The US Food and Drug Administration's drug centre approved 46 novel drugs in 2025, after 50 in 2024, its [novel drug approvals list](https://www.fda.gov/drugs/novel-drug-approvals-fda/novel-drug-approvals-2025) shows, and many of those biologics and injectables reach patients as freeze-dried powders that need a lyophilizer to make. The freeze drying equipment market covers the machines that remove water from frozen product by sublimation under vacuum: production lyophilizers for pharmaceuticals and biologics with their automatic loading and unloading systems, laboratory and pilot freeze dryers, industrial freeze dryers for coffee, fruit, meals and pet food, and home and small commercial units. Douglas Insights sizes it at USD 4.24 billion in 2025, about 140,000 square metres of shelf area shipped multiplied by USD 30,250 per square metre, and at USD 7.94 billion in 2035, a 6.49% compound annual growth rate (CAGR). ## Which freeze drying equipment segment is largest: pharmaceutical lyophilizers, food dryers or home units?

Pharmaceutical and biotech production lyophilizers are the largest freeze drying equipment segment, 59.5% of 2025 value or about USD 2.52 billion, Douglas Insights estimates. They also grow fastest, at 6.90% a year to 2035.

| Equipment segment | Share 2025 | Value 2025 | CAGR 2026-2035 | Value 2035 |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Pharmaceutical and biotech production lyophilizers, with loading systems | 59.5% | USD 2.52 billion | 6.90% | USD 4.91 billion |
| Food and beverage industrial freeze dryers | 22.1% | USD 936 million | 6.40% | USD 1.74 billion |
| Laboratory and pilot freeze dryers | 10.6% | USD 449 million | 5.40% | USD 760 million |
| Home and small commercial freeze dryers | 7.8% | USD 330 million | 5.00% | USD 538 million |

Production lyophilizers lead because each unit is a pressure vessel with 10 to 60 square metres of temperature-controlled shelves, a condenser at about minus 70 degrees Celsius, clean-in-place and steam-in-place systems and, since the revised European Union (EU) good manufacturing practice rules, an automatic loading system behind a barrier or isolator. Douglas Insights puts about 24,000 square metres of production shelf area into service in 2025 at about USD 105,000 per square metre, so the segment is worth USD 2.52 billion on only 17% of shipped area. At 6.90% a year it reaches USD 4.91 billion by 2035, a Douglas Insights estimate.

Food and beverage freeze dryers, USD 936 million, are larger machines priced far lower per square metre, about USD 17,000, because they run in batch tunnels or continuous lines for instant coffee, fruit, ready meals and pet food without sterile containment; they grow 6.40% as new coffee plants come on line. Laboratory and pilot freeze dryers, USD 449 million, serve formulation development, contract research and universities, and grow 5.40%. Home and small commercial units, USD 330 million, are the countertop and freestanding machines sold to households, preppers and small food brands, and grow 5.00%. Segment values for 2035 sum to USD 7.95 billion, 0.08% above the headline.

The segments behave differently through the cycle. A pharmaceutical lyophilizer is ordered 12 to 24 months before delivery and is specified with the drug's regulatory filing, so orders follow plant decisions rather than quarterly demand. Food freeze dryers follow commodity margins, especially the spread between green coffee and soluble coffee prices. Home units follow consumer credit and online promotions. Douglas Insights therefore models production lyophilizers from announced injectable capacity and the other three segments from end-market output.

## What drives freeze drying equipment demand: biologics capacity, freeze-dried food or Annex 1 upgrades?

Freeze drying equipment volume, measured in shelf area shipped, rises 4.30% a year in our base case, from 140,000 square metres in 2025 to about 213,000 in 2035. Three drivers add 5.60 points before restraints remove 1.30 points.

### Biologics and injectable plant investment: 2.40 points

New injectable capacity is the largest driver, worth 2.40 points. Johnson & Johnson raised its planned United States investment to more than USD 55 billion over four years, 25% more than the prior four, including a biologics plant of more than 500,000 square feet in Wilson, North Carolina, costing at least USD 2 billion, its [release of 21 March 2025](https://www.jnj.com/media-center/press-releases/johnson-johnson-increases-u-s-investment-to-more-than-55-billion-over-the-next-four-years) states. Eli Lilly plans a USD 3.5 billion injectable medicines and device plant in Pennsylvania, with construction from 2026 and operations in 2031, [DCAT Value Chain Insights reported on 5 February 2026](https://www.dcatvci.org/top-industry-news/lilly-investing-3-5-bn-in-new-us-injectable-mfg-facility/). Syntegon's pharma sales rose 22% in 2025 on biologics and injectables, lifting group revenue 10% to EUR 1.75 billion, its [results of 16 April 2026](https://www.syntegon.com/press/syntegon-record-year-2025-growth-pharma-performance/) show. Douglas Insights estimates that every USD 1 billion of sterile injectable plant spending buys about USD 60 million to USD 80 million of freeze drying equipment.

### Freeze-dried coffee, food and pet food: 1.60 points

Food demand adds 1.60 points. Food Empire is building an USD 80 million freeze-dried instant coffee plant with 5,400 tonnes a year of capacity in Binh Dinh, Vietnam, with construction from March 2025 to January 2028, [The Investor reported](https://theinvestor.vn/singapore-firm-to-deploy-80-mln-freeze-dried-instant-coffee-project-in-central-vietnam-d12161.html). Vintage Coffee and Beverages signed an agreement on 9 December 2025 for a 5,500-tonne freeze-dried coffee plant in Telangana, India, due for commissioning by March 2027, its [exchange filing](https://filingreader.com/news-wire/mumbai/2025-12-09/vintage-coffee-to-open-premium-freeze-dried-coffee-plant-in-telangana) shows. Each 5,000-tonne coffee line needs about 3,000 to 4,000 square metres of freeze-drying shelf area, a Douglas Insights estimate, so these two projects alone equal about 5% of a year's global food shelf shipments. Freeze-dried pet treats and camping meals add about 0.4 points of the 1.60.

### Annex 1 automation and replacement cycles: 1.60 points

Upgrades add 1.60 points. The revised EU Annex 1 on sterile manufacturing applied from 25 August 2023, except clause 8.123 on lyophilizer loading and unloading areas, which applied from 25 August 2024, the European Compliance Academy noted on [31 August 2022](https://gmp-compliance.org/gmp-news/finalised-the-revised-eu-annex-1-is-published); it pushes plants to replace manual loading with automatic systems and to retire dryers that cannot meet contamination-control strategies. China's State Council plan of 13 March 2024 targets equipment investment more than 25% above 2023 levels by 2027 across industry, agriculture and healthcare, its [large-scale equipment renewal plan](https://english.www.gov.cn/policies/latestreleases/202403/13/content_WS65f19f27c6d0868f4e8e50e2.html) states. Douglas Insights counts about 1.0 point from Annex 1 retrofits and 0.6 points from Chinese and Indian replacement of dryers older than 20 years. Summed, 2.40 + 1.60 + 1.60 = 5.60 points; less 1.30 points of restraints gives the 4.30% volume leg, and the 2.10% price leg lifts it to 6.49%.

## What holds back the freeze drying equipment market: delayed capex, Chinese price competition or trade friction?

Three restraints remove 1.30 points a year from freeze drying equipment volume growth: delayed pharmaceutical capital spending takes 0.60 points, Chinese overcapacity 0.40 points, and machinery trade friction 0.30 points.

Delayed spending is the heaviest drag. ATS Corporation, owner of SP Industries, reported life sciences revenue of CAD 1.52 billion in the year to 31 March 2026, up only 3.4%, with fourth-quarter revenue down 9.3% and the segment backlog down to CAD 1.08 billion from CAD 1.20 billion, which it put down to customers' capital-spending timing, its [results of 28 May 2026](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/0001394832/000139483226000017/ats-pressreleasexfy26q4.htm) show. Many drug makers paused orders in 2025 while United States tariff terms were unsettled, a Douglas Insights estimate.

Chinese overcapacity is the second drag. Shanghai Tofflon Science and Technology grew 2025 revenue only 4.45% to RMB 5.23 billion, with net profit of RMB 200 million, its [annual report summary of 29 April 2026](http://static.cninfo.com.cn/finalpage/2026-04-29/1225237992.PDF) shows, after first-half profit fell 59.7%; domestic bidding for lyophilizer lines has cut prices by an estimated 10% to 20% since 2023, Douglas Insights finds. Trade friction takes the last 0.30 points: German machinery exports fell 1.8% in 2025, with shipments to the United States down 8.0%, the German engineering federation VDMA reported, [Computer&AUTOMATION recorded](https://www.computer-automation.de/drives-en/vdma-machinery-exports-fall-by-1-8-percent-in-2025.htm).

## Which region buys the most freeze drying equipment, and where does demand grow fastest?

North America buys the most freeze drying equipment, USD 1.44 billion or 34.0% of 2025 value. Asia Pacific grows fastest, at 7.90% a year, and passes North America in 2032 in our model.

| Region | Value 2025 | Share 2025 | Value 2026 | CAGR 2026-2035 | Value 2035 |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| North America | USD 1.44 billion | 34.0% | USD 1.53 billion | 6.00% | USD 2.58 billion |
| Asia Pacific | USD 1.27 billion | 30.0% | USD 1.37 billion | 7.90% | USD 2.72 billion |
| Europe | USD 1.23 billion | 29.0% | USD 1.29 billion | 5.40% | USD 2.08 billion |
| Latin America | USD 169 million | 4.0% | USD 180 million | 6.00% | USD 303 million |
| Middle East and Africa | USD 127 million | 3.0% | USD 136 million | 7.20% | USD 255 million |

North America leads because it hosts the largest biologics pipeline, most of the home freeze dryer base and the injectable plants announced in response to tariff policy. IMA Life North America completed a USD 30 million, 120,000-square-foot plant in Tonawanda, New York, adding 70 jobs to build large pharmaceutical freeze dryers for customers such as Pfizer and Moderna, [Empire State Development announced on 24 September 2026](https://www.esd.ny.gov/esd-media-center/press-releases/governor-hochul-celebrates-completion-ima-life-north-americas-30). Asia Pacific, USD 1.27 billion, grows 7.90% on Chinese and Indian generic injectables, Korean biologics contract manufacturing and Vietnamese and Indian coffee plants.

Europe, USD 1.23 billion, grows 5.40%: it is the home of IMA, GEA, Syntegon, Optima and Martin Christ, and Annex 1 retrofits keep demand steady, but new plant spending is shifting toward the United States. Latin America, USD 169 million, grows 6.00% on Brazilian and Mexican vaccine and coffee lines, and the Middle East and Africa, USD 127 million, grows 7.20% on Saudi and Egyptian pharmaceutical localisation. Regional values sum to USD 4.51 billion in 2026, 0.05% below the headline, and USD 7.93 billion in 2035, 0.13% below.

## Which companies make freeze drying equipment, and how concentrated is the market?

IMA Group is the largest freeze drying equipment maker with about 10.5% of 2025 value, a Douglas Insights estimate, ahead of Syntegon with Telstar at about 9.5% and GEA at about 8.5%. The top three hold about 28.5%.

| Company | Freeze drying business | Latest filed figure | Estimated share 2025 |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| IMA Group | IMA Life, Bologna and Tonawanda; pharmaceutical lyophilizers and loading | USD 30 million Tonawanda plant completed, September 2026 | 10.5% |
| Syntegon | Waiblingen, Germany; Telstar lyophilizers and loading systems | Revenue EUR 1.75 billion, 2025 | 9.5% |
| GEA Group | Düsseldorf, Germany; pharmaceutical and RAY food freeze dryers | Revenue EUR 5.5 billion, 2025 | 8.5% |
| Shanghai Tofflon | Shanghai, China; lyophilizers and food freeze-drying systems | Revenue RMB 5.23 billion, 2025 | 7.0% |
| ATS Corporation | SP Industries, Warminster; production, pilot and lab freeze dryers | Life sciences revenue CAD 1.52 billion, year to March 2026 | 6.0% |
| Harvest Right | Utah, United States; home and scientific freeze dryers | More than 450,000 units sold, company claim | 5.5% |

GEA reported 2025 order intake of EUR 5.9 billion, up 6.7%, and revenue of EUR 5.5 billion with a 16.5% margin, its [results of 9 March 2026](https://www.gea.com/en/news/corporate/2026/gea-reports-profitable-growth-for-2025-and-expects-accelerated-revenue-growth/) show, and raised its 2026 guidance to 6% to 8% organic growth after second-quarter orders rose 14.2%, its [release of 21 July 2026](https://www.gea.com/zh/news/corporate/2026/strong-second-quarter-gea-raises-full-year-guidance-for-2026/) states. Syntegon said Telstar, bought from Azbil in October 2024, ran ahead of plan in its first year. Tofflon's international revenue rose about 64% to RMB 1.98 billion, 37.8% of the total, [Tencent News reported](https://news.qq.com/rain/a/20260429A04MK800) from the annual report.

Ownership is moving among smaller makers too. Artemis Capital Partners bought Millrock Technology, a New York maker of laboratory and pilot freeze dryers, in 2025 on undisclosed terms, [The Middle Market reported](https://www.themiddlemarket.com/latest-news/artemis-capital-partners-buys-millrock-technology). Truking Technology, Optima Pharma, Martin Christ, Labconco, Cuddon and Hosokawa hold most of the rest. No maker reports freeze dryer revenue separately, so every share in the table is a Douglas Insights estimate.

## How much does a freeze dryer cost, and where are equipment prices heading?

A freeze dryer costs a blended USD 30,250 per square metre of shelf area in 2025, Douglas Insights estimates, from about USD 6,000 for home units to USD 105,000 for sterile production lyophilizers. The price leg rises 2.10% a year.

Douglas Insights puts 2025 production lyophilizer prices at USD 80,000 to USD 140,000 per square metre of shelf, or USD 1.5 million to USD 6 million a unit, before an automatic loading and unloading system that adds USD 0.5 million to USD 2.5 million a line. Food freeze dryers sell at USD 12,000 to USD 25,000 per square metre, and laboratory units at USD 8,000 to USD 60,000 each. Harvest Right lists its home models at USD 1,795 for the small black unit to USD 4,495 for the extra-large stainless unit, and its Scientific Pro range at USD 3,395 to USD 5,495, its [price pages](https://harvestright.com/pages/home-freeze-dryers) showed in November 2026.

The blended figure reaches about USD 30,900 per square metre in 2026 and USD 37,200 in 2035. Richer specifications add about 3.0 points a year: Annex 1 pushes buyers toward isolators, automatic loading, wireless temperature probes and controlled nucleation. Chinese competition and larger food lines, which cost less per square metre, take about 0.9 points back. That is why prices rise faster than general inflation even while Chinese bids undercut European makers on standard lines.

## Will Section 232 pharmaceutical tariffs pull lyophilization lines into the United States?

Largely yes. The 2 April 2026 tariff proclamation charges up to 100% on imported patented drugs but cuts the rate for companies that build American plants, which favours new United States fill-finish and lyophilization capacity.

Proclamation 11020 sets 100% duties on listed patented drugs and ingredients, 20% for companies with approved onshoring plans and 0% for those that add most-favoured-nation pricing agreements, with a 15% all-in ceiling for the EU, Japan, Korea and Switzerland and 10% for the United Kingdom, the [Federal Register notice of 9 April 2026](https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2026/04/09/2026-06956/adjusting-imports-of-pharmaceuticals-and-pharmaceutical-ingredients-into-the-united-states) shows. Duties started on 31 July 2026 for large companies and 29 September 2026 for the rest, and generics and biosimilars pay nothing, [Covington summarised](https://www.cov.com/news-and-insights/insights/2026/04/trump-administration-announces-section-232-tariffs-on-patented-pharmaceuticals-and-ingredients).

Douglas Insights expects the onshoring route to dominate, because most large drug makers had already announced American plant spending before the proclamation. Freeze-dried biologics, antibody-drug conjugates and vaccines are the products most likely to be made in new United States plants, since their sterile lines cannot easily be moved later. The result is a shift in where lyophilizers are installed more than an increase in how many: North American shelf area grows about 1.0 point a year faster than it would without the tariff, while European new-build orders slow by a similar amount.

## Which rules govern freeze drying equipment, from Annex 1 to tariffs and supplier lists?

Four rule sets govern freeze drying equipment: EU Annex 1 for sterile manufacture, the 2026 United States pharmaceutical tariffs, the BIOSECURE Act on biotechnology suppliers, and food hygiene rules for industrial dryers.

Annex 1 requires a contamination control strategy for each sterile line and, under clause 8.123, protection of partially stoppered vials during transfer and loading into the dryer, which is why automatic loading systems now ship with most new pharmaceutical lyophilizers. The BIOSECURE Act became law on 18 December 2025 as section 851 of the fiscal 2026 National Defense Authorization Act, with the Office of Management and Budget due to list biotechnology companies of concern by December 2026 and existing contracts given five years, [Arnold & Porter advised](https://www.arnoldporter.com/en/perspectives/advisories/2025/12/the-biosecure-act-becomes-law-in-the-united-states); contract manufacturers that replace listed Chinese suppliers need new freeze drying capacity.

The EU and United States agreed a 15% all-inclusive ceiling on EU pharmaceuticals if section 232 duties applied, in their [joint statement of 21 August 2025](https://www.euronews.com/business/2025/08/21/eu-us-release-long-awaited-trade-statement-setting-15-all-inclusive-tariff-on-eu-goods), which limits the damage to European plants already making freeze-dried products. Food freeze dryers follow general hygienic design standards and national food safety rules, which change slowly and add little cost.

## What if biologics plants slip or onshoring accelerates: how large is the freeze drying equipment market in 2035?

The freeze drying equipment market ends 2035 between USD 5.82 billion and USD 10.2 billion across our three cases, around a base of USD 7.94 billion. Pharmaceutical plant spending sets most of the spread.

| Case | Volume leg | Price leg | Revenue rate | 2035 value |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Slower | 2.20% | 1.00% | 3.22% | USD 5.82 billion |
| Base case | 4.30% | 2.10% | 6.49% | USD 7.94 billion |
| Faster | 6.00% | 3.00% | 9.18% | USD 10.2 billion |

In the slower case announced United States injectable plants slip by two to three years, Chinese makers keep cutting prices and coffee projects stall on bean costs. In the faster case onshoring, BIOSECURE supplier changes and new freeze-dried biologics arrive together, and continuous freeze drying wins its first commercial lines. One extra point of yearly revenue growth adds about USD 746 million to 2035 value.

Published signals bracket the base case. GEA guides to 6% to 8% organic growth for 2026, Syntegon grew 10% in 2025, Tofflon 4.45% and ATS's life sciences segment 3.4%; our 6.49% revenue rate sits in the middle of that range.

## Douglas Exclusive: the Lyophilization Capacity Ledger

The Lyophilization Capacity Ledger is a Douglas Insights model built from 11 inputs, 7 company disclosures and 4 regulatory or statistical records, listed below. It estimates how much freeze drying equipment announced injectable plants will order to 2030.

| Date | Input | What it moves |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 25 August 2024 | Annex 1 clause 8.123 applies | Loading system retrofits |
| 21 March 2025 | Johnson & Johnson: more than USD 55 billion in the United States | New plant demand |
| 18 December 2025 | BIOSECURE Act signed | Supplier shifts |
| January 2026 | FDA: 46 novel drugs approved in 2025 | Product pipeline |
| 5 February 2026 | Lilly: USD 3.5 billion Pennsylvania injectable plant | New plant demand |
| 2 April 2026 | Proclamation 11020 on pharmaceutical tariffs | Plant location |
| 16 April 2026 | Syntegon: pharma sales up 22% | Order flow |
| 29 April 2026 | Tofflon: revenue RMB 5.23 billion | Chinese pricing |
| 28 May 2026 | ATS: life sciences backlog CAD 1.08 billion | Order timing |
| 21 July 2026 | GEA: orders up 14.2%, guidance raised | Order flow |
| 24 September 2026 | IMA Life Tonawanda plant completed | United States supply |

The finding, a Douglas Insights estimate: injectable and biologics plants announced in the United States since March 2025 will order about USD 1.1 billion to USD 1.4 billion of freeze drying equipment between 2026 and 2030, about 14% of global pharmaceutical lyophilizer spending in that period. Most orders land in 2027 and 2028, because dryers are specified 12 to 24 months before a plant starts validation.

The ledger also changes how to read weak quarters. A falling backlog at one maker, such as ATS in 2026, says more about when buildings are finished than about demand, so Douglas Insights times orders to construction milestones rather than to quarterly bookings.

## How does the methodology turn 140,000 square metres of shelf into USD 4.24 billion?

Our methodology multiplies about 140,000 square metres of freeze-drying shelf area shipped in 2025 by a blended USD 30,250 per square metre to reach USD 4.24 billion, then grows area 4.30% and price 2.10% a year.

The model covers 4 equipment segments and 5 regions, using 54 data points, 21 sourced and 33 modelled. Shelf area comes from four builds, all Douglas Insights estimates: about 24,000 square metres of production lyophilizers, 6,000 of laboratory and pilot units, 55,000 of food dryers and 55,000 of home units, each priced at the bands in the pricing section. Arithmetic: 140,000 x USD 30,250 = USD 4.24 billion; USD 4.24 billion x (1.043 x 1.021)^10 = USD 7.94 billion. Shelf area reaches about 146,000 square metres in 2026 and 213,000 in 2035.

Two cross-checks agree. First, the six named companies hold about 47% of our total, consistent with a market where Truking, Optima, Martin Christ and dozens of Chinese and Indian builders hold the rest. Second, our 6.49% revenue rate sits between ATS's 3.4% life sciences growth and Syntegon's 10%. AI tools help draft the text and automated checks test the arithmetic and links; the Douglas Insights research desk chooses the sources, builds the model and approves publication, as our [editorial standards](https://www.douglasinsights.com/research-methodology/) explain.

## What counts in the freeze drying equipment study, and what is excluded?

The freeze drying equipment study counts new freeze dryers and their loading, unloading and control systems at equipment makers' selling prices. Spray dryers, contract lyophilization services, spare parts, service contracts and vials are excluded.

The study splits value by 4 equipment segments and 5 regions: North America, Asia Pacific, Europe, Latin America and the Middle East and Africa. Outsourced sterile filling appears in our [Sterile Injectable Contract Manufacturing Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/sterile-injectable-contract-manufacturing-market/) report, and dried food demand in our [Dehydrated Food Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/dehydrated-food-market/) report.

## Market by segment

| Segment | Share | Value |
| --- | --- | --- |
