India exported about 49,587 tonnes of cellulose derivatives under HS 391290 in 2025, worth USD 137.18 million, up from about 41,059 tonnes and USD 110.22 million in 2024, UN Comtrade data show, and microcrystalline cellulose is the bulk of that trade. The microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) market covers purified, partly depolymerised wood or cotton cellulose sold as a tablet binder and filler, a food stabiliser (E 460(i)), a cosmetic texturiser and an industrial additive. Douglas Insights sizes it at USD 656 million in 2025, about 160,000 tonnes at an average USD 4.10 a kilogram, and at USD 1.13 billion in 2035, a 5.55% compound annual growth rate (CAGR). The study sits beside our Gelatin Substitutes Market, Mouthfeel Enhancing Ingredient Market and Pharmaceutical Grade Sodium Carbonate Market reports; every figure follows the Douglas Insights research methodology.
Which MCC grade earns the most: standard pharma powder, co-processed, colloidal or food powder?
Standard pharmaceutical MCC powder earns the most, 46.0% of 2025 value or about USD 302 million, Douglas Insights estimates. Co-processed and silicified grades grow fastest, 8.0% a year to USD 170 million by 2035.
| Grade | Share 2025 | Value 2025 | CAGR 2026-2035 | Value 2035 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard pharmaceutical MCC powder (PH 101, PH 102 and similar) | 46.0% | USD 302 million | 5.0% | USD 492 million |
| Co-processed and silicified MCC | 12.0% | USD 78.7 million | 8.0% | USD 170 million |
| Colloidal MCC (MCC with carboxymethylcellulose) | 20.0% | USD 131 million | 5.0% | USD 214 million |
| Food, nutraceutical and industrial powder | 22.0% | USD 144 million | 5.5% | USD 247 million |
Standard powder leads because almost every direct-compression tablet line uses it as the main filler and dry binder. Grades with a mean particle size of about 50 microns serve wet granulation, and coarser 100-micron grades flow better on high-speed presses, a Douglas Insights estimate. Indian producers such as Sigachi Industries and Accent Microcell sell mostly these grades, and their exports drive the 20.8% rise in Indian tonnage between 2024 and 2025 shown by UN Comtrade. Standard powder value grows 5.0% a year to USD 492 million.
Co-processed and silicified MCC, USD 78.7 million, grows 8.0% because blending MCC with about 2% colloidal silicon dioxide, lactose or mannitol at the particle level lets a formulator skip granulation steps. Colloidal MCC, USD 131 million, is spray-dried with carboxymethylcellulose so it disperses into a gel network that keeps cocoa, protein or pharmaceutical suspensions from settling; it grows 5.0%. Food, nutraceutical and industrial powder, USD 144 million, grows 5.5% on supplement tablets, anti-caking uses in shredded cheese and fat replacement. Grade values for 2035 sum to USD 1.12 billion, 0.38% below the headline.
Where does microcrystalline cellulose go: tablets, supplements, food, cosmetics or industry?
Pharmaceutical tablets and capsules take the most microcrystalline cellulose, 60.0% of 2025 value or about USD 394 million, Douglas Insights estimates. Nutraceuticals and supplements grow fastest, 6.5% a year to USD 123 million by 2035.
| Application | Share 2025 | Value 2025 | CAGR 2026-2035 | Value 2035 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pharmaceutical tablets and capsules | 60.0% | USD 394 million | 5.4% | USD 666 million |
| Nutraceuticals and dietary supplements | 10.0% | USD 65.6 million | 6.5% | USD 123 million |
| Food and beverages | 22.0% | USD 144 million | 5.4% | USD 244 million |
| Cosmetics and personal care | 4.0% | USD 26.2 million | 5.5% | USD 44.8 million |
| Industrial and other (ceramics, coatings, 3D printing) | 4.0% | USD 26.2 million | 4.5% | USD 40.7 million |
Tablets dominate because MCC is often 20% to 90% of a direct-compression tablet’s weight, so a single generic plant pressing 5 billion tablets a year of 300 milligrams each can use about 400 to 600 tonnes, a Douglas Insights estimate. Capsule fills and pellet cores, made by extrusion and spheronisation, add further tonnage. Tablet and capsule value grows 5.4% a year to USD 666 million as generic volumes in India, China and the United States rise.
Supplements, USD 65.6 million, grow 6.5% on multivitamin, probiotic and botanical tablets that need a clean, plant-derived filler. Food and beverages, USD 144 million, grow 5.4% on colloidal grades in plant-based milks, whipped toppings and sauces, and on powder grades as an anti-caking agent. Cosmetics, USD 26.2 million, grow 5.5% as MCC replaces plastic microbeads in scrubs and texturises creams. Industrial uses, USD 26.2 million, grow 4.5%. Application values for 2035 sum to USD 1.12 billion, 0.64% below the headline.
What drives microcrystalline cellulose demand: medicine volumes, Indian capacity, direct compression or clean-label food?
MCC tonnage rises 4.3% a year in our base case, from about 160,000 tonnes in 2025 to about 244,000 tonnes in 2035. Four drivers add 4.90 points of gross growth; three restraints remove 0.60 points.
Medicine volumes: 1.40 points
Rising medicine use is the largest driver, worth 1.40 points. World medicine use is approaching 4 trillion defined daily doses and is set to grow 2.7% a year in volume, or 1.9% per person, while spending passes USD 2.6 trillion by 2030, the IQVIA Institute’s Global Medicine Use Trends 2026, published on 11 February 2026, states. Most of that growth comes in oral solid generics, the heaviest MCC users. Douglas Insights estimates that each 1% of extra oral solid volume adds about 1,000 tonnes of MCC demand, and that tablets grow about half a point faster than total doses as liquid and injectable shares slip in emerging markets.
Indian and Chinese export capacity: 1.30 points
Export-led capacity adds 1.30 points. India’s exports under HS 391290 rose 20.8% in tonnage and 24.5% in value in 2025, while China’s rose about 17.5% to about 59,294 tonnes and USD 206.49 million, UN Comtrade records. Sigachi Industries told investors on 13 August 2026 that it has 18,000 tonnes a year of MCC capacity and has fast-tracked a 12,000-tonne Dahej expansion to reach 30,000 tonnes, its Q1 FY27 presentation shows. Wider Asian supply lets smaller generic makers switch from lactose or starch to MCC, adding about 2,000 tonnes a year of new demand, a Douglas Insights estimate.
Direct compression and co-processed grades: 1.20 points
The shift to direct compression adds 1.20 points. Accent Microcell grew revenue 25.45% to Rs 174.8 crore in the six months to September 2026 and profit 72.21% to Rs 31.1 crore, with a 2,800-tonne first phase at its Kheda unit under commissioning and a 12,000-tonne second phase targeted for the first half of fiscal 2028, its investor presentation of 15 October 2026 shows. Direct compression removes wet granulation, drying and milling, cutting cycle time by about a third, a Douglas Insights estimate, and it typically needs 30% to 50% more MCC per tablet than a granulated formula.
Clean-label food and supplements: 1.00 point
Food and supplement demand adds the last 1.00 point. Plant-based beverages, protein shakes and reduced-fat dairy use 0.2% to 0.6% colloidal MCC to keep particles suspended, and supplement makers prefer a cellulose filler over synthetic binders, a Douglas Insights estimate. Asahi Kasei won the Okochi Memorial Prize on 25 March 2025 for its Ceolus UF grade, which holds nitrite at 0.1 ppm or less across its main grades, its release of 13 May 2025 states, a feature that matters to both drug and food buyers. Summed, 1.40 + 1.30 + 1.20 + 1.00 = 4.90 points, a Douglas Insights estimate.
What holds microcrystalline cellulose back: plant accidents, trade barriers or rival excipients?
Three restraints remove 0.60 points a year from MCC tonnage growth: plant accidents and shutdowns take 0.30 points, trade barriers 0.15 points and rival fillers 0.15 points.
Plant accidents are the heaviest drag because MCC drying and milling create combustible dust. An explosion at Sigachi’s Pashamylaram unit near Hyderabad at about 9:25 a.m. on 30 June 2025 killed 54 workers, including 8 missing, and injured about 36; the plant made about 6,000 tonnes a year of the group’s roughly 14,000 tonnes of output, a government expert committee report dated 4 September 2025 and filed with the National Green Tribunal states. Sigachi booked Rs 118.2 crore of exceptional items and a Rs 82.8 crore net loss for the year to March 2026, its results filing of 31 October 2026 shows. Douglas Insights estimates that stricter dust-explosion audits slow new Indian capacity by 6 to 12 months.
Trade barriers take 0.15 points. A US proclamation signed on 2 April 2026 set a 100% tariff on patented drugs and their ingredients, 15% for the European Union, Japan, Korea and Switzerland and 10% for the United Kingdom, with generics exempt “at this time”, the White House text states. Excipients are not named, but branded tablet production moving to US plants changes which MCC suppliers win qualification, a Douglas Insights estimate. Rival fillers take the last 0.15 points: dicalcium phosphate, lactose, mannitol and pregelatinised starch remain the default filler in many legacy formulas.
Which region uses the most microcrystalline cellulose, and where does demand grow fastest?
Asia Pacific uses the most microcrystalline cellulose, USD 249 million or 38.0% of 2025 value, and grows fastest, 7.0% a year to USD 490 million by 2035, Douglas Insights estimates.
| Region | Value 2025 | Share 2025 | Value 2026 | CAGR 2026-2035 | Value 2035 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Asia Pacific | USD 249 million | 38.0% | USD 267 million | 7.0% | USD 490 million |
| North America | USD 171 million | 26.0% | USD 178 million | 4.6% | USD 267 million |
| Europe | USD 164 million | 25.0% | USD 171 million | 4.2% | USD 248 million |
| Latin America | USD 45.9 million | 7.0% | USD 48.6 million | 5.8% | USD 80.7 million |
| Middle East and Africa | USD 26.2 million | 4.0% | USD 28.0 million | 6.6% | USD 49.7 million |
Asia Pacific leads because India and China press most of the world’s generic tablets and also host most new MCC plants. China’s HS 391290 exports reached about 59,294 tonnes in 2025 and India’s about 49,587 tonnes, UN Comtrade shows, but local use is growing faster than exports as Indian formulators add capacity for regulated markets. Japan adds a premium tier through Asahi Kasei’s Ceolus grades.
North America, USD 171 million, grows 4.6% a year on supplements and on branded tablet production returning to US plants. The United States exported about 48,780 tonnes under HS 391290 in 2024, valued at USD 401.73 million, per UN Comtrade, a far higher value per tonne that reflects specialty cellulose derivatives. Europe, USD 164 million, grows 4.2%; Latin America, USD 45.9 million, grows 5.8% on Brazilian and Mexican generics; and the Middle East and Africa, USD 26.2 million, grows 6.6% on new tablet plants in Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Nigeria. Regional values sum to USD 693 million in 2026, 0.02% above the headline, and USD 1.14 billion in 2035, 0.86% above it.
Which companies lead the microcrystalline cellulose market?
Roquette leads with about 28% of 2025 value through Avicel, bought from IFF, Douglas Insights estimates, ahead of JRS Pharma at about 13% and Asahi Kasei at about 10%; Sigachi, Mingtai, Accent Microcell, DFE Pharma and Blanver follow.
| Company | MCC lines | Latest reported figure | Source date |
|---|---|---|---|
| Roquette | Avicel PH, co-processed grades | 2025 revenue EUR 4.9 billion, up 8% | 19 March 2026 |
| IFF | Sold Pharma Solutions to Roquette | Deal value up to USD 2.85 billion at signing | 19 March 2024 |
| Sigachi Industries | Pharma and food MCC | Q2 FY27 revenue Rs 130.5 crore, up 18.1% | 31 October 2026 |
| Accent Microcell | Pharma MCC and croscarmellose | H1 FY27 revenue Rs 174.8 crore, up 25.45% | 15 October 2026 |
| Asahi Kasei | Ceolus MCC | Okochi Memorial Prize for Ceolus UF | 13 May 2025 |
Roquette completed its acquisition of IFF Pharma Solutions on 1 May 2025, its release states, a business IFF had valued at up to USD 2.85 billion, with about USD 1 billion of 2023 revenue, about 1,100 employees and 10 research and production sites when the deal was signed, per IFF’s release of 19 March 2024. Roquette then reported 2025 revenue of EUR 4.9 billion, up 8%, and current EBITDA of EUR 612 million, citing new product lines from the acquired business, in its results of 19 March 2026.
The Indian tier is recovering and expanding. Sigachi’s consolidated revenue rose to Rs 130.5 crore in the July to September 2026 quarter from Rs 110.5 crore a year earlier, with profit of Rs 8.78 crore, its filing of 31 October 2026 shows. Accent Microcell reported installed MCC capacity of more than 9,200 tonnes a year in its October 2026 presentation. IFF agreed on 29 May 2026 to sell its Food Ingredients business to CVC for about USD 4.3 billion, its release states. The top three hold about 51% of value, a Douglas Insights estimate.
How much does microcrystalline cellulose cost per kilogram, from Indian powder to colloidal grades?
Microcrystalline cellulose sells for an average USD 4.10 a kilogram in 2025, Douglas Insights estimates, from about USD 2.70 for Indian or Chinese standard powder to USD 8.00 or more for colloidal and co-processed grades.
Trade data set the floor. India’s HS 391290 exports averaged about USD 2.77 a kilogram in 2025 (USD 137.18 million over about 49,587 tonnes) and China’s about USD 3.48, per UN Comtrade, while US exports of the wider category averaged about USD 8.24 in 2024. Sigachi earned MCC revenue of Rs 4,093 million in fiscal 2025, its Q4 FY25 presentation shows, which on about 14,000 tonnes of output implies about Rs 290 a kilogram, or about USD 3.40, a Douglas Insights estimate.
Average price rises 1.2% a year in the base case, to about USD 4.62 a kilogram in 2035, because co-processed and low-nitrite grades gain share even as Indian capacity caps standard powder prices. Dissolving pulp, energy for drying and hydrochloric acid are the main cost inputs. One kilogram of silicified MCC is worth about two kilograms of standard powder, a Douglas Insights estimate, so value grows faster than tonnage.
What if Indian capacity floods the market or co-processed grades take off: how large is MCC in 2035?
The microcrystalline cellulose market ends 2035 between USD 857 million and USD 1.39 billion across our three cases, around a base of USD 1.13 billion. Generic tablet volume and the pace of Indian capacity additions set most of the spread.
| Case | Tonnage leg | Price leg | Revenue rate | 2035 value |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Slower | 2.50% | 0.20% | 2.71% | USD 857 million |
| Base case | 4.30% | 1.20% | 5.55% | USD 1.13 billion |
| Faster | 5.70% | 2.00% | 7.81% | USD 1.39 billion |
In the slower case medicine volume grows near the 1.9% per-person rate, generics stay with granulation and Indian expansions push standard powder prices flat, taking 1.8 points off tonnage and 1.0 point off price. In the faster case co-processed grades double their share, colloidal MCC wins more plant-based beverage formulas and price rises 2.0% a year, adding 1.4 points of tonnage and 0.8 points of price. One extra point of yearly revenue growth adds about USD 111 million to 2035 value, a Douglas Insights estimate.
Live signals sit near the base case. Sigachi’s 18.1% quarterly revenue rise, per its filing of 31 October 2026, and Accent Microcell’s 25.45% half-year rise, per its presentation of 15 October 2026, point up; the 54 deaths at Pashamylaram recorded by the expert committee and the April 2026 tariff on branded drugs point to slower qualification. The signal to watch is Sigachi’s Dahej-2 start-up: if 12,000 tonnes come online in 2027, Douglas Insights would cut the price leg by about 0.3 points.
Which rules shape microcrystalline cellulose, from EU E 460(i) purity limits to USP-NF and Schedule M?
Three rule sets shape microcrystalline cellulose most: the EU purity specification for food additive E 460(i), the harmonised pharmacopoeial monograph and India’s revised Schedule M good manufacturing rules.
The food layer sets the purity. Commission Regulation (EU) 2025/666, adopted on 4 April 2025, amended the E 460(i) entry in Regulation (EU) No 231/2012 to cap arsenic, lead, mercury and cadmium at 0.1 mg/kg each, limit loss on drying to 7% and water-soluble matter to 0.24%, with the change applying from 27 October 2025, EUR-Lex shows. Tighter heavy-metal limits favour producers with high-purity dissolving pulp and better washing, a Douglas Insights estimate.
The drug layer sets the paperwork. The MCC monograph is harmonised across the US, European and Japanese pharmacopoeias with USP as coordinator, and its latest revision became official on 1 December 2019, per USP. In India, the revised Schedule M under G.S.R. 922(E) of 28 December 2023 gave firms with turnover above Rs 250 crore 6 months and smaller firms 12 months to comply, a Lok Sabha answer of 29 November 2024 states. Formulators upgrading plants under Schedule M tend to standardise on pharmacopoeial MCC grades with full documentation, a Douglas Insights estimate.
Douglas Exclusive: the Excipient Tonne Map
The Excipient Tonne Map is a Douglas Insights model of 11 inputs: 5 company capacity records, 5 UN Comtrade trade records and 1 IQVIA volume forecast. It compares announced MCC capacity with the tonnage the world will actually need.
| Date | Input | What it moves |
|---|---|---|
| 30 May 2025 | Sigachi: 21,700 tonnes a year before the blast | Pre-accident base |
| 11 February 2026 | IQVIA: medicine volume 2.7% a year | Demand growth |
| 2024 and 2025 | UN Comtrade: India, China and US HS 391290 exports (5 records) | Trade flows and price floor |
| 13 August 2026 | Sigachi: 18,000 tonnes now, 30,000 after Dahej-2 | Indian capacity |
| 15 October 2026 | Accent Microcell: 9,200 tonnes, plus 2,800 and 12,000 tonnes | Indian capacity |
The finding, a Douglas Insights estimate: Sigachi and Accent Microcell together hold about 27,200 tonnes a year today and plan another 26,800 tonnes by fiscal 2028, which would lift the two firms to about 54,000 tonnes, 34% of 2025 world demand. World demand in our base case grows about 7,000 tonnes a year, so these two Indian expansions alone cover almost 4 years of global growth. Unless Chinese and European producers slow their own additions, standard powder faces surplus around 2028, which is why the base case holds standard powder price growth below 1% a year.
The map changes how to read capacity news. Every 10,000 tonnes of new Indian capacity equals about 6% of world demand and about 1.4 years of growth, so a delay of one plant, as after the Pashamylaram explosion, tightens the market more than a strong quarter of tablet demand, a Douglas Insights estimate.
How does the methodology turn 160,000 tonnes into USD 656 million?
How this report is built
- Every figure carries a confidence grade in the fact sheet above, and the working model ships with every licence.
- Five regional models sum to the global figure, with country tables in the Excel model.
- The next scheduled review of this study is May 2027.
- Licence holders receive it as a maintained tab in the Excel model.
Our methodology multiplies about 160,000 tonnes of microcrystalline cellulose used in 2025 by an average USD 4.10 a kilogram to reach USD 656 million, then grows tonnage 4.3% a year and price 1.2% a year.
The model covers 4 grades, 5 applications and 5 regions, using 70 data points, 21 sourced and 49 modelled. Tonnage comes from a supply build: Indian output of about 40,000 tonnes, Chinese output of about 45,000 tonnes and Japanese, European, US and Latin American output of about 75,000 tonnes, Douglas Insights estimates, checked against the HS 391290 export records. Arithmetic: 160,000 tonnes x USD 4,100 a tonne = USD 656 million; USD 656 million x (1.043 x 1.012)^10 = USD 1.13 billion. Tonnage reaches about 167,000 in 2026 and 244,000 in 2035.
Two cross-checks agree. First, India’s export of about 49,587 tonnes in 2025 is close to the combined installed capacity reported by Sigachi and Accent Microcell plus smaller makers, consistent with Indian output of about 40,000 tonnes of MCC within that HS line. Second, Roquette’s acquired pharma business had about USD 1 billion of revenue across many excipients in 2023, per IFF, so an Avicel share near USD 180 million is plausible. AI tools help draft the text and automated checks test the arithmetic and links; the Douglas Insights research desk chooses the sources, builds the model and approves publication, as our editorial standards explain.
