## Key takeaways

- Super engineering plastics are worth USD 5.33 billion in 2025: 330,200 tonnes at an average USD 16,150 per tonne.
- Value reaches USD 9.13 billion by 2035, a 5.52% revenue CAGR from 5.1% tonnage growth and a 0.4% price leg.
- PPS leads with 22.9% of value; PEEK and PEKK grow fastest at 7.43% a year on motor insulation, fab parts and implants.
- Asia Pacific holds 56.3% of value and grows 6.15% a year to USD 5.45 billion.
- PAEK nameplate runs at 51.4% utilisation, while sulfones and PEI need new trains as 2035 demand exceeds current capacity by 28.2% and 24.3%.

Victrex built its Panjin plant in China for 1,500 tonnes a year of polyetheretherketone (PEEK); by the end of its 2025 financial year the site had produced about 50 tonnes, and on 11 May 2026 the company [booked a £60.6 million impairment](https://www.victrexplc.com/media/dm1ceq1e/victrex-plc-interim-results-announcement-h1-26-final-110526.pdf) because one finishing stage cannot reach that nameplate. Fifteen hundred against fifty is the whole story of this business in two numbers: capacity is quick to announce and slow to qualify. Super engineering plastics are thermoplastics rated for continuous service at or above 150 °C, and the market covers polyphenylene sulfide (PPS), liquid crystal polymers (LCP), polysulfones, polyaryletherketones, polyetherimide (PEI) and polyimide resins sold as neat resin or compounds. Douglas Insights sizes the super engineering plastics market at USD 5.33 billion in 2025, the product of 330,200 tonnes and an average USD 16,150 per tonne. Demand rises to USD 9.13 billion in 2035, a revenue CAGR of 5.52% split into 5.1% tonnage growth and a 0.4% price leg. ## Which polymer family makes the money in super engineering plastics: PPS, LCP or PEEK?

Polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) leads super engineering plastics with 22.9% of 2025 value, USD 1.22 billion. It is the cheapest resin that holds its shape near 200 °C, so automotive and appliance molders buy it by the container, not the drum.

| Polymer family | Share 2025 | Value 2025 | CAGR 2026 to 2035 | Value 2035 |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) | 22.9% | USD 1.22 billion | 5.37% | USD 2.06 billion |
| Liquid crystal polymers (LCP) | 21.9% | USD 1.17 billion | 6.24% | USD 2.14 billion |
| Polysulfones (PSU, PESU and PPSU) | 19.5% | USD 1.04 billion | 4.12% | USD 1.56 billion |
| Polyaryletherketones (PEEK and PEKK) | 16.4% | USD 874.6 million | 7.43% | USD 1.79 billion |
| Polyetherimide (PEI) | 10.8% | USD 575.9 million | 4.47% | USD 891.8 million |
| Polyimide and polyamide-imide resins | 8.5% | USD 453.3 million | 3.68% | USD 650.6 million |

Polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) carries 141,600 tonnes at USD 8.62 per kg; its value share trails its 42.9% tonnage share because Chinese reactors have pushed general-purpose grades toward commodity pricing. Liquid crystal polymers (LCP) hold USD 1.17 billion, 21.9% of value, since a melt that flows into 0.2 mm connector walls has no cheap substitute in board-to-board and memory sockets. Polysulfones (PSU, PESU and PPSU) take USD 1.04 billion and 19.5%: they are transparent, steam-sterilisable and spinnable into hollow-fibre membranes. Polyetherimide (PEI) earns USD 575.9 million, a 10.8% share built on aircraft cabin parts and reusable food-service trays. Polyimide and polyamide-imide resins close the table at USD 453.3 million and 8.5%, a small tonnage at the top of the heat scale used for bushings, thrust washers and wafer-handling parts.

Polyaryletherketone (PAEK) resins, meaning PEEK and polyetherketoneketone (PEKK), are the fastest-growing family at 7.43% a year, rising from USD 874.6 million to USD 1.79 billion, because electric-motor wire insulation, semiconductor fab parts and spinal implants all need a polymer that survives 260 °C service. Our segment values for 2035 sum to USD 9.09 billion, 0.4% below the headline, and the gap is the mix effect between families.

## Why are electric drivetrains and fine-pitch connectors lifting super engineering plastics demand?

Electric drivetrains supply 1.9 points of the 5.1% annual tonnage growth in super engineering plastics, because 800-volt inverters, hairpin stators and battery busbar holders need parts that stay rigid and insulating above 150 °C.

Automotive and e-mobility is the largest of four drivers. A combustion car uses PPS mostly in coolant pumps, thermostat housings and sensors; an electric car adds inverter frames, motor slot liners, busbar carriers and charging-port bodies. PEEK and PEKK wire coatings let hairpin windings run hotter in thinner layers, and Douglas Insights estimates that motor-insulation film and extrusion grades consumed about 1,900 tonnes of polyaryletherketone in 2025. That is 14.4% of the 13,200-tonne family. We hold the e-mobility contribution at 1.9 points even though electric vehicle (EV) sales growth has slowed in Europe, because content per vehicle keeps rising. Douglas Insights calculates that a battery-electric car carries about 2.4 kg of super engineering plastics against roughly 0.9 kg in a comparable petrol car, so each EV adds about 1.5 kg of high-heat resin. Thermal-management modules, oil-cooled motor end caps and 800-volt connector housings account for most of that gain.

Electrical and electronics adds 1.4 points. Liquid crystal polymers dominate fine-pitch connectors, and every step in data-rate standards shrinks pitch and wall thickness again. At Victrex, Electronics volume [rose 14% to 253 tonnes](https://www.victrexplc.com/media/dm1ceq1e/victrex-plc-interim-results-announcement-h1-26-final-110526.pdf) in the six months to 31 March 2026, while Energy and Industrial rose 19% to 384 tonnes. AI server racks are the newest pull: high-wattage power shelves, liquid-cooling quick connectors and optical transceiver housings use LCP, PPS and PESU where nylon would creep.

Industrial and energy contributes 1.0 point. Polysulfone and polyethersulfone membranes treat water and serum, and BASF lists electrolyser frames, gaskets and separator membranes among the [Ultrason applications](https://plastics-rubber.basf.com/global/en/performance_polymers/products/ultrason), with long-term service up to 180 °C. Oil-and-gas seals, compressor valve plates and pump wear rings remain steady PEEK outlets, and semiconductor fabs buy chemical-mechanical polishing retaining rings and wafer carriers by the thousand.

Medical and aerospace adds the final 0.8 points. PEEK spinal cages and PPSU instrument trays grow with procedure counts, and PEI and PEKK replace aluminium in cabin brackets and ducting as narrow-body build rates recover. The four contributions, 1.9 plus 1.4 plus 1.0 plus 0.8, equal the 5.1% volume leg; the 0.4% price leg comes from mix, since the fastest families carry the highest prices per kg.

## Which headwinds slow super engineering plastics, from Chinese PEEK to idle PPS reactors?

Three headwinds remove 1.4 points from super engineering plastics tonnage growth in our slower case, cutting the volume leg from 5.1% to 3.7%, with domestic Chinese competition the largest at 0.6 points.

Chinese PEEK and PPS capacity is the first and heaviest drag, worth 0.6 points of value-equivalent volume and most of the price pressure. Victrex told investors that competition has increased [particularly in value-added resellers](https://www.victrexplc.com/media/dm1ceq1e/victrex-plc-interim-results-announcement-h1-26-final-110526.pdf), and its average selling price fell to £69 per kg in the first half of 2026 from £72 a year earlier. In PPS, our register finds global reactors running at 61.3% of nameplate, which keeps general-purpose compound prices close to cash cost.

Electronics destocking removes 0.5 points. Syensqo reported [Specialty Polymers net sales of €2.29 billion](https://www.syensqo.com/sites/g/files/alwlxe161/files/2026-02/20260226_Syensqo%20fourth%20quarter%20and%20full%20year%202025%20results_EN.pdf) for 2025, down 9.1% organically, mainly on lower Electronics volumes; excluding Electronics, its volumes were roughly flat. Super engineering plastics follow handset and PC build cycles with a lag of two to three quarters.

Substitution trims 0.3 points. High-temperature polyamides and polyphthalamide compete with PPS in under-hood parts up to about 150 °C, and die-cast aluminium still wins large motor housings on cost per part.

## How much does a kilogram of PPS, LCP or PEEK resin cost a molder in 2025?

Super engineering plastics averaged USD 16.15 per kg in 2025, or USD 16,150 per tonne. Realised prices span roughly USD 6.80 per kg for general PPS to above USD 90 per kg for branded PEEK, a spread set by heat rating and qualification.

| Polymer family | Realised band, USD per kg | Weighted average, USD per kg |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) | 6.80 to 11.40 | 8.62 |
| Liquid crystal polymers (LCP) | 10.90 to 19.20 | 14.18 |
| Polysulfones (PSU, PESU and PPSU) | 13.60 to 24.80 | 17.84 |
| Polyetherimide (PEI) | 16.90 to 27.30 | 21.46 |
| Polyimide and polyamide-imide resins | 44.00 to 81.00 | 57.90 |
| Polyaryletherketones (PEEK and PEKK) | 38.00 to 92.00 | 66.30 |

Bands are Douglas Insights realised prices for compounds and neat resin at the molder gate, net of rebates. At the top, Victrex reported an [average selling price of £70 per kg](https://www.victrexplc.com/media/1h5l3pgy/victrex-plc-preliminary-results-announcement-fy25-final-021225.pdf) for its 2025 financial year on 4,164 tonnes, down from £78. Its Medical business sold 186 tonnes for £58.8 million, which works out at about £316 per kg, close to five times the group average. Chinese PEEK powder for industrial compounding clears near the bottom of the 38.00 band. PPS buyers pay 7.7 times less per kg than PEEK buyers, and that ratio, not heat resistance alone, decides most material selections. Douglas Insights puts the price leg at 0.4% a year: like-for-like prices drift down about 0.6%, and mix toward PEEK and LCP adds about 1.0 point.

## Which companies control PPS, LCP and PEEK resin supply, and how concentrated is it?

Syensqo leads super engineering plastics with a 13.8% share of 2025 value, about USD 735.9 million on our estimate, and the top three suppliers, Syensqo, Celanese and DIC, hold 30.1% between them.

| Company | Position built on | Share 2025 (Douglas Insights estimate) | Value 2025 |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Syensqo | KetaSpire PEEK, Ryton PPS, Radel PPSU, Udel PSU | 13.8% | USD 735.9 million |
| Celanese | Vectra and Zenite LCP, Fortron PPS | 8.6% | USD 458.6 million |
| DIC | PPS resin and compounds | 7.7% | USD 410.6 million |
| Victrex | VICTREX PEEK, medical implant grades | 7.1% | USD 378.6 million |
| Toray | Torelina PPS | 6.2% | USD 330.6 million |
| Polyplastics | Laperos LCP, Durafide PPS | 5.3% | USD 282.6 million |
| SABIC | Ultem PEI | 4.6% | USD 245.3 million |
| Sumitomo Chemical | Sumikasuper LCP, Sumikaexcel PES | 3.4% | USD 181.3 million |
| BASF | Ultrason PSU, PESU and PPSU | 2.9% | USD 154.6 million |

Syensqo has the broadest bench: PEEK, PPS and three sulfones under one sales force. Its estimate rests on 28.5% of the [€2.29 billion Specialty Polymers line](https://www.syensqo.com/sites/g/files/alwlxe161/files/2026-02/20260226_Syensqo%20fourth%20quarter%20and%20full%20year%202025%20results_EN.pdf) converted at USD 1.13 per euro, because the rest of that line is fluoropolymers and other materials outside this scope. Celanese pairs two LCP brands with Fortron PPS and sells both into connectors and fuel systems. DIC states it has the [world's largest PPS production capacity](https://www.dic-global.com/en/products/pps/) and more than 250 commercial grades. Toray and Polyplastics complete a Japanese PPS and LCP bloc that supplies the Asian electronics chain.

Victrex is the purest play: £292.7 million of revenue, almost all PEEK, which Douglas Insights converts at USD 1.30 per pound into a 7.1% share. Its Panjin plant was commissioned in April 2024 for 1,500 tonnes a year, yet on 11 May 2026 Victrex [impaired it by £60.6 million](https://www.victrexplc.com/media/dm1ceq1e/victrex-plc-interim-results-announcement-h1-26-final-110526.pdf) after finding one late-stage process step cannot deliver nameplate. SABIC holds PEI through Ultem; Sumitomo Chemical, BASF and Evonik with VESTAKEEP PEEK fill the next tier, and Kureha co-owns Fortron Industries with Celanese.

## Where do super engineering plastics tonnes concentrate, and why does Asia Pacific keep gaining?

Asia Pacific buys 56.3% of super engineering plastics value, USD 3.00 billion in 2025. It also grows fastest, at 6.15% a year, because most connector, handset, EV and appliance molding happens in China, Japan, Korea and Taiwan.

| Region | 2025 | 2026 | 2035 | CAGR 2026 to 2035 |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Asia Pacific | USD 3.00 billion | USD 3.19 billion | USD 5.45 billion | 6.15% |
| Europe | USD 1.05 billion | USD 1.09 billion | USD 1.60 billion | 4.33% |
| North America | USD 943.9 million | USD 988.6 million | USD 1.50 billion | 4.74% |
| Latin America | USD 192.0 million | USD 202.0 million | USD 319.4 million | 5.22% |
| Middle East and Africa | USD 149.3 million | USD 157.6 million | USD 257.2 million | 5.59% |
| Global | USD 5.33 billion | USD 5.63 billion | USD 9.13 billion | 5.52% |

Asia Pacific reaches USD 5.45 billion by 2035, and China alone accounts for about two thirds of the regional figure on our country split. Europe holds USD 1.05 billion, 19.6% of value, with German and French automotive, aerospace and medical demand, and grows 4.33% as EV programmes slip. North America takes USD 943.9 million at 4.74%, led by aerospace, implants, oilfield seals and semiconductor fab tooling. Latin America adds USD 192.0 million, mostly Brazilian and Mexican automotive PPS, growing 5.22%. Middle East and Africa is the wildcard at USD 149.3 million and 5.59% growth: desalination and water-reuse plants specify polysulfone and polyethersulfone ultrafiltration membranes, and one large Gulf membrane award shifts the regional figure by several points.

## Why does a 150 °C continuous-use rating split super engineering plastics from nylon and PBT?

A continuous-use rating of 150 °C is the dividing line for super engineering plastics. Below it, nylon and polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) at about USD 2 to 4 per kg on our bands win; above it, only the six families covered here qualify.

Heat ratings rise with price. Sulfones serve to about 160 to 180 °C, PEI to about 170 °C, PPS to about 200 to 220 °C, PEEK to about 260 °C and polyimides higher still. Glass and carbon fibre lift stiffness further, and Douglas Insights reckons about 70% of super engineering plastics tonnage ships as reinforced compound rather than neat resin. Buyers do not pay for heat they cannot use. A connector that sees a 260 °C peak for under a minute in lead-free reflow needs LCP or PPS, while an implant that sees 37 °C for 20 years needs PEEK for fatigue and imaging, not heat. Reinforced thermoplastics also compete with the thermosets covered in our [Thermoset Composites Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/thermoset-composites-market/) report, especially in aircraft interiors and electrical housings.

## Which food-contact, implant and flammability standards must PEEK and sulfone grades meet?

Three rule sets govern super engineering plastics: food-contact clearance such as US 21 CFR 177.2415, implant biocompatibility testing and flammability ratings. We find each adds 12 to 36 months of qualification before a new grade earns revenue.

The US Food and Drug Administration clears poly(aryletherketone) resins for [repeated-use food contact under 21 CFR 177.2415](https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-21/chapter-I/subchapter-B/part-177/subpart-C/section-177.2415), provided the resin has a weight-average molecular weight of at least 12,000 and a glass transition of at least 142 °C. In the EU, Regulation (EU) No 10/2011 sets migration limits for plastic food-contact materials. Implant grades follow ISO 10993 biocompatibility testing and a device master file, which is why medical PEEK prices sit far above industrial PEEK. Electrical parts need UL 94 V-0 ratings at stated wall thickness, and cabin parts must pass aircraft heat-release and smoke tests. Implant demand is tracked in the [Orthopedic Trauma Implants Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/orthopedic-trauma-implants-market/) report.

## What share of PEEK tonnage ends up in spinal cages and other medical devices?

Medical devices take only 4.5% of Victrex PEEK tonnes but 20.1% of its revenue. Implant-grade polyaryletherketone is the most valuable kilogram in super engineering plastics, and qualification time explains why new PEEK makers target industrial grades first.

Victrex Medical shipped [186 tonnes for £58.8 million](https://www.victrexplc.com/media/1h5l3pgy/victrex-plc-preliminary-results-announcement-fy25-final-021225.pdf) in its 2025 financial year. In the first half of 2026 it shipped 88 tonnes, and Medical revenue fell 9% to £27.6 million. Douglas Insights counts about 610 tonnes of implant and device-grade PAEK worldwide in 2025, 4.6% of family tonnage. Spinal cages, trauma plates, dental frameworks and cranial plates are the main uses; PPSU sterilisation trays and PSU dialyser housings add sulfone tonnage on the device side.

## What if Chinese PEEK output and EV programmes both surprise: where is the 2035 value?

Super engineering plastics land between USD 7.52 billion and USD 10.85 billion in 2035 across our three cases, with USD 9.13 billion as the base, so the swing between cases is USD 3.33 billion.

| Case | Volume leg | Price leg | Revenue CAGR | 2035 value |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Slower | 3.7% | -0.2% | 3.49% | USD 7.52 billion |
| Base | 5.1% | 0.4% | 5.52% | USD 9.13 billion |
| Faster | 6.4% | 0.9% | 7.36% | USD 10.85 billion |

The slower case assumes Chinese PEEK and PPS keep undercutting Western grades and electronics stays soft; the faster case assumes 800-volt platforms spread to mid-priced cars and LCP content per AI server doubles. Tonnage is the lever that matters. One extra point of annual volume growth adds about USD 907 million to the 2035 total, while one point less takes away about USD 832 million. Panjin is the test: Victrex [reported on 11 May 2026](https://www.victrexplc.com/media/dm1ceq1e/victrex-plc-interim-results-announcement-h1-26-final-110526.pdf) that the 1,500-tonne plant cannot reach nameplate with its current finishing step, so Western PEEK supply in China grows more slowly than planned and domestic producers fill the gap at lower prices, a mix that pulls toward the slower price leg.

## Douglas Exclusive: the super engineering plastics nameplate register

The nameplate register is a Douglas Insights model of super engineering plastics capacity, built from 38 inputs. Those are 30 capacity cells (six polymer families across five regions), six demand totals and two Victrex disclosures: 4,164 tonnes sold and the 1,500-tonne Panjin nameplate.

| Polymer family | Nameplate 2025, tonnes | Demand 2025, tonnes | Utilisation 2025 | Base-case demand 2035 vs 2025 nameplate |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) | 231,000 | 141,600 | 61.3% | 100.8% |
| Liquid crystal polymers (LCP) | 121,500 | 82,400 | 67.8% | 111.5% |
| Polysulfones (PSU, PESU and PPSU) | 74,800 | 58,300 | 77.9% | 128.2% |
| Polyetherimide (PEI) | 35,600 | 26,900 | 75.6% | 124.3% |
| Polyimide and polyamide-imide resins | 11,300 | 7,800 | 69.0% | 113.5% |
| Polyaryletherketones (PEEK and PEKK) | 25,700 | 13,200 | 51.4% | 84.5% |
| All super engineering plastics | 499,900 | 330,200 | 66.1% | 108.6% |

The register counts nameplate, not announcements: a train enters only once it has shipped qualified grades. Its finding is a split market. PAEK runs at 51.4% utilisation, and even base-case 2035 demand of about 21,700 tonnes fills only 84.5% of today's nameplate, so PEEK price pressure lasts the decade. Sulfones and PEI sit at the other end: by 2035 base-case demand exceeds current nameplate by 28.2% and 24.3%, so new sulfone and PEI trains, not PEEK lines, are where capital is short. The register is a modelled estimate, not an official capacity list, and it is refreshed when a producer discloses a change.

## What receipts and cross-checks support the 330,200-tonne super engineering plastics model?

Our receipt for super engineering plastics is 330,200 tonnes multiplied by USD 16,150 per tonne, which equals USD 5.33 billion, built from 31 countries and 214 data points.

Tonnes are built per polymer family: PPS 141,600, LCP 82,400, sulfones 58,300, PEI 26,900, PAEK 13,200 and polyimides 7,800. Each family is priced at its weighted band, and the six family values sum to the same USD 5.33 billion, a gap of USD 0.1 million. Cross-check one: Victrex sold 4,164 tonnes, 31.5% of our PAEK tonnage, and its revenue equals 43.5% of our PAEK value; the gap matches its premium over Chinese grades. Cross-check two: our Syensqo estimate is 28.5% of its Specialty Polymers sales, consistent with that line's split between high-heat polymers and fluoropolymers. Douglas Insights expects 543,000 tonnes in 2035 in the base case, 1.64 times the 2025 volume.
