## Which CT scanner class earns the most: 128-slice, spectral or photon-counting?

128 to 256-slice scanners earn the most, 42.0% of 2025 value or about USD 4.62 billion, Douglas Insights estimates. Photon-counting CT grows fastest, 16.0% a year from USD 661 million to USD 2.91 billion by 2035.

| Scanner class | Share 2025 | Value 2025 | CAGR 2026-2035 | Value 2035 |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Up to 64-slice | 30.0% | USD 3.30 billion | 0.8% | USD 3.58 billion |
| 128 to 256-slice | 42.0% | USD 4.62 billion | 3.8% | USD 6.71 billion |
| Spectral and dual-source | 18.0% | USD 1.98 billion | 7.6% | USD 4.12 billion |
| Photon-counting | 6.0% | USD 661 million | 16.0% | USD 2.91 billion |
| Mobile and specialty | 4.0% | USD 440 million | 5.6% | USD 759 million |

The 128 to 256-slice class leads because it is the workhorse for cardiac, stroke and trauma scanning in tertiary hospitals, and most Chinese and Indian tenders now ask for it. Up to 64-slice scanners, USD 3.30 billion, still sell in volume to county hospitals and emerging markets but grow only 0.8% a year as buyers trade up. Spectral and dual-source scanners, USD 1.98 billion, grow 7.6%; Philips' Verida detector-based spectral CT, rated at up to 145 images a second and 270 exams a day, gained FDA clearance, [Applied Radiology reported on 16 April 2026](https://www.appliedradiology.com/news/philips-verida-spectral-ct-receives-fda-clearance).

Photon-counting CT, USD 661 million, grows fastest. The FDA cleared Siemens Healthineers' NAEOTOM Alpha.Pro dual-source and Alpha.Prime single-source photon-counting systems, and the original Alpha was renamed Alpha.Peak, [Applied Radiology reported on 13 March 2025](https://www.appliedradiology.com/news/fda-clears-new-photon-counting-ct-systems-from-siemens-healthineers); Neusoft Medical's NeuViz P10 became China's first approved photon-counting CT, [Applied Radiology reported on 28 August 2025](https://www.appliedradiology.com/news/neusoft-wins-first-china-approval-for-photon-counting-ct-launches-neuviz-p10). Mobile and specialty scanners, USD 440 million, grow 5.6%. Class values for 2035 sum to USD 18.08 billion, 0.61% below the headline.

## Who buys CT scanners: hospitals, imaging centres or ambulatory sites?

Hospitals buy the most CT scanners, 72.0% of 2025 value or about USD 7.93 billion, Douglas Insights estimates. Ambulatory and other sites grow fastest, 5.8% a year to USD 1.55 billion by 2035, as community diagnostic centres add scanners.

| End user | Share 2025 | Value 2025 | CAGR 2026-2035 | Value 2035 |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Hospitals | 72.0% | USD 7.93 billion | 5.0% | USD 12.91 billion |
| Diagnostic imaging centres | 20.0% | USD 2.20 billion | 5.6% | USD 3.80 billion |
| Ambulatory and other | 8.0% | USD 881 million | 5.8% | USD 1.55 billion |

Hospitals lead because emergency departments, cancer centres and inpatient wards depend on CT around the clock, and public tenders such as Indonesia's are placed for state hospitals. GE HealthCare will supply more than 300 CT scanners to state hospitals in all 38 Indonesian provinces, installed by 2028, its [release of 16 December 2025](https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20251216956209/en/GE-HealthCare-and-Indonesias-Ministry-of-Health-to-expand-access-to-quality-care-through-the-provision-of-300-advanced-CT-scanners) states. Hospital value grows 5.0% a year to USD 12.91 billion.

Diagnostic imaging centres, USD 2.20 billion, grow 5.6% to USD 3.80 billion on outpatient oncology and lung screening work. Ambulatory and other sites, USD 881 million, grow fastest: the UK government committed GBP 237 million to 36 community diagnostic centres, 4 new and 32 expanded, with equipment including CT scanners, its [announcement of 13 April 2026](https://gov.uk/government/news/nhs-patients-to-get-quicker-tests-and-scans-closer-to-home) states. End-user values for 2035 sum to USD 18.25 billion, 0.32% above the headline.

## What drives CT scanner demand: exam volumes, public capacity plans or replacement?

CT scanner unit sales rise 3.6% a year in our base case, from about 17,200 in 2025 to about 24,500 in 2035. Four drivers add 4.80 points of gross growth; restraints remove 1.20 points.

### Rising CT exam volumes: 1.40 points

Scan demand is the largest driver, worth 1.40 points. The NHS in England performed 8,798,935 CT tests in the 12 months to March 2026, out of 50,843,970 imaging tests, its [Diagnostic Imaging Dataset release of 23 July 2026](https://www.england.nhs.uk/statistics/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2026/07/Statistical-Release-23rd-July-2026.pdf) shows, against 8,291,725 a year earlier in the [24 July 2025 release](https://www.england.nhs.uk/statistics/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2025/07/Statistical-Release-24th-July-2025.pdf), a rise of 6.1%. In the United States, 93 million CT exams were performed on about 61.5 million patients in 2023, a study in [JAMA Internal Medicine published on 14 April 2025](https://physicians.radiology.ca/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/JAMA.pdf) found. Douglas Insights estimates each extra 10,000 annual exams in a mature system needs about 1.5 more scanners.

### Public capacity programmes: 1.30 points

Government plans add 1.30 points. China's State Council told sectors including healthcare to raise equipment investment more than 25% above 2023 levels by 2027 and backed hospital equipment upgrades in its [renewal action plan of 13 March 2024](https://english.www.gov.cn/policies/latestreleases/202403/13/content_WS65f19f27c6d0868f4e8e50e2.html). England counted 757 operational CT scanners in March 2025, up from 675 in March 2023, against a pledge to double CT and MRI scanners to about 2,700 by 2029, the [Full Fact tracker updated on 8 June 2026](https://fullfact.org/government-tracker/double-mri-ct-scanners/) shows. The 300-unit Indonesian order alone is about 100 scanners a year to 2028, a Douglas Insights estimate.

### Replacing an ageing installed base: 1.10 points

Replacement adds 1.10 points. Japan ran 14,898 CT scanners, 119.81 per million people, in 2023, and the United States 14,150, 42.61 per million, in 2021, [OECD Health Statistics](https://sdmx.oecd.org/public/rest/data/OECD.ELS.HD,DSD_HEALTH_REAC_HOSP@DF_MED_TECH,1.1/all) show. China added nearly 5,000 CT units a year on average in 2022 to 2024, and 2025 public tenders covered 3,133 units, VCBeat's research unit reported via [Pedaily on 21 May 2026](https://news.pedaily.cn/20260521/130328.shtml). Douglas Insights estimates a scanner is replaced after 8 to 10 years, so an installed base of roughly 75,000 to 80,000 units implies about 8,500 replacements a year.

### Spectral and photon-counting upgrades: 1.00 point

Technology upgrades add the last 1.00 point. More than 2 million patients had been scanned on Siemens Healthineers photon-counting CT since 2021, and University Hospitals Cleveland was the first US system to install an Alpha.Pro, [ITN reported on 5 September 2025](https://www.itnonline.com/node/90715). GE HealthCare's Photonova Spectra uses a deep silicon detector with 8 energy bins and a 0.23-second rotation, its [23 March 2026 release](https://investor.gehealthcare.com/news-releases/news-release-details/ge-healthcares-photonova-spectra-photon-counting-ct-receives-fda) states. Summed, 1.40 + 1.30 + 1.10 + 1.00 = 4.80 points, a Douglas Insights estimate.

## What holds CT scanner sales back: Chinese price cuts or tariff and budget pressure?

Two restraints remove 1.20 points a year from CT unit growth: lower Chinese exam fees and tender counts take 0.60 points, and US tariff risk and slower hospital budgets take 0.60 points.

China is the heavier drag because it is the largest single buyer. Under the National Healthcare Security Administration's radiology pricing guideline, CT exam fees in some provinces fell from over RMB 300 to about RMB 200, [Xinhua reported on 22 May 2025](https://www.news.cn/fortune/20250522/d6b495f739ac4859a104431b46c7723b/c.html), which cuts the payback on a new scanner. Tendered units of 3,133 in 2025 compare with nearly 5,000 a year in 2022 to 2024, the [21 May 2026 Pedaily report](https://news.pedaily.cn/20260521/130328.shtml) shows, a fall of about 37%, Douglas Insights calculates.

Tariffs and budgets take 0.60 points. The US Commerce Department opened a Section 232 investigation into imported medical equipment that names "computed tomography scanners", its [Federal Register notice of 26 September 2025](https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/full_text/xml/2025/09/26/2025-18729.xml) shows. Siemens Healthineers cut its fiscal 2026 comparable revenue growth guidance to 3.5% to 4.0% from 4.5% to 5.0% and its Imaging revenue grew only 2.3% in the April to June quarter, its [results of 31 July 2026](https://corporate.webassets.siemens-healthineers.com/2637d4a46dbcd161/a3335cc16ed1/siemens-healthineers-Q3_FY2026_Earnings-Release-and-Financial-Results.pdf) show. Philips' Diagnosis and Treatment comparable sales were flat at EUR 2.09 billion in the third quarter of 2026, its [filing of 3 November 2026](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/0000313216/000162828026069119/a2026q3-philipsquarterlyen.htm) shows.

## Which region buys the most CT scanners, and where does demand grow fastest?

Asia Pacific buys the most CT scanners, USD 4.18 billion or 38.0% of 2025 value, led by China, Japan and India. The Middle East and Africa grow fastest, 6.6% a year to USD 1.04 billion by 2035.

| Region | Value 2025 | Share 2025 | Value 2026 | CAGR 2026-2035 | Value 2035 |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Asia Pacific | USD 4.18 billion | 38.0% | USD 4.43 billion | 6.0% | USD 7.49 billion |
| North America | USD 3.30 billion | 30.0% | USD 3.45 billion | 4.6% | USD 5.18 billion |
| Europe | USD 2.42 billion | 22.0% | USD 2.52 billion | 4.2% | USD 3.65 billion |
| Latin America | USD 550 million | 5.0% | USD 581 million | 5.6% | USD 949 million |
| Middle East and Africa | USD 550 million | 5.0% | USD 587 million | 6.6% | USD 1.04 billion |

Asia Pacific leads on sheer unit count. Japan has the densest fleet among [OECD](https://www.oecd.org/) members at 119.81 scanners per million people, Australia 80.03 in 2025 and Korea 46.67 in 2024, [OECD data](https://sdmx.oecd.org/public/rest/data/OECD.ELS.HD,DSD_HEALTH_REAC_HOSP@DF_MED_TECH,1.1/all) show, while United Imaging Healthcare grew 2025 revenue 33.98% to RMB 13.80 billion, its [annual results of 29 April 2026](https://en.prnasia.com/releases/global/united-imaging-healthcare-releases-2025-annual-report-and-q1-2026-results-delivering-strong-growth-with-accelerated-global-expansion-531290.shtml) show. Regional value grows 6.0% a year to USD 7.49 billion.

North America, USD 3.30 billion, grows 4.6% to USD 5.18 billion on replacement and outpatient growth. Europe, USD 2.42 billion, grows 4.2%; France had 21.85 scanners per million and the United Kingdom only 10.89 in 2025, the [OECD series](https://sdmx.oecd.org/public/rest/data/OECD.ELS.HD,DSD_HEALTH_REAC_HOSP@DF_MED_TECH,1.1/all) shows, leaving room for catch-up. Latin America, USD 550 million, grows 5.6%; Mexico had 7.23 scanners per million in 2024. The Middle East and Africa, USD 550 million, grow fastest on new hospital building. Regional values sum to USD 11.58 billion in 2026 and USD 18.32 billion in 2035, 0.66% above the headline.

## Which companies lead the CT scanners market?

Siemens Healthineers and GE HealthCare lead CT scanners with about 25% and 22% of 2025 value, Douglas Insights estimates, ahead of Philips and Canon Medical at about 13% each. The top five, adding United Imaging at about 9%, hold about 82%.

| Company | CT position | Latest reported figure | Source date |

Siemens Healthineers is the largest CT vendor. Its Imaging segment, which also sells MRI, X-ray and molecular imaging, earned adjusted revenue of EUR 13.18 billion in fiscal 2025, up from EUR 12.27 billion, [AuntMinnie reported on 5 November 2025](https://www.auntminnie.com/industry-news/market-analysis/news/15771068/siemens-healthineers-siemens-posts-revenue-growth-in-q4-fiscal-year-2025), and grew 10.0% on a comparable basis in the July to September 2026 quarter with a 21.9% adjusted margin, its [release of 5 November 2026](https://www.siemens-healthineers.com/press/releases/2026q4) states. GE HealthCare's Imaging segment earned USD 9.25 billion in 2025, up 3.8% organically, its [results of 4 February 2026](https://investor.gehealthcare.com/news-releases/news-release-details/ge-healthcare-reports-fourth-quarter-and-full-year-2025) show, and its Advanced Imaging Solutions segment grew 4.5% organically to USD 3.87 billion in the third quarter of 2026, its [8-K of 28 October 2026](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/0001932393/000193239326000058/release3q26earnings.htm) shows.

Philips' Diagnosis and Treatment unit sold EUR 8.53 billion in 2025, flat on a comparable basis, its [filing of 10 February 2026](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/313216/000162828026006653/a2025q4-philipsquarterlyen.htm) shows. Canon's medical unit sold JPY 580.6 billion in 2025, up 2.1%, and plans JPY 616.1 billion for 2026, its [results presentation of 29 January 2026](https://global.canon/en/ir/conference/pdf/conf2025e.pdf) shows. United Imaging grew overseas revenue 51.39% to RMB 3.43 billion in 2025 and 50.30% to RMB 3.00 billion in the first nine months of 2026, its [release of 29 October 2026](https://meddeviceguide.com/press-releases/united-imaging-healthcare-reports-19-43-revenue-growth-in-q1-q3-2026-with-international-revenue-up-50-30-20261029cn84352) shows. Neusoft, Fujifilm, Anke and regional builders share the remaining 18%, a Douglas Insights estimate.

## How much does a CT scanner cost, from a 16-slice unit to photon-counting?

A CT scanner sells for an average USD 640,000 in 2025, Douglas Insights estimates, from about USD 150,000 for an entry 16-slice unit to USD 2.5 million or more for a dual-source photon-counting system.

The price ladder follows detector width and technology. Chinese public tenders paid a median RMB 4.39 million, about USD 612,000, in January to August 2025, up 25.5% from RMB 3.50 million a year earlier, and units above RMB 5 million made up about 52% of tenders, the [21 May 2026 Pedaily report](https://news.pedaily.cn/20260521/130328.shtml) shows, as buyers moved to wider detectors. Douglas Insights puts 64-slice units at USD 300,000 to USD 500,000, 256-slice and spectral units at USD 800,000 to USD 1.5 million and photon-counting at USD 1.8 million to USD 2.8 million.

Average price rises 1.5% a year in the base case, to about USD 743,000 in 2035, because the photon-counting share of value climbs from 6.0% to about 16% even as mid-range prices fall. Margins show where pricing stands: Siemens Healthineers' Imaging adjusted margin reached 26.5% in the April to June 2026 quarter, helped by refunds of US emergency tariffs, its [31 July 2026 results](https://corporate.webassets.siemens-healthineers.com/2637d4a46dbcd161/a3335cc16ed1/siemens-healthineers-Q3_FY2026_Earnings-Release-and-Financial-Results.pdf) state, and GE HealthCare booked a USD 55 million tariff refund in the third quarter of 2026, its [8-K](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/0001932393/000193239326000058/release3q26earnings.htm) shows.

## What if China stays weak or photon-counting spreads faster: how large is the CT scanners market in 2035?

The CT scanners market ends 2035 between USD 14.53 billion and USD 22.30 billion across our three cases, around a base of USD 18.20 billion. Chinese tender volume and the photon-counting share set most of the spread.

| Case | Unit leg | Price leg | Revenue rate | 2035 value |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Slower | 2.20% | 0.60% | 2.81% | USD 14.53 billion |
| Base case | 3.60% | 1.50% | 5.15% | USD 18.20 billion |
| Faster | 4.80% | 2.40% | 7.32% | USD 22.30 billion |

In the slower case Chinese tenders stay near 3,000 units a year, a US Section 232 tariff lands on imported scanners and photon-counting stays a tertiary-hospital product, taking 1.4 points off units and 0.9 points off price. In the faster case Indonesia-style national programmes spread across Southeast Asia and Africa and photon-counting reaches mid-sized hospitals, adding 1.2 points of units and 0.9 points of price. One extra point of yearly revenue growth adds about USD 1.80 billion to 2035 value, a Douglas Insights estimate.

Live signals sit near the base case. Siemens Healthineers' 10.0% fourth-quarter Imaging growth, Philips' 8% comparable order intake rise and four photon-counting approvals or launches in 13 months point up. Flat Philips sales and lower Chinese exam fees point down. The signal to watch is China: if public CT tenders return above 4,000 units in 2027, the faster case gains weight. A second signal is the Section 232 outcome: no proclamation had been issued by 28 October 2026, [SPS Commerce noted](https://www.spscommerce.com/community/articles/section-232-medical-device-tariffs-the-investigation-that-never-closed), and a 15% duty would lift US scanner prices about USD 100,000, Douglas Insights estimates.

## Which rules shape CT scanners, from FDA clearance to dose limits and EU device law?

Four rule sets shape CT scanners: FDA 510(k) clearance in the United States, the EU Medical Device Regulation, radiation protection law such as Euratom's basic safety standards, and China's exam fee guidelines.

Clearance sets launch timing. The FDA cleared GE HealthCare's True Definition DL deep-learning reconstruction with a 1024 matrix, its [release of 2 April 2026](https://www.gehealthcare.com/en/about/newsroom/press-releases/ge-healthcare-broadens-its-deep-learning-ct-portfolio-with-fda-clearance-of-true-definition-dl) states, while Photonova Spectra was not yet CE marked when cleared in March. The European Commission proposed simplifying Regulation (EU) 2017/745, the Medical Device Regulation, and the in vitro diagnostics rules on 16 December 2025, its [proposal page](https://health.ec.europa.eu/publications/proposal-regulation-simplify-rules-medical-and-vitro-diagnostic-devices_en) shows, which would shorten recertification work for scanner software updates.

Dose rules shape scanner design. [Council Directive 2013/59/Euratom](https://eur-lex.europa.eu/eli/dir/2013/59/oj) requires member states to set diagnostic reference levels and record patient dose, and the 2025 JAMA Internal Medicine study projected about 103,000 future cancers from 2023 US CT use, about 5% of annual diagnoses, the [published paper](https://physicians.radiology.ca/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/JAMA.pdf) states, which pushes buyers to low-dose detectors and reconstruction. China's National Healthcare Security Administration pricing guideline, reported by [Xinhua on 22 May 2025](https://www.news.cn/fortune/20250522/d6b495f739ac4859a104431b46c7723b/c.html), ties hospital income to standard exam fees rather than slice count.

The CT Workload Index is a Douglas Insights model built from 12 inputs: 6 government statistics, 4 company releases and 2 published studies or trade reports, listed below. It measures annual CT exams per installed scanner, a guide to how far a health system is short of capacity.

| Date | Input | What it moves |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 13 March 2024 | China State Council: equipment renewal plan | Chinese capacity |
| 13 March 2025 | Siemens Healthineers: Alpha.Pro and Alpha.Prime cleared | Technology mix |
| 14 April 2025 | JAMA Internal Medicine: 93 million US CT exams in 2023 | US workload |
| 24 July 2025 | NHS England: 8.29 million CT tests | UK workload, prior year |
| 16 December 2025 | GE HealthCare: 300+ scanners for Indonesia | Emerging-market capacity |
| 23 March 2026 | GE HealthCare: Photonova Spectra cleared | Technology mix |
| 17 April 2026 | Canon Medical: Ultimion on sale in Japan | Technology mix |
| 29 April 2026 | United Imaging: 2025 revenue up 33.98% | Chinese vendor growth |
| 21 May 2026 | Pedaily: 3,133 Chinese CT tenders in 2025 | Chinese units |
| 8 June 2026 | Full Fact: 757 English CT scanners | UK installed base |
| 23 July 2026 | NHS England: 8.80 million CT tests | UK workload |
| 6 November 2026 | OECD: CT scanners per million population | Installed base by country |

The finding, a Douglas Insights estimate: each of England's 757 scanners performed about 11,600 CT tests in the year to March 2026, against about 6,600 exams per scanner in the United States, from 93 million exams on 14,150 units. To bring English workload down to the US level, England would need about 1,340 scanners, about 580 more than it ran in March 2025.

The index changes how to read the market. Countries with high workload per scanner and public pledges, such as England and Indonesia, buy in bursts tied to budgets, while dense fleets such as Japan's buy mainly for replacement. Douglas Insights therefore forecasts units from workload gaps and replacement cycles, not from population alone.

## How does the methodology turn 17,200 scanners into USD 11.01 billion?

Our methodology multiplies about 17,200 CT scanners sold in 2025 by an average USD 640,000 each to reach USD 11.01 billion, then grows units 3.6% a year and price 1.5% a year.

The model covers 5 scanner classes, 3 end users and 5 regions, using 58 data points, 22 sourced and 36 modelled. Units come from a regional build: about 7,300 in Asia Pacific, 3,900 in North America, 3,600 in Europe, 1,200 in Latin America and 1,200 in the Middle East and Africa, Douglas Insights estimates drawn from OECD installed bases, 8 to 10 year replacement cycles and tender counts. Arithmetic: 17,200 x USD 640,000 = USD 11.01 billion; USD 11.01 billion x (1.036 x 1.015)^10 = USD 18.20 billion. Units reach about 17,800 in 2026 and 24,500 in 2035.

Two cross-checks agree. First, Chinese public tenders of 3,133 units at a median RMB 4.39 million come to about RMB 13.8 billion, about USD 1.92 billion, which sits inside our USD 2.5 billion China estimate once private hospital purchases are added. Second, CT at about one-fifth of the roughly USD 33.8 billion combined 2025 imaging revenue of Siemens Healthineers, GE HealthCare and Philips gives about USD 6.8 billion, close to our 60% combined share for those three. Currency conversions use Douglas Insights rates of USD 1.13 per euro, RMB 7.18 per US dollar and JPY 150 per US dollar. AI tools help draft the text and automated checks test the arithmetic and links; the Douglas Insights research desk chooses the sources, builds the model and approves publication, as our [editorial standards](https://www.douglasinsights.com/research-methodology/) explain.

## What counts in the CT scanners study, and what is excluded?

The CT scanners study counts new whole-body CT systems sold to human healthcare providers, including spectral, dual-source, photon-counting and mobile scanners. PET-CT and SPECT-CT hybrids, refurbished units, service contracts, dental cone-beam CT and veterinary scanners are excluded.

The study splits value by 5 scanner classes, 3 end users and 5 regions: Asia Pacific, North America, Europe, Latin America, and the Middle East and Africa. Imaging services and other modalities appear in our [Diagnostic Imaging Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/diagnostic-imaging-market/) report, image storage in the [Cloud Based Picture Archiving and Communication Service Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/cloud-based-picture-archiving-and-communication-service-market/) study and animal scanners in the [Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging Equipment Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/veterinary-diagnostic-imaging-equipment-market/) report.
