite deck boards and guards pass?

Composite deck boards, stair treads and guards are rated under ASTM D7032, which treats them as combustible and tests flexural strength, creep, UV, freeze-thaw and flame spread. In California wildfire zones, decking also needs a State Fire Marshal listing under Standard 12-7A-4.

ASTM D7032-21 sets performance ratings for wood-plastic composite and plastic lumber deck boards, stair treads, guards and handrails, and gives building codes a basis for recognising them where combustible construction is allowed. Guards and handrails also face concentrated load tests. For buyers in the wildland-urban interface (WUI), the [California State Fire Marshal listed products handbook](https://cdnverify.frap.fire.ca.gov/media/nzdbcsgn/2023-sfm-wui-listed-products-handbook-3-29-2023.pdf) reviews decking against Chapter 7A of the California Building Code under listing category 8110. Douglas Insights counts 13 decking listings for the four largest composite brands in the 2023 edition: 2 for Trex, 4 for TimberTech, 4 for Fiberon and 3 for Deckorators.

The consequence is that composite decking without a listing cannot be sold into a growing share of California rebuilds. Each new listing therefore widens the addressable market for a composite decking and railing brand more than a new colour does.

## How do recycled polyethylene film and wood fibre shape composite decking margins?

Recycled polyethylene film and reclaimed wood fibre make up 95% of a Trex composite decking board, so feedstock sourcing, not resin prices, decides margins. UPM uses about 10 kg of label waste per square metre of ProFi decking.

Trex buys reclaimed wood fibre mostly in North America under purchase orders and long-term commitments, and scrap polyethylene under contracts of about one year. Its railing lines also carry recycled content: Signature aluminum railing holds at least 40% and Enhance composite railing about 35%. When scrap film is cheap, composite decking margins widen; Trex's 2025 gross margin of 39.2% compares with 43.6% in 2024, a 4.4-point fall shared between warranty costs, start-up costs of USD 5.2 million at Arkansas and pricing.

Scale in recycling is a moat. A producer making 10 million square metres of ProFi-style boards would consume about 100,000 tonnes of label waste a year, a sourcing network that takes years to build. Readers tracking the timber side of the trade will find it in our [Wood Product Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/wood-product-market/) and engineered beams in the [Laminated Veneer Lumber Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/laminated-veneer-lumber-market/).

## Which buyers install composite decking and railing: remodelling homeowners, builders or commercial owners?

Douglas Insights estimates repair and remodel projects take 81.6% of 2025 composite decking and railing value and new homes 18.4%. Remodellers dominate because the stock of ageing wood decks is far larger than yearly new-home deck additions, which keep falling.

Pro contractors buy through two-step distribution, where Trex typically appoints two to three exclusive distributors per area. Do-it-yourself buyers lean on big-box retail: The Home Depot and Lowe's together take about 28% of Fortune Brands Outdoors segment sales. Commercial owners such as hotels, marinas and multifamily developers specify cellular PVC and aluminum railing for pool decks and balconies. Aluminum guard profiles link to our [Aluminum Extrusion Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/aluminum-extrusion-market/).

## Composite decking forecast to 2035: what scenario follows if remodelling stays flat or wildfire codes spread?

In the base case composite decking and railing revenue reaches USD 10.17 billion in 2035. A slower case lands at USD 7.76 billion, a 4.23% CAGR, and a faster case at USD 12.77 billion, a 9.55% CAGR, a USD 5.01 billion spread.

The slower case runs volume at 3.4% and price at 0.8%: repair and remodel spending stays flat beyond Trex's 2026 guidance, the share of new homes with decks keeps sliding below 17.4% and promotions erode price. The faster case runs volume at 7.4% and price at 2.0%: the three restraints fade, wildfire codes like California's Chapter 7A spread to other western states, and capacity like UFP's 6 April 2026 MoistureShield purchase and the Arkansas Trex line arrives on time in 2027.

Volume is the lever that matters. Adding one point to yearly square-metre growth lifts the 2035 composite decking total by about USD 1.01 billion; subtracting one point lowers it by about USD 922.9 million. Outside forecasts we read run from 8.1% to 16.4% a year; our 7.08% sits below that band because we value boards at manufacturer prices, not installed or retail prices.

## Douglas Exclusive: the Composite Decking Producer Capacity Ledger

The Composite Decking Producer Capacity Ledger is a Douglas Insights model built from 14 disclosed inputs in 7 primary documents, not an official register. It records, for each named composite decking and railing producer, the revenue, share, capacity and listing lines that the company itself has published.

| Producer | Revenue line | Capacity or share line | Fire listings (CA 8110) | Ledger value 2025 |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Trex | USD 1.17 billion net sales, 2025 | Third plant, decking from 2027; USD 223.6 million capex | 2 | USD 1.17 billion reported |
| James Hardie (TimberTech) | USD 795.2 million, nine months to March 2026 | Guide USD 1.11 to 1.15 billion, year to March 2027 | 4 | USD 1.06 billion estimated |
| UFP (Deckorators) | Not disclosed | 6% to 8% US share; WPC capacity to USD 200 million by 2027 | 3 | USD 210.4 million estimated |
| Fortune Brands (Fiberon) | Not disclosed | 12 Outdoors plants | 4 | Not in ledger total |

The ledger's three valued rows sum to USD 2.44 billion, 47.6% of 2025 composite decking and railing value. The finding is about capacity, not share: our model adds USD 752.4 million of market revenue between 2025 and 2027, while the only quantified new capacity in the documents, Deckorators' doubling, covers roughly USD 100 million of it. The rest must come from higher utilisation and the Arkansas Trex line, which makes 2027 the year supply could tighten.

## Composite decking methodology: how the model turns 77.4 million square metres into USD 5.13 billion?

Our model multiplies 77.4 million square metres of composite deck surface by USD 66.3 per square metre, including railing and accessories, to reach USD 5.13 billion in 2025. Volume then grows 5.6% a year to 133.47 million square metres in 2035.

At USD 76.2 per square metre in 2035, the result is USD 10.17 billion; the 2026 value is USD 5.49 billion. The model covers 5 regions, 5 product segments and 2 end-use channels. Regional values sum exactly to the global total in 2025 and 2035; segment values sum exactly in 2025 and within 0.06% in 2035.

Three cross-checks were run. Trex's USD 1.17 billion of 2025 net sales over a 22.9% modelled share implies the same USD 5.13 billion total. UFP's 6% to 8% US share at about USD 210.4 million implies a US market of USD 2.63 billion to USD 3.51 billion, bracketing our North American USD 3.24 billion. Our 7.08% CAGR sits 5.17 points below the 12.25% midpoint of published ranges.
