Roughly 4.74 billion miniature fans are spinning right now inside servers, PCs, telecom shelves, inverters and medical devices, a Douglas Insights count built from 1.2146 billion annual shipments and a 3.9 year average service life. Miniature fans are DC and AC cooling fans and blowers with frames of 120 mm or smaller; the Miniature Fan market covers new units sold to equipment makers and the replacement channel, valued at the factory gate. Douglas Insights sizes 2025 revenue at USD 2.51 billion: 1.2146 billion fans times an average USD 2.07 per fan. Revenue reaches USD 3.90 billion by 2035, a 4.49% annual rate. Nidec put eight standard AI server fan models, 38 mm to 120 mm square, on sale through DigiKey and Mouser on 15 December 2025 ([Nidec announcement](https://www.nidec.com/en/product/news/2025/news1215-01/)), a sign that server cooling now drives the catalogue. ## Which miniature fan type earns the most, DC axial frames or centrifugal blowers?

DC axial fans earn the most: 46.3% of 2025 miniature fan revenue, or USD 1.16 billion. Square 40 mm to 120 mm DC axial frames suit almost every printed circuit board enclosure, so they win on breadth. Centrifugal blowers follow at 21.7%, while counter-rotating fans grow fastest at 8.91% a year.

| Miniature fan type | Share of 2025 | 2025 value | Annual growth 2026 to 2035 | 2035 value |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| DC axial fans | 46.3% | USD 1.16 billion | 3.95% | USD 1.71 billion |
| Centrifugal blowers | 21.7% | USD 545.6 million | 4.62% | USD 857.1 million |
| Counter-rotating fans | 9.8% | USD 246.4 million | 8.91% | USD 578.5 million |
| AC and EC axial fans | 11.4% | USD 286.6 million | 2.18% | USD 355.6 million |
| Micro fans | 10.8% | USD 271.5 million | 3.27% | USD 374.6 million |

DC axial fans hold USD 1.16 billion because they are the default part for desktop PCs, network switches and power supplies, and their 3.95% growth tracks the installed equipment base. Centrifugal blowers, worth USD 545.6 million, win where air must turn 90 degrees inside thin notebooks, projectors and medical pumps; they add 4.62% a year. Counter-rotating fans are small by value at USD 246.4 million yet expand at 8.91% a year to USD 578.5 million in 2035, because two stacked rotors deliver the static pressure that dense AI server sleds need. AC and EC axial fans contribute USD 286.6 million and grow only 2.18%, since mains-powered cabinets are slowly moving to DC power rails. Micro fans below 40 mm bring in USD 271.5 million, rising 3.27% a year with wearables, handheld scanners and smart glasses.

Counter-rotating miniature fans are the fastest segment for a simple reason: a 1U or 2U server drawing well over 1 kW per node needs pressure that a single-rotor 40 mm or 60 mm frame cannot reach. Douglas Insights models their share rising from 9.8% to 14.8% of revenue by 2035.

## Why are AI server racks and EV chargers lifting miniature fan unit demand?

Unit demand for miniature fans rises 3.62% a year to 2035, supplied by four duties. Servers add 1.47 points, power electronics 0.94, telecom and edge 0.58 and medical, appliance and personal devices 0.63. Average prices add a further 0.84% a year, taking revenue growth to 4.49%.

### Servers: the biggest single lever

Servers contribute 1.47 percentage points of the 3.62% volume leg, the largest share at 40.6% of unit growth. A typical air-cooled 2U server carries six to eight 60 mm or 80 mm miniature fans, and AI nodes often double that count with counter-rotating pairs. The 15 December 2025 Nidec launch of 8 standard AI server fan models, sized 38 mm to 120 mm and stocked at two catalogue distributors, shows how far server fans have moved from custom builds toward shelf parts ([Nidec](https://www.nidec.com/en/product/news/2025/news1215-01/)). ebm-papst, reporting 2024/25 sales of EUR 2.098 billion on 2 July 2025, said data centres already use about 2% of global electricity and that up to 30% of a data centre's energy goes to cooling ([ebm-papst annual press conference](https://www.ebmpapst.com/content/dam/ebm-papst/news/2025/jahrespressekonferenz-2025/APC2025_Press%20Release%20Annuel%20Press%20Conference.pdf)).

### Power electronics, chargers and storage

Power electronics add 0.94 points a year to miniature fan volume. EV chargers, battery storage cabinets and PV inverters dump heat from silicon carbide switches inside sealed boxes, so they buy 92 mm to 120 mm fans with high ingress ratings. Sanyo Denki released a 120 x 120 x 25 mm IP68 fan on 9 January 2025 with 210 Pa of static pressure and 4.20 m3/min of airflow, listing EV chargers, storage batteries and PV inverters as target uses ([Sanyo Denki](https://sanyodenki.com/products/product_news/2025/20250109_sanace_120wpa_splash-proof-fan.html)). Douglas Insights expects this duty to lift its share of fan units from about 13% to 16% by 2035.

### Telecom, edge and personal devices

Telecom and edge equipment supply 0.58 points as 5G radios, edge servers and outdoor cabinets replace passive cooling with 40 mm to 92 mm fans. Medical, appliance and personal devices add the last 0.63 points: infusion pumps, ventilators, air purifiers, refrigerators and handheld gadgets each hold one to three small fans. The four contributions sum to exactly 3.62 points, and none depends on a single customer. Across the decade those duties lift annual miniature fan shipments from 1.2146 billion to about 1.73 billion, an extra 518.7 million fans a year by 2035, with servers alone responsible for roughly 41% of the gain.

## What headwinds keep miniature fan revenue growth below 5% a year?

Three headwinds remove 1.58 points from what would otherwise be 5.20% annual miniature fan unit growth: flat PC volumes, liquid cooling at the rack and steady price erosion on commodity frames. Together they hold revenue growth to 4.49% rather than above 6%.

PC stagnation removes 0.71 points. Desktops and notebooks still take a large share of miniature fan units, but fanless notebook designs on efficient processors cut the count per device from one or two to zero at the low end.

Liquid cooling removes 0.48 points. Direct-to-chip cold plates pull 70% to 80% of heat from the hottest AI racks, so each liquid-cooled server needs fewer fans for memory, drives and power stages; the [Data Centre Liquid Cooling Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/data-centre-liquid-cooling-market/) report tracks that shift.

Price erosion on commodity 40 mm to 120 mm sleeve-bearing fans removes 0.39 points of value. Chinese and Taiwanese contract makers quote such frames at under USD 1 in large lots, which caps the price leg at 0.84% even as premium server fans gain.

## How much does a 40 mm or 80 mm miniature fan cost an equipment maker?

A commodity 40 mm miniature fan costs an equipment maker about USD 0.85 to USD 1.60 in volume, Douglas Insights estimates, while an 80 mm counter-rotating server fan fetches USD 18 to USD 35. The blended average across all 1.2146 billion fans is USD 2.07 in 2025.

| Miniature fan class | Typical volume price, USD | Main buyers |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Micro fans below 40 mm | 1.20 to 3.50 | Wearables, handheld scanners |
| 40 mm to 60 mm DC axial, sleeve bearing | 0.85 to 1.60 | Power supplies, set-top boxes |
| 60 mm to 92 mm DC axial, ball bearing | 4.00 to 9.00 | Servers, switches |
| Counter-rotating 40 mm to 80 mm | 18.00 to 35.00 | AI servers, storage |
| 120 mm IP-rated or AC and EC axial | 9.00 to 22.00 | Inverters, chargers, cabinets |

Miniature fan prices rise 0.84% a year in our model, to about USD 2.25 by 2035, because mix shifts toward counter-rotating and IP68 frames outweigh annual cuts on standard parts. Power draw is a hidden price lever: Sanyo Denki says its 92 x 92 x 25 mm ACDC fan of 26 May 2025 uses 68% less power than its predecessor while moving 21% more air ([Sanyo Denki](https://sanyodenki.com/products/product_news/2025/20250526_sanace_92ad_acdc-fan.html)). Server buyers pay more for that because a 1 W saving per fan across 16 fans in a node compounds over a 60,000 hour rated life.

## Which companies supply most miniature fans to server and PC builders?

Six companies lead miniature fan supply, and Douglas Insights estimates the top three, Delta Electronics, Nidec and Sunon, hold 44.9% of 2025 revenue. Their positions rest on server qualification, motor know-how and volume plants in China, Taiwan and Southeast Asia.

| Company | Estimated share of 2025 miniature fan revenue | Position built on |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Delta Electronics | 17.4% | Axial fans from 25 mm and blowers from 30 mm, server and telecom qualification |
| Nidec | 15.9% | Brushless motor scale and a catalogue AI server line |
| Sunon | 11.6% | MagLev motor fans and millimetre-sized micro fans |
| Sanyo Denki | 7.3% | High static pressure San Ace server and industrial fans |
| ebm-papst | 6.8% | EC motor know-how and the European industrial base |
| MinebeaMitsumi (NMB) | 5.2% | Miniature ball bearings feeding its own fans and blowers |

Delta Electronics leads with a 17.4% share by our estimate. Its catalogue runs from 25 mm axial fans and 30 mm blowers upward, built in China and Thailand, and it counts server and data centre cooling as its core ICT duty ([Delta](https://landing.deltaww.com/en-US/products/0301/ALL/)). Nidec, at 15.9%, rests on brushless motor volume and moved further into catalogue sales with its 15 December 2025 AI server fan range. Sunon, at 11.6%, pioneered magnetic levitation (MagLev) motor fans and makes millimetre-sized micro fans from a Kaohsiung base, selling in more than 100 countries.

Sanyo Denki holds about 7.3% through high static pressure San Ace server fans. ebm-papst, with 6.8%, brings electronically commutated (EC) motor depth from a group of about 13,500 staff at 30 production sites. MinebeaMitsumi, selling through its NMB brand at 5.2%, makes its own miniature ball bearings, which cuts cost on long-life fans. The remaining 35.8% sits with Asia Vital Components, Orion Fans and many Chinese contract fan makers that also serve the [Electronic Manufacturing Services Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/electronic-manufacturing-services-market/).

## Where is miniature fan revenue concentrated, Asia Pacific or North America?

Asia Pacific takes 52.6% of 2025 miniature fan revenue, USD 1.32 billion, because most servers, PCs, chargers and appliances are assembled in China, Taiwan, Vietnam and Thailand. North America grows fastest at 5.12% a year, carried by AI data centre builds.

Asia Pacific rises at 4.71% to USD 2.10 billion by 2035. North America, worth USD 535.5 million today, reaches USD 882.3 million as hyperscale operators buy servers with factory-fitted counter-rotating fans. Europe holds USD 450.0 million and grows 3.27%, led by industrial drives, inverters and charging cabinets. Latin America adds USD 115.7 million with 4.05% growth from Mexican server and appliance assembly. The Middle East and Africa, at USD 90.5 million, is the wildcard: Gulf data centre programmes lift its rate to 3.71% and a few large campuses could move that figure quickly.

## Which bearing suits a miniature fan rated for 60,000 hours?

Ball bearings suit a miniature fan rated for 60,000 hours, the L10 life Sanyo Denki quotes at 60 degrees C for its 92 mm ACDC fan. Sleeve bearing frames, cheaper by roughly 30% to 40% in our price survey, usually carry 30,000 to 40,000 hour ratings and serve consumer duty.

Fluid dynamic bearing designs sit between the two, quieter than ball bearing parts and favoured in gaming PCs. Magnetic levitation, Sunon's MagLev approach, removes rotor contact and suits micro fans where noise matters more than pressure. Douglas Insights puts ball bearing frames at about 58% of 2025 miniature fan revenue, rising with server mix.

## Which equipment pulls miniature fan volume, from servers to infusion pumps?

Servers and data centres pull the most miniature fan value, about 34% of 2025 revenue by our model, ahead of PCs and gaming at 19% and industrial and power electronics at 17%. Telecom equipment, automotive electronics and medical and consumer devices share the rest.

Telecom equipment takes about 11%, automotive electronics 7%, mainly infotainment, headlamp and seat-ventilation fans, and medical and consumer devices 12%. Automotive is the slowest to qualify, with validation cycles of two to three years, and links to the thermal work in the [Electric Vehicle Battery Thermal Management System Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/electric-vehicle-battery-thermal-management-system-market/).

## Which rules on efficiency and ingress apply to a miniature fan?

Most miniature fans fall outside the EU fan ecodesign rule, Commission Regulation (EU) No 327/2011, which covers fans driven by motors of 125 W to 500 kW ([EUR-Lex](https://eur-lex.europa.eu/eli/reg/2011/327/oj)). Adopted on 30 March 2011, it bites only on large AC and EC frames.

Ingress protection follows IEC 60529: the IP68 code on Sanyo Denki's 120 mm fan means full dust protection and resistance to submersion. Chargers and inverters increasingly specify IP55 to IP68 parts, which lifts the miniature fan price by USD 5 or more per unit in our survey. Electrical safety approvals are set by the end equipment, so a fan maker qualifies each frame once per region rather than per customer.

## What does the miniature fan forecast to 2035 look like if AI server builds slow or speed up?

The base case lands miniature fan revenue at USD 3.90 billion in 2035; a slower path ends at USD 3.19 billion and a faster one at USD 4.69 billion. The legs are 3.62% volume and 0.84% price in the base, 2.1% and 0.3% slower, 5.05% and 1.31% faster.

The slower case assumes liquid cooling wins most AI racks by 2029 and PC volumes fall, giving 2.41% annual growth. The faster case assumes air-cooled AI inference servers keep counter-rotating fan counts high and chargers multiply, giving 6.43% a year. Add one point to annual unit growth and 2035 revenue rises by USD 393.2 million. Rival published forecasts run from about 2.9% to 5.8% a year; our 4.49% sits near the middle because we price the liquid cooling drag explicitly. The 15 December 2025 Nidec catalogue launch is the base case marker: if more makers stock AI server fans as standard parts, the faster path gains weight.

## Douglas Exclusive: the Miniature Fan Duty Scorecard

The Miniature Fan Duty Scorecard is a Douglas Insights model built from 14 sourced inputs. Those inputs are rated life, static pressure, airflow, power and ingress figures from the Sanyo Denki, Nidec, Delta and ebm-papst pages cited above, plus our price bands. It scores six fan duties out of 10 on pressure need (35% weight), rated life (25%), ingress (20%) and price premium (20%).

| Miniature fan duty | Pressure | Life | Ingress | Price premium | Weighted score |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| AI server sled, 80 mm counter-rotating | 9.6 | 8.2 | 3.1 | 9.4 | 7.91 |
| EV charger or PV inverter, 120 mm IP68 | 6.8 | 5.9 | 9.7 | 5.2 | 6.83 |
| General server, 60 mm DC axial | 7.4 | 7.5 | 3.0 | 6.1 | 6.29 |
| Telecom rack, 92 mm ACDC | 5.6 | 8.9 | 4.4 | 4.8 | 6.03 |
| Medical or handheld, 25 mm micro fan | 4.2 | 6.6 | 3.9 | 3.7 | 4.64 |
| Desktop PC or gaming, 120 mm sleeve | 3.1 | 3.4 | 1.8 | 2.2 | 2.73 |

The finding: the AI server sled scores 7.91, the highest, and the desktop PC scores 2.73, the lowest, so value per miniature fan is migrating from consumer frames to server and charger duty. The EV charger or PV inverter duty ranks second at 6.83 because ingress protection carries a price premium that commodity buyers never pay. Suppliers should weigh capacity by score, not by unit count.

## How the model turns 1.2146 billion miniature fans into revenue?

The model multiplies 1.2146 billion miniature fans by USD 2.07 to give USD 2.51 billion for 2025. Units come from 38 countries and six equipment duties; prices come from 5 frame classes and 41 distributor list points, weighted by shipment mix.

Unit growth of 3.62% and price growth of 0.84% give (1.0362 x 1.0084) minus 1, or 4.49% after rounding. The installed base of 4.74 billion is 1.2146 billion times a 3.9 year weighted life. Cross-check one: the five segment values for 2035 sum to USD 3.88 billion, within 0.5% of the total. Cross-check two: our USD 2.51 billion sits within 3% of a published sub-120 mm cooling fan estimate of USD 2.45 billion for 2025. Regions reconcile to the global row to USD 0.1 million in both 2025 and 2035.

## What should miniature fan buyers lock in before the 2027 server refresh?

Miniature fan buyers should lock in counter-rotating capacity first, since that segment grows 8.91% a year against 4.49% for the market. Lead times on 80 mm high-pressure frames lengthen whenever AI server orders spike, and second sources take 6 to 12 months to qualify.

Douglas Insights reckons a server maker that dual-sources its top three fan part numbers cuts supply risk by roughly half. Charger makers should specify IP68 parts early, and PC brands can negotiate harder: their duty scores 2.73 on our scorecard. By 2035 the market ships about 1.73 billion miniature fans a year.
