## Key takeaways

- The processed vitamin C market is worth USD 1.07 billion in 2025 and USD 1.59 billion in 2035, a 4.02% CAGR.
- About 262,000 tonnes at a blended USD 4.10 a kilogram form the 2025 base; tonnes grow 3.4% a year and price 0.6%.
- China exported 224,793 tonnes in 2025, up 18.0%, while the export unit value fell to USD 2.83 a kilogram from USD 3.24.
- CSPC's vitamin C sales rose 11.9% in 2025 but fell 15.5% in the first half of 2026 on lower prices.
- EU maximum levels for supplements, due for adoption in 2028, are the main regulatory risk to European demand.

China exported 224,793 tonnes of vitamin C worth USD 636.14 million in 2025, up 18.0% in volume but only 3.0% in value on 2024, as the export unit value slid from USD 3.24 to USD 2.83 a kilogram, China customs data in the [UN Comtrade database](https://comtradeapi.un.org/public/v1/preview/C/A/HS?reporterCode=156&period=2025&cmdCode=293627&flowCode=X&partnerCode=0) show. The processed vitamin C market covers ascorbic acid and the forms made from it, including coated and granulated grades, sodium and calcium ascorbate, ascorbyl palmitate and stabilised cosmetic derivatives, valued at the price producers and processors realise. Douglas Insights sizes it at USD 1.07 billion in 2025, about 262,000 tonnes at a blended USD 4.10 a kilogram, rising to USD 1.59 billion in 2035, a 4.02% compound annual growth rate (CAGR). The study sits in our [functional ingredients coverage](https://www.douglasinsights.com/industry/functional-ingredients/), beside the [Food Additives Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/food-additives-market/), [Functional Food Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/functional-food-market/) and [Beauty Supplements Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/beauty-supplements-market/) reports; every figure follows the Douglas Insights [research methodology](https://www.douglasinsights.com/research-methodology/).

## Which processed vitamin C form earns most: ascorbic acid, ascorbates or derivatives?

Plain ascorbic acid powder and crystals earn 50.0% of 2025 value, about USD 537 million, Douglas Insights estimates. Stabilised cosmetic derivatives grow fastest, 6.2% a year to USD 196 million by 2035.

| Product form | Share 2025 | Value 2025 | CAGR 2026-2035 | Value 2035 |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Ascorbic acid powder and crystals | 50.0% | USD 537 million | 3.4% | USD 750 million |
| Sodium ascorbate | 14.0% | USD 150 million | 4.0% | USD 223 million |
| Coated and granulated (direct compression) ascorbic acid | 12.0% | USD 129 million | 4.6% | USD 202 million |
| Stabilised cosmetic derivatives (SAP, MAP, ascorbyl glucoside, ethyl ascorbic acid) | 10.0% | USD 107 million | 6.2% | USD 196 million |
| Calcium and other mineral ascorbates | 7.0% | USD 75 million | 4.2% | USD 114 million |
| Ascorbyl palmitate | 7.0% | USD 75 million | 4.4% | USD 116 million |

Ascorbic acid leads because it is the cheapest form and the one most tablets, drink powders, juices, cured meats and premixes use directly. Its share erodes slowly, from 50.0% to about 47% by 2035 in our model, as buyers pay more for forms that solve a processing problem. Coated and granulated grades, USD 129 million, flow and compress without sticking, so supplement tableting lines use them for high-dose tablets; they grow 4.6% a year. Sodium ascorbate, USD 150 million, is the buffered, less acidic form used in chewables, injections and meat curing, and grows 4.0%.

Ascorbyl palmitate, USD 75 million, is the fat-soluble ester that protects oils, infant formula fats and fried snacks from going rancid, and grows 4.4%. Calcium and other mineral ascorbates, USD 75 million, serve buffered supplement formulas and grow 4.2%. Stabilised cosmetic derivatives are small in tonnes but high in price: sodium ascorbyl phosphate, magnesium ascorbyl phosphate, ascorbyl glucoside and 3-O-ethyl ascorbic acid survive in serums and creams where plain ascorbic acid oxidises within weeks. Segment values for 2035 sum to USD 1.60 billion, 0.44% above the headline.

## What drives processed vitamin C demand: supplements, fortified foods or feed?

Processed vitamin C volume rises 3.4% a year in our base case, from about 262,000 tonnes in 2025 to about 366,000 tonnes in 2035. Four drivers add 4.20 points of gross growth; restraints remove 0.80 points.

### Dietary supplements and immune products: 1.60 points

Supplements are the largest driver, worth 1.60 points. About 75% of US adults used dietary supplements in 2024, against 74% a year earlier, the Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN) consumer survey run by Ipsos showed, [Nutraceuticals World reported on 5 November 2024](https://www.nutraceuticalsworld.com/breaking-news/crn-consumer-survey-finds-consistent-supplement-usage-and-trust-in-safety/). The US National Institutes of Health sets the recommended intake at 90 mg a day for men and 75 mg for women, 35 mg more for smokers, with an upper limit of 2,000 mg, its [fact sheet updated on 31 July 2025](https://ods.od.nih.gov/factsheets/VitaminC-HealthProfessional/) states. A typical 500 mg or 1,000 mg immune tablet therefore carries 5 to 13 times the daily need, and Douglas Insights estimates supplements take about 38% of world tonnes. The United States bought 35,754 tonnes of Chinese vitamin C worth USD 106.8 million in 2025, 16.8% of China's export value, the [Comtrade figures](https://comtradeapi.un.org/public/v1/preview/C/A/HS?reporterCode=156&period=2025&cmdCode=293627&flowCode=X&partnerCode=0) show.

### Food and beverage fortification and antioxidant use: 1.20 points

Food and drink add 1.20 points. Vitamin C is both a nutrient added to juices, cereals and infant formula and an antioxidant (E 300 to E 304) that stops colour and flavour loss in beverages, bread dough, cured meat and fats. The European Commission's Regulation (EU) 2025/1150 of 11 June 2025 authorised sodium ascorbate (E 301) as an antioxidant in microencapsulated vitamin A preparations for infant and follow-on formula at up to 50,000 mg/kg, [Food Compliance International reported](https://foodcomplianceinternational.com/industry-insight/news/5455-commission-authorizes-the-use-of-sodium-ascorbate-as-an-antioxidant-in-microencapsulated-vitamin-a-preparations-for-infant-formulae-and-follow-on-formulae). China's food additive use standard GB 2760-2024 took effect on 8 February 2025, the US Department of Agriculture's [Foreign Agricultural Service report CH2024-0059](https://fas.usda.gov/data/China-usage-standard-food-additives-finalized) notes. Douglas Insights estimates food and drink take about 32% of tonnes, growing 3.6% a year.

### Animal feed and aquaculture: 0.80 points

Feed adds 0.80 points. World compound feed output reached about 1.44 billion tonnes in 2025, up nearly 3%, with China at 330.06 million tonnes, up 4.8%, and the United States at 267.38 million tonnes, the Alltech Agri-Food Outlook released on 21 April 2026 shows, [World Grain reported](https://www.world-grain.com/articles/22661-alltech-global-feed-output-soars-in-2025). Fish and shrimp cannot make their own vitamin C, so aquafeed carries stabilised phosphate forms, and poultry under heat stress gets it in drinking water. Douglas Insights estimates feed takes about 18% of tonnes, and each 1% rise in aquafeed output adds about 0.1 points to vitamin C volume growth.

### Cosmetics and skin care: 0.60 points

Skin care adds 0.60 points, the fastest-growing use by rate. Brightening serums use 5% to 20% vitamin C or a derivative, far above the 0.1% to 0.5% antioxidant dose in a food. dsm-firmenich, owner of the Stay-C 50 sodium ascorbyl phosphate brand, grew Health, Nutrition and Care sales to EUR 515 million in the third quarter of 2026, up 5% like for like, its [trading update of 4 November 2026](https://globenewswire.com/news-release/2026/11/04/3394999/0/en/dsm-firmenich-reports-q3-2026-trading-update.html) states. Douglas Insights estimates cosmetics take about 4% of tonnes but 12% of value. Summed, 1.60 + 1.20 + 0.80 + 0.60 = 4.20 points, a Douglas Insights estimate.

## What restrains processed vitamin C: lower EU limits or post-pandemic demand?

Two restraints remove 0.80 points a year from processed vitamin C volume: tighter European maximum levels in supplements take 0.35 points, and normalising immune-supplement demand and trading down take 0.45 points.

The European Commission plans a revised draft of maximum levels for vitamins and minerals in supplements and fortified foods for public consultation in the third quarter of 2026 and formal adoption in the first quarter of 2028, with vitamin C among the nutrients facing the largest cuts in supplements, [NutritionInsight reported on 4 June 2026](https://www.nutritioninsight.com/news/eu-vitamin-mineral-limits-supplements-fortified-foods.html). National rules still vary: Luxembourg raised its vitamin C limit in supplements from 240 mg to 1,000 mg a day, [NutraIngredients reported on 10 September 2026](https://www.nutraingredients.com/Article/2026/09/10/luxembourg-introduces-new-mpls-for-vitamins-and-minerals-in-supplements/). Douglas Insights estimates that a harmonised EU cap near 1,000 mg would trim about 8% of European supplement tonnes from 2028, since 1,000 mg effervescent and slow-release tablets are a large share of shelf space.

The second restraint is a demand hangover. Buyers stocked up on immune products in 2020 to 2022, and adult usage in the United States has plateaued near 75%, the [CRN survey](https://www.nutraceuticalsworld.com/breaking-news/crn-consumer-survey-finds-consistent-supplement-usage-and-trust-in-safety/) shows, so growth now comes from population and dose rather than new users. Consumers also trade down to private-label tablets and gummies with 100 mg to 250 mg doses, which use less vitamin C per serving. Douglas Insights estimates the average supplement dose falls about 1% a year to 2030, which takes about 0.45 points off volume.

## Which region buys the most processed vitamin C, and where is growth fastest?

Asia Pacific buys the most processed vitamin C, USD 354 million or 33.0% of 2025 value, because China, India and Southeast Asia lead feed and drink output. It also grows fastest, 4.8% a year to USD 567 million by 2035.

| Region | Value 2025 | Share 2025 | Value 2026 | CAGR 2026-2035 | Value 2035 |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Asia Pacific | USD 354 million | 33.0% | USD 372 million | 4.8% | USD 567 million |
| North America | USD 290 million | 27.0% | USD 300 million | 3.5% | USD 409 million |
| Europe | USD 269 million | 25.0% | USD 277 million | 3.2% | USD 368 million |
| Latin America | USD 97 million | 9.0% | USD 101 million | 4.4% | USD 149 million |
| Middle East and Africa | USD 64 million | 6.0% | USD 67 million | 4.6% | USD 101 million |

Asia Pacific leads on use as well as supply. Japan took 14,891 tonnes of Chinese vitamin C worth USD 53.6 million in 2025 and India 10,940 tonnes worth USD 31.5 million, the [Comtrade data](https://comtradeapi.un.org/public/v1/preview/C/A/HS?reporterCode=156&period=2025&cmdCode=293627&flowCode=X&partnerCode=0) show, and China's own feed mills, drinks makers and pharmacies use an estimated 38,000 tonnes, a Douglas Insights estimate. North America, USD 290 million, grows 3.5% on supplements, where 1,000 mg tablets and effervescent powders remain common.

Europe, USD 269 million, grows 3.2%, the slowest, held back by the coming maximum levels. Germany bought 24,400 tonnes from China worth USD 63.1 million in 2025 and the Netherlands 12,426 tonnes worth USD 36.4 million, much of it for premix blending and re-export, the [same data](https://comtradeapi.un.org/public/v1/preview/C/A/HS?reporterCode=156&period=2025&cmdCode=293627&flowCode=X&partnerCode=0) show. Latin America, USD 97 million, grows 4.4% from Brazilian poultry and juice, and the Middle East and Africa, USD 64 million, grow 4.6% from fortified flour and drinks. Regional values sum to USD 1.12 billion in 2026 and USD 1.59 billion in 2035, within 0.02% of the headline.

## Which companies dominate processed vitamin C supply?

Four Chinese producers, CSPC Pharmaceutical, Northeast Pharmaceutical, Shandong Luwei and Shandong Tianli, plus dsm-firmenich hold about 70% of processed vitamin C value, Douglas Insights estimates; CSPC is the largest at about 29%.

| Company | Role | Latest reported figure | Source date |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| CSPC Pharmaceutical Group | Ascorbic acid and ascorbates (Weisheng) | 2025 vitamin C sales RMB 2.23 billion, up 11.9% | 25 March 2026 |
| CSPC Pharmaceutical Group | Same | H1 2026 vitamin C sales RMB 1.01 billion, down 15.5% | 20 August 2026 |
| Northeast Pharmaceutical Group | Ascorbic acid and pharmaceuticals | 2025 group revenue RMB 7.075 billion | 9 April 2026 |
| dsm-firmenich | Dalry, Scotland, Europe's only vitamin C plant; Stay-C 50 | Vitamins moving to Noviwest under CVC deal | 9 February and 22 October 2026 |
| Shandong Luwei, Shandong Tianli | Ascorbic acid and derivatives | No separate figures used | Douglas Insights estimate |

CSPC sets the pace. Its vitamin C sales rose 11.9% to RMB 2.23 billion in 2025, "primarily driven by rising demand in overseas markets", while group revenue fell 10.4% to RMB 26.006 billion, its [annual results of 25 March 2026](https://doc.irasia.com/listco/hk/cspc/annual/2025/res.pdf) show. At the 2025 average of 7.1875 yuan per dollar from the [US Federal Reserve](https://fred.stlouisfed.org/series/AEXCHUS), that is about USD 310 million, or 29% of our market. Its first-half 2026 vitamin C sales then fell 15.5% to RMB 1.01 billion "primarily due to a decline in product selling prices", as the "release of industry capacity resulted in increased supply and intensified competition", its [interim results of 20 August 2026](https://www1.hkexnews.hk/listedco/listconews/sehk/2026/0820/2026082000302.pdf) state.

dsm-firmenich is the only large producer outside China. Its Dalry plant in Scotland has made vitamin C for more than 40 years and is Europe's only supplier, while about 90% of vitamin C comes from China, [NutraIngredients reported on 17 October 2025](https://www.nutraingredients.com/Article/2025/10/17/inside-dsm-firmenichs-dalry-site-the-only-supplier-of-vitamin-c-in-europe). On 9 February 2026 the group agreed to sell its Animal Nutrition and Health unit, with about EUR 3.5 billion of 2025 sales, to CVC Capital Partners for an enterprise value of about EUR 2.2 billion, placing vitamins, carotenoids and aroma ingredients in a separate company, its [release](https://www.dsm-firmenich.com/anh/news/press-releases/2026/2026-02-09-dsm-firmenich-announces-agreement-to-divest-animal-nutrition-and-health-to-cvc-capital-partners.html) states. That company was named Noviwest, [Drovers reported on 22 October 2026](https://www.drovers.com/news/dsm-firmenich-unveils-noviwest-and-panavora-future-standalone-animal-health-businesses), and the unit was still held for sale on 4 November 2026. Northeast Pharmaceutical earned RMB 7.075 billion of revenue and RMB 260 million of net profit in 2025, [Shanghai Securities News reported on 9 April 2026](https://news.10jqka.com.cn/20260409/c675846609.shtml); Japanese derivative specialists such as Hayashibara supply ascorbyl glucoside to skin care.

## How much does processed vitamin C cost per kilogram, from ascorbic acid to cosmetic esters?

Processed vitamin C realises a blended USD 4.10 a kilogram in 2025, Douglas Insights estimates: about USD 2.83 for Chinese export ascorbic acid, USD 15 to USD 20 for ascorbyl palmitate, over USD 30 for cosmetic derivatives.

The export unit value is the benchmark. Chinese ascorbic acid averaged USD 2.83 a kilogram in 2025 against USD 3.24 in 2024, down about 13%, calculated from the [Comtrade figures](https://comtradeapi.un.org/public/v1/preview/C/A/HS?reporterCode=156&period=2025&cmdCode=293627&flowCode=X&partnerCode=0), and December 2025 shipments averaged about USD 2.57, [Bloominglobal reported on 9 February 2026](https://www.bloominglobal.com/media/detail/china-vitamin-c-exports-jump-in-volume-as-prices-stay-under-pressure). That is close to the cash cost of the two-step fermentation route from glucose and sorbitol, a Douglas Insights estimate, and CSPC blamed lower selling prices, not lower demand, for its first-half 2026 fall. Coated grades carry a premium of about 30% to 50% over plain powder and sodium ascorbate about 20% to 40%, Douglas Insights estimates.

Average price rises 0.6% a year in our base case, to about USD 4.35 a kilogram in 2035. Like-for-like ascorbic acid prices stay near cost for two to three years while new capacity is absorbed, then recover about 1% a year as the weakest plants close, and a richer mix of coated grades and cosmetic derivatives adds about 0.3 points, Douglas Insights estimates. Each USD 0.10 change in the blended kilogram price moves 2025 value by about USD 26 million.

## What if prices stay at cost or skin care booms: what is the 2035 forecast?

The processed vitamin C market ends 2035 between USD 1.34 billion and USD 1.84 billion across our three cases, around a base of USD 1.59 billion. Chinese pricing discipline and the EU cap set most of the spread.

| Case | Tonnage leg | Price leg | Revenue rate | 2035 value |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Slower | 2.20% | 0.00% | 2.20% | USD 1.34 billion |
| Base case | 3.40% | 0.60% | 4.02% | USD 1.59 billion |
| Faster | 4.40% | 1.10% | 5.55% | USD 1.84 billion |

In the slower case the EU adopts a low cap in 2028, US supplement doses keep falling and Chinese makers keep running plants at cost, taking 1.2 points off tonnage and 0.6 points off price. In the faster case aquafeed and fortified drinks grow faster in Asia and Africa, skin care derivatives keep their 6% pace and two or three high-cost plants close, adding 1.0 point of tonnage and 0.5 points of price. One extra point of yearly revenue growth adds about USD 160 million to 2035 value, a Douglas Insights estimate.

Live signals point below the base case for 2026 and near it afterwards. CSPC's 15.5% first-half fall and December's USD 2.57 export value show weak pricing, while China's 18.0% export volume growth in 2025 shows demand holding. The signal to watch is China's 2026 full-year export unit value against the 2025 average of USD 2.83.

## Which rules shape processed vitamin C, from EU maximum levels to US tariffs?

Three rule sets shape processed vitamin C trade and use: European maximum levels in supplements and foods, food additive standards in China and the EU, and US tariff exemptions for vitamin ingredients.

The European Commission's maximum levels process, set out under Regulation (EC) No 1925/2006 and the food supplements directive, is the largest open question, with consultation planned for the third quarter of 2026 and adoption in the first quarter of 2028, [NutritionInsight reported](https://www.nutritioninsight.com/news/eu-vitamin-mineral-limits-supplements-fortified-foods.html). Until then member states set their own limits, as [Luxembourg did in September 2026](https://www.nutraingredients.com/Article/2026/09/10/luxembourg-introduces-new-mpls-for-vitamins-and-minerals-in-supplements/). On additives, the EU widened sodium ascorbate use under Regulation (EU) 2025/1150 and China's GB 2760-2024 replaced the 2014 standard from 8 February 2025, per the [USDA report](https://fas.usda.gov/data/China-usage-standard-food-additives-finalized).

In trade, vitamins including vitamin C were listed in Annex II of the US reciprocal-tariff executive order of 2 April 2025 and exempted from those duties, [Vitamin Retailer reported on 4 April 2025](https://vitaminretailer.com/white-house-announces-tariff-exemptions-for-key-dietary-supplement-ingredients/), which kept US buyers on Chinese supply. Douglas Insights found no new anti-dumping case on Chinese vitamin C opened in 2025 or 2026; India's Directorate General of Trade Remedies had earlier recommended duties of USD 3.20 to USD 3.55 a kilogram, [Deccan Herald reported](https://www.deccanherald.com/national/dgtr-recommends-anti-dumping-duty-on-vitamin-c-from-china-for-five-years-1027965.html).

## Douglas Exclusive: the Ascorbate Cost Floor Gauge for processed vitamin C

The Ascorbate Cost Floor Gauge is a Douglas Insights model built from 12 inputs: 4 company filings or releases, 3 official datasets and 5 trade reports. It measures how far vitamin C prices sit above producers' cash cost.

| Date | Input | What it moves |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 4 April 2025 | US Annex II tariff exemption for vitamins | US import cost |
| 31 July 2025 | NIH vitamin C fact sheet: 75 to 90 mg intake | Dose base |
| 17 October 2025 | dsm-firmenich Dalry: Europe's only plant | Non-China supply |
| 2025 full year | China exports 224,793 t at USD 2.83/kg | Export price |
| 2025 full year | Federal Reserve: 7.1875 yuan per dollar | Cost in dollars |
| 9 February 2026 | dsm-firmenich ANH sale to CVC | Supply structure |
| 9 February 2026 | Bloominglobal: December 2025 at USD 2.57/kg | Exit price |
| 25 March 2026 | CSPC 2025 vitamin C sales up 11.9% | Leader volume |
| 21 April 2026 | Alltech: 1.44 billion t feed | Feed demand |
| 4 June 2026 | EU maximum levels timeline | Europe dose cap |
| 20 August 2026 | CSPC H1 2026 vitamin C sales down 15.5% | Price pressure |
| 22 October 2026 | Noviwest named for vitamins | Supply structure |

The finding, a Douglas Insights estimate: the cash cost of Chinese ascorbic acid, mainly glucose, energy and fermentation inputs, sits near USD 2.40 to USD 2.60 a kilogram, so the 2025 average of USD 2.83 left a margin of about 10% to 15%, and December's USD 2.57 left almost none. In past troughs prices recovered within 18 to 30 months as smaller plants stopped, so the gauge points to a floor in 2026 and a recovery to about USD 3.10 by 2028.

The gauge changes how to read the market. Revenue falls at producers such as CSPC in 2026 reflect price at the cost floor, not falling use: China's export tonnes rose 18.0% in 2025. Douglas Insights therefore builds value from tonnes and a price path tied to cost, and expects tonnage growth near 3.4% a year even while value is flat in 2026.

## How does the methodology turn 262,000 tonnes into USD 1.07 billion?

Our methodology multiplies about 262,000 tonnes of processed vitamin C in 2025 by a blended USD 4.10 a kilogram to reach USD 1.07 billion, then grows tonnes 3.4% and price 0.6% a year.

The model covers 6 product forms and 5 regions, using 48 data points, 19 sourced and 29 modelled. Tonnes come from a supply build: 224,793 tonnes of Chinese exports, less about 15,000 tonnes of stock built by importers in 2025, plus about 38,000 tonnes of Chinese domestic use and about 14,000 tonnes made outside China, Douglas Insights estimates. Arithmetic: 262,000 tonnes x USD 4.10 = USD 1.07 billion; USD 1.07 billion x (1.034 x 1.006)^10 = USD 1.59 billion. Tonnes reach about 271,000 in 2026 and 366,000 in 2035.

Two cross-checks agree. First, CSPC's 2025 vitamin C sales of about USD 310 million equal 29% of our value, in line with its rank as the largest producer. Second, China's USD 636.14 million of export value plus domestic use at export prices gives about USD 0.74 billion of ascorbic acid at factory gate, which, with processing margins on derivatives and coated grades, matches our USD 1.07 billion.
