IDEXX Laboratories, the largest maker of veterinary tests, grew 2025 revenue 10% to USD 4,304 million and its reference laboratory revenue 6.6% to USD 1,424 million, its results filed on 2 February 2026 show, even though US clinic visits were falling. The pets diagnostic tests market covers the blood, urine, faecal, rapid, molecular and cancer tests run on dogs, cats and other companion animals, whether in a reference laboratory or on an analyser inside the clinic, valued at what laboratories and test makers realise per test. Douglas Insights sizes it at USD 7.41 billion in 2025, about 310 million tests at an average USD 23.90, and at USD 15.03 billion in 2035, a 7.33% compound annual growth rate (CAGR). The study sits in our veterinary diagnostics and devices coverage, beside the Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging Equipment Market, Veterinary Ophthalmic Equipment Market and Animal Telehealth Market reports; every figure follows the Douglas Insights research methodology.
Which pets diagnostic test segment leads: reference labs, in-clinic analysers or rapid kits?
Reference laboratory panels lead pets diagnostic tests with 40.0% of 2025 value, about USD 2.96 billion, Douglas Insights estimates. Cancer and specialty screening grows fastest, 14.5% a year to USD 1.15 billion by 2035.
| Test type | Share 2025 | Value 2025 | CAGR 2026-2035 | Value 2035 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Reference laboratory panels | 40.0% | USD 2.96 billion | 6.0% | USD 5.31 billion |
| In-clinic chemistry and haematology consumables | 30.0% | USD 2.22 billion | 8.3% | USD 4.93 billion |
| Rapid assay test kits | 14.0% | USD 1.04 billion | 4.4% | USD 1.60 billion |
| Molecular and PCR panels | 6.0% | USD 445 million | 9.4% | USD 1.09 billion |
| Urinalysis, faecal and cytology tests | 6.0% | USD 445 million | 8.9% | USD 1.04 billion |
| Cancer and specialty screening | 4.0% | USD 296 million | 14.5% | USD 1.15 billion |
Reference laboratory panels lead because a full chemistry, haematology and thyroid profile for a senior dog still goes out by courier to a central laboratory overnight. IDEXX reference laboratory revenue grew 10% in the third quarter of 2026, its results of 2 November 2026 show, and the segment grows 6.0% a year to USD 5.31 billion in our model. In-clinic chemistry and haematology consumables, USD 2.22 billion, grow 8.3% a year because each new analyser locks in years of slide, rotor and cartridge sales; IDEXX VetLab consumables rose 15% organically in the same quarter, the same filing shows.
Rapid assay test kits, the single-use heartworm, tick-borne disease, parvovirus and feline leukaemia cassettes, are worth USD 1.04 billion and grow only 4.4% a year, because they are tied to wellness visits; IDEXX rapid assay revenue rose 1% in the third quarter of 2026. Molecular and PCR panels for respiratory and diarrhoea pathogens, USD 445 million, grow 9.4%. Urinalysis, faecal and cytology tests, also USD 445 million, grow 8.9% as artificial intelligence reads urine sediment and faecal slides; Zoetis lists AI urine sediment and AI dermatology on its Vetscan Imagyst platform, its 2025 annual report on Form 10-K states. Cancer and specialty screening, USD 296 million, grows fastest: IDEXX said its Cancer Dx canine lymphoma panel was used in nearly 5,000 practices, its third-quarter 2025 prepared remarks state. Test-type values for 2035 sum to USD 15.12 billion, 0.62% above the headline.
Which pet species carries the most diagnostic test value: dogs, cats or other pets?
Dogs carry 63.0% of pets diagnostic test value in 2025, about USD 4.67 billion, Douglas Insights estimates. Cats grow faster, 8.0% a year to USD 5.28 billion by 2035, as feline kidney and thyroid screening spreads.
| Species | Share 2025 | Value 2025 | CAGR 2026-2035 | Value 2035 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dogs | 63.0% | USD 4.67 billion | 7.0% | USD 9.18 billion |
| Cats | 33.0% | USD 2.45 billion | 8.0% | USD 5.28 billion |
| Other pets (rabbits, birds, reptiles, small mammals) | 4.0% | USD 296 million | 6.2% | USD 541 million |
Dogs lead because annual heartworm and tick-borne disease screening is routine for them and rare for cats. Antech Diagnostics, part of Mars, launched its trūRapid FOUR canine vector-borne disease rapid test on 10 March 2025 and its trūRapid Reader in North America on 5 October 2026, its press-release page lists. Cats, USD 2.45 billion, grow faster because owners bring them in less often and each visit therefore carries a wider panel; Antech’s FIV and FeLV test won Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) approval on 24 October 2025, the same page shows. Other pets, USD 296 million, grow 6.2%. Species values for 2035 sum to USD 15.00 billion, 0.16% below the headline.
What drives pets diagnostic test demand: analyser placements, new panels or more pets?
Pets diagnostic test volume rises 4.2% a year in our base case, from about 310 million tests in 2025 to about 469 million in 2035. Four drivers add 5.40 points of gross growth; restraints remove 1.20 points.
Premium in-clinic analyser placements: 1.80 points
Analyser placements are the largest driver, worth 1.80 points. IDEXX placed more than 1,900 inVue Dx cellular analysers in the third quarter of 2026, taking the installed base to nearly 11,000, and its global premium instrument base grew 11%, its 2 November 2026 results show. In the fourth quarter of 2025 it placed about 1,400 new and competitive Catalyst chemistry analysers, its 2 February 2026 filing states. Douglas Insights estimates each premium analyser adds about 1,500 tests a year in a typical practice, so 6,000 placements a year add about 9 million tests.
New test menus, including cancer screening: 1.40 points
Menu expansion adds 1.40 points. IDEXX launched its Cancer Dx lymphoma blood test in North America in 2025 and plans mast cell tumour detection in 2026 and an international lymphoma launch in the first half of 2026, its 2025 Form 10-K states; by November 2026 the panel was becoming a multi-cancer test, its third-quarter release adds. A peer-reviewed study in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association validated Antech’s Accuplex tick-borne disease panel, the company announced on 15 October 2026 on its press page.
More pets and more spending per pet: 1.20 points
Pet ownership adds 1.20 points. 95 million US households own a pet, and US pet industry spending reached USD 158 billion in 2024, with USD 41.0 billion on vet care and products, the American Pet Products Association (APPA) industry statistics show; APPA projects USD 165 billion for 2026. In Europe 139 million households own a pet and the region counts 299 million pets, the European Pet Food Industry Federation (FEDIAF) Facts and Figures of 12 June 2025 state. Douglas Insights estimates older dogs and cats receive about 2.5 times as many tests a year as young ones.
Artificial intelligence and digital workflow: 1.00 point
AI tools add the last 1.00 point by turning slides and images into billable tests. Zoetis added AI Masses, which flags possibly neoplastic cells, to Vetscan Imagyst in 2025, its Form 10-K states, and Antech launched RapidRead Dental for AI review of dental radiographs on 20 May 2025, its press page lists. IDEXX bought CoVet, an AI clinical assistant, its November 2026 release notes. Summed, 1.80 + 1.40 + 1.20 + 1.00 = 5.40 points, a Douglas Insights estimate.
What are the restraints on pets diagnostic tests: fewer clinic visits or price pushback?
Two restraints remove 1.20 points a year from pets diagnostic test volume: falling clinic visits take 0.70 points, and owner pushback on vet prices takes 0.50 points.
Fewer visits are the heavier restraint. US same-store clinical visits fell 1.2% in the third quarter of 2025, with wellness visits down 2.5% and other visits down about 0.3%, IDEXX’s prepared remarks show. Wellness visits carry most rapid assay and screening panels, which is why IDEXX rapid assay revenue grew only 1% in the third quarter of 2026 while its consumables grew 15%, its filing shows. Douglas Insights estimates each 1% drop in wellness visits removes about 1.4 million tests a year worldwide.
Price pushback takes 0.50 points. The US consumer price index for veterinarian services rose 7.1% in the 12 months to December 2025 and 4.6% in the 12 months to September 2026, the Bureau of Labor Statistics series CUUR0000SS62054 shows. In the UK, vet prices rose 63% between January 2016 and December 2023 against 32% general inflation, and some vets default to the most comprehensive tests, the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) final report found. Owners who decline a full panel buy a cheaper rapid test or none.
Which region spends the most on pets diagnostic tests, and where is growth fastest?
North America spends the most on pets diagnostic tests, USD 3.85 billion or 52.0% of 2025 value, because clinic analysers and reference labs are densest there. Asia Pacific grows fastest, 9.6% a year to USD 2.41 billion by 2035.
| Region | Value 2025 | Share 2025 | Value 2026 | CAGR 2026-2035 | Value 2035 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| North America | USD 3.85 billion | 52.0% | USD 4.12 billion | 6.8% | USD 7.44 billion |
| Europe | USD 2.00 billion | 27.0% | USD 2.14 billion | 6.9% | USD 3.90 billion |
| Asia Pacific | USD 963 million | 13.0% | USD 1.06 billion | 9.6% | USD 2.41 billion |
| Latin America | USD 371 million | 5.0% | USD 403 million | 8.8% | USD 861 million |
| Middle East and Africa | USD 222 million | 3.0% | USD 241 million | 8.3% | USD 493 million |
North America leads on installed instruments and laboratory courier networks. IDEXX’s US CAG Diagnostics recurring revenue grew 10% in the third quarter of 2026, its results show, and the region grows 6.8% a year to USD 7.44 billion in our model, held back by flat visit counts. In Canada, CFIA approval of Antech’s trūRapid FOUR and FIV/FeLV tests on 24 October 2025 widened the rapid kit choice, its press page shows.
Europe, USD 2.00 billion, grows 6.9% to USD 3.90 billion. Zoetis bought the Veterinary Pathology Group, a UK and Ireland laboratory network, in 2025, its Form 10-K states, and UK owners spent GBP 6.7 billion on vet services in 2024, the CMA report notes. Asia Pacific, USD 963 million, grows fastest as clinics in China, Japan and Australia add in-house analysers; IDEXX international CAG Diagnostics recurring revenue grew 14% organically in the third quarter of 2026, faster than the US. Latin America, USD 371 million, grows 8.8% from Brazil and Mexico, and the Middle East and Africa, USD 222 million, grow 8.3% from Gulf clinic chains, Douglas Insights estimates. Regional values sum to USD 7.95 billion in 2026 and USD 15.10 billion in 2035, 0.50% above the headline.
Which companies dominate pets diagnostic tests?
IDEXX Laboratories holds about 45% of pets diagnostic test value, Douglas Insights estimates; with Antech (Mars) and Zoetis the top three hold about 75%. Zomedica, Heska and regional laboratories share the rest.
| Company | Diagnostics position | Latest reported figure | Source date |
|---|---|---|---|
| IDEXX Laboratories | Reference labs, Catalyst and inVue Dx analysers, SNAP rapid tests | Q3 2026 revenue USD 1,214 million, up 10% | 2 November 2026 |
| Antech Diagnostics (Mars) | Reference labs, trūRapid kits, RapidRead AI | Private; trūRapid Reader launched | 5 October 2026 |
| Zoetis | Vetscan analysers, Imagyst AI, Veterinary Pathology Group | 2025 diagnostics revenue USD 434 million | 2025 Form 10-K |
| Zomedica | TRUFORMA, TRUVIEW, VETGuardian | 2025 diagnostics revenue USD 2.8 million | 16 March 2026 |
| Heska (part of Mars) | Point-of-care analysers | No separate figures disclosed | Douglas Insights estimate |
IDEXX sets the pace through a razor-and-blade model: once a practice installs Catalyst and inVue Dx analysers it buys slides and cartridges for years. Its 2026 guidance, raised in November, calls for CAG Diagnostics recurring revenue growth of 10.3% to 11.0% organic and total revenue of USD 4,741 million to USD 4,767 million, its third-quarter release shows. The company also changed chief executive, with Mike Erickson now in the role, the same release notes. Douglas Insights puts IDEXX’s share at about 45%, from its reference laboratory revenue of USD 1,424 million plus its in-clinic and rapid consumables.
Zoetis is the third force. Its animal health diagnostics revenue rose from USD 386 million in 2024 to USD 434 million in 2025, about 12% growth that includes the Veterinary Pathology Group purchase, against total revenue of USD 9,467 million, its Form 10-K shows. Antech, owned by Mars, does not publish revenue but released at least 5 new tests and tools between March 2025 and October 2026, its press page lists. Zomedica, a small challenger, grew 2025 diagnostics revenue 15% to USD 2.8 million, its results of 16 March 2026 show. In the UK, six groups including CVS, Linnaeus and Medivet own more than 60% of practices, up from about 10% in 2013, and several run their own laboratories, the CMA report found.
How much does a pet diagnostic test cost, from a rapid kit to a reference panel?
A pets diagnostic test realises an average USD 23.90 to the laboratory or test maker in 2025, Douglas Insights estimates, from about USD 12 for a rapid assay cassette to USD 40 to USD 90 for a full reference panel.
Test makers raise prices every year. IDEXX expects about 4% of its 2026 CAG Diagnostics recurring growth to come from net price, its February 2026 guidance states, after net price improvement of 4% to 4.5% globally in 2025, its third-quarter 2025 remarks show. Clinics mark tests up 2 to 3 times before they reach the owner, a Douglas Insights estimate, so a USD 30 laboratory panel appears on an invoice at USD 75 to USD 100.
Price rises slow in our base case to 3.0% a year, lifting the average to about USD 32.10 in 2035. Two forces cap it: US veterinarian service prices rose 4.6% in the year to September 2026, down from 7.8% in the year to September 2025, the Bureau of Labor Statistics series shows, and UK practices must now publish standard price lists that include some diagnostics, give written estimates for treatment of GBP 500 or more and cap written prescription fees at GBP 21 for the first item, the CMA said in its decision of 24 March 2026.
What if clinic visits keep falling or analysers spread faster: what is the 2035 forecast?
The pets diagnostic tests market ends 2035 between USD 12.14 billion and USD 17.86 billion across our three cases, around a base of USD 15.03 billion. Visit trends and analyser placements set most of the spread.
| Case | Test volume leg | Price leg | Revenue rate | 2035 value |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Slower | 3.00% | 2.00% | 5.06% | USD 12.14 billion |
| Base case | 4.20% | 3.00% | 7.33% | USD 15.03 billion |
| Faster | 5.20% | 3.80% | 9.20% | USD 17.86 billion |
In the slower case US wellness visits keep falling at about 2.5% a year, price transparency rules spread from the UK to other markets and owners trade down to single rapid tests, taking 1.2 points off volume and 1.0 point off price. In the faster case inVue Dx and Imagyst-style AI analysers reach most mid-size practices, multi-cancer screening becomes part of the senior wellness visit and Asia Pacific clinics keep adding analysers, adding 1.0 point of volume and 0.8 points of price. One extra point of yearly revenue growth adds about USD 1.46 billion to 2035 value, a Douglas Insights estimate.
Live signals sit at or above the base case. IDEXX raised its 2026 guidance in November, its consumables grew 15% and its premium base grew 11%, its 2 November 2026 release shows, while rapid assays grew only 1%, which keeps the volume leg near 4.2% rather than higher. The signal to watch is the US wellness visit count in IDEXX’s quarterly remarks.
Which rules govern pets diagnostic tests, from USDA licensing to the UK CMA order?
Three rule sets govern pets diagnostic tests: US Department of Agriculture licensing of biological test kits, food and disease safety rules that create testing demand, and new price transparency law for UK vets.
Licensing rules decide which kits reach clinics. In the US, diagnostic kits for animal infectious diseases are licensed by the USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) Center for Veterinary Biologics, which publishes its licence issues in regular notices; Notice 25-05, covering July to September 2025, listed no new canine or feline diagnostic kits. In Canada the Canadian Food Inspection Agency approves kits, as it did for Antech’s tests on 24 October 2025, the company’s press page shows.
Disease and food rules add testing work. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Center for Veterinary Medicine required makers of cat and dog food that use raw poultry or cattle ingredients to treat H5N1 avian influenza as a known hazard, in a notice issued on 17 January 2025 and updated on 30 September 2025, and linked H5N1 cases in cats to food in California, Colorado, Oregon and Washington, its update states. Each suspected feline case adds PCR work for laboratories.
Price rules are newest. The CMA’s order of 24 March 2026 requires UK practices to publish standard prices, itemise bills and disclose group ownership, with orders due by 23 September 2026 and remedies phased in over 3 to 12 months, its announcement states. A levy to fund the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) began on 21 August 2026 at GBP 349.43 per practice, the CMA’s notice of making an order shows.
Douglas Exclusive: the In-Clinic Shift Ledger for pets diagnostic tests
The In-Clinic Shift Ledger is a Douglas Insights model built from 14 inputs: 10 company filings or releases, 2 government documents and 2 association datasets. It tracks how fast pets diagnostic test value moves from laboratories to clinic analysers.
| Date | Input | What it moves |
|---|---|---|
| 10 March 2025 | Antech: trūRapid FOUR launch | Rapid kit supply |
| 12 June 2025 | FEDIAF: 139 million pet-owning households in Europe | Pet base |
| Q3 2025 | IDEXX: US clinical visits down 1.2% | Visit demand |
| 24 October 2025 | Antech: CFIA approval in Canada | Rapid kit supply |
| December 2025 | BLS: vet services prices up 7.1% | Price ceiling |
| 2 February 2026 | IDEXX: FY2025 reference lab USD 1,424 million | Laboratory value |
| 12 February 2026 | Zoetis: FY2025 results | Analyser value |
| 20 February 2026 | IDEXX Form 10-K: Cancer Dx roadmap | Specialty menu |
| 2025 Form 10-K | Zoetis: diagnostics USD 434 million | Analyser value |
| 16 March 2026 | Zomedica: diagnostics USD 2.8 million | Challenger value |
| 24 March 2026 | CMA: price transparency order | Price ceiling |
| 2026 | APPA: 95 million US pet households | Pet base |
| 5 October 2026 | Antech: trūRapid Reader launch | In-clinic reading |
| 2 November 2026 | IDEXX: consumables up 15%, labs up 10%, rapid up 1% | Channel split |
The finding, a Douglas Insights estimate: in-clinic consumables grew about 5 points a year faster than reference laboratories in IDEXX’s latest quarter, and about 14 points faster than rapid kits. Carried through our model, in-clinic chemistry and haematology rises from 30.0% of value in 2025 to 32.8% in 2035, while rapid kits fall from 14.0% to 10.6% and reference panels from 40.0% to 35.3%.
The ledger changes how to read the market. A laboratory network that counts only courier volume will see slow growth, while an analyser maker with a large installed base captures most of the gain. Douglas Insights therefore forecasts value by channel, not only by test count, and treats each analyser placement as a decade-long consumables stream.
How does the methodology turn 310 million tests into USD 7.41 billion?
How this report is built
- Every figure carries a confidence grade in the fact sheet above, and the working model ships with every licence.
- Five regional models sum to the global figure, with country tables in the Excel model.
- The next scheduled review of this study is May 2027.
- Licence holders receive it as a maintained tab in the Excel model.
Our methodology multiplies about 310 million pets diagnostic tests in 2025 by an average USD 23.90 each to reach USD 7.41 billion, then grows tests 4.2% and price 3.0% a year.
The model covers 6 test types, 3 species groups and 5 regions, using 58 data points, 24 sourced and 34 modelled. Tests come from a regional build: about 160 million in North America, 85 million in Europe, 40 million in Asia Pacific, 15 million in Latin America and 10 million in the Middle East and Africa, Douglas Insights estimates drawn from APPA and FEDIAF household counts, IDEXX laboratory and consumables revenue and an assumed 2.2 tests per dog and 1.6 per cat visiting a clinic each year. Arithmetic: 310 million x USD 23.90 = USD 7.41 billion; USD 7.41 billion x (1.042 x 1.030)^10 = USD 15.03 billion. Tests reach about 323 million in 2026 and 469 million in 2035.
Two cross-checks agree. First, IDEXX’s 2025 reference laboratory revenue of USD 1,424 million plus its estimated in-clinic and rapid consumables gives a company total near USD 3.3 billion, about 45% of our market, consistent with its leading position. Second, Zoetis’s USD 434 million of diagnostics revenue equals about 6% of our 2025 value, in line with its third-place rank. AI tools help draft the text and automated checks test the arithmetic and links; the Douglas Insights research desk chooses the sources, builds the model and approves publication, as our editorial standards explain.
