Creative Technology, the company behind the Sound Blaster, sold USD 60.9 million in its year to 30 June 2026, down 10% from USD 67.4 million, its [results filed with the Singapore Exchange in August 2026](https://links.sgx.com/1.0.0/corporate-announcements/CML2I92FNNJPQ8T7/901865_EarningsReleaseH226.pdf) show, while Focusrite's Content Creation sales, led by its Scarlett audio interfaces, rose 2.0% to GBP 118.5 million in the twelve months to February 2026. The sound cards market covers the hardware that converts a computer's digital audio into analogue sound and back: USB audio interfaces for recording, external USB DACs and gaming sound cards, and internal PCIe sound cards. Douglas Insights sizes it at USD 1.50 billion in 2025, about 13.0 million units at an average USD 115 each, and at USD 2.11 billion in 2035, a 3.53% compound annual growth rate (CAGR). The study sits beside our [AV Receiver Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/av-receiver-market/), [Gaming Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/gaming-market/) and [Miniature Fan Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/miniature-fan-market/) reports; every figure follows the Douglas Insights [research methodology](https://www.douglasinsights.com/research-methodology/).

## Which sound card type earns the most: USB audio interfaces, external USB DACs or internal PCIe cards?

USB audio interfaces earn the most, 62.0% of 2025 sound card value or about USD 927 million, Douglas Insights estimates, and they also grow fastest, 4.2% a year to USD 1.40 billion by 2035.

| Product type | Share 2025 | Value 2025 | CAGR 2026-2035 | Value 2035 |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| USB audio interfaces | 62.0% | USD 927 million | 4.2% | USD 1.40 billion |
| External USB DACs and gaming sound cards | 26.0% | USD 389 million | 3.3% | USD 538 million |
| Internal PCIe sound cards | 12.0% | USD 179 million | -0.5% | USD 171 million |

USB audio interfaces lead because every home studio, podcaster and singer-songwriter needs microphone preamps, instrument inputs and low-latency drivers that a motherboard cannot provide. Focusrite says its Scarlett range "remains the most widely used audio interface platform globally", its [Annual Report and Accounts 2026](https://focusriteplc.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Focusrite-Annual-Report-and-Accounts-2026.pdf) states. Douglas Insights estimates that about 4.6 million audio interfaces were sold in 2025 at an average USD 202, and that the segment grows 4.2% a year to USD 1.40 billion.

External USB DACs and gaming sound cards, USD 389 million, are the largest unit group at about 6.5 million pieces, mostly small dongles and desktop boxes that feed headphones; they grow 3.3% a year to USD 538 million. Internal PCIe sound cards, USD 179 million and about 1.9 million units, shrink 0.5% a year because most desktop boards now carry capable on-board codecs, leaving the slot to enthusiasts and audiophiles. Type values for 2035 sum to USD 2.11 billion, 0.35% below the headline.

## Who buys sound cards: home studios, streamers, gamers or professional studios?

Home studios and musicians buy the most, 45.0% of 2025 value or about USD 673 million, Douglas Insights estimates. Streamers, podcasters and other creators grow fastest, 4.8% a year from USD 329 million to USD 526 million by 2035.

| End user | Share 2025 | Value 2025 | CAGR 2026-2035 | Value 2035 |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Home studios and musicians | 45.0% | USD 673 million | 3.6% | USD 958 million |
| Streamers, podcasters and creators | 22.0% | USD 329 million | 4.8% | USD 526 million |
| Gamers and audiophiles | 25.0% | USD 374 million | 2.6% | USD 483 million |
| Professional studios and broadcast | 8.0% | USD 120 million | 2.8% | USD 158 million |

Home studios lead because a laptop, a two-input interface and a microphone are now the standard kit for recording music. Focusrite's Scarlett registrations "closely mirrored those of the previous year" against an industry decline of about 1%, and its Content Creation sales rose 11.0% to GBP 123.0 million in the twelve months to August 2025, its [interim results of 4 November 2025](https://www.lse.co.uk/rns/interim-results-26vmruemqgxwwgr.html) show. Home studio value grows 3.6% a year to USD 958 million, a Douglas Insights estimate.

Streamers and creators, USD 329 million, grow 4.8% because live video and podcasting need two or more inputs and hardware mixing. Gamers and audiophiles, USD 374 million, grow 2.6% as headset buyers add USB DACs and a minority keep internal cards. Professional studios and broadcast, USD 120 million, grow 2.8% on Thunderbolt and network audio upgrades. End-user values for 2035 sum to USD 2.12 billion, 0.48% above the headline.

## What drives sound card demand: creators, home recording, the Windows 11 PC refresh or hi-res listening?

Sound card units rise 2.3% a year in our base case, from about 13.0 million in 2025 to about 16.3 million in 2035. Four drivers add 3.60 points of gross unit growth; three restraints remove 1.30 points.

### Streamers, podcasters and video creators: 1.20 points

Creators are the largest driver, worth 1.20 points. Corsair, whose Elgato brand sells streaming gear, grew its Gamer and Creator Peripherals segment 3% to USD 116.5 million in the third quarter of 2026 and launched the VOXARA USB microphone in the quarter, its [results of 5 November 2026](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/0001743759/000119312526449747/crsr-ex99_1.htm) show, and it raised its 2026 revenue guide to USD 1.456 billion to USD 1.486 billion. Douglas Insights estimates that about 1.3 million creator-focused interfaces and mixers were sold in 2025, growing about 4.5% a year.

### Home recording and interface refresh: 1.00 point

Home recording adds 1.00 point. Focusrite said "the refresh of our flagship Scarlett range in Focusrite is now complete" in its [4 November 2025 interim results](https://www.lse.co.uk/rns/interim-results-26vmruemqgxwwgr.html), and a refreshed range typically brings a replacement wave from owners of interfaces bought five to eight years earlier. Douglas Insights estimates that about 25 million audio interfaces are in use worldwide and that about 3.5 million are replaced each year, the rest of annual sales being first-time buyers.

### Windows 11 gaming PCs: 0.80 points

Gaming PCs add 0.80 points. Windows 11 ran on 72.51% of Steam machines in October 2026, up 1.17 points, while Windows 10 fell 2.5 points to 21.11%, [Windows Central reported on 3 November 2026](https://windowscentral.com/gaming/pc-gaming/steam-october-survey-windows-11-pc-gaming-hardware) from Valve's [Steam Hardware Survey](https://store.steampowered.com/hwsurvey), after Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on 14 October 2025, as its [end-of-support page](https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/end-of-support) states. Douglas Insights estimates that about 4% of new gaming desktops ship with or soon add a discrete or external sound card.

### Hi-res listening and premium headphones: 0.60 points

Hi-res listening adds the last 0.60 points. Creative announced the Sound Blaster AE-X flagship PCIe card on 29 May 2026, the [Vortez news archive](https://www.vortez.net/news_tags/sound_card.html) shows, built on an ESS ES9039Q2M DAC rated at 130 dB dynamic range with up to 350 mW into 32-ohm headphones, per [Guru3D's review](https://www.guru3d.com/review/creative-sound-blaster-aex-pcie-sound-card-review/). Douglas Insights estimates that about 1 in 6 buyers of headphones above USD 300 also buys a DAC or amplifier. Summed, 1.20 + 1.00 + 0.80 + 0.60 = 3.60 points, a Douglas Insights estimate.

## What holds sound card volume back: on-board audio, memory-squeezed PC budgets or tariffs?

Three restraints remove 1.30 points a year from sound card volume growth: on-board audio and USB headsets take 0.60 points, memory-squeezed PC budgets 0.40 points and tariffs 0.30 points.

On-board audio is the heaviest drag because a modern motherboard codec, a USB-C headset or a Bluetooth earbud is good enough for most listeners. Creative's audio, speakers and headphones sales fell to USD 57.1 million in its 2026 financial year from USD 63.2 million, and it targets flat revenue with an operating loss for 2027, its [2026 results](https://links.sgx.com/1.0.0/corporate-announcements/CML2I92FNNJPQ8T7/901865_EarningsReleaseH226.pdf) show. Douglas Insights estimates that internal card units fall about 2% a year in volume.

PC budgets take 0.40 points: "Higher memory pricing continued to weigh on the market for DIY PC builds and standalone components, which shrank year-over-year during the quarter," Corsair said on [5 November 2026](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/0001743759/000119312526449747/crsr-ex99_1.htm), even as its memory sales rose 43% to USD 167.3 million on price, and 16GB overtook 32GB as the most common Steam memory size at 41.42% in October 2026, [Windows Central](https://windowscentral.com/gaming/pc-gaming/steam-october-survey-windows-11-pc-gaming-hardware) reported. Tariffs take the last 0.30 points: Focusrite, which earns about a third of its revenue in the US, said tariffs on Chinese-origin goods ranged from 25% to over 75%, its [Annual Report 2026](https://focusriteplc.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Focusrite-Annual-Report-and-Accounts-2026.pdf) states.

## Which region buys the most sound cards, and where does demand grow fastest?

North America buys the most sound cards, USD 493 million or 33.0% of 2025 value, and Asia Pacific grows fastest, 4.6% a year from USD 434 million to USD 680 million by 2035.

| Region | Value 2025 | Share 2025 | Value 2026 | CAGR 2026-2035 | Value 2035 |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| North America | USD 493 million | 33.0% | USD 509 million | 3.2% | USD 676 million |
| Europe | USD 448 million | 30.0% | USD 462 million | 3.0% | USD 603 million |
| Asia Pacific | USD 434 million | 29.0% | USD 453 million | 4.6% | USD 680 million |
| Latin America | USD 67.3 million | 4.5% | USD 69.8 million | 3.8% | USD 97.7 million |
| Middle East and Africa | USD 52.3 million | 3.5% | USD 54.4 million | 4.0% | USD 77.5 million |

North America leads because it has the largest pool of paying home musicians, podcasters and streamers, and Focusrite earns about one third of its group revenue in the United States, its [Annual Report 2026](https://focusriteplc.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Focusrite-Annual-Report-and-Accounts-2026.pdf) shows. Regional value grows 3.2% a year to USD 676 million, a Douglas Insights estimate, slowed by tariff-driven price rises on imported interfaces.

Europe, USD 448 million, grows 3.0% on a mature recording base in Germany, the UK and France. Asia Pacific, USD 434 million, grows fastest at 4.6% on creators and gamers in China, Japan, South Korea, India and Indonesia, although Creative's Asia Pacific sales fell 16% in its 2026 year, per its [results](https://links.sgx.com/1.0.0/corporate-announcements/CML2I92FNNJPQ8T7/901865_EarningsReleaseH226.pdf). Latin America, USD 67.3 million, grows 3.8%, and the Middle East and Africa, USD 52.3 million, grows 4.0% on young creator populations in Brazil, Mexico, Saudi Arabia and Nigeria. Regional values sum to USD 1.55 billion in 2026, 0.07% above the headline, and USD 2.13 billion in 2035, 0.91% above it.

## Which companies lead the sound card market?

Focusrite leads sound cards with about 9% of 2025 value, Douglas Insights estimates, ahead of Universal Audio at about 7%, Music Tribe (Behringer) at about 6%, Yamaha with Steinberg at about 5% and Fender's PreSonus at about 4%.

| Company | Sound card lines | Latest reported figure | Source date |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Focusrite | Scarlett, Clarett, Vocaster interfaces | Content Creation GBP 118.5 million in 12 months to February 2026, up 2.0% | 28 June 2026 |
| Creative Technology | Sound Blaster AE-X, AE-5, USB DACs | FY2026 sales USD 60.9 million, down 10% | 20 August 2026 |
| Corsair (Elgato) | Wave XLR, streaming audio | Gamer and Creator Peripherals USD 116.5 million in Q3 2026, up 3% | 5 November 2026 |
| Universal Audio | Apollo and Volt interfaces | Private; no filed figures | Not applicable |
| Yamaha (Steinberg) | UR and IXO interfaces | Results reported within musical instruments and audio | Company filings |

Focusrite has the widest interface range; its pro-forma revenue for the twelve months to 28 February 2026 was GBP 164.6 million, up 1.3%, with Audio Reproduction, its speaker and live sound side, down 0.6% to GBP 46.1 million, its [Annual Report 2026](https://focusriteplc.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Focusrite-Annual-Report-and-Accounts-2026.pdf) shows. Creative cut its net loss to USD 0.6 million in its 2026 year from USD 10.5 million, helped by a USD 1.3 million US Customs tariff refund, its [results](https://links.sgx.com/1.0.0/corporate-announcements/CML2I92FNNJPQ8T7/901865_EarningsReleaseH226.pdf) show, and holds about 2% of the market, a Douglas Insights estimate.

Corsair's third-quarter 2026 revenue rose 6% to USD 367.0 million, per its [5 November 2026 release](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/0001743759/000119312526449747/crsr-ex99_1.htm), and its Elgato line sells the XLR interfaces and mixers streamers use. ASUS, RME, MOTU, Audient, Native Instruments, Antelope Audio, M-Audio, FiiO and hundreds of smaller makers share the remaining 67%, a Douglas Insights estimate.

Competition splits into three tiers, Douglas Insights estimates. Focusrite, Music Tribe and PreSonus fight for the USD 100 to USD 250 two-input tier, where about 3.2 million interfaces sold in 2025; Universal Audio, RME, MOTU and Antelope Audio hold the USD 1,000-plus studio tier of about 150,000 units; and Creative, ASUS and FiiO share consumer DACs and internal cards. The top five makers hold about 31% of value, so no single brand sets price outside the two-input tier.

## How much does a sound card cost, from a USB dongle to a multi-channel interface?

A sound card sells for an average USD 115 in 2025, Douglas Insights estimates, from USD 15 to USD 40 for a USB headphone dongle to USD 1,000 to USD 3,000 for a multi-channel Thunderbolt studio interface.

The price ladder follows input count, preamp quality and conversion. A two-input USB audio interface sells for about USD 100 to USD 250, and an eight-input desktop interface for about USD 400 to USD 900, Douglas Insights estimates, giving the segment its USD 202 average. Internal PCIe cards sell for about USD 50 to USD 300 and average about USD 94, and external USB DACs and gaming sound cards average about USD 60 because cheap dongles dominate units.

Average price rises 1.2% a year in the base case, to about USD 130 in 2035, because interfaces gain share and tariffs lift landed prices in the US. Component costs are the swing factor: Creative said a supply constraint on some electronic components "driven by the rapid AI development" raised product costs in its [2026 results](https://links.sgx.com/1.0.0/corporate-announcements/CML2I92FNNJPQ8T7/901865_EarningsReleaseH226.pdf), and its gross margin was 33% for the year and 36% in the second half, or 31% in that half before the tariff refund. One eight-input interface is worth about 15 USB dongles, a Douglas Insights estimate.

## What if PC budgets stay squeezed or the creator boom returns: how large is the sound card market in 2035?

The sound card market ends 2035 between USD 1.67 billion and USD 2.65 billion across our three cases, around a base of USD 2.11 billion. Creator demand and PC component costs set most of the spread.

| Case | Unit leg | Price leg | Revenue rate | 2035 value |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Slower | 0.80% | 0.30% | 1.10% | USD 1.67 billion |
| Base case | 2.30% | 1.20% | 3.53% | USD 2.11 billion |
| Faster | 3.80% | 2.00% | 5.88% | USD 2.65 billion |

In the slower case memory and component prices stay high to 2028, on-board audio absorbs gamers and creator growth stalls, taking 1.5 points off unit growth and 0.9 points off price. In the faster case creator video and home recording grow at their 2021 to 2025 pace and premium interfaces gain share, adding 1.5 points of units and 0.8 points of price. One extra point of yearly revenue growth adds about USD 0.21 billion to 2035 value, a Douglas Insights estimate.

Live signals sit between slower and base. Corsair's 3% peripherals growth and Focusrite's flat Scarlett registrations point to steady interface demand; Creative's 10% sales fall and Corsair's warning on DIY PC builds point down for internal cards and consumer DACs. The signal to watch is Focusrite's next full-year result: if Content Creation growth returns above 5%, Douglas Insights would raise interface growth by about 0.5 points.

## Which rules shape sound cards, from EU RoHS to FCC Part 15?

Three rule sets shape sound cards: the EU RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU on hazardous substances, [FCC](https://www.fcc.gov/) Part 15 limits on radio emissions from digital devices in the US, and the EU common charger Directive (EU) 2022/2380 for USB-C on headsets and portable audio.

The materials layer applies to every board. The [RoHS Directive](https://eur-lex.europa.eu/eli/dir/2011/65/oj/eng) limits lead, mercury, cadmium and other substances in electrical equipment sold in the EU, so DACs, op-amps and connectors must use compliant solders and finishes. In the US, every sound card is a digital device under [47 CFR Part 15](https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-47/chapter-I/subchapter-A/part-15) and must meet its unintentional radiator emission limits before sale. Douglas Insights estimates that compliance testing costs about USD 5,000 to USD 20,000 per new model.

The connector layer is shifting. The [common charger Directive](https://eur-lex.europa.eu/eli/dir/2022/2380/oj/eng) requires USB-C charging on headphones, headsets and portable speakers sold in the EU from 28 December 2024; desktop sound cards are not listed, but makers have moved new USB interfaces and DACs to USB-C to match. Douglas Insights estimates that about 85% of USB sound cards launched in 2026 use USB-C.

## Douglas Exclusive: the Creator Versus Consumer Audio Split

The Creator Versus Consumer Audio Split is a Douglas Insights model of 9 inputs: 8 company records and 1 platform record, listed below. It measures how far creator audio hardware is running ahead of consumer PC audio.

| Date | Input | What it moves |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 4 November 2025 | Focusrite: Content Creation up 11.0% (12 months to August 2025) | Interface demand |
| 4 November 2025 | Focusrite: Scarlett registrations flat against industry minus 1% | Interface demand |
| 29 May 2026 | Creative: Sound Blaster AE-X announced | Internal cards |
| 28 June 2026 | Focusrite: Content Creation up 2.0% (12 months to February 2026) | Interface demand |
| 28 June 2026 | Focusrite: Audio Reproduction down 0.6% | Pro audio |
| 20 August 2026 | Creative: audio, speakers and headphones down 9.7% | Consumer PC audio |
| 3 November 2026 | Steam: 16GB RAM back on top at 41.42% | PC budgets |
| 5 November 2026 | Corsair: Gamer and Creator Peripherals up 3% | Creator and gamer audio |
| 5 November 2026 | Corsair: memory sales up 43% on price | PC budgets |

The finding, a Douglas Insights estimate: creator hardware is growing about 2% to 3% in value, with Focusrite's Content Creation up 2.0% and Corsair's peripherals up 3%, while consumer PC audio is shrinking about 10%, with Creative's audio sales down 9.7%. Applied to our segments, interfaces at 62% of value growing 2%, external DACs and gaming cards at 26% growing 3% and internal cards at 12% falling 10% give a 2026 value rise of only about 0.8%, against 3.5% in our base case.

The split changes how to read 2026. If it holds, the market reaches about USD 1.51 billion in 2026, about USD 40 million below our base, and sits on the slower path. Our base assumes memory prices ease in 2027 and the Scarlett replacement wave lifts interfaces back to about 4% growth, so the gap closes by 2028, a Douglas Insights estimate.

## How does the methodology turn 13.0 million sound cards into USD 1.50 billion?

Our methodology multiplies about 13.0 million sound cards sold in 2025 by an average USD 115 each to reach USD 1.50 billion, then grows units 2.3% a year and price 1.2% a year.

The model covers 3 product types, 4 end users and 5 regions, using 54 data points, 17 sourced and 37 modelled. Units come from a type build: about 4.6 million USB audio interfaces at USD 202, about 6.5 million external USB DACs and gaming sound cards at USD 60 and about 1.9 million internal PCIe cards at USD 94, Douglas Insights estimates drawn from company disclosures and installed-base counts. Arithmetic: 13.0 million x USD 115 = USD 1.495 billion; USD 1.495 billion x (1.023 x 1.012)^10 = USD 2.11 billion. Units reach about 13.3 million in 2026 and 16.3 million in 2035.

Two cross-checks agree. First, our 9% Focusrite share equals about USD 135 million, about 85% of the roughly USD 158 million its GBP 118.5 million of Content Creation sales is worth, per its [Annual Report 2026](https://focusriteplc.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Focusrite-Annual-Report-and-Accounts-2026.pdf), a plausible share for interfaces inside a segment that also sells synthesisers and software. Second, our 2% Creative share, about USD 30 million, is about half of the USD 57.1 million its audio category sold, the rest being speakers and headphones. AI tools help draft the text and automated checks test the arithmetic and links; the Douglas Insights research desk chooses the sources, builds the model and approves publication, as our [editorial standards](https://www.douglasinsights.com/research-methodology/) explain.

## What counts in the sound card study, and what is excluded?

The sound card study counts USB audio interfaces, external USB DACs and gaming sound cards, and internal PCIe sound cards sold as separate products. On-board motherboard codecs, microphones, headphones, speakers, mixing consoles without a computer interface and software are excluded.

The study splits value by 3 product types, 4 end users and 5 regions: North America, Europe, Asia Pacific, Latin America, and the Middle East and Africa. Home cinema amplification appears in our [AV Receiver Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/av-receiver-market/) report, game spending in the [Gaming Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/gaming-market/) study and PC cooling parts in the [Miniature Fan Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/miniature-fan-market/) report.
