How the prices are assessed

Every figure is a trade-implied unit value: the customs value of a country's monthly trade in the commodity's HS code divided by the customs tonnage, from national customs statistics as compiled by UN Comtrade. Exports FOB for net exporters, imports CIF for net importers, so each country line is the leg that carries the volume. A month is published only when its tonnage clears the volume floor and the figure passes the desk's checks against the previous months and the other countries; a month that fails is held, not estimated. Each commodity page carries its own methodology note and version.

  • Monthly. Published as each country's customs statistics release, most within six to ten weeks of the month's end.
  • By country and basis. Not one global number: the FOB export value of the United States and the CIF landed value in India are different prices, and both are shown.
  • Verified, not estimated. A minimum traded volume, a written note on every unusual monthly move, enough recent months before a country is published, and a desk sign-off. A revised figure is marked and the earlier value stays in the record.
  • Comparable. The same method for every commodity and country, so spreads between legs and countries mean something.

Questions about aromatics prices

What is a commodity price by country?

The monthly unit value of a country's trade in a commodity: the customs value of the month's exports (FOB, for net exporters) or imports (CIF, for net importers) divided by the customs tonnage, from national customs statistics as compiled by UN Comtrade. It is the price the market actually cleared at on the customs record, not a quote or an estimate.

Which commodities and countries does Douglas Insights cover?

1 commodity today: Benzene. Countries with a published series: India, United States, Netherlands, Japan, Belgium, Italy, Canada, Indonesia, Brazil. Each commodity page lists its published countries and the ones still in verification; subscribers set the order in which new countries and commodities are added.

How often are the prices updated?

Monthly, as each country's customs statistics publish; most reporters release a month within six to ten weeks of its end. A month is published only after it passes the desk's checks against the previous months and the other countries; a month that fails is held, not estimated.

What is free and what needs a subscription?

Free: quarter means per country one quarter behind, a world figure a few months old, the quarter chart, the producers and the methodology. Subscribers get the current months and the newest quarter for every country, the monthly chart, spreads between any two legs, quarter and trailing averages, contract formulas, the full desk notes and CSV. How do I subscribe?

From the commodity page: choose Commodity or Group, pay by card or invoice through the same checkout as our reports, and the dashboard opens the moment the payment clears. All-access, with JSON and API feeds, is priced on request through the demo form.

How is a price verified?

Every monthly figure is computed from the customs record, checked for volume (a month below the tonnage floor is held), for movement against the previous months (a move above the threshold needs a written note) and for coverage (a country is published when it has enough months). The research desk signs off each publication.
