## Key takeaways

- The U.S. home care chemicals market is worth USD 5.52 billion in 2025 and USD 7.25 billion in 2035, a 2.77% revenue CAGR.
- Surfactants hold 42.5% of value, while enzymes grow fastest at 5.40% a year as cold-wash formulas spread.
- The South buys 37.5% of U.S. home care chemicals and grows fastest at 3.10% a year.
- Stepan raised surfactant prices 12% in Q2 2026 while P&G recovered about 1 point of Fabric and Home Care price in fiscal 2026.
- New York's 1 ppm 1,4-dioxane limit and Maine's 2026 PFAS ban make low-impurity ingredients a condition of sale.

Stepan raised its surfactant selling prices 12% in the second quarter of 2026, mainly to pass through higher raw material costs, and its Surfactants net sales rose 18% to USD 483.9 million, according to its [results of 29 July 2026](https://stepan.gcs-web.com/node/25751); the same day Procter & Gamble reported that its Fabric and Home Care organic sales were unchanged in the quarter. American detergent chemistry now costs more while the shelf price barely moves. The U.S. home care chemicals market covers the surfactants, builders and chelating agents, enzymes, polymers, solvents, bleaching agents, biocides and fragrance ingredients sold to makers of laundry, dishwashing, surface, toilet and air care products for use in the United States, valued at ingredient-supplier prices. Douglas Insights sizes it at USD 5.52 billion in 2025, from 3.30 million tonnes of ingredients at an average USD 1,672 a tonne, and at USD 7.25 billion in 2035, a revenue CAGR (compound annual growth rate) of 2.77%. The United States is 86.9% of North America in our global [Home Care Chemicals Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/home-care-chemicals-market/) report, the study sits in our [specialty chemicals coverage](https://www.douglasinsights.com/industry/chemicals-materials/specialty-chemicals/), and every figure follows the Douglas Insights [research methodology](https://www.douglasinsights.com/research-methodology/).

## Which U.S. home care chemical segment carries the most value: surfactants, builders, enzymes or polymers?

Surfactants carry the most U.S. home care chemical value, 42.5% of 2025 revenue, USD 2.35 billion. Enzymes grow fastest, 5.40% a year from USD 606.9 million to USD 1.03 billion by 2035.

| U.S. ingredient segment | Share 2025 | Value 2025 | CAGR 2026-2035 | Value 2035 |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Surfactants | 42.5% | USD 2.35 billion | 2.10% | USD 2.89 billion |
| Builders and chelating agents | 13.5% | USD 744.9 million | 1.60% | USD 873.0 million |
| Enzymes | 11.0% | USD 606.9 million | 5.40% | USD 1.03 billion |
| Polymers and rheology modifiers | 9.5% | USD 524.2 million | 3.20% | USD 718.2 million |
| Bleaching agents and biocides | 8.5% | USD 469.0 million | 2.40% | USD 594.5 million |
| Solvents | 7.5% | USD 413.8 million | 1.80% | USD 494.6 million |
| Fragrance ingredients | 7.5% | USD 413.8 million | 3.30% | USD 572.6 million |

Surfactants, USD 2.35 billion, lead because every U.S. laundry liquid, pod and dish soap needs anionic and nonionic surfactants such as linear alkylbenzene sulfonate (LAS), alcohol ethoxylates and sodium laureth sulfate to lift soil. They grow only 2.10% a year because concentrated liquids and pods use less surfactant per load. Builders and chelating agents, USD 744.9 million, grow 1.60% a year: phosphate-free formulas switched to citrates, carbonates and chelates such as methylglycinediacetic acid (MGDA) years ago, so the category now tracks volume.

Enzymes, USD 606.9 million, grow fastest, 5.40% a year, because protease, amylase and lipase let a cold-water wash clean as well as a hot one, and every gram of enzyme replaces several grams of surfactant in a premium U.S. home care formula. Polymers and rheology modifiers, USD 524.2 million, grow 3.20% a year on anti-redeposition and soil-release polymers in liquids and pods. Bleaching agents and biocides, USD 469.0 million, and solvents, USD 413.8 million, grow 2.40% and 1.80%. Fragrance ingredients, USD 413.8 million, grow 3.30% a year as scent boosters and premium laundry lines add fragrance. Segment values for 2035 sum to USD 7.17 billion, 1.16% below the headline.

By application, Douglas Insights estimates that laundry takes about 52% of 2025 U.S. home care chemical value, dishwashing about 17%, surface cleaners about 16%, air care about 8% and toilet cleaners about 7%. Laundry dominates because a U.S. household runs several loads a week, and detergent makers buy the highest-value enzymes and polymers for it.

## Why does U.S. home care chemical volume rise 1.30% a year?

U.S. home care chemical volume rises 1.30% a year, from 3.30 million tonnes in 2025 to 3.75 million in 2035. Five drivers add 1.90 points; household growth supplies 0.60 points and premium laundry formats 0.45.

### More households and more loads: 0.60 points

Household growth adds 0.60 points. More U.S. households, especially in the Sun Belt, mean more washing machines, dishwashers and cleaning cupboards to fill. Douglas Insights ties this leg to population and household formation rather than to brand sales, because brand volumes swing with promotions.

### Premium laundry formats: 0.45 points

Pods, scent boosters and premium liquids add 0.45 points. They carry more enzymes, polymers and fragrance per load than a basic liquid, so ingredient tonnage per dollar of shelf sales rises in the U.S. home care chemicals mix even when unit volumes are flat.

### Hygiene and disinfection habits: 0.35 points

Disinfecting wipes, sprays and toilet cleaners add 0.35 points. Clorox, the largest U.S. bleach brand owner, reported fiscal 2026 Health and Wellness net sales of USD 2.70 billion, flat on a year earlier, in its [results of 3 August 2026](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/0000021076/000002107626000028/ex991-pressreleasedatedaug.htm); demand has settled at a level above the years before 2020.

### Reformulation for state chemical rules: 0.30 points

Reformulation adds 0.30 points. New York's 1 ppm limit on 1,4-dioxane and Maine's ban on intentionally added PFAS in cleaning products push U.S. formulators toward cleaner ethoxylates, alternative wetting agents and new polymers, and each reformulation buys fresh ingredient volume.

### Online and concentrated refills: 0.20 points

Refill and subscription channels add 0.20 points, as concentrates sold online carry more active chemistry per kilogram shipped. The five contributions, 0.60 + 0.45 + 0.35 + 0.30 + 0.20, give 1.90 points before restraints.

## What holds back U.S. home care chemical demand: compaction, flat brand volumes or raw material costs?

Compaction and flat brand volumes remove 0.60 points from U.S. home care chemical volume growth, leaving 1.30% a year. Compaction takes 0.35 points; flat or falling brand volumes and private-label switching take 0.25.

Compaction is the structural brake. A U.S. laundry pod or 2x liquid delivers the same clean with less water and less filler, and enzymes replace surfactant tonnes, so ingredient volume grows slower than the number of loads washed. Douglas Insights removes 0.35 points for this, the largest single restraint on U.S. home care chemicals.

Brand volumes remove 0.25 points. Procter & Gamble reported fiscal 2026 Fabric and Home Care net sales of USD 30.3 billion, up 2%, with volume flat and price up 1%, and said Home Care organic sales fell by a low single digit in the fourth quarter on lower volume, primarily in North America, according to its [results of 29 July 2026](https://us.pg.com/newsroom/news-releases/PG-Announces-Fourth-Quarter-and-Fiscal-Year-2026-Results/). When the largest brand owner sells flat volume, ingredient suppliers cannot grow on tonnage alone.

Raw material costs are the third pressure, on margin rather than volume. Procter & Gamble expects an after-tax headwind of about USD 1 billion in fiscal 2027 from higher raw materials, energy and transportation, in the same release, and Clorox's gross margin fell 290 basis points to 42.3% in fiscal 2026, its [filing](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/0000021076/000002107626000028/ex991-pressreleasedatedaug.htm) shows. Brand owners under that squeeze push U.S. home care chemical suppliers for cheaper grades and longer contracts.

## Where in the United States do home care chemicals sell most, and why does the South lead?

The South buys the most U.S. home care chemicals, USD 2.07 billion or 37.5% of 2025 value, and grows fastest, 3.10% a year to USD 2.81 billion by 2035, because Texas, Florida and the Carolinas add households fastest.

| Census region | Value 2025 | Share 2025 | Value 2026 | CAGR 2026-2035 | Value 2035 |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| South | USD 2.07 billion | 37.5% | USD 2.13 billion | 3.10% | USD 2.81 billion |
| West | USD 1.27 billion | 23.0% | USD 1.31 billion | 2.90% | USD 1.69 billion |
| Midwest | USD 1.19 billion | 21.5% | USD 1.21 billion | 2.40% | USD 1.50 billion |
| Northeast | USD 993.2 million | 18.0% | USD 1.02 billion | 2.45% | USD 1.27 billion |

The South, USD 2.07 billion, holds the largest population and the fastest household formation, and the Gulf Coast also hosts the ethylene oxide, alcohol and alkylbenzene plants that feed U.S. surfactant chains, so home care ingredient logistics are shortest there. The West, USD 1.27 billion, grows 2.90% a year; California's cleaning product ingredient disclosure rules make it the first U.S. market where reformulated, fully disclosed formulas must ship.

The Midwest, USD 1.19 billion, grows 2.40% a year on slow household growth, though Stepan's home base in Illinois and large detergent plants in Ohio keep it a production hub. The Northeast, USD 993.2 million, grows 2.45% a year; New York's 1,4-dioxane limits, which apply to every product sold in the state, mean Northeast shelves carry the most reformulated U.S. home care products. Regional values for 2035 sum to USD 7.27 billion, 0.21% above the headline; in the data table the row labelled Global holds the U.S. total, USD 5.52 billion in 2025.

## Who supplies U.S. home care chemicals: Stepan, Dow, BASF or Novonesis?

Stepan supplies the most U.S. home care chemical value, about 8.5% of 2025 revenue, USD 469.0 million, Douglas Insights estimates. The top five suppliers hold about 30.5%, so the supplier base stays fragmented.

| Company | What the position rests on | Estimated U.S. share 2025 | Estimated value 2025 |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Stepan | Sulfonated and ethoxylated surfactants for laundry and dish brands | 8.5% | USD 469.0 million |
| Dow | Ethoxylates, glycol ether solvents, acrylic dispersant polymers | 7.0% | USD 386.2 million |
| BASF | Nonionic surfactants, MGDA chelates and dispersant polymers | 6.0% | USD 331.1 million |
| Novonesis | Protease, amylase and lipase detergent enzymes | 5.5% | USD 303.5 million |
| Sasol | Detergent alcohols and alkylbenzene from Lake Charles, Louisiana | 3.5% | USD 193.1 million |
| Nouryon, IFF, Croda, Evonik and others | Chelates, fragrance, specialty surfactants and polymers | 69.5% | USD 3.83 billion |

Stepan reported 2025 Surfactants net sales of USD 1.67 billion, up 9%, with volume down 1% on weaker commodity laundry and cleaning demand, according to its [fourth-quarter and full-year 2025 results](https://stepan.gcs-web.com/node/25421). Because that figure also covers agricultural, oilfield and personal care surfactants and sales outside the United States, its U.S. home care share is a Douglas Insights estimate. In 2026 Stepan said it plans to close its Fieldsboro, New Jersey site, in its [second-quarter release](https://stepan.gcs-web.com/node/25751).

Novonesis, formed by the merger of Novozymes and Chr. Hansen, reported Household Care growth of 7% in 2025 in its [full-year highlights](https://backend.novonesis.com/sites/default/files/document/2026-02/2026_01_12M%202025__Highlights.pdf), the clearest sign that enzymes outgrow surfactants. On the buying side, Procter & Gamble, Clorox, Church & Dwight, Henkel, Unilever, Colgate-Palmolive and SC Johnson set U.S. home care chemical specifications; Clorox expects its GOJO acquisition to add about 9.5 points to fiscal 2027 net sales, its [August 2026 release](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/0000021076/000002107626000028/ex991-pressreleasedatedaug.htm) says. The washing machines these formulas run in are sized in our [Smart Washing Machine Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/smart-washing-machine-market/) report.

## What do U.S. detergent makers pay per tonne of home care chemicals in 2026?

U.S. detergent makers paid an average USD 1,672 a tonne for home care chemicals in 2025, Douglas Insights estimates, from about USD 1,300 for commodity surfactants to over USD 6,000 for liquid enzymes.

| Ingredient group | Typical U.S. price band 2025 | Direction in 2026 |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Commodity anionic surfactants (LAS, SLES) | About USD 1,300 to USD 2,100 a tonne | Up, raw material pass-through |
| Nonionic ethoxylates | About USD 1,600 to USD 2,400 a tonne | Up with ethylene oxide |
| Chelates and builders | About USD 800 to USD 2,200 a tonne | Stable |
| Liquid detergent enzymes | About USD 6,000 to USD 14,000 a tonne | Stable to up |
| Douglas Insights U.S. average | USD 1,672 a tonne | USD 1,696 in 2026 on trend |

Price bands are Douglas Insights estimates built from supplier disclosures and the ingredient mix. Stepan's 12% surfactant price rise in the second quarter of 2026, reported in its [29 July 2026 release](https://stepan.gcs-web.com/node/25751), shows how fast feedstock costs pass into U.S. home care chemical prices, because surfactants are made from oil, natural gas liquids and palm or coconut oils that move daily.

Douglas Insights projects the U.S. average at USD 1,696 a tonne in 2026 and USD 1,931 by 2035, a 1.45% yearly rise driven by the shift to enzymes and polymers rather than by commodity inflation, which reverses as oil prices fall. A tonne of enzyme formulation costs four to seven times a tonne of LAS, so each point of mix shift lifts the average price.

## Which state and federal rules shape U.S. home care chemical formulations?

Three rule sets shape U.S. home care chemicals: New York's 1 ppm 1,4-dioxane limit with no waivers after 30 December 2025, Maine's 2026 ban on PFAS in cleaning products, and federal Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) reviews.

New York's Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) set a 2 ppm limit on 1,4-dioxane in household cleansing products from 31 December 2022 and 1 ppm from 31 December 2023, and no waiver is effective after 30 December 2025, according to the [DEC](https://dec.ny.gov/environmental-protection/pollution-prevention/household-personal-cosmetic-dioxane-limits). 1,4-dioxane is a by-product of ethoxylation, so ethoxylated surfactant makers have added vacuum stripping and tighter process control to sell into the state.

Maine prohibits the sale of cleaning products with intentionally added PFAS from 1 January 2026, with air care and automotive maintenance products counted as cleaning products, and extends the ban to almost all products in 2032 unless a use is currently unavoidable, according to the [Maine Department of Environmental Protection](https://www.maine.gov/dep/spills/topics/pfas/PFAS-products/). PFAS-based wetting agents in floor and surface cleaners must be replaced with silicone or hydrocarbon surfactants for U.S. home care formulas sold in Maine.

At federal level, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) completed its TSCA risk evaluation of 1,4-dioxane in late 2024, according to the [EPA announcement](https://19january2025snapshot.epa.gov/chemicals-under-tsca/epa-releases-final-risk-evaluation-14-dioxane), which keeps the by-product under review for consumer detergents, and EPA's Safer Choice label rewards ingredients that pass its criteria. Together these rules make documented, low-impurity ingredients a condition of selling U.S. home care chemicals to national brands.

## What if raw material costs stay high or enzymes replace surfactants faster: where do U.S. home care chemicals land in 2035?

The U.S. home care chemicals market ends 2035 between USD 6.34 billion and USD 8.12 billion across our three cases, around a base of USD 7.25 billion. Compaction speed and ingredient mix set the spread.

| Case | Volume leg | Price per tonne leg | 2035 value |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Slower | 0.50% | 0.90% | USD 6.34 billion |
| Base case | 1.30% | 1.45% | USD 7.25 billion |
| Faster | 2.00% | 1.90% | USD 8.12 billion |

In the slower case U.S. households trade down to private-label liquids, compaction accelerates and brand owners force price cuts on surfactant suppliers. In the faster case premium pods, enzymes and reformulated disinfectants grow quickly and household formation stays strong in the South and West. One extra point of yearly volume growth adds USD 748.4 million to 2035 U.S. home care chemical value; one point less removes USD 684.8 million.

Our 2.77% sits below the 2.96% North America rate and the 3.83% global rate in the Douglas Insights global model, because U.S. households already buy concentrated formats and growth comes from mix rather than first-time detergent users.

## Douglas Exclusive: the U.S. Home Care Cost Pass-Through Ledger

The U.S. Home Care Cost Pass-Through Ledger is a Douglas Insights model built from 9 sourced inputs taken from 3 company filings and releases, comparing what ingredient suppliers charged in 2026 with what brand owners recovered at the shelf.

| Date | Input | Figure |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 29 July 2026 | Stepan surfactant selling prices, Q2 2026 | +12% |
| 29 July 2026 | Stepan surfactant volume, global and organic, Q2 2026 | +2% and +7% |
| 29 July 2026 | P&G Fabric and Home Care price and volume, fiscal 2026 | +1% and flat |
| 29 July 2026 | P&G Fabric and Home Care organic sales, Q4 fiscal 2026 | Unchanged |
| 29 July 2026 | P&G fiscal 2027 cost headwind, after tax | About USD 1 billion |
| 3 August 2026 | Clorox gross margin, fiscal 2026 | 45.2% to 42.3% |
| 3 August 2026 | Clorox Health and Wellness net sales and organic sales | Flat and -8% |

The finding, a Douglas Insights estimate: if surfactants, 42.5% of U.S. home care chemical value, rise 12% while other ingredients hold flat, the blended U.S. ingredient bill rises about 5.1%, or about USD 281 million on 2025 value. Brand owners recovered about 1 point of price in fiscal 2026, as the [P&G](https://us.pg.com/newsroom/news-releases/PG-Announces-Fourth-Quarter-and-Fiscal-Year-2026-Results/) and [Clorox](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/0000021076/000002107626000028/ex991-pressreleasedatedaug.htm) releases show, so most of the 2026 chemical cost sat on their margins. Douglas Insights expects that gap to drive two things through 2027: shelf price rises, and faster substitution of enzymes for surfactant tonnes, which is why our enzyme CAGR of 5.40% is more than double the surfactant rate.

## How does the methodology turn 3.30 million tonnes into USD 5.52 billion of U.S. home care chemicals?

Our methodology multiplies 3.30 million tonnes of U.S. home care chemical ingredients in 2025 by an average USD 1,672 a tonne to reach USD 5.52 billion. Tonnes come from household cleaning demand; prices from supplier disclosures.

The model covers 4 Census regions, 7 ingredient groups and 5 applications, and uses 58 data points, 12 sourced and 46 modelled. Arithmetic: 3.30 million x USD 1,672 = USD 5.52 billion; 5.518 x (1.0130 x 1.0145)^10 = 7.251, or USD 7.25 billion. Tonnes reach 3.34 million in 2026 and 3.75 million in 2035; price per tonne reaches USD 1,696 in 2026.

Two cross-checks agree. First, USD 5.52 billion is 86.9% of the USD 6.35 billion North America row in our global home care chemicals model, leaving USD 829 million for Canada and Mexico. Second, ingredients worth USD 5.52 billion equal about 18% of Procter & Gamble's USD 30.3 billion global Fabric and Home Care sales, a plausible raw material share for the whole U.S. market across all brands. AI tools help draft the text and automated checks test the arithmetic and links; the Douglas Insights research desk chooses the sources, builds the model and approves publication, as our [editorial standards](https://www.douglasinsights.com/research-methodology/) explain.

## What does the U.S. home care chemicals market include, and what is left out?

The U.S. home care chemicals market includes ingredient sales of surfactants, builders, chelates, enzymes, polymers, solvents, bleaches, biocides and fragrance for household cleaning products sold in the United States. Finished products, packaging and industrial cleaning stay out.

The by-ingredient split covers the seven groups above; the by-application split covers laundry, dishwashing, surface cleaners, toilet cleaners and air care; the by-region split covers the South, West, Midwest and Northeast. Institutional and industrial cleaning chemicals sold to hospitals, restaurants and laundries, personal care cleansers and the brand owners' retail sales are excluded; the commercial laundry service side is covered in our [Dry Cleaning and Laundry Service Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/dry-cleaning-and-laundry-service-market/) report. Values are at ingredient-supplier prices delivered to U.S. formulators, including imports.
