Apple put a price of USD 1,999 on its first folding iPhone on 9 September 2026, or USD 83.29 a month over 24 months, with US sales from 23 October 2026, according to the [Apple Newsroom](https://www.apple.com/newsroom/2026/09/apple-unveils-iphone-duo/); the monthly figure tells you how most Americans will buy one. The U.S. foldable smartphone market covers new book-type, flip-type and tri-fold handsets whose main display folds on one or two hinges, sold to consumers and businesses in the United States through carriers, brand stores and retailers. Douglas Insights counts 3.80 million U.S. foldable shipments in 2025 at an average realised price of USD 1,310, or USD 4.98 billion, rising to USD 17.77 billion by 2035, a revenue compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 13.57% over 2026 to 2035. The United States is about 87% of the North America row in our global [Foldable Smartphone Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/foldable-smartphone-market/) report, the study sits inside our [information technology and semiconductors coverage](https://www.douglasinsights.com/industry/ict-semiconductors/), and every figure follows the Douglas Insights [research methodology](https://www.douglasinsights.com/research-methodology/).

## Who sells foldable phones in the United States: Samsung, Motorola, Google and now Apple?

Samsung leads U.S. foldable smartphones with about 58.0% of 2025 value, USD 2.89 billion, Douglas Insights estimates. With Motorola and Google, the top three hold 94.0%, because Huawei, Honor, vivo and OPPO skip U.S. carriers.

| Brand | Estimated U.S. share 2025 | Estimated value 2025 | What the position rests on |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Samsung | 58.0% | USD 2.89 billion | Galaxy Z Fold and Flip lines at AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon; Galaxy Z TriFold from January 2026 |
| Motorola (Lenovo) | 24.5% | USD 1.22 billion | razr flips from USD 799.99 across eight carrier and prepaid brands |
| Google | 11.5% | USD 572.7 million | Pixel 10 Pro Fold at USD 1,799, rated IP68 |
| Others | 6.0% | USD 298.8 million | OnePlus and earlier-generation models still sold new |
| Apple | 0.0% | None in 2025 | iPhone Duo on sale from 23 October 2026 |

Samsung's share rests on carrier reach. Its Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, Fold8 and Flip8 went on general sale on 7 August 2026 at USD 2,099.99, USD 1,899.99 and USD 1,199.99 through AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon as well as Amazon.com, Best Buy and Samsung.com, per [Samsung's 22 July 2026 release](https://news.samsung.com/us/samsung-galaxy-z-fold8-ultra-fold8-flip8-foldables-perfected-every-way-of-living/).

Motorola holds 24.5%, about USD 1.22 billion, on flips alone. Its razr, razr+ and razr ultra went on sale on 21 May 2026 at USD 799.99, USD 1,099.99 and USD 1,499.99, and the base razr launched the same day at Verizon, Boost Mobile, Spectrum Mobile, Visible, Xfinity Mobile, Consumer Cellular, Google Fi Wireless and Cox Mobile, according to [Motorola](https://motorolanews.com/power-style-and-flexibility-motorola-introduces-three-new-flip-devices-to-the-razr-family/). Google takes 11.5% with the Pixel 10 Pro Fold, unveiled on 20 August 2025 at USD 1,799 as the first foldable rated IP68 for dust and water, [TechCrunch reported](https://techcrunch.com/2025/08/20/google-unveils-its-1799-pixel-10-pro-fold). Douglas Insights expects Apple to take about 31% of U.S. foldable value in 2027, its first full year.

## Which U.S. foldable form factor earns more: book-type or flip?

Book-type foldables earn more, 65.5% of 2025 U.S. foldable value, USD 3.26 billion, because each sells for about USD 1,690 against roughly USD 920 for a flip. Book-type and tri-fold models also grow faster, at 14.60% a year.

| Form factor | Share 2025 | Value 2025 | Growth 2026-2035 | Value 2035 |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Book-type and tri-fold | 65.5% | USD 3.26 billion | 14.60% | USD 12.74 billion |
| Flip-type | 34.5% | USD 1.72 billion | 11.40% | USD 5.06 billion |

Book-type phones lead on price, not units. Douglas Insights counts about 1.93 million book-type units in 2025 against 1.87 million flips; a tablet-sized inner screen roughly doubles the realised price. The iPhone Duo, with a 7.6-inch inner display and 5.4-inch outer screen, joins this segment, and so does Samsung's Galaxy Z TriFold, which reached U.S. stores on 30 January 2026 at USD 2,899 after a 200,000-cycle folding test, according to [Samsung](https://news.samsung.com/us/highly-anticipated-samsung-galaxy-z-trifold-available-u-s-jan-30/); tri-folds had no U.S. sales in 2025.

Flips hold USD 1.72 billion and grow 11.40% a year to USD 5.06 billion. Their value share trails their unit share because carriers sell flips near slab-phone prices, and a USD 799.99 razr is often discounted further on prepaid brands. Display panels for both formats are sized in our [Smartphone Display Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/smartphone-display-market/) report.

## Why are U.S. foldable shipments growing 12.00% a year?

U.S. foldable shipments grow 12.00% a year to 2035, from 3.80 million to 11.81 million, and five forces explain all of it. Apple's entry adds 5.10 points; carrier trade-in and instalment offers add 2.40 points.

### Apple enters the category: 5.10 points

Apple adds 5.10 points. The iPhone Duo's hinge is engineered from more than 100 components and storage runs from 256GB to 2TB, per [Apple](https://www.apple.com/newsroom/2026/09/apple-unveils-iphone-duo/). The United States has a large iOS installed base that had no folding option before October 2026, so Douglas Insights gives Apple the largest single contribution.

### Carrier trade-in and instalments: 2.40 points

Carriers add 2.40 points. A USD 1,999 phone becomes USD 83.29 a month on a 24-month plan, and AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon carry every Samsung foldable at launch. Trade-in credits turn a foldable into an upgrade rather than a second purchase.

### Thinner book-types: 2.00 points

Thinner designs add 2.00 points. Samsung lists the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra and Fold8 in 256GB, 512GB and 1TB versions, and lighter book-types remove the old penalty of carrying twice the glass.

### Cheaper flips: 1.30 points

Flips add 1.30 points. A USD 799.99 razr at eight carriers and prepaid brands on day one, per [Motorola](https://motorolanews.com/power-style-and-flexibility-motorola-introduces-three-new-flip-devices-to-the-razr-family/), puts a foldable in the same price band as a mainstream slab phone.

### Durability proof and tri-folds: 1.20 points

Durability adds 1.20 points: an IP68 rating on the Pixel 10 Pro Fold and Samsung's 200,000-cycle test on the TriFold address the two fears that held buyers back. The five contributions, 5.10 + 2.40 + 2.00 + 1.30 + 1.20, sum to the 12.00% unit leg. Price adds 1.40% a year as Apple and tri-folds lift the mix.

## What holds back U.S. foldable phones: price, repair cost or tariffs?

Three restraints remove 2.60 points from U.S. foldable unit growth, which would otherwise run at 14.60% a year. The price premium takes 1.20 points, inner-screen repair cost and crease worries 0.80 points and tariff and supply risk 0.60 points.

Price comes first. Our USD 1,310 average realised price is well above a typical U.S. smartphone, and the cheapest new book-type in our ledger lists at USD 1,799. Douglas Insights removes 1.20 points for buyers who wait for prices to fall.

Repair cost removes 0.80 points: a cracked inner display is the most expensive repair on any phone, and the crease remains visible on many models. Tariff and supply risk removes 0.60 points. Smartphones were excluded from the reciprocal tariffs by a White House memorandum of 11 April 2025, as [C.H. Robinson summarised](https://www.chrobinson.com/en-us/resources/insights-and-advisories/client-advisories/2025q2/04-14-2025-client-advisory-white-house-announces-exclusions-for-certain-electronics), but foldables are assembled almost entirely in Asia, so any change to that exclusion would land directly on landed cost.

## Which U.S. regions buy the most foldable phones, from the South to the Northeast?

The South buys the most U.S. foldable smartphones, USD 1.84 billion or 37.0% of 2025 value, and grows fastest at 13.85% a year. The West follows at USD 1.29 billion, lifted by high-income metro areas in California and Washington.

| Census region | Value 2025 | Share 2025 | CAGR 2026-2035 | Value 2035 |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| South | USD 1.84 billion | 37.0% | 13.85% | USD 6.74 billion |
| West | USD 1.29 billion | 26.0% | 13.60% | USD 4.63 billion |
| Midwest | USD 921.3 million | 18.5% | 13.30% | USD 3.21 billion |
| Northeast | USD 921.3 million | 18.5% | 13.15% | USD 3.17 billion |

The South leads on population, as the largest Census region, and adds USD 4.90 billion by 2035. The West punches above its population on income, and its 13.60% growth reflects early iPhone Duo demand in technology-heavy metros.

The Midwest and Northeast each hold USD 921.3 million. The Northeast grows slowest, 13.15% a year to USD 3.17 billion, because its buyers already skew to premium slab iPhones that the Duo will partly replace rather than add to. In the data table the row labelled Global holds the U.S. total, USD 4.98 billion in 2025.

## How much do Americans pay for a foldable phone, from a USD 799.99 razr to a USD 2,899 TriFold?

A U.S. foldable smartphone sells for USD 1,310 on average in 2025 at realised sell-through, rising 1.40% a year to about USD 1,505 in 2035. List prices run from USD 799.99 for a razr to USD 2,899.

| Price tier | Share 2025 | Value 2025 | Typical models |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Under USD 1,000 | 22.0% | USD 1.10 billion | razr, discounted older flips |
| USD 1,000 to 1,799 | 46.0% | USD 2.29 billion | Galaxy Z Flip, razr+, razr ultra, Pixel 10 Pro Fold |
| USD 1,800 and above | 32.0% | USD 1.59 billion | Galaxy Z Fold, Fold Ultra, TriFold, iPhone Duo |

List prices overstate what buyers pay. Our nine-model U.S. launch ledger averages USD 1,700, so the USD 1,310 realised average equals 77.1% of list, because carriers fund trade-in credits and retailers cut older models within weeks. The top tier gains share fastest: the iPhone Duo enters at USD 1,999 and its 2TB version sits higher still.

## How will the iPhone Duo change who buys U.S. foldables, and at what price?

The iPhone Duo should take about 31% of U.S. foldable value in 2027, USD 1.99 billion, on roughly 1.08 million units, Douglas Insights estimates. It lifts the book-type share and the average price rather than flip volumes.

Apple sells into a different buyer. Samsung, Motorola and Google foldable owners already use Android, so their next foldable is a replacement; an iPhone owner who wanted a folding screen before 23 October 2026 had to leave iOS. Douglas Insights therefore counts most iPhone Duo units as new to the foldable category, which is why Apple supplies 5.10 of the 12.00 points in our unit leg.

Price is the second effect. At USD 1,999 for 256GB, the Duo sits USD 99.01 above the Galaxy Z Fold8 and USD 100.99 below the Fold8 Ultra, so it enters the top price tier directly. Our model holds U.S. realised prices rising 1.40% a year, against near-flat prices in the global model, because the Duo and the TriFold pull the mix upward faster than flip discounting pulls it down.

Samsung's response is the main uncertainty. Its U.S. share falls from 58.0% in 2025 to about 46% by 2027 on our estimates, yet its foldable revenue still edges up, to about USD 2.95 billion, because the whole U.S. market expands from USD 4.98 billion to about USD 6.42 billion over the same two years. Motorola is the least exposed: razr buyers pay USD 799.99 to USD 1,499.99, a band Apple does not enter.

## Which U.S. channels sell foldable phones: carriers, brand stores or retailers?

Carriers sell 58.0% of 2025 U.S. foldable value, USD 2.89 billion, because instalment plans and trade-in credits shrink a USD 1,899.99 sticker into a monthly bill. Retailers and e-commerce take 25.0%, USD 1.25 billion; brand stores 17.0%.

| Channel | Share 2025 | Value 2025 |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Carriers (postpaid and prepaid) | 58.0% | USD 2.89 billion |
| Retail and e-commerce | 25.0% | USD 1.25 billion |
| Brand online and physical stores | 17.0% | USD 846.6 million |

Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile carry the flagship book-types; prepaid brands such as Boost Mobile, Visible and Cricket carry flips. Best Buy and Amazon.com handle unlocked sales, and Samsung Experience Stores and Samsung.com were the only U.S. outlets for the TriFold at launch. Brand stores matter more for foldables than slab phones, because pre-order storage upgrades and bundles are sold there.

## Which U.S. rules shape foldable phones: FCC approval, state repair laws and tariff exclusions?

Three rule sets shape U.S. foldable smartphones: Federal Communications Commission ([FCC](https://www.fcc.gov/)) equipment authorisation, state right-to-repair laws led by Oregon, and the April 2025 tariff exclusion. Oregon's ban on parts pairing hits folding screens hardest.

Every handset needs FCC equipment authorisation before sale, and the FCC's Covered List keeps equipment from named Chinese suppliers out of authorisation, which is one reason Huawei foldables are absent from U.S. carriers. Repair law is moving faster at state level. Oregon's SB 1596 took effect on 1 January 2025 and bars parts pairing on equipment first manufactured and sold in the state after that date, so a maker may not block a working replacement display or reduce performance, with enforcement for violations from 1 July 2027, according to the [Oregon Legislature](https://www.oregonlegislature.gov/bills_laws/lawsstatutes/2024orLaw0069.pdf).

The Oregon act requires manufacturers to offer owners and independent shops the same parts, tools and documentation as authorised repairers, at no less favourable terms, with civil penalties of up to USD 1,000 a day. For foldables, whose inner display and hinge are the costliest parts, Douglas Insights expects repair rules to lower lifetime cost of ownership and slowly ease the 0.80-point repair restraint.

## What if Apple pulls slab-phone buyers into foldables: where does the U.S. foldable forecast land in 2035?

The U.S. foldable smartphone market ends 2035 between USD 10.79 billion and USD 26.16 billion across our three cases, around a base of USD 17.77 billion. iPhone Duo uptake and carrier promotion budgets set most of the spread.

| Case | Unit leg | Price leg | 2035 value |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Slower | 7.50% | 0.50% | USD 10.79 billion |
| Base case | 12.00% | 1.40% | USD 17.77 billion |
| Faster | 15.50% | 2.20% | USD 26.16 billion |

In the slower case the iPhone Duo stays a niche flagship, flips keep losing ground and the tariff exclusion lapses. In the faster case Apple adds a cheaper second-generation model, carriers fund larger trade-ins and tri-folds pass one in twenty U.S. foldable sales. One extra point of yearly unit growth adds USD 1.65 billion to the 2035 value; one point less removes USD 1.52 billion.

Our 13.57% sits above the 13.42% North America rate in the Douglas Insights global foldable model, because the United States carries the Apple effect while Canada and Mexico lean more on flips.

## Douglas Exclusive: the U.S. Foldable Launch and Carrier Ledger

The U.S. Foldable Launch and Carrier Ledger is a Douglas Insights model built from 9 U.S. list prices in 5 company releases and one news report. It records each foldable's U.S. list price, launch date and day-one channels.

| Model | Brand | U.S. list price | U.S. on-sale date | Day-one channels named |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Galaxy Z TriFold | Samsung | USD 2,899.00 | 30 January 2026 | Samsung stores and Samsung.com |
| Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra | Samsung | USD 2,099.99 | 7 August 2026 | AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, Amazon, Best Buy |
| iPhone Duo (256GB) | Apple | USD 1,999.00 | 23 October 2026 | Apple, USD 83.29 a month for 24 months |
| Galaxy Z Fold8 | Samsung | USD 1,899.99 | 7 August 2026 | AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, Amazon, Best Buy |
| Pixel 10 Pro Fold | Google | USD 1,799.00 | October 2025 | Google Store |
| razr ultra | Motorola | USD 1,499.99 | 21 May 2026 | Unlocked: Best Buy, Amazon, Motorola.com |
| Galaxy Z Flip8 | Samsung | USD 1,199.99 | 7 August 2026 | AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, Amazon, Best Buy |
| razr+ | Motorola | USD 1,099.99 | 21 May 2026 | AT&T and unlocked |
| razr | Motorola | USD 799.99 | 21 May 2026 | Eight carrier and prepaid brands |

The finding, a Douglas Insights estimate: the nine U.S. list prices average USD 1,700 with a median of USD 1,799, and our realised average of USD 1,310 equals 77.1% of that mean. The cheapest phone, the USD 799.99 razr, reached the most channels on day one, while the USD 2,899 TriFold reached only Samsung's own; price and carrier reach move in opposite directions, which is why flips carry 49% of U.S. foldable units but only 34.5% of value.

## How does the methodology turn 3.80 million U.S. foldables into USD 4.98 billion?

Our methodology multiplies 3.80 million U.S. foldable shipments in 2025 by a USD 1,310 average realised price to reach USD 4.98 billion. Units come from brand and form-factor builds; price comes from the launch ledger discounted to sell-through.

The model covers 4 Census regions, 2 form factors, 3 price tiers and 3 channels, and uses 58 data points, 17 sourced and 41 modelled. Arithmetic: 3.80 million x USD 1,310 = USD 4,980 million; 4,980 x (1.1200 x 1.0140)^10 = 17,774, or USD 17.77 billion. Units reach 11.81 million in 2035 and 4.26 million in 2026.

Two cross-checks agree. First, USD 4.98 billion is 87.1% of the North America row in our global foldable model, and USD 17.77 billion is 88.2% of its 2035 value. Second, Census-region values sum to USD 17.76 billion in 2035, within 0.1% of the total. Camera content in these phones is covered in our [Mobile Phone Camera Module Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/mobile-phone-camera-module-market/) study.

## What counts as a foldable smartphone in the U.S. market, and what is excluded?

The U.S. foldable smartphone market counts new handsets with a folding main display sold to U.S. buyers, valued at realised sell-through price including carrier and retailer discounts. Refurbished resale, accessories, [insurance](https://www.douglasinsights.com/insurance-market/) and wireless service plans stay out.

The by-form-factor split covers book-type and tri-fold models, and flip-type models. The by-price split covers under USD 1,000, USD 1,000 to 1,799, and USD 1,800 and above; the by-channel split covers carriers, retail and e-commerce, and brand stores. Folding tablets and laptops without cellular voice are excluded, as are the display materials sized in our [OLED Blue Light Emitting Materials Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/oled-blue-light-emitting-materials-market/) report.
