## Key takeaways

- The Europe home care chemicals market is worth USD 5.48 billion in 2025 and USD 7.50 billion in 2035, a 3.18% revenue CAGR.
- 2.88 million tonnes at an average USD 1,904 make up the 2025 base; tonnage grows 1.52% and price 1.64% a year.
- Surfactants hold 41.8% of value; enzymes grow fastest at 5.90% a year.
- Germany buys 18.4% of value, while Turkey grows fastest at 5.60% a year.
- Unilever's European prices fell 0.6% in the first half of 2026 while Clariant raised Care Chemicals prices 3.7%: brands buy performance per gram, not more tonnes.

Regulation (EU) 2026/405 on detergents and surfactants was adopted on 11 February 2026 and entered into force on 22 March 2026, replacing the 2004 detergents law with stricter biodegradability tests, digital labels, refill rules and a digital product passport, according to [EUR-Lex](https://eur-lex.europa.eu/eli/reg/2026/405/oj/eng); a few months later Unilever reported that its prices in Europe fell 0.6% in the first half of 2026, its [results of 28 July 2026](https://www.unilever.com/files/unilever-q2-2026-results-full-announcement.pdf) show. Europe's detergent chemistry now has to be rebuilt to a new law while shelf prices go nowhere. The Europe home care chemicals market covers the surfactants, builders and chelating agents, enzymes, polymers and rheology modifiers, solvents, bleaching agents and biocides, and fragrance ingredients sold to makers of laundry detergents, dishwashing products, surface and toilet cleaners and air fresheners in Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Italy, Spain and Portugal, Poland, Benelux, Turkey, the Nordic countries and the rest of Europe. Douglas Insights sizes it at USD 5.48 billion in 2025, from 2.88 million tonnes at an average USD 1,904 a tonne, and at USD 7.50 billion in 2035, a revenue CAGR (compound annual growth rate) of 3.18%. The study is the Europe cut of our global [Home Care Chemicals Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/home-care-chemicals-market/) report, sits in our [specialty chemicals coverage](https://www.douglasinsights.com/industry/specialty-chemicals/), and every figure follows the Douglas Insights [research methodology](https://www.douglasinsights.com/research-methodology/).

## Which home care chemicals carry the most value: surfactants, enzymes or polymers?

Surfactants carry the most home care chemicals value, 41.8% of 2025, USD 2.29 billion, because every laundry liquid, capsule and dish soap washes with them. Enzymes grow fastest, 5.90% a year to USD 1.21 billion by 2035.

| Ingredient | Share 2025 | Value 2025 | CAGR 2026-2035 | Value 2035 |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Surfactants | 41.8% | USD 2.29 billion | 2.55% | USD 2.95 billion |
| Builders and chelating agents | 14.6% | USD 800 million | 2.30% | USD 1.00 billion |
| Enzymes | 12.4% | USD 680 million | 5.90% | USD 1.21 billion |
| Polymers and rheology modifiers | 10.3% | USD 565 million | 3.30% | USD 781 million |
| Fragrance ingredients | 8.1% | USD 444 million | 3.60% | USD 633 million |
| Bleaching agents and biocides | 7.0% | USD 384 million | 2.20% | USD 477 million |
| Solvents | 5.8% | USD 318 million | 1.90% | USD 384 million |

Surfactants lead at USD 2.29 billion: linear alkylbenzene sulphonate (LAS), sodium lauryl ether sulphate (SLES), fatty alcohol ethoxylates and, in fabric softeners, esterquats. Their share is lower than the 44.3% in our global model because European laundry has already moved to concentrated liquids and capsules, which carry fewer kilograms of surfactant per wash, and because European brands spend more of each formula on enzymes and polymers. Surfactants grow 2.55% a year, mostly through price as bio-based and readily biodegradable grades replace petrochemical ones, a Douglas Insights estimate.

Builders and chelating agents, USD 800 million, grow 2.30% a year. Phosphates left European consumer laundry and dishwasher detergents years ago, so the category is now soda ash, zeolite, citrates and readily biodegradable chelates such as methylglycinediacetic acid (MGDA) and glutamic acid diacetic acid (GLDA), which dishwasher tablet makers buy in large volumes. Enzymes, USD 680 million, grow fastest at 5.90% a year because protease, amylase, lipase and mannanase let brands cut wash temperature and surfactant per load; Novonesis, the largest detergent enzyme maker, grew organic sales 8% in the first half of 2026 with Household Care "performing very well", its [announcement of 19 August 2026](https://view.news.eu.nasdaq.com/view?id=1459154) states.

Polymers and rheology modifiers, USD 565 million, grow 3.30% a year as soil-release, anti-redeposition and dye-transfer polymers are rebuilt to biodegradable chemistry. Fragrance ingredients, USD 444 million, grow 3.60% on scent boosters and premium fabric conditioners, even though encapsulated fragrance must be reformulated under the microplastics restriction. Bleaching agents and biocides, USD 384 million, grow 2.20%, and solvents, USD 318 million, grow only 1.90% because water-based surface cleaners keep replacing solvent-based ones. Ingredient values for 2035 sum to USD 7.43 billion, 0.86% below the headline.

By application, Douglas Insights estimates that laundry takes about 52% of 2025 value, dishwashing about 19%, surface cleaners about 15%, toilet cleaners about 8% and air fresheners about 6%. Laundry is the largest buyer of every ingredient group except biocides; dishwashing buys most of the chelates and a growing share of the enzymes.

## What drives home care chemicals demand up 3.18% a year while shoppers trade down?

Reformulation and new formats drive home care chemicals demand: tonnage rises 1.52% a year, from 2.88 million tonnes in 2025 to 3.35 million in 2035, and the average price per tonne rises 1.64% as formulas carry richer chemistry.

The drivers start from a weak base. EU chemical output in April 2026 was 1.6% lower than a year earlier and capacity use in manufacturing stood at 78.0%, below its 80.2% long-run average, [Cefic's Iris report of 2 July 2026](https://iris.cefic.org/editions/2026-04) shows. Home care chemistry holds up better than industrial chemistry because households keep washing, but growth comes from what goes into each wash rather than from more washes. Five drivers add 2.10 gross points of volume, each sized by Douglas Insights from brand and supplier disclosures.

### Concentrated liquids, capsules and cold wash: 0.55 points

Concentrates and capsules add 0.55 points of tonnage in higher-value ingredients. Procter & Gamble said Fabric Care organic sales grew by a low single digit in April to June 2026, driven mainly by volume growth led by Europe, its [results of 29 July 2026](https://us.pg.com/newsroom/news-releases/PG-Announces-Fourth-Quarter-and-Fiscal-Year-2026-Results/) state. Every move from powder to capsule shifts spending towards nonionic surfactants, enzymes, water-soluble films and polymers.

### Dishwashing, by hand and machine: 0.45 points

Dishwashing adds 0.45 points. Henkel reported a double-digit increase in Hand Dishwashing within Home Care in the first half of 2026, and Laundry & Home Care organic growth of 0.7%, its [release of 6 August 2026](https://www.henkel.com.au/press/press-releases-and-kits/2026-08-06-henkel-delivers-strong-sales-and-earnings-performance-in-the-first-half-and-upgrades-top-line-guidance-for-2026-2217762) shows. Machine dishwashing tablets are the largest single use of MGDA and GLDA and a fast-growing use of amylase.

### Central and Eastern Europe and Turkey: 0.50 points

Poland, Romania, Czechia and Turkey add 0.50 points as more households buy washing machines and dishwashers and trade up from powders to liquids, a Douglas Insights estimate. Turkey also exports detergents to the Middle East and Central Asia, so its plants buy more surfactant than its own households use.

### Surface hygiene and toilet care: 0.35 points

Disinfecting sprays, bathroom cleaners and toilet gels add 0.35 points. Reckitt's Germ Protection business, which includes Dettol and Lysol, grew like-for-like (LFL) net revenue 10.5% in the first half of 2026, its [half-year report of 29 July 2026](https://eu-assets.contentstack.com/v3/assets/blt93c8bc7a598af9f0/blt9afb200b87aba912/6a6c6632390a4cfb2bf139fb/HALF_YEAR_2026_RECKITT_BENCKISER_GROUP.pdf) shows; quaternary ammonium compounds, hypochlorite and lactic acid are the chemicals behind that category.

### Refill, microbial and stain-removal formats: 0.25 points

Refill stations, probiotic and microbial cleaners and stain removers add 0.25 points. Regulation (EU) 2026/405 brings refill sales and microbial cleaning products inside the law for the first time, with digital labels allowed for refills, according to the [UK government's explanatory memorandum of 2 March 2026](https://www.niassembly.gov.uk/globalassets/committee-blocks/windsor-framework-democratic-scrutiny-committee/reg-eu-2026405/e.-20260302-2026-405-ukg-em.pdf). The five contributions, 0.55 + 0.45 + 0.50 + 0.35 + 0.25, give 2.10 points.

The price leg adds 1.64 points a year. Douglas Insights projects the average from USD 1,904 a tonne in 2025 to USD 1,935 in 2026 and about USD 2,240 by 2035: biodegradable polymers and chelates add about 0.90 points, enzyme and fragrance mix 0.60 points and feedstock pass-through 0.50 points, while brand promotions take back 0.36 points.

## What holds back home care chemicals: promotions, compaction or ageing households?

Three restraints remove 0.58 points from home care chemicals tonnage growth, leaving 1.52% a year: compaction takes 0.25 points, promotion-led price cuts and private label 0.18 points, and shrinking Western households 0.15 points.

Compaction is the largest brake. A capsule or a concentrated liquid washes the same load with less water, filler and builder, so ingredient tonnes grow more slowly than the number of washes, and Douglas Insights removes 0.25 points. Concentration also cuts the demand for sodium sulphate and zeolite, which is why builders and chelating agents grow only 2.30% a year.

Shelf prices are the second. Unilever's Europe turnover was EUR 4.6 billion in the first half of 2026, with underlying sales down 0.9%, volume down 0.2% and price down 0.6%, while its Home Care business worldwide grew 7.6% almost entirely on volume, its [28 July 2026 results](https://www.unilever.com/files/unilever-q2-2026-results-full-announcement.pdf) show. Reckitt's Household Care LFL net revenue fell 6.6% in the same half, partly on heavy promotion in European automatic dishwashing, and its Europe LFL fell 3%, its [half-year report](https://eu-assets.contentstack.com/v3/assets/blt93c8bc7a598af9f0/blt9afb200b87aba912/6a6c6632390a4cfb2bf139fb/HALF_YEAR_2026_RECKITT_BENCKISER_GROUP.pdf) states. Discounters such as Lidl and Aldi push private-label detergents, so brand owners squeeze suppliers rather than raise prices; Douglas Insights removes 0.18 points.

Demographics are the third. Germany, Italy and the Nordic countries have ageing populations and small households, and the average Western European household already owns a washing machine and, in most countries, a dishwasher. Douglas Insights removes 0.15 points for that, and the feedstock base adds risk: European ethylene oxide and fatty alcohol plants compete with Asian and Middle Eastern imports, and closures raise the cost of local supply.

## Where in Europe are home care chemicals bought: Germany, France or Turkey?

Germany buys the most home care chemicals in Europe, USD 1.01 billion or 18.4% of 2025 value, Douglas Insights estimates. Turkey grows fastest, 5.60% a year to USD 501 million, and Poland follows at 4.70%.

| Country or sub-region | Value 2025 | Share 2025 | Value 2026 | CAGR 2026-2035 | Value 2035 |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Germany | USD 1.01 billion | 18.4% | USD 1.04 billion | 2.70% | USD 1.32 billion |
| France | USD 718 million | 13.1% | USD 739 million | 2.85% | USD 951 million |
| United Kingdom | USD 691 million | 12.6% | USD 712 million | 3.05% | USD 933 million |
| Italy | USD 559 million | 10.2% | USD 574 million | 2.55% | USD 719 million |
| Spain and Portugal | USD 488 million | 8.9% | USD 505 million | 3.40% | USD 682 million |
| Poland | USD 351 million | 6.4% | USD 367 million | 4.70% | USD 556 million |
| Benelux | USD 313 million | 5.7% | USD 321 million | 2.75% | USD 410 million |
| Turkey | USD 291 million | 5.3% | USD 307 million | 5.60% | USD 501 million |
| Nordic countries | USD 252 million | 4.6% | USD 260 million | 2.95% | USD 337 million |
| Rest of Europe | USD 811 million | 14.8% | USD 843 million | 3.90% | USD 1.19 billion |

Germany leads at USD 1.01 billion because it is home to Henkel's Persil and Pril, to large plants of brand owners and private-label makers, and to the ingredient sites of BASF, Evonik and Clariant. It grows 2.70% a year, below the European rate, because its households are already on concentrated liquids and capsules. France, USD 718 million, grows 2.85% on dishwasher tablets and eco-labelled cleaners; the United Kingdom, USD 691 million, grows 3.05% as capsules and fabric conditioners gain; Italy, USD 559 million, grows 2.55% with Europe's highest use of bleach and descaling products.

Turkey, USD 291 million, grows fastest at 5.60% because its detergent industry supplies the domestic market and exports, and its households are still moving from powders to liquids; it adds 10.4% of Europe's new value by 2035. Poland, USD 351 million, grows 4.70% on dishwasher ownership and on contract manufacturing for Western brands. Spain and Portugal, USD 488 million, grow 3.40%, Benelux, USD 313 million, 2.75%, and the Nordic countries, USD 252 million, 2.95%, where eco-labels such as the Nordic Swan shape formulas. The rest of Europe, USD 811 million, covering Romania, Czechia, Hungary, Greece, Austria, Switzerland, Ukraine and Russia, grows 3.90%. Country values for 2035 sum to USD 7.60 billion, 1.30% above the headline; in the data table the row labelled Global holds the Europe total. Faster-growing chemistry in the largest region is sized in our [Asia Pacific Home Care Chemicals Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/asia-pacific-home-care-chemicals-market/) report.

## Who supplies home care chemicals, and how concentrated are the suppliers?

BASF is the largest home care chemicals supplier with about 6.1% of 2025 value, USD 334 million, a Douglas Insights estimate. The top three, BASF, Novonesis and Evonik, hold about 14.5%; hundreds of surfactant, chelate and fragrance makers share the rest.

| Company | What the position rests on | Estimated share 2025 | Estimated value 2025 |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| BASF | Surfactants, MGDA chelates, polymers and enzymes from Ludwigshafen and other European sites | 6.1% | USD 334 million |
| Novonesis | Detergent enzymes: protease, amylase, lipase, mannanase and cellulase | 5.6% | USD 307 million |
| Evonik | Esterquats for fabric softeners and specialty surfactants | 2.8% | USD 154 million |
| Nouryon | GLDA chelates, polymers and surfactants for dishwashing and laundry | 2.6% | USD 143 million |
| Clariant | Ethoxylates, glucamides, polymers and preservatives | 2.4% | USD 132 million |
| Other suppliers | Sasol, Stepan, Kao Chemicals, Dow, Moeve, Croda, Innospec, Givaudan, dsm-firmenich, IFF, Symrise and regional surfactant makers | 80.5% | USD 4.41 billion |

All shares are Douglas Insights estimates because suppliers do not report European home care sales separately. Clariant said Care Chemicals sales rose 4.2% in local currency in April to June 2026, excluding portfolio pruning, with prices up 3.7% to offset higher raw material costs and growth in Personal & Home Care, its [release of 31 July 2026](https://www.clariant.com/Corporate/News/2026/07/Clariant-delivers-continued-strong-results-in-volatile-operating-environment--Court-dismisses-Shells) states. BASF said prices in its Nutrition & Care segment declined in the second quarter of 2026 while its earnings rose slightly, and that its Ludwigshafen restructuring raised the share of highly competitive units to 88%, its [release of 29 July 2026](https://www.basf.com/basf/www/global/en/media/news-releases/2026/07/p-26-123.html) shows.

The buyers are concentrated even though the suppliers are not. Henkel, Unilever, Procter & Gamble and Reckitt, together with private-label makers for Lidl, Aldi, Carrefour and Tesco, buy most of the region's detergent chemistry, a Douglas Insights estimate. Scale matters in enzymes, where a few fermentation plants supply the continent, and in chelates; it matters less in LAS and SLES, where Asian imports compete on cost per tonne. The same supply chain in North America is sized in our [U.S. Home Care Chemicals Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/u-s-home-care-chemicals-market/) report.

## What price does a tonne of home care chemicals fetch at the formulator's gate?

A tonne of home care chemicals sold to European formulators fetched an average USD 1,904 in 2025, Douglas Insights estimates, from about USD 300 for soda ash builders to over USD 18,000 for fragrance compounds.

| Ingredient | Typical price, 2025 | Main buyers |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Soda ash, zeolite and citrate builders | USD 300 to USD 650 a tonne | Powder and tablet makers |
| LAS and SLES surfactants | USD 1,400 to USD 2,100 a tonne | Liquid, powder and dish soap makers |
| Ethoxylates and esterquats | USD 1,800 to USD 2,700 a tonne | Capsule and fabric conditioner makers |
| MGDA, GLDA and polymers | USD 2,000 to USD 4,500 a tonne | Dishwasher tablet and liquid makers |
| Liquid enzyme formulations | USD 7,000 to USD 15,000 a tonne | Premium laundry and dishwashing makers |
| Fragrance compounds | USD 18,000 to USD 45,000 a tonne | Fabric conditioner and air care makers |

The bands are Douglas Insights estimates from supplier price notices and trade data. The European average of USD 1,904 sits 17.7% above the USD 1,618 world average in our global model because European formulas use more enzyme, polymer and chelate per tonne and less cheap builder. Ingredient prices moved in two directions in 2026: Clariant raised Care Chemicals prices 3.7% in the second quarter while BASF's Nutrition & Care prices fell, according to the July 2026 releases cited above, so specialty additives held price while commodity surfactants and chelates gave some back. The average rises to USD 1,935 a tonne in 2026 and about USD 2,240 by 2035 in our base case.

## Which rules govern home care chemicals: Regulation (EU) 2026/405 or the microplastics restriction?

Two rule sets govern home care chemicals most: Regulation (EU) 2026/405 on detergents and surfactants, in force since 22 March 2026 and applying 42 months later, and the microplastics restriction, which sets 17 October 2028 for detergents.

Regulation (EU) 2026/405 repeals Regulation (EC) No 648/2004. It applies 42 months after entry into force, from September 2029, and keeps stricter ultimate biodegradability tests for surfactants while adding them for other organic ingredients and for encapsulating polymers such as capsule films, with transition periods of 3 and 5 years, according to [EUR-Lex](https://eur-lex.europa.eu/eli/reg/2026/405/oj/eng) and the [UK government memorandum](https://www.niassembly.gov.uk/globalassets/committee-blocks/windsor-framework-democratic-scrutiny-committee/reg-eu-2026405/e.-20260302-2026-405-ukg-em.pdf). It also requires a digital product passport for each model, an EU authorised representative for non-EU makers, and rules for microbial cleaning products. For chemical suppliers it means re-testing polymers and film-forming ingredients and favouring readily biodegradable grades.

Commission Regulation (EU) 2023/2055, in force since 17 October 2023, restricts intentionally added synthetic polymer microparticles: detergents, waxes, polishes and air care products must be below 0.01% by 17 October 2028 and encapsulated fragrances by 17 October 2029, according to [EUR-Lex](https://eur-lex.europa.eu/eli/reg/2023/2055/oj). Fragrance houses are rebuilding microcapsules around biodegradable shells, which is one reason fragrance ingredients grow 3.60% a year in this report. Registration under REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals) and hazard labels under CLP (Classification, Labelling and Packaging) still apply to every ingredient.

## What if promotions persist or reformulation speeds up: how large are home care chemicals in 2035?

Home care chemicals end 2035 between USD 6.43 billion and USD 8.47 billion across our three cases, around a base of USD 7.50 billion. Price competition among brands and the pace of reformulation set the spread.

| Case | Volume leg | Price leg | 2035 value |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Slower | 0.60% | 1.00% | USD 6.43 billion |
| Base case | 1.52% | 1.64% | USD 7.50 billion |
| Faster | 2.30% | 2.10% | USD 8.47 billion |

In the slower case the European price cuts seen at Unilever and the dishwashing promotions seen at Reckitt last for years, private label gains share and compaction speeds up. In the faster case Regulation (EU) 2026/405 and the microplastics deadline push brands into higher-value biodegradable polymers, chelates and enzymes sooner, and Central European and Turkish households trade up faster. One extra point of yearly volume growth adds USD 776 million to 2035 value; one point less removes USD 703 million.

Our 3.18% matches the Europe row of the Douglas Insights global model and sits below the 3.83% global rate, because Asia Pacific grows 4.62% a year and the Middle East and Africa 5.21% on new detergent users, while this market grows mainly by reformulating what it already buys.

## Douglas Exclusive: the Detergent Shelf-Price Squeeze Ledger

The Detergent Shelf-Price Squeeze Ledger is a Douglas Insights model built from 12 figures in 8 dated company, regulator and industry releases of 2026, comparing what brand owners charge shoppers with what their chemical suppliers charge them.

| Date | Figure | Direction |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 22 March 2026 | Regulation (EU) 2026/405 enters into force | Reformulation cost up |
| 2 July 2026 | EU chemical output -1.6% in April 2026; capacity use 78.0% | Supply base weak |
| 28 July 2026 | Unilever Europe price -0.6%, volume -0.2% | Shelf price down |
| 29 July 2026 | Reckitt Household Care LFL -6.6%; Europe LFL -3% | Promotion-led |
| 29 July 2026 | P&G Fabric Care growth led by Europe volume | Volume up |
| 29 July 2026 | BASF Nutrition & Care prices down | Commodity price down |
| 31 July 2026 | Clariant Care Chemicals price +3.7% | Specialty price up |
| 6 August 2026 | Henkel Laundry & Home Care +0.7%; Hand Dishwashing double digit | Brand growth slow |
| 19 August 2026 | Novonesis organic growth 8%; Household Care very strong | Enzyme demand up |

The finding, a Douglas Insights estimate: in the first half of 2026 Unilever's European prices fell 0.6% and Reckitt faced deep dishwashing promotions, while Clariant's specialty ingredient prices rose 3.7% and Novonesis grew about 8%. Brands are protecting volume on the shelf and paying for it by buying more performance per gram, enzymes, chelates and biodegradable polymers, and less bulk surfactant and builder. We therefore set enzymes at 5.90% a year and surfactants at 2.55%, and hold the European price leg to 1.64%, because brands cannot pass on more than that while discounters set the shelf price.

The ledger also explains why compaction does not shrink the value of the market. Each capsule or concentrated liquid that replaces a scoop of powder removes tonnes of builder but adds kilograms of enzyme and polymer that cost five to twenty times as much per tonne, so value per wash rises even as tonnes per wash fall. That shift is the main reason the price leg, 1.64%, is larger than the volume leg, 1.52%.

## How does the methodology turn 2.88 million tonnes into USD 5.48 billion of home care chemicals?

Our methodology multiplies 2.88 million tonnes of home care chemicals sold in Europe in 2025 by an average USD 1,904 a tonne to reach USD 5.48 billion. Tonnes come from ten country and sub-region builds.

The model covers 10 countries or sub-regions, 7 ingredient groups and 5 applications, and uses 96 data points, 21 sourced and 75 modelled. Arithmetic: 2.88 million tonnes x USD 1,903.6 = USD 5,482.5 million, or USD 5.48 billion; USD 5.48 billion x (1.0152 x 1.0164)^10 = USD 7.50 billion. Tonnage reaches 2.92 million in 2026 and 3.35 million in 2035; the average price reaches USD 1,935 in 2026.

Two cross-checks agree. First, USD 5.48 billion equals the Europe row of our global home care chemicals model, and its USD 7.50 billion 2035 value matches the global model's Europe row within 0.05%. Second, 2.88 million tonnes is 20.5% of the 14.1 million tonnes in that global model, consistent with Europe's 24.1% share of value at a higher average price. The surfactant base behind these tonnes is sized in our [Surfactant Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/surfactant-market/) report. AI tools help draft the text and automated checks test the arithmetic and links; the Douglas Insights research desk chooses the sources, builds the model and approves publication, as our [editorial standards](https://www.douglasinsights.com/research-methodology/) explain.

## What counts in the home care chemicals study, and what is excluded?

This home care chemicals study counts the first-sale value of seven ingredient groups sold to household cleaning product makers located in Europe. Finished detergents, personal care ingredients, industrial and institutional cleaning chemicals and packaging are excluded.

The by-ingredient split covers surfactants, builders and chelating agents, enzymes, polymers and rheology modifiers, solvents, bleaching agents and biocides, and fragrance ingredients; the by-application split covers laundry, dishwashing, surface cleaners, toilet cleaners and air fresheners; the by-country split covers Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Italy, Spain and Portugal, Poland, Benelux, Turkey, the Nordic countries and the rest of Europe. Ingredients are counted once, at the price the detergent maker pays, so surfactant made inside a brand owner's own plant is valued at the market price of the same grade, and water-soluble capsule film is counted inside polymers.
