Periodontal disease is the most commonly diagnosed disease in UK cats, found in 15.2% of them each year, the Royal Veterinary College’s VetCompass study of 16 March 2023 shows, yet only 19 cat products carry the Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC) seal, its accepted products table of 5 August 2026 lists. The cat oral care products market covers dental treats and chews, dental diets, water additives and food powders, toothpastes, brushes and gels, and wipes and sprays sold for cats. Douglas Insights sizes it at USD 1.48 billion in 2025, about 380 million owned cats at an average oral care spend of USD 3.90 each, and at USD 2.67 billion in 2035, a 6.07% compound annual growth rate (CAGR). The study sits in our pet care coverage, beside the Pet Food Market, Pet Nutritional Supplement Market and Nordic Pet Care Market reports; every figure follows the Douglas Insights research methodology.
Which cat oral care product earns the most: dental treats, dental diets, water additives or toothpaste?
Dental treats and chews earn the most, 46.0% of 2025 value or about USD 682 million, Douglas Insights estimates. Water additives and food powders grow fastest, 7.2% a year to USD 297 million by 2035.
| Product type | Share 2025 | Value 2025 | CAGR 2026-2035 | Value 2035 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dental treats and chews | 46.0% | USD 682 million | 6.0% | USD 1.22 billion |
| Dental diets | 30.0% | USD 445 million | 5.6% | USD 767 million |
| Water additives and food powders | 10.0% | USD 148 million | 7.2% | USD 297 million |
| Toothpastes, brushes and gels | 9.0% | USD 133 million | 6.9% | USD 260 million |
| Wipes, sprays and other | 5.0% | USD 74 million | 6.5% | USD 139 million |
Treats lead because they need no change in a cat’s routine. Four treats hold the VOHC seal for cats: Feline Greenies for tartar since 2005, Purina DentaLife since 2016, Whiskas Dentabites since 2017 and Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets Dental Bites for plaque and tartar since 2019, the VOHC cat table shows. Chewy sells a 4.6 oz pack of Greenies Feline at USD 5.48, its product page shows. Treat value grows 6.0% a year to USD 1.22 billion, a Douglas Insights estimate.
Dental diets, USD 445 million, grow 5.6%. Seven diets hold the seal, including Hill’s Prescription Diet t/d, Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets DH and Royal Canin Feline Dental, and Hill’s Science Plan Vet Essentials Multi-Benefit + Dental joined the list in 2026. Water additives and powders, USD 148 million, grow fastest at 7.2% because owners pour them rather than handle the cat; HealthyMouth water additives and ProDen PlaqueOff powder, sold by SwedenCare and Ceva, carry plaque seals. Toothpastes, brushes and gels, USD 133 million, grow 6.9% on veterinary advice, and wipes and sprays, USD 74 million, grow 6.5%. Product values for 2035 sum to USD 2.68 billion, 0.45% above the headline.
Where is cat oral care bought: online, pet stores, vet clinics or supermarkets?
Online stores sell the most cat oral care, 31.0% of 2025 value or about USD 459 million, Douglas Insights estimates, and grow fastest, 8.2% a year to USD 1.01 billion by 2035.
| Channel | Share 2025 | Value 2025 | CAGR 2026-2035 | Value 2035 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Online stores | 31.0% | USD 459 million | 8.2% | USD 1.01 billion |
| Pet specialty stores | 30.0% | USD 445 million | 4.6% | USD 697 million |
| Supermarkets and mass retail | 21.0% | USD 311 million | 4.9% | USD 502 million |
| Veterinary clinics | 18.0% | USD 267 million | 5.8% | USD 469 million |
Online leads because dental treats and diets are repeat purchases suited to subscriptions. Chewy grew fiscal 2025 net sales 6.2% to USD 12.60 billion, with Autoship sales of about USD 10.50 billion, 83.3% of the total, and 21.3 million active customers, its results of 25 March 2026 show. Online share rises from 31.0% to about 38% by 2035, a Douglas Insights estimate.
Pet specialty stores, USD 445 million, grow only 4.6% as store traffic shifts online; Petco’s fiscal 2025 net sales fell 2.5% to USD 5.96 billion, with comparable sales down 1.6%, its results of 11 March 2026 show. Supermarkets, USD 311 million, grow 4.9% on Whiskas and Purina treats. Veterinary clinics, USD 267 million, grow 5.8% because prescription dental diets and enzymatic toothpastes start in the exam room; Zoetis grew companion animal revenue 5% to USD 6.59 billion in 2025, its results release shows. Channel values for 2035 sum to USD 2.68 billion, 0.25% above the headline.
What drives cat oral care demand: dental disease, more cats or e-commerce?
Cat oral care revenue rises 6.07% a year in our base case, from USD 1.48 billion in 2025 to USD 2.67 billion in 2035. Four drivers add 7.10 points of gross growth; two restraints remove 1.03 points.
Widespread dental disease and vet diagnosis: 1.90 points
Disease burden adds 1.90 points. VetCompass found 15.2% of 18,249 sampled UK cats were diagnosed with periodontal disease in 2019, about 1.8 million cats a year, the RVC release of 16 March 2023 states, and 64% of cats seen at Banfield hospitals in 2023 had dental-related issues, its release of 15 February 2024 shows. A study of extractions found periodontitis behind 33.41% and gingivostomatitis behind 32.40% of feline tooth removals, Frontiers in Veterinary Science reported on 14 July 2025. Douglas Insights estimates each newly diagnosed cat lifts household oral care spend by about USD 25 in its first year.
More cats, led by China and the United States: 2.10 points
Cat ownership is the largest driver, worth 2.10 points. Urban China had 72.89 million pet cats against 53.43 million dogs in 2025, the USDA Shanghai office’s pet food update of 14 April 2026 shows, citing the 2026 China Pet Industry White Paper. US cat-owning households rose 5% to 53 million, 39% of all households, the American Pet Products Association (APPA) said on 26 March 2026. Europe counted 110.9 million cats in 2024, FEDIAF Facts & Figures 2026 shows. Douglas Insights estimates the owned cat population grows 1.6% a year, from 380 million to about 445 million in 2035.
Proven products and the veterinary channel: 1.40 points
Products with clinical proof add 1.40 points by giving vets something to recommend. The VOHC seal needs 2 trials, each showing at least a 15% cut in plaque or tartar and together averaging at least 20%, its protocol states, and the AAHA 2019 dental care guidelines recommend VOHC-accepted products for home care. Virbac grew companion animal sales 10.9% at constant rates in 2025 and North American companion animal sales 24.2%, citing “dental, dermatology, and specialty ranges”, in its release of 19 January 2026.
E-commerce and subscriptions: 1.70 points
Online repeat ordering adds the last 1.70 points. Chewy’s Autoship reached 83.3% of its USD 12.60 billion of fiscal 2025 sales, its 25 March 2026 results show, and US pet industry spending reached USD 158 billion in 2025, up 3.7%, with USD 165 billion projected for 2026, APPA reports. Douglas Insights estimates a subscribed dental treat buyer orders 9 packs a year against 4 for a store buyer. Summed, 1.90 + 2.10 + 1.40 + 1.70 = 7.10 points, a Douglas Insights estimate.
What holds cat oral care back: cats that resist brushing or limits on dental claims?
Two restraints remove 1.03 points a year from cat oral care growth: low owner compliance with brushing and handling takes 0.58 points, and legal limits on dental claims and price-sensitive buyers take 0.45 points.
Compliance is the heavier drag because the most effective home care, daily brushing, is the hardest to do with a cat. The AAHA guidelines say that “by three years of age, most dogs and cats have some level of periodontal disease”, the 2019 guidance states, yet Douglas Insights estimates fewer than 1 in 10 cat owners brushes weekly. A C.E.T. enzymatic toothpaste and brush kit costs USD 18.88 on Chewy, and many kits go unused after a few weeks.
Claim limits and price take 0.45 points. US pet food dental claims based on “abrasive or mechanical actions are not objectionable”, but chemical plaque or tartar claims need an approved New Animal Drug Application or a favourable FDA review, the AAFCO dental claims minutes of 24 April 2017 state. Price-sensitive buyers also trade down: Nestlé’s Purina PetCare had pricing of minus 0.4% in 2025, its results of 19 February 2026 show.
Which region buys the most cat oral care, and where does demand grow fastest?
North America buys the most cat oral care, USD 563 million or 38.0% of 2025 value. Asia Pacific grows fastest, 8.6% a year to USD 812 million by 2035, led by Chinese cat owners.
| Region | Value 2025 | Share 2025 | Value 2026 | CAGR 2026-2035 | Value 2035 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| North America | USD 563 million | 38.0% | USD 591 million | 5.0% | USD 917 million |
| Europe | USD 445 million | 30.0% | USD 466 million | 4.9% | USD 717 million |
| Asia Pacific | USD 356 million | 24.0% | USD 386 million | 8.6% | USD 812 million |
| Latin America | USD 74 million | 5.0% | USD 79 million | 7.0% | USD 146 million |
| Middle East and Africa | USD 44 million | 3.0% | USD 48 million | 7.2% | USD 89 million |
North America leads on spend per cat. Its 53 million cat-owning households sit in a USD 158 billion pet economy, APPA reports, and Hill’s Pet Nutrition, maker of t/d, grew 2025 net sales 2.9% to USD 4.61 billion, Colgate-Palmolive’s filing shows. Regional value grows 5.0% a year to USD 917 million.
Europe, USD 445 million, grows 4.9%; FEDIAF counts 110.9 million cats and EUR 29.4 billion of 2024 pet food sales in its 2026 edition, and 24% of UK adults own one of 11.3 million cats, the PDSA Animal Wellbeing Report 2026 shows. Asia Pacific, USD 356 million, grows fastest: China’s pet consumption reached about RMB 312.6 billion, up 4.1%, the USDA report shows, while Japan’s cats fell to 8.85 million from 9.16 million, PetfoodIndustry reported on 19 February 2026 from the Japan Pet Food Association survey. Latin America grows 7.0% and the Middle East and Africa 7.2%. Regional values sum to USD 1.57 billion in 2026 and USD 2.68 billion in 2035, 0.36% above the headline.
Which companies lead the cat oral care market?
Mars Petcare leads cat oral care with about 24% of 2025 value through Greenies Feline, Whiskas Dentabites and Royal Canin Feline Dental, Douglas Insights estimates, ahead of Nestlé Purina at about 18% and Hill’s at about 11%.
| Company | Cat oral care brands | Latest reported figure | Source date |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mars Petcare | Feline Greenies, Whiskas Dentabites, Royal Canin Feline Dental | Private; 3 VOHC cat seals | 5 August 2026 |
| Nestlé Purina PetCare | DentaLife, Pro Plan Veterinary Diets DH and Dental Bites | 2025 sales CHF 18.41 billion, organic growth 2.2% | 19 February 2026 |
| Hill’s Pet Nutrition (Colgate-Palmolive) | Prescription Diet t/d, Science Diet Oral Care | 2025 net sales USD 4.61 billion, up 2.9% | 2025 filing |
| Virbac | C.E.T. toothpaste and chews | 2025 revenue EUR 1.47 billion, up 7.9% at constant rates | 19 January 2026 |
| SwedenCare and Ceva | ProDen PlaqueOff | VOHC plaque seal | 5 August 2026 |
| HealthyMouth | Water additive, gel, spray, wipes | VOHC plaque seals | 5 August 2026 |
Mars publishes no Petcare figures, so its lead rests on the VOHC list and shelf presence; Douglas Insights estimates Feline Greenies alone at about 13% of world value. Nestlé’s Purina PetCare had 2025 sales of CHF 18.41 billion, against CHF 18.88 billion in 2024, with organic growth of 2.2% and real internal growth of 2.6%, its results of 19 February 2026 show. Hill’s grew third-quarter 2026 sales 5.6% to USD 1.21 billion with organic growth of 5.7%, PetfoodIndustry reported on 30 October 2026.
Virbac’s 2025 revenue reached EUR 1.47 billion, up 4.8% at actual rates, its 19 January 2026 release shows, with dental among its growth ranges. Virbac, SwedenCare, Ceva, HealthyMouth, Chinese makers and retailer private labels share the remaining 47%, a Douglas Insights estimate.
How much does cat oral care cost, from a USD 5 treat pack to a prescription dental diet?
Cat owners spend an average USD 3.90 per owned cat on oral care in 2025, Douglas Insights estimates, from USD 5.48 for a Greenies Feline pack to USD 35.99 for a 4 lb bag of Hill’s t/d.
The price ladder follows format and clinical claim. A 4.6 oz Greenies Feline pack costs USD 5.48, about USD 42.00 a kilogram, on Chewy, while a 4 lb bag of Hill’s Prescription Diet t/d Feline costs USD 35.99, about USD 19.84 a kilogram, or USD 34.19 on Autoship, its listing shows. A Virbac C.E.T. enzymatic toothpaste of 70 g with a brush sells for USD 18.88, and a 2.5 oz catnip Greenies pack was USD 2.49, Chewy shows.
Spend per cat rises 4.4% a year in the base case, to about USD 6.00 in 2035, from wider use rather than higher list prices. Purina’s pricing fell 0.4% in 2025 while real internal growth was 2.6%, its results show, so mix and penetration carry the leg. Douglas Insights estimates about 3.4 points of the 4.4 come from more households buying and 1.0 point from premium formats such as veterinary diets and enzymatic gels.
What if more owners treat or price pressure deepens: how large is cat oral care in 2035?
The cat oral care market ends 2035 between USD 2.16 billion and USD 3.18 billion across our three cases, around a base of USD 2.67 billion. Owner uptake and cat numbers in China set most of the spread.
| Case | Cat leg | Spend per cat leg | Revenue rate | 2035 value |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Slower | 1.00% | 2.80% | 3.83% | USD 2.16 billion |
| Base case | 1.60% | 4.40% | 6.07% | USD 2.67 billion |
| Faster | 2.20% | 5.60% | 7.92% | USD 3.18 billion |
In the slower case China’s cat growth halves and owners trade down to unsealed treats, cutting 0.6 points of cats and 1.6 points of spend. In the faster case vets add home oral care to every annual check-up and Chinese owners adopt dental diets, adding 0.6 points of cats and 1.2 points of spend. One extra point of yearly revenue growth adds about USD 265 million to 2035 value, a Douglas Insights estimate.
Live signals sit near the base case. Hill’s 5.7% organic growth in the third quarter of 2026 and APPA’s 5% rise in cat households point up; Purina’s negative pricing points to a cautious buyer. The signal to watch is the VOHC cat list: if it passes 25 products by 2028, Douglas Insights would read that as faster veterinary adoption. A second signal is the next China Pet Industry White Paper: urban cats above 78 million in 2026 would move Asia Pacific toward the faster case.
Which rules shape cat dental claims, from AAFCO guidance to EU feed law and VOHC trials?
Three rule sets shape cat oral care: US limits on dental claims for pet food and treats, EU feed law that has no dental dietetic purpose for cats, and China’s pet feed rules that ban disease claims.
The US layer splits mechanical from chemical action. Plaque, tartar or breath claims achieved by chemical means need an approved New Animal Drug Application or a favourable FDA letter, and claims to prevent or treat dental disease are not allowed without one, the AAFCO minutes of 24 April 2017 record, with FDA’s Center for Veterinary Medicine present. The voluntary VOHC seal fills the proof gap with 2 controlled trials at 15% and 20% thresholds, its protocol states.
In Europe, the list of feeds for particular nutritional purposes for dogs and cats in Commission Regulation (EU) 2020/354 covers kidney, urinary, diabetes, digestive, liver, heart, weight, skin, joint, stress and thyroid support but no oral or dental purpose, so dental diets sell as complementary or complete feeds with general claims. China’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs Announcement No. 20 has applied to dog and cat feed since 1 June 2018 and prohibits “description or promotion on the prevention or treatment of pet diseases”, a Keller and Heckman summary notes, which Douglas Insights reads as limiting Chinese labels to cleaning and breath language.
Douglas Exclusive: the Feline Dental Treatment Gap
The Feline Dental Treatment Gap is a Douglas Insights model of 12 inputs: 4 clinical sources, 2 VOHC records, 4 population and spending statistics and 2 company reports, listed below. It compares cats with dental disease against what owners spend.
| Date | Input | What it moves |
|---|---|---|
| 2019 | AAHA: most cats have periodontal disease by age 3 | Clinical need |
| 16 March 2023 | RVC VetCompass: 15.2% of UK cats a year | Diagnosis rate |
| 15 February 2024 | Banfield: 64% of cats with dental issues | Clinical need |
| 14 July 2025 | Frontiers: periodontitis 33.41% of extractions | Severity |
| 19 February 2026 | Nestlé: Purina pricing minus 0.4% | Price leg |
| 26 March 2026 | APPA: 53 million US cat households | Cat leg |
| 25 March 2026 | Chewy: Autoship 83.3% of sales | Repeat buying |
| 14 April 2026 | USDA: 72.89 million urban cats in China | Cat leg |
| 2026 | FEDIAF: 110.9 million cats in Europe | Cat leg |
| 2026 | PDSA: 11.3 million UK cats | Cat leg |
| 5 August 2026 | VOHC: 19 accepted cat products | Proven supply |
| 2026 | VOHC: 15% per trial, 20% mean | Proof standard |
The finding, a Douglas Insights estimate: if 64% of the world’s 380 million owned cats have some dental issue, as Banfield found in its hospitals, about 243 million cats need home care. Spread over them, USD 1.48 billion of 2025 spend is about USD 6.10 a cat a year, against about USD 100 for a year of daily sealed treats or a dental diet top-up. Only about 6% of affected cats get a full daily regimen.
The gap changes how to read the market. Growth will come less from new product types than from moving owners from occasional to routine buying, which favours subscriptions and vet-recommended sealed products. Each 1 point rise in the share of affected cats on a daily regimen adds about USD 240 million of yearly spend, Douglas Insights estimates.
How does the methodology turn 380 million cats into USD 1.48 billion?
How this report is built
- Every figure carries a confidence grade in the fact sheet above, and the working model ships with every licence.
- Five regional models sum to the global figure, with country tables in the Excel model.
- The next scheduled review of this study is May 2027.
- Licence holders receive it as a maintained tab in the Excel model.
Our methodology multiplies about 380 million owned cats in 2025 by an average oral care spend of USD 3.90 per cat to reach USD 1.48 billion, then grows cats 1.6% a year and spend per cat 4.4% a year.
The model covers 5 product types, 4 channels and 5 regions, using 60 data points, 22 sourced and 38 modelled. Cats come from a regional build: about 95 million in North America, 111 million in Europe, 130 million in Asia Pacific, 30 million in Latin America and 14 million in the Middle East and Africa, Douglas Insights estimates anchored on the FEDIAF, APPA, USDA and Japan Pet Food Association counts. Spend per cat ranges from about USD 5.90 in North America to about USD 2.70 in Asia Pacific. Arithmetic: 380 million x USD 3.90 = USD 1.48 billion; USD 1.48 billion x (1.016 x 1.044)^10 = USD 2.67 billion. Cats reach about 386 million in 2026 and 445 million in 2035.
Two cross-checks agree. First, our 11% Hill’s share implies about USD 163 million of cat dental sales, about 3.5% of its USD 4.61 billion of 2025 net sales, plausible for t/d and Oral Care lines. Second, our 18% Purina share implies about USD 267 million, about 1.2% of its CHF 18.41 billion of sales at a Douglas Insights rate of USD 1.25 per franc, in line with DentaLife, DH and Dental Bites being niche lines in a large portfolio. AI tools help draft the text and automated checks test the arithmetic and links; the Douglas Insights research desk chooses the sources, builds the model and approves publication, as our editorial standards explain.
