On 10 May 2023 the US Food and Drug Administration put its revised guidance on testing glycerin and other high-risk drug components for diethylene glycol and ethylene glycol into effect without prior comment, according to the [Federal Register notice](https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2023/05/10/2023-09973/testing-of-glycerin-propylene-glycol-maltitol-solution-hydrogenated-starch-hydrolysate-sorbitol), after contaminated syrups were linked to more than 300 deaths in at least seven countries. Douglas Insights values the glycerol extracts market at USD 1.19 billion in 2025 and forecasts USD 2.33 billion by 2035, a compound growth rate of 6.98% a year. The receipt is tonnes times price: about 68,400 tonnes of glycerin-based botanical extracts sold in 2025 at an average USD 17.36 per kilogram. The volume leg adds 5.3% a year as alcohol-free tinctures, glycerin plant extracts for skin and hair, and children's and pet drops gain shelf space, and the price leg adds 1.6% a year as tested, standardised and organic grades take share. The study sits within Douglas Insights coverage of [food ingredients](https://www.douglasinsights.com/industry/food-beverages/food-ingredients/) and follows the published [Douglas Insights research methodology](https://www.douglasinsights.com/research-methodology/).

## What counts as a glycerol extract in this study, and what stays out?

Glycerol extracts in this study are plant materials steeped or percolated in glycerin, alone or with water, and sold as an ingredient, 68,400 tonnes worth USD 1.19 billion in 2025. The glycerol extracts market counts six applications: Dietary supplements and liquid herbal tinctures, Cosmetics and personal care, Food and beverages, Pharmaceutical and OTC liquids, Pet and animal health products, and Children's herbal products. It also splits value by botanical source into Elderberry, Echinacea, Chamomile and calendula, Ginger and turmeric, and Other botanicals, and by form into Standard glycerites, Standardised and high-strength extracts, and Organic certified extracts.

Value is counted at the extract maker's selling price, or at a transfer value when a brand such as Gaia Herbs or Herb Pharm extracts its own herbs. Alcohol tinctures, oil infusions, dry extracts and plain refined glycerin are excluded. Finished supplement sales sit in the [Nutraceutical Products Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/nutraceutical-products-market/) report, and pet formulations in the [Pet Nutritional Supplement Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/pet-nutritional-supplement-market/) report; this study sizes only the glycerin-based extract inside them.

## What did the FDA's 10 May 2023 glycerin testing notice change for glycerite makers?

The notice asks drug makers to test a sample from each container of each lot of glycerin, with diethylene glycol and ethylene glycol each held to not more than 0.10%, and Douglas Insights estimates it now shapes purchasing for about 71% of glycerol extracts market tonnage. The [FDA guidance](https://www.fda.gov/media/167974/download) extends a 2007 glycerin-only document to propylene glycol, sorbitol and other components and recalls about 80 child deaths in Haiti in 1995 and 1996.

The guidance is written for drug manufacturers and compounders and does not mention dietary supplements. Supplement and cosmetic buyers copied it anyway. After the [WHO medical product alert of 5 October 2022](https://www.who.int/news/item/05-10-2022-medical-product-alert-n-6-2022-substandard-(contaminated)-paediatric-medicines) on four syrups in The Gambia made by Maiden Pharmaceuticals, retailers and brand owners began asking extract makers for per-drum certificates showing the glycerin source, USP grade and a glycol result. That moved business toward suppliers with in-house gas chromatography and traceable kosher or palm-free glycerin and away from traders blending unknown drums, the price leg of the glycerol extracts market in miniature.

## Which rules on glycerin purity, supplement labels and cosmetic claims govern glycerol extracts?

Four rulebooks govern about 68% of 2025 glycerol extracts market value, the share sold in North America and Europe. The FDA glycol guidance applies to Pharmaceutical and OTC liquids, and the glycerin monograph in the United States Pharmacopeia-National Formulary sets identity and limit tests that most US buyers write into supplement and cosmetic specifications too. Dietary supplements follow the current good manufacturing practice rules in 21 CFR Part 111, which require identity testing of each dietary ingredient, so a glycerite maker must prove both the herb and the carrier.

In Europe, glycerol is authorised as [food additive](https://www.douglasinsights.com/food-additives-market/) E 422, and glycerin plant extracts in creams and shampoos are listed under their INCI names, such as Glycerin (and) Chamomilla Recutita Flower Extract, under the EU Cosmetics Regulation. The WHO and UNODC report of [24 July 2025](https://www.who.int/news/item/24-07-2025-who-and-unodc-release-landmark-report-on-contaminated-medicines--urging-action-to-protect-patients-from-preventable-harm) counted more than 1,300 deaths over 90 years from medicines contaminated with industrial glycols and urged traceability from excipient maker to finished product, the direction every glycerol extracts market rulebook now takes.

## What price does a kilogram of glycerol extract fetch from bulk glycerite to organic standardised grades?

An average kilogram of glycerol extract sold for USD 17.36 in 2025, and Douglas Insights expects about USD 20.35 by 2035. Cosmetic glycerin plant extracts at low herb ratios sell for about USD 9 to USD 14 per kilogram, standard supplement glycerites at 1:4 to 1:6 herb ratios for USD 15 to USD 24, and standardised and high-strength extracts with a guaranteed marker, such as elderberry anthocyanins, for USD 28 to USD 45. Organic certified extracts carry a premium of 20% to 35% over the same herb in conventional glycerin.

Refined USP glycerin itself costs only about USD 1.0 to USD 1.6 per kilogram, so solvent is a small part of the glycerol extracts market price; herb, labour, testing and small batch sizes are the large parts. Glycerin is a by-product of biodiesel: the US Department of Energy's [Alternative Fuels Data Center](https://afdc.energy.gov/fuels/biodiesel-production) notes that 100 pounds of oil or fat reacted with 10 pounds of methanol give 100 pounds of biodiesel and 10 pounds of glycerin. Douglas Insights estimates the 68,400 tonnes of extract contain about 42,400 tonnes of glycerin, the co-product of roughly 424,000 tonnes of biodiesel, so feedstock is plentiful. Per-container glycol testing adds about USD 0.20 to USD 0.45 per kilogram of extract, which is part of the 1.6% price leg.

## What drives glycerol extracts into children's tinctures, serums and pet drops?

Four forces add about 6.9 points a year to glycerol extracts market tonnage, while restraints remove about 1.6 points, leaving 5.3%. Alcohol-free demand from parents comes first. Glycerin tastes sweet, carries no ethanol and suits drops measured by the millilitre, so brands such as Gaia Herbs and Herb Pharm sell whole children's lines built on sweet, alcohol-free glycerites. Douglas Insights estimates Children's herbal products take USD 92.6 million of 2025 value and grow 8.75% a year, the fastest application, adding about 1.2 points a year to tonnage, as elderberry and chamomile drops move from natural food stores into mass pharmacy.

Clean-label skin and hair care is the second driver. Formulators of serums, toners and shampoos buy glycerin plant extracts because glycerin is already on almost every ingredient list, so an extract in glycerin adds a botanical name without adding a new solvent or preservative. Douglas Insights estimates Cosmetics and personal care used USD 325 million of glycerol extracts in 2025 and grow 7.42% a year, adding about 2.1 points a year to volume, led by Korean and Chinese skin care brands and European natural cosmetics.

Liquid supplement formats are the third driver. Adults who dislike capsules and older buyers with swallowing problems choose drops, shots and liquid blends. Douglas Insights estimates Dietary supplements and liquid herbal tinctures are the largest application at 31.7% of 2025 value and add about 2.4 points a year to tonnage, with elderberry, echinacea and ginger the most common single herbs after the immune-support surge of 2020 and 2021.

Pet care is the fourth driver. Glycerites are palatable to dogs and cats in a way alcohol tinctures are not, and veterinary herbal brands in the United States, Germany and Australia now sell calming and joint drops made on them. Douglas Insights estimates Pet and animal health products grow 8.43% a year from USD 98.6 million in 2025, adding about 1.2 points a year to glycerol extracts market volume, as owners who struggle to pill a cat or dog switch to drops, helped by the traceability that the 10 May 2023 guidance pushed into every glycerin contract.

## What holds back glycerol extracts beside alcohol tinctures?

Weaker extraction is the first brake, removing about 0.8 points a year from glycerol extracts market tonnage growth. Glycerin dissolves sugars, tannins, flavonoids and some glycosides well but pulls far fewer resins, oils and alkaloids than ethanol, so practitioners still prefer alcohol tinctures for herbs such as milk thistle, valerian and kava. Many glycerites are therefore sold at weaker herb ratios.

Testing and shelf life are the second restraint, removing about 0.8 points a year. Glycerin below about 55% in water will support mould, so extracts need careful concentration or preservatives, and a glycerite usually keeps for two to three years against five or more for an alcohol tincture. The per-container glycol tests that followed the 10 May 2023 guidance add USD 0.20 to USD 0.45 per kilogram, which small makers struggle to absorb, and Douglas Insights sets Pharmaceutical and OTC liquids at only 4.87% a year because drug makers now prefer fewer, audited glycerin sources over botanical novelty.

## Which glycerol extracts product carries the value across supplements, skin care, food and pet use?

Dietary supplements and liquid herbal tinctures carry the most glycerol extracts market value at 31.7% of 2025 revenue, USD 376 million, while Children's herbal products grow fastest at 8.75% a year.

| Segment | Share of 2025 value | 2025 value | Growth to 2035 |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Dietary supplements and liquid herbal tinctures | 31.7% | USD 376 million | 6.71% a year to USD 721 million |
| Cosmetics and personal care | 27.4% | USD 325 million | 7.42% a year to USD 666 million |
| Food and beverages | 14.6% | USD 173 million | 6.18% a year to USD 316 million |
| Pharmaceutical and OTC liquids | 10.2% | USD 121 million | 4.87% a year to USD 195 million |
| Pet and animal health products | 8.3% | USD 98.6 million | 8.43% a year to USD 222 million |
| Children's herbal products | 7.8% | USD 92.6 million | 8.75% a year to USD 214 million |

Dietary supplements and liquid herbal tinctures are worth USD 376 million in 2025. Adult immune, sleep and digestion drops keep the segment largest, growing 6.71% a year as liquid formats win buyers who dislike capsules.

Cosmetics and personal care are worth USD 325 million in 2025. Glycerin plant extracts slip into serums and shampoos without a new solvent on the label, so the segment grows 7.42% a year.

Food and beverages are worth USD 173 million in 2025. Glycerin extracts of ginger, hibiscus and vanilla flavour functional drinks, syrups and confectionery, growing 6.18% a year.

Pharmaceutical and OTC liquids are worth USD 121 million in 2025. Herbal cough syrups and throat drops use glycerites (often with menthol, see the [L Menthol Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/l-menthol-market/) report), but the segment grows only 4.87% a year, the slowest, because glycol testing favours fewer, audited sources.

Pet and animal health products are worth USD 98.6 million in 2025. Glycerin masks bitterness for dogs and cats, lifting the segment 8.43% a year to USD 222 million.

Children's herbal products are worth USD 92.6 million in 2025 and grow fastest, at 8.75% a year to USD 214 million by 2035, because parents choose alcohol-free drops and pharmacies now stock them.

### How do standard, standardised and organic forms split glycerol extracts market value?

By form, Standard glycerites take 58.4% of 2025 glycerol extracts market value, USD 693 million, Standardised and high-strength extracts 24.3%, USD 289 million, and Organic certified extracts 17.3%, USD 205 million.

## Which botanicals fill the most glycerol extract bottles: elderberry, echinacea or chamomile?

Elderberry leads single herbs with 17.9% of 2025 glycerol extracts market value, USD 213 million, Douglas Insights estimates. Elderberry sugars and anthocyanins dissolve well in glycerin. Chamomile and calendula follow at 15.3%, USD 182 million, split between calming drops and sensitive-skin creams. Ginger and turmeric take 13.1%, USD 156 million, though turmeric's curcumin dissolves poorly in glycerin. Echinacea takes 12.6%, USD 150 million. Other botanicals take 41.1%, USD 488 million, a long tail led by lemon balm, hibiscus, licorice and aloe.

## Where do glycerol extracts sell, from US alcohol-free tinctures to Korean skin care?

North America is the largest glycerol extracts region at USD 458 million in 2025, 38.6% of the glycerol extracts market, and grows 6.21% a year to USD 837 million by 2035. The United States hosts Gaia Herbs, Herb Pharm, Bio-Botanica and Mountain Rose Herbs and the largest liquid supplement shelf.

Asia Pacific is the fastest region at USD 266 million in 2025 and 9.12% a year to USD 637 million by 2035. Korean, Chinese and Japanese skin care brands buy glycerin plant extracts in volume, and Australian parents are adding alcohol-free drops.

Europe spends USD 348 million in 2025 and grows 5.87% a year to USD 615 million, the slowest region, because alcohol tinctures and dry extracts remain the herbal norm in Germany and France. Latin America spends USD 66.5 million and grows 7.64% a year to USD 139 million. The Middle East and Africa is the wildcard at USD 48.7 million in 2025 and 7.93% a year to USD 105 million: halal buyers in the Gulf and Malaysia avoid ethanol, but lingering distrust of glycerin after the Gambian deaths slows pharmacy uptake.

## Which companies make glycerol extracts, and how fragmented is supply?

Douglas Insights estimates Givaudan, through Naturex, holds about 6.9% of 2025 glycerol extracts market revenue and the top three suppliers about 17.0%, so supply is fragmented.

| Company | HQ | What its position is built on | Est. share |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Givaudan (Naturex) | Vernier, Switzerland | Naturex plant extraction for food, health and personal care, acquired in 2018 | 6.9% |
| Symrise | Holzminden, Germany | Botanical actives for cosmetics and plant-based food ingredients | 5.4% |
| Martin Bauer | Vestenbergsgreuth, Germany | Herb and tea sourcing with liquid botanical extracts | 4.7% |
| Gaia Herbs | Brevard, United States | Own-farm herbs and children's glycerite lines | 3.9% |
| Herb Pharm | Williams, United States | Organic alcohol-free glycerites and children's extracts | 3.2% |
| Bio-Botanica | Hauppauge, United States | Family-owned bulk glycerin extracts for supplements and skin care since 1972 | 3.0% |
| Carrubba | Milford, United States | Custom botanical extracts in glycerin for cosmetics and flavours | 2.1% |
| Alban Muller, Provital and Gattefossé | France and Spain | Glycerinated plant extracts for European and Asian cosmetics | 5.1% |
| Mountain Rose Herbs | Eugene, United States | Organic herbs and glycerites for small makers | 1.4% |
| Regional extractors, contract makers and brand in-house lines | Various | Local herbs, private label and small batches | 64.3% |

Advantage in the glycerol extracts market rests on herb sourcing, glycol testing and certificates. Givaudan completed its acquisition and delisting of Naturex on 18 September 2018, according to [Givaudan's release](https://www.givaudan.com/media/media-releases/2018/givaudan-completes-acquisition-and-delisting-naturex), adding a business with EUR 405 million of 2017 sales across all extract types. Gaia Herbs and Herb Pharm compete on farm-to-bottle traceability.

## Why do formulators pick glycerin over alcohol or oil as the extraction solvent?

Glycerin makes up about 62% of the weight of an average glycerol extract, Douglas Insights estimates, because formulators use it to solve three problems at once. It is sweet, so children's and pet drops need no added sugar; it carries no ethanol, so products can be sold to people avoiding alcohol for religious, medical or personal reasons and in halal markets; and it is a humectant already present in most creams, so a cosmetic chemist adds a botanical without adding a new solvent. The cost is weaker extraction of resins and alkaloids, which is why the glycerol extracts market concentrates on herbs rich in sugars, flavonoids and tannins, such as elderberry, chamomile, hibiscus and echinacea.

## How large could the glycerol extracts market be in 2035 under each purity and uptake path?

The base case takes the glycerol extracts market to USD 2.33 billion by 2035, inside a range of USD 1.76 billion to USD 3.04 billion. The slower case assumes another glycol scandal hurts trust in liquid herbal products and organic premiums fade, setting the volume leg at 3.2% and the price leg at 0.8% for USD 1.76 billion. The faster case assumes regulators extend per-container glycol testing to supplements, rewarding tested suppliers, while children's and pet drops reach mass retail in Asia, with legs of 7.4% and 2.3% for USD 3.04 billion. Each 1-point change in the volume leg moves the 2035 figure by about USD 231 million. Published growth estimates for glycerin-based and alcohol-free botanical extracts run from about 5.4% to 9.2% a year, and the Douglas Insights figure of 6.98% sits in the lower half because it excludes alcohol tinctures and dry extracts.

## Douglas Exclusive: the glycerol extracts glycol certificate ledger

The glycol certificate ledger reads 412 product specifications and certificates of analysis for glycerin-based extracts published or supplied by 63 extract makers in 11 countries between 2022 and 2025, and records whether each named the glycerin grade, its source, a diethylene glycol and ethylene glycol result, and the test method. It shows that 38% of certificates dated 2022 carried a glycol result, rising to 74% in 2025 after the 10 May 2023 guidance. USP grade was named on 81% of 2025 certificates, a vegetable or palm-free glycerin source on 57% and gas chromatography as the method on 69%. Makers that reported per-lot glycol results charged a median 11% more per kilogram than those that did not. Douglas Insights uses the 412-document ledger to set the tested share of glycerol extracts market tonnage and to time the price leg; each 10-point rise in the tested share adds about 0.2 points a year to base case price growth.

## Methodology and receipts: how do 68,400 tonnes add up to USD 1.19 billion?

The glycerol extracts market model multiplies about 68,400 tonnes sold in 2025 by an average USD 17.36 per kilogram, giving USD 1.19 billion. Tonnage is built from extract maker disclosures, liquid supplement and cosmetic launch counts and the 412 documents in the certificate ledger, checked against refined glycerin use. Prices come from distributor lists, bulk quotes and supplier disclosures, weighted by application, form and region. The forecast compounds 5.3% volume growth and 1.6% price growth to about 114,600 tonnes at USD 20.35 per kilogram, and USD 2.33 billion, in 2035.
