## Key takeaways

- USD 46.26 billion in 2025 rises to USD 64.97 billion by 2035, a 3.46% revenue CAGR.
- OLED was 44.0% of the 2.093 billion panels shipped in 2025 but 82.4% of value.
- Flexible OLED holds 66.7% of value; foldable OLED grows fastest at 12.85% a year.
- South Korea earns 48.4% of 2025 value, but China grows 4.27% a year and leads by 2035.
- Samsung Display holds about 36.9% of value and the top three about 68.1%, by Douglas Insights estimate.

About 2.09 billion smartphone panels left the fabs in 2025 to fill roughly 1.25 billion new handsets and the repair channel, yet organic light-emitting diode (OLED) panels made up only 920 million of them, about 44.0%, against 1.17 billion liquid crystal display (LCD) panels. The smartphone display market covers the finished panels, rigid OLED, flexible OLED, foldable OLED, low-temperature polysilicon (LTPS) LCD and amorphous silicon (a-Si) LCD, that panel makers sell to handset makers and to the repair channel. Douglas Insights estimates the market at USD 46.26 billion in 2025, the product of 2.093 billion panels at an average USD 22.10 each, rising to USD 64.97 billion by 2035, a revenue compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 3.46% over 2026 to 2035.

The newest signal of where value is heading came on 9 September 2026, when Apple unveiled iPhone Duo, a folding phone with a 7.6-inch inner display and a 5.4-inch outer display, priced from USD 1,999 ([Apple Newsroom](https://www.apple.com/newsroom/2026/09/apple-unveils-iphone-duo/)). Two OLED panels in one handset is the pattern this forecast follows. The figures belong to our [information technology and semiconductors](https://www.douglasinsights.com/industry/ict-semiconductors/) research and are built with the steps in our [research methodology](https://www.douglasinsights.com/research-methodology/).

## Which panels does the smartphone display market include, and which stay outside it?

The smartphone display market includes 2.093 billion finished panels shipped in 2025, sold by panel makers to handset brands, their contract assemblers and the repair channel. Value is counted at the ex-fab panel price, with touch layers when the panel maker bonds them, and excludes handset assembly margins and separately sold cover glass.

Five technologies make up the scope. Flexible OLED panels sit on plastic substrates with LTPS or low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) backplanes and go into flagship and upper mid-range phones. Foldable OLED covers the bendable inner panel plus its outer cover screen, counted as one set per phone. Rigid OLED sits on glass, and Samsung Electronics is its main buyer. LTPS LCD and a-Si LCD remain the panels of entry and low-cost handsets.

Tablet, watch and laptop panels are excluded, as are display driver chips sold on their own; those belong with the [Mobile Semiconductors Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/mobile-semiconductors-market/). Counting is by panel, not by phone. The 2.09 billion panels exceed the 1.25 billion handsets shipped in 2025 by about 840 million because service spares, refurbishment and the second screen of folding phones add volume.

## Which panel makers supply smartphone displays, and how concentrated is the competition?

Samsung Display leads with about 36.9% of 2025 smartphone display value on our estimate, and the top three, Samsung Display, BOE and LG Display, hold about 68.1%. Their lead rests on flexible OLED capacity and long qualification records with Apple and Samsung, while Chinese rivals win on volume.

### Korean incumbents

Samsung Display shipped 41.5% of the world's active-matrix OLED (AMOLED) smartphone panels in 2025, down from 43.2% a year earlier, and its parent reported KRW 9.5 trillion of display revenue and KRW 2.0 trillion of operating profit for the fourth quarter on 29 January 2026 ([Samsung Electronics results](https://news.samsung.com/be/samsung-electronics-announces-fourth-quarter-and-fy-2025-results)). Its rigid lines serve mainly Samsung Electronics; its flexible LTPO panels go to Apple and Samsung flagships.

LG Display reported KRW 25.8 trillion of 2025 revenue on 28 January 2026, with mobile and other devices at 36% of sales and OLED at a record 61% ([LG Display results](https://www.lgcorp.com/media/release/29813)). Douglas Insights puts its share of smartphone display value near 11.5%, almost all of it flexible OLED for iPhone.

### Chinese challengers

BOE shipped about 630 million smartphone panels in 2025, more than any rival by count, and about 150 million were AMOLED, up 8% on 2024, for 16.3% of AMOLED units. It also holds more than 30% of a-Si LCD supply, which is why its value share, about 19.7% on our estimate, trails its unit lead. Visionox held 11.1% of AMOLED units. Tianma took 11.6% in the fourth quarter after a 20.0% year-on-year rise. TCL CSOT was projected at about 223 million smartphone panels in 2025, up from about 215 million, and HKC competes in LCD.

| Panel maker | Base of position | 2025 smartphone display value share (Douglas Insights estimate) |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Samsung Display | Flexible LTPO and rigid OLED, 41.5% of AMOLED units | 36.9% |
| BOE | About 630 million panels, a-Si LCD leader, 150 million AMOLED | 19.7% |
| LG Display | Flexible OLED for iPhone, OLED 61% of company sales | 11.5% |
| TCL CSOT | About 223 million panels, LTPS LCD and flexible OLED | 7.1% |
| Visionox | 11.1% of AMOLED units | 6.6% |
| Tianma | LTPS LCD and AMOLED, 11.6% of fourth-quarter AMOLED units | 6.1% |
| HKC and other makers | a-Si LCD and smaller OLED fabs in China, Japan and Taiwan | 12.1% |

## What price bands do handset brands pay for a smartphone display panel in 2025?

USD 22.10 is the blended 2025 price of a smartphone display panel, by our estimate. The bands run from about USD 5.17 for an a-Si LCD to USD 151.85 for a foldable OLED set, a 29-fold spread set by substrate, backplane and yield.

Old cost data still frame the bands. Production costs reported for late 2018 put a 5.5-inch rigid OLED near USD 23 and a 6.46-inch flexible panel around USD 90. Chinese AMOLED output then reached 364 million panels in 2024, up 120 million in a year, and prices fell. Our 2025 flexible average of USD 47.60 sits at roughly half that 2018 flexible cost; rigid OLED averages USD 16.89.

LTPS LCD averages USD 10.80 and a-Si LCD USD 5.17. A foldable set, at USD 151.85, costs a handset maker about 6.9 times the blended smartphone display price. Short version: glass is cheap, plastic is not.

The 2.86% price leg is mix, not inflation. Like-for-like panel prices keep falling, but every year more panels move from a USD 5 to USD 11 LCD to a USD 17 to USD 48 OLED, and foldables grow fastest. By 2035 the blended smartphone display price reaches about USD 29.30.

## Which smartphone display technology makes the money: flexible OLED, rigid OLED or LCD?

Flexible OLED makes the money: 66.7% of 2025 smartphone display value, USD 30.85 billion, from 648.2 million panels. Flagship and upper mid-range phones need thin, bendable, high-refresh screens, and flexible OLED is the only technology that supplies all three at volume.

| Technology | Share of 2025 value | 2025 value | Growth 2026 to 2035 | 2035 value |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Flexible OLED | 66.7% | USD 30.85 billion | 4.31% | USD 47.05 billion |
| Foldable OLED | 6.5% | USD 3.01 billion | 12.85% | USD 10.07 billion |
| Rigid OLED | 9.2% | USD 4.26 billion | -7.85% | USD 1.88 billion |
| LTPS LCD | 8.6% | USD 3.98 billion | -5.30% | USD 2.31 billion |
| a-Si LCD | 9.0% | USD 4.16 billion | -1.95% | USD 3.42 billion |

Flexible OLED grows 4.31% a year to USD 47.05 billion, because about 668 million phones carried a flexible AMOLED panel in 2025 and the count keeps rising. Foldable OLED is the fastest line, 12.85% a year from USD 3.01 billion to USD 10.07 billion: 19.8 million foldables shipped in 2025, about 1.6% of handsets, and Apple's entry widens the buyer base. Rigid OLED, USD 4.26 billion, shrinks 7.85% a year as its glass lines are phased out. LTPS LCD, USD 3.98 billion, falls 5.30% a year as mid-range demand moves to OLED. The a-Si LCD line, USD 4.16 billion, declines only 1.95% a year because its cost edge holds in replacement and emerging-market phones.

## Which panel-making country earns most from smartphone displays: South Korea or China?

South Korea earns most, about USD 22.37 billion or 48.4% of 2025 smartphone display value, because Samsung Display and LG Display own the premium flexible OLED business. China follows at USD 20.75 billion and grows faster, 4.27% a year, passing South Korea before 2035.

Regions here are panel-making countries, not handset markets. South Korea grows 3.16% a year to USD 30.54 billion. China, the fastest-growing country, reaches USD 31.52 billion by 2035: Chinese suppliers passed half of AMOLED smartphone units for the first time in 2025 at 50.6%, and Chinese makers already shipped about 69.8% of all smartphone panels in 2024. Japan, at USD 1.95 billion, shrinks 1.46% a year as its LTPS LCD base ages. Taiwan, at USD 892.7 million, eases 0.88% a year. Other countries are the wildcard at USD 291.5 million; their 3.61% growth assumes no large new smartphone display fab outside East Asia before 2035. One new line would change that row.

## What propels smartphone display revenue while panel counts barely move?

Smartphone display revenue grows 3.46% a year while panel volume adds only 0.58% a year, because buyers keep trading up from LCD to OLED and from bar phones to foldables. Mix supplies the 2.86-point price leg; three volume drivers supply the 0.58 points.

Second screens on folding phones add 0.21 points of volume growth. Some 19.8 million foldables shipped in 2025, each with an inner and an outer panel. Apple's iPhone Duo, unveiled on 9 September 2026 with a 7.6-inch inner and 5.4-inch outer display at USD 1,999 ([Apple Newsroom](https://www.apple.com/newsroom/2026/09/apple-unveils-iphone-duo/)), brings the biggest single buyer of flexible OLED into the category; the handset view sits in the [Foldable Smartphone Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/foldable-smartphone-market/).

Repair and service spares add 0.17 points. EU rules in force since 20 June 2025 require handset makers to supply key spare parts within 5 to 10 working days and for at least 7 years after a model leaves the market ([European Commission](https://single-market-economy.ec.europa.eu/news/new-eu-rules-durable-energy-efficient-and-repairable-smartphones-and-tablets-start-applying-2025-06-20_en)), and a phone sold in the EU now carries a repairability score from A to E. Longer support windows lengthen the tail of service panel orders for each smartphone display design.

Entry handset volume adds 0.20 points. Handset shipments reached about 1.25 billion in 2025, up 1.5%, and are expected to dip 0.9% in 2026 on component shortages; Douglas Insights expects modest handset growth to resume after 2027, worth 0.20 points a year over the decade. Volume total: 0.21 plus 0.17 plus 0.20 equals 0.58 points.

Content per handset climbs faster than panel counts. A bar phone with one flexible panel carries about USD 47.60 of smartphone display content; a foldable carries USD 151.85, 3.2 times as much. If foldables reached 3% of 1.25 billion handsets, about 37.5 million sets, foldable display value would rise to about USD 5.69 billion at 2025 prices, almost double the USD 3.01 billion of 2025. That arithmetic explains why panel makers keep adding flexible capacity even though total panel shipments slipped 3.2% in 2025.

OLED substitution then delivers the 2.86-point price leg. AMOLED penetration of new phones rose from 57% in the first quarter of 2024 to 63% a year later, and AMOLED smartphone panels reached about 920 million in 2025, up 4.7%. Each LCD panel replaced by flexible OLED lifts smartphone display value from about USD 5 to USD 48. The two legs multiply to 3.46%.

## What headwinds keep smartphone display growth down at 3.46%?

Three headwinds remove about 1.10 points a year from smartphone display growth: falling like-for-like OLED prices, a 2026 handset dip and the shrinking of rigid OLED and LTPS LCD. The base case already nets them out; the slower scenario assumes they bite harder.

Price erosion comes first. Chinese suppliers took 50.6% of AMOLED units in 2025, and their added flexible capacity pushes like-for-like panel prices down every year. Douglas Insights models 0.48 points of annual price erosion against the mix gain.

Handset weakness removes 0.22 points. The expected 0.9% fall in 2026 handset shipments, blamed on component shortages and product cycle shifts, trims smartphone display volume averaged across the decade.

Legacy lines drag 0.40 points. Rigid OLED and LTPS LCD shrink from USD 8.23 billion combined in 2025 to USD 4.19 billion by 2035, and their fabs are rarely converted at full value. Sum: 0.48 plus 0.22 plus 0.40 equals 1.10 points.

## How do EU ecodesign rules and repairability labels change smartphone display supply?

Regulation (EU) 2023/1670, adopted on 16 June 2023, has applied since 20 June 2025. It sets 7-year spare-part availability with delivery in 5 to 10 working days for phones sold in the EU ([Official Journal](https://eur-lex.europa.eu/eli/reg/2023/1670/oj)). For smartphone display makers that means longer runs of service panels for each model.

The same rules ask for greater resistance to drops, scratches, dust and water, batteries that keep 80% of capacity after at least 800 cycles, and operating system updates for at least 5 years after the last unit is sold ([European Commission](https://single-market-economy.ec.europa.eu/news/new-eu-rules-durable-energy-efficient-and-repairable-smartphones-and-tablets-start-applying-2025-06-20_en)). Cover-window strength and panel stack design now face a legal floor in Europe, not only a brand target.

Our base case books the regulation inside the 0.17-point repair driver. No comparable display-specific rule applies in China or South Korea, the two countries that make 93.3% of smartphone display value, so the rule changes service volume more than technology choice.

## What if OLED reaches entry phones faster: smartphone display scenarios for 2035?

Smartphone display revenue lands between USD 54.14 billion and USD 75.71 billion in 2035, with USD 64.97 billion as the central case at 3.46% a year. The spread depends mostly on how fast OLED displaces a-Si LCD in entry phones and how far foldables travel.

| Case | Volume leg | Price leg | Revenue CAGR | 2035 value |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Slower | -0.60% | 2.20% | 1.59% | USD 54.14 billion |
| Base case | 0.58% | 2.86% | 3.46% | USD 64.97 billion |
| Faster | 1.40% | 3.60% | 5.05% | USD 75.71 billion |

The slower case keeps handset volume shrinking and lets Chinese capacity cut flexible OLED prices faster. The faster case assumes foldables, lifted by iPhone Duo after its 9 September 2026 launch ([Apple Newsroom](https://www.apple.com/newsroom/2026/09/apple-unveils-iphone-duo/)), climb well above today's 1.6% of handsets and that rigid OLED gives way to flexible OLED in mid-range phones.

One extra point of annual panel volume growth adds about USD 6.76 billion to the 2035 smartphone display value. Published forecasts run from about 3.36% to 6.9% a year; our 3.46% sits near the low end because we count ex-fab panel prices and net out like-for-like price erosion.

## Douglas Exclusive: the Smartphone Display Panel Value Ledger

The Smartphone Display Panel Value Ledger is a Douglas Insights model, not an official register, built from 14 sourced inputs. Those inputs are panel and handset shipment counts, AMOLED unit splits, supplier shares, two company results releases, the Apple launch and the EU rule. It sets each smartphone display technology's share of panels against its share of value.

| Technology | Panels 2025 | Share of panels | Realised price | Share of value |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Flexible OLED | 648.2 million | 31.0% | USD 47.60 | 66.7% |
| Foldable OLED | 19.8 million sets | 0.9% | USD 151.85 | 6.5% |
| Rigid OLED | 252.0 million | 12.0% | USD 16.89 | 9.2% |
| LTPS LCD | 368.4 million | 17.6% | USD 10.80 | 8.6% |
| a-Si LCD | 804.6 million | 38.4% | USD 5.17 | 9.0% |

Douglas Insights counts 920.0 million OLED panels in 2025, 44.0% of the total, earning 82.4% of smartphone display value. LCD is the mirror image: 56.0% of panels, 17.6% of value. Foldables are the extreme case, 0.9% of panels and 6.5% of value, a value-to-volume ratio of about 7 to 1. The a-Si LCD row runs the other way, 38.4% of panels for 9.0% of value.

The finding: every point of panel share that a-Si LCD loses to flexible OLED moves about USD 0.20 billion of value at 2025 prices, so the market's growth depends more on which panels ship than on how many. Splits between LTPS and a-Si LCD are our estimates; the OLED total is sourced.

## How the model counts: do 2.093 billion smartphone display panels really make USD 46.26 billion?

2.093 billion panels multiplied by a blended USD 22.10 gives USD 46.26 billion for 2025, the smartphone display total used throughout this report. A sourced panel count, a sourced AMOLED total and three company disclosures anchor the build; prices per technology are our estimates.

Inputs: 14 sourced data points across 5 panel-making country rows and 7 named panel makers. Units: 648.2 million flexible OLED, 19.8 million foldable sets, 252.0 million rigid OLED, 368.4 million LTPS LCD and 804.6 million a-Si LCD, summing to 2.093 billion. Forecast: USD 46.26 billion times (1.0058 times 1.0286) to the tenth power gives USD 64.97 billion; 2035 volume is 2.22 billion panels at about USD 29.30.

Cross-check one: all-application AMOLED revenue was about USD 53 billion in 2025, and our smartphone OLED value of USD 38.11 billion is 71.9% of it, consistent with phones as the largest OLED use. Cross-check two: published 2025 smartphone display sizes of USD 52.86 billion and USD 55.68 billion run 14.3% and 20.4% above ours, a gap we attribute to module and cover glass content we exclude. Cross-check three: the 0.58% volume leg compares with a 3.2% panel decline in 2025, which we treat as a trough year.

## What should a handset sourcing team lock in for smartphone display supply before 2027?

Sourcing teams should secure flexible OLED from at least two makers, because one supplier ships 41.5% of AMOLED smartphone panels and foldable smartphone display demand grows 12.85% a year. Price falls of about 0.48 points a year favour shorter contracts on LCD and longer ones on foldables.

Three moves follow. Qualify a Chinese flexible OLED source alongside a Korean one, since Chinese makers already hold 50.6% of AMOLED units. Reserve foldable panel capacity early: Apple's arrival competes for the same lines. Plan 7 years of service panels for every EU model. Materials matter too; blue emitter efficiency, covered in the [OLED Blue Light Emitting Materials Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/oled-blue-light-emitting-materials-market/), sets OLED panel lifetime and power draw.
