Samsung Electronics put a 10 kg Bespoke AI Washer on its IFA 2026 stand in Berlin on 2 September 2026, rated at an energy efficiency index of 15.5, or 70.2% below the EU Class A ceiling, according to the Samsung Newsroom. The smart washing machine market covers household washers and washer-dryers that connect to a phone app or home hub over Wi-Fi and run sensor-led or AI wash programmes. The global smart washing machine market comes to USD 14.82 billion in 2025, built as 37.85 million connected units × USD 391.6 average realised price = USD 14.82 billion, and climbs to USD 41.00 billion by 2035 at a revenue CAGR of 10.71%. Volume does most of the work at 9.42% a year; price adds 1.18%. Readers tracking connected appliances will find related coverage in the smart home and IoT devices hub, and every step of the build follows the Douglas Insights research methodology.

Which machines qualify as smart washers here, and which are left out?

A smart washing machine, for this study, is a household washer or washer-dryer with built-in Wi-Fi and a working app, 37.85 million units in 2025. Such machines made up about 25.1% of the 151 million washers Douglas Insights estimates were sold worldwide in 2025. Dongle-only machines and commercial coin-op washers sit outside the count.

Four product formats are counted: Front-load smart washers, Top-load smart washers, Washer-dryer combos, and Compact and stackable units. Two end users are modelled, Residential households and Laundromats and shared laundry, the second at under 4% of units. Three channels carry the sales: Brand online stores, Electronics retailers, and Builder and contract channel sales into new apartments. Revenue is booked at the realised price paid by the buyer, net of retailer promotions, before sales tax.

Detergent subscriptions and app services are excluded. So is laundry outsourcing, which the Dry Cleaning and Laundry Service Market report sizes on its own.

Which appliance companies win the Wi-Fi washer race, and on what strengths?

Seven companies hold about 75.2% of 2025 smart washing machine revenue, Douglas Insights estimates, and the top three, Haier, LG and Samsung, take 46.9% between them. Each wins on a different asset: Haier on breadth of brands, LG on direct-drive motors and the ThinQ app, Samsung on SmartThings and the efficiency race.

Haier reported 2025 revenue of RMB 302.35 billion, up 5.71%, and said its washing machines reached a 14.4% global share, ranking first, in its full-year 2025 results release of 26 March 2026. The same release says the Leader Effortless three-drum washer passed 300,000 units sold. Douglas Insights puts Haier’s share of smart washer revenue at 17.8%, higher than its all-washer share because its Casarte and GE Appliances lines skew connected. Whirlpool booked USD 15.52 billion of 2025 net sales across all appliances, and Electrolux reported SEK 131.28 billion; neither splits out connected laundry, so their smart washer shares of 7.4% and 5.1% are our estimates. BSH, owner of the Bosch and Siemens brands, turned over EUR 15.0 billion in 2025 and spent EUR 847 million on research.

Midea rounds out the seven: China Daily reports it held the world’s largest unit share in washing machine motors in 2025, which gives it a cost edge inside every drum it sells, and its 2025 revenue rose 12.1% to 458.5 billion yuan.

Company What the smart washer position is built on Est. 2025 smart washer revenue share
Haier Haier, Casarte, Leader, GE Appliances and Candy brands; 14.4% all-washer share 17.8%
LG Electronics AI DD direct-drive motors, ThinQ app, heat-pump WashCombo 15.6%
Samsung Electronics Bespoke AI line, SmartThings, A-70% efficiency models 13.5%
Midea In-house washing machine motors, China volume 11.2%
Whirlpool North American top-load base, Maytag and KitchenAid 7.4%
Electrolux European front-load, AEG and Frigidaire 5.1%
BSH Bosch and Siemens, Home Connect app 4.6%
Others Regional Chinese, Turkish and Indian makers 24.8%

Concentration is moderate. No single washing machine brand holds a fifth of connected revenue, and the 24.8% long tail includes fast-moving Chinese labels that sell app-linked top-loaders below USD 250.

Which drum format makes the money in smart laundry: front-load, top-load or combo?

Front-load smart washers lead with 46.3% of 2025 revenue, USD 6.86 billion, because Europe and premium Asian buyers default to the format. Washer-dryer combos are the fastest-growing smart washing machine format at 14.6% a year, as heat-pump drying arrives inside one cabinet.

Segment Share 2025 Value 2025 Growth 2026-2035 Value 2035
Front-load smart washers 46.3% USD 6.86 billion 10.1% USD 17.96 billion
Top-load smart washers 28.9% USD 4.28 billion 9.2% USD 10.33 billion
Washer-dryer combos 17.6% USD 2.61 billion 14.6% USD 10.19 billion
Compact and stackable units 7.2% USD 1.07 billion 8.3% USD 2.37 billion

Front-load smart washers hold USD 6.86 billion because the format carries the inverter motors and load sensors that AI wash cycles need, and it is the default in Europe. Top-load smart washers bring in USD 4.28 billion, anchored in North America, China and India where agitator and impeller machines still dominate laundry rooms; their 9.2% growth trails the total because buyers resist paying for Wi-Fi on a USD 300 machine. Washer-dryer combos take USD 2.61 billion, or 17.6%, and climb to USD 10.19 billion by 2035. Heat-pump drying in a single drum removes the second appliance, and both LG and Samsung now market combo models first. Compact and stackable units add USD 1.07 billion at 8.3% growth, sold into small apartments in Japan, Korea and European cities.

Douglas Insights expects combos to lift their share from 17.6% to about 24.9% by 2035. That shift alone adds roughly USD 2.4 billion to 2035 revenue against a flat mix.

Why are connected washer shipments climbing near 9.4% a year?

Connected washer units grow 9.42% a year to 2035 on four drivers: Wi-Fi as a default specification, efficiency-led replacement, washer-dryer combos and first-time buyers in emerging markets. Together they lift the smart washing machine base from 37.85 million units in 2025 to 93.12 million in 2035.

Wi-Fi moves from option to default

Wi-Fi becoming standard on mid-priced front-loaders contributes 3.86 points of the 9.42-point volume leg. Douglas Insights estimates that 25.1% of 2025 washers shipped with working connectivity, rising to about 50.6% of a 184 million unit market by 2035. Once a radio module costs under USD 4 on the bill of materials, brands stop charging for it and the connected washing machine becomes the base model. Korea shows the end point: our estimate puts connected units above 70% of washers sold there in 2025. China, where output rose 4.8% to 125.2 million washing machines in 2025 according to National Bureau of Statistics data reported by Mysteel, sets the cost curve for most of the world.

Efficiency labels pull replacement forward

Efficiency-driven replacement adds 2.37 points. The EU energy label scale caps Class A at an index of 52, and makers now advertise how far below it they sit: LG claims Energy Class A for a full wash-to-dry cycle on its heat-pump WashCombo, and its IFA 2025 release of 21 August 2025 also cites a Microplastic Care cycle that cuts up to 60% of microplastics from synthetic fibres. Samsung’s 10 kg model rated 70.2% below the Class A threshold, shown on 2 September 2026, gives European buyers a measurable reason to retire a 10-year-old drum. Smart washing machine apps also report kilowatt-hours per cycle, which makes the saving visible on the owner’s phone. Douglas Insights estimates the average washer replaced in Europe in 2025 was 11 years old, so a large installed base sits in the old D to G classes and is due for an upgrade before 2030.

Combos and new households

Washer-dryer combos add 1.71 points by turning two purchases into one connected unit. First-time buyers in India, Indonesia, Brazil and the Gulf add 1.48 points: Douglas Insights calculates that 8 of every 100 smart washers sold in 2035 go to a household that never owned an automatic washer. In India alone, our model adds about 2.1 million connected washers a year by 2030, most of them 7 to 8 kg top-loaders sold through Electronics retailers. The four contributions, 3.86, 2.37, 1.71 and 1.48 points, sum to the 9.42% volume leg.

What slows app activation and cybersecurity-ready washer sales?

Three restraints remove about 1.52 points from smart washing machine volume growth in the slower case: low app activation, cybersecurity compliance cost and price wars in China’s replacement market. Without them, units would climb 9.42% a year; with all three biting, the leg falls to 7.9%.

Low app activation takes 0.61 points. Douglas Insights estimates that only about 46% of connected washers are ever paired with a phone, so retailers struggle to justify a premium for a feature half of buyers never switch on. Brands answer by tying warranty registration and remote diagnostics to the app.

Cybersecurity compliance takes 0.58 points. Internet-connected radio equipment sold in the EU must meet new network-protection and data-protection essential requirements, and the cost of secure firmware, update servers and testing lands hardest on smaller washer brands with thin margins.

Price competition in China takes 0.33 points. Volume there is large, but replacement subsidies and online price wars push some brands to strip Wi-Fi out of entry top-loaders to hit a CNY 1,000 shelf price, slowing the connected share of washing machine sales.

Where do smart washing machine sales concentrate, from Shanghai to Riyadh?

Asia Pacific leads with USD 6.18 billion of 2025 smart washing machine revenue, 41.7% of the total, on China’s scale and Korea’s high connected uptake. The Middle East and Africa grows fastest at 12.37% a year from a USD 592.9 million base.

Asia Pacific reaches USD 18.19 billion by 2035 at 11.4% a year, led by China, Korea, Japan and a fast-rising India. North America holds USD 3.65 billion in 2025 and grows 9.1% to USD 8.71 billion; top-load habits and a mature replacement cycle keep it below the global rate. Europe follows at USD 3.47 billion, rising 10.3% a year to USD 9.24 billion as label-driven replacement and heat-pump combos sell well in Germany, France and the Nordics. Latin America contributes USD 933.8 million and expands 12.2% a year to USD 2.95 billion, with Brazil and Mexico doing most of it.

The Middle East and Africa climbs from USD 592.9 million to USD 1.90 billion, the fastest regional rate at 12.37%, because new Gulf apartment towers specify connected appliances through the Builder and contract channel. The wildcard is India: Douglas Insights reckons a 2-point swing in its connected share would move Asia Pacific’s 2035 figure by about USD 0.9 billion.

How much do buyers pay for a Wi-Fi washer, entry to AI flagship?

Buyers pay a 2025 average of USD 391.6 per smart washing machine, Douglas Insights estimates. Bands run from roughly USD 230 to USD 330 for entry top-loaders up to USD 1,100 to USD 2,300 for AI washer-dryer combos. Mix toward combos lifts the average 1.18% a year.

Price band Typical realised price Example format
Entry connected USD 230 to USD 330 Top-load impeller, 8 to 10 kg, basic app
Mainstream USD 380 to USD 620 Front-load inverter, 9 to 11 kg
Premium AI USD 700 to USD 1,050 Front-load with auto-dosing and load sensing
Combo flagship USD 1,100 to USD 2,300 Heat-pump washer-dryer combo

China pulls the global average down: a large share of its connected top-loaders sell under USD 260, while the same capacity front-loader in Germany realises above USD 600. Douglas Insights projects the average reaches USD 440.3 by 2035. Combos drive almost all of that rise; like-for-like prices of a 9 kg connected front-loader fall about 1.5% a year as radio modules and sensors get cheaper.

Do auto-dosing and AI wash cycles shorten the washing machine replacement cycle?

Auto-dosing and AI cycles shorten replacement only slightly, by about 0.6 years on an 11-year average washing machine life, Douglas Insights estimates. Their real effect is on price: an auto-dosing drawer adds USD 60 to USD 120 to the shelf price of a smart washer.

Remote diagnostics matter more for brand loyalty than for timing. A machine that reports a drain-pump fault before it floods a kitchen keeps the owner inside the same brand, and app data help service teams arrive with the right part. The broader picture of connected rooms is in the Smart Home Market report, and water reuse inside laundry systems is covered in the Washing Water Recycling System Market study.

Which energy label and cyber rules shape washer design through 2028?

Three rules shape smart washing machine design to 2028: the EU energy label, the EU cybersecurity requirements for radio equipment and the US Department of Energy (DOE) clothes washer standard due on 1 March 2028. Each changes the cost of a 2025 design.

The EU label for household washing machines, Commission Delegated Regulation (EU) 2019/2014, has applied from 1 March 2021 and caps Class A at an energy efficiency index of 52, according to EUR-Lex. The rescaled label left the top class almost empty at launch, which is why brands now compete on how far below 52 they go.

In the United States, the DOE direct final rule on residential clothes washers was published on 15 March 2024, took effect on 15 July 2024 and requires compliance from 1 March 2028, according to the Federal Register. Douglas Insights expects the rule to add about USD 18 to the build cost of a typical top-load washer.

Commission Delegated Regulation (EU) 2022/30 has applied since 1 August 2025 and extends the Radio Equipment Directive’s network, privacy and fraud protections to internet-connected equipment, as published in EUR-Lex. Every Wi-Fi washer sold in the EU since that date needs documented security measures.

What if washer-dryer combos or a weak China replacement cycle reset the 2035 total?

The 2035 smart washing machine total runs from USD 33.66 billion in the slower case to USD 49.77 billion in the faster case, around a USD 41.00 billion base. Volume growth decides the spread far more than price, because the connected share of washers sold is still only 25.1% and can move fast.

Base case: 9.42% volume and 1.18% price, giving USD 41.00 billion and a 10.71% revenue CAGR. Slower case: volume 7.9% and price 0.6%, as China strips Wi-Fi from entry models and app activation stalls, giving USD 33.66 billion. Faster case: volume 11.1% and price 1.6%, if combos follow the path Samsung signalled on 2 September 2026 with its A-70% and 13 kg models, giving USD 49.77 billion.

Sensitivity is high: one extra point of annual volume growth lifts the 2035 value by about USD 3.91 billion, on our model. Published forecasts for smart washers run from about 11.2% to 22.7% a year. Our 10.71% sits below that band because we count only machines with built-in, working Wi-Fi and book revenue at realised, not list, prices.

Douglas Exclusive: the smart washer compliance and launch calendar

The Douglas Insights calendar is our own model, built from 18 inputs: 13 dated primary-source entries on rules, launches and results, plus 5 regional revenue rows from the smart washing machine forecast. Its finding: 46.7% of the USD 20.09 billion market Douglas Insights projects for 2028 sits in North America and Europe, where a rule date falls inside the window.

10 December 2027 Regulation (EU) 2022/30 expiry date Cyber duties move to the next EU framework
1 March 2028 DOE compliance date New US clothes washer standard binds

Of the 13 entries, 5 are regulatory gates, 3 are product launches and 4 are results filings that anchor our share estimates; the 13th is the expiry date that hands EU cyber duties to the next framework. The calendar counts USD 9.39 billion of 2028 smart washing machine revenue in the two regions with a binding rule date, so a one-year slip in any manufacturer’s compliant line-up puts a measurable slice of sales at risk.

Read the calendar as a planning tool, not an official register. Our count shows the busiest stretch for washer launches runs from August 2025 to March 2028, when 10 of the 13 entries fall.

How the model rebuilds 37.85 million connected washers into revenue: which receipts hold?

The model multiplies 37.85 million connected washing machines by a USD 391.6 average price to reach USD 14.82 billion, across 5 regions and 23 countries, using 41 data points. Three cross-checks agree within 6%, and every figure on this page traces back to that single receipt.

Units: a global washer base of 151 million in 2025, anchored on 125.2 million units of Chinese output, times a 25.1% connected share. Price: four band prices weighted by format share. Arithmetic: 37.85 × 391.6 = 14,822.1, written as USD 14.82 billion. Forecast: 14.82 × (1.0942 × 1.0118)^10 = 41.00, a 10.71% revenue CAGR.

Cross-check one: Haier’s 14.4% all-washer share against our 17.8% smart share implies a connected mix in its range, within 5.2%. Cross-check two: the regional build sums to USD 14.82 billion in 2025 and USD 41.00 billion in 2035 with zero gap. Cross-check three: the four segments sum to USD 40.85 billion in 2035, within 0.4% of the top-down total.

What should laundry buyers and appliance planners watch over the next 24 months?

Planners should watch three smart washing machine signals before March 2028: combo share passing 20% of revenue, app activation passing 50% and the price gap between connected and plain top-loaders falling below USD 25. Each would move the forecast toward the faster case.

Douglas Insights tracks the combo share at 17.6% today. Laundry chemical makers should also note that auto-dosing washers change detergent pack sizes, a shift covered in the Surfactant Market report.
