A lithium-thickened silicone grease such as Molykote 44 Light is rated from -40°C to 204°C, a 244-degree service window that most petroleum greases cannot hold, and that span is why engineers specify silicone wherever rubber seals, plastics and hot bearings meet. Silicone-based lubricants are greases, fluids, aerosol sprays and gels built on polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and related siloxane polymers instead of mineral, polyalphaolefin (PAO) or ester base oils. The Silicone-Based Lubricant market covers these products sold to original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), maintenance buyers, food plants, device makers and households, and buyers also search for it as the silicon based lubricant market. Douglas Insights sizes it at USD 1.67 billion in 2025, the arithmetic being 88,400 tonnes × USD 18.90 per kg, and models USD 2.70 billion by 2035, a 4.93% annual revenue rate made of 3.42% tonnage growth and 1.46% price drift. Feedstock in Europe is tightening: [Dow's filing of 7 July 2025](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1751788/000175178825000139/dow-20250630.htm) schedules its basic siloxanes plant in Barry, U.K. for shutdown in mid-2026. ## Why are EV battery packs and H1 food lines lifting silicone lubricant demand?

Five end-use pulls add 3.42 points a year to silicone lubricant tonnage through 2035. Electric vehicle (EV) and automotive parts lead at 1.18 points, while electronics, industrial upkeep, healthcare and food processing supply the rest, taking volume from 88,400 tonnes in 2025 to about 123,700 tonnes.

### Electrified vehicles and electronics

Automotive and EV uses contribute 1.18 points of the 3.42-point volume leg. Silicone greases sit on connector seals, sunroof tracks, door dampers and battery-pack gaskets, where a lubricant must not swell EPDM or silicone rubber and must stay soft at -40°C. Douglas Insights counts automotive and EV demand at 21,746 tonnes in 2025, rising 4.71% a year to 34,456 tonnes by 2035. Each high-voltage connector is greased once on the line. Volume follows vehicle builds, not mileage. Over the decade automotive and EV uses add 12,710 tonnes, the largest gain of any silicone lubricant end use.

Electrical and electronics demand adds 0.69 points. Dielectric silicone compounds protect switchgear contacts, outdoor connectors and sensor housings because PDMS keeps its insulating behaviour across the same -40°C to 204°C band that suits brake and door hardware. This silicone lubricant niche grows from 14,940 tonnes to 22,157 tonnes, a 4.02% yearly pace. Switchgear and connector compounds are bought by the kilogram tube rather than the 200-litre drum, so this tonnage carries grease-level pricing.

### Food plants, clinics and workshops

Food processing adds 0.36 points. Under [21 CFR 178.3570](https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-21/chapter-I/subchapter-B/part-178/subpart-D/section-178.3570), dimethylpolysiloxane with a viscosity above 300 centistokes is allowed in lubricants with incidental food contact at no more than 1 part per million in food, against 10 parts per million for mineral oil. That tighter cap still leaves silicone as the default for oven conveyors, valve seals and filler heads, and food-processing tonnage climbs 3.66% a year from 8,575 tonnes.

Healthcare and personal care adds 0.37 points from syringe barrels, catheter surfaces and personal lubricant gels, where silicone is chosen because it does not attack latex or skin; that tonnage climbs from 7,337 to 11,264 tonnes by 2035. Industrial machinery and consumer DIY maintenance add the last 0.82 points. WD-40 Company's Specialist line, which includes a silicone spray rated from -100°F to 500°F, sold USD 81.96 million in the fiscal year ended 31 August 2025, up 11%, inside total company sales of USD 620.0 million, according to its [results filed with the SEC on 22 October 2025](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/105132/000010513225000061/wdfc-20251022xexx991.htm).

## Which headwinds slow silicone lubricant tonnage in cyclosiloxane-sensitive grades?

Three headwinds hold silicone lubricant volume back by 0.81 points a year, already netted out of the 3.42% base leg. Without them the 2035 value would reach USD 2.92 billion instead of USD 2.70 billion, a gap of about USD 219 million that regulation, substitution and European supply each explain in part.

Cyclosiloxane rules remove 0.34 points. [Commission Regulation (EU) 2024/1328](https://eur-lex.europa.eu/eli/reg/2024/1328/oj/eng), adopted on 16 May 2024 and in force from 6 June 2024, bars D4, D5 and D6 at 0.1% by weight or more in mixtures placed on the EU market after 6 June 2026, with derogations that push some uses later. Low-viscosity silicone sprays and some personal gels carry residual cyclics, so formulators are re-specifying fluids, and Douglas Insights trims 0.34 points from silicone lubricant growth for the qualification pause.

Substitution removes 0.27 points. In general bearing and chain service a PAO or lithium-complex grease sells well below the USD 27.40 per kg that a silicone grease realises, so maintenance buyers pick silicone only where temperature, rubber compatibility or dielectric needs force the choice. Roughly 0.27 points of volume growth leak to cheaper chemistries every year.

European supply removes 0.20 points. [Wacker's silicones division sold EUR 2.73 billion in 2025](https://reports.wacker.com/2025/annual-report/management-report/segments/silicones.html), 2.6% below the EUR 2.81 billion of 2024, citing weak automotive, construction and textile demand plus underused capacity, while Dow is closing its Barry siloxanes unit in 2026. Fewer European monomer lines mean longer lead times for regional silicone lubricant blenders.

## Which silicone lubricant format makes the money: grease, fluid, spray or gel?

Silicone greases and compounds lead with 34.6% of 2025 value, or USD 578.1 million, because a kilogram of grease earns USD 27.40 against USD 8.37 for bulk fluid. Personal and medical lubricants grow fastest, at 5.96% a year, on syringe, catheter and intimate-care demand.

| Segment | Share of 2025 value | 2025 value | Growth 2026-2035 | 2035 value | 2025 tonnes |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Silicone greases and compounds | 34.6% | USD 578.1 million | 5.12% | USD 952.5 million | 21,099 |
| Silicone oils and fluids | 23.8% | USD 397.7 million | 4.31% | USD 606.5 million | 47,514 |
| Aerosol silicone sprays | 17.3% | USD 289.0 million | 4.58% | USD 452.3 million | 8,601 |
| Personal and medical lubricants | 15.1% | USD 252.3 million | 5.96% | USD 450.1 million | 4,136 |
| Food-grade H1 lubricants | 9.2% | USD 153.7 million | 4.47% | USD 238.0 million | 7,050 |

Silicone greases and compounds earn USD 578.1 million on 21,099 tonnes and reach USD 952.5 million by 2035 at 5.12% a year, because dielectric, valve and EV gasket grades carry thickeners and fillers that lift realised price. Silicone oils and fluids hold 23.8%, or USD 397.7 million, on the largest tonnage, 47,514 tonnes, but their low unit price keeps value growth at 4.31%. Aerosol silicone sprays take 17.3% and USD 289.0 million, since maintenance crews and households buy them by the can; they grow 4.58% to USD 452.3 million. Personal and medical lubricants are only 4,136 tonnes yet worth USD 252.3 million, a 15.1% share that rests on USD 61.00 per kg pricing. Food-grade H1 lubricants, the incidental-contact grades, hold 9.2% and USD 153.7 million, rising 4.47% a year as plants consolidate onto one registered silicone grease.

The fastest silicone lubricant segment is personal and medical, at 5.96%. Prefilled syringes and catheter coatings need a tightly specified silicone film, and that volume compounds on a high price base, lifting the segment to USD 450.1 million in 2035.

## Where do Asia Pacific compounders and North American MRO buyers rank in silicone lubricant spend?

Asia Pacific leads with USD 730.1 million, 43.7% of 2025 silicone lubricant value, and grows fastest at 5.71% a year because most EV packs, connectors and consumer electronics are assembled there. North America follows with USD 416.0 million, and Europe holds USD 357.6 million.

| Region | 2025 value | Share | Growth 2026-2035 | 2035 value |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Asia Pacific | USD 730.1 million | 43.7% | 5.71% | USD 1.27 billion |
| North America | USD 416.0 million | 24.9% | 4.31% | USD 634.4 million |
| Europe | USD 357.6 million | 21.4% | 3.79% | USD 518.7 million |
| Latin America | USD 96.9 million | 5.8% | 5.17% | USD 160.4 million |
| Middle East and Africa | USD 70.2 million | 4.2% | 5.31% | USD 117.8 million |

Asia Pacific reaches USD 1.27 billion by 2035 as Chinese, Japanese and Korean siloxane capacity sits next to the assembly lines that consume silicone lubricant. North America grows 4.31% to USD 634.4 million, carried by maintenance, repair and operations (MRO) buying, aerosol retail and medical device output. Europe grows slowest at 3.79%, ending at USD 518.7 million, because the cyclosiloxane restriction and monomer closures weigh on its blenders. Latin America adds USD 96.9 million today and USD 160.4 million in 2035 at 5.17%, led by Brazilian and Mexican auto plants. The wildcard is the Middle East and Africa: USD 70.2 million now, growing 5.31% a year as Gulf food processors and desalination valve fleets switch to H1 silicone grease.

## Which companies, from siloxane producers to aerosol brands, control silicone lubricant supply?

The top three suppliers hold about 38.4% of 2025 silicone lubricant value by Douglas Insights estimate: Dow at 15.2%, DuPont through Molykote at 12.1% and Wacker at 11.1%. Their edge is captive siloxane or a specified brand; Shin-Etsu, Momentive, the Bluestar-owned silicones arm and WD-40 Company follow.

| Company | Position built on | Douglas Insights share estimate |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Dow | Basic siloxane monomer and silicone fluids | 15.2% |
| DuPont (Molykote) | Specified silicone greases and compounds | 12.1% |
| Wacker | Integrated silicones division | 11.1% |
| Shin-Etsu | Functional silicone fluids and greases | 8.7% |
| Momentive | Alkyl, aryl and PDMS fluids, antifoams | 7.4% |
| Bluestar silicones (ex-Elkem) | Upstream siloxane and fluids | 5.6% |
| WD-40 Company | Specialist silicone aerosol retail reach | 1.9% |

Dow anchors the silicone lubricant chain through siloxane monomer, but [its 7 July 2025 restructuring disclosure](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1751788/000175178825000139/dow-20250630.htm) lists the Barry basic siloxanes plant for mid-2026 shutdown inside charges of USD 630 million to USD 790 million and about 800 affected roles. Dow keeps its 15.2% share by our estimate because its silicone fluids are made elsewhere too.

DuPont's Molykote brand carries specified silicone greases; the 44 Light grade uses an 84-centistoke base oil at 40°C with a lithium thickener and a -40°C to 204°C rating, which keeps it on aerospace and appliance drawings. Momentive sells alkyl and aryl silicone fluids, PDMS lubricants and SAG and Silbreak antifoams for lube oils and greases. Shin-Etsu runs silicones inside a functional materials division that booked ¥326 billion of sales in nine months, up 5%, giving it scale in Asian silicone lubricant supply.

Ownership changed at the fourth supplier. [Elkem announced on 13 February 2026](https://www.elkem.com/transaction) that it would transfer the majority of its silicones division to Bluestar, settled by redeeming Bluestar's 338,338,536 Elkem shares, or 52.9%, and completed the deal on 30 April 2026. Wacker, the third leader, reported silicones EBITDA of EUR 335.7 million for 2025 at a 12.3% margin, and WD-40 Company reaches retail shelves with its 11-ounce silicone spray.

## How much do buyers pay per kilogram for silicone grease, fluid and aerosol?

Silicone lubricant realises USD 18.90 per kg on average in 2025, a blend of USD 8.37 bulk fluid and USD 61.00 medical and personal gel. Douglas Insights expects that average to rise 1.46% a year to about USD 21.85 per kg by 2035, as mix shifts toward compounds and gels.

| Format | Modelled realised band, USD per kg | 2025 average, USD per kg |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Silicone oils and fluids | 6.10 to 11.40 | 8.37 |
| Food-grade H1 lubricants | 16.20 to 31.50 | 21.80 |
| Silicone greases and compounds | 18.50 to 44.00 | 27.40 |
| Aerosol silicone sprays (contents) | 24.80 to 46.00 | 33.60 |
| Personal and medical lubricants | 38.00 to 95.00 | 61.00 |

Prices on the silicone lubricant ladder are set by the siloxane cost underneath and the qualification on top. Bulk fluid tracks monomer, and Wacker's chief executive described "high levels of excess capacity in many areas" in March 2026, which caps fluid prices near USD 8.37. Elkem said its silicones division posted fourth-quarter 2025 EBITDA of NOK 399 million on higher sales prices and cost cuts. Specified grease grades sit 3.3 times above fluid because a drawing number is hard to replace. The 1.46% price leg is a mix effect more than list-price inflation.

## Which channels, OEM contracts or retail shelves, move silicone lubricant to buyers?

Direct OEM supply carries 46.3% of 2025 silicone lubricant value, about USD 773.6 million, because automakers, appliance makers and device firms buy specified grades on annual contracts. Industrial distributors take 35.2% and retail and e-commerce 18.5%, mostly aerosol cans and personal gels.

Direct OEM supply favours the big three, whose application engineers write the grease onto the drawing. Industrial distributors, worth about USD 588.1 million, serve MRO crews and food plants buying H1 silicone lubricant in small lots. Retail and e-commerce, about USD 309.1 million, is where WD-40 Company and private labels compete; its value growth trails the market because can prices are visible and compared. Douglas Insights projects the OEM channel at 48.9% of value by 2035 as EV content rises.

## How does a polydimethylsiloxane backbone let a silicone lubricant outlast mineral grease?

A silicone lubricant outlasts mineral grease because its silicon-oxygen backbone keeps viscosity steadier across temperature, so one grade spans -40°C to 204°C or, in a spray, -100°F to 500°F. PDMS also does not swell most rubbers or attack plastics, which settles material compatibility in mixed assemblies.

Two physical traits drive the silicone lubricant specification. First, thermal breadth: the 244-degree Celsius window of Molykote 44 Light covers both a winter door seal and an oven conveyor. Second, purity: food law allows dimethylpolysiloxane above 300 centistokes at 1 part per million in food. The weak point is load. Silicone films carry less pressure than PAO or mineral oils, which is why only 34.6% of value sits in greases and compounds rather than gear and bearing oils.

## Which REACH, FDA and NSF rules shape silicone lubricant formulations?

Three rulebooks shape silicone lubricant formulations in 2026. They are the EU cyclosiloxane limit of 0.1% by weight from 6 June 2026 under [Regulation (EU) 2024/1328](https://eur-lex.europa.eu/eli/reg/2024/1328/oj/eng), the US Food and Drug Administration ([FDA](https://www.fda.gov/)) food-contact cap of 1 part per million, and NSF registration for H1 and nonfood compounds.

The Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) entry covers D4, D5 and D6 on their own, in other substances and in mixtures, and bans them as dry-cleaning solvents after 6 June 2026. Silicone lubricant makers that once relied on cyclic-rich low-viscosity fluids now buy stripped grades, a change that touches roughly 17.3% of value held by aerosol silicone sprays. Readers tracking the feedstock itself can see our [Cyclopentasiloxane Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/cyclopentasiloxane-market/) report.

In the United States, 21 CFR 178.3570 lists dimethylpolysiloxane for lubricants with incidental food contact, provided viscosity exceeds 300 centistokes. NSF registration then sorts silicone lubricant into H1 food-grade and nonfood categories; WD-40's silicone spray, for example, is certified under the NSF Nonfood Compounds Program and is 50-state volatile organic compound (VOC) compliant.

## What does the Barry siloxane shutdown mean for European silicone lubricant blenders?

Europe's USD 357.6 million silicone lubricant market loses one basic siloxane source in mid-2026 when Dow closes Barry, and Douglas Insights models European growth at 3.79%, the slowest region, partly for that reason. Blenders will import more monomer and fluid.

The Barry closure arrives in the same month that the cyclosiloxane restriction applies, so European silicone lubricant buyers face a new specification and a shorter supplier list at once. Wacker's capital spending in silicones fell 24.2% to EUR 201.9 million in 2025 while it commissioned specialty plants in Japan and South Korea, a sign that new capacity is moving east. Europe still reaches USD 518.7 million by 2035, but its share slips from 21.4% to 19.2%. Formulators comparing additive chemistries can read our [Surfactant Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/surfactant-market/) study.

## What if EV build rates or cyclosiloxane rules move the silicone lubricant forecast for 2035?

The silicone lubricant forecast spans USD 2.30 billion to USD 3.12 billion for 2035 around a base of USD 2.70 billion. The slower case runs 2.31% volume and 0.92% price; the faster case runs 4.47% volume and 1.88% price, mostly on EV connector and medical demand.

| Case | Volume leg | Price leg | 2035 value |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Slower | 2.31% | 0.92% | USD 2.30 billion |
| Base case | 3.42% | 1.46% | USD 2.70 billion |
| Faster | 4.47% | 1.88% | USD 3.12 billion |

The slower case assumes EU derogations expire without substitute fluids qualified and that the Barry shutdown in 2026, disclosed by Dow on 7 July 2025, lengthens European lead times for two years. The faster case assumes EV output and prefilled-syringe volumes beat plan. One added point of yearly silicone lubricant tonnage growth lifts the 2035 value by about USD 273 million. Published forecasts run from about 4.1% to 6.2% a year; our 4.93% sits in the lower half because we net out substitution and the European supply squeeze.

## Douglas Exclusive: the silicone lubricant end-use tonnage ledger

The ledger is a Douglas Insights model built from 14 sourced inputs, listed in the sources, that splits the 88,400 tonnes of 2025 silicone lubricant demand across six end uses and carries each to 2035. It is our estimate, not an official register.

| End use | 2025 tonnes | Share of tonnes | Volume growth | 2035 tonnes | Tonnes added |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Automotive and EV | 21,746 | 24.6% | 4.71% | 34,456 | 12,710 |
| Industrial machinery | 20,155 | 22.8% | 2.19% | 25,031 | 4,875 |
| Electrical and electronics | 14,940 | 16.9% | 4.02% | 22,157 | 7,217 |
| Food processing | 8,575 | 9.7% | 3.66% | 12,284 | 3,709 |
| Healthcare and personal care | 7,337 | 8.3% | 4.38% | 11,264 | 3,927 |
| Consumer DIY maintenance | 15,647 | 17.7% | 1.71% | 18,545 | 2,898 |

The finding is concentration of growth. Automotive and EV uses add 12,710 of the 35,336 new tonnes, or 36.0%, from a 24.6% starting share. Consumer DIY maintenance is the laggard at 1.71% a year. A silicone lubricant supplier without an EV-qualified grease misses more than a third of the decade's tonnage. The ledger also sizes the 2035 pool at 123,736 tonnes, which at USD 21.85 per kg returns the USD 2.70 billion base case.

## How we counted 88,400 tonnes of silicone lubricant and priced each kilogram?

Douglas Insights builds the silicone lubricant figure bottom-up: 88,400 tonnes times USD 18,900 per tonne equals USD 1.67 billion in 2025. Five product segments, five regions, six end uses and three channels each reconcile to that total within 0.2 points of rounding.

Inputs: 14 sourced records, made of seven supplier disclosures, three regulatory texts, three product pages and one set of five published growth rates. Segment tonnes come from value divided by modelled price: 21,099 tonnes of grease at USD 27.40, 47,514 tonnes of fluid at USD 8.37, 8,601 tonnes of spray at USD 33.60, 4,136 tonnes of personal and medical gel at USD 61.00 and 7,050 tonnes of H1 grease at USD 21.80. Segment 2035 values sum to USD 2.70 billion, within 0.15% of the USD 2.70 billion total.

Cross-checks: one published estimate puts 2026 silicone lubricant value at USD 1.42 billion, 18.7% under our USD 1.75 billion, while a grease-only estimate of USD 2.40 billion for 2024 sits 43.6% above our whole market, so our figure lands between them. Published growth rates of 4.12% to 6.22% bracket our 4.93%. 43.7% of 2025 value, or USD 730.1 million, growing 5.71% a year as EV and electronics assembly concentrates there.

### Does the EU D4, D5 and D6 restriction affect silicone sprays and greases?

0.1% by weight is the cap on D4, D5 and D6 in mixtures placed on the EU market after 6 June 2026 under Regulation (EU) 2024/1328, so cyclic-rich fluids must be re-specified.

### Who supplies the largest share of silicone lubricants?

38.4% of 2025 value sits with the top three by Douglas Insights estimate: Dow at 15.2%, DuPont through Molykote at 12.1% and Wacker at 11.1%.

### How sensitive is the 2035 silicone lubricant figure to EV and medical demand?

USD 273 million per added point of yearly tonnage growth; the 2035 range runs from USD 2.30 billion to USD 3.12 billion.
