Airports handled a record 9.8 billion passengers in 2025, with international traffic up 6.1%, Airports Council International (ACI) World reported on 23 September 2026, and 77% of airports already use self-service kiosks while 63% use automated bag drop, SITA’s Air Transport IT Insights 2025 shows. The airport kiosk market covers self-service check-in kiosks, self bag drop units, border control and Entry/Exit System (EES) registration kiosks, retail and food ordering kiosks, and information kiosks sold to airports, airlines and border agencies, with their software and installation services. Douglas Insights sizes it at USD 1.85 billion in 2025, about 48,000 units shipped at an average USD 38,500 each, and at USD 3.49 billion in 2035, a 6.58% compound annual growth rate (CAGR). The study sits in our airport and ground support equipment coverage, beside the Interactive Kiosk Market, Passenger Information System Market and Jet Bridge Market reports; every figure follows the Douglas Insights research methodology.

Which airport kiosk type earns the most: check-in kiosks, self bag drop or border kiosks?

Check-in kiosks earn the most, 34.0% of 2025 airport kiosk value or about USD 628 million, Douglas Insights estimates. Self bag drop grows fastest, 8.4% a year to USD 1.24 billion by 2035, and overtakes check-in.

Kiosk type Share 2025 Value 2025 CAGR 2026-2035 Value 2035
Check-in kiosks 34.0% USD 628 million 4.8% USD 1.00 billion
Self bag drop 30.0% USD 554 million 8.4% USD 1.24 billion
Border control and EES kiosks 18.0% USD 333 million 7.4% USD 679 million
Retail and food ordering kiosks 10.0% USD 185 million 7.0% USD 364 million
Information and wayfinding kiosks 8.0% USD 148 million 3.6% USD 211 million

Check-in kiosks lead because common-use self-service (CUSS) machines are now standard in almost every large terminal, and each one serves dozens of airlines. Collins Aerospace said more than 100 airlines are certified on its SelfServ common-use kiosk platform when it launched an enhanced version on 8 April 2025, its release from Passenger Terminal Expo states. Check-in value grows only 4.8% a year to USD 1.00 billion because boarding passes move to phones, a Douglas Insights estimate.

Self bag drop, USD 554 million, grows fastest because a bag drop unit sells for three to five times the price of a check-in kiosk and removes the last staffed step at check-in. Amadeus is installing more than 70 Seamless Bag Drop units at Melbourne Airport, its release of 9 December 2025 states. Border control and EES kiosks, USD 333 million, grow 7.4% to USD 679 million. Retail and food ordering kiosks, USD 185 million, grow 7.0%, and information and wayfinding kiosks, USD 148 million, grow 3.6% to USD 211 million as wayfinding moves to phone apps. Type values for 2035 sum to USD 3.50 billion, 0.17% above the headline.

How is airport kiosk spending split between hardware, software and services?

Hardware takes 58.0% of 2025 airport kiosk value, about USD 1.07 billion, Douglas Insights estimates. Software grows fastest, 8.4% a year to USD 994 million by 2035, as biometric and common-use platforms are licensed per touchpoint.

Component Share 2025 Value 2025 CAGR 2026-2035 Value 2035
Hardware 58.0% USD 1.07 billion 5.6% USD 1.85 billion
Software 24.0% USD 444 million 8.4% USD 994 million
Services 18.0% USD 333 million 6.8% USD 642 million

Hardware leads because every unit needs a touchscreen, passport and boarding pass readers, a bag tag or receipt printer and, for bag drop, a scale, conveyor and camera. Software, USD 444 million, grows fastest because airports now buy common-use platforms as subscriptions; SITA’s Phu Quoc contract covers 150 kiosks, 100 self bag drop units and 204 common-use workstations on its SITA Flex Hybrid platform, its release of 21 April 2026 states. Services, USD 333 million, grow 6.8% to USD 642 million. Component values for 2035 sum to USD 3.48 billion, 0.27% below the headline.

What drives airport kiosk demand: passenger growth, the EU Entry/Exit System or new terminals?

Airport kiosk shipments rise 5.0% a year in our base case, from about 48,000 units in 2025 to about 78,200 in 2035. Four drivers add 6.20 points of gross growth; restraints remove 1.20 points.

Passenger growth: 2.00 points

Traffic is the largest driver, worth 2.00 points. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) forecast 5.2 billion airline passengers in 2026, up 4.4% on 2025, in its outlook of 9 December 2025, then cut the figure to 5.1 billion, up 2.4%, after Middle East disruption and high fuel prices, its revision of 7 June 2026 shows; industry revenue still rises 9.4% to USD 1.165 trillion. ACI counted 9.8 billion airport passengers in 2025, the 23 September 2026 release shows. Douglas Insights estimates each extra 1 million departing passengers needs about 11 more check-in and bag drop units.

EU Entry/Exit System registration: 1.40 points

Europe’s new border system adds 1.40 points. The EES became operational on 12 October 2025 and was rolled out over six months, the European Commission said on 13 October 2025, and it registered more than 45 million border crossings and refused entry to more than 24,000 people across 29 countries before full operation on 10 April 2026, the Commission’s update of 30 March 2026 states. Schiphol opened EES with “a cluster of registration kiosks” at Pier D, its launch page shows. Douglas Insights estimates EES and similar programmes add about 3,500 border kiosk shipments a year through 2027.

New terminals in Asia and the Middle East: 1.60 points

Greenfield airports add 1.60 points. India opened Navi Mumbai International Airport Phase 1, built for about INR 19,650 crore and planned for 90 million passengers a year, on 8 October 2025, the Press Information Bureau (PIB) said, and Cambodia’s Techo International Airport opened with SITA kiosks, bag drops and eGates and 13 million passengers of first-phase capacity, SITA’s release of 25 November 2025 states. Phu Quoc’s new Terminal 2 targets 24 million passengers, scalable to 50 million, and opens in July 2027, the 21 April 2026 release shows.

Rising airport IT budgets and biometrics: 1.20 points

Bigger technology budgets add the last 1.20 points. Airports spent a record USD 14.8 billion on IT in 2025, 7.3% of revenue against 6.4% a year earlier, within USD 50.8 billion of total air transport IT spend, SITA’s research of 15 April 2026 shows. Half of passengers had used biometrics in an airport, up from 46% in 2024, and electronic bag tag use rose from 28% to 35%, IATA’s Global Passenger Survey of 5 November 2025 states. Summed, 2.00 + 1.40 + 1.60 + 1.20 = 6.20 points, a Douglas Insights estimate.

What holds airport kiosk sales back: phone-based digital identity or airline traffic shocks?

Two restraints remove 1.20 points a year from airport kiosk shipment growth: phone-based check-in and digital identity take 0.70 points, and airline traffic and fuel shocks take 0.50 points.

Phones are the heavier drag because a passenger with a mobile boarding pass and a stored digital identity can skip the kiosk entirely. 79% of passengers said they are ready to keep digital identities on their phones, up from 75%, and over 60% would choose digital checkpoints, SITA’s Passenger IT Insights of 6 October 2025 shows, and 64% of airlines plan to use their own digital ID credentials, up from 32%, its 15 April 2026 research states. India’s Digi Yatra face boarding passed more than 110 million journeys at 39 airports with over 26.5 million users, the PIB said on 1 November 2026, and it runs on phones and gates rather than kiosks.

Traffic shocks take 0.50 points. IATA’s cut from 4.4% to 2.4% passenger growth for 2026, set out in its 7 June 2026 revision, shows how quickly airline plans change, and airports delay terminal fit-outs when carriers trim schedules. Douglas Insights estimates a 1-point fall in passenger growth delays about 2,000 kiosk orders by a year.

Which region buys the most airport kiosks, and where does demand grow fastest?

Asia Pacific buys the most airport kiosks, USD 628 million or 34.0% of 2025 value, led by China, India and Southeast Asia. The Middle East and Africa grow fastest, 8.0% a year to USD 439 million by 2035.

Region Value 2025 Share 2025 Value 2026 CAGR 2026-2035 Value 2035
Asia Pacific USD 628 million 34.0% USD 677 million 7.7% USD 1.32 billion
Europe USD 517 million 28.0% USD 548 million 5.9% USD 918 million
North America USD 407 million 22.0% USD 426 million 4.8% USD 650 million
Middle East and Africa USD 203 million 11.0% USD 220 million 8.0% USD 439 million
Latin America USD 92.4 million 5.0% USD 98.3 million 6.4% USD 172 million

Asia Pacific leads on new terminals. Adelaide Airport chose more than 50 Amadeus Seamless Bag Drop units and about 80 Seamless Kiosks, Amadeus’ release of 19 August 2026 states, and Sunshine Coast Airport picked Elenium for 18 self-service kiosks and 10 automatic bag drops going live from 2026, ACI Asia-Pacific reported on 30 October 2025. Taipei Songshan rolled out SITA kiosks and self bag drop with drop times “in as little as 70 seconds”, SITA’s release of 24 June 2025 states. Regional value grows 7.7% a year to USD 1.32 billion.

Europe, USD 517 million, grows 5.9% to USD 918 million on EES kiosks and bag drop retrofits; London City Airport chose Amadeus common-use kiosks and bag drop, its release of 23 October 2026 states. North America, USD 407 million, grows slowest at 4.8% because mobile check-in is most advanced there. The Middle East and Africa, USD 203 million, grow fastest: Hamad International rolled out biometric travel across more than 700 touchpoints, SITA said on 6 July 2026, and flynas opened self bag drop at Riyadh’s King Khalid Terminal 1 on 14 September 2025. Latin America, USD 92.4 million, grows 6.4%. Regional values sum to USD 1.97 billion in 2026 and USD 3.50 billion in 2035, 0.12% above the headline.

Which companies lead the airport kiosk market?

SITA and Amadeus lead airport kiosks with about 24% and 18% of 2025 value, Douglas Insights estimates, ahead of Collins Aerospace at about 12%. The top five, adding IER and Elenium, hold about 63%.

Company Airport kiosk position Latest reported figure Source date

IDEMIA Public Security Biometric border kiosks More than 1 billion travellers a year, 250+ airports Elenium partnership release
IER, Embross, Indra Kiosks, bag drop, border systems No 2025-26 figures disclosed Douglas Insights estimate

Amadeus grew group revenue 6.1% to EUR 6.52 billion in 2025 and Air IT Solutions, which holds its airport business, 6.4% to EUR 2.35 billion, citing “continued strong growth” in Airport IT, its results of 27 February 2026 show. SITA became the largest common-use provider after buying Materna IPS in 2024, a deal that gave it a footprint of about 120 airports, its completion release states.

Biometric specialists are moving into kiosks. IDEMIA Public Security and Elenium signed a global partnership; Elenium says its technology has served more than 1.7 billion passengers for 45 airlines and 35 airports, the partnership release states. Thales, Vanderlande and Siemens Logistics share the remaining 37% with local integrators, a Douglas Insights estimate.

How much does an airport kiosk cost, from a wayfinding screen to a biometric bag drop?

An airport kiosk sells for an average USD 38,500 in 2025 including software licence and installation, Douglas Insights estimates, from about USD 8,000 for a wayfinding screen to USD 150,000 for a biometric self bag drop with conveyor.

The price ladder follows the hardware. Douglas Insights puts information and wayfinding kiosks at USD 8,000 to USD 15,000, food ordering kiosks at USD 10,000 to USD 20,000, common-use check-in kiosks at USD 15,000 to USD 30,000, border and EES kiosks at USD 30,000 to USD 60,000, and self bag drop units at USD 70,000 to USD 150,000. Bag drop is about 12% of units but 30.0% of value, a Douglas Insights estimate.

Average price rises 1.5% a year in the base case, to about USD 44,700 in 2035, as the mix moves toward bag drop and biometric units. Pure kiosk hardware prices fall about 1% a year, but biometric cameras, liveness checks and multi-year software terms more than offset that, a Douglas Insights estimate. Bag handling savings support the premium: mishandled bags fell 23% in 2025 to 24 million, yet mishandling still costs the industry USD 6.3 billion a year, about USD 260 a bag, SITA’s Baggage IT Insights of 29 June 2026 show.

What if phones replace kiosks faster or EES and new terminals over-deliver: how large is the airport kiosk market in 2035?

The airport kiosk market ends 2035 between USD 2.77 billion and USD 4.15 billion across our three cases, around a base of USD 3.49 billion. Phone-based identity and new terminal openings set most of the spread.

Case Shipment leg Price leg Revenue rate 2035 value
Slower 3.60% 0.50% 4.12% USD 2.77 billion
Base case 5.00% 1.50% 6.58% USD 3.49 billion
Faster 6.20% 2.10% 8.43% USD 4.15 billion

In the slower case digital identity removes half of check-in kiosk replacements by 2030 and Gulf and Asian terminals slip, taking 1.4 points off shipments and 1.0 point off price. In the faster case EES-style registration spreads to the United Kingdom and Asia and every new terminal opens with full bag drop, adding 1.2 points of shipments and 0.6 points of price. One extra point of yearly revenue growth adds about USD 342 million to 2035 value, a Douglas Insights estimate.

Live signals sit near the base case. Record airport IT spend, the full EES launch and large Asian contracts point up. IATA’s cut to 2.4% passenger growth and the 79% of travellers ready for phone identity point down. Our 6.58% rate weighs strong bag drop and border growth against flat check-in kiosk volume.

Which rules shape airport kiosks, from the EES Regulation to accessibility law?

Three rule sets shape airport kiosks: the EU Entry/Exit System Regulation, which requires biometric registration of non-EU travellers; accessibility laws in the European Union and United States; and national digital identity schemes such as India’s Digi Yatra.

The border layer matters most in Europe. Regulation (EU) 2017/2226 establishes the EES, which records the fingerprints, facial images and travel documents of non-EU short-stay visitors; the system started on 12 October 2025 and reached all external crossing points on 10 April 2026, the European Commission’s explainer of 13 October 2025 states. Douglas Insights estimates the EES added about 9,000 border kiosks across Schengen airports, land and sea ports between 2024 and 2026.

The accessibility layer sets kiosk design. The European Accessibility Act, Directive (EU) 2019/882, applies from 28 June 2025 to self-service terminals including check-in machines and ticketing machines, and the US rule at 14 CFR 382.57 requires airlines and airports to make a share of automated airport kiosks accessible. India’s Digi Yatra counts more than 100 million journeys at 38 airports and plans 27 more airports, the PIB release of 30 May 2026 states, pulling Indian spend toward e-gates over kiosks.

Douglas Exclusive: the Touchpoint Density Index

The Touchpoint Density Index is a Douglas Insights model built from 12 inputs: 7 vendor and airport releases, 3 industry surveys and 2 government records, listed below. It measures check-in and bag drop units installed per million annual airport passengers.

Date Input What it moves
24 June 2025 SITA: Taipei Songshan kiosks and bag drop Asia retrofit
12 October 2025 European Commission: EES goes live Border kiosks
30 October 2025 Elenium: Sunshine Coast 18 kiosks, 10 bag drops Regional airport density
5 November 2025 IATA: 50% have used biometrics Biometric mix
25 November 2025 SITA: Techo opens with kiosks and bag drop New terminal
9 December 2025 Amadeus: more than 70 bag drops at Melbourne Bag drop share
15 April 2026 SITA: airport IT spend USD 14.8 billion Budget
21 April 2026 SITA: Phu Quoc 150 kiosks, 100 bag drops, 24 million capacity New terminal density
7 June 2026 IATA: 2026 passengers 5.1 billion Traffic
19 August 2026 Amadeus: Adelaide 80 kiosks, 50 bag drops Bag drop share
23 September 2026 ACI World: 9.8 billion passengers in 2025 Traffic base
1 November 2026 PIB: Digi Yatra 110 million journeys Phone substitution

The finding, a Douglas Insights estimate: the world had about 11.2 check-in and bag drop units per million airport passengers in 2025, about 110,000 units against 9.8 billion passengers. Phu Quoc opens at 10.4 units per million of capacity, 250 units for 24 million passengers, close to the global average, but with 40% of units as bag drop against about 20% worldwide. By 2035 the index reaches about 12.5 units per million, with bag drop near 35% of the installed base.

The index changes how to read the market. Kiosk counts per passenger barely move, but the value per touchpoint climbs as bag drop replaces check-in and biometrics are built into each unit. Douglas Insights therefore forecasts shipments from passenger growth and replacement cycles, and price from the bag drop share.

How does the methodology turn 48,000 units into USD 1.85 billion?

How this report is built

  • Every figure carries a confidence grade in the fact sheet above, and the working model ships with every licence.
  • Five regional models sum to the global figure, with country tables in the Excel model.
  • The next scheduled review of this study is May 2027.
  • Licence holders receive it as a maintained tab in the Excel model.

Our methodology multiplies about 48,000 airport kiosks and bag drop units shipped in 2025 by an average USD 38,500 each, including software and installation, to reach USD 1.85 billion, then grows shipments 5.0% and price 1.5% a year.

The model covers 5 kiosk types, 3 components and 5 regions, using 54 data points, 20 sourced and 34 modelled. Shipments come from an installed base of about 240,000 airport kiosks of all types, replaced every 6 to 7 years, plus new terminal openings; prices come from contract disclosures and Douglas Insights price ladders. Arithmetic: 48,000 x USD 38,500 = USD 1.85 billion; USD 1.85 billion x (1.050 x 1.015)^10 = USD 3.49 billion. Shipments reach about 50,400 units in 2026 and 78,200 in 2035.

Two cross-checks agree. First, airport IT spend of USD 14.8 billion in 2025 from SITA’s research puts kiosks at about 12.5% of airport IT budgets, consistent with self-service being one of several large IT lines. Second, the four 2025-26 contracts that disclose unit counts, at Phu Quoc, Melbourne, Adelaide and Sunshine Coast, add up to about 478 kiosks and bag drops, about 1% of our 48,000 yearly shipments, consistent with demand spread across more than 1,000 commercial airports. Currency conversions use a Douglas Insights rate of USD 1.08 per euro. AI tools help draft the text and automated checks test the arithmetic and links; the Douglas Insights research desk chooses the sources, builds the model and approves publication, as our editorial standards explain.
