USD 1,329 a tonne was the world average export unit value for papaya in the first nine months of 2023, up 7% on a year earlier, according to the [FAO Major Tropical Fruits Market Review preliminary results](https://fao.org/3/cc9308en/cc9308en.pdf). The Papaya Papain and Pawpaw market covers fresh Carica papaya fruit (sold as papaya or pawpaw), processed papaya products and the papain enzyme tapped from green fruit latex. Douglas Insights sizes it at USD 6.03 billion in 2025, built as 14.62 million tonnes of fruit equivalent multiplied by a blended realised value of USD 412.6 per tonne, rising to USD 8.92 billion by 2035 at a 3.99% revenue CAGR. FAO released its Major Tropical Fruits Market Review preliminary results for 2025 on 28 January 2026, listed on the [FAO tropical fruits publications page](https://www.fao.org/markets-and-trade/publications/major-tropical-fruits-archive/en). The study belongs to our [food ingredients](https://www.douglasinsights.com/industry/food-beverages/food-ingredients/) coverage and follows the [Douglas Insights research methodology](https://www.douglasinsights.com/research-methodology/).

## What do buyers pay per tonne for papaya, papain and pawpaw fruit?

Papaya buyers pay about USD 215 to USD 1,454 a tonne at origin; the blended papaya, papain and pawpaw value is USD 412.6 per tonne in 2025. Douglas Insights builds that blend from export, domestic and enzyme prices. The spread reflects export grade, variety and how much fruit ends up as papain or puree rather than fresh retail produce.

FAO reported a Brazil export unit value of USD 1,454 a tonne for January to July 2023, up 20%, against roughly USD 215 a tonne for Guatemala, a gap of 6.8 times. Brazil's domestic papaya market paid about USD 310 a tonne in the first half of 2023, per the same [FAO review](https://fao.org/3/cc9308en/cc9308en.pdf). Those two Brazilian numbers bracket the farm economics: a grower who reaches the export pack line earns 4.7 times the domestic price.

Further down the chain, the United States wholesale price for papaya peaked at USD 9.48 per kg in June 2023 and averaged USD 8.48 per kg from January to October. That wholesale average is 6.4 times the world export unit value, per the same [FAO price series](https://fao.org/3/cc9308en/cc9308en.pdf). Freight, ripening, shrink and distributor margin sit inside that multiple. Retail Maradol and Tainung papaya from Mexico and Central America averaged USD 1.09 per pound in the first half of 2024, about USD 2403.0 a tonne.

Papain is different. Purified papain powder sells by the kilogram, so a tonne of green fruit tapped for latex carries far more value than a tonne sold fresh. Douglas Insights expects the blended papaya value to reach USD 507.9 per tonne by 2035, a 2.10% annual price leg driven by export mix and enzyme upgrading.

## Which product segment makes the money in papaya, papain and pawpaw?

Domestic fresh papaya carries 77.9% of 2025 value, or USD 4.70 billion, because most papaya is eaten in the country where it grows. Papain enzyme, at 4.8% share, grows fastest at 6.27% a year on food, brewing and pharmaceutical demand.

| Segment | Share 2025 | Value 2025 | CAGR 2026-2035 | Value 2035 |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Domestic fresh papaya | 77.9% | USD 4.70 billion | 3.71% | USD 6.76 billion |
| Exported fresh papaya | 8.1% | USD 488.6 million | 4.12% | USD 731.6 million |
| Processed papaya products | 7.6% | USD 458.4 million | 4.46% | USD 709.2 million |
| Papain enzyme | 4.8% | USD 289.5 million | 6.27% | USD 531.9 million |
| Papaya seed and leaf extracts | 1.6% | USD 96.5 million | 5.94% | USD 171.9 million |

Domestic fresh papaya is worth USD 4.70 billion and grows at 3.71% a year, reaching USD 6.76 billion in 2035; India, Brazil, Indonesia and Nigeria eat most of their own output, sold through wet markets, retail and foodservice. Exported fresh papaya totals USD 488.6 million and climbs at 4.12% to USD 731.6 million, because cross-border shipments of about 365,700 tonnes earn the USD 1,329 export unit value. Processed papaya products, meaning puree, dried fruit, juice and canned pieces, hold USD 458.4 million and expand at 4.46% to USD 709.2 million, as cosmetic-grade and off-grade fruit is diverted into ingredients. Papain enzyme stands at USD 289.5 million and is the fastest grower at 6.27%, ending at USD 531.9 million; the reason is that latex extraction lifts value per tree without extra land. Papaya seed and leaf extracts, the smallest line at USD 96.5 million, grow at 5.94% to USD 171.9 million as supplement makers test papaya leaf preparations.

Why does papain outpace fresh fruit? The enzyme sells into meat tenderising, brewing, pharmaceuticals and cosmetics, so one tonne of tapped green papaya is monetised twice: latex first, then fruit for processing. Douglas Insights puts the combined enzyme and extract share at 6.4% today and 7.9% by 2035. Segment values sum to the papaya, papain and pawpaw total exactly.

## Why are papaya volumes and papain orders still climbing?

Papaya volume rises 1.85% a year in the Douglas Insights base case, taking fruit-equivalent output from 14.62 million tonnes in 2025 to 17.56 million tonnes in 2035. Three forces add up to that volume leg: US import pull, Asian and African planting, and papain extraction.

US import pull adds 0.72 percentage points. American papaya imports reached 217,589 tonnes in 2023, up from 201,887 tonnes in 2022, an increase of 7.8%, according to the [FAO 2023 review](https://fao.org/3/cc9308en/cc9308en.pdf). The United States took about 62% of global papaya imports that year. Retail availability per American reached 1.51 pounds in 2023, the fifth straight year of rising import volume. Mexican papaya supply, which made up 82% of US import volume on average over five years per USDA-based reporting, is the core of this driver.

Planting in producing countries adds 0.68 points. World papaya output reached 11.22 million tonnes in 2010 after growing 4.35% a year from 2002, per the University of Florida [IFAS overview of global papaya production](https://ask.ifas.ufl.edu/publication/FE913). India alone held 38.61% of world output in 2008 to 2010, Brazil 17.50% and Indonesia 6.89%. Douglas Insights rolls that base forward at a slower 1.78% a year to reach 14.62 million tonnes in 2025, reflecting smaller plantations and disease losses since the earlier boom.

Papain extraction adds 0.45 points. Green papaya tapped for latex enters the market twice, as enzyme and as fruit for puree or candied pieces, so latex programmes raise the tonnage that reaches a paying buyer. US regulators have treated papain as generally recognised as safe (GRAS) for food since 15 March 1977, when 42 FR 14653 listed it, as shown in [21 CFR 184.1585](https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-21/chapter-I/subchapter-B/part-184/subpart-B/section-184.1585). That status lets food makers use papain as an enzyme, processing aid and texturiser at levels set only by good manufacturing practice.

The three drivers sum to 1.85 points, equal to the 1.85% volume leg. The FAO release of 28 January 2026 on 2025 tropical fruit trade is the next checkpoint for the US import driver. Price adds a further 2.10% a year, giving the 3.99% revenue CAGR.

Fresh consumption still absorbs most papaya tonnage, so the volume drivers act mainly through household buying in India, Brazil, Nigeria and Indonesia. Of the 2.94 million extra tonnes expected between 2025 and 2035, Douglas Insights assigns 1.14 million tonnes to US import pull, 1.08 million to new planting and 0.72 million to papain tapping programmes. Douglas Insights treats these three drivers as independent. A weak year in one does not cancel the others. Imports matter most. These drivers apply across the whole papaya, papain and pawpaw chain.

## What limits papaya exports after hurricane-hit seasons?

Weather, perishability and price gaps remove about 0.80 points of papaya volume growth that the market would otherwise post. Without them, fruit-equivalent output would grow near 2.65% a year rather than 1.85%.

Hurricane damage and a lack of sunshine cut production in key areas in 2023, and world papaya exports fell 3% to 365,702 tonnes from 375,024 tonnes in 2022, per the [FAO preliminary review](https://fao.org/3/cc9308en/cc9308en.pdf). Mexico shipped 194,167 tonnes, down about 4%, and Guatemala 49,015 tonnes, also down about 4%. Douglas Insights removes 0.38 points of volume growth for recurring storm seasons on the Gulf and Pacific coasts.

Short shelf life removes 0.27 points. Ripe papaya is a perishable fruit, which favours near markets: the United States sits next to Mexico, while Europe imported only 30,550 tonnes in 2023. EU buyers take less than one tenth of US volume, a ratio of 14.04%.

Price gaps remove 0.15 points. Guatemala's papaya at about USD 215 a tonne against Brazil's USD 1,454 shows how variety and grade split growers into a few premium suppliers and many low earners, which slows replanting for export. Malaysia's exports fell about 14% to 14,402 tonnes in 2023, an example of a supplier losing ground. Each restraint cuts papaya, papain and pawpaw volume in its own way.

## Which companies supply papain and Golden papaya at scale?

The top three papaya exporting countries, Mexico, Guatemala and Brazil, shipped 77.9% of world papaya export tonnage in 2023, so company scale sits inside those three supply bases. Enzyme firms in India and Belgium lead papain.

Caliman Agricola of Brazil is one of the world's largest papaya growers, with more than 700 employees, and was the first Brazilian papaya grower certified by FLOCERT under Fairtrade, according to trade reporting on its US importer. HLB Specialties of Pompano Beach, Florida, the largest importer of Brazilian papaya into the United States and Canada, held about 60% of the Golden papaya segment at the time of that report; its position rests on its Caliman supply contract.

Advanced Enzyme Technologies of India traces its origin to papain: its founder L.C. Rathi began commercial papain production in 1978, per the company's [history and milestones page](https://www.advancedenzymes.com/history-and-milestones/). That heritage gives it established latex sourcing and pharmaceutical-grade customers. Enzybel Group, a Belgian natural enzymes firm, sells papain, bromelain and ficin and sources papain from North Kivu in the Democratic Republic of Congo; its position is built on smallholder latex networks. Enzybel India, its joint venture with Phytozymes Enterprises, gives Enzybel a papain factory in India with a local team. For growers and importers alike, the FAO tropical fruit review published on 28 January 2026, listed on the [FAO publications page](https://www.fao.org/markets-and-trade/publications/major-tropical-fruits-archive/en), is the dated benchmark against which the papaya, papain and pawpaw suppliers above are measured.

Mexican packers serving the Maradol trade make up the volume leaders on the fresh side, collectively holding a 53.1% share of world papaya export tonnage in 2023. Douglas Insights estimates that the top three papain producers hold about 38.4% of papain enzyme value; that is a modelled figure anchored on the producer roster above, not a disclosed number. Company positions in papaya, papain and pawpaw supply are described from the sources read.

| Company | Base | Position built on |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Caliman Agricola | Brazil | Large Golden papaya orchards, Fairtrade certification |
| HLB Specialties | United States | Leading importer of Brazilian papaya, about 60% of Golden papaya |
| Advanced Enzyme Technologies | India | Papain producer since 1978 |
| Enzybel Group | Belgium | Papain sourced from North Kivu smallholders |
| Enzybel India | India | Joint venture papain factory with Phytozymes Enterprises |
| Phytozymes Enterprises | India | Partner in the Enzybel India papain plant |

## Where is papaya grown, and where do papain buyers sit?

Asia Pacific leads the papaya and papain market with USD 2.50 billion in 2025, because India grows more than a third of world output. Middle East and Africa grows fastest at 4.58% a year on new planting and papain tapping.

Asia Pacific rises from USD 2.50 billion to USD 3.81 billion by 2035 at 4.31%, led by India's domestic papaya trade and its papain plants. Latin America holds USD 1.38 billion and grows at 3.62% to USD 1.97 billion, built on Brazil's domestic market and the Mexican, Guatemalan and Brazilian export lanes. Middle East and Africa stands at USD 996.5 million and reaches USD 1.56 billion, the fastest regional rate, because Nigeria, Ethiopia and the Democratic Republic of Congo grow papaya at scale and Congolese papain feeds European enzyme buyers. North America is worth USD 719.6 million and grows at 3.47% to USD 1.01 billion; its value is high per tonne because imported papaya is priced at wholesale and retail levels. Europe, at USD 442.8 million, grows 2.67% a year to USD 576.4 million, held back by small import volumes of 30,550 tonnes.

The wildcard is Africa's papain belt. If North Kivu and East African latex supply scales, Middle East and Africa could pass USD 1.68 billion by 2035. Regional papaya, papain and pawpaw values here are Douglas Insights estimates.

## How concentrated is papaya trade among Mexico, Guatemala and Brazil?

Mexico shipped 53.1% of world papaya exports in 2023, and the top three origins together shipped 77.9%, so fresh papaya trade is among the most concentrated in tropical fruit. Douglas Insights counts exports at just 2.50% of fruit-equivalent volume.

Exports of 365,702 tonnes at USD 1,329 a tonne are worth about USD 486.0 million, matching the USD 488.6 million export segment within 0.5%. Brazil shipped 41,760 tonnes in 2023, up about 5%, while Mexico and Guatemala each fell about 4%. FAO also flagged a large discrepancy between Mexican export data and US import data for papaya, a reminder that trade statistics on this fruit need cross-checking.

For papaya buyers, concentration means a single bad hurricane season in Mexico moves the US price. The June 2023 wholesale peak of USD 9.48 per kg came in the same year that Mexican shipments fell, per the [FAO 2023 review](https://fao.org/3/cc9308en/cc9308en.pdf). Trade concentration is the main supply risk for papaya, papain and pawpaw buyers.

## What does papain do in meat tenderising, brewing and medicine?

Papain is a proteolytic enzyme from Carica papaya latex, and Douglas Insights values papain enzyme sales at USD 289.5 million in 2025. Its uses run across meat tenderising, brewing, pharmaceuticals and cosmetics, each sold through industrial ingredient sales rather than retail.

Under [21 CFR 184.1585](https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-21/chapter-I/subchapter-B/part-184/subpart-B/section-184.1585), papain is collected from the latex of unripe papaya, used in liquid or dry form, and must meet Food Chemicals Codex specifications. Food uses include protein breakdown in meat and chill-proofing of beer, which ties papain demand to meat and brewing output. Readers following the wider enzyme pool can compare our [Industrial Enzymes Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/industrial-enzymes-market/) study, and meat processors can read the [Specialty Meat Ingredients Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/specialty-meat-ingredients-market/) report.

Pharmaceutical papain is narrower than it was. Topical wound products with papain lost their US market when FDA ordered firms to stop making unapproved versions by 24 November 2008 and stop shipping by 21 January 2009, per the [FDA enforcement questions and answers](https://www.fda.gov/drugs/unapproved-drugs/questions-and-answers-about-fdas-enforcement-action-regarding-unapproved-topical-drug-products). Food-grade protein hydrolysis remains the main papain outlet, a process shared with collagen processing covered in our [Collagen Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/collagen-market/) study. Enzyme uses give the papaya, papain and pawpaw market its fastest-growing line.

## Which FDA rules govern papain in food and in topical drugs?

Two US rules shape papain demand: GRAS status for food since 15 March 1977, and the 2008 FDA action against unapproved topical papain drugs. Together they steer papain into food processing, which carries most of the USD 289.5 million enzyme segment.

The GRAS listing in [21 CFR 184.1585](https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-21/chapter-I/subchapter-B/part-184/subpart-B/section-184.1585) was published at 42 FR 14653 on 15 March 1977 and amended at 48 FR 48806 on 21 October 1983. It sets no limit beyond current good manufacturing practice. The [FDA topical papain action](https://www.fda.gov/drugs/unapproved-drugs/questions-and-answers-about-fdas-enforcement-action-regarding-unapproved-topical-drug-products) set manufacturing and shipping deadlines of 24 November 2008 and 21 January 2009. Douglas Insights treats import inspection and compliance costs for fresh papaya as part of the USD 1,329 export unit value rather than a separate line. No other rule shapes papaya, papain and pawpaw revenue as directly as the GRAS listing.

## How large could the papaya and papain market be in 2035 under three scenarios?

The base case reaches USD 8.92 billion by 2035, with a slower case at USD 7.85 billion and a faster case at USD 10.08 billion. The spread depends mostly on Mexican export recovery and papain tapping in Africa and India.

Base case: 1.85% volume and 2.10% price, giving 3.99% revenue growth and USD 8.92 billion. Slower case: 1.05% volume and 1.60% price, as repeated hurricane seasons cap Mexican papaya exports, giving USD 7.85 billion. Faster case: 2.55% volume and 2.65% price, as papain demand and Brazilian Golden papaya exports scale, giving USD 10.08 billion.

Sensitivity: adding one point to papaya volume growth lifts the 2035 papaya total by about USD 915.5 million. Outside forecasts for papaya or papain run from 4.35% to 12.15% a year, and our 3.99% sits below that published range because it values most fruit at farm-gate prices of about USD 310 a tonne, while the published papain studies cover only the faster enzyme niche. The FAO review dated 28 January 2026 for 2025 trade is the first data point that will move these cases. All three cases cover the full papaya, papain and pawpaw scope.

## Douglas Exclusive: the Papaya Export Price Tracker

The Papaya Export Price Tracker is a Douglas Insights model built from 8 price observations and 4 export volume records, 12 inputs in all, taken from FAO, USDA-based trade reporting and the University of Florida. It tracks how much value a tonne of papaya gains from farm gate to US retail.

| Price point | USD per tonne | Multiple of Brazil farm price |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Guatemala export unit value, Jan to Jul 2023 | 215 | 0.69 |
| Brazil domestic market, H1 2023 | 310 | 1.00 |
| World export unit value, Jan to Sep 2023 | 1,329 | 4.29 |
| Brazil export unit value, Jan to Jul 2023 | 1,454 | 4.69 |
| US retail Maradol and Tainung, H1 2024 | 2,403 | 7.75 |
| US wholesale average, Jan to Oct 2023 | 8,480 | 27.35 |

The tracker's finding: the US wholesale papaya price is 27.4 times the Brazil farm price, while the world export unit value is 4.29 times. The US retail figure of USD 1.09 per pound sits below the FAO wholesale series, so the two US series are not on one basis; the tracker flags that gap. Our tracker also shows the Guatemala export value at 0.69 times the Brazil domestic price, which signals that Guatemala's reported unit value captures a different grade or a reporting gap rather than a true export premium.

Douglas Insights will update the tracker with each FAO release; it is our own count and model, not an official register. The tracker covers fresh papaya, papain and pawpaw price points only where a source exists.

## How the model turns 14.62 million papaya tonnes into the 2025 total?

The model multiplies 14.62 million tonnes of papaya fruit equivalent by USD 412.6 per tonne, giving USD 6.03 billion for 2025. It covers 5 regions, 5 product segments and 12 tracker inputs.

Volume: 11.22 million tonnes in 2010 rolled forward at 1.78% a year for 15 years gives 14.62 million tonnes. Price: exports are 2.50% of volume at USD 1,329; the domestic balance is valued near the Brazil farm reference of USD 310 plus processing and papain uplift, giving the USD 412.6 blend. Cross-check one: export tonnage times unit value gives USD 486.0 million, within 0.5% of the export segment. Cross-check two: the five regions sum to USD 6.03 billion in 2025 and USD 8.92 billion in 2035, matching the global row. Every papaya, papain and pawpaw figure on this page traces back to these two inputs.
