Research Methodology

This page describes how Douglas Insights builds the estimates and forecasts published in its market research reports. The same process applies to every report unless the report states otherwise.

Bottom-up market models

Market size is estimated from the demand side. For each country, the model counts the underlying demand unit for that market, such as procedures, installed units, tests or shipments, then applies usage rates and realised prices net of discounts. Country models aggregate to regions and regions to the global figure, so every regional table sums to the global total by construction.

Reconciliation

The bottom-up total is compared against supply-side evidence: revenue disclosures of listed companies active in the market, installed-base counts, trade data and distributor channel information. Gaps between the two views are reconciled item by item rather than spread across segments.

Primary research

Interviews are conducted with participants across the value chain, typically manufacturers, distributors, end users and procurement leads. Primary inputs are used to validate usage rates, pricing and adoption assumptions in the model.

Confidence grades and method receipts

Each headline figure in a report carries a confidence grade of High, Medium or Low, together with a short note on how the figure was produced and what would change it. Grades reflect the strength of the underlying evidence, not the importance of the number.

Forecasting

Forecasts separate volume growth from price growth. Volume assumptions rest on demand drivers such as demographics, policy and installed capacity. Price assumptions rest on product mix shift and competitive dynamics. Reports state both components so readers can test alternative assumptions.

Editions and updates

Reports are dated and versioned. Material changes between editions are listed on the report page, and the scheduled next review date is shown where one is set.
