Apple says the hinge inside its first folding iPhone is engineered from more than 100 components, and that count explains much of the price of a phone whose screen must bend thousands of times a year without cracking. Foldable smartphones are handsets whose main display folds on one or two hinges, and the foldable smartphone market covers book-type, flip-type and tri-fold models sold new to consumers and businesses worldwide. Douglas Insights counts 20.6 million foldable shipments in 2025 × USD 1,240 average realised price = USD 25.54 billion, rising to USD 74.77 billion by 2035, a revenue compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 11.34% over 2026 to 2035. Apple unveiled iPhone Duo on 9 September 2026 at USD 1,999 for 256GB, with general availability set for 23 October 2026. The figures sit inside our information technology and semiconductors coverage and follow the Douglas Insights research methodology.

Why are Apple’s iPhone Duo and slimmer hinges accelerating foldable smartphone demand?

Foldable smartphone units grow 10.4% a year in the Douglas Insights base case, from 20.6 million in 2025 to 55.4 million in 2035. Four forces build that volume leg: Apple’s entry, thinner book-type designs, cheaper flips and proven tri-fold durability, worth 3.6, 2.9, 2.1 and 1.8 points.

Apple enters the foldable iPhone category: 3.6 points

Apple’s iPhone Duo pairs a 7.6-inch inner display with a 5.4-inch outer screen, uses a Grade 5 titanium frame and starts at USD 1,999. Its inner panel uses polymer layers that slide past one another like pages in a book to relieve bend stress. Shipment trackers expect foldable units to rise about 30% in 2026 and credit Apple with more than 22% of foldable units in its first year. Douglas Insights assigns 3.6 percentage points of the 10.4-point volume leg to Apple, because iPhone owners who wanted a folding screen had no option inside iOS before this launch.

Thinner book-type designs: 2.9 points

Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra measures 4.1 mm unfolded and weighs 215 g, and the Galaxy Z Fold8 weighs 201 g, the lightest Galaxy Z Fold yet; both went on general sale on 7 August 2026 at USD 2,099.99 and USD 1,899.99. Thinness sells. It removes the old penalty of carrying two phones’ worth of glass. Huawei, Honor, vivo and OPPO compete on the same metric in China, where book-type models took about 69% of global foldable shipments in the first half of 2026 on tracker counts. We credit slimmer book-type foldables with 2.9 points of annual unit growth.

Cheaper flip phones: 2.1 points

Motorola’s three new razr flips went on sale on 21 May 2026 at USD 799.99, USD 1,099.99 and USD 1,499.99, and the entry razr meets military standards for durability. A flip phone at USD 799.99 sits close to a mainstream slab flagship, which turns the flip-type foldable into a replacement purchase rather than a second gadget. Douglas Insights puts the flip contribution at 2.1 points, below the format’s 39.3% weight in 2025 units, because flip shipments fell sharply in the first half of 2026.

Tri-fold engineering and durability proof: 1.8 points

Samsung’s Galaxy Z TriFold, a 10-inch device 3.9 mm thick at its thinnest point, reached US stores on 30 January 2026 at USD 2,899 after a 200,000-cycle multi-folding test, equal to about 100 folds a day for five years. Google rates its Pixel 10 Pro Fold at IP68 with a gearless hinge built for more than 10 years of folding. Durability proof converts doubtful buyers; we assign it 1.8 points, so 3.6 + 2.9 + 2.1 + 1.8 = 10.4 points. Price adds 0.85% a year on top, and the two legs combine into the 11.34% revenue CAGR.

Which crease, repair-cost and flip-churn hurdles slow foldable phone adoption?

Three hurdles remove 4.8 percentage points from foldable smartphone unit growth in the Douglas Insights slower case: the price premium, inner-screen repair cost and weak flip replacement. Together they turn the 10.4% base volume leg into 5.6% a year, leaving 35.5 million units in 2035 instead of 55.4 million.

Price comes first. Our USD 1,240 average realised foldable price is roughly three times a typical smartphone, and foldables were still only about 2.5% of all smartphone shipments in the third quarter of 2025. While USD 1,999 remains the entry ticket for a flagship book-type, mid-range buyers wait; we remove 1.9 points for it.

Repair cost follows. A folding inner display carries a protective foil that EU rules treat as a spare part for 7 years, and replacing a cracked folding panel is a large share of the USD 1,240 average handset price. We take 1.6 points off foldable units for buyers who fear that bill, or the visible crease that remains on many models.

Flips are the weak spot. Tracker data show flip-type shipments down 47% year on year in the first half of 2026, while book-type volumes held up. We remove 1.3 points, giving 1.9 + 1.6 + 1.3 = 4.8 points in total.

Which foldable form factor makes the money: book-type, flip-type or tri-fold?

Book-type foldables make the money, earning USD 18.54 billion or 72.6% of 2025 foldable smartphone value on 12.2 million units. Tri-fold models grow fastest, at 26.9% a year from USD 817.4 million to USD 8.85 billion in 2035, as Samsung adds a second hinge to its range.

Form factor Share 2025 Value 2025 CAGR 2026-2035 Value 2035
Book-type 72.6% USD 18.54 billion 10.62% USD 50.88 billion
Flip-type 24.2% USD 6.18 billion 9.31% USD 15.06 billion
Tri-fold 3.2% USD 817.4 million 26.90% USD 8.85 billion

Book-type foldables hold 72.6%, worth USD 18.54 billion, and grow 10.62% a year to USD 50.88 billion; a tablet-sized inner screen justifies an average realised price of about USD 1,520. Flip-type foldables take 24.2%, or USD 6.18 billion, on 8.1 million units at about USD 763 each, and rise 9.31% a year to USD 15.06 billion. Their value share trails their unit share because flips sell near slab-phone prices.

Tri-fold phones carry 3.2%, about USD 817.4 million on roughly 0.3 million units. Their value climbs 26.9% a year, the fastest of any foldable form factor, because a 10-inch screen that folds to pocket size has no slab-phone substitute and sells near USD 2,725.

How does foldable phone value split across price tiers, from under USD 1,000 to USD 1,800 and above?

Foldables in the USD 1,000 to 1,799 tier earn the largest slice, 41.5% of 2025 value or USD 10.60 billion, by Douglas Insights estimate. Phones at USD 1,800 and above take 36.7%, or USD 9.37 billion, because flagship book-type and tri-fold foldables now launch there.

Under USD 1,000 foldables hold 21.8%, worth USD 5.57 billion, and almost all of them are flips such as the USD 799.99 razr. The middle tier carries discounted book-types and premium flips like the USD 1,199.99 Galaxy Z Flip8. The top tier gains share fastest on our model, since the iPhone Duo enters at USD 1,999 and the TriFold at USD 2,899.

Where are foldable smartphones bought, and which region adds the most hinged handsets?

Asia Pacific buys the most foldable smartphones, USD 12.44 billion or 48.7% of 2025 value, led by China’s book-type brands. North America grows fastest, at 13.42% a year, because the iPhone Duo gives the region’s large iOS base its first folding option from a familiar brand.

Asia Pacific rises 10.68% a year to USD 34.32 billion in 2035, with Huawei, Honor, vivo, OPPO and Xiaomi all selling book-type foldables at home. North America holds USD 5.72 billion, or 22.4%, and reaches USD 20.16 billion; carrier trade-in deals carry most of its sales. Europe takes USD 4.57 billion, or 17.9%, growing 10.09% a year to USD 11.96 billion, the slowest rate, as long repair periods stretch ownership.

Latin America is worth USD 1.35 billion, or 5.3%, and grows 10.81% a year to USD 3.78 billion. The Middle East and Africa is the wildcard: USD 1.46 billion, or 5.7%, rising 12.1% a year to USD 4.56 billion because Gulf buyers pay flagship prices for book-type foldables.

Who wins foldable smartphone share: Samsung’s Galaxy Z line, Huawei’s Mate X range or newcomer Apple?

Samsung leads foldable smartphone value with an estimated 41.3% of 2025 revenue, about USD 10.55 billion, and the top three brands hold 78.3%. Douglas Insights anchors the Samsung estimate on tracker data giving it 64% of foldable units in the third quarter of 2025, a seasonal peak.

Brand Estimated share of 2025 value Estimated value 2025 What the position rests on
Samsung 41.3% USD 10.55 billion Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, Fold8, Flip8 and the Z TriFold
Huawei 29.6% USD 7.56 billion Mate X book-types sold mainly in China
Motorola (Lenovo) 7.4% USD 1.89 billion razr flips from USD 799.99
Honor 6.1% USD 1.56 billion Magic V5, 8.8 mm folded
vivo 3.6% USD 919.6 million China book-type demand
Google 3.3% USD 843.0 million IP68 Pixel 10 Pro Fold
OPPO 2.9% USD 740.8 million Find N book-types
Xiaomi 2.4% USD 613.1 million Mix Fold and Mix Flip models
Others 3.4% USD 868.5 million Regional brands and refurbished channels

Samsung still sets the pace. It sells the widest foldable range, from the USD 1,199.99 Galaxy Z Flip8 to the USD 2,899 Galaxy Z TriFold, across 106 markets. Huawei holds an estimated 29.6%, about USD 7.56 billion. Its Mate X7 pairs an 8-inch main screen with a 6.49-inch cover screen, a 5,600 mAh battery and IP58 and IP59 ratings, and trackers put Huawei at 57% of book-type foldable shipments in the first half of 2026.

Motorola, owned by Lenovo, holds 7.4%, or USD 1.89 billion, built almost entirely on razr flips. Honor holds 6.1%, or USD 1.56 billion; its Magic V5, 8.8 mm thick folded and 217 g, launched in Western Europe on 28 August 2025 at EUR 1,999 and GBP 1,699.99.

vivo takes 3.6%, Google 3.3% with the IP68 Pixel 10 Pro Fold, OPPO 2.9% and Xiaomi 2.4%. Apple has no 2025 foldable revenue because iPhone Duo ships late in 2026. Douglas Insights expects Apple to reach about 18.4% of foldable value in 2027, its first full year, mostly at the expense of Samsung in North America.

How do hinge and Ultra Thin Glass choices change foldable smartphone durability and weight?

Samsung made the Ultra Thin Glass in its Galaxy Z Fold7 50% thicker than in the Fold6, yet cut total display thickness by more than 39%. Foldable makers now trade glass for crease resistance. Hinges carry most of the remaining weight budget.

The third-generation Armor FlexHinge in the Galaxy Z Fold7 is 27% thinner and 43% lighter than its predecessor, and a titanium-based lattice replaced carbon fibre behind the panel. The Fold7 folds to 8.9 mm and opens to 4.2 mm, 48% thinner than the first Galaxy Fold. Google took the opposite route with a gearless hinge, and Huawei backs its Mate X7 hinge with ultra-high strength steel. Each foldable design choice moves weight: the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra carries an 8-inch main display at 215 g, while the Galaxy Z Flip8 weighs 180 g.

How much do buyers pay for a book-type foldable versus a flip phone?

A foldable smartphone sells for USD 1,240 on average in 2025 by Douglas Insights estimate, measured at realised sell-through after promotions, rising 0.85% a year to about USD 1,350 in 2035. Realised bands run from about USD 650 for an older flip to about USD 2,900 for a tri-fold.

Foldable type Estimated realised price band 2025 Average realised price 2025
Flip-type USD 650 to 1,250 USD 763
Book-type USD 1,250 to 2,100 USD 1,520
Tri-fold USD 2,500 to 2,900 USD 2,725

List prices mislead. A USD 1,899.99 Galaxy Z Fold8 often trades lower within weeks through carrier promotions, which is why our book-type average of USD 1,520 equals 76.0% of the mean book-type list price in our ledger. Flips realise only 66.4% of list, as older razr and Flip models stay on shelves at cut prices.

Price growth of 0.85% a year is pure mix. Apple’s USD 1,999 entry and tri-folds lift the top, while flip prices drift toward USD 700.

Which carrier trade-in, brand-store and e-commerce channels sell the most foldable handsets?

Carrier stores sell 43.9% of foldable smartphone value, about USD 11.21 billion in 2025, because trade-in credits and instalment plans shrink a USD 1,899.99 sticker into a monthly bill. Retail and e-commerce take 36.5%, or USD 9.32 billion.

Brand online stores hold 19.6%, worth USD 5.01 billion, and matter more for foldables than for slab phones: Samsung, Apple and Honor use them for pre-order bundles and storage upgrades. Retail and e-commerce lead in China, where marketplace launches carry most Huawei and Honor foldable volume.

Which EU ecodesign rules on foldable display foil and drop tests must phone makers comply with?

One rule set shapes foldable smartphone design most: Commission Regulation (EU) 2023/1670, applying since 20 June 2025, which reaches an estimated USD 4.57 billion of 2025 foldable value in Europe. It sets drop tests, spare-part duties and software update periods, with clauses written for foldable displays.

For a foldable designed with a protective foil on its inner display, the regulation replaces the standard 45 drop-test falls with 35 falls folded and 15 falls unfolded. Such phones are exempt from the scratch-resistance test, but must state that the device did not undergo one. The foil itself is a listed spare part for professional repairers and users for 7 years, and security updates run for 5 years after a model leaves the market.

The Commission must also assess by September 2027 whether to add reliability requirements for foldable devices. Douglas Insights treats that review as the main regulatory risk to hinge costs, since a mandated fold-cycle test would favour brands that already publish 200,000-cycle results.

What if iPhone Duo pulls flip buyers into book-type foldables: which 2035 forecast cases follow?

The 2035 value of foldable smartphones lands between USD 44.94 billion and USD 110.87 billion across our three cases, with USD 74.77 billion in the base. Apple uptake and flip replacement set the volume leg; tri-fold and book-type mix set the price leg.

Case Volume CAGR Price CAGR 2035 value
Slower 5.60% 0.20% USD 44.94 billion
Base case 10.40% 0.85% USD 74.77 billion
Faster 14.10% 1.50% USD 110.87 billion

The slower case keeps all three hurdles in force and holds price growth to 0.2% a year. The faster case is a Douglas Insights estimate in which the iPhone Duo reaches more than 22% of foldable units in its first year, flip shipments recover by 2028 and tri-folds pass 2 million units a year before 2032.

Unit growth carries an uneven weight: adding one point to annual foldable unit growth lifts the 2035 base by USD 7.06 billion, while removing one point cuts USD 6.50 billion. Outside forecasts we read run from 17.0% to 21.9% a year. Douglas Insights sits well below that range at 11.34%, because we value foldables at realised sell-through prices on a 20.6 million unit base and expect near-flat prices.

Douglas Exclusive: the Foldable Launch Price Ledger

The Foldable Launch Price Ledger is a Douglas Insights model built from 9 launch-price inputs taken from 5 company releases read for this study, from Samsung (two), Apple, Motorola and Honor. It records each foldable smartphone’s list price and form factor, then sets the list against our realised price.

Model Brand Form factor US launch list price
Galaxy Z TriFold Samsung Tri-fold USD 2,899.00
Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra Samsung Book-type USD 2,099.99
iPhone Duo (256GB) Apple Book-type USD 1,999.00
Galaxy Z Fold8 Samsung Book-type USD 1,899.99
razr ultra Motorola Flip-type USD 1,499.99
Galaxy Z Flip8 Samsung Flip-type USD 1,199.99
razr+ Motorola Flip-type USD 1,099.99
razr Motorola Flip-type USD 799.99
Magic V5 Honor Book-type EUR 1,999 (no US price)

The eight US-dollar list prices average USD 1,687, with a median of USD 1,700. Our USD 1,240 realised market average equals 73.5% of that ledger mean. Book-type list prices average USD 2,000 and flips USD 1,150.

The finding: flips lose far more between list and till than book-types do, realising 66.4% of list against 76.0% on our estimates. Discounting hurts flips most: Douglas Insights calculates the gap at about USD 387 per flip handset. That gap is why flip value lags flip units, and why a cheaper flip lifts volume more than revenue. The ledger is our own compilation of public price notices, not an official register.

Methodology check: how do 20.6 million hinged handsets add up to USD 25.54 billion?

How this report is built

  • Every figure carries a confidence grade in the fact sheet above, and the working model ships with every licence.
  • Five regional models sum to the global figure, with country tables in the Excel model.
  • The next scheduled review of this study is April 2027.
  • Licence holders receive it as a maintained tab in the Excel model.

Douglas Insights multiplies 20.6 million foldable smartphones shipped in 2025 by a USD 1,240 average realised price to reach USD 25.54 billion. The Asia Pacific, North America, Europe, Latin America and Middle East and Africa rows sum to the global foldable figure exactly, and three cross-checks agree within 12.2%.

Inputs: 12.2 million book-type, 8.1 million flip-type and 0.3 million tri-fold units; 2 tracker counts of 2025 shipments; 9 launch prices; 1 EU regulation; 4 published growth rates; and 9 company pages. Units grow 10.4% and price 0.85%, so (1.104 × 1.0085) minus 1 = 11.34%. For 2026 the model gives 22.74 million units at USD 1,250.54, or USD 28.44 billion.

Cross-check one: the lower tracker count of 18.2 million units sits 11.7% below our 20.6 million. Cross-check two: the lowest outside 2025 value we read, USD 28.7 billion, sits 12.2% above ours, a gap explained by list-price rather than realised-price valuation. Cross-check three: segment 2035 values sum to USD 74.79 billion, within 0.02% of the total. Readers can pair this foldable build with our Mobile Phone Camera Module Market, Mobile Semiconductors Market and Smart Wearable Market reports.
