## Key takeaways

- The plush throw blanket market is worth USD 11.6 billion in 2025 and USD 16.4 billion in 2035, a 3.53% CAGR.
- About 610 million throws at an average USD 19.0 form the 2025 base; pieces grow 2.2% a year and price 1.3%.
- China exported USD 3.41 billion of synthetic-fibre blankets in 2025, down 4.1% in value while tonnage rose about 6%.
- China's share of US synthetic-blanket imports fell to 84.5% in 2025 from 91.8% in 2024 as sourcing moved to Vietnam, India and Cambodia.
- EU textile EPR schemes covering HS 6301 blankets must be in place by 17 April 2028.

China exported USD 3.41 billion of synthetic-fibre blankets in 2025, 4.1% less than in 2024, even as tonnage rose about 6% to 849.7 million kilograms, China customs data in the [UN Comtrade database](https://comtradeapi.un.org/public/v1/preview/C/A/HS?reporterCode=156&period=2025&cmdCode=630140&flowCode=X&partnerCode=0) show; polyester fleece and microplush make up most of that trade. The plush throw blanket market covers soft decorative throws, typically 125 cm by 150 cm to 150 cm by 200 cm, in polyester fleece, microplush and flannel fleece, sherpa, faux fur, knitted and chenille yarns, cotton and wool, plus weighted throws, valued at retail prices. Douglas Insights sizes it at USD 11.6 billion in 2025, about 610 million throws at an average USD 19.0 each, rising to USD 16.4 billion in 2035, a 3.53% compound annual growth rate (CAGR). The study sits in our [consumer goods and retail coverage](https://www.douglasinsights.com/industry/consumer-goods-retail/), beside the [Smart Furniture Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/smart-furniture-market/), [Smart Textiles Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/smart-textiles-market/) and [U.S. Retail and Wholesale Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/u-s-retail-and-wholesale-market/) reports; every figure follows the Douglas Insights [research methodology](https://www.douglasinsights.com/research-methodology/).

## Which plush throw material sells most: polyester fleece, sherpa, faux fur or knits?

Polyester fleece, microplush and flannel fleece throws sell the most, 38.0% of 2025 value or about USD 4.40 billion, Douglas Insights estimates. Weighted throws grow fastest, 5.6% a year to USD 1.20 billion by 2035.

| Material | Share 2025 | Value 2025 | CAGR 2026-2035 | Value 2035 |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Polyester fleece, microplush and flannel fleece | 38.0% | USD 4.40 billion | 3.0% | USD 5.92 billion |
| Sherpa and faux shearling | 18.0% | USD 2.09 billion | 4.4% | USD 3.21 billion |
| Knitted and chenille | 16.0% | USD 1.85 billion | 3.4% | USD 2.59 billion |
| Cotton, wool and other natural fibres | 12.0% | USD 1.39 billion | 3.0% | USD 1.87 billion |
| Faux fur | 10.0% | USD 1.16 billion | 3.6% | USD 1.65 billion |
| Weighted throws | 6.0% | USD 695 million | 5.6% | USD 1.20 billion |

Polyester fleece leads because it is cheap, light, machine-washable and made at huge scale on Chinese knitting and brushing lines. A microplush throw weighing about 0.6 kg contains about USD 2.40 of fabric at China's 2025 export unit value of USD 4.01 a kilogram, calculated from the [Comtrade figures](https://comtradeapi.un.org/public/v1/preview/C/A/HS?reporterCode=156&period=2025&cmdCode=630140&flowCode=X&partnerCode=0), yet sells for USD 10 to USD 25 in stores. The class grows 3.0% a year to USD 5.92 billion, slower than the market, because it is the default gift and promotion item and competes on price.

Sherpa and faux shearling, USD 2.09 billion, grow 4.4% a year as the two-sided look, short plush on one face and curly pile on the other, moves from apparel into home textiles. Knitted and chenille throws, USD 1.85 billion, grow 3.4% on chunky-knit styles sold as decor. Cotton, wool and natural throws, USD 1.39 billion, grow 3.0% and carry the highest prices, often USD 80 to USD 300 for wool or cashmere, Douglas Insights estimates. Faux fur, USD 1.16 billion, grows 3.6%. Weighted throws, USD 695 million, grow fastest at 5.6% as adults use them for sleep and relaxation. Material values for 2035 sum to USD 16.4 billion, 0.26% above the headline.

## What drives plush throw demand: gifting, online buying or new fabrics?

Throw volume rises 2.2% a year in our base case, from about 610 million pieces in 2025 to about 758 million in 2035. Four drivers add 3.00 points of gross growth; restraints remove 0.80 points.

### Gifting, seasonal decor and home comfort: 0.90 points

Gifts and seasonal decor are the largest driver, worth 0.90 points. Throws are among the cheapest home textiles that change a room's look, so retailers refresh them every autumn and holiday season. Target, whose home furnishings and decor category "includes bed and bath, home décor", sold USD 15.6 billion in that category in 2025, against USD 16.7 billion in 2024, its [2025 annual report](https://corporate.target.com/getmedia/79214b4b-6331-4b1c-b76f-acff121b40f9/2025-Annual-Report-Target-Corporation.pdf) shows. Douglas Insights estimates that about 40% of throws are bought in October to December and about one in three is a gift.

### Online buying and private labels: 0.80 points

Online and private-label growth adds 0.80 points. A throw ships flat in a polybag, rarely breaks and is sized one-fits-all, so it sells well online. Walmart launched Mainstays Kids, its first new home brand in five years, with more than 600 items across furniture, bedding, bath and decor, on 27 May 2026, its [release](https://corporate.walmart.com/news/2026/05/27/walmart-expands-exclusive-and-private-brand-portfolio) states, and Bed Bath & Beyond, Inc. bought the Kirkland's Home brand for USD 10 million on 15 September 2025 to expand into stores and wholesale, its [release](https://s203.q4cdn.com/409549452/files/doc_news/Bed-Bath--Beyond-Inc--Completes-10-Million-Acquisition-of-Kirklands-Home-Brand-Assets-2025.pdf) shows. Douglas Insights estimates online channels sell about 34% of throws in 2025, rising to about 45% by 2035.

### Rising incomes in the Gulf, Asia and Latin America: 0.80 points

Emerging-market demand adds 0.80 points. Saudi Arabia bought USD 119.9 million and the United Arab Emirates USD 105.0 million of Chinese synthetic blankets in 2025, and Chile USD 70.4 million, the [Comtrade destination data](https://comtradeapi.un.org/public/v1/preview/C/A/HS?reporterCode=156&period=2025&cmdCode=630140&flowCode=X) show, together close to the UK's USD 120.3 million and Japan's USD 105.7 million. Luolai Lifestyle, China's largest listed home-textile brand, grew revenue 6.13% to RMB 4.84 billion in 2025, its [annual report](https://pdf.dfcfw.com/pdf/H2_AN202604221821456307_1.pdf) shows. Douglas Insights estimates each 1% rise in household spending on furnishings in these regions adds about 0.15 points to world throw volume.

### New fabrics and formats: 0.50 points

New formats add the last 0.50 points. Sherpa reversibles, cooling knit throws for summer and weighted throws filled with glass beads widen the use season and raise replacement rates. Douglas Insights estimates weighted throws sold about 9 million pieces in 2025, mostly in North America, and that cooling and all-season throws lift summer sales by about 15%. Summed, 0.90 + 0.80 + 0.80 + 0.50 = 3.00 points, a Douglas Insights estimate.

## What holds plush throw sales back: weak home spending or new textile rules?

Two restraints remove 0.80 points a year from throw volume: weak home-furnishing spending in the United States, Europe and China takes 0.50 points, and tariffs, chemical rules and textile waste fees take 0.30 points.

Weak home spending is the heavier drag. Target's home furnishings and decor sales fell 6.5% in 2025, the [annual report](https://corporate.target.com/getmedia/79214b4b-6331-4b1c-b76f-acff121b40f9/2025-Annual-Report-Target-Corporation.pdf) shows, while US furniture and home furnishings stores sold USD 127.3 billion in 2025, up only 1.9% and still below USD 129.8 billion in 2023, US Census Bureau retail data on [FRED](https://fred.stlouisfed.org/graph/fredgraph.csv?id=MRTSSM442USN) show. In China, revenue at home-textile firms above designated size fell 4.33% in 2025, Hunan Mengjie notes in its [2025 annual report](https://disc.static.szse.cn/disc/disk03/finalpage/2026-04-25/7a6aee81-14a8-4c51-80b6-1f23d9cdaef5.PDF). At Home Group, with 260 US decor stores, entered Chapter 11 on 16 June 2025 with USD 600 million of debtor-in-possession financing, citing "the impact of tariffs", its [release](https://business.mammothtimes.com/mammothtimes/article/bizwire-2025-6-16-at-home-group-enters-agreement-to-facilitate-ownership-transition-and-position-business-for-long-term-success) states.

Rules and duties take 0.30 points. California's AB 1817 bars textile articles, including furnishings and bedding, with intentionally added PFAS from 1 January 2025, with the total organic fluorine limit falling from 100 ppm to 50 ppm on 1 January 2027, the [chaptered text](https://legiscan.com/CA/text/AB1817/2021) shows, which removes stain-repellent finishes from some throws. Europe's textile producer responsibility fees, covered in the regulation section, add cost from 2028. Douglas Insights estimates these rules add about 1% to 2% to the landed cost of an imported throw.

## Which region buys the most plush throws, and where is growth fastest?

North America buys the most plush throws, USD 3.59 billion or 31.0% of 2025 value, because US households own several each and replace them often. The Middle East and Africa grow fastest, 4.8% a year to USD 1.30 billion.

| Region | Value 2025 | Share 2025 | Value 2026 | CAGR 2026-2035 | Value 2035 |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| North America | USD 3.59 billion | 31.0% | USD 3.69 billion | 2.6% | USD 4.64 billion |
| Asia Pacific | USD 3.25 billion | 28.0% | USD 3.39 billion | 4.6% | USD 5.09 billion |
| Europe | USD 3.13 billion | 27.0% | USD 3.22 billion | 2.9% | USD 4.16 billion |
| Latin America | USD 811 million | 7.0% | USD 846 million | 4.3% | USD 1.24 billion |
| Middle East and Africa | USD 811 million | 7.0% | USD 850 million | 4.8% | USD 1.30 billion |

North America leads on spending per household. US imports of synthetic-fibre blankets reached USD 1.10 billion in 2025, with USD 931 million from China, the [US Comtrade import data](https://comtradeapi.un.org/public/v1/preview/C/A/HS?reporterCode=842&period=2025&cmdCode=630140&flowCode=M) show, and Douglas Insights estimates about 55% of that value is throws. Regional value grows 2.6% a year, the slowest, to USD 4.64 billion, as the region is close to saturation.

Asia Pacific, USD 3.25 billion, grows 4.6% and overtakes North America by about 2033 on Chinese, Indian and Southeast Asian demand; Japan imported USD 105.7 million of Chinese synthetic blankets in 2025, the [destination data](https://comtradeapi.un.org/public/v1/preview/C/A/HS?reporterCode=156&period=2025&cmdCode=630140&flowCode=X) show. Europe, USD 3.13 billion, grows 2.9%; the EU imported USD 459 million of synthetic blankets from outside the bloc in 2025, [Comtrade](https://comtradeapi.un.org/public/v1/preview/C/A/HS?reporterCode=97&period=2025&cmdCode=630140&flowCode=M&partnerCode=0) shows. Latin America, USD 811 million, grows 4.3%, and the Middle East and Africa, USD 811 million, grow 4.8% on Gulf demand for heavy plush blankets. Regional values sum to USD 12.0 billion in 2026 and USD 16.4 billion in 2035, 0.22% above the headline.

## Which companies lead plush throw supply and retail?

No company holds more than about 4% of plush throw sales, Douglas Insights estimates; the largest sellers, Walmart, Target, IKEA, Williams-Sonoma and Amazon marketplace brands, source most throws from Chinese makers in Zhejiang and Jiangsu.

| Company | Role | Latest reported figure | Source date |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Target | Mass retailer, private-label home brands | Home furnishings and decor USD 15.6 billion, down 6.5% | 2025 annual report |
| Walmart | Mass retailer, Mainstays and Better Homes & Gardens | Fiscal 2026 revenue USD 713 billion | February 2026 |
| Ingka Group (IKEA) | Furnishing retailer | FY25 revenue EUR 41.5 billion, down 0.9% | FY25 annual summary |
| Williams-Sonoma | Pottery Barn, West Elm | FY2025 net revenues USD 7.81 billion | 18 March 2026 |
| RH | Luxury furnishings | FY2025 net revenues USD 3.44 billion, up 8.1% | 31 March 2026 |
| Luolai Lifestyle | Chinese home-textile brand | 2025 revenue RMB 4.84 billion, up 6.13% | April 2026 |
| Fuanna | Chinese home-textile brand | 2025 revenue RMB 2.58 billion, down 14.16% | April 2026 |
| Hunan Mengjie | Chinese home-textile brand | 2025 revenue RMB 1.68 billion, down 1.94% | April 2026 |

Mass retailers dominate units. Ingka Group, IKEA's largest franchisee, earned EUR 41.5 billion of revenue in the year to August 2025, down 0.9%, with 73.8% of retail sales in Europe, its [annual summary](https://assets.site.ingka.com/ingka-com/reports/ingka-group-annual-report-summary-fy25.pdf) shows. Williams-Sonoma, owner of Pottery Barn, grew fiscal 2025 net revenues to USD 7.81 billion, but Pottery Barn comparable sales rose only 0.4% and fell 2.3% in the fourth quarter, with about USD 80 million of extra tariff costs in inventory, its [results of 18 March 2026](https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20260318215294/en/Williams-Sonoma-Inc.-announces-strong-fourth-quarter-and-fiscal-year-2025-results) show. RH grew net revenues 8.1% to USD 3.44 billion, though tariff-related resourcing cost it about USD 30 million of sales, its [filing of 31 March 2026](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1528849/000110465926037775/rh-20260331xex99d2.htm) states.

Chinese brands lead their home market. Luolai's quilts rose 17.53% to RMB 1.87 billion while standard bedding sets rose 1.04%, its [2025 report](https://pdf.dfcfw.com/pdf/H2_AN202604221821456307_1.pdf) shows. Fuanna's revenue fell 14.16% to RMB 2.58 billion and its net profit fell 37.95%, its [2025 summary](https://pdf.dfcfw.com/pdf/H2_AN202604241821564321_1.pdf) shows, and Mengjie's exports more than doubled, up 116.74% to RMB 107.0 million, its [annual report](https://disc.static.szse.cn/disc/disk03/finalpage/2026-04-25/7a6aee81-14a8-4c51-80b6-1f23d9cdaef5.PDF) states. Walmart reported fiscal 2026 revenue of USD 713 billion in its [fourth-quarter release](https://seekingalpha.com/pr/20405327). Welspun Living, India's largest home-textile exporter, saw home-textile revenue fall 9.1% to INR 89.4 billion in the year to March 2026, its [presentation of 15 May 2026](https://nsearchives.nseindia.com/corporate/WELSPUNIND_15052026141712_Reg30_Presentation_15052026_signed.pdf) shows.

## How much does a plush throw cost, from a USD 10 fleece to a wool heirloom?

A plush throw costs an average USD 19.0 at retail in 2025, Douglas Insights estimates, from about USD 8 for a promotional fleece to USD 150 or more for wool, cashmere or designer faux fur.

Factory prices fell in 2025. China's synthetic-blanket export unit value dropped to USD 4.01 a kilogram from USD 4.45 in 2024, about 9.7% lower, calculated from the [Comtrade data](https://comtradeapi.un.org/public/v1/preview/C/A/HS?reporterCode=156&period=2025&cmdCode=630140&flowCode=X&partnerCode=0). Polyester inputs fell with oil: Tongkun, China's largest polyester filament maker, paid 13.87% less for paraxylene and 15.11% less for purified terephthalic acid in 2025, while China's filament output rose 3.4% to 45.6 million tonnes, its [2025 annual report](https://pdf.dfcfw.com/pdf/H2_AN202604281821674900_1.pdf) shows. Douglas Insights puts the price ladder at USD 8 to USD 20 for polyester fleece, USD 20 to USD 45 for sherpa and faux fur, USD 30 to USD 90 for knitted and chenille, USD 40 to USD 120 for weighted throws and USD 60 to USD 300 for wool and cashmere.

Average retail price rises 1.3% a year in our base case, to about USD 21.6 in 2035. Factory prices stay flat in real terms while polyester capacity stays ahead of demand, but mix moves toward sherpa, knits and weighted throws, which adds about 0.8 points, and landed-cost increases from duties and fees add about 0.5 points, a Douglas Insights estimate. Each USD 1 change in the average retail price moves 2025 value by about USD 610 million.

## What if home spending rebounds or stays weak: what is the 2035 plush throw forecast?

The plush throw market ends 2035 between USD 14.1 billion and USD 18.8 billion across our three cases, around a base of USD 16.4 billion. US and Chinese home spending sets most of the spread.

| Case | Volume leg | Price leg | Revenue rate | 2035 value |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Slower | 1.20% | 0.80% | 2.01% | USD 14.1 billion |
| Base case | 2.20% | 1.30% | 3.53% | USD 16.4 billion |
| Faster | 3.00% | 1.90% | 4.96% | USD 18.8 billion |

In the slower case US housing turnover stays low, Chinese home-textile sales keep falling at 2025 rates and retailers cut seasonal ranges, taking 1.0 point off volume and 0.5 points off price. In the faster case mortgage rates fall, Gulf and Indian demand keeps rising and weighted and cooling throws widen the season, adding 0.8 points of volume and 0.6 points of price. One extra point of yearly revenue growth adds about USD 1.6 billion to 2035 value, a Douglas Insights estimate.

Live signals sit slightly below the base case for 2026. Target's 6.5% category fall and Fuanna's 14.16% revenue fall point down, while Luolai's 6.13% growth, RH's 8.1% growth and rising Chinese export tonnage point up. The signal to watch is China's 2026 synthetic-blanket export value against USD 3.41 billion in 2025.

## Which rules shape plush throws, from EU textile EPR to US tariffs?

Three rule sets shape plush throws: the EU's textile extended producer responsibility under the revised Waste Framework Directive, US state PFAS bans in textiles, and US tariff law after the Supreme Court's IEEPA ruling.

Europe's waste rules name blankets directly. Directive (EU) 2025/1892 lists "6301 Blankets and travelling rugs" in its scope, requires transposition by 17 June 2027 and textile EPR schemes by 17 April 2028, and notes that 73% of clothes and household textiles consumed in Europe are imported, the [Official Journal text](https://eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-content/EN/TXT/HTML/?uri=OJ:L_202501892) shows; it entered into force on 16 October 2025, the [European Commission](https://environment.ec.europa.eu/waste/framework/framework_directive.htm) confirms. The Commission's ecodesign working plan of 16 April 2025 also lists textiles, with a focus on apparel, among priority products for digital product passports, its [release](https://ec.europa.eu/commission/presscorner/api/files/document/print/en/ip_25_1071/IP_25_1071_EN.pdf) states. Douglas Insights estimates EPR fees at EUR 0.05 to EUR 0.15 per throw.

In the United States, the federal general wearing apparel flammability standard, 16 CFR 1610, covers clothing textiles, so throws face no specific federal flammability rule, the [eCFR text](https://www.ecfr.gov/api/versioner/v1/full/2026-01-01/title-16.xml?part=1610&section=1610.1) shows, while [California's AB 1817](https://legiscan.com/CA/text/AB1817/2021) sets PFAS limits. On trade, the Supreme Court held on 20 February 2026 that the International Emergency Economic Powers Act does not authorise tariffs, leaving Section 301 duties in place, the [Congressional Research Service](https://www.everycrsreport.com/reports/LSB11398.html) summarises. China's share of US synthetic-blanket imports fell to 84.5% in 2025 from 91.8% in 2024, the [Comtrade import data](https://comtradeapi.un.org/public/v1/preview/C/A/HS?reporterCode=842&period=2025&cmdCode=630140&flowCode=M) show. Safety rules also shape labels: the US Consumer Product Safety Commission's nursery report of March 2026 links about 67% of crib deaths to cluttered sleep spaces including blankets, its [annual report](https://www.cpsc.gov/s3fs-public/Nursery-Products-Annual-Report-2025.pdf) shows, so throws carry warnings against infant use.

## Douglas Exclusive: the Throw Sourcing Shift Gauge

The Throw Sourcing Shift Gauge is a Douglas Insights model built from 12 inputs: 7 official trade and statistics datasets and 5 company filings. It tracks how fast throw sourcing leaves China and how landed prices respond.

| Date | Input | What it moves |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 2024 full year | US synthetic-blanket imports USD 1.37 billion, China 91.8% | Baseline share |
| 2025 full year | US synthetic-blanket imports USD 1.10 billion, China 84.5% | China share |
| 2025 full year | US imports from Vietnam USD 86.2 million | Alternative supply |
| 2025 full year | China synthetic-blanket exports USD 3.41 billion, 849.7 million kg | Factory price |
| 2025 full year | China exports to the US USD 1.16 billion, down 16.6% | US exposure |
| 2025 full year | EU extra-bloc synthetic-blanket imports USD 459 million | Europe supply |
| 2025 full year | US Census: home furnishings stores USD 127.3 billion | US demand |
| 16 June 2025 | At Home Chapter 11 citing tariffs | US retail capacity |
| 18 March 2026 | Williams-Sonoma: about USD 80 million tariff cost | Landed cost |
| 31 March 2026 | RH: USD 30 million tariff resourcing hit | Landed cost |
| 29 April 2026 | Tongkun: PTA price down 15.11% | Fibre cost |
| 15 May 2026 | Welspun Living: home textiles down 9.1% | India supply |

The finding, a Douglas Insights estimate: China's share of US throw imports falls from about 92% in 2024 to about 70% by 2030, with Vietnam, India and Cambodia taking most of the difference. Because Chinese brushing and printing lines are 15% to 25% cheaper per kilogram than new lines elsewhere, each 10 points of share moved out of China adds about 1.5% to the US landed cost of a fleece throw.

The gauge changes how to read the market. The 19.8% fall in US synthetic-blanket import value in 2025 reflects lower unit prices, stock run-down and sourcing shifts more than lower use, since US home furnishings store sales still rose 1.9%. Douglas Insights therefore models US throw volume from household replacement rates, not from import value, and adds the sourcing shift to the price leg.

## How does the methodology turn 610 million throws into USD 11.6 billion?

Our methodology multiplies about 610 million plush throws sold in 2025 by an average retail price of USD 19.0 to reach USD 11.6 billion, then grows pieces 2.2% and price 1.3% a year.

The model covers 6 materials and 5 regions, using 50 data points, 21 sourced and 29 modelled. Pieces come from households multiplied by throws bought per household a year, from about 1.0 in North America to about 0.15 in South Asia, cross-checked against trade tonnage at about 0.6 to 0.9 kg per throw; prices come from retailer ranges and company filings, Douglas Insights estimates. Arithmetic: 610 million x USD 19.0 = USD 11.6 billion; USD 11.6 billion x (1.022 x 1.013)^10 = USD 16.4 billion. Pieces reach about 758 million in 2035.

Two cross-checks agree. First, if throws are about 45% of China's 849.7 million kg of synthetic-blanket exports at 0.7 kg each, they account for about 546 million pieces, close to our world total once Chinese home sales and other suppliers are added and stock changes removed. Second, US imports of about USD 600 million of throws at a typical 5 to 6 times retail markup give about USD 3.3 billion, close to our USD 3.59 billion for North America. Currency conversions use Douglas Insights assumptions of RMB 7.1, INR 88 and EUR 0.885 per dollar. AI tools help draft the text and automated checks test the arithmetic and links; the Douglas Insights research desk chooses the sources, builds the model and approves publication, as our [editorial standards](https://www.douglasinsights.com/editorial-standards/) explain.
