Rieter completed its purchase of Barmag, the man-made fibre machinery business it bought from Oerlikon for an enterprise value of CHF 850 million plus an earn-out of up to CHF 100 million, on 2 February 2026, [Oerlikon said](https://www.oerlikon.com/en/about-us/media/press-releases/oerlikon-completes-divestment-of-barmag/), and world shipments of double-heater draw-texturing spindles fell 22% to 743,000 in 2025, the International Textile Manufacturers Federation's (ITMF) [shipment statistics of 24 July 2026](https://itmf.org/images/dl/press-releases/2026/2026-07-24-ITMSS-48-2025.pdf) show. The draw heat setting winder market covers machines that draw, heat-set and wind synthetic filament yarn: draw-texturing (DTY) machines, heated-godet draw-winding systems on partially oriented (POY), fully drawn (FDY) and industrial yarn spinning lines, and continuous heat-setting lines for carpet yarn. Douglas Insights sizes it at USD 2.20 billion in 2025, about 1.00 million winding positions shipped at an average USD 2,200 each, and at USD 3.17 billion in 2035, a 3.73% compound annual growth rate (CAGR). The study sits in our [technical textiles coverage](https://www.douglasinsights.com/industry/technical-textiles/), beside the [Technical Textiles Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/technical-textiles-market/), [Smart Textiles Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/smart-textiles-market/) and [Biodegradable Polymers Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/biodegradable-polymers-market/) reports; every figure follows the Douglas Insights [research methodology](https://www.douglasinsights.com/research-methodology/).

## Which machine type earns the most: draw-texturing machines, POY and FDY draw-winders or heat-setting lines?

Draw-texturing machines earn the most, 46.0% of 2025 value or about USD 1.01 billion, Douglas Insights estimates. Industrial yarn and carpet heat-setting lines grow fastest, 4.4% a year to USD 541 million by 2035.

| Machine type | Share 2025 | Value 2025 | CAGR 2026-2035 | Value 2035 |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Draw-texturing (DTY) machines | 46.0% | USD 1.01 billion | 3.2% | USD 1.39 billion |
| POY and FDY draw-winding systems | 38.0% | USD 836 million | 4.1% | USD 1.25 billion |
| Industrial yarn and carpet heat-setting lines | 16.0% | USD 352 million | 4.4% | USD 541 million |

Draw-texturing machines lead because they are bought in the largest numbers: every tonne of textured polyester for apparel and home textiles passes through a DTY position that draws the yarn over a heater and twists it. ITMF counted about 65,000 single-heater and 743,000 double-heater draw-texturing spindles shipped in 2025, against a revised 83,000 and 960,000 in 2024, its [24 July 2026 release](https://itmf.org/images/dl/press-releases/2026/2026-07-24-ITMSS-48-2025.pdf) shows. Douglas Insights values those 808,000 positions at about USD 1,250 each, and DTY value grows 3.2% a year to USD 1.39 billion as shipments recover from the 2025 trough.

POY and FDY draw-winding systems, USD 836 million, grow 4.1% a year to USD 1.25 billion because each new direct-spinning polyester plant needs heated godets and high-speed winders, and these positions cost several times a texturing position. Industrial yarn and carpet heat-setting lines, USD 352 million, grow fastest at 4.4%; Superba, part of the Vandewiele group, sells TVP3 lines that use saturated steam and DHS3 lines that use superheated steam, and Power-Heat-Set of Töging in Germany sells GVA and HiPerSet lines for bulked continuous filament carpet yarn. Machine-type values for 2035 sum to USD 3.18 billion, 0.12% above the headline.

## Which fibre do draw heat setting winders process: polyester, nylon or polypropylene?

Polyester accounts for most draw heat setting winder demand, 78.0% of 2025 value or about USD 1.72 billion, Douglas Insights estimates. Polyester and polypropylene grow fastest, 3.8% and 3.9% a year to 2035.

| Fibre | Share 2025 | Value 2025 | CAGR 2026-2035 | Value 2035 |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Polyester | 78.0% | USD 1.72 billion | 3.8% | USD 2.49 billion |
| Nylon (polyamide) | 15.0% | USD 330 million | 3.4% | USD 461 million |
| Polypropylene and other | 7.0% | USD 154 million | 3.9% | USD 226 million |

Polyester leads because it is the world's dominant fibre. Global fibre production reached about 132 million tonnes in 2024, of which polyester made up about 78 million tonnes or 59%, and recycled polyester about 9.3 million tonnes or 12% of polyester, the Textile Exchange [Materials Market Report of 18 September 2025](https://textileexchange.org/knowledge-center/reports/materials-market-report-2025/) states. Polyester value grows 3.8% a year to USD 2.49 billion.

Nylon, USD 330 million, grows 3.4% on hosiery, sportswear and carpet yarn, where heat-setting fixes the bulk and twist. Polypropylene and other polymers, USD 154 million, grow 3.9% on carpet and industrial yarn. Fibre values for 2035 sum to USD 3.18 billion, 0.14% above the headline.

The fibre mix also sets the machine specification. Douglas Insights estimates nylon texturing positions sell for about 10% more than polyester ones because they run at lower heater temperatures with tighter tension control, and polypropylene carpet lines need longer heat-setting tunnels per end. Recycled polyester, which made up about 12% of polyester in 2024 according to [Textile Exchange](https://textileexchange.org/knowledge-center/reports/materials-market-report-2025/), behaves more like virgin polyester on the winder but needs more filtration upstream, so its growth adds to polyester positions rather than creating a separate machine class.

## What drives draw heat setting winder demand: polyester growth, new spinning capacity or India's textile incentives?

Winding position shipments rise 2.2% a year in our base case, from about 1.00 million in 2025 to about 1.24 million in 2035. Four drivers add 3.00 points of gross growth; restraints remove 0.80 points.

### Polyester fibre output growth: 1.20 points

Fibre volume is the largest driver, worth 1.20 points. China's chemical fibre output reached 87.01 million tonnes in 2025, up 4.9%, with 7.82 million tonnes in December alone, [China Textile Leader reported on 23 January 2026](https://texleader.com.cn/en/news-35334.html) citing the National Bureau of Statistics. Polyester's 59% share of world fibre, from the [Textile Exchange report](https://textileexchange.org/knowledge-center/reports/materials-market-report-2025/), means most new fibre tonnage needs drawing, texturing and winding capacity. Douglas Insights estimates each extra 1 million tonnes of polyester filament output needs about 10,000 new texturing positions.

### New filament spinning capacity in China: 0.70 points

New plants add 0.70 points. About 1.83 million tonnes a year of new polyester filament yarn capacity was due to start in China in 2025 across 6 units, [Mysteel reported on 28 February 2025](https://www.mysteel.net/news/5078289-183-million-ty-new-polyester-filament-yarn-capacity-to-be-released-in-2025), and Chinese polyester filament plants ran at about 92% of capacity in the third quarter of 2025, [China Textile Leader reported on 19 December 2025](https://texleader.com.cn/en/news-35292.html). Rieter's sales in China rose 237% to CHF 350.3 million in the first half of 2026, partly on the Barmag consolidation, its [half-year release of 17 July 2026](https://www.rieter.com/fileadmin/user_upload/media/2026/semi-annual-report-2026/rieter-media-release-2026-07-17-en.pdf) shows.

### India's man-made fibre incentives: 0.60 points

South Asian investment adds 0.60 points. India's textiles ministry cleared 17 new applicants under the production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme for man-made fibre apparel, fabrics and technical textiles, with proposed investment of Rs 2,374 crore, on top of 74 approved in earlier rounds, [All India Radio reported on 18 November 2025](https://www.newsonair.gov.in/textiles-ministry-clears-17-new-applicants-under-pli-scheme-to-boost-mmf-technical-textiles-sectors). Rieter's India sales rose 69% to CHF 119.8 million in the first half of 2026, the [17 July 2026 release](https://www.rieter.com/fileadmin/user_upload/media/2026/semi-annual-report-2026/rieter-media-release-2026-07-17-en.pdf) shows. Douglas Insights estimates India buys about 4% of world texturing positions.

### Recycled polyester and replacement of old machines: 0.50 points

Recycling and replacement add the last 0.50 points. Recycled polyester reached about 9.3 million tonnes, the [September 2025 Textile Exchange report](https://textileexchange.org/knowledge-center/reports/materials-market-report-2025/) shows, and Douglas Insights estimates that converting bottle-grade and textile-to-textile recycled chip into filament favours newer winders with tighter tension control. Douglas Insights also estimates about 4% of the installed texturing base, which runs 12 to 15 years, is replaced each year. Summed, 1.20 + 0.70 + 0.60 + 0.50 = 3.00 points, a Douglas Insights estimate.

## What holds draw heat setting winder orders back: Chinese overcapacity or tariffs on machine imports?

Two restraints remove 0.80 points a year from winding position growth: overcapacity and thin margins at Chinese polyester producers take 0.50 points, and tariffs and trade barriers on European machinery take 0.30 points.

Overcapacity is the heavier drag because filament producers delay new lines when margins fall. Chinese polyester producers considered cutting output by about 10% and held inventories of about 27 days of POY, 30 days of FDY and 31 days of DTY, [S&P Global reported on 1 April 2025](https://www.spglobal.com/energy/en/news-research/latest-news/chemicals/040125-chinese-polyester-producers-consider-production-cuts-to-boost-demand). Billion Industrial's filament gross margin fell to 9.0% in 2025 from 11.2% and its gross profit per tonne to RMB 723 from RMB 975, its [annual report of 16 April 2026](https://www1.hkexnews.hk/listedco/listconews/sehk/2026/0416/2026041600530.pdf) shows. The 22% fall in 2025 double-heater spindle shipments, in the [ITMF data](https://itmf.org/images/dl/press-releases/2026/2026-07-24-ITMSS-48-2025.pdf), is the result.

Trade barriers take 0.30 points. A US tariff of 39% on Swiss goods took effect on 7 August 2025, the trade association [Swiss Textiles said](https://swisstextiles.ch/en/issues/secure-trade-relations-have-never-been-as-important-as-they-are-now), raising costs for US buyers of Swiss-built textile machinery. Douglas Insights estimates such barriers delay about 3% of non-Chinese orders by a year.

## Which region buys the most draw heat setting winders, and where does demand grow fastest?

Asia Pacific buys the most draw heat setting winders, USD 1.85 billion or 84.0% of 2025 value, led by China. The Middle East and Africa grow fastest, 5.6% a year to USD 190 million by 2035.

| Region | Value 2025 | Share 2025 | Value 2026 | CAGR 2026-2035 | Value 2035 |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Asia Pacific | USD 1.85 billion | 84.0% | USD 1.91 billion | 3.6% | USD 2.63 billion |
| Europe (including Turkey) | USD 132 million | 6.0% | USD 136 million | 3.2% | USD 181 million |
| Middle East and Africa | USD 110 million | 5.0% | USD 116 million | 5.6% | USD 190 million |
| North America | USD 55 million | 2.5% | USD 57 million | 3.0% | USD 74 million |
| Latin America | USD 55 million | 2.5% | USD 58 million | 4.6% | USD 86 million |

Asia Pacific leads because China alone took 92% of single-heater and 93% of double-heater texturing spindles in 2025, and Asia about 98% of both, the [ITMF statistics](https://itmf.org/images/dl/press-releases/2026/2026-07-24-ITMSS-48-2025.pdf) show. Its share of value, 84%, is lower than its share of units because Chinese-built machines cost less and because POY and FDY lines go to India, Turkey, Egypt and Central Asia. Regional value grows 3.6% a year to USD 2.63 billion.

Europe, including Turkey, USD 132 million, grows 3.2%. The Middle East and Africa, USD 110 million, grow fastest on Egyptian and Gulf polyester projects, a Douglas Insights estimate. North America, USD 55 million, grows 3.0%, and Latin America, USD 55 million, grows 4.6%. Regional values sum to USD 2.28 billion in 2026 and USD 3.16 billion in 2035, 0.35% below the headline.

Inside Asia Pacific, India is the second market after China, Douglas Insights estimates. Rieter's India sales of CHF 119.8 million in the first half of 2026, up 69%, from its [17 July 2026 release](https://www.rieter.com/fileadmin/user_upload/media/2026/semi-annual-report-2026/rieter-media-release-2026-07-17-en.pdf), cover both staple and filament machinery, but Douglas Insights estimates filament winders and texturing machines make up about a quarter of India's spending. Indian builders such as Himson and Aalidhra supply most local texturing positions, while POY and FDY winders for large integrated plants are still imported.

## Which companies lead the draw heat setting winder market?

Rieter, through the former Barmag business, leads draw heat setting winders with about 24% of 2025 value, Douglas Insights estimates, ahead of TMT Machinery at about 10% and Beijing Chonglee at about 6%.

| Company | Winder position | Latest reported figure | Source date |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Rieter (Man-Made Fiber Division, ex-Barmag) | WINGS POY and FDY winders, eFK texturing | Five-month sales CHF 293 million; EBIT margin 6.7% | 17 July 2026 |
| Oerlikon | Exited with the Barmag sale | Sale closed; book gain CHF 287 million | 2 and 24 February 2026 |
| Murata Machinery | Spinning, winding and textile machinery | Textile machinery sales JPY 109.0 billion | FY to March 2026 |
| TMT Machinery | ATF texturing and filament winders | Private; no results published | Douglas Insights estimate |
| Beijing Chonglee, Himson, Aalidhra | Chinese and Indian winders and DTY machines | No 2025-26 figures disclosed | Douglas Insights estimate |
| Superba (Vandewiele), Power-Heat-Set | Carpet yarn heat-setting lines | No 2025-26 figures disclosed | Douglas Insights estimate |

Rieter is the largest maker after the deal, a Douglas Insights estimate. Barmag had sales of about CHF 734 million in 2024 and about 2,600 employees, and Rieter paid about 6.3 times through-the-cycle EBITDA, its [release of 6 May 2025](https://www.rieter.com/fileadmin/user_upload/media/2025/acquisition/rieter-media-release-2025-05-06-en.pdf) states. In the five months it owned the business in the first half of 2026, the Man-Made Fiber Division booked orders of CHF 261.3 million and sales of CHF 292.7 million, of which CHF 277.4 million were new machines, with operating EBIT of CHF 19.7 million, the [17 July 2026 release](https://www.rieter.com/fileadmin/user_upload/media/2026/semi-annual-report-2026/rieter-media-release-2026-07-17-en.pdf) shows. Rieter named Georg Stausberg, Barmag's former chief executive, as group CEO on 4 November 2026, its [media releases](https://www.rieter.com/media/media-releases) show.

Oerlikon now reports only surface solutions, with 2025 continuing sales of CHF 1.57 billion, its [results of 24 February 2026](https://www.oerlikon.com/ecoma/files/2026-02-24_Oerlikon_Medienmitteilung_GJ_2025.pdf?download=1) show. Murata's textile machinery sales rose to JPY 109.0 billion in the year to March 2026 from JPY 99.9 billion, its [financial overview](https://www.muratec.com/company/media/2026/07/FOA_202603_e.pdf) shows, though most of that is spinning and winding for staple yarn. Chinese and Indian makers share the remaining 60%, a Douglas Insights estimate.

## How much does a winding position cost, from a Chinese texturing spindle to a carpet heat-setting line?

A draw heat setting winder position sells for an average USD 2,200 in 2025, Douglas Insights estimates, from about USD 900 for a Chinese texturing position to about USD 16,000 per end on a carpet heat-setting line.

The price ladder follows machine type and origin. Douglas Insights puts Chinese double-heater texturing positions at USD 900 to USD 1,100, European and Japanese ones at USD 2,500 to USD 3,500, POY and FDY winding positions with heated godets at USD 4,000 to USD 6,000, and carpet heat-setting lines at USD 12,000 to USD 20,000 per yarn end. No maker publishes list prices. Large turnkey orders give a sense of scale: Oerlikon won three Chinese orders for WINGS POY and FDY winders plus eFK texturing machines worth more than CHF 600 million in total, [Textile World reported on 16 March 2020](https://www.textileworld.com/textile-world/fiber-world/2020/03/long-term-project-business-in-china-remains-stable-oerlikon-wins-three-large-manmade-fibers-orders-in-china-with-a-total-value-of-over-chf-600-million/).

Average price rises 1.5% a year in the base case, to about USD 2,550 in 2035, as POY, FDY and heat-setting lines take a larger share of positions and automation such as doffing robots is added. Rieter announced higher prices to offset raw material costs in February 2026, its [media releases](https://www.rieter.com/media/media-releases) show, but the Man-Made Fiber Division's 6.7% EBIT margin in the first half of 2026, from the [17 July 2026 release](https://www.rieter.com/fileadmin/user_upload/media/2026/semi-annual-report-2026/rieter-media-release-2026-07-17-en.pdf), shows little room to push further while Chinese makers compete on price.

## What if the polyester cycle stays weak or recovers fast: how large is the draw heat setting winder market in 2035?

The draw heat setting winder market ends 2035 between USD 2.48 billion and USD 3.90 billion across our three cases, around a base of USD 3.17 billion. Chinese capacity decisions set most of the spread.

| Case | Unit leg | Price leg | Revenue rate | 2035 value |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Slower | 0.60% | 0.60% | 1.20% | USD 2.48 billion |
| Base case | 2.20% | 1.50% | 3.73% | USD 3.17 billion |
| Faster | 3.60% | 2.20% | 5.88% | USD 3.90 billion |

In the slower case Chinese filament makers freeze new lines for several years to protect margins, removing 1.6 points of position growth, and price competition cuts 0.9 points of price. In the faster case recycled polyester mandates and South Asian capacity lift position growth by 1.4 points, and a higher share of FDY and heat-setting lines adds 0.7 points of price. One extra point of yearly revenue growth adds about USD 320 million to 2035 value, a Douglas Insights estimate.

Live signals sit near the base case. Rieter's group orders of CHF 951.4 million for the first nine months of 2026, shown in its [28 October 2026 release](https://www.rieter.com/media/media-releases), and the 2025 China output growth of 4.9% point up; the 22% fall in 2025 spindle shipments and thin Chinese margins point down. The signal to watch is ITMA ASIA + CITME in Shanghai on 20 to 24 November 2026, after the 2025 Singapore edition drew more than 26,600 visitors from 109 countries and more than 840 exhibitors, [CEMATEX said](https://www.cematex.com/news/singapore-edition-of-itma-asia-citme-makes-successful-presentation/). If ITMF's 2026 statistics show double-heater spindle shipments back above 900,000, the faster case gains weight.

## Which rules shape draw heat setting winders, from the EU Machinery Regulation to India's withdrawn quality order?

Two rule sets shape draw heat setting winders: machinery safety law, led by the EU Machinery Regulation from January 2027, and import quality rules, where India withdrew a planned order covering textile machinery in January 2026.

The safety layer matters most for European makers and their export customers. [Regulation (EU) 2023/1230](https://osha.europa.eu/en/legislation/directive/regulation-20231230eu-machinery) replaces the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC from 20 January 2027, the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work states, adding cybersecurity and software rules for connected machines. Douglas Insights estimates winders with networked controls and doffing robots need new conformity files, adding about 1% to the cost of each new European model.

The import layer matters most in India. The Machinery and Electrical Equipment Safety (Omnibus Technical Regulation) Order of August 2024, which was due to apply from 1 October 2026 and cited IS 17361 and ISO 11111 for weaving and embroidery machines, was withdrawn on 16 January 2026, [India Briefing reported on 21 January 2026](https://www.india-briefing.com/news/india-textile-machinery-imports-qco-withdrawal-42021.html/). Douglas Insights reads the withdrawal as removing a certification hurdle for imported texturing and winding machines.

## Douglas Exclusive: the Texturing Spindle Cycle Index

The Texturing Spindle Cycle Index is a Douglas Insights model built from 12 inputs: 4 company releases, 5 official or industry statistics and 3 trade reports, listed below. It measures draw-texturing spindles shipped per million tonnes of world polyester output.

| Date | Input | What it moves |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 28 February 2025 | Mysteel: 1.83 Mt/y new filament capacity | China capacity |
| 1 April 2025 | S&P Global: production cuts, 31 days DTY stock | Cycle stress |
| 6 May 2025 | Rieter: Barmag sales CHF 734 million | Leader size |
| 20 June 2025 | ITMF: 1.04 million DTY spindles in 2024 | 2024 index |
| 18 September 2025 | Textile Exchange: 78 Mt polyester | Denominator |
| 18 November 2025 | India: 17 PLI applicants | India demand |
| 19 December 2025 | China: 92% filament operating rate | Utilisation |
| 23 January 2026 | NBS: 87.01 Mt chemical fibre in 2025 | Denominator growth |
| 2 February 2026 | Oerlikon: Barmag sale closed | Market structure |
| 16 April 2026 | Billion Industrial: margin 9.0% | Producer margins |
| 17 July 2026 | Rieter: Man-Made Fiber Division H1 | Order momentum |
| 24 July 2026 | ITMF: 808,000 DTY spindles in 2025 | 2025 index |

The finding, a Douglas Insights estimate: the index stood at about 13,400 spindles per million tonnes in 2024, from 1.04 million spindles over 78 million tonnes of polyester, and fell to about 10,000 in 2025, from 808,000 spindles over an estimated 81 million tonnes. Working back from ITMF's 2024 growth rates of 80% and 95% gives about 576,000 spindles in 2023, an index near 7,700 on an estimated 75 million tonnes. The three-year average is about 10,400.

The index changes how to read the market. At about 10,000 in 2025, shipments sit at the three-year mean, which suggests 2024 was a surge rather than a new normal and 2025 a return to trend. Douglas Insights therefore forecasts texturing demand from polyester growth and replacement at an index of 10,000 to 10,500, not from the 2024 peak.

## How does the methodology turn 1.00 million positions into USD 2.20 billion?

Our methodology multiplies about 1.00 million winding positions shipped in 2025 by an average USD 2,200 each to reach USD 2.20 billion, then grows positions 2.2% a year and price 1.5% a year.

The model covers 3 machine types, 3 fibres and 5 regions, using 46 data points, 17 sourced and 29 modelled. Positions come from ITMF's 808,000 texturing spindles plus about 170,000 POY and FDY winding positions and about 22,000 heat-setting ends, Douglas Insights estimates based on 2025 capacity additions. Arithmetic: 1.00 million x USD 2,200 = USD 2.20 billion; USD 2.20 billion x (1.022 x 1.015)^10 = USD 3.17 billion. Positions reach about 1.02 million in 2026 and 1.24 million in 2035.

Two cross-checks agree. First, if about 60% of Barmag's CHF 734 million of 2024 sales came from texturing, draw-winding and heat-setting equipment, that is about USD 529 million at a Douglas Insights rate of USD 1.20 per Swiss franc, or 24% of our 2025 market, matching our share estimate. Second, Rieter's five-month Man-Made Fiber Division sales of CHF 292.7 million annualise to about CHF 702 million, close to Barmag's 2024 level. AI tools help draft the text and automated checks test the arithmetic and links; the Douglas Insights research desk chooses the sources, builds the model and approves publication, as our [editorial standards](https://www.douglasinsights.com/research-methodology/) explain.

## What counts in the draw heat setting winder study, and what is excluded?

The draw heat setting winder study counts new draw-texturing machines, heated-godet draw-winding systems on POY, FDY and industrial yarn lines, and carpet yarn heat-setting lines. Extruders, staple fibre lines, air-jet texturing, spare parts and used machines are excluded.

The study splits value by 3 machine types, 3 fibres and 5 regions: Asia Pacific, Europe including Turkey, the Middle East and Africa, North America and Latin America. Fabrics made from the yarn appear in our [Technical Textiles Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/technical-textiles-market/) and [Smart Textiles Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/smart-textiles-market/) reports, and bio-based polymers in the [Biodegradable Polymers Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/biodegradable-polymers-market/) study.
