## Key takeaways

- Dry cleaning and laundry services are worth USD 118.64 billion in 2025 and USD 204.09 billion in 2035, a 5.57% CAGR.
- Commercial linen and uniform laundering holds 47.6% of revenue, USD 56.5 billion, from 112.5 billion pieces.
- Wash-and-fold and pickup-and-delivery laundry grows fastest at 8.93% a year to USD 44.1 billion in 2035.
- Cintas holds an estimated 7.27% share, rising to about 9.13% once its USD 5.5 billion UniFirst deal closes.
- Douglas Insights values North American dry cleaning revenue still on PCE machines at USD 4.58 billion before the 2034 ban.

Cintas signed an agreement to acquire UniFirst for about USD 5.5 billion on 10 March 2026, as disclosed in its [fiscal 2026 annual report](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/0000723254/000072325426000028/ctas-20260531.htm), and the deal shows where the dry cleaning and laundry service market keeps its weight: in route trucks and rental plants, not only in neighbourhood counters. The dry cleaning and laundry service market covers paid washing, dry cleaning, pressing and finishing of garments and textiles for households and businesses, including commercial linen and uniform laundering, self-service laundromats and app-based pickup; sales of washing machines and detergents sit outside the scope. Multiplying 152.4 billion laundered and cleaned pieces by an average USD 0.78 each gives USD 118.64 billion in 2025, and Douglas Insights projects USD 204.09 billion for 2035, a 5.57% revenue compound annual growth rate (CAGR). The study belongs to our [consumer goods and retail coverage](https://www.douglasinsights.com/industry/consumer-goods-retail/), and each figure is built under the [Douglas Insights research methodology](https://www.douglasinsights.com/research-methodology/).

## Who wins the uniform and linen route after the Cintas move on UniFirst?

Douglas Insights estimates that Cintas alone holds about 7.27% of 2025 dry cleaning and laundry service revenue, and that a combined Cintas and UniFirst would hold about 9.13%. The leader's edge rests on rental processing plants and delivery routes, while garment dry cleaning stays split among small owner-operated shops worldwide.

Cintas runs 496 operational facilities, including 210 rental processing plants, plus about 24,500 route and sales vehicles, and its Uniform Rental and Facility Services segment earned USD 8.62 billion in its last fiscal year. The UniFirst offer values each share at USD 310, paid as USD 155 in cash plus 0.7720 Cintas shares, and Cintas targets about USD 375 million of operating cost synergies within four years. UniFirst brings more than 270 service locations, over 300,000 customer locations and roughly 16,000 team partners. Our 7.27% share takes the full Cintas segment figure over the USD 118.64 billion base, so mats and restroom supplies inflate it slightly.

Elis is the European linen leader. Its [full-year results](https://fr.elis.com/sites/fr.elis.com/files/2026/03/11/20260311%20-%20Elis%20-%20Full-year%202025%20results.pdf) report EUR 4.80 billion of revenue with 3.8% organic growth, led by Latin America at 8.2% and Southern Europe at 6.7%, helped by Spanish hotel laundries Carsan and Bugaderia Neutral. Vestis is a US uniform and workplace supplies renter. Johnson Service Group serves hotel and restaurant linen in the United Kingdom through its HORECA division. Tide Services, the Procter and Gamble franchise arm, is the consolidator on the counter side: it converted 15 legacy drycleaning stores in 30 days and signed a 50-unit Tide Laundromat agreement with CMG Companies.

| Company | Position built on | Disclosed figure |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Cintas | Uniform rental routes and processing plants | USD 8.62 billion segment revenue, 210 rental processing plants |
| UniFirst | Workwear rental for industrial accounts | USD 2.22 billion core revenue, over 300,000 customer locations |
| Elis | Flat linen and workwear in Europe and Latin America | EUR 4.80 billion revenue, 3.8% organic growth |
| Vestis | Uniform and workplace supplies rental | USD 2.74 billion revenue |
| Johnson Service Group | Hotel and restaurant linen in the UK | GBP 535.4 million revenue, GBP 389.8 million HORECA |
| Tide Services (Procter and Gamble) | Franchised dry cleaners and laundromats | 15 stores converted in 30 days, 50-unit laundromat deal |

Douglas Insights puts the top three, Cintas, Elis at USD 5.42 billion and Vestis, at 14.1% of the market, using USD 1.13 per euro. Short verdict: the route is concentrated. The counter is not.

## Which service segment makes the money: commercial linen, garment dry cleaning or wash-and-fold?

Commercial linen and uniform laundering carries 47.6% of dry cleaning and laundry service revenue, or USD 56.5 billion in 2025, because hotels, hospitals and factories send out 112.5 billion pieces a year. Wash-and-fold and pickup-and-delivery laundry is the fastest segment, at 8.93% a year to 2035.

| Service segment | Share 2025 | Value 2025 | CAGR 2026-2035 | Value 2035 |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Commercial linen and uniform laundering | 47.6% | USD 56.5 billion | 5.21% | USD 93.8 billion |
| Garment dry cleaning | 17.9% | USD 21.2 billion | 2.87% | USD 28.2 billion |
| Wash-and-fold and pickup-and-delivery laundry | 15.8% | USD 18.7 billion | 8.93% | USD 44.1 billion |
| Self-service laundromats | 13.2% | USD 15.7 billion | 5.38% | USD 26.4 billion |
| Specialty textile care | 5.5% | USD 6.53 billion | 4.62% | USD 10.3 billion |

Commercial linen and uniform laundering earns USD 56.5 billion from 112.5 billion pieces at about USD 0.50 each, a low price on a huge, contracted volume of sheets, towels, scrubs and coveralls. Garment dry cleaning holds USD 21.2 billion from only 3.10 billion pieces, because a dry-cleaned garment averages USD 6.85, the second-highest price per piece in the market. Its 2.87% growth is the slowest, held down by solvent rules and casual office dress.

Wash-and-fold and pickup-and-delivery laundry is worth USD 18.7 billion across 17.9 billion pieces at USD 1.05. The segment grows fastest, at 8.93% a year to USD 44.1 billion, because apps and subscriptions turn an occasional chore into a weekly paid service. Self-service laundromats bring in USD 15.7 billion from 18.2 billion pieces at USD 0.86, sustained by renters without in-unit washers. Specialty textile care, covering leather, bridal gowns, duvets and curtains, adds USD 6.53 billion from 694 million pieces at USD 9.40, the highest price per piece. Chemistry suppliers to these plants are tracked in our [Surfactant Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/surfactant-market/) report.

## Why are hotels, hospitals and laundry-app users sending more textiles out?

Volume growth of 2.4% a year powers dry cleaning and laundry services. Four forces supply it: hotel and hospital linen outsourcing adds 0.9 points, uniform rental programmes add 0.6, app-based pickup and franchise conversion add 0.6, and apartment living in Asia adds 0.3.

### Hotel and hospital linen moves to outside plants

Outsourced flat linen is the largest single tailwind for laundry services, worth 0.9 points of the 2.4-point volume leg. Hotels shed on-premise laundries because a central plant washes sheets at about USD 0.50 per piece, a cost few in-house rooms match once labour and water are counted. Elis grew 8.2% organically in Latin America and 6.7% in Southern Europe, both regions where tourism capacity is expanding fastest. Hospitals add a hygiene argument: certified processing of scrubs, gowns and bed linen is easier to audit at a specialist plant, which is why healthcare contracts renew for years. Readers following infection control can compare this with our [Healthcare UV Disinfection Systems Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/healthcare-uv-disinfection-systems-market/) report.

### Uniform rental programmes widen the workwear base

Uniform rental contributes 0.6 points of laundry service volume. Douglas Insights counts more than 1.3 million business customer locations served by the two largest US renters, Cintas with more than one million businesses and UniFirst with over 300,000 customer locations. Each rented garment returns to a plant every week, so a single new account of 40 workers adds about 2,000 laundered pieces a year. Flame-resistant and high-visibility garments favour rental, because the renter tracks wash cycles and repairs for the employer.

### App-based pickup and franchise conversion

Pickup apps and branded franchises add 0.6 points of dry cleaning and laundry volume. Tide Services converted 15 independent drycleaning stores in 30 days and signed a 50-unit Tide Laundromat deal, while one New York franchisee committed to 18 more Tide Cleaners units for a total of 75 locations. Branded stores run lockers, apps and subscription plans; a 20-pound monthly wash-and-fold plan at USD 29.99 works out near USD 1.50 per pound, low enough to replace home washing for busy households.

### Apartment living across Asia Pacific

Smaller urban apartments add the final 0.3 points. Many new flats in Chinese, Indian and Southeast Asian cities have no room for a dryer, so laundromats and wash-and-fold counters fill the gap. The sum closes the leg: 0.9 plus 0.6 plus 0.6 plus 0.3 equals the 2.4-point volume growth of the dry cleaning and laundry service forecast.

## What headwinds do perchloroethylene bans and casual office dress create for dry cleaners?

Three headwinds define the slower case, where dry cleaning and laundry volume growth falls from 2.4% to 1.4% a year. Douglas Insights attributes 0.4 points of that loss to solvent phase-outs closing older dry cleaners, 0.35 points to casual and remote office dress, and 0.25 points to labour costs at counters.

Solvent rules remove the first 0.4 points. The [EPA perchloroethylene (PCE) rule](https://www.epa.gov/system/files/documents/2024-12/pce-fact-sheet_english.pdf) prohibits PCE in dry cleaning machines acquired after 16 June 2025, bans it in third-generation machines from 20 December 2027 and ends all PCE dry cleaning on 19 December 2034. California went first: its Air Resources Board set 1 January 2023 as the deadline to phase out perc dry cleaning machines. A small cleaner facing a machine swap often closes instead, which shrinks garment dry cleaning before alternatives such as wet cleaning or hydrocarbon systems fill the gap.

Office dress removes 0.35 points. A laundered shirt at USD 3.29 and a dry-cleaned suit at USD 19.81 are discretionary when staff work from home two or three days a week, so garment dry cleaning grows only 2.87% a year in the base case. Labour removes the last 0.25 points: pressing and finishing still need hands, and US consumer prices for laundry and dry cleaning services rose 4.60% in a single year, pushing price-sensitive households back to home machines.

## Where do laundromats and linen plants earn the most?

North America earns the most dry cleaning and laundry service revenue, USD 40.8 billion in 2025 or 34.4% of the total, because uniform rental is most developed there. Asia Pacific grows fastest at 7.48% a year to USD 71.0 billion in 2035, overtaking North America as apartment laundromats and pickup apps spread.

North America grows 4.52% a year to USD 63.5 billion, with route-based uniform programmes taking most of the value. Asia Pacific, at USD 34.5 billion in 2025, is the fastest region because household formation in dense cities favours wash-and-fold counters over home dryers. Europe holds USD 31.8 billion and grows 4.36% a year to USD 48.7 billion, led by hotel linen in Spain, France and the United Kingdom. Latin America is worth USD 6.64 billion and grows 6.37% a year to USD 12.3 billion, where Elis records its strongest organic growth. Middle East and Africa is the wildcard: USD 4.86 billion in 2025 rising 5.77% a year to USD 8.52 billion, depending on Gulf hotel openings and water costs, a theme covered in our [Washing Water Recycling System Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/washing-water-recycling-system-market/) report.

## How much does a laundered shirt or a pound of wash-and-fold cost the customer?

Dry cleaning and laundry services average USD 0.78 per piece in 2025, rising to USD 1.06 by 2035 at 3.1% a year. Counter bands run from about USD 1.75 per pound for wash-and-fold to USD 19.81 for a dry-cleaned suit, while contracted hotel linen sits near USD 0.50 per piece.

Published Tide Cleaners price lists show the spread on the counter. In Dallas, a laundered shirt costs USD 3.29, a dry-cleaned shirt USD 8.29, pants USD 8.39, a dress USD 13.99, a suit USD 19.81 and a comforter USD 36.75, with wash-and-fold at USD 2.49 per pound. Boston lists laundered shirts at USD 2.48 to USD 3.10 and wash-and-fold at USD 1.75 to USD 2.10 per pound. The US consumer price index for laundry and dry cleaning services rose 4.27% a year over the ten years to January 2025, faster than our 3.1% global price leg, because Asia Pacific tickets start lower and grow from a cheaper base.

| Service segment | Average price per piece 2025 | Pieces 2025 | Typical counter band |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Commercial linen and uniform laundering | USD 0.50 | 112.5 billion | Contract price per piece or per kilogram |
| Garment dry cleaning | USD 6.85 | 3.10 billion | USD 8.29 shirt to USD 19.81 suit |
| Wash-and-fold and pickup-and-delivery laundry | USD 1.05 | 17.9 billion | USD 1.75 to USD 2.49 per pound |
| Self-service laundromats | USD 0.86 | 18.2 billion | Coin or card per wash and dry cycle |
| Specialty textile care | USD 9.40 | 694 million | USD 36.75 to USD 45.00 for a comforter |

## What share of linen volume do hotels, hospitals and factories send to outside plants?

Hospitality sends the largest share of commercial linen volume, 41.3% of the 112.5 billion pieces processed in 2025, ahead of Industrial and workwear at 31.1% and Healthcare at 27.6%. Households buy most garment dry cleaning, wash-and-fold and laundromat services, a separate USD 62.2 billion pool.

| End user | Main services bought | Pricing basis |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Hospitality | Sheets, towels, table linen | Per piece or per kilogram contract |
| Healthcare | Bed linen, scrubs, gowns | Per piece with hygiene certification |
| Industrial and workwear | Rented uniforms, flame-resistant garments, mats | Weekly rental per garment |
| Households | Dry cleaning, wash-and-fold, laundromat cycles | Per item or per pound |

Johnson Service Group shows how hospitality concentrates the linen pool: its HORECA division earned GBP 389.8 million against GBP 145.6 million in workwear. Healthcare linen grows with hospital bed capacity. Industrial and workwear accounts follow employment in manufacturing, logistics and food processing.

## How fast is app-based pickup and delivery taking tickets from the dry cleaning counter?

App-based pickup and delivery takes 9.4% of 2025 dry cleaning and laundry service revenue, about USD 11.2 billion, against 39.8% for the store counter and 50.8% for route-based contract service. Douglas Insights expects the app share to reach 15.3% by 2035 as subscriptions spread.

| Channel | Share 2025 | Value 2025 |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Store counter | 39.8% | USD 47.2 billion |
| App-based pickup and delivery | 9.4% | USD 11.2 billion |
| Route-based contract service | 50.8% | USD 60.3 billion |

Route-based contract service covers the trucks of Cintas, UniFirst, Vestis and Elis. The store counter still serves most garment dry cleaning and every laundromat. App-based pickup and delivery wins because a locker or doorstep bag removes two trips a week; franchise systems such as Tide Cleaners bundle apps with their stores.

## What do the EPA perchloroethylene rules require of dry cleaners, and by when?

US dry cleaners face a 10-year phase-out of perchloroethylene under the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA), ending on 19 December 2034, with no new PCE machines allowed since 16 June 2025. The rule was [published on 18 December 2024](https://advocacy.sba.gov/2024/12/18/epa-finalizes-risk-management-of-perchloroethylene-under-the-toxic-substances-control-act) and took effect on 17 January 2025. Dates matter here.

Most other PCE uses received a 3-year phase-out, so dry cleaning got the longest runway. The EPA [reopened the rule for comment on 30 July 2025](https://advocacy.sba.gov/2025/07/31/epa-seeks-comment-on-reconsideration-of-perchloroethylene-regulation/), asking specifically how workplace controls and alternatives perform in dry cleaning, while the rule remained in litigation. A later proposal would push initial exposure monitoring to 21 June 2027 and exposure-limit compliance to 20 September 2027. A workplace chemical protection program (WCPP) governs PCE uses that remain allowed during the transition. Operators replacing machines usually choose professional wet cleaning or hydrocarbon solvents, both of which change detergent and water needs.

## What if the 2034 perchloroethylene ban holds: how large is laundry service revenue in 2035?

Dry cleaning and laundry services reach USD 204.09 billion in 2035 in the base case, from 2.4% volume and 3.1% price growth. A slower case lands at USD 176 billion and a faster case at USD 238 billion, depending on linen outsourcing and how many dry cleaners close at the solvent deadlines.

The slower case runs volume at 1.4% and price at 2.6%, a 4.04% revenue CAGR, with remote work and solvent closures biting harder. The faster case runs volume at 3.5% and price at 3.6%, a 7.23% CAGR, assuming the Cintas and UniFirst combination closes and route density lifts uniform rental penetration. One extra point on the volume leg adds about USD 20.8 billion to the 2035 figure; one point less removes about USD 19.1 billion. Outside forecasters publish growth rates of 6.8% to 8.3% a year for narrower scopes; our 5.57% sits below that band because commercial linen grows more slowly than consumer apps.

## Douglas Exclusive: the Dry Cleaning Solvent and Consolidation Calendar

The Dry Cleaning Solvent and Consolidation Calendar is a Douglas Insights count built from 21 inputs: 13 dated entries drawn from 8 primary documents. Those are 2 EPA and California Air Resources Board pages, 3 Small Business Administration advocacy notes, 2 Cintas SEC filings and 1 Elis results release. It is our compilation, not an official schedule, and it lists each deadline or deal that changes laundry service capacity.

| Entry | Date | Milestone | Source type |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 1 | 1 Jan 2023 | California perc machine phase-out deadline | CARB |
| 2 | 18 Dec 2024 | EPA final PCE rule published | SBA advocacy |
| 3 | 1 Jan 2025 | Elis consolidates Carsan, Spain | Elis results |
| 4 | 17 Jan 2025 | PCE rule takes effect | SBA advocacy |
| 5 | 1 Jun 2025 | Elis consolidates Bugaderia Neutral, Spain | Elis results |
| 6 | 16 Jun 2025 | No PCE in newly acquired dry cleaning machines | EPA |
| 7 | 30 Jul 2025 | EPA reopens PCE rule for comment | SBA advocacy |
| 8 | 10 Mar 2026 | Cintas agrees to acquire UniFirst | Cintas SEC filing |
| 9 | 12 Jun 2026 | UniFirst shareholders approve the deal | Cintas SEC filing |
| 10 | 21 Jun 2027 | Proposed initial PCE exposure monitoring deadline | SBA advocacy |
| 11 | 20 Sep 2027 | Proposed PCE exposure-limit compliance deadline | SBA advocacy |
| 12 | 20 Dec 2027 | PCE banned in third-generation machines | EPA |
| 13 | 19 Dec 2034 | All PCE dry cleaning prohibited | EPA |

The calendar's finding: Douglas Insights values the North American garment dry cleaning revenue still running on PCE machines at USD 4.58 billion, 11.2% of the region's laundry service revenue. We derive it as North America's USD 40.8 billion, times a 21.6% garment dry cleaning share, times an estimated 52% of cleaning volume still on PCE equipment. Nine of the 13 entries are solvent deadlines, so the next 9 years decide whether that revenue converts to wet cleaning or exits.

## What should a dry cleaning chain or linen operator do before the 2027 machine deadline?

Dry cleaning chains should replace third-generation PCE machines before the 2027 cut-off and price the switch against a USD 6.85 average garment ticket, while linen operators should buy route density. Wash-and-fold and pickup-and-delivery laundry, growing 8.93% a year, is the clearest place for new laundry capital.

For franchise systems, conversions of independent dry cleaners are cheap growth, because owners facing a machine swap often prefer to sell. For linen groups, Spanish and Latin American hotel contracts show the strongest organic growth. For investors, North America's 4.52% growth is slower than Asia Pacific's 7.48%, so deals there buy scale and synergies, not momentum.

## Which Census and inflation checks test the laundered-piece methodology?

The methodology counts 152.4 billion laundered and cleaned pieces in 2025 across 5 regions and 31 country models, built from 64 data points. Multiplying by the USD 0.78 average price per piece gives USD 118.64 billion; the five segment piece counts and prices add back to the same total.

Segment arithmetic: 112.5 billion pieces at USD 0.50, 3.10 billion at USD 6.85, 17.9 billion at USD 1.05, 18.2 billion at USD 0.86 and 694 million at USD 9.40 sum to 152.4 billion pieces and USD 118.64 billion; at 2.4% a year the count reaches 193.2 billion pieces in 2035. Cross-check one: the [Census Bureau](https://www.census.gov/) [Quarterly Services Survey](https://fred.stlouisfed.org/series/QREV8123TUSY) puts US employer revenue for drycleaning and laundry services at USD 36.2 billion across the four quarters of 2025, against our US estimate of USD 36.6 billion, a gap of 1.0% that matches non-employer laundromats outside the survey. Cross-check two: the US price index for laundry and dry cleaning services grew 4.27% a year for a decade, against our 3.1% global price leg, a gap explained by lower Asia Pacific tickets.
