## Key takeaways

- The flexible substrates market is worth USD 4.03 billion in 2025 and USD 7.97 billion in 2035, a 7.06% CAGR.
- About 1.30 billion square metres at an average USD 3.10 form the 2025 base; area grows 6.0% a year and price rises 1.0%.
- Polyimide holds 58.0% of value, but ultra-thin glass grows 10.0% a year to USD 1.57 billion by 2035.
- Qnity's Interconnect Solutions sales rose 30% to USD 759 million in the third quarter of 2026.
- The Foldable Substrate Content Ledger puts about USD 9 of substrate in a book-style foldable against USD 2.50 in a bar-type OLED phone.

Qnity Electronics, the electronic materials company that left DuPont on 1 November 2025, sold USD 759 million of Interconnect Solutions products in the third quarter of 2026, up 30% from USD 583 million a year earlier, its [results of 4 November 2026](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/0002058873/000205887326000039/exhibit991supplementalsche.htm) show. That business holds the Kapton polyimide films and Pyralux flexible laminates on which most flexible circuits are built. The flexible substrates market covers the thin, bendable base layers that flexible electronics are built on: polyimide (PI) film and varnish, including colourless polyimide, PET and PEN polyester films, ultra-thin glass (UTG) and metal foil. Douglas Insights sizes it at USD 4.03 billion in 2025, about 1.30 billion square metres at an average USD 3.10 per square metre, and at USD 7.97 billion in 2035, a 7.06% compound annual growth rate (CAGR). The study sits beside our [Foldable Smartphone Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/foldable-smartphone-market/), [Smartphone Display Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/smartphone-display-market/) and [PCB Four-Layer Board Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/pcb-four-layer-board-market/) reports; every figure follows the Douglas Insights [research methodology](https://www.douglasinsights.com/research-methodology/).

## Which flexible substrate material earns the most: polyimide, polyester, ultra-thin glass or metal foil?

Polyimide earns the most, 58.0% of 2025 flexible substrates value or about USD 2.34 billion, Douglas Insights estimates. Ultra-thin glass grows fastest, 10.0% a year to USD 1.57 billion by 2035, on foldable phones.

| Material | Share 2025 | Value 2025 | CAGR 2026-2035 | Value 2035 |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Polyimide film and varnish (incl. colourless PI) | 58.0% | USD 2.34 billion | 7.2% | USD 4.68 billion |
| PET and PEN polyester films | 17.0% | USD 685 million | 4.6% | USD 1.07 billion |
| Ultra-thin glass | 15.0% | USD 605 million | 10.0% | USD 1.57 billion |
| Metal foil and other substrates | 10.0% | USD 403 million | 5.0% | USD 656 million |

Polyimide leads because it is the only polymer that survives 300 °C to 400 °C soldering and thin-film transistor processing while staying bendable. Kaneka sells it as Apical and Pixeo, UBE as Upilex and Qnity as Kapton; UBE showed its Upilex, UPIA and UIP polyimides at K 2025 from 8 to 15 October 2025, its [notice of 1 October 2025](https://ube.com/ube/en/contents/chemical/polyimide/news/251001.html) states. Polyimide value grows 7.2% a year to USD 4.68 billion, a Douglas Insights estimate, as flexible circuits and OLED backplanes both need more area.

PET and PEN films, USD 685 million, grow the slowest at 4.6% because they serve lower-temperature uses such as touch sensors, printed electronics and membrane switches. Ultra-thin glass, USD 605 million, grows fastest at 10.0% a year because every book-style foldable phone now carries a glass cover layer under 100 micrometres thick. Metal foil and other substrates, USD 403 million, grow 5.0% on stainless and copper foils for flexible solar and battery tabs. Material values for 2035 sum to USD 7.98 billion, 0.14% above the headline.

## Where do flexible substrates go: flexible circuits, displays, solar and batteries, or wearables?

Flexible printed circuits take the most, 45.0% of 2025 value or about USD 1.81 billion, Douglas Insights estimates. Flexible solar cells and batteries grow fastest, 9.2% a year to USD 777 million by 2035.

| Application | Share 2025 | Value 2025 | CAGR 2026-2035 | Value 2035 |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Flexible printed circuits and laminates | 45.0% | USD 1.81 billion | 6.0% | USD 3.25 billion |
| Flexible and foldable displays | 35.0% | USD 1.41 billion | 8.2% | USD 3.10 billion |
| Flexible solar cells and batteries | 8.0% | USD 322 million | 9.2% | USD 777 million |
| Wearables, sensors and medical electronics | 12.0% | USD 484 million | 6.2% | USD 883 million |

Flexible circuits lead because every phone, laptop, camera module, battery pack and server board uses several of them. Qnity names flexible copper-clad laminates, coverlays and bonding sheets as its flex portfolio in a [release of 27 July 2026](https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20260727541116/en/) on an award from Zhen Ding, one of the largest makers of printed circuit boards. Circuit value grows 6.0% a year to USD 3.25 billion, a Douglas Insights estimate.

Displays, USD 1.41 billion, grow 8.2% a year as OLED moves from phones into laptops and tablets. BOE began mass production on an 8.6-generation AMOLED line in Chengdu on 17 June 2026, a CNY 63 billion plant built for 32,000 glass sheets a month, each 2.29 m by 2.62 m, the [Chinese government portal reporting Xinhua](https://eng.yidaiyilu.gov.cn/p/042PUEAD.html) states. Solar cells and batteries, USD 322 million, grow fastest at 9.2% on film-type perovskite cells, and wearables, sensors and medical electronics, USD 484 million, grow 6.2%. Application values for 2035 sum to USD 8.01 billion, 0.47% above the headline.

## What drives flexible substrate demand: foldables, 8.6-generation OLED, AI-era flexible circuits or flexible solar?

Flexible substrate area rises 6.0% a year in our base case, from about 1.30 billion square metres in 2025 to about 2.33 billion in 2035. Four drivers add 7.20 points of gross growth; three restraints remove 1.20 points.

### Flexible circuits for AI servers, phones and cars: 2.30 points

Flexible circuits are the largest driver, worth 2.30 points. Qnity's Interconnect Solutions sales rose 30% to USD 759 million in the third quarter of 2026, 29% on an organic basis, and the segment's adjusted operating EBITDA rose to USD 236 million from USD 152 million, its [supplemental schedules of 4 November 2026](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/0002058873/000205887326000039/exhibit991supplementalsche.htm) show. Group net sales reached USD 1.56 billion, up 22%. Douglas Insights estimates that a high-end AI server tray uses about 3 times the flexible circuit area of a 2022 server, and that flexible circuit area worldwide grows about 5.5% a year to 2035.

### 8.6-generation IT OLED lines: 1.80 points

Larger OLED plants add 1.80 points. BOE's Chengdu line, built at a cost of USD 9.3 billion, began volume output on 17 June 2026 with designed capacity of 32,000 substrates a month, [Xinhua reported](https://eng.yidaiyilu.gov.cn/p/042PUEAD.html). Samsung Display, whose third-quarter 2026 revenue was KRW 8.0 trillion with operating profit of KRW 1.1 trillion, plans IT sales growth in 2027 from the "ramp-up of its new 8.6G IT line", [Samsung Electronics said on 29 October 2026](https://news.samsung.com/global/samsung-electronics-announces-third-quarter-2026-results). Douglas Insights estimates that a 14-inch OLED laptop panel needs about 7 times the polyimide backplane area of a phone panel.

### Foldable phones and ultra-thin glass: 1.90 points

Foldables add 1.90 points. Apple unveiled iPhone Duo, which it calls "the first foldable iPhone", with a 7.6-inch inner display and a starting price of USD 1,999 on 9 September 2026, and put it on sale on 23 October in more than 70 countries, the [Apple Newsroom announcement](https://www.apple.com/newsroom/2026/09/apple-unveils-iphone-duo/) states. Samsung launched the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, Fold8 and Flip8 in 106 markets from 7 August 2026, its [release of 6 August 2026](https://news.samsung.com/global/samsung-officially-launches-galaxy-z-fold8-ultra-fold8-flip8-watch-ultra2-and-watch9) shows, after Fold7 and Flip7 pre-orders in the United States each rose more than 25% on the previous generation, [Samsung US said on 31 July 2025](https://news.samsung.com/us/galaxy-z-fold7-achieves-record-breaking-milestone-in-the-us/). Douglas Insights estimates that a book-style foldable carries about USD 9 of substrate against about USD 2.50 in a bar-type OLED phone.

### Flexible solar cells and batteries: 1.20 points

Thin-film energy adds the last 1.20 points. Sekisui Chemical makes film-type perovskite cells roll to roll under Japan's Green Innovation Fund and plans a first 100 MW line by 2027 and a gigawatt-scale line by 2030, with web width rising from 30 cm to 1 m, [NEDO reported on 5 December 2025](https://green-innovation.nedo.go.jp/en/article/perovskite-solar-cell/); accelerated tests point to about 10 years of life. Douglas Insights estimates each gigawatt of film perovskite needs about 5 million square metres of barrier-coated PET or PEN. Summed, 2.30 + 1.80 + 1.90 + 1.20 = 7.20 points, a Douglas Insights estimate.

## What holds flexible substrate volume back: PFAS rules, weaker device demand or thinner films?

Three restraints remove 1.20 points a year from flexible substrate volume growth: weaker consumer device demand takes 0.50 points, PFAS restrictions 0.40 points and thinner, more area-efficient designs 0.30 points.

Device demand is the heaviest drag because phones, tablets and laptops still take most display and circuit area. Corning's Glass Innovations segment, which now holds its display glass business, had third-quarter 2026 sales of USD 1.51 billion, down 3% from USD 1.56 billion, and net income of USD 328 million, down 10%, with end markets "impacted by memory pricing", its [results of 27 October 2026](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/0000024741/000002474126000273/glw-20261027xex99xq32026.htm) state. Douglas Insights estimates that a 10% rise in phone prices from memory costs cuts phone unit demand by about 3%.

PFAS rules take 0.40 points because fluorinated polyimides, release films and some colourless polyimide grades use fluorine chemistry. The European Chemicals Agency's risk assessment committee adopted its opinion on a universal PFAS restriction on 2 March 2026, its socio-economic committee agreed a draft on 10 March, and 3,511 comments arrived by 25 May, [ECHA's June 2026 update](https://www.efsa.europa.eu/sites/default/files/2026-06/10.5.b_ECHA%E2%80%99s%20update%20on%20the%20REACH%20Restriction%20on%20PFAS_IFT.pdf) shows. Thinner films take the last 0.30 points: a 12.5 micrometre film does the work a 25 micrometre film once did, so area grows faster than tonnage but slower than device count, a Douglas Insights estimate.

## Which region uses the most flexible substrates, and where does demand grow fastest?

Asia Pacific uses the most flexible substrates, USD 2.90 billion or 72.0% of 2025 value, and also grows fastest, 7.3% a year to USD 5.87 billion by 2035, because panel, circuit and battery plants sit there.

| Region | Value 2025 | Share 2025 | Value 2026 | CAGR 2026-2035 | Value 2035 |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Asia Pacific | USD 2.90 billion | 72.0% | USD 3.11 billion | 7.3% | USD 5.87 billion |
| North America | USD 443 million | 11.0% | USD 473 million | 6.6% | USD 840 million |
| Europe | USD 403 million | 10.0% | USD 429 million | 6.4% | USD 749 million |
| Latin America | USD 121 million | 3.0% | USD 128 million | 6.2% | USD 221 million |
| Middle East and Africa | USD 161 million | 4.0% | USD 172 million | 6.8% | USD 311 million |

Asia Pacific leads because China, South Korea, Japan and Taiwan host the OLED fabs, flexible circuit makers and battery plants that buy substrate by the roll. BOE's CNY 63 billion Chengdu line and Samsung Display's 8.6G IT line both sit in the region, and Sekisui's perovskite line is in Japan. Douglas Insights puts about 940 million square metres, 72% of world area, in Asia Pacific in 2025, with China alone at about 520 million.

North America, USD 443 million, grows 6.6% a year on aerospace, medical and defence flex circuits plus new solar plants protected by trade measures. Europe, USD 403 million, grows 6.4% on automotive electronics and medical wearables. Latin America, USD 121 million, grows 6.2% on Mexican electronics assembly, and the Middle East and Africa, USD 161 million, grows 6.8% on Gulf solar projects. Regional values sum to USD 4.32 billion in 2026, 0.02% above the headline, and USD 7.99 billion in 2035, 0.24% above it.

## Which companies lead the flexible substrates market?

Qnity leads flexible substrates with about 14% of 2025 value through Kapton film and Pyralux laminates, Douglas Insights estimates, ahead of Kaneka at about 10% and PI Advanced Materials, owned by Arkema, at about 9%.

| Company | Substrate lines | Latest reported figure | Source date |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Qnity Electronics | Kapton PI film, Pyralux laminates | Interconnect Solutions sales USD 759 million in Q3 2026, up 30% | 4 November 2026 |
| Kaneka | Apical and Pixeo PI film | Film prices per square metre up 20% from 16 April 2026 | 19 March 2026 |
| Arkema (PI Advanced Materials) | PI film and varnish | Advanced Materials sales EUR 3.44 billion in 2025, down 3.4% | 25 February 2026 |
| UBE Corporation | Upilex PI film, UPIA varnish | Polyimide range shown at K 2025 | 1 October 2025 |
| SCHOTT | Ultra-thin glass | Group sales EUR 2.83 billion in FY2024/25 | 20 January 2026 |
| Corning | Specialty and bendable glass | Glass Innovations sales USD 1.51 billion in Q3 2026, down 3% | 27 October 2026 |

Qnity has the broadest flexible circuit portfolio, and its Q3 2026 Interconnect sales of USD 759 million include plating chemistry and other products beyond film, so Douglas Insights estimates its substrate revenue at about USD 560 million a year. Kaneka raised prices of its Apical and Pixeo films by 20% per square metre for shipments from 16 April 2026, citing instability around the Strait of Hormuz and rising energy costs, its [notice of 19 March 2026](https://www.kaneka.co.jp/en/topics/news/2026/ennr2603194.html) states. Arkema, which owns PI Advanced Materials of South Korea, reported 2025 sales of EUR 9.07 billion, down 5.0%, and Advanced Materials sales of EUR 3.44 billion, its [full-year results of 25 February 2026](https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20260225543765/en/ARKEMA-Full-Year-2025-Results) show.

In glass, SCHOTT reported stable sales of EUR 2.83 billion and EBIT of EUR 230 million for its year to September 2025 and planned EUR 400 million of investment, its [release of 20 January 2026](https://www.schott.com/en-nl/news-and-media/media-releases/2026/schott-revenues-remain-stable-despite-challenging-market-conditions) shows. Corning launched Gorilla Glass Ceramic 3 on the Motorola razr fold, its [release of 27 February 2026](https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20260227039398/en/) states. Toray, Toyobo, Kolon Industries, Mitsui Chemicals, Taimide and dozens of Chinese film makers share the remaining 52%, a Douglas Insights estimate.

## How much does a square metre of flexible substrate cost, from polyester film to ultra-thin glass?

A square metre of flexible substrate sells for an average USD 3.10 in 2025, Douglas Insights estimates, from under USD 1 for commodity PET film to USD 40 to USD 120 for colourless polyimide and ultra-thin glass cover layers.

The price ladder follows heat resistance, optical clarity and thickness control. Standard 25 micrometre polyimide film for circuits sells at about USD 1.50 to USD 4 per square metre, a Douglas Insights estimate, and Kaneka's 20% price rise from 16 April 2026, set out in its [19 March 2026 notice](https://www.kaneka.co.jp/en/topics/news/2026/ennr2603194.html), moved part of that band up at once. Display-grade polyimide varnish is sold by the kilogram but costs about USD 15 to USD 30 per square metre of coated backplane, and ultra-thin glass costs USD 60 to USD 120 per square metre after chemical strengthening and cutting, Douglas Insights estimates.

Average price rises 1.0% a year in the base case, to about USD 3.42 in 2035, because ultra-thin glass and colourless polyimide gain share while commodity film prices drift down. Energy is the swing factor: Kaneka tied its 2026 rise to oil and power costs and warned of further increases. One square metre of ultra-thin glass is worth about 40 square metres of PET film, a Douglas Insights estimate, which is why a small rise in foldable output moves value more than area.

## What if foldables boom or device demand stalls: how large is the flexible substrates market in 2035?

The flexible substrates market ends 2035 between USD 5.97 billion and USD 10.4 billion across our three cases, around a base of USD 7.97 billion. Foldable volumes and laptop OLED adoption set most of the spread.

| Case | Area leg | Price leg | Revenue rate | 2035 value |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Slower | 4.00% | 0.00% | 4.00% | USD 5.97 billion |
| Base case | 6.00% | 1.00% | 7.06% | USD 7.97 billion |
| Faster | 8.00% | 1.80% | 9.94% | USD 10.4 billion |

In the slower case memory-driven phone price rises cut device units, OLED laptops stay a niche and PFAS limits force costly reformulation, taking 2.0 points off area growth and holding price flat. In the faster case foldables pass 10% of premium phone sales by 2030, two more 8.6G lines start and film perovskite reaches gigawatt scale on schedule, adding 2.0 points of area and 0.8 points of price. One extra point of yearly revenue growth adds about USD 777 million to 2035 value, a Douglas Insights estimate.

Live signals sit near the base case. Qnity's 30% Interconnect growth, the iPhone Duo launch and BOE's Chengdu start point up; Corning's 3% fall in Glass Innovations sales points down. The signal to watch is Samsung Display's 8.6G IT ramp in 2027: if laptop OLED panels from the line reach 10 million a year by 2028, Douglas Insights would raise display substrate growth by about 1 point.

## Which rules shape flexible substrates, from the EU PFAS restriction to US Section 232 duties?

Three rule sets shape flexible substrates: the EU's proposed universal PFAS restriction, US Section 232 tariffs on chips and polysilicon, and China's export controls on battery materials.

The chemicals layer is the slowest-moving but widest. ECHA's committees adopted and agreed their opinions on the universal PFAS restriction in March 2026, with the final socio-economic opinion expected by the end of 2026, and electronics and semiconductors is one of 14 sectors assessed in detail, [ECHA's update](https://www.efsa.europa.eu/sites/default/files/2026-06/10.5.b_ECHA%E2%80%99s%20update%20on%20the%20REACH%20Restriction%20on%20PFAS_IFT.pdf) shows. The EU also amended a RoHS exemption for lead in alloys through Delegated Directive (EU) 2025/2364, in force from 11 December 2025, [EUR-Lex](https://eur-lex.europa.eu/eli/dir_del/2025/2364/oj/eng) shows.

The trade layer is tightening. A US proclamation of 14 January 2026 placed a 25% duty on certain advanced computing chips and derivative products from 15 January 2026, the [White House](https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/2026/01/adjusting-imports-of-semiconductors-semiconductor-manufacturing-equipment-and-their-derivative-products-into-the-united-states/) states, and Proclamation 11052 adds a 15% duty on polysilicon and derivatives from 4 December 2026 with minimum import prices of USD 0.22 per watt for cells and USD 0.38 for modules, the [Federal Register notice of 11 August 2026](https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2026/08/11/2026-16400/adjusting-imports-of-polysilicon-and-its-derivatives-into-the-united-states) shows. China's Announcement No. 58 of 9 October 2025 placed lithium-ion cells of 300 Wh/kg or more and related materials under export licensing, [MOFCOM](https://www.mofcom.gov.cn/zcfb/blgg/gg/2025/art/2025/art_8ef8c6bf57e3437e826fcdf1c469aff8.html) states.

## Douglas Exclusive: the Foldable Substrate Content Ledger

The Foldable Substrate Content Ledger is a Douglas Insights model of 12 inputs: 8 company records and 4 government or official records, listed below. It measures how much substrate value a foldable phone adds over a bar-type OLED phone.

| Date | Input | What it moves |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 25 July 2025 | Samsung: Galaxy Z Fold7 and Flip7 on sale worldwide | Foldable volume |
| 1 November 2025 | Qnity separates from DuPont | Film supply |
| 5 December 2025 | NEDO: Sekisui 100 MW perovskite line by 2027 | Solar film demand |
| 14 January 2026 | White House: 25% Section 232 chip duty | Trade cost |
| 2 March 2026 | ECHA RAC: PFAS restriction opinion | Fluorinated film risk |
| 19 March 2026 | Kaneka: PI film prices up 20% | Film price |
| 17 June 2026 | BOE: Chengdu 8.6G AMOLED in mass production | IT panel area |
| 6 August 2026 | Samsung: Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra launch | Foldable volume |
| 9 September 2026 | Apple: iPhone Duo at USD 1,999 | Foldable volume |
| 27 October 2026 | Corning: Glass Innovations sales down 3% | Glass demand |
| 29 October 2026 | Samsung Display: 8.6G IT ramp and more foldables in 2027 | Panel mix |
| 4 November 2026 | Qnity: Interconnect sales up 30% | Circuit film demand |

The finding, a Douglas Insights estimate: a book-style foldable carries about USD 9 of substrate, made up of about USD 4 of ultra-thin glass, USD 3 of polyimide backplane and cover film, and USD 2 of extra flexible circuit around the hinge, against about USD 2.50 in a bar-type OLED phone. Each 10 million extra foldables therefore adds about USD 65 million of substrate value, and 30 million foldables a year would add about USD 195 million, or 4.8% of 2025 market value.

The ledger changes how to read 2027. With Apple and Samsung both selling book-style foldables, ultra-thin glass becomes the most price-sensitive part of the market, so Douglas Insights expects its value to grow 10.0% a year even if foldable prices fall, because area per device rises as inner screens grow toward 8 inches.

## How does the methodology turn 1.30 billion square metres into USD 4.03 billion?

Our methodology multiplies about 1.30 billion square metres of flexible substrate used in 2025 by an average USD 3.10 per square metre to reach USD 4.03 billion, then grows area 6.0% a year and price 1.0% a year.

The model covers 4 materials, 4 applications and 5 regions, using 64 data points, 22 sourced and 42 modelled. Area comes from a regional build: about 940 million square metres in Asia Pacific, 140 million in North America, 130 million in Europe, 40 million in Latin America and 50 million in the Middle East and Africa, Douglas Insights estimates drawn from panel capacity, circuit output and company disclosures. Arithmetic: 1.30 billion x USD 3.10 = USD 4.03 billion; USD 4.03 billion x (1.06 x 1.01)^10 = USD 7.97 billion. Area reaches about 1.38 billion square metres in 2026 and 2.33 billion in 2035.

Two cross-checks agree. First, our 14% Qnity share equals about USD 564 million, close to the USD 560 million we estimate for the substrate part of its USD 3.04 billion annualised Interconnect sales. Second, BOE's 32,000 substrates a month of 6.0 square metres each equal about 2.3 million square metres a year of polyimide backplane at one fab, about 1.3% of the roughly 175 million square metres of display substrate in our 2025 model. AI tools help draft the text and automated checks test the arithmetic and links; the Douglas Insights research desk chooses the sources, builds the model and approves publication, as our [editorial standards](https://www.douglasinsights.com/research-methodology/) explain.

## What counts in the flexible substrates study, and what is excluded?

The flexible substrates study counts polyimide, polyester, ultra-thin glass and metal foil base layers sold for flexible circuits, displays, solar cells, batteries, wearables and sensors. Rigid FR-4 laminates, rigid display glass, packaging films and release liners are excluded.

The study splits value by 4 materials, 4 applications and 5 regions: Asia Pacific, North America, Europe, Latin America, and the Middle East and Africa. Folding phones as finished devices appear in our [Foldable Smartphone Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/foldable-smartphone-market/) report, panels in the [Smartphone Display Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/smartphone-display-market/) study and rigid multilayer boards in the [PCB Four-Layer Board Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/pcb-four-layer-board-market/) report.
