How the prices are assessed
Every figure is a trade-implied unit value: the customs value of a country's monthly trade in the commodity's HS code divided by the customs tonnage, from national customs statistics as compiled by UN Comtrade. Exports FOB for net exporters, imports CIF for net importers, so each country line is the leg that carries the volume. A month is published only when its tonnage clears the volume floor and the figure passes the desk's checks against the previous months and the other countries; a month that fails is held, not estimated. Each commodity page carries its own methodology note and version.
- Monthly. Published as each country's customs statistics release, most within six to ten weeks of the month's end.
- By country and basis. Not one global number: the FOB export value of the United States and the CIF landed value in India are different prices, and both are shown.
- Verified, not estimated. Volume floor, movement checks with written notes, coverage rule, desk sign-off. A revised figure is marked and the earlier value stays in the record.
- Comparable. The same method for every commodity and country, so spreads between legs and countries mean something.

How is a price verified?
Every monthly figure is computed from the customs record, checked for volume (a month below the tonnage floor is held), for movement against the previous months (a move above the threshold needs a written note) and for coverage (a country is published when it has enough months). The research desk signs off each publication.
