## Key takeaways

- The DeFi market earns USD 11.78 billion of fees in 2025 and USD 27.77 billion in 2035, an 8.95% CAGR.
- USD 119.5 billion of average TVL at USD 9.86 of fees per USD 100 forms the 2025 base; TVL grows 9.5% a year.
- DEXs hold 28.0% of fees; tokenised RWA and yield grow fastest at 12.6% a year.
- Uniswap leads with about 8.9% of fees, ahead of Hyperliquid and Aave; Uniswap turned on protocol fees on 29 December 2025.
- TVL fell from USD 167.91 billion in October 2025 to USD 80.73 billion in November 2026 after the 10 October 2025 liquidation crash.

Uniswap token holders voted 125,342,017 to 742 to turn on protocol fees and burn 100 million UNI, and the change was executed on-chain on 29 December 2025, the [Uniswap Foundation governance record](https://vote.uniswapfoundation.org/proposals/93) shows; a second vote switched on v4 fees on seven chains on 27 July 2026. The decentralized finance (DeFi) market covers the fees users pay to smart-contract protocols for trading, borrowing, staking, derivatives, tokenised real-world assets (RWA) and bridging, without a bank or broker in the middle. Douglas Insights sizes it at USD 11.78 billion of fees in 2025, about USD 119.5 billion of average total value locked (TVL) earning USD 9.86 per USD 100, and at USD 27.77 billion in 2035, an 8.95% compound annual growth rate (CAGR). ## Which DeFi protocol type earns the most fees: exchanges, lending, staking or perpetuals?

Decentralised exchanges (DEXs) earn the most, 28.0% of 2025 DeFi fees or about USD 3.30 billion, Douglas Insights estimates. Tokenised RWA and yield protocols grow fastest, 12.6% a year to USD 4.05 billion by 2035.

| Protocol type | Share 2025 | Value 2025 | CAGR 2026-2035 | Value 2035 |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Decentralised exchanges (DEXs) and aggregators | 28.0% | USD 3.30 billion | 7.0% | USD 6.49 billion |
| Lending, CDP and credit curation | 22.0% | USD 2.59 billion | 9.0% | USD 6.14 billion |
| Liquid staking and restaking | 19.0% | USD 2.24 billion | 6.4% | USD 4.16 billion |
| Perpetual and derivatives DEXs | 17.0% | USD 2.00 billion | 12.0% | USD 6.22 billion |
| Tokenised real-world assets (RWA) and yield | 10.5% | USD 1.24 billion | 12.6% | USD 4.05 billion |
| Bridges and cross-chain | 3.5% | USD 412.3 million | 4.8% | USD 658.9 million |

Spot exchanges lead because every swap pays a pool fee, and volume is large: DEXs traded USD 4.91 trillion in 2025, up from USD 2.58 trillion in 2024 and USD 904 billion in 2023, [DefiLlama data](https://defillama.com/dexs) show. Uniswap alone collected USD 1.05 billion of fees on USD 1.02 trillion of 2025 volume. DEX fees grow 7.0% a year to USD 6.49 billion by 2035, a Douglas Insights estimate.

Lending and collateralised debt position (CDP) protocols, USD 2.59 billion, grow 9.0% on borrowing demand; Aave says it holds over 50% of DeFi lending. Liquid staking and restaking, USD 2.24 billion, grows only 6.4% because its fee base tracks Ethereum staking yields. Perpetual DEXs, USD 2.00 billion, grow 12.0% as on-chain derivatives take share from centralised exchanges. RWA and yield protocols, USD 1.24 billion, grow fastest on tokenised Treasuries. Bridges, USD 412.3 million, grow 4.8%. Type values for 2035 sum to USD 27.72 billion, 0.18% below the headline.

## What drives DeFi fee growth: stablecoin law, tokenised Treasuries or on-chain perpetuals?

DeFi fees rise 8.95% a year in our base case: average TVL grows 9.5% a year, from USD 119.5 billion to about USD 296 billion, and fees per dollar fall 0.5%. Four drivers add 11.60 points; restraints remove 2.10.

### Stablecoin law and supply: 3.20 points

Stablecoins are the largest driver, worth 3.20 points, because they are the cash leg of almost every DeFi trade and loan. The GENIUS Act, signed on [18 July 2025](https://www.whitehouse.gov/fact-sheets/2025/07/fact-sheet-president-donald-j-trump-signs-genius-act-into-law/), requires 100% reserve backing in liquid assets such as dollars and short-term Treasuries and monthly public reserve disclosure, the White House fact sheet states. Stablecoin supply rose from USD 203.8 billion at the end of 2024 to USD 304.4 billion at the end of 2025 and peaked at USD 315.5 billion on 17 May 2026, [DefiLlama stablecoin data](https://defillama.com/stablecoins) show. Circle's average USDC in circulation reached USD 73.3 billion in the third quarter of 2026, up 8%, and USDC on-chain volume rose 49% to USD 13.9 trillion, its [results of 4 November 2026](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1876042/000187604226000309/finalq3epr-110326.htm) show. Douglas Insights estimates that about 22% of stablecoin supply sits inside DeFi protocols at any time.

### Tokenised Treasuries and real-world assets: 2.80 points

RWA adds 2.80 points. Tokenised US Treasuries held about USD 14.28 billion on 6 November 2026, with BlackRock's BUIDL fund at about USD 1.89 billion, [rwa.xyz data](https://app.rwa.xyz/treasuries) show, and Coinbase put tokenised RWA, excluding stablecoins, at USD 39 billion in its [third-quarter 2026 filing of 29 October 2026](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/0001679788/000167978826000121/q326earningsdeck_vsec.htm). The SEC granted an innovation exemption for tokenised stock venues with permissioned participants on [17 September 2026](https://www.sec.gov/newsroom/speeches-statements/atkins-innovation-exemption-bridge-toward-durable-rulemaking-091726), Chair Paul Atkins' statement shows. Douglas Insights estimates each USD 1 billion of tokenised Treasuries used as DeFi collateral adds about USD 25 million of yearly lending and yield fees.

### On-chain perpetual exchanges: 2.60 points

Perpetual DEXs add 2.60 points. Hyperliquid earned USD 972 million of fees in 2025 and kept USD 818 million as revenue, [DefiLlama protocol data](https://defillama.com/protocol/hyperliquid) show, more than any DeFi protocol except Uniswap on fees. Perpetual DEX volume reached about USD 7.9 trillion in 2025, [Cointelegraph reported on 31 December 2025](https://cointelegraph.com/news/perpetuals-dex-volume-2025-onchain-derivatives-growth) from DefiLlama data. Douglas Insights estimates on-chain perpetuals held about 10% of global crypto derivatives volume in 2025 and reach 22% by 2035.

### Cheaper settlement and new protocol designs: 3.00 points

Infrastructure adds the last 3.00 points. Ethereum's Fusaka upgrade activated on 3 December 2025 with PeerDAS, followed by blob-capacity forks on 9 December 2025 and 7 January 2026 that raised the blob target to 14, the [Ethereum Foundation](https://blog.ethereum.org/2025/11/06/fusaka-mainnet-announcement) states, cutting layer-2 costs. Aave V4 went live on Ethereum mainnet on [30 March 2026](https://aave.com/blog/aave-v4-live-ethereum) with a hub-and-spoke design across three liquidity hubs, and Aave says it has processed over USD 1 trillion of loans since V1. Summed, 3.20 + 2.80 + 2.60 + 3.00 = 11.60 points, a Douglas Insights estimate.

## What holds decentralized finance back: hacks, liquidation cascades or the regulatory gap?

Three restraints remove 2.10 points a year from DeFi TVL growth: hacks and exploits take 0.80 points, leverage-driven crashes 0.80 points and unresolved regulation of decentralised protocols 0.50 points.

Security losses are the heaviest drag because each exploit drains locked capital and scares new depositors. More than USD 3.4 billion of crypto was stolen in 2025, including USD 1.5 billion from the Bybit exchange in February, and North Korean actors took at least USD 2.02 billion, up 51%, [Chainalysis reported on 18 December 2025](https://www.chainalysis.com/blog/crypto-hacking-stolen-funds-2026/). Balancer's V2 Composable Stable Pools lost about USD 121 million to a rounding-error exploit on 3 November 2025, BlockSec's [technical analysis](https://blocksecteam.medium.com/in-depth-analysis-the-balancer-v2-exploit-9552f6442437) shows. Douglas Insights estimates exploits removed about 0.7% of average DeFi TVL in 2025.

Leverage crashes are the second drag, worth 0.80 points. About USD 19 billion of crypto derivatives positions were liquidated on 10 October 2025, "the largest liquidation day in crypto history", affecting about 1.6 million traders, and total crypto market value fell 30% from EUR 3.9 trillion to EUR 2.7 trillion by December, the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) [risk monitor of 11 March 2026](https://www.esma.europa.eu/sites/default/files/2026-03/ESMA50-1949966494-4041_TRV_Risk_Monitor_1_2026.pdf) shows. DeFi TVL fell from USD 167.91 billion on 7 October 2025 to USD 110.73 billion at the end of 2025 and USD 80.73 billion on 6 November 2026, [DefiLlama](https://defillama.com/) shows. Regulation takes the final 0.50 points, a Douglas Insights estimate: the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) called DeFi an "increasingly significant" gap in its [update of 16 July 2026](https://www.fatf-gafi.org/en/news/targeted-updated-va-vasps-2026.html), and the CLARITY Act still awaits a Senate floor vote.

## Which region generates the most DeFi fees, and where does activity grow fastest?

Asia Pacific generates the most DeFi fees, USD 3.65 billion or 31.0% of 2025 fees, Douglas Insights estimates, just ahead of North America at 30.0%. Latin America grows fastest, 10.0% a year to USD 2.14 billion by 2035.

| Region | Value 2025 | Share 2025 | Value 2026 | CAGR 2026-2035 | Value 2035 |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Asia Pacific | USD 3.65 billion | 31.0% | USD 3.14 billion | 9.0% | USD 8.65 billion |
| North America | USD 3.53 billion | 30.0% | USD 3.11 billion | 9.2% | USD 8.52 billion |
| Europe | USD 3.06 billion | 26.0% | USD 2.60 billion | 7.8% | USD 6.49 billion |
| Latin America | USD 824.6 million | 7.0% | USD 725.6 million | 10.0% | USD 2.14 billion |
| Middle East and Africa | USD 706.8 million | 6.0% | USD 636.1 million | 9.6% | USD 1.77 billion |

Regions are allocated by where users sit, since protocols have no home country. Asia Pacific received USD 2.36 trillion of on-chain value in the year to June 2025, up 69%, and India led the world for DeFi value received, ahead of the United States, Nigeria, Indonesia and Brazil, the [Chainalysis 2025 Global Adoption Index](https://www.chainalysis.com/blog/2025-global-crypto-adoption-index/) of 2 September 2025 shows. Asia Pacific fees fall to USD 3.14 billion in 2026 and then grow 9.0% a year.

North America received USD 3.02 trillion in the year to 1 July 2026, down 1.9%, of which the United States took USD 2.78 trillion, [Chainalysis reported on 14 October 2026](https://www.chainalysis.com/blog/north-america-crypto-adoption-2026/); its fees grow 9.2% as the GENIUS Act brings banks and fintechs on-chain. Europe, USD 3.06 billion, grows 7.8% under MiCA. Latin America, USD 824.6 million, grows 10.0% on dollar stablecoin use in Brazil and Argentina. The Middle East and Africa, USD 706.8 million, grow 9.6%, led by Nigeria. Regional values sum to USD 10.22 billion in 2026 and USD 27.56 billion in 2035, 0.73% below the headline.

## Which protocols and companies lead the DeFi market?

Uniswap leads the DeFi market with about 8.9% of 2025 fees, USD 1.05 billion, ahead of Hyperliquid at 8.3% and Aave at 7.7%, Douglas Insights estimates from DefiLlama data. The twelve leading protocols we track take about 49.6% together.

| Protocol | 2025 fees | 2025 revenue kept | 2026 fees to 6 November |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Uniswap | USD 1.05 billion | USD 0.2 million | USD 819 million |
| Hyperliquid | USD 972 million | USD 818 million | USD 748 million |
| Aave | USD 902 million | USD 125 million | USD 484 million |
| Lido | USD 847 million | USD 41.5 million | USD 472 million |
| Jupiter | USD 536 million | USD 170 million | USD 174 million |
| Sky (formerly Maker) | USD 411 million | USD 240 million | USD 321 million |
| PancakeSwap | USD 388 million | USD 130 million | USD 135 million |
| Ethena | USD 385 million | USD 12.8 million | USD 199 million |
| Morpho | USD 162 million | n/a | USD 178 million |

The figures come from [DefiLlama's fees dashboard](https://defillama.com/fees), pulled on 6 November 2026. Uniswap's revenue jumped from about USD 0.2 million in 2025 to USD 63.6 million in 2026 to date after the fee switch, which sends a quarter of fees in 0.01% and 0.05% v3 pools to the protocol, the [UNIfication proposal of 10 November 2025](https://blog.uniswap.org/unification) states. Morpho, a lending network, nearly doubled its TVL from USD 5.7 billion to USD 11.1 billion over 2026, DefiLlama shows.

Listed companies are building on DeFi rather than competing with it. Coinbase earned USD 307 million of stablecoin revenue in the third quarter of 2026, on-chain borrow and lend balances in its products averaged USD 1.87 billion, up from USD 610 million a year earlier, and its Base network ranks first among layer-2 chains for DeFi TVL, its [filing of 29 October 2026](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/0001679788/000167978826000121/q326earningsdeck_vsec.htm) shows. Robinhood Chain earned over USD 50 million of fees and handled over USD 80 billion of DEX volume in its first quarter on mainnet, while Robinhood's own crypto revenue fell 55% to USD 120 million, its [results of 27 October 2026](https://investors.robinhood.com/news-releases/news-release-details/robinhood-reports-third-quarter-2026-results) show.

Lido, the largest liquid staking protocol, earned net DAO revenue of USD 15.9 million in the first half of 2026, its [tokenholder update of 28 August 2026](https://blog.lido.fi/lido-poolside-recap-tokenholder-update-august-2026/) shows, a small share of the staking fees it routes to node operators and stakers. Douglas Insights estimates no protocol will hold more than 10% of DeFi fees by 2035, because perpetuals, lending and RWA each have separate leaders.

## How much does DeFi cost users: swap fees, borrow spreads and protocol take rates?

DeFi costs users an average USD 9.86 of fees a year for every USD 100 locked in 2025, Douglas Insights estimates, from about 0.10% of each Uniswap swap to the interest spread a lender keeps.

The fee ladder varies by protocol type. Uniswap's USD 1.05 billion of fees on USD 1.02 trillion of 2025 volume is a blended swap fee of about 0.103%, and PancakeSwap's USD 388 million on USD 670 billion is about 0.058%, DefiLlama data show. Protocols then keep different shares: Hyperliquid kept 84% of its 2025 fees, Sky 58%, Aave 14% and Lido 5%, by the same data. Douglas Insights estimates the twelve leading protocols we track kept about 27% of their fees in 2025; the rest went to liquidity providers, stakers and node operators.

Fees per USD 100 locked fall 0.5% a year in the base case, to about USD 9.38 in 2035, because competition between pools, aggregators and layer-2 chains pushes swap fees down. The ratio swings with markets: as TVL fell to an average of about USD 86.0 billion in 2026, fees per USD 100 rose to about USD 11.88, a Douglas Insights estimate, because active traders stayed while passive deposits left. DeFi fees for 2026 to 6 November ran about 16% below the same period of 2025 across all tracked protocols.

Fee switches change who earns the money, not what users pay. Uniswap's v2 split, 0.25% to liquidity providers and 0.05% to the protocol, keeps the 0.30% pool fee unchanged, the [proposal](https://blog.uniswap.org/unification) states. Douglas Insights treats fee switches as neutral to market size but positive for protocol revenue.

## What if TVL recovers fast or another crash hits: how large is the DeFi market in 2035?

The DeFi market ends 2035 between USD 18.14 billion and USD 39.99 billion across our three cases, around a base of USD 27.77 billion. Stablecoin growth and tokenised asset adoption set most of the spread.

| Case | TVL leg | Fee rate leg | Revenue rate | 2035 value |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Slower | 6.00% | -1.50% | 4.41% | USD 18.14 billion |
| Base case | 9.50% | -0.50% | 8.95% | USD 27.77 billion |
| Faster | 13.00% | 0.00% | 13.00% | USD 39.99 billion |

In the slower case another 2025-style crash and a large exploit keep TVL near USD 200 billion in 2035, and fees per dollar fall faster as pools compete, taking 3.5 points off TVL growth. In the faster case the CLARITY Act passes, banks route stablecoin balances into DeFi lending and tokenised Treasuries pass USD 200 billion, adding 3.5 points. One extra point of yearly growth adds about USD 2.7 billion to 2035 fees, a Douglas Insights estimate.

Live signals sit below the base case for 2026 and near it for the decade. TVL is down 27% in 2026 and fees are down about 16%, but stablecoin supply held at USD 293.7 billion on 6 November 2026 and Circle's on-chain volume grew 49%. Our base case has 2026 fees at about USD 10.22 billion, then growth of about 11.8% a year to 2035.

## Which laws reach decentralized finance, from MiCA's exemption to the GENIUS and CLARITY Acts?

Three legal layers reach DeFi: stablecoin laws such as the US GENIUS Act and EU MiCA, market-structure bills such as the CLARITY Act, and anti-money-laundering standards set by FATF.

The EU layer leaves pure DeFi out. Recital 22 of Regulation (EU) 2023/1114 says MiCA does not apply where crypto services are provided "in a fully decentralised manner without any intermediary", [EUR-Lex](https://eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-content/EN/TXT/HTML/?uri=CELEX:32023R1114) shows, and firms operating before 30 December 2024 could continue under national rules until 1 July 2026, [ESMA](https://www.esma.europa.eu/esmas-activities/digital-finance-and-innovation/markets-crypto-assets-regulation-mica) states. The European Banking Authority (EBA) and ESMA called DeFi "a niche phenomenon", with TVL at 4% of crypto market value and DEXs at about 10% of spot volume, in a [joint report of 16 January 2025](https://www.esma.europa.eu/press-news/esma-news/eba-and-esma-analyse-recent-developments-crypto-assets).

The US layer is moving. The Senate Banking Committee advanced the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act 15 to 9 on [14 May 2026](https://www.banking.senate.gov/newsroom/majority/chairman-scott-senate-banking-committee-advance-clarity-act-in-historic-bipartisan-vote), and SEC staff said certain liquid staking activities "do not involve the offer and sale of securities" on [5 August 2025](https://www.sec.gov/newsroom/press-releases/2025-104-securities-exchange-commission-division-corporation-finance-issues-staff-statement-certain-liquid). FATF found 83% of surveyed jurisdictions had passed Travel Rule laws, up from 73%, in its [July 2026 update](https://www.fatf-gafi.org/en/news/targeted-updated-va-vasps-2026.html). Douglas Insights assumes the CLARITY Act passes in 2027 in the base case.

## Douglas Exclusive: the DeFi Fee Capture Ladder

The DeFi Fee Capture Ladder is a Douglas Insights model built from 12 inputs: 3 on-chain datasets, 6 governance and protocol records and 3 company filings, listed below. It tracks how much of each fee dollar protocols keep.

| Date | Input | What it moves |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 10 November 2025 | Uniswap UNIfication proposal: 0.05% of the 0.30% v2 fee to protocol | DEX capture |
| 3 December 2025 | Ethereum Fusaka upgrade with PeerDAS | Settlement cost |
| 29 December 2025 | Uniswap fee switch executed, 125,342,017 votes for | DEX capture |
| 31 December 2025 | DefiLlama: TVL USD 110.73 billion | Fee base |
| 31 December 2025 | DefiLlama: stablecoins USD 304.4 billion | Collateral base |
| 30 March 2026 | Aave V4 live with three liquidity hubs | Lending capture |
| 27 July 2026 | Uniswap v4 fees switched on across seven chains | DEX capture |
| 28 August 2026 | Lido: H1 2026 net DAO revenue USD 15.9 million | Staking capture |
| 27 October 2026 | Robinhood Chain: over USD 50 million of fees | Chain capture |
| 29 October 2026 | Coinbase: on-chain borrow and lend USD 1.87 billion | Lending demand |
| 4 November 2026 | Circle: USDC on-chain volume USD 13.9 trillion | Stablecoin flow |
| 6 November 2026 | DefiLlama: protocol fees and revenue, 2025 and 2026 | Capture ratio |

The finding, a Douglas Insights estimate: the twelve leading protocols we track kept about 27% of fees in 2025, and that share rises to about 40% by 2030 as Uniswap, Aave and other governance tokens turn on fee switches. Uniswap alone moved from about 0.02% of fees kept in 2025 to about 7.8% in 2026.

The ladder changes how to read the market. Total fees measure what users pay; capture measures what token holders earn. A protocol can grow revenue while total fees fall, as Uniswap did in 2026, so Douglas Insights reports both and sizes the market on fees paid.

## How does the methodology turn USD 119.5 billion of TVL into USD 11.78 billion of fees?

Our methodology multiplies USD 119.5 billion of average 2025 DeFi TVL by USD 9.86 of fees per USD 100 locked to reach USD 11.78 billion, then grows TVL 9.5% and fees per dollar minus 0.5% a year.

The model covers 6 protocol types and 5 regions, using 58 data points, 24 sourced and 34 modelled. DefiLlama recorded USD 27.48 billion of fees in 2025 across all tracked protocols; we remove stablecoin issuers such as Tether and Circle, blockchains, launchpads, NFT markets, wallets and trading apps, which leaves 42.9% of the total, a Douglas Insights estimate. Arithmetic: USD 119.5 billion x 9.86% = USD 11.78 billion; USD 11.78 billion x (1.095 x 0.995)^10 = USD 27.77 billion.

Two cross-checks agree. First, the nine protocols in our table earned USD 5.66 billion of 2025 fees, 48.0% of our total, close to the 50% concentration typical of protocol rankings. Second, DEX fees of USD 3.30 billion on USD 4.91 trillion of spot volume imply a 0.067% blended fee, between Uniswap's 0.103% and PancakeSwap's 0.058%. ## What counts in the DeFi study, and what is excluded?

The DeFi study counts fees users pay to non-custodial smart-contract protocols for swaps, loans, staking, derivatives, tokenised assets and bridges. Stablecoin issuer income, blockchain gas fees, centralised exchanges and NFT markets are excluded.

The study splits fees by 6 protocol types and 5 regions: Asia Pacific, North America, Europe, Latin America, and the Middle East and Africa. Central bank digital money appears in our [CBDC Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/central-bank-blockchain-digital-currency-cbdc-market/) report, and token marketplaces in the [Non Fungible Token (NFT) Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/non-fungible-token-nft-market/) report.
