## Key takeaways

- Industrial vending machines total USD 3.32 billion in 2025 and reach USD 7.46 billion by 2035, an 8.42% revenue CAGR.
- Fastenal holds an estimated 18.2% of 2025 placements; the top three hold 34.3%.
- Locker vending machines grow fastest at 10.3% a year, while coil machines keep the largest share at 38.6%.
- Asia Pacific grows 11.6% a year; North America still holds 47.3% of 2025 value.
- The Industrial Vending Throughput Index stands at 84.6, and a USD 23,390 machine equals 13.8 months of product flow.

Because the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) rule on [employer payment for personal protective equipment (PPE)](https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2007/11/15/07-5608/employer-payment-for-personal-protective-equipment), effective 13 February 2008, put the bill for most gloves, safety glasses and earplugs on the employer, every untracked pair that leaves a tool crib now lands on the plant's own cost sheet. Industrial vending machines are the coil, locker, carousel and drawer cabinets that release PPE, cutting tools and maintenance, repair and operations (MRO) consumables to badge-identified workers at the point of use. The Industrial Vending Machines market covers machine hardware, installation and first-year software sold or placed by distributors and makers. Douglas Insights sizes it at USD 3.32 billion in 2025: 142,000 machines placed worldwide at an average realised USD 23,390 each (142,000 × USD 23,390 = USD 3.32 billion). Placements growing 6.4% a year and prices rising 1.9% lift the market to USD 7.46 billion in 2035, an 8.42% revenue CAGR. The model belongs to our [industrial automation and robotics](https://www.douglasinsights.com/industry/ict-semiconductors/industrial-automation-robotics/) coverage and follows the [Douglas Insights research methodology](https://www.douglasinsights.com/research-methodology/).

## Which companies place the most industrial vending machines on factory floors?

Fastenal leads with an 18.2% share of the 142,000 industrial vending machines placed in 2025, a Douglas Insights estimate set against its 25,892 signed machine equivalent units (MEU). Distributors that fill the cabinets with their own stock, not pure hardware makers, place most machines, because the consumable margin pays for the cabinet.

Fastenal's [fiscal 2025 Form 10-K](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/815556/000081555626000009/fast-20251231.htm) counts about 124,000 FASTVend devices in the field across 21 device designs, 16 of them helix or locker formats; the helix FAST 5000 and the 12- and 18-door lockers make up about 63% of that fleet. Weighted installations reached 136,638 MEU at the end of 2025, up 7.6% from 126,957, and FASTBin and FASTVend sales came to USD 2.68 billion, inside total net sales of USD 8.20 billion. One MEU equals the USD 2,000 targeted monthly throughput of a FAST 5000. FASTVend itself launched in 2008, the year the OSHA payment rule took effect.

MSC Industrial Direct publishes its base in [investor operational statistics](https://investor.mscdirect.com/image/FY24_Q2_Operational_Statistics.pdf), which show installed vending units near 24,830 in fiscal 2023 while In-Plant programs rose from 208 to 265 across that year. Douglas Insights puts MSC at about 9.7% of 2025 placements, assuming its base grew at a pace close to Fastenal's. W.W. Grainger runs KeepStock, which its 10-K calls an inventory management solution that serves customers on site; we give Grainger roughly 6.4% of placements. On those estimates the top three hold 34.3% of industrial vending machine placements, so the field below them stays fragmented.

### European distributor-makers

Würth Industrie Service runs more than 1,800 ORSYmat machines at more than 400 customers and 650 storage locations, with about 49,000 automatic order positions a month. Hoffmann Group counts more than 9,000 GARANT Tool24 installations and sells HOLEX 24seven cabinets beside them, including a Flex unit that holds up to 540 items. Rubix offers its Invend carousel, coil and locker machines to UK plants.

| Company | Industrial vending program | Disclosed metric | Douglas Insights share of 2025 placements |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Fastenal | FASTVend, FASTBin | 136,638 weighted MEU, end 2025 | 18.2% |
| MSC Industrial Direct | Vending, In-Plant | About 24,830 vending units, FY2023 | 9.7% |
| W.W. Grainger | KeepStock | Not disclosed | 6.4% |
| Würth Industrie Service | ORSYmat | More than 1,800 machines | Not estimated |
| Hoffmann Group | GARANT Tool24, HOLEX 24seven | More than 9,000 Tool24 installations | Not estimated |
| Rubix | Invend | Not disclosed | Not estimated |

## Which industrial vending machine type makes the money: coil, locker, carousel or drawer?

Coil vending machines lead with 38.6% of 2025 value, or USD 1.28 billion, because the helix dispenses gloves, inserts and batteries one unit at a time at the lowest cost per selection. Locker vending machines grow fastest, at 10.3% a year, as plants move power tools and gauges behind tracked doors.

| Machine type | Share 2025 | Value 2025 | Growth a year | Value 2035 |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Coil vending machines | 38.6% | USD 1.28 billion | 7.0% | USD 2.52 billion |
| Locker vending machines | 27.3% | USD 906.7 million | 10.3% | USD 2.42 billion |
| Carousel vending machines | 19.8% | USD 657.6 million | 8.1% | USD 1.43 billion |
| Drawer and weighing systems | 14.3% | USD 475.0 million | 8.9% | USD 1.11 billion |

Coil vending machines grow 7.0% a year to USD 2.52 billion; the FAST 5000 helix is the reference design, and coils win wherever a single item is cheap and consumed. Locker vending machines account for 27.3%, or USD 906.7 million, and reach USD 2.42 billion by 2035. Lockers lead growth because they handle returnable items: a torque wrench checked out for one shift and handed back is invisible to a coil but central to a calibration log. Carousel vending machines take 19.8%, worth USD 657.6 million, and grow 8.1% to USD 1.43 billion; the rotating drum suits smaller shops that want many items in one footprint. Drawer and weighing systems make up 14.3%, or USD 475.0 million, and grow 8.9% to USD 1.11 billion, led by weighing-cell bins such as the HOLEX 24seven Level. The four segments sum to USD 3.32 billion; their 2035 values add to USD 7.49 billion, 0.4% above the headline, because the locker line compounds faster.

## Why are plants putting industrial vending machines beside every work cell?

Industrial vending machine placements grow 6.4% a year in the base case, and four pulls account for all of it. Distributor-funded programs add 2.7 points, PPE cost control 1.6 points, round-the-clock shifts 1.3 points and new Asian plant floors 0.8 points, which together make the whole volume leg.

Distributor-funded placement is the largest pull at 2.7 points. In its [second-quarter 2026 earnings release of 14 July 2026](https://s23.q4cdn.com/591718779/files/doc_financials/2026/Q2/EX_99-1-06-30-2026-Earnings-Release-Final-no-Footers.pdf), Fastenal reported 140,789 weighted devices, up 6.5% on a year earlier, and 6,993 MEU signed in the quarter; devices carried 44.7% of sales against 43.7% a year before. Quarterly net sales rose 14.7% to USD 2.39 billion. The distributor installs the industrial vending machine at little or no upfront charge and earns the cabinet back on the consumables it refills, so device share of sales keeps climbing.

PPE cost control adds 1.6 points. Since US employers pay for most protective gear, a glove released against a badge is a glove the safety manager can charge to a cost center and a job number. Vendors make bold claims: Rubix says Invend cuts consumable MRO usage by 25 to 40%, and Hoffmann Group cites savings of up to 50% on its tool issuing systems. Douglas Insights models a typical saving well below both, at 18.5% of the consumable spend moved into a machine. That is still enough to justify a cabinet at most mid-sized plants.

Round-the-clock access contributes 1.3 points. Würth Industrie Service reports that about 40% of withdrawals from its ORSYmat machines happen outside normal business hours and 5% at weekends, when a staffed crib is closed or costs overtime. One industrial vending machine replaces part of a second- and third-shift crib attendant, the simplest labour substitution a plant can make.

New plant floors in Asia Pacific add 0.8 points through electronics, battery and automotive plants that specify vending at construction rather than as a retrofit. Fastenal already runs 1,595 branches in 25 countries, so cabinet and refill route arrive together. Douglas Insights expects Asia Pacific to grow 11.6% a year, against 7.13% for North America. Hoffmann Group already lists its GARANT Tool24 PickOne drum cabinet on its Singapore web shop, so European makers arrive in the region with proven cabinet designs and refill software. Plants that pair cabinets with [Warehouse Automation Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/warehouse-automation-market/) systems feed one consumption record into replenishment.

## What limits industrial vending machine placements in small job shops?

Thin spend at small shops, slowing signings and integration work trim 1.6 points from industrial vending machine placement growth, which would otherwise run near 8.0% a year. Small-shop economics remove 0.7 points, signings 0.5 and integration 0.4; the 6.4% base leg is already net of all three.

Thin spend removes 0.7 points. Fastenal sizes one MEU at USD 2,000 of targeted monthly throughput, or USD 24,000 a year. A 20-person machine shop buying USD 1,000 of gloves and inserts a month cannot fill a FAST 5000, so no distributor places one free and the owner will not pay USD 23,390 for it.

Slowing signings remove 0.5 points. Fastenal's [2025 annual report](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/815556/000081555626000009/fast-20251231.htm) shows 25,892 MEU signed in 2025, 7.5% fewer than the 27,984 of 2024, while net installations rose by 9,681 MEU, only 37.4% of the units signed. Our model reads that gap as a mature US base where new industrial vending machines increasingly replace old ones instead of adding sites.

Integration cost removes 0.4 points. A badge reader, a network drop and a link to the plant's purchasing system add work for IT and procurement; in plants with fewer than 50 employees that setup effort runs ahead of the saving for about 2 to 3 years.

## Where are industrial vending machines spreading fastest, North America or Asia Pacific?

North America holds 47.3% of 2025 industrial vending machine value, USD 1.57 billion, because the large distributor programs began there. Asia Pacific grows fastest at 11.6% a year, as new plants specify point-of-use dispensing from day one. Europe ranks second with 27.8% of value.

North America climbs at 7.13% a year to USD 3.13 billion in 2035, slower than the world because replacement now makes up a large part of US placements. Europe holds USD 923.3 million and grows 7.9% a year to USD 1.98 billion, carried by German and UK distributor-makers such as Würth and Hoffmann Group. Asia Pacific rises from USD 584.6 million to USD 1.75 billion, a 17.6% share of 2025 value that becomes the clear second region by the mid-2030s. Latin America is worth USD 152.8 million and grows 9.4% to USD 375.2 million, led by automotive and appliance plants supplied through North American distributor networks.

The wildcard is the Middle East and Africa, at USD 89.7 million in 2025 and 9.7% growth to USD 226.4 million. Oilfield bases and petrochemical sites run remote, 24-hour operations where a crib attendant is expensive, so a handful of large tenders can move the regional figure by a fifth in any single year.

## How much does an industrial vending machine cost a distributor or plant per unit?

An industrial vending machine realises USD 23,390 on average in 2025, including installation and first-year software, and that price rises 1.9% a year to about USD 28,230 by 2035. Coil and carousel units sit below the average; multi-door lockers and weighing systems sit above it.

Douglas Insights models realised bands of USD 17,000 to 26,000 for a single coil machine, USD 24,000 to 41,000 for multi-door locker banks, USD 19,000 to 30,000 for carousels and USD 9,000 to 22,000 for drawer and weighing modules. Douglas Insights calculates that a machine at USD 23,390 equals 13.8 months of the USD 1,691 monthly throughput that Fastenal's devices averaged per MEU in 2025. Price growth of 1.9% is slower than inflation in sheet steel and electronics because distributors absorb part of each cabinet cost against consumable margin. Card and badge readers borrow parts from the [Outdoor Payment Terminal Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/outdoor-payment-terminal-market/), which keeps reader prices falling.

## Which gloves, inserts and fasteners flow through industrial vending machine coils?

PPE makes up 43.1% of units dispensed by industrial vending machines in 2025, a Douglas Insights estimate, ahead of cutting tools at 24.6%, MRO consumables at 21.9% and fasteners at 10.4%. Gloves and safety glasses lead because they are used daily and paid for by the employer.

Würth Industrie Service says more than 8,511 different articles move through its ORSYmat machines each year, from protective gloves and eyewear to batteries. Cutting tools carry the highest value per dispense: a carbide insert or drill costs many times a pair of gloves, so a single carousel of inserts can match the monthly value of a full glove coil. Fasteners move through vending mostly in maintenance kits; production-line bolts stay on bin replenishment, as described in our [Automotive Fastener Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/automotive-fastener-market/) study.

## Which plants lean hardest on industrial vending machines, from aerospace hangars to oil rigs?

Manufacturing takes 58.7% of 2025 industrial vending machine placements, a Douglas Insights count by site type, because machining and assembly burn the most gloves and inserts per worker. Aerospace follows at 11.2%, oil and gas at 9.6%, construction at 8.3% and healthcare at 5.1%, with 7.1% elsewhere.

Aerospace hangars buy lockers to control calibrated tools and foreign-object risk. Oil and gas sites place cabinets at remote camps where a 24-hour crib is costly. Construction contractors use trailer-mounted machines on long projects. Healthcare buyers stock scrubs and PPE in hospital back rooms. Manufacturing remains the base: its 58.7% share falls only to about 55% by 2035 in our model.

## How do consignment programs and leases change who owns an industrial vending machine?

Consignment programs carry 61.4% of 2025 industrial vending machine placements, Douglas Insights tallies, against 23.3% for outright purchase and 15.3% for lease. Under consignment the distributor owns both the cabinet and the stock until a worker draws an item, so the plant pays for nothing it has not used.

Outright purchase is common among large aerospace and automotive buyers that run their own crib software and want any distributor to refill. A lease spreads a USD 23,390 machine across about 36 to 60 months. The mix matters for this forecast: consignment placements follow distributor signing goals, while purchases follow capital budgets.

## Which PPE regulation and payment law push gloves into industrial vending cabinets?

Two rules shape 43.1% of what industrial vending machines dispense: the US OSHA employer-pay rule and the EU PPE Regulation. The first makes the employer pay for protective gear; the second makes sure only conforming gear reaches the cabinet, so a machine that releases only approved items doubles as a compliance control.

The [OSHA final rule](https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2007/11/15/07-5608/employer-payment-for-personal-protective-equipment) took effect on 13 February 2008 and had to be implemented by 15 May 2008. It added payment provisions to 29 CFR 1910.132(h) for general industry, 1926.95(d) for construction and matching sections for shipyards, longshoring and marine terminals. In Europe, [Regulation (EU) 2016/425](https://eur-lex.europa.eu/eli/reg/2016/425/oj/eng) on personal protective equipment, adopted on 9 March 2016, has applied since 21 April 2018 and repealed Council Directive 89/686/EEC. Industrial vending software records who drew which glove class and when, which turns both rules into an audit trail.

## What if device signings stall: three 2035 cases for industrial vending machines?

The base case reaches USD 7.46 billion by 2035 on 6.4% placement growth and 1.9% price growth; a slower case ends at USD 5.59 billion and a faster one at USD 9.35 billion. The spread comes mostly from how fast distributors sign new devices outside North America.

The slower case assumes 4.1% placement growth and 1.2% price growth, a 5.35% revenue CAGR. Our model ties it to Fastenal's 2026 signing goal of 27,000 to 29,000 MEU, set in the July 2026 release, staying flat through 2035. The faster case takes 8.3% placements and 2.4% price, a 10.90% CAGR, if Asian plants adopt cabinets at US rates. A single extra point of placement growth adds roughly USD 731 million to the 2035 total. Outside forecasts we reviewed sit between 9.2% and 10.3% a year. Our 8.42% is lower because we count machines placed, not consumables sold through them, and because replacement now dominates US signings.

## Douglas Exclusive: the Industrial Vending Throughput Index

The Industrial Vending Throughput Index is a Douglas Insights model built from 9 inputs drawn from 3 company filings and releases and 1 company web page. The inputs are Fastenal's 2024 and 2025 weighted installations, 2025 signings, 2025 FASTBin and FASTVend sales, the USD 2,000 FAST 5000 target, the mid-2026 installed count, Würth's machine count and monthly order positions, and MSC's fiscal 2023 vending base. It is our calculation, not an official register.

The index sets the FAST 5000 target of USD 2,000 a month at 100. Dividing USD 2.68 billion of 2025 FASTBin and FASTVend sales by the average of 131,798 weighted MEU gives USD 1,691 a month, an index of 84.6. Industrial vending machines therefore run at about 85% of their design throughput. The finding has three parts. First, a machine at USD 23,390 costs the same as 13.8 months of product flow. Second, only 37.4% of 2025 signings became net new capacity. Third, Würth's ORSYmat fleet logs about 27.2 order positions per machine each month, a separate gauge of how often a cabinet triggers a refill.

| Index component | Value | Basis |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Monthly throughput per MEU, 2025 | USD 1,691 | Fastenal sales and installations |
| Throughput index (FAST 5000 target = 100) | 84.6 | Douglas Insights calculation |
| Months of throughput to equal machine price | 13.8 | USD 23,390 average price |
| Net new MEU as share of signings, 2025 | 37.4% | 9,681 of 25,892 MEU |
| Order positions per ORSYmat machine a month | 27.2 | 49,000 positions, 1,800 machines |

## Which receipts turn 142,000 industrial vending machine placements into USD 3.32 billion?

The receipts are 142,000 placements × USD 23,390 = USD 3.32 billion, built across 38 countries in five regions from 9 company inputs and 4 published growth rates. Placements rise 6.4% a year to about 264,000 machines in 2035, and price rises 1.9% to USD 28,230.

Three cross-checks hold. Fastenal's 25,892 signed MEU equal 18.2% of our placement count, consistent with its position as the largest single program. A published 2025 estimate of USD 3.5 billion sits 5.4% above our USD 3.32 billion. The 2026 value of USD 3.60 billion implies 151,100 machines at USD 23,834.4. Regions sum to USD 3.32 billion in 2025 and USD 7.46 billion in 2035.
