USD 171.5 million: that is what buyers spent on zinc bromine batteries in 2025, and the figure reaches USD 942.7 million by 2035. Zinc bromine batteries are water-based storage devices that plate zinc metal on charge and hold bromine in the electrolyte; the zinc bromine batteries market covers sealed static modules, hybrid flow batteries, gel batteries and the electrolyte and stack service behind them. Douglas Insights builds the 2025 total as 567.8 megawatt-hours (MWh) at an average USD 302.1 per kilowatt-hour (kWh), which equals USD 171.5 million, and models a revenue compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 18.58% over 2026 to 2035. One producer sets the pace: [Eos Energy Enterprises reported USD 114.2 million of 2025 revenue and a USD 701.5 million backlog on 26 February 2026](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1805077/000162828026011958/eoseq4fy25earningsreleas.htm). The title sits with our [energy storage and batteries research](https://www.douglasinsights.com/industry/energy-power/energy-storage-batteries/), and the MWh and price arithmetic follows the [Douglas Insights research methodology](https://www.douglasinsights.com/research-methodology/).

## How much do utilities pay per kWh for zinc-bromine storage today?

Buyers paid a blended USD 302.1 per kWh for zinc bromine batteries in 2025 on our model, with sealed static modules near USD 250.5 and flow or gel systems near USD 512.0. Douglas Insights projects the zinc-bromine average falling 3.2% a year to USD 218.2 per kWh by 2035 as automated lines spread fixed costs.

The static figure is arithmetic from a filing, not a quote sheet. Eos carried a backlog of USD 701.5 million representing 2.8 gigawatt-hours (GWh) at the end of its 2025 year, which divides to USD 250.5 per kWh of contracted zinc-bromide storage.

| Zinc-bromine price tier | Basis | Realised price per kWh |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Static aqueous zinc-bromide modules, Eos backlog average | Filing arithmetic: USD 701.5 million over 2.8 GWh | USD 250.5 |
| Hybrid zinc-bromine flow systems | Douglas Insights model band | USD 480 to USD 620 |
| Gel non-flow zinc-bromide batteries | Douglas Insights model band | USD 380 to USD 450 |
| All non-Eos supply, with electrolyte and stack service | Douglas Insights model | USD 512.0 |
| Blended zinc bromine batteries average, 2025 | Douglas Insights model | USD 302.1 |
| Blended zinc bromine batteries average, 2035 | Douglas Insights model | USD 218.2 |

Flow systems cost more per kWh because pumps, tanks and stacks are sized for small sites. Meineng Energy's mobile zinc-bromide unit stores up to 125 kWh, and its V3-S modules scale from 50 kWh to more than 5,000 kWh, so engineering cost per kWh stays high.

Price is the smaller lever: a 3.2% annual decline against 22.5% annual MWh growth means volume supplies all of the zinc bromine batteries revenue gain to 2035.

## Which zinc-bromine format makes the money: sealed static modules, hybrid flow or gel?

Static aqueous zinc-bromide modules make the money, with 68.4% of zinc bromine batteries revenue, or USD 117.3 million in 2025 by our model. Sealed modules need no pumps, ship as factory-built containers and come mostly from one high-volume producer, and they also grow fastest, at 19.6% a year to USD 702.4 million by 2035.

| Zinc bromine batteries segment | Share of 2025 revenue | 2025 value | Growth 2026-2035 | 2035 value |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Static aqueous zinc-bromide modules | 68.4% | USD 117.3 million | 19.6% | USD 702.4 million |
| Hybrid zinc-bromine flow batteries | 19.6% | USD 33.6 million | 14.9% | USD 134.8 million |
| Gel non-flow zinc-bromide batteries | 4.3% | USD 7.4 million | 16.3% | USD 33.5 million |
| Electrolyte and stack service | 7.7% | USD 13.2 million | 18.5% | USD 72.1 million |

Static aqueous zinc-bromide modules lead because the Eos Z3 design packs a 0.8 kWh module running at 22 to 48 volts direct current, rated for 6,000 or more cycles over 20 years. Zinc-bromide chemistry sits at the heart of the module: Eos describes high purity zinc-bromide as part of its patented electrolyte system, with TETRA Technologies supplying at least 75% of it.

Hybrid zinc-bromine flow batteries hold 19.6%, worth USD 33.6 million, and grow 14.9% a year to USD 134.8 million. Redflow's exit removed the largest Western flow supplier, which is why the segment trails. Gel non-flow zinc-bromide batteries take 4.3%, USD 7.4 million, rising 16.3% a year to USD 33.5 million; Gelion's Endure gel is fire retardant and rated to run at 50°C without air-conditioning.

Electrolyte and stack service carries 7.7%, USD 13.2 million, and grows 18.5% a year to USD 72.1 million, because every installed MWh needs electrolyte top-ups and stack replacement over a 20-year life. Douglas Insights expects static modules to reach 74.5% of zinc bromine batteries revenue by 2035, up 6.1 points.

## Why are grid operators ordering more zinc-bromide long-duration storage?

Zinc bromine batteries volume grows 22.5% a year, from 567.8 MWh in 2025 to 4.32 GWh in 2035. Utilities want 4 to 16 hour storage, US factories won federal finance, backup buyers want non-flammable cells and microgrids need tolerant batteries. Douglas Insights assigns those four drivers 9.4, 6.3, 4.1 and 2.7 points.

### Utility long-duration procurement: 9.4 points

Eos markets its zinc-bromide systems for 4 to 16 or more hours of discharge, with less than 4% degradation over 25 years and up to 90% round-trip efficiency. Utilities are signing: the 2.8 GWh backlog Eos reported for the end of 2025 equals 4.9 times our whole 2025 zinc bromine batteries volume. Fourth-quarter 2025 revenue at Eos was USD 58.0 million. Converting that backlog supplies 9.4 points of annual MWh growth, the largest driver.

### US manufacturing and federal finance: 6.3 points

Factory scale is the second lever. The [Department of Energy (DOE) Loan Programs Office describes the Eos project](https://www.energy.gov/lpo/eos) as zinc-bromine batteries that are non-flammable, need no active cooling and draw 80% of materials from US supply. Eos said on 3 December 2024 that it had closed a USD 303.5 million DOE-guaranteed loan for four automated lines aimed at 8 GWh of annual capacity by 2027, with a maturity of 15 June 2034. Together with the domestic content credit bonus, these add 6.3 points.

### Backup and commercial buyers: 4.1 points

Commercial and industrial sites and data centre operators buy zinc-bromide storage for fire safety rather than footprint. Eos expects record quarterly revenue of USD 68 million to USD 69 million for the second quarter of 2026, and its first-half 2026 revenue already passed the USD 114.2 million it booked in all of 2025. Douglas Insights counts USD 29.7 million of commercial and industrial revenue and USD 14.7 million of data centre and telecom backup revenue in 2025, together 25.9% of the zinc bromine batteries market. Backup and commercial orders add 4.1 points.

### Microgrids and off-grid sites: 2.7 points

Remote grids value batteries that tolerate heat and full discharge. Redflow's largest zinc-bromine flow project was a 20 MWh system at a California microgrid, and Gelion signed with Mayur Renewables to supply 100 MWh of storage for Papua New Guinea power projects over five years. Meineng Energy built a 125 kWh mobile zinc-bromide unit to replace diesel generators. Microgrids and off-grid sites add 2.7 points, bringing the four drivers to the full 22.5-point volume leg.

## What hurdles slow zinc-bromine batteries in a lithium-dominated storage market?

Three hurdles remove 5.5 points from zinc bromine batteries volume growth: manufacturing losses, supplier failures that worry lenders, and chemistry risk that insurers and banks still price in. Without them Douglas Insights would model 28.0% annual MWh growth instead of 22.5%, so each hurdle carries a measurable cost.

Manufacturing losses remove 2.3 points. In its [preliminary second-quarter 2026 update](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/0001805077/000162828026048253/earningsprerelease_0714x.htm), Eos guided to a gross margin loss of 69% to 73%, even as backlog rose about 25% in a quarter to roughly USD 807 million and cash stood near USD 364 million. A producer selling below cost must ration new zinc-bromide orders until line yields improve.

Supplier failure removes 1.8 points. [Redflow, the Brisbane maker of zinc-bromine flow batteries, ceased trading in October 2024](https://energy-storage.news/flow-battery-maker-redflow-out-of-business-with-administrators-unable-to-find-buyer) after administrators found no buyer, having entered voluntary administration in August 2024, leaving a 400 MWh partnership and a Queensland factory plan on hold. Lenders now want warranty reserves from every zinc bromine batteries bidder.

Chemistry risk removes 1.4 points. Zinc-bromine systems have short public operating records next to lithium. Eos quotes round-trip efficiency in the mid-80s percent when depth of discharge is cut for efficiency-hungry jobs.

## Who builds zinc-bromine batteries now that Redflow has exited?

Eos Energy Enterprises builds about 66.6% of zinc bromine batteries revenue on Douglas Insights estimates, based on its USD 114.2 million of 2025 revenue against a USD 171.5 million market. Primus Power and Meineng Energy follow, putting the top three at 76.9%; no other maker discloses zinc-bromine revenue, so the rest are estimates.

| Company | Douglas Insights share estimate | What the position is built on |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Eos Energy Enterprises | 66.6% | Z3 static zinc-bromide modules, 2 GWh annualized capacity, DOE-guaranteed loan |
| Primus Power | 6.1% | EnergyPod 2 five-hour zinc bromide flow battery |
| Meineng Energy | 4.2% | Wuhu, Anhui flow batteries from 6 kWh to more than 5,000 kWh |
| ZBest Power | 3.4% | Chinese flow battery company that hosted Redflow units in Qinghai |
| Gelion | 2.6% | Endure gel non-flow zinc-bromide battery |
| TETRA Technologies | Electrolyte supplier, not counted | PureFlow high purity zinc-bromide for at least 75% of Eos demand |

Eos leads on scale. It reached 2 GWh of annualized production capacity by the end of 2025 and targets a 4 GWh run-rate by the end of 2026, figures no other zinc bromine batteries maker approaches. TETRA Technologies sits upstream, turning its bromine production into PureFlow zinc-bromide electrolyte, one of the largest cost items in each Eos cube.

Primus Power raised US$94 million of equity plus US$20 million in government grants to build its EnergyPod 2, a five-hour zinc bromide flow battery with a 20-year life aimed at commercial peak shaving. Meineng Energy, a Wuhu joint venture of ZBB Energy and Anhui Xinlong Electrical, sells zinc-bromide flow systems in China, including mobile units. ZBest Power ran a 100 kWh array of 10 Redflow ZBM2 batteries at a Qinghai smart grid site.

Gelion, a University of Sydney spin-out listed on London's Alternative Investment Market (AIM), makes the Endure gel battery in partnership with Sydney manufacturer Battery Energy, and trialled it at Acciona Energy's 1.2 MW Tudela solar plant in Spain.

## Where do zinc-bromine battery megawatt-hours get installed, region by region?

North America takes 68.2% of zinc bromine batteries revenue, USD 117.0 million in 2025, because the dominant static-module maker builds and sells in the United States. Asia Pacific grows fastest at 23.8% a year to USD 194.5 million by 2035, as Chinese flow battery programmes and island grids add zinc-bromine capacity.

| Region | 2025 | 2026 | 2035 | CAGR |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| North America | USD 117.0 million | USD 137.1 million | USD 572.1 million | 17.2% |
| Asia Pacific | USD 23.0 million | USD 28.5 million | USD 194.5 million | 23.8% |
| Europe | USD 14.2 million | USD 17.0 million | USD 87.2 million | 19.9% |
| Latin America | USD 7.0 million | USD 8.5 million | USD 48.3 million | 21.3% |
| Middle East and Africa | USD 10.3 million | USD 11.8 million | USD 40.7 million | 14.72% |

North America grows 17.2% a year to USD 572.1 million from a large base. Asia Pacific starts at USD 23.0 million; Chinese makers such as Meineng Energy and ZBest Power, plus Pacific island projects of the Papua New Guinea type, carry its 23.8% rate. Europe holds USD 14.2 million and grows 19.9% a year to USD 87.2 million, helped by trials such as Acciona's in Spain.

Latin America is small at USD 7.0 million but grows 21.3% a year to USD 48.3 million as mines and remote grids buy long-duration zinc-bromine storage. Middle East and Africa is the wildcard: USD 10.3 million in 2025, growing 14.72% a year to USD 40.7 million in our base case. Desert sites gain most from batteries that need no air-conditioning, but finance sets the timing.

## Which discharge hours and applications do zinc-bromide batteries serve?

Utility-scale storage buys 61.7% of zinc bromine batteries revenue, USD 105.8 million in 2025, and the 6 to 12 hours band holds 47.2%, USD 80.9 million. Zinc-bromine chemistry wins jobs where buyers need many hours more than high power, so mid-length and long shifts dominate the mix.

| Application | Share of 2025 revenue | 2025 value |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Utility-scale storage | 61.7% | USD 105.8 million |
| Commercial and industrial | 17.3% | USD 29.7 million |
| Microgrids and off-grid | 12.4% | USD 21.3 million |
| Data centre and telecom backup | 8.6% | USD 14.7 million |

| Discharge duration | Share of 2025 revenue | 2025 value |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 3 to 6 hours | 38.9% | USD 66.7 million |
| 6 to 12 hours | 47.2% | USD 80.9 million |
| Over 12 hours | 13.9% | USD 23.9 million |

The 3 to 6 hours band, USD 66.7 million, covers evening solar shifting and Primus-style five-hour peak shaving. The Over 12 hours band is only USD 23.9 million, 13.9%, but it is where zinc-bromide modules rated for 16 or more hours meet the least competition.

## Can Eos factory output keep pace with the zinc-bromide backlog?

Yes on paper: Eos reached 2 GWh of annualized zinc-bromide capacity by the end of 2025, about 3.5 times the 567.8 MWh the whole zinc bromine batteries market shipped that year on our model. The binding limit is yield and margin, not floor space, because each extra line still sells below cost.

The capacity plan keeps climbing: 4 GWh of run-rate by the end of 2026 and 8 GWh of annual capacity by 2027 under the DOE-backed expansion. Our base case needs only 4.32 GWh of global zinc bromine batteries volume in 2035, 54.0% of that 8 GWh target. Either Eos wins share from lithium faster than we model, or lines run part-loaded.

## Do zinc-bromide batteries need air-conditioning or fire suppression at hot sites?

Zinc-bromide batteries mostly need neither: the DOE describes Eos units as non-flammable and free of active cooling, and Gelion rates its gel battery for 50°C operation without air-conditioning. Water-based electrolyte is the reason, and it trims balance-of-plant spending on hot zinc bromine batteries sites by removing chillers.

Gelion's Endure survived exposure to 700°C heat in testing and can be discharged to zero volts without damage, while the Eos Z3 recovers fully from abuse cycles above 90°C. For data centre and telecom backup buyers, worth USD 14.7 million in 2025, those properties matter more than energy density.

## Which tax credit rules and EU battery law shape zinc-bromine procurement?

Two instruments matter most for zinc bromine batteries: the US section 48E storage credit, a 6% base rising to 30% plus bonuses, and European Union (EU) Regulation 2023/1542. Douglas Insights links 6.3 points of volume growth to US finance and sourcing incentives.

The [Internal Revenue Service (IRS) guidance on the clean electricity investment credit](https://www.irs.gov/credits-deductions/clean-electricity-investment-credit) covers energy storage technology placed in service after 31 December 2024. The 6% base credit rises to 30% when prevailing wage and apprenticeship tests are met, with up to 10 more points for domestic content and 10 for energy communities; phase-out starts no earlier than 2032. With 80% of Eos materials already sourced in the US, zinc-bromide projects are well placed for the domestic content bonus.

In Europe, [Regulation (EU) 2023/1542](https://eur-lex.europa.eu/eli/reg/2023/1542/oj), adopted on 12 July 2023, sets rules for stationary battery energy storage systems, including battery passport and carbon footprint provisions. Europe's zinc bromine batteries revenue grows 19.9% a year in our model. Enclosure and container suppliers face the same rules, as our [Grid-Scale Battery Energy Storage Enclosures Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/grid-scale-battery-energy-storage-enclosures-market/) report explains.

## How large can zinc-bromide storage revenue get by 2035 in slower and faster scenarios?

Our base case puts zinc bromine batteries at USD 942.7 million in 2035, from 22.5% MWh growth and a 3.2% annual price decline. A slower case of 15.0% volume and minus 4.0% price stops at USD 461.3 million; a faster case of 30.0% and minus 2.0% reaches USD 1.93 billion.

| Zinc bromine batteries scenario | Volume growth | Price change | Revenue CAGR | 2035 value |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Slower | 15.0% | -4.0% | 10.40% | USD 461.3 million |
| Base case | 22.5% | -3.2% | 18.58% | USD 942.7 million |
| Faster | 30.0% | -2.0% | 27.40% | USD 1.93 billion |

MWh growth is the lever. Add one point to annual volume growth and 2035 revenue gains USD 79.8 million; take one away and it loses USD 74.2 million. Outside forecasters we reviewed sit between 11.6% and 25.6% a year, and our 18.58% lands close to their 18.6% midpoint.

The faster case is what full delivery of the Eos 2026 guidance of USD 300 million to USD 400 million, issued with its 26 February 2026 results, implies. That guidance alone exceeds our smoothed 2026 market value of USD 203.4 million. We keep the base case because gross margin losses near 70% make the run rate fragile; the slower case follows if a second producer fails the way Redflow did.

## Douglas Exclusive: the zinc-bromine deployment atlas

The deployment atlas is a Douglas Insights model built from 11 disclosures and 6 of our own assumptions; no agency publishes a zinc-bromine installation map. It places 567.8 MWh of 2025 zinc bromine batteries into five regions and finds North America holding 461.3 MWh, 81.2% of volume but 68.2% of value.

| Region | 2025 MWh | 2025 value | Implied USD per kWh | Lead format |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| North America | 461.3 | USD 117.0 million | USD 253.6 | Static aqueous zinc-bromide modules |
| Asia Pacific | 44.9 | USD 23.0 million | USD 512.0 | Hybrid zinc-bromine flow batteries |
| Europe | 27.7 | USD 14.2 million | USD 512.0 | Gel and flow trials |
| Latin America | 13.7 | USD 7.0 million | USD 512.0 | Hybrid zinc-bromine flow batteries |
| Middle East and Africa | 20.2 | USD 10.3 million | USD 509.9 | Hybrid zinc-bromine flow batteries |

The finding is a price split. Where the static module dominates, North America pays USD 253.6 per kWh; everywhere else buyers pay about double, near USD 512.0, because flow and gel units ship in smaller lots. A second finding concerns capacity: Eos's 2 GWh of year-end 2025 capacity is 3.5 times the 567.8 MWh atlas total.

The 11 sourced inputs are Eos's 2025 revenue, backlog value, backlog GWh, 2 GWh and 4 GWh capacity, the 8 GWh target and USD 807 million mid-2026 backlog, plus Redflow's 20 MWh project, Gelion's 100 MWh agreement, Meineng's module range and Primus Power's five-hour rating. The 6 assumptions are non-Eos volume of 112.0 MWh, its USD 512.0 average and four regional splits. Shift that non-Eos price by USD 50 per kWh and the 2025 atlas total moves USD 5.6 million.

## Which inputs and methodology checks sit beneath the 567.8 MWh zinc-bromine receipt?

We multiplied 567.8 MWh of zinc bromine batteries by USD 302.1 per kWh to reach USD 171.5 million in 2025. MWh then grow 22.5% and price falls 3.2% a year, giving USD 942.7 million in 2035. Five regions and four formats each reconcile to that total.

Eos: USD 114.2 million divided by USD 250.5 per kWh gives 455.8 MWh. Everyone else: 112.0 MWh at USD 512.0 gives USD 57.3 million. Sum: 567.8 MWh and USD 171.5 million, or USD 302.1 per kWh. Revenue CAGR: 1.225 times 0.968, minus one, equals 18.58%.

Check one: segment values for 2035 sum to USD 942.8 million, 0.01% from the base. Check two: regional values sum exactly to USD 171.5 million in 2025 and to USD 942.8 million in 2035. Check three: five published CAGRs from 11.6% to 25.6% bracket our 18.58%. Published 2025 sizes of USD 0.4 billion to USD 1.43 billion run 2.3 to 8.3 times ours, mainly because they count wider flow or zinc battery revenue. Related upstream metal prices sit in our [Zinc Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/zinc-market/) study, and control electronics in the [Battery Management System Market](https://www.douglasinsights.com/battery-management-system-market/) report.
