On 3 May 2025 a 25% US duty on imported automobile parts took effect under Section 232, according to the Federal Register proclamation, and starter motors and transmission parts were on the list. The small electromagnetic valves and actuators that shift gears, time camshafts, purge fuel vapour and pulse brake pressure suddenly had a country-of-origin price. Douglas Insights values the automotive solenoid market at USD 6.73 billion in 2025 and forecasts USD 9.52 billion by 2035, a compound growth rate of 3.53% a year. The receipt is about 2.18 billion solenoids shipped in 2025, to vehicle makers and the aftermarket, at a blended USD 3.08 per unit. Unit volume grows 1.9% a year as vehicle output rises and battery electric cars add thermal and brake valves, and the realised price rises 1.6% a year as the mix shifts to proportional, high-pressure and coolant control solenoids. The study sits within Douglas Insights coverage of automotive components and follows the published Douglas Insights research methodology.

What counts as an automotive solenoid in this study, and what sits outside it?

An automotive solenoid in this study is any electromagnetic coil and plunger that moves a valve, spool or latch in a road vehicle, and Douglas Insights counts USD 6.73 billion of them shipped in 2025. Seven applications make up the market. Transmission and driveline solenoids control shift, line pressure and clutch engagement in automatic, dual-clutch and hybrid gearboxes. Brake and chassis solenoid valves open and close brake circuits in ABS and ESC modulators and adjust damping. Valvetrain and oil control solenoids set camshaft timing and switch variable oil pumps. Fuel and emission control solenoids purge the evaporative canister, vent the tank and switch fuel pressure. EV thermal and battery solenoid valves route coolant and refrigerant between battery, motor and cabin. Starter solenoids engage the starter pinion and close its high-current contact. Body and comfort actuators lock doors, fuel flaps and tailgates.

The automotive solenoid study covers passenger cars, light commercial vehicles and heavy commercial vehicles; internal combustion, hybrid and battery electric propulsion; and two sales channels, OEM fitment and the aftermarket. Fuel injectors are excluded, although many use a solenoid, because they are priced and sourced as injection systems. High-voltage contactors and relays are excluded as well.

What did the 3 May 2025 Section 232 parts duty mean for automotive solenoid sourcing?

The 3 May 2025 duty put a 25% charge on imported automotive solenoid content in starter motors and transmission parts entering the United States, and Douglas Insights estimates it touched about USD 410 million of 2025 solenoid value. The proclamation, signed on 26 March 2025, named engines, transmissions, powertrain parts and electrical components, according to the White House fact sheet. Parts that qualify under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement stayed duty-free while Commerce set up a way to tax their non-US content, so Mexican valve-body and starter plants gained an edge over Asian and European ones. A stand-alone solenoid valve is not on the parts list, but most automotive solenoid units cross the border inside a transmission, valve body or starter. Douglas Insights threads the 3 May 2025 duty through this report: it lifts the North American price leg, it shifts which suppliers win US programmes, and it separates the slower and faster scenarios.

What drives automotive solenoid volumes as powertrains change?

Four drivers lift automotive solenoid unit volume by 1.9% a year, and vehicle output is the base. The International Organization of Motor Vehicle Manufacturers counted 96.4 million vehicles produced in 2025, up 3.9% from 92.7 million in 2024, according to its April 2026 release, with China alone building 34.53 million. Douglas Insights estimates an average of about 21 automotive solenoid units per new vehicle in 2025, so each million extra vehicles adds about 21 million solenoids and USD 65 million of sales. Vehicle output grows about 1.3% a year to 2035 in the base case.

Multi-speed and hybrid transmissions are the second driver. An eight- or ten-speed automatic uses 6 to 9 shift and pressure solenoids, a dual-clutch gearbox 8 to 12, against 3 to 5 in an older four-speed. BorgWarner reports that its hydraulic controls for automatic transmissions feature electro-hydraulic solenoids for standard and high-pressure systems, in a Drivetrain and Morse Systems segment with 2025 sales of USD 5.65 billion, according to its 2025 annual report. Full and plug-in hybrids keep a transmission and add clutch actuation, and Douglas Insights expects hybrid output to double by 2032, holding transmission and driveline solenoids at 1.3% a year growth.

Electric vehicle thermal management is the third driver. A battery electric car has no camshaft, fuel tank vapour or starter, but it needs 6 to 14 coolant and refrigerant valves to heat and cool the battery, motor and cabin, most of them solenoid or stepper operated. The International Energy Agency reports that electric car sales grew 20% to more than 20 million in 2025, one in four new cars sold, according to its Global EV Outlook 2026. Douglas Insights counts about 142 million EV thermal and battery solenoid valves in 2025, growing 10.4% a year.

Brake and chassis electronics are the fourth driver. Every ABS and ESC modulator carries 8 to 12 solenoid valves, and new safety rules in India, Latin America and Southeast Asia are putting ESC on vehicles that had none. Douglas Insights estimates brake and chassis solenoid valves grow 4.2% a year, the second-fastest application, as integrated brake systems spread.

What holds back automotive solenoid growth as engines fade?

Three restraints trim about 1.2 points a year from automotive solenoid growth, and the loss of engine content is the largest. A battery electric car carries about 22 solenoids against about 27 in a petrol car with an automatic gearbox, because it drops cam phasers, oil pumps, purge valves, the starter and the multi-speed transmission. Douglas Insights estimates that each 1 point rise in battery electric share of production removes about 5 million automotive solenoid units a year, which is why valvetrain and oil control solenoids shrink 0.8% a year.

Price pressure from vehicle makers is the second restraint. Annual price-down clauses of 1% to 3% are standard in supply contracts, and a starter or purge solenoid is a commodity that Chinese suppliers can make for 20% to 30% less than Japanese or European rivals. Douglas Insights holds starter solenoids to 0.5% a year growth on that pressure.

Trade friction is the third restraint. The 3 May 2025 duty, retaliatory measures and the European Union’s own review of Chinese automotive imports raise the cost of moving solenoids across borders. Douglas Insights removes about 0.3 points a year from volume growth for delayed or re-sourced programmes.

Which automotive solenoid application carries the value?

Transmission and driveline solenoids carry the most automotive solenoid value at 27.6% of 2025 sales, USD 1.86 billion, while EV thermal and battery solenoid valves grow fastest at 12.0% a year.

Automotive solenoid application 2025 value Share 2035 value CAGR 2026-2035
Transmission and driveline solenoids USD 1.86 billion 27.6% USD 2.11 billion 1.3%
Brake and chassis solenoid valves USD 1.10 billion 16.4% USD 1.66 billion 4.2%
Valvetrain and oil control solenoids USD 955 million 14.2% USD 881 million -0.8%
Fuel and emission control solenoids USD 827 million 12.3% USD 998 million 1.9%
EV thermal and battery solenoid valves USD 780 million 11.6% USD 2.42 billion 12.0%
Starter solenoids USD 612 million 9.1% USD 643 million 0.5%
Body and comfort actuators USD 592 million 8.8% USD 795 million 3.0%

Transmission and driveline solenoids are worth USD 1.86 billion in 2025. Precision proportional valves that hold line pressure to fine tolerances sell for USD 8 to USD 25 each, far above the market average.

Brake and chassis solenoid valves are worth USD 1.10 billion in 2025. Each ABS and ESC unit needs a full set, and safety mandates keep adding vehicles to the fitted base.

Valvetrain and oil control solenoids are worth USD 955 million in 2025. Variable cam timing is standard on almost every modern petrol engine, but engine volumes peak before 2030.

Fuel and emission control solenoids are worth USD 827 million in 2025. Purge and vent valves are required to meet evaporative emission limits, and hybrids need sealed tank systems with extra valves.

EV thermal and battery solenoid valves are worth USD 780 million in 2025 and grow fastest at 12.0% a year to USD 2.42 billion, because every battery electric car and plug-in hybrid needs several coolant and refrigerant valves to keep the battery within its working temperature.

Starter solenoids are worth USD 612 million in 2025. Stop-start systems use heavier-duty starters, but battery electric cars need none at all.

Body and comfort actuators are worth USD 592 million in 2025. Door locks, fuel and charge-port flaps and tailgate latches keep this group growing with vehicle output.

How do vehicle types, propulsion and channels split automotive solenoid spending?

By vehicle type, Douglas Insights estimates passenger cars take 71.8% of automotive solenoid value, light commercial vehicles 17.5% and heavy commercial vehicles 10.7%, where air-brake and transmission valves carry high unit prices. By propulsion, internal combustion vehicles take 74% in 2025, hybrid vehicles 14% and battery electric vehicles 12%. By channel, OEM fitment takes about 86% and the aftermarket 14%, led by starter, purge and transmission solenoid replacement in vehicles more than eight years old.

Which region fits the most automotive solenoid units?

Asia Pacific fits the most automotive solenoid units at 49.0% of 2025 value, USD 3.30 billion, and it is also the fastest region at 4.2% a year. China builds more than a third of the world’s vehicles and most of its electric cars, Japan is home to Denso, Aisin and Mitsubishi Electric, and India’s output is rising as ESC and automatic gearboxes spread. Asia Pacific reaches USD 4.97 billion by 2035.

Europe spends USD 1.48 billion in 2025 and grows 2.47% a year to USD 1.89 billion. European car makers use more dual-clutch and hybrid gearboxes than any other region, but battery electric growth and flat vehicle output hold back engine solenoid sales.

North America spends USD 1.35 billion in 2025 and grows 2.9% a year to USD 1.79 billion. Pickups and SUVs with ten-speed automatics carry high solenoid content, and the 3 May 2025 duty pushes suppliers to build valve bodies in Mexico and the United States. Latin America spends USD 336 million and grows 3.4% a year, led by Brazil and Mexico. The Middle East and Africa is the wildcard at USD 269 million in 2025 and 3.9% a year, as Morocco, South Africa, Turkey’s export plants and new Saudi assembly lines add output.

Which companies make automotive solenoid actuators and valves?

Douglas Insights estimates the five largest automotive solenoid suppliers hold about 40% of 2025 sales, led by Robert Bosch at about 11%.

Supplier Automotive solenoid strength Est. 2025 share
Robert Bosch ABS and ESC valve blocks, integrated brake systems, fuel and purge valves 11%
Denso Transmission, VVT, purge and starter solenoids, strong with Japanese makers 9%
BorgWarner Transmission hydraulic controls and variable cam timing solenoids 8%
Aisin Automatic transmission valve bodies and solenoids, EV thermal valves 7%
Mitsubishi Electric Starter motors and solenoids, engine control actuators 5%
Hitachi Astemo, ZF, Schaeffler, Continental, Eagle Industry, Johnson Electric, Sanhua and others Brake valves, transmission controls, thermal valves and body actuators 60%

Advantage in the automotive solenoid business rests on magnetics and precision machining at very high volume, and on being designed in years before a vehicle launches. Bosch leads because a single ESC unit carries a dozen valves and Bosch supplies more ESC units than anyone. Denso, Aisin and BorgWarner win through their transmission and engine programmes, since a solenoid is usually sold as part of a valve body or cam phaser. Chinese suppliers such as Sanhua lead in EV thermal valves, where the automotive solenoid is part of a refrigerant module rather than an engine part.

What price does an automotive solenoid command per unit?

An automotive solenoid sold at a blended USD 3.08 per unit in 2025, and Douglas Insights expects about USD 3.61 by 2035. A door-lock or flap actuator sells for USD 0.80 to USD 2, a purge or vent valve for USD 2 to USD 5, and a VVT oil control solenoid for USD 3 to USD 7. Starter solenoids sell for USD 3 to USD 6 inside the starter assembly. High-pressure proportional transmission solenoids sell for USD 8 to USD 25, and an EV refrigerant or coolant valve for USD 5 to USD 18. The realised price rises 1.6% a year because the mix shifts toward proportional, brake and EV thermal valves, even though annual price-downs cut the price of each part number by 1% to 3% a year.

How do battery electric cars rewrite the automotive solenoid count per vehicle?

Battery electric cars cut the automotive solenoid count from about 27 to about 22 per vehicle, and Douglas Insights estimates they still carry slightly more solenoid value, about USD 88 against USD 82 for a petrol car with an automatic gearbox. A petrol car with an eight-speed automatic carries 6 to 9 transmission solenoids, 2 to 4 cam timing and oil control solenoids, 2 purge and vent valves, a starter solenoid and 8 to 12 ABS valves. A battery electric car keeps the brake valves and body actuators, drops the rest, and adds 6 to 14 coolant and refrigerant valves, many of them high-value proportional or expansion valves. Hybrids carry the most of all, about 33, because they keep the engine and add thermal valves. Across the whole 2025 fleet Douglas Insights counts an average of about 21 automotive solenoid units per vehicle, below the petrol automatic figure, because manual gearboxes, still common in India, Latin America and Africa, carry only 2 or 3 clutch and shift solenoids, and many entry cars have simpler brake systems.

How large could automotive solenoid sales grow by 2035?

The base scenario takes automotive solenoid sales to USD 9.52 billion by 2035, with a range of USD 7.43 billion to USD 11.7 billion. The base case combines 1.9% unit growth with a 1.6% annual rise in realised price for 3.53% a year. The slower scenario assumes flat vehicle output, fast battery electric growth without hybrids and wider duties after the 3 May 2025 measure, setting the legs at 0.4% and 0.6% for USD 7.43 billion. The faster scenario assumes strong hybrid growth, faster ESC fitment in emerging markets and richer EV thermal systems, setting the legs at 3.1% and 2.5% for USD 11.7 billion. Each 1-point change in unit growth moves the 2035 figure by about USD 976 million. Published estimates for automotive solenoid sales range from about 2.8% to 5.6% a year, and the Douglas Insights figure sits inside that range.

Which emission and safety laws govern automotive solenoid design?

Emission and safety law decides how many automotive solenoid units a vehicle needs, and the European Union’s Euro 7 regulation sets the next step, applying to new car and van types from 29 November 2026. Regulation (EU) 2024/1257, published on EUR-Lex, tightens limits on evaporative emissions from the fuel system, which keeps purge and vent valves on every petrol and hybrid vehicle and adds sealed tank systems to plug-in hybrids. In the United States, the Environmental Protection Agency and the California Air Resources Board set evaporative emission and on-board diagnostic rules that require purge valves to be monitored for leaks. ESC is mandatory on new cars in the United States, the European Union, Japan and a growing list of emerging markets, and each mandate adds 8 to 12 brake solenoid valves per vehicle.

Douglas Exclusive: the automotive solenoid content-per-vehicle map

The content-per-vehicle map counts automotive solenoid units and value on about 180 current vehicle platforms from the 20 largest vehicle makers, split by transmission type, propulsion and brake system, so suppliers can see how content changes as a model moves from petrol to hybrid or battery electric. Related coverage sits in the Automotive Integrated Drive Train Module Market, Electric Vehicle Battery Thermal Management System Market and Advanced Suspension Control System Market reports.
