## Key takeaways

- Granular biochar earns USD 93.2 million in 2025 from 81,640 tonnes at USD 1,142 per tonne.
- The base case reaches USD 267.9 million by 2035, a revenue CAGR of 11.14%.
- Granular fertiliser blends grow fastest at 14.42% a year after the EU CMC 14 category applied from 16 July 2022.
- North America leads with USD 34.3 million in 2025, while Asia Pacific grows fastest at 13.04%.
- Bulk granular char at USD 800 an acre fits inside the NRCS rate of USD 1,418.71, but the blended price scores 322.0 on our index.

Because Commission Delegated Regulation (EU) 2021/2088 added pyrolysis and gasification materials to the component list of the EU Fertilising Products Regulation, with effect from [16 July 2022](https://eur-lex.europa.eu/eli/reg_del/2021/2088/oj/eng), granular biochar can now travel inside a CE-marked fertiliser bag. Granular biochar is pyrolysed biomass carbon screened or agglomerated into free-flowing granules, typically sized to run through a fertiliser spreader or seed drill. The market covers granules sold for soil amendment and horticulture, granular fertiliser blends, turf and landscaping, stormwater and water filtration, and animal feed and litter, and it excludes powder and fines sold mainly into concrete. Douglas Insights sizes the Granular Biochar Market at USD 93.2 million in 2025: 81,640 tonnes at an average realised USD 1,142 per tonne. The 2035 value is USD 267.9 million, a revenue CAGR of 11.14% from 2026 to 2035, made of 12.35% annual tonnage growth and a 1.08% yearly price drift. The study belongs to our [agricultural inputs](https://www.douglasinsights.com/industry/chemicals-materials/agricultural-inputs/) coverage, and every step follows the [Douglas Insights research methodology](https://www.douglasinsights.com/research-methodology/).

## Who supplies granular biochar at scale, and how concentrated is the supplier field?

Douglas Insights estimates the top three suppliers hold 26.8% of 2025 granular biochar revenue, so no producer controls price. Wakefield leads on retail reach with an 11.2% share; the rest of the field splits between pyrolysis operators selling bulk granules and blenders folding char into fertiliser and compost.

Wakefield BioChar, based in Valdosta, Georgia, sells a plant-based char made from wood waste in more than 3,000 stores across the United States, plus Amazon. Its CarbonBoost blends add mycorrhizae, a sign that the retail granular biochar shelf now sells enriched products rather than plain carbon. Carbon Gold, at Clevedon in England, calls itself the UK's longest-established enriched-biochar company and holds a Royal Warrant and B Corp status; its range runs from a biochar tree fertiliser to a lawn improver for sports turf managers.

On the producer side, Carbonity in Port-Cartier, Quebec, was inaugurated on 22 May 2025 as a joint venture owned equally by Airex Energy, Groupe Rémabec and SUEZ, according to the [SUEZ release](https://www.suez.com/en/news/press-releases/inauguration-carbonite-canada-s-largest-biochar-plant). The plant starts at 10,000 tonnes of biochar a year from about 58,000 tonnes of forest residues, is planned to triple by the end of 2026, and has a Microsoft agreement for 36,000 carbon credits over its first three years. Airex Energy and SUEZ target 350,000 tonnes a year worldwide by 2035.

In Europe, [Carbofex](https://carbofex.fi/) in Nokia, Finland, has run its demonstration plant since 2017, carbonising up to 500 kg of wood chips an hour into 140 kg of char; the site is rated for 1,000 tonnes of biochar a year and its char is approved for the Agro Organic class of the European Biochar Certificate (EBC). Novocarbo in Hamburg sells EBC-certified char into urban greening and crop farming and books credits under the Puro.earth method. Biochar Now in Berthoud, Colorado, carries OMRI and BioPreferred listings, while PYREG supplies the carbonisation kit, with more than 55 systems delivered in over 14 countries.

## Which end use makes the money in granular biochar, and which grows fastest?

Soil amendment and horticulture makes the most money, at USD 36.0 million or 38.6% of granular biochar revenue in 2025. Granular fertiliser blends grow fastest, at 14.42% a year to USD 77.7 million by 2035, because a granule can share a spreader pass with the nitrogen and phosphate it carries.

| End use | Share 2025 | Value 2025 | CAGR 2026-2035 | Value 2035 |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Soil amendment and horticulture | 38.6% | USD 36.0 million | 10.08% | USD 94.1 million |
| Granular fertiliser blends | 21.7% | USD 20.2 million | 14.42% | USD 77.7 million |
| Turf and landscaping | 16.9% | USD 15.8 million | 9.16% | USD 38.0 million |
| Stormwater and water filtration | 13.4% | USD 12.5 million | 11.74% | USD 37.9 million |
| Animal feed and litter | 9.4% | USD 8.7 million | 8.37% | USD 19.4 million |

Soil amendment and horticulture, worth USD 36.0 million, leads because nursery growers, vineyards and market gardens buy granules by the bag or tote and work them into beds, rising 10.08% a year to USD 94.1 million. Granular fertiliser blends hold 21.7%, or USD 20.2 million, and earn the fastest rate because CE-marked blends opened a channel that powder never reached. Turf and landscaping takes 16.9%, or USD 15.8 million, growing 9.16% as golf, sports and street-tree crews specify char-amended rootzones. Stormwater and water filtration carries 13.4%, worth USD 12.5 million, and climbs 11.74% as municipal filter media buyers favour granules that do not wash out. Animal feed and litter is the smallest at 9.4%, or USD 8.7 million, and slowest at 8.37%, held back by feed-grade approval work.

By feedstock, wood residues dominate supply, crop residues supply most Asian granules, and animal manure char sells mostly into blends because it is denser. By channel, direct bulk sales serve growers and blenders, distributors and blenders carry the fertiliser route, and retail and online sell bags.

## Why are growers and fertiliser blenders buying more granular biochar each season?

Granular biochar tonnage rises 12.35% a year in our base case, and four forces supply every point of that. Douglas Insights puts the fertiliser-label opening at 4.62 points, carbon credit offtake at 3.41 points, US cost-share programmes at 2.58 points and the retail garden channel at 1.74 points.

The fertiliser-label opening is the largest lever, worth 4.62 points. Before the CMC 14 component category, a blender who wanted to add char to a granular fertiliser faced national rules in each country. Now a single conformity route covers the whole single market, provided the char meets an H/Corg ratio below 0.7 and the contaminant limits. Granular fertiliser blends respond fastest, growing 14.42% a year, because the granule format lets blenders co-granulate char with nutrients. Douglas Insights counts this as the single change that turned granular biochar from a garden product into a farm input in Europe.

Carbon credit revenue adds 3.41 points. A producer that sells a removal credit can price the physical granule lower. Novocarbo states that one tonne of its biochar stores about 2.5 to 2.9 tonnes of CO2 equivalent, and Wakefield claims about 2 pounds of CO2 removed per pound of char. At Carbonity, a 36,000-credit agreement with Microsoft underwrites the first three years, and 75,000 tonnes of CO2 equivalent a year at full capacity sit behind the char that reaches growers.

US cost-share support contributes 2.58 points. The Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) issued Conservation Practice Standard 336, Soil Carbon Amendment, in November 2022, and its [national standard page](https://www.nrcs.usda.gov/resources/guides-and-instructions/soil-carbon-amendment-ac-336-conservation-practice-standard) notes a review starting in October 2026. Vermont's 2025 version of the practice names biochar alongside compost as an eligible amendment. Payment schedules matter: North Carolina's soil and water staff have proposed a 75% maximum cost share for biochar.

Retail garden demand adds the last 1.74 points. Bagged granules are the format most homeowners first meet, and a 3,000-store shelf footprint for one brand shows how far the product has travelled from specialist nurseries. Garden buyers pay the highest price per tonne, so each bag sold adds more revenue than a bulk tonne, yet the number of new households trying char each season grows slowly. Retail growth is steady rather than steep, which is why Douglas Insights gives it the smallest share of the 12.35-point volume leg.

## Which bottlenecks keep granular biochar off most row-crop acres?

Three bottlenecks remove about 4.1 points from granular biochar tonnage growth: freight on a low-density product costs 1.9 points, contaminant testing and certification 1.3 points, and per-acre economics on commodity crops 0.9 points. Without them, volume would compound near 16.5% a year.

Freight is the heaviest drag. Woody char has a bulk density near 0.20 g/cm3, so one dry ton fills about 6.0 cubic yards, against 3.0 cubic yards for manure-derived char. Granulation raises density, but each extra 100 miles of haul still erodes margin on a product that sells for about USD 1,142 per tonne. Douglas Insights estimates freight costs the market 1.9 points of volume growth a year.

Testing removes 1.3 points. An EU fertiliser blender must prove the char holds no more than 6 mg/kg of PAH16, 20 ng WHO toxicity equivalents per kg of dioxins and furans and 0.8 mg/kg of ndl-PCB, and each batch from a new feedstock reopens that work. Smaller granular biochar plants carry those costs over fewer tonnes.

Per-acre economics remove 0.9 points. At a 4-ton-per-acre prescription, even USD 200-a-ton bulk char costs USD 800 an acre before spreading, which corn and wheat margins rarely carry without a subsidy or a credit.

## Where in the world is granular biochar bought, and which region is catching up?

North America buys the most granular biochar, at USD 34.3 million in 2025, on the strength of retail bags and US cost-share. Asia Pacific grows fastest, at 13.04% a year to USD 71.9 million by 2035, as crop-residue char replaces open burning of straw and husks.

North America climbs at 9.71% a year to USD 86.6 million by 2035, led by the United States, with Canadian tonnage rising once Carbonity triples. Europe holds USD 27.3 million today and reaches USD 77.2 million at 10.96% a year, the region where CE-marked granular fertiliser blends have the clearest legal path. Asia Pacific starts at USD 21.1 million, and its rate of 13.04% is the highest because rice husk and straw supply is cheap and close to farms. Latin America is worth USD 6.2 million and grows 11.52% a year to USD 18.4 million, pulled by plantation crops and carbon projects. The wildcard is the Middle East and Africa: only USD 4.3 million in 2025, but rising 12.37% a year to USD 13.8 million if desert-soil water retention projects scale.

## How much do buyers pay per tonne of granular biochar, from bulk tote to garden bag?

Granular biochar sells at an average realised USD 1,142 per tonne in 2025. Quotes span about USD 200 a ton for bulk woody char to about USD 2,700 a ton for bagged product. Douglas Insights expects the average to ease to about USD 1,024 by 2035 as larger plants spread fixed costs.

The clearest public price survey comes from the [North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services](https://www.ncagr.gov/divisions/soil-water-conservation/Soil%20%26%20Water%20-%20Biochar%20Presentation%20TRC%209.3.2026/download), whose September 2026 presentation reported quotes from 9 of 11 suppliers contacted. Woody biomass char was quoted at USD 200 and USD 225 per ton, forest residue char at USD 300 to USD 500 per bone dry ton, mill residual char at USD 200 delivered and swine manure char at USD 300 FOB. Priced by volume, the seven woody suppliers averaged USD 159 per cubic yard, with a median of USD 200. Bagged char ran USD 50 per 3 cubic foot bag, or USD 450 per cubic yard.

Converted at 6.0 cubic yards per dry ton, the cubic-yard quotes imply USD 954 to USD 1,200 per ton, close to our USD 1,142 blended figure. Granular product commands a premium over bulk fines because screening or agglomeration adds a process step and removes dust. Credit revenue pulls the other way: a producer with a removal-credit buyer can quote below cost on the char itself.

## Which rules decide whether granular biochar can carry a fertiliser or soil amendment label?

Two rule sets carry most granular biochar volume: the EU component category CMC 14, which sets 5 numeric limits, and the US NRCS soil carbon amendment practice, which funds application. Outside those, buyers lean on the European Biochar Certificate and organic input listings.

Under [Delegated Regulation (EU) 2021/2088](https://eur-lex.europa.eu/eli/reg_del/2021/2088/oj/eng), pyrolysis and gasification materials must show an H/Corg molar ratio below 0.7, at most 6 mg/kg of PAH16, 20 ng WHO toxicity equivalents per kg of PCDD/F and 0.8 mg/kg of ndl-PCB, and products holding them must stay under 30 g/kg of chlorine. Inputs exclude mixed municipal waste and sewage sludge, and additives may not exceed 25% of fresh input matter. The rule applies from 16 July 2022. In the United States, practice 336 leaves application rates to laboratory analysis of each granular biochar batch, while OMRI and BioPreferred listings, such as those Biochar Now holds, open organic and federal procurement buyers.

## How does carbon removal crediting change the economics of a granular biochar tonne?

Carbon removal credits let a granular biochar producer earn twice from one tonne, and at 2.5 to 2.9 tonnes of CO2 equivalent stored per tonne, the credit leg can match the product leg. Our model counts only granule sales, so credit income sits outside the USD 93.2 million total.

Credits change who buys granules and at what price. Carbonity's 75,000 tonnes of CO2 equivalent a year at full capacity, set against a 10,000-tonne starting output that triples, shows how credit buyers fund plants whose char then needs a market. The wider [Biochar Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/biochar-market/) report treats credit income as revenue; this granular study does not, which is why its per-tonne price reflects product value alone. Blended granules also overlap with the [Specialty Fertiliser Coatings Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/specialty-fertiliser-coatings-market/), where char-based coatings compete for the same spreader pass, and with bagged soil improvers in the [Lawn and Garden Consumables Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/lawn-and-garden-consumables-market/).

## What would move the granular biochar forecast for 2035 above or below USD 267.9 million?

The 2035 granular biochar value lands between USD 183.8 million and USD 368.6 million across our three cases, around a base of USD 267.9 million. Volume growth is the swing factor: a single extra point of annual tonnage adds USD 24.8 million to the 2035 value.

In the base case, tonnage grows 12.35% a year to about 262,000 tonnes and price drifts down 1.08% a year, giving USD 267.9 million. The slower case assumes CMC 14 blending stays a niche and credit prices soften, so volume grows 9.1% and price falls 1.9% a year, reaching USD 183.8 million. The faster case assumes Carbonity-style plants with credit offtake spread across North America and Europe and blenders adopt char widely, lifting volume to 15.2% with price falling only 0.4%, for USD 368.6 million. Published forecasts for granular biochar run from about 11.4% to 12.7% a year; our 11.14% sits just below that range because we let price ease rather than hold.

## Douglas Exclusive: the Granular Biochar Delivered-Cost Index

The Granular Biochar Delivered-Cost Index is a Douglas Insights model built from 13 inputs: 10 published price points from the North Carolina supplier survey, 2 volume-to-weight conversions and 1 application rate. It converts each price into the cost of treating one acre at 4 tons, then indexes that cost to the NRCS per-acre rate of USD 1,418.71, set at 100.

| Price point | Per ton | Per acre at 4 tons | Index (NRCS rate = 100) |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Woody biomass quote A, per ton | USD 200 | USD 800 | 56.4 |
| Woody biomass quote B, per ton | USD 225 | USD 900 | 63.4 |
| Mill residual, delivered, per ton | USD 200 | USD 800 | 56.4 |
| Swine manure char, FOB, per ton | USD 300 | USD 1,200 | 84.6 |
| Forest residue, low end, per bone dry ton | USD 300 | USD 1,200 | 84.6 |
| Forest residue, high end, per bone dry ton | USD 500 | USD 2,000 | 141.0 |
| Mean of seven woody suppliers, USD 159 per CY | USD 954 | USD 3,816 | 269.0 |
| Proposed cost-share rate, USD 160 per CY | USD 960 | USD 3,840 | 270.7 |
| Median woody supplier, USD 200 per CY | USD 1,200 | USD 4,800 | 338.3 |
| Bagged char, USD 50 per 3 cu ft bag (USD 450 per CY) | USD 2,700 | USD 10,800 | 761.3 |

The finding is a split market. Every per-ton bulk quote lands between index 56.4 and 141.0, so bulk granular biochar fits inside the federal per-acre rate. Every cubic-yard quote lands between 269.0 and 338.3, and the garden bag reaches 761.3. Our blended USD 1,142 per tonne scores 322.0, which says most granular biochar revenue still comes from buyers paying well above field-crop economics: horticulture, turf and filtration rather than commodity acres. Douglas Insights reads the gap as the headroom that larger plants must close before row crops become a volume market.

## How is granular biochar separated from powder, fines and pellets in this sizing?

Granular biochar here means char screened or agglomerated into spreadable granules, which Douglas Insights estimates at roughly 7.4% of the 1.1 million tonnes of biochar produced commercially in 2025. Powder and fines sold mainly into concrete, asphalt and feed premixes fall outside the 81,640-tonne count.

Pellets made only for fuel are excluded, as is char that never leaves a producer's own composting site. Enriched granules, where char carries microbes or nutrients, are counted at their full sale value, because the granule cannot be separated from what it carries at the point of sale.

## How the model reaches 81,640 tonnes and USD 93.2 million: what are the methodology checks?

The granular biochar model multiplies 81,640 tonnes by USD 1,142 per tonne to reach USD 93.2 million, then splits that figure across 5 end uses and 5 regions that reconcile exactly. Three cross-checks agree within 4.3% or explain the gap.

Our model starts tonnage from the 1.1 million tonnes in the sibling biochar model and applies a granular share of 7.4%, checked against disclosed plant outputs: 10,000 tonnes at Carbonity and 1,000 tonnes at Carbofex. Price comes from 10 survey points converted at 6.0 cubic yards per dry ton. The first cross-check compares our value with the published 2025 granular figure of USD 97.4 million: ours is 4.3% lower because we exclude credit-bundled sales. The second compares value share with tonnage share: granules are 7.4% of tonnes but 13.7% of the USD 682.0 million biochar value, consistent with their premium. The third tests the regional sum: USD 34.3 million plus USD 27.3 million, USD 21.1 million, USD 6.2 million and USD 4.3 million equals USD 93.2 million.
