- Goodyear's 18-inch-and-above share of volume rose to 44% from 39% in a year, its 4 November 2026 results show.

Continental said 18-inch and larger tyres made up 62% of its Continental-brand passenger car tyre sales in 2025, up from 60%, and its Tires unit earned a 13.6% adjusted margin on EUR 13.8 billion of sales, its [fiscal 2025 release of 4 March 2026](https://www.continental.com/en/press/press-releases/20260304-fiscal-year-2025) states. The ultra high performance (UHP) tire market covers passenger car and sport utility vehicle (SUV) tyres on rims of 18 inches and above with speed ratings of V and higher, sold to carmakers as original equipment (OE) and to drivers as replacements. Douglas Insights sizes it at USD 65.0 billion in 2025, about 365 million tyres at an average USD 178 each, and at USD 119.2 billion in 2035, a 6.26% compound annual growth rate (CAGR). The study sits in our [tyres and wheels coverage](https://www.douglasinsights.com/industry/tyres-wheels/), beside the [Automotive Steering System Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/automotive-steering-system-market/), [Tyre Pyrolysis Recycling Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/tyre-pyrolysis-recycling-market/) and [Electric Vehicles Polymers Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/electric-vehicles-polymers-market/) reports; every figure follows the Douglas Insights [research methodology](https://www.douglasinsights.com/research-methodology/).

## Which rim size earns the most UHP tyre revenue: 18, 19, 20 or 21 inches?

The 18-inch size earns the most, 44.0% of 2025 UHP tyre revenue or about USD 28.6 billion, Douglas Insights estimates, but 21-inch and larger fitments grow fastest, 8.6% a year to USD 16.3 billion by 2035.

| Rim size | Share 2025 | Value 2025 | CAGR 2026-2035 | Value 2035 |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 18-inch | 44.0% | USD 28.6 billion | 4.3% | USD 43.6 billion |
| 19-inch | 27.0% | USD 17.5 billion | 7.0% | USD 34.5 billion |
| 20-inch | 18.0% | USD 11.7 billion | 8.2% | USD 25.7 billion |
| 21-inch and above | 11.0% | USD 7.15 billion | 8.6% | USD 16.3 billion |

The 18-inch size leads because it is now the entry rim on most compact SUVs and mid-size saloons, so it sells in the largest numbers to replacement drivers. Goodyear said "18" and above products represent 44% of sales volumes, up from 39% a year ago" in its [third-quarter 2026 results of 4 November 2026](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/0000042582/000162828026070193/q32026nrearningsrelease_dr.htm), a 5-point gain in one year. The 18-inch block still grows only 4.3% a year to USD 43.6 billion, a Douglas Insights estimate, because new cars are moving one or two sizes higher.

The 19-inch size, USD 17.5 billion, grows 7.0% a year to USD 34.5 billion. Pirelli said about 90% of the roughly 200 new homologations it won in the first half of 2026 were for rim sizes of 19 inches and above, its [half-year report of 29 July 2026](https://www.emarketstorage.it/sites/default/files/comunicati/2026-07/20260729_187398.pdf) shows. The 20-inch size, USD 11.7 billion, grows 8.2% on premium SUVs and electric crossovers, and 21-inch and above, USD 7.15 billion, grows 8.6% on performance and luxury cars. Rim size values for 2035 sum to USD 120.1 billion, 0.71% above the headline.

## Who buys UHP tyres: replacement drivers, SUV owners or electric carmakers?

Replacement buyers of passenger car tyres take the largest share, 38.0% of 2025 UHP revenue or about USD 24.7 billion, Douglas Insights estimates. Original equipment for electric vehicles (EVs) grows fastest, 11.0% a year to USD 22.1 billion by 2035.

| Channel | Share 2025 | Value 2025 | CAGR 2026-2035 | Value 2035 |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Replacement, passenger cars | 38.0% | USD 24.7 billion | 4.9% | USD 39.8 billion |
| Replacement, SUVs and crossovers | 30.0% | USD 19.5 billion | 7.0% | USD 38.3 billion |
| Original equipment, combustion and hybrid cars | 20.0% | USD 13.0 billion | 4.0% | USD 19.2 billion |
| Original equipment, electric vehicles | 12.0% | USD 7.80 billion | 11.0% | USD 22.1 billion |

Replacement leads because a car on 18-inch wheels needs two or three new sets over its life, while it gets only one OE set. Michelin estimates world passenger car and light truck replacement tyre markets grew 1% in 2025 while OE grew 2%, with China OE up 9% and Europe OE down 5%, its [2025 annual results of 11 February 2026](https://ml-eu.globenewswire.com/Resource/Download/0b712fdf-c218-46c4-83ad-9183386ca895) show. Passenger car replacement revenue grows 4.9% a year to USD 39.8 billion, a Douglas Insights estimate.

SUV and crossover replacement, USD 19.5 billion, grows 7.0% to USD 38.3 billion as the large SUV fleet sold since 2018 comes due for second and third sets. OE fitments for petrol, diesel and hybrid cars, USD 13.0 billion, grow 4.0%. OE fitments for EVs, USD 7.80 billion, grow 11.0% because about 20 million electric cars were sold in 2025, one in four new cars, the International Energy Agency (IEA) [Global EV Outlook 2026](https://iea.blob.core.windows.net/assets/8995fa9b-3808-4440-ae33-b32f4f240adb/GEVO-2026_Webinar-28-forPDF.pdf) of May 2026 shows. Channel values for 2035 sum to USD 119.5 billion, 0.26% above the headline.

## What drives UHP tyre demand: bigger rims, electric cars or the SUV replacement wave?

UHP tyre revenue rises 6.26% a year in our base case: unit volume grows 5.0% a year, from about 365 million to about 595 million tyres, and price rises 1.2%. Four drivers add 6.20 points of volume; restraints remove 1.20.

### Rim inflation on new cars: 2.00 points

Larger wheels on new cars are the largest driver, worth 2.00 points. Carmakers built 96.4 million vehicles in 2025, up 3.9% from 92.7 million, the International Organization of Motor Vehicle Manufacturers (OICA) [reported on 23 April 2026](https://oica.net/auto-industry-growth-shifted-east-in-2025-amid-global-repositioning/), and a rising share leave the line on 18-inch or larger rims. Pirelli's car volumes of 18 inches and above grew 7% in 2025 against a market up 6%, while its 17-inch and smaller volumes fell 11% against a market down 1%, its [2025 preliminary results of 25 February 2026](https://press.pirelli.com/download/557cbb96-f5f5-46a1-a6d2-947fccbe6ff5/cspirelli_risultatipreliminari2025_25febbraio2026_eng_cda.pdf) show. Hankook lifted its 18-inch-and-larger share of passenger and light truck tyre sales to 49.5% in the second quarter of 2026, from 47.8% for 2025, its [results of 11 August 2026](https://www.hankooktire.com/us/en/company/media-center/media-detail.633715.html) state.

### Electric vehicles: 1.60 points

EVs add 1.60 points. The IEA expects about 23 million electric car sales in 2026 after about 20 million in 2025, and public charging points passed 7 million at the end of 2025 after 1.8 million were added in the year, its [Global EV Outlook 2026](https://www.iea.org/reports/global-ev-outlook-2026/electric-vehicle-charging-chap-6-and-10) shows. An electric crossover weighs 300 to 500 kg more than its petrol twin, so carmakers specify reinforced, high-load UHP tyres on 19-inch to 21-inch rims, and those tyres wear 10% to 20% faster, Douglas Insights estimates. EVs take about 12.0% of UHP revenue in 2025 and about 18.6% by 2035 in our model.

### SUV replacement wave: 1.80 points

The replacement cycle adds 1.80 points. Consumer replacement tyre sales in Europe rose 2% in the first half of 2026 and 3% in the second quarter, after falling 2% in 2025, Tyres Europe, the former European Tyre and Rubber Manufacturers' Association (ETRMA), [reported on 5 August 2026](https://tyreseurope.org/replacement-tyre-market-recovery-broadens-q2-2026/). MICHELIN-brand replacement volumes rose 4% in the first nine months of 2026 and the brand "overperformed in 18-inch and larger tires", Michelin's [nine-month release of 20 October 2026](https://www.michelin.com/en/publications/group/financial-information-at-september-30-2026) states. Douglas Insights estimates SUVs and crossovers sold since 2018 now account for more than 40% of the world's cars that run on 18-inch or larger rims.

### China's premium OE build: 0.80 points

China adds the last 0.80 points. The country built 34.53 million vehicles in 2025, the [OICA release of 23 April 2026](https://oica.net/auto-industry-growth-shifted-east-in-2025-amid-global-repositioning/) shows, and Michelin put China's 2025 OE passenger tyre market up 9%. Chinese brands such as BYD and Geely fit 19-inch and 20-inch tyres on mid-priced electric SUVs, a shift that pulls rim sizes up faster than in Europe, a Douglas Insights estimate. Summed, 2.00 + 1.60 + 1.80 + 0.80 = 6.20 points.

## What holds UHP tyre growth back: flat car tyre demand, trading down or cheap imports?

Three restraints remove 1.20 points a year from UHP tyre volume growth: weak overall car tyre demand takes 0.60 points, drivers trading down to cheaper brands 0.30 points and low-priced Asian imports 0.30 points.

Weak overall demand is the heaviest drag because UHP sizes cannot grow far faster than the car parc that uses them. Pirelli now sees global car tyre demand falling 1% to 3% in 2026 and cut its own volume guidance to about 0% to 1% from 1% to 2%, its [29 July 2026 report](https://www.emarketstorage.it/sites/default/files/comunicati/2026-07/20260729_187398.pdf) shows. The US Tire Manufacturers Association (USTMA) cut its 2026 shipment forecast to 330.3 million units from 338.9 million, with passenger replacement at 218.3 million against 221.9 million in 2025, its [forecast of 6 August 2026](https://www.ustires.org/newsroom/ustma-july-2026-forecast) shows.

Trading down takes 0.30 points. Goodyear's third-quarter 2026 replacement units fell 2.2% in the Americas, 11.3% in Europe, the Middle East and Africa and 8.2% in Asia Pacific, the [4 November 2026 release](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/0000042582/000162828026070193/q32026nrearningsrelease_dr.htm) shows, and Michelin's 2025 tyre volumes fell 4.7%, its [annual release of 11 February 2026](https://www.michelin.com/en/publications/group/financial-information-december-31-2025) states. Asian imports take the final 0.30 points: budget brands now sell 18-inch and 19-inch sizes at 30% to 50% below premium prices, a Douglas Insights estimate.

## Which region buys the most UHP tyres, and where does demand grow fastest?

Europe buys the most UHP tyres, USD 20.8 billion or 32.0% of 2025 revenue, on its premium car fleet. Asia Pacific grows fastest, 7.9% a year to USD 43.1 billion by 2035, and becomes the largest region.

| Region | Value 2025 | Share 2025 | Value 2026 | CAGR 2026-2035 | Value 2035 |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Europe | USD 20.8 billion | 32.0% | USD 21.9 billion | 5.2% | USD 34.5 billion |
| North America | USD 18.2 billion | 28.0% | USD 19.2 billion | 5.6% | USD 31.4 billion |
| Asia Pacific | USD 20.1 billion | 31.0% | USD 21.7 billion | 7.9% | USD 43.1 billion |
| Middle East and Africa | USD 3.25 billion | 5.0% | USD 3.48 billion | 7.0% | USD 6.39 billion |
| Latin America | USD 2.60 billion | 4.0% | USD 2.76 billion | 6.3% | USD 4.79 billion |

Europe leads because German, Italian and British premium cars set UHP fitments, and winter and all-season sizes double the sets many drivers buy. Tyres Europe said consumer replacement sales were "2% down" in 2025, its [release of 5 February 2026](https://tyreseurope.org/replacement-markets-were-weak-q4-full-year-2025/) states, and Michelin put Europe's 2025 OE market down 5%. European revenue still grows 5.2% a year to USD 34.5 billion, a Douglas Insights estimate, as the mix keeps moving to 19 inches and above.

Asia Pacific, USD 20.1 billion, grows 7.9% on Chinese premium electric SUVs and on Korean and Japanese makers; Hankook's tyre business grew 9.6% to KRW 10.32 trillion in 2025, its [release of 4 February 2026](https://www.hankooktire-mediacenter.com/press-release/news/hankook-reports-2025-revenue-of-eur-1319-billion-and-operating-profit-of-eur-115-billion) shows. North America, USD 18.2 billion, grows 5.6% on pickups and SUVs; US shipments were 336.3 million units in 2025, the [USTMA said on 4 March 2026](https://www.ustires.org/newsroom/ustma-february-2026-forecast). The Middle East and Africa, USD 3.25 billion, grow 7.0% on Gulf luxury SUVs, and Latin America, USD 2.60 billion, grows 6.3%. Regional values sum to USD 69.1 billion in 2026 and USD 120.1 billion in 2035, 0.76% above the headline.

## Which companies lead UHP tyre supply?

Michelin leads UHP tyre supply with about 16% of revenue, Douglas Insights estimates; the five largest, Michelin, Bridgestone, Continental, Pirelli and Goodyear, hold about 56% together.

| Company | Latest reported figure | Period and source date |

| Yokohama | Revenue JPY 1.24 trillion, up 12.8% | Year 2025; 2 March 2026 |

Michelin said MICHELIN-brand and 18-inch and larger tyres made up 68% of total sales in 2025, up 3 points, while its Automotive and Two-wheel segment earned EUR 1.68 billion of operating income, 11.7% of EUR 14.3 billion of sales, its [11 February 2026 results](https://ml-eu.globenewswire.com/Resource/Download/0b712fdf-c218-46c4-83ad-9183386ca895) show. Bridgestone grew passenger and light truck revenue 1% to JPY 2.50 trillion on "firm sales of premium replacement tires (including high-rim diameter tires of 18 inches or more)", its [2025 results of 16 February 2026](https://www.bridgestone.com/ir/library/result/pdf/e_r7_4_results.pdf) state.

Pirelli is the most focused. High Value products, mostly 18 inches and above, made up 82% of its sales in the first half of 2026, up from 80%, while Standard volumes fell 8%, its [release of 29 July 2026](https://press.pirelli.com/pirelli-board-majority-approves-consolidated-results-to-30-june-2026/) states. Its board approved those accounts by majority, with three directors nominated by Sinochem voting against, and Camfin's slate won about 58.07% of votes at the [25 June 2026 shareholders' meeting](https://press.pirelli.com/pirelli--c-spa-shareholders-meeting-held-2026-06-25/), a governance split buyers watch.

Challengers gain share. Sumitomo Rubber bought Goodyear's Dunlop brand rights for Europe, North America and Oceania for USD 735 million gross, closed on 7 May 2025, Goodyear's [SEC filing](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/42582/000119312525114964/d947587dex992.htm) shows, and its premium tyre ratio rose 1 point to 47% in 2025, its [results presentation of 12 February 2026](https://d154tv7bxfldub.cloudfront.net/english/ir/library/financial-report/dvql4p00000qekrk-att/scripts_2025_end_en.pdf) shows. Yokohama grew 2025 revenue 12.8% to JPY 1.24 trillion on ADVAN and large-diameter tyres, its [release of 2 March 2026](https://www.yokohama.eu/de/media/the-yokohama-rubber-co-achieves-fifth-consecutive-year-of-sales-and-profit-growth-in-2025-reaching-record-highs-in-both-indicators/) states.

## How much does a UHP tyre cost, from an 18-inch touring tyre to a 21-inch supercar fitment?

A UHP tyre sells for an average USD 178 at the maker's gate in 2025, Douglas Insights estimates, from about USD 75 for a budget 18-inch tyre to USD 600 or more for a 21-inch supercar fitment.

The average hides a steep price ladder. Douglas Insights puts budget 18-inch tyres at USD 75 to USD 120, premium 18-inch tyres at USD 140 to USD 230, 19-inch and 20-inch premium sizes at USD 200 to USD 380 and 21-inch and larger homologated fitments at USD 350 to USD 700. Retail prices run about 35% to 60% above these gate prices once dealer margin, fitting and tax are added, a Douglas Insights estimate.

Average price rises 1.2% a year in the base case, to about USD 201 in 2035, because larger sizes cost more to build and carry homologation premiums. Pirelli's price and mix added 3.8% to 2025 revenue and it guides 2.5% to 3% for 2026, its [half-year report](https://www.emarketstorage.it/sites/default/files/comunicati/2026-07/20260729_187398.pdf) shows, while Michelin's group price-mix added 1.1% in the first nine months of 2026, its [20 October 2026 release](https://www.michelin.com/en/publications/group/financial-information-at-september-30-2026) states. Like-for-like prices rise less than these mix figures because each size gets cheaper as it matures.

Trade measures add a cost floor. The European Union set definitive anti-dumping duties on Chinese passenger car and light truck tyres in Implementing Regulation (EU) [2026/1540](https://eur-lex.europa.eu/eli/reg/2026/1540/oj), in force from 8 July 2026 for five years. In the United States, Proclamation 10908 of 26 March 2025 put 25% Section 232 duties on [automobiles and listed automobile parts](https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2025/04/03/2025-05930/adjusting-imports-of-automobiles-and-automobile-parts-into-the-united-states) from 3 May 2025 for parts, and the Supreme Court ruled on [20 February 2026](https://www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/25pdf/24-1287_4gcj.pdf) that emergency-powers tariffs were not authorised, which left Section 232 duties standing.

## What if electric SUVs scale faster or car output stalls: how large is the UHP tyre market in 2035?

The UHP tyre market ends 2035 between USD 102.1 billion and USD 139.1 billion across our three cases, around a base of USD 119.2 billion. EV adoption and the pace of rim inflation set most of the spread.

| Case | Volume leg | Price leg | Revenue rate | 2035 value |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Slower | 4.00% | 0.60% | 4.62% | USD 102.1 billion |
| Base case | 5.00% | 1.20% | 6.26% | USD 119.2 billion |
| Faster | 6.00% | 1.80% | 7.91% | USD 139.1 billion |

In the slower case global car output stays near 96 million vehicles, the rim mix gains only half a point a year and budget brands take more 18-inch replacement demand, taking 1.0 point off volume and 0.6 points off price. In the faster case EVs reach about 40% of new car sales by 2032 and 20-inch rims become standard on mid-size SUVs, adding 1.0 point of volume and 0.6 points of price. One extra point of yearly revenue growth adds about USD 11.7 billion to 2035 revenue, a Douglas Insights estimate.

Live signals sit close to the base case. Goodyear's 18-inch-and-above volume share rose 5 points in a year, Hankook's rose 1.7 points in six months and Continental lifted its full-year outlook on 4 November 2026, all pointing up. Pirelli's cut to global car tyre demand and the lower USTMA forecast point down. Our 6.26% rate weighs strong mix gains against flat tyre volumes.

## Which rules shape UHP tyre design, from Euro 7 abrasion limits to the EU tyre label?

Three rule sets shape UHP tyre design: the Euro 7 tyre abrasion limits in Regulation (EU) 2024/1257, the EU tyre label in Regulation (EU) 2020/740, and the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) for natural rubber.

Abrasion is the rule that matters most for UHP tyres, which use soft, high-grip compounds. Article 11 of [Regulation (EU) 2024/1257](https://eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-content/EN/TXT/HTML/?uri=OJ:L_202401257) applies abrasion limits to new C1 passenger car tyre types from 1 July 2028 and to all C1 tyres sold from 1 July 2030, with van and truck tyres following in 2030 and 2032. Makers must cut wear without losing wet grip, which raises compound and silica costs, a Douglas Insights estimate.

The tyre label, applied since 1 May 2021, grades rolling resistance, wet grip and noise from A to E, and UHP tyres usually trade a class of rolling resistance for an A in wet grip. The EUDR, moved by Regulation (EU) 2025/2650 to apply from 30 December 2026 for large and medium operators, the European Commission [states](https://trade.ec.europa.eu/access-to-markets/en/news/delay-until-december-2026-and-other-developments-implementation-eudr-regulation), requires proof that natural rubber does not come from land deforested after 2020, which adds traceability cost to every premium tyre sold in Europe.

## Douglas Exclusive: the Rim Inch Migration Index

The Rim Inch Migration Index is a Douglas Insights model built from 12 inputs, 9 company filings and 3 industry statistics listed below. It measures how fast tyre demand moves to rims of 18 inches and above.

| Date | Input | What it moves |

The finding, a Douglas Insights estimate: tyres of 18 inches and above make up about 21% of the roughly 1.75 billion passenger and light truck tyres sold in 2025 and about 31% of about 1.92 billion in 2035, so the share gains about 1 point a year. The average UHP rim rises from about 18.9 inches to about 19.4 inches over the decade, and each extra inch lifts the gate price by about 12% to 18%.

The index changes how to read the market. Mix shift explains about 4.1 of the 5.0 points of yearly UHP volume growth, so UHP revenue can rise even when total tyre shipments fall, as they did for Michelin in 2025. Douglas Insights therefore weights rim mix data from Goodyear, Continental, Hankook and Pirelli about twice as heavily as overall tyre shipments in the forecast.

## How does the methodology turn 365 million tyres into USD 65.0 billion?

Our methodology multiplies about 365 million UHP tyres sold in 2025 by an average USD 178 each to reach USD 65.0 billion, then grows units 5.0% and price 1.2% a year.

The model covers 4 rim sizes, 4 channels and 5 regions, using 58 data points, 24 sourced and 34 modelled. Units come from vehicle production and the car parc multiplied by rim mix and tyre life; prices come from company filings and Douglas Insights price ladders. Arithmetic: 365 million x USD 178 = USD 65.0 billion; USD 65.0 billion x (1.050 x 1.012)^10 = USD 119.2 billion. Units reach about 595 million in 2035.

Two cross-checks agree. First, the five largest makers earn about USD 36 billion from UHP tyres in our estimate, about 56% of the total, consistent with their filed passenger tyre sales and disclosed 18-inch shares. Second, our 365 million units equal about 21% of world passenger and light truck tyre demand, between Goodyear's 44% and the far lower shares of budget makers. Currency conversions use Douglas Insights assumptions of USD 1.13 per euro and JPY 150 and KRW 1,400 per dollar. AI tools help draft the text and automated checks test the arithmetic and links; the Douglas Insights research desk chooses the sources, builds the model and approves publication, as our [editorial standards](https://www.douglasinsights.com/research-methodology/) explain.

## What counts in the UHP tyre study, and what is excluded?

The UHP tyre study counts new passenger car and SUV tyres on rims of 18 inches and above, rated V or higher, sold as OE or replacement worldwide. Retreads, truck, motorcycle and bicycle tyres and wheels are excluded.

The study splits revenue by 4 rim sizes, 4 channels and 5 regions: Europe, North America, Asia Pacific, the Middle East and Africa, and Latin America. Bicycle tyres appear in our [Bike Tube and Tire Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/bike-tube-and-tire-market/) report, end-of-life tyres in the [Tyre Pyrolysis Recycling Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/tyre-pyrolysis-recycling-market/) report and steering hardware in the [Automotive Steering System Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/automotive-steering-system-market/) report.
