## Key takeaways

- Resilient flooring is worth USD 40.88 billion in 2025 and USD 61.91 billion by 2035, a 4.24% annual rate.
- Rigid core vinyl plank is the fastest product at 6.71% a year, reaching USD 21.76 billion by 2035.
- Asia Pacific leads with USD 13.94 billion in 2025 and grows 5.83% a year.
- The top three suppliers hold about 13.2% of revenue in Douglas Insights estimates, so pricing power is thin.
- Plasticizer scrutiny, import duties and weak construction remove 1.2 points from annual volume growth.

A luxury vinyl tile (LVT) rated Class III, Type B under ASTM International (ASTM) standard F1700 carries a 0.5 mm clear wear layer on a 2.5 mm body and must hold residual indentation under 8%, which is why a 2.5 mm product survives hospital bed traffic. Resilient flooring covers vinyl, linoleum and rubber floor coverings that recover from point loads: flexible and rigid core vinyl tile and plank, sheet vinyl, vinyl composition tile, linoleum and rubber sheet and tile. The Resilient Flooring Market comes to USD 40.88 billion in 2025, from 3.395 billion square metres at an average USD 12.04 per square metre, and Douglas Insights projects USD 61.91 billion by 2035, a 4.24% annual revenue rate. Ownership is consolidating too: the French market regulator, the Autorité des marchés financiers (AMF), cleared Tarkett Participation's buy-out offer and squeeze-out for Tarkett at EUR 17 per share on [5 June 2025](https://www.tarkett-group.com/app/uploads/2025/06/06182248/other-information-document-tarkett-06.06.2025.pdf), with the offeror already holding 90.32% of capital. ## Why are click-lock rigid core planks and carpet replacement lifting resilient flooring demand?

Volume adds 2.9% a year to resilient flooring through 2035, and four forces supply it: carpet replacement in homes, rigid core click-lock planks, clinical and school specification, and Asian housing. Together they move volume from 3.395 billion square metres in 2025 to 4.519 billion by 2035, before any price effect. Price is a separate leg.

Carpet replacement is the largest force, worth 1.2 points. Mohawk's [2025 annual report](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/851968/000085196826000011/mhk-20251231.htm) puts United States flooring sales at USD 33.2 billion in 2024, with resilient at 32.2% against 33.8% for carpet and rugs. That is USD 10.69 billion of resilient floors in one country, and the gap to carpet is now 1.6 points. Each kitchen, basement or rental unit that swaps broadloom for vinyl plank adds square metres without adding a new building. Renovation, not new floor area, does the work. Douglas Insights counts carpet replacement as 41% of the volume leg, the single largest share of new resilient flooring demand through 2035.

Rigid core construction contributes 0.9 points. A stone-plastic composite (SPC) core keeps planks flat over imperfect subfloors and lets a do-it-yourself buyer click boards together without adhesive. Mohawk describes its premium rigid range as stone-plastic composite products and has added hybrid versions free of polyvinyl chloride (PVC). Douglas Insights expects rigid core vinyl plank volume to grow 6.71% a year, the steepest of the six product lines. Big-box retail made it a weekend job. A 2.5 mm commercial tile still needs a trained installer and a trowel; a rigid plank needs a tapping block and a saw.

Healthcare and education specification adds 0.5 points. Sheet vinyl with welded seams and rubber flooring dominate operating theatres, wards and corridors because they clean without grout lines. Interface states in its [annual report](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/715787/000071578726000006/tile-20251228.htm) that its nora rubber floors are designed without PVC or phthalate plasticizers and are made in Weinheim, Germany, a pitch aimed squarely at these buyers. Infection control decides the spec.

Asian housing completion adds the final 0.3 points. Asia Pacific already holds 34.1% of resilient flooring revenue, and its apartment stock is moving from bare screed and ceramic to printed vinyl. The four contributions, 1.2, 0.9, 0.5 and 0.3 points, sum to the 2.9% volume leg. Price adds a separate 1.3% a year as buyers trade up to thicker wear layers. Small, but it compounds.

## What headwinds do phthalate scrutiny, import duties and slow housing starts put on resilient flooring?

Three headwinds take 1.2 points off resilient flooring volume growth: weak construction removes 0.5 points, PVC additive scrutiny 0.4 points and import duties 0.3 points. Without them, square metres would rise about 4.1% a year rather than 2.9%, so the 2035 value would sit roughly 12% higher.

Weak new construction removes 0.5 points. Tarkett's organic sales fell 0.8% in the first nine months of 2025 and its volumes fell 0.4%, with North America down 2.1% organically. Resilient flooring follows starts, not only renovation.

Plasticizer scrutiny removes 0.4 points. The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) found on [28 November 2023](https://echa.europa.eu/-/echa-identifies-risks-from-pvc-additives-and-microparticle-releases) that certain ortho-phthalate plasticizers in PVC are harmful to reproduction and that regulatory action would be needed. Specifiers in Europe already favour linoleum, rubber and phthalate-free vinyl, and every tender that drops flexible PVC trims resilient flooring volume by a fraction.

Import duties remove 0.3 points. Mohawk reports that tariffs raised its cost of goods sold on imported products and lowered gross margins, and Interface names its Korean-made luxury vinyl tile as its primary tariff exposure. Higher landed costs slow the swap from carpet in price-sensitive rental refits.

## Which resilient flooring product, flexible LVT, rigid core plank or sheet vinyl, makes the money?

Flexible luxury vinyl tile leads resilient flooring with 31.4% of 2025 revenue, USD 12.84 billion, because it serves both glue-down commercial floors and residential refits. Rigid core vinyl plank follows at 27.8% and grows fastest, at 6.71% a year, on click-lock installation.

| Resilient flooring product | Share 2025 | Value 2025 | Growth 2026-2035 | Value 2035 |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Flexible luxury vinyl tile | 31.4% | USD 12.84 billion | 3.92% | USD 18.85 billion |
| Rigid core vinyl plank | 27.8% | USD 11.36 billion | 6.71% | USD 21.76 billion |
| Sheet vinyl | 18.6% | USD 7.60 billion | 2.48% | USD 9.71 billion |
| Vinyl composition tile | 6.3% | USD 2.58 billion | -0.85% | USD 2.36 billion |
| Linoleum | 7.7% | USD 3.15 billion | 3.05% | USD 4.25 billion |
| Rubber flooring | 8.2% | USD 3.35 billion | 3.85% | USD 4.89 billion |

Flexible luxury vinyl tile, at USD 12.84 billion, is the workhorse of offices and shops; glue-down installation and a 0.5 mm wear layer keep it in commercial specifications. Rigid core vinyl plank brings USD 11.36 billion and reaches USD 21.76 billion by 2035, the fastest product at 6.71%, because homeowners install it themselves over old floors. Sheet vinyl earns USD 7.60 billion, carried by heat-welded hospital and kitchen floors that need no seams. Vinyl composition tile (VCT) holds USD 2.58 billion but shrinks 0.85% a year as schools and stores replace it with luxury vinyl tile. Linoleum, made from linseed oil, cork and wood flour, is worth USD 3.15 billion and grows 3.05% on demand for PVC-free floors. Rubber flooring adds USD 3.35 billion, with the highest price per square metre, for clinics, gyms and transport hubs.

## Where do resilient flooring sales concentrate, and is Asia Pacific outrunning North America?

Asia Pacific leads resilient flooring with USD 13.94 billion in 2025 and grows fastest, at 5.83% a year, as new apartments specify printed vinyl over ceramic. North America follows at USD 11.81 billion, where rigid core plank replaces carpet in existing homes.

North America grows 3.42% a year to USD 16.54 billion by 2035; Douglas Insights puts the United States at about 92.4% of the regional total, consistent with the USD 33.2 billion national flooring figure. Europe, at USD 10.06 billion, grows only 2.61% because renovation, not new building, sets the pace, and because PVC rules tilt tenders toward linoleum and rubber. Asia Pacific reaches USD 24.57 billion by 2035 on the back of urban housing and export-oriented plank factories. Latin America earns USD 2.82 billion and grows 4.71%, the second-fastest regional rate. The Middle East and Africa, at USD 2.25 billion growing 3.99%, is the wildcard: hospital and airport programmes in the Gulf can swing sheet vinyl and rubber orders by whole projects.

## Which companies supply resilient flooring at scale, from Mohawk to Gerflor?

The top three resilient flooring suppliers hold about 13.2% of 2025 revenue in Douglas Insights estimates, so the market is fragmented. Mohawk Industries leads with an estimated 5.2% share, followed by Tarkett at 4.2% and Gerflor at 3.8%, each built on owned vinyl capacity.

Mohawk Industries reported net sales of USD 10.8 billion for 2025 and calls itself one of the largest makers of luxury vinyl tile and sheet vinyl in the United States; its Flooring North America and Flooring Rest of World segments supplied 34% and 26% of sales. Tarkett, with EUR 3.3 billion of revenue in 2024, posted EUR 603.2 million of North American sales in its [nine-month 2025 report](https://www.tarkett-group.com/app/uploads/2025/10/22195617/press-release-tarkett-results-q3-2025.pdf) dated 22 October 2025, while its Sport division brought EUR 914.1 million. The AMF clearance of the EUR 17 per share squeeze-out on [5 June 2025](https://www.tarkett-group.com/app/uploads/2025/06/06182248/other-information-document-tarkett-06.06.2025.pdf) leaves Tarkett controlled by Tarkett Participation, which held 90.32% before the offer.

Gerflor reports [2025 turnover of EUR 1.548 billion](https://www.gerflorgroup.com/sites/web_corp/files/2026-07/CSR%20REPORT%202025%20GB.pdf), 20 factories and 61,006 tonnes of recycled material, with 23% average recycled content in its vinyl ranges and linoleum through the DLW brand. Forbo Flooring Systems, the Marmoleum linoleum maker, sold CHF 738.2 million in 2025, 3.6% less than a year earlier. Interface pairs nora rubber from Weinheim with luxury vinyl tile from a Korean contract maker, and its Americas business supplies 61% of sales, per its [10-K](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/715787/000071578726000006/tile-20251228.htm). AHF, through the Armstrong Flooring range, sells ASTM F1700 Class III tile with 2.5 mm gauge into schools and offices.

| Resilient flooring supplier | Disclosed figure | Resilient share (estimate) | Resilient revenue (estimate) | Global share |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Mohawk Industries | USD 10.8 billion net sales, 2025 | 19.5% | USD 2.11 billion | 5.2% |
| Tarkett | EUR 3.3 billion revenue, 2024 | 46.0% | USD 1.72 billion | 4.2% |
| Gerflor | EUR 1.548 billion turnover, 2025 | 88.0% | USD 1.54 billion | 3.8% |
| Forbo Flooring Systems | CHF 738.2 million net sales, 2025 | 64.0% | USD 571.7 million | 1.4% |

## How much do buyers pay per square metre of resilient flooring, from VCT to rubber?

Resilient flooring averages USD 12.04 per square metre at the manufacturer in 2025, but realised prices span eightfold: about USD 4.70 for vinyl composition tile against about USD 36.83 for rubber flooring. The mix shift toward plank lifts the average 1.3% a year.

Douglas Insights estimates realised manufacturer prices of USD 8.35 for sheet vinyl, USD 13.85 for flexible luxury vinyl tile and USD 14.60 for rigid core vinyl plank per square metre. Linoleum realises about USD 22.40. Installed prices run higher once adhesive, welding rod and labour are added. The average reaches USD 12.20 in 2026 and USD 13.70 by 2035. Tarkett's nine-month selling prices, 0.1% lower in its [22 October 2025 report](https://www.tarkett-group.com/app/uploads/2025/10/22195617/press-release-tarkett-results-q3-2025.pdf) on EUR 2.57 billion of sales, show that list increases stick only with thicker wear layers or new designs.

## Which end uses, from hospital wards to rental kitchens, absorb resilient flooring?

Residential floors absorb about 47.3% of resilient flooring revenue in 2025, Douglas Insights calculates, against 34.6% for commercial floors and 18.1% for institutional floors such as hospitals and schools. Residential is mostly rigid core plank; institutional is mostly sheet vinyl and rubber.

Commercial buyers, offices, shops and hotels, favour flexible luxury vinyl tile in glue-down format because acoustic backings and replaceable tiles cut lifecycle cost. Institutional buyers specify welded sheet and rubber, which is why rubber flooring keeps its 8.2% revenue share on only 91.0 million square metres. Residential demand is the swing factor: one point less housing turnover takes roughly 0.5 points off resilient flooring volume.

## Does glue-down, click-lock or loose-lay installation decide resilient flooring choice?

Click-lock formats take about 41.6% of resilient flooring square metres in 2025 by Douglas Insights count, glue-down 49.8% and loose-lay 8.6%. The method matters because it sets labour cost, which often exceeds the material price on a refit, and it decides which product line wins each resilient flooring job.

Glue-down remains standard for sheet vinyl, linoleum and commercial tile because rolling loads and welded seams need a bonded floor. Click-lock is the rigid core advantage: no adhesive, no cure time and installation over existing floors. Loose-lay tile, with a heavy backing and friction grip, serves raised access floors and short leases where resilient flooring must lift out cleanly.

## Which standards, from ASTM F1700 to ASTM F3261, govern resilient flooring?

Two ASTM specifications define most resilient flooring sold in North America: ASTM F1700 for solid vinyl tile and ASTM F3261 for modular flooring with a rigid polymeric core. Both set gauge, wear layer and indentation limits, and a 0.5 mm wear layer is the commercial norm.

ASTM F3261 covers tiles and planks that are printed, protected by a clear wear layer and built on a rigid polymeric core, the class that includes SPC planks. In Europe the policy debate is about chemistry. ECHA's 2023 investigation flagged ortho-phthalates and organotin stabilisers, and a restriction would hit flexible PVC more than rigid PVC. Low-emission and phthalate-free claims therefore carry tender points in schools and clinics, a gain for linoleum and rubber flooring.

## Is recycled PVC content changing resilient flooring economics?

Recycled content now reaches 23% on average across Gerflor's vinyl ranges, built on 61,006 tonnes recycled in 2025, and Douglas Insights reckons take-back adds about 0.2 points to resilient flooring margins at that scale. Recycled backing cuts virgin resin use without changing the wear layer.

The limit is legacy chemistry: old floors can contain plasticizers now under review, so recyclers sort post-consumer vinyl before reuse. Factory offcuts are easier, and most recycled resilient flooring content today comes from them. Rigid core plank, with its mineral-filled core, accepts more recycled PVC than flexible tile.

## What would move resilient flooring to a different 2035 total?

The base case lands resilient flooring at USD 61.91 billion in 2035 on 2.9% volume and 1.3% price growth. A slower case of 1.7% volume and 0.9% price yields USD 52.92 billion; a faster case of 3.8% and 1.8% yields USD 70.95 billion.

Adding one point to annual square-metre growth lifts end-of-forecast resilient flooring revenue by USD 6.29 billion, so housing is the variable to watch. The slower case assumes the soft demand in Tarkett's [22 October 2025](https://www.tarkett-group.com/app/uploads/2025/10/22195617/press-release-tarkett-results-q3-2025.pdf) report persists and a European phthalate restriction arrives before 2030; the faster case gains if Tarkett Participation, owner of 90.32% of Tarkett before the AMF cleared its squeeze-out on 5 June 2025, uses private ownership to add plank capacity. The faster case needs United States housing turnover to recover and rigid core plank to keep displacing carpet. Published forecasts run from about 5.6% to 7.2% a year. Our 4.24% sits below that published range for a method reason: we model volume and price separately and hold price growth at 1.3%, in line with Tarkett's flat realised prices.

## Douglas Exclusive: the resilient flooring revenue ledger

The resilient flooring revenue ledger is a Douglas Insights model built from 5 company filings and 12 disclosed figures: revenues, segment splits and national flooring totals published by Mohawk, Tarkett, Gerflor, Forbo and Interface. It converts each disclosed figure into resilient flooring revenue using our own product-share assumptions.

The ledger applies resilient shares of 19.5% to Mohawk, 46.0% to Tarkett, 88.0% to Gerflor and 64.0% to Forbo Flooring Systems, at USD 1.13 per euro and USD 1.21 per Swiss franc. That yields USD 2.11 billion, USD 1.72 billion, USD 1.54 billion and USD 571.7 million. The four named suppliers sum to USD 5.93 billion, or 14.6% of the USD 40.88 billion total.

The finding is that more than 85% of resilient flooring revenue sits with suppliers outside the four largest disclosed names, chiefly Asian plank exporters and regional sheet makers. That fragmentation explains why prices rose only 1.3% in our base case despite duty and resin costs: no supplier sets the price.

## How the model counts resilient flooring square metres, and where are the receipts?

The resilient flooring model multiplies 3.395 billion square metres by USD 12.04 to reach USD 40.88 billion, built across 6 product lines, 5 regions and 3 end uses. Volume comes from segment value divided by segment price, and the six volumes sum to the global total exactly.

Douglas Insights tallies 5 regional rows, 12 sourced inputs in the ledger and 30 product-by-region cells. Cross-check one: the North America row implies United States sales of USD 10.92 billion, 2.1% above the 2024 national figure of USD 10.69 billion, matching one year of base growth. Cross-check two: segment 2035 values sum to USD 61.83 billion, within 0.1% of the headline.
