Sartorius sold EUR 1,467 million in Europe, the Middle East and Africa in 2025, up 5.8% in constant currencies, yet said in its [results of 3 February 2026](https://www.sartorius.com/en/company/newsroom/corporate-news/preliminary-full-year-results-2025-sartorius-group-1793940) that bioprocess equipment declined as customers held back investment and lab instruments stayed muted; filters and single-use bags grew, the machines that use them did not. The Europe biotechnology instruments market covers manufacturer revenue from capital equipment used to study, engineer or manufacture biological molecules and cells in Europe: genomics instruments, chromatography and mass spectrometry, bioprocess instruments, cell analysis, microscopy and imaging, lab automation and spectroscopy. Douglas Insights sizes it at USD 11.2 billion in 2025, from about 117,000 instruments at an average realised price of USD 96,000, and at USD 18.8 billion in 2035, a revenue CAGR (compound annual growth rate) of 5.30%. The study is the European cut of our global [Biotechnology Instruments Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/biotechnology-instruments-market/) report, sits in our [life science instruments coverage](https://www.douglasinsights.com/industry/life-science-instruments/), and every figure follows the Douglas Insights [research methodology](https://www.douglasinsights.com/research-methodology/).

## Which European biotechnology instrument category carries the most value: mass spectrometry, sequencers or bioreactors?

Chromatography and mass spectrometry carry the most Europe biotechnology instruments value, 23.0% of 2025, USD 2.58 billion, because every European biologic is characterised before release. Bioprocess instruments grow fastest, 7.40% a year to USD 4.59 billion.

| Instrument category | Share 2025 | Value 2025 | CAGR 2026-2035 | Value 2035 |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Chromatography and mass spectrometry | 23.0% | USD 2.58 billion | 4.40% | USD 3.97 billion |
| Genomics instruments | 20.0% | USD 2.25 billion | 5.00% | USD 3.66 billion |
| Bioprocess instruments | 20.0% | USD 2.25 billion | 7.40% | USD 4.59 billion |
| Cell analysis instruments | 13.0% | USD 1.46 billion | 5.40% | USD 2.47 billion |
| Microscopy and imaging | 11.0% | USD 1.24 billion | 4.60% | USD 1.94 billion |
| Lab automation and liquid handling | 8.0% | USD 899 million | 6.60% | USD 1.70 billion |
| Spectroscopy and other instruments | 5.0% | USD 562 million | 3.00% | USD 755 million |

Chromatography and mass spectrometry lead in Europe, at USD 2.58 billion, a larger share than worldwide, because Germany, Switzerland, Ireland and Denmark host the release laboratories of Roche, Novartis, Novo Nordisk, Sanofi and the contract manufacturers that serve them, and each biologic batch needs identity, purity and glycan testing on liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (LC-MS) systems. The category grows 4.40% a year as replacement cycles of 7 to 10 years turn over. Genomics instruments, USD 2.25 billion, grow 5.00% a year on population genomics and oncology research in the United Kingdom, France and the Nordics; Oxford Nanopore Technologies, based in Oxford, raised its Europe, Middle East, Africa and India revenue 26.3% at constant currency to GBP 100.4 million in 2025, in its [annual results of 2 March 2026](https://a.storyblok.com/f/196663/x/eb9b67d55c/oxford-nanopore-annual-results-for-the-year-ended-31-december-2025-2-march-2026.pdf).

Bioprocess instruments, USD 2.25 billion, double to USD 4.59 billion and supply 30.8% of the value the Europe biotechnology instruments market adds by 2035, because every new biologics, GLP-1 and cell therapy suite is equipped from scratch with bioreactors, purification skids and process analytics; the gas-mixed corner is sized in our [Airlift Bioreactors Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/airlift-bioreactors-market/) report. Cell analysis, USD 1.46 billion, grows 5.40% a year with cell therapy release testing. Microscopy and imaging, USD 1.24 billion, is anchored by Carl Zeiss and Leica Microsystems at home. Lab automation, USD 899 million, grows 6.60% a year as European labs replace technician hours; spectroscopy and other instruments, USD 562 million, grow slowest. Category values for 2035 sum to USD 19.1 billion, 1.37% above the headline.

## Why do Europe's biotechnology instrument shipments rise 3.50% a year after the 2025 order pause?

Europe biotechnology instrument shipments rise 3.50% a year, from about 117,000 in 2025 to 165,000 in 2035, because biologics capacity, R&D spending, automation and genomics add 4.70 points of gross unit growth before restraints.

The research base is large and still growing. The European Union spent EUR 403.1 billion on research and development in 2024, up 3.6%, 2.2% of GDP, with business funding 66.5%, Eurostat reported on [4 December 2025](https://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/web/products-eurostat-news/w/ddn-20251204-2). Sweden, Belgium, Austria, Finland, Germany and Denmark spent 3.0% of GDP or more, and those countries buy a disproportionate share of Europe's biotechnology instruments.

### Biologics and GLP-1 manufacturing: 1.80 points

Biologics capacity adds 1.80 points. FUJIFILM Diosynth Biotechnologies added six 20,000-litre mammalian bioreactors at Hillerød, Denmark, taking the site to 12, and said its next phase adds eight more 20,000-litre bioreactors with full operation expected by 2026, in its [5 November 2024 release](https://fujifilmbiotechnologies.fujifilm.com/about/news/fujifilm-diosynth-biotechnologies-launches-first-phase-of-global-cdmo-ecosystem-expansion/). A single 20,000-litre train with purification and analytics can carry USD 20 million to USD 60 million of instruments, a Douglas Insights estimate.

### Pharma and academic R&D: 1.30 points

R&D adds 1.30 points: Europe's EUR 403.1 billion research spend buys mass spectrometers, cytometers and imagers that are replaced every 7 to 10 years.

### Laboratory automation: 0.90 points

Automation adds 0.90 points. A liquid handler from Tecan or Hamilton that runs overnight replaces two to three technician shifts in labs short of staff in Switzerland, Germany and the United Kingdom.

### Genomics and long-read sequencing: 0.70 points

Genomics adds 0.70 points, led by national sequencing programmes and by long-read platforms from Oxford Nanopore. The four contributions, 1.80 + 1.30 + 0.90 + 0.70, give 4.70 points.

The price leg adds 1.74 points a year. Douglas Insights projects the average realised price to rise from USD 96,000 in 2025 to USD 97,670 in 2026 and about USD 114,000 by 2035, as European buyers move to integrated, automated and higher-throughput systems.

## What slows Europe biotechnology instrument orders: equipment deferrals, public budgets or China?

Three restraints remove 1.20 points from Europe biotechnology instrument unit growth, leaving 3.50% a year. Capital deferrals by biopharma take 0.50 points, tight public research budgets 0.40 points and weaker export-linked demand 0.30 points.

Capital deferrals are the largest brake. Sartorius said its Lab Products and Services division grew only 0.2% in constant currencies to EUR 673 million in 2025, against 9.5% growth to EUR 2,865 million in Bioprocess Solutions, and that equipment business only stabilised through the year, per its [February 2026 release](https://www.sartorius.com/en/company/newsroom/corporate-news/preliminary-full-year-results-2025-sartorius-group-1793940). Tecan, of Männedorf, Switzerland, reported 2025 sales of CHF 882.5 million, down 1.6% in local currencies, and blamed academic and government instrument demand on budget uncertainty, in its [16 March 2026 results](https://www.nasdaq.com/press-release/tecan-presents-2025-results-and-provides-details-program-reignite-profitable-growth). Douglas Insights removes 0.50 points.

Public budgets remove 0.40 points: European universities and institutes buy about a quarter of instrument value, a Douglas Insights estimate, and national science budgets in France, Italy and the United Kingdom are under pressure. Export-linked demand removes 0.30 points: European instrument makers sell into China and the United States, and weaker demand there squeezes the margins and capacity they reinvest at home.

## Where in Europe are biotechnology instruments bought, and why do Denmark and Ireland grow fastest?

Germany buys the most Europe biotechnology instruments, USD 2.70 billion or 24.0% of 2025 value, Douglas Insights estimates. Denmark grows fastest, 6.60% a year to USD 1.06 billion by 2035, on GLP-1 and CDMO capacity.

| Country or sub-region | Value 2025 | Share 2025 | Value 2026 | CAGR 2026-2035 | Value 2035 |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Germany | USD 2.70 billion | 24.0% | USD 2.83 billion | 4.90% | USD 4.35 billion |
| United Kingdom | USD 1.68 billion | 15.0% | USD 1.78 billion | 5.40% | USD 2.85 billion |
| France | USD 1.24 billion | 11.0% | USD 1.29 billion | 4.80% | USD 1.97 billion |
| Switzerland | USD 1.01 billion | 9.0% | USD 1.07 billion | 5.40% | USD 1.71 billion |
| Benelux | USD 1.01 billion | 9.0% | USD 1.07 billion | 5.60% | USD 1.74 billion |
| Italy | USD 730 million | 6.5% | USD 767 million | 5.00% | USD 1.19 billion |
| Denmark | USD 562 million | 5.0% | USD 599 million | 6.60% | USD 1.06 billion |
| Spain | USD 505 million | 4.5% | USD 532 million | 5.30% | USD 847 million |
| Ireland | USD 449 million | 4.0% | USD 478 million | 6.40% | USD 836 million |
| Rest of Europe | USD 1.35 billion | 12.0% | USD 1.42 billion | 5.40% | USD 2.28 billion |

Germany leads Europe's biotechnology instruments market because it combines the largest pharmaceutical and chemical research base, 3.1% of GDP spent on R&D, the Max Planck, Helmholtz and Fraunhofer institutes and biologics plants of Boehringer Ingelheim, Roche and BioNTech; it also hosts Sartorius, Eppendorf, Bruker, Carl Zeiss and Qiagen. It grows 4.90% a year. The United Kingdom, USD 1.68 billion, grows 5.40% a year on the Oxford, Cambridge and London genomics and cell therapy cluster. France, USD 1.24 billion, grows 4.80%, led by Sanofi and its vaccine plants.

Switzerland, USD 1.01 billion, buys the most instruments per head in Europe through Roche, Novartis and Lonza. Benelux, USD 1.01 billion, includes Belgian vaccine and cell therapy plants and Dutch biologics sites. Denmark, USD 562 million, grows fastest, 6.60% a year, as Novo Nordisk and the Hillerød CDMO cluster add capacity, and Ireland, USD 449 million, grows 6.40% a year on biologics plants run by U.S. drug makers. Italy, Spain and the rest of Europe complete the map. Country values for 2035 sum to USD 18.8 billion, 0.09% above the headline; in the data table the row labelled Global holds the Europe total, USD 11.2 billion in 2025.

## Who supplies Europe's biotechnology instruments: Thermo Fisher, Danaher, Agilent, Merck or Bruker?

Thermo Fisher Scientific supplies the most Europe biotechnology instruments value, about 13.0% of 2025, USD 1.46 billion, Douglas Insights estimates. The five largest suppliers hold about 37.5%, so European instrument supply stays fragmented.

| Company | What the European position rests on | Estimated Europe share 2025 | Estimated value 2025 |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Thermo Fisher Scientific | Orbitrap mass spectrometry, cryo-EM from Eindhoven and Brno, PCR, bioprocess | 13.0% | USD 1.46 billion |
| Danaher | Cytiva bioprocess, SCIEX mass spectrometry, Leica Microsystems, Beckman Coulter Life Sciences | 11.0% | USD 1.24 billion |
| Agilent Technologies | Liquid chromatography and LC-MS for biopharma quality control | 5.0% | USD 562 million |
| Merck KGaA | Bioprocess systems and lab water, Darmstadt base | 4.5% | USD 505 million |
| Bruker | timsTOF mass spectrometry, NMR and spatial biology, Bremen and Ettlingen | 4.0% | USD 449 million |
| Sartorius | Bioreactors, filtration hardware, lab balances and cell analysis | 3.5% | USD 393 million |
| Waters | Liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry, Wilmslow centre | 3.5% | USD 393 million |
| Illumina | Short-read sequencers for national genomics programmes | 3.0% | USD 337 million |
| Carl Zeiss | Light and electron microscopy, Oberkochen and Jena | 2.5% | USD 281 million |
| Other suppliers | Eppendorf, Qiagen, Tecan, Hamilton, Oxford Nanopore, Shimadzu, Revvity, Bio-Rad and others | 50.0% | USD 5.62 billion |

The American leaders report segments rather than European instrument sales, so their European shares are Douglas Insights estimates. Thermo Fisher's Life Sciences Solutions segment grew 7.7% to USD 10.4 billion in 2025 while its Analytical Instruments segment grew 1.2% to USD 7.55 billion, in its [full-year 2025 results](https://ir.thermofisher.com/investors/news-events/news/news-details/2026/Thermo-Fisher-Scientific-Reports-Fourth-Quarter-and-Full-Year-2025-Results/default.aspx), and Danaher's Biotechnology segment grew 8.0% to USD 7.3 billion while its Life Sciences segment was flat, in its [28 January 2026 release](https://investors.danaher.com/2026-01-28-Danaher-Reports-Fourth-Quarter-and-Full-Year-2025-Results). European specialists win where a validated platform is hard to displace, Sartorius and Merck in bioprocess hardware, Bruker and Carl Zeiss in high-end research; adjacent chip-based tools are sized in our [Microfluidic Devices Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/microfluidic-devices-market/) report.

## What does a biotechnology instrument cost a European lab, from qPCR to cryo-EM?

A Europe biotechnology instrument fetched an average realised price of USD 96,000 in 2025, Douglas Insights estimates, from about USD 20,000 for a benchtop qPCR system to USD 7 million for a cryo-electron microscope. Integration adds 1.74% a year.

| Instrument | Typical European price, 2025 | Main buyer |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Benchtop qPCR system | USD 20,000 to USD 60,000 | Academic and biotech labs |
| Automated liquid handler | USD 60,000 to USD 300,000 | Pharma screening, genomics cores |
| Spectral flow cytometer | USD 150,000 to USD 400,000 | Immunology and cell therapy labs |
| High-resolution LC-MS system | USD 250,000 to USD 600,000 | Biopharma quality control |
| 2,000-litre single-use bioreactor with controls | USD 1 million to USD 2 million | Biologics plants and CDMOs |
| Cryo-electron microscope | USD 5 million to USD 7 million | Structural biology centres |

European list prices are usually quoted in euros and Swiss francs, and public buyers in France, Germany and Italy buy through tenders under the EU public procurement directives, which pushes discounts of 10% to 25% on research instruments, a Douglas Insights estimate. Vendors price instruments close to cost and earn their margin on consumables and service, which is why Sartorius' consumable-led Bioprocess Solutions grew 9.5% while its equipment fell. That pull-through, and outsourced testing, is excluded here and sized in our [Pharmaceutical Testing and Analytical Services Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/pharmaceutical-testing-and-analytical-services-market/) report.

## Which EU rules shape biotechnology instrument purchases: GMP Annex 1, the Machinery Regulation or the Biotech Act?

Three EU rule sets shape Europe biotechnology instrument purchases: GMP Annex 1, in operation since 25 August 2023; the Machinery Regulation (EU) 2023/1230 from 20 January 2027; and the Biotech Act proposed on 16 December 2025.

The revised Annex 1 of the EU good manufacturing practice guidelines in [EudraLex Volume 4](https://health.ec.europa.eu/medicinal-products/eudralex_en) requires a contamination control strategy for every sterile medicine, which pushes European plants toward closed single-use bioreactors, isolators and continuous environmental monitoring instruments; Annex 15 requires installation, operational and performance qualification of each system, adding 10% to 20% to the installed cost of a GMP instrument, a Douglas Insights estimate. The [Machinery Regulation (EU) 2023/1230](https://eur-lex.europa.eu/eli/reg/2023/1230/oj) replaces the Machinery Directive from 20 January 2027 and covers instruments with moving parts such as centrifuges, liquid handlers and automated bioreactor systems, so vendors are re-certifying European product lines and safety software.

The European Commission published its Biotech Act proposal on 16 December 2025, which would cut multinational clinical trial authorisation from 106 to 75 days and add a regulatory sandbox for novel health biotechnology products, [Covington reported](https://www.covingtonblogs.com/2025/12/17/european-commission-adopts-proposal-for-the-biotech-act/). Funding rules matter too: the Commission proposed EUR 175 billion for the tenth research framework programme, FP10, for 2028 to 2034 on 16 July 2025, the [Czech Liaison Office for Research reported](https://era.avcr.cz/en/news/The-European-Commission-has-published-a-proposal-for-a-new-Framework-Programme). Douglas Insights assumes the Biotech Act applies from 2028 and lifts European trial and pilot-plant instrument orders from then.

## What if biologics plants slip or the Biotech Act lands early: where does Europe biotechnology instruments end in 2035?

The Europe biotechnology instruments market ends 2035 between USD 15.3 billion and USD 22.3 billion across our three cases, around a base of USD 18.8 billion. Biologics capacity timing and public research budgets set the spread.

| Case | Unit leg | Price leg | 2035 value |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Slower | 2.20% | 0.90% | USD 15.3 billion |
| Base case | 3.50% | 1.74% | USD 18.8 billion |
| Faster | 4.60% | 2.40% | USD 22.3 billion |

In the slower case European biopharma keeps deferring equipment through 2027, FP10 is cut in budget talks and China substitution squeezes European vendors. In the faster case Danish, Irish and Swiss biologics plants open on schedule, the Biotech Act shortens trials from 2027 and automation spreads faster in German and British labs. One extra point of yearly unit growth adds USD 1.90 billion to 2035 Europe biotechnology instruments value; one point less removes USD 1.74 billion.

Our 5.30% sits below the 6.18% global rate and the 7.86% Asia Pacific rate in the Douglas Insights global model, because Europe's installed base is older and its public research budgets grow more slowly than China's, India's or South Korea's. Protein-analysis demand, a large part of the mass spectrometry segment, is detailed in our [Proteomics Technologies Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/proteomics-technologies-market/) report.

## Douglas Exclusive: the Europe Biotech Instrument Deferral Ledger

The Europe Biotech Instrument Deferral Ledger is a Douglas Insights model built from 8 sourced segment growth rates in the 2025 filings of 5 suppliers selling into Europe, measuring how far equipment orders lagged consumables in 2025.

| Supplier segment, 2025 | Mainly sells | 2025 growth |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Oxford Nanopore, Europe, Middle East, Africa and India | Sequencers with flow cells | +26.3% at constant currency |
| Sartorius Bioprocess Solutions | Consumables with equipment | +9.5% at constant currency |
| Danaher Biotechnology | Bioprocess consumables and equipment | +8.0% |
| Thermo Fisher Life Sciences Solutions | Reagents, bioprocess and PCR | +7.7% |
| Thermo Fisher Analytical Instruments | Mass spectrometry, chromatography, electron microscopy | +1.2% |
| Sartorius Lab Products and Services | Lab instruments and consumables | +0.2% at constant currency |
| Danaher Life Sciences | Research instruments and reagents | Flat |
| Tecan Life Sciences Business | Liquid handlers and readers | -1.0% in local currencies |

The finding, a Douglas Insights estimate: the median consumable-led segment grew 8.75% in 2025 and the median instrument-led segment 0.10%, a gap of about 8.65 points, while Sartorius said equipment stabilised through the year and guides Lab Products and Services to 2% to 6% growth for 2026. Douglas Insights reads 2025 as a European deferral year, not a lost one: the consumables growing at 8.75% run on instruments that are now 7 to 10 years old, so the 2026 Europe biotechnology instruments value of USD 11.8 billion, 5.30% above 2025, assumes deferred bioreactor and LC-MS orders return first.

## How does the methodology turn 117,000 instruments into USD 11.2 billion of Europe biotechnology instruments?

Our methodology multiplies about 117,000 Europe biotechnology instruments shipped in 2025 by an average realised price of USD 96,000 to reach USD 11.2 billion. Units come from ten country builds; prices from seven category bands.

The model covers 10 countries or sub-regions, 7 instrument categories and 4 buyer groups, and uses 96 data points, 24 sourced and 72 modelled. Arithmetic: 117,000 x USD 96,000 = USD 11,232 million; 11,232 x (1.0350 x 1.0174)^10 = USD 18,827 million, or USD 18.8 billion. Units reach about 121,000 in 2026 and 165,000 in 2035; the average price reaches USD 97,670 in 2026.

Two cross-checks agree. First, USD 11.2 billion matches the USD 11,228 million Europe row of our global biotechnology instruments model within 0.04%, and the 2035 value matches within 0.05%. Second, Sartorius' estimated 3.5% share, USD 393 million, is about 24% of its EUR 1,467 million of 2025 EMEA sales, consistent with a group whose European revenue is mostly consumables. AI tools help draft the text and automated checks test the arithmetic and links; the Douglas Insights research desk chooses the sources, builds the model and approves publication, as our [editorial standards](https://www.douglasinsights.com/research-methodology/) explain.

## What counts in the Europe biotechnology instruments market, and what is excluded?
