Commission Regulation (EU) 2023/2055, which entered into force on 17 October 2023, puts intentionally added synthetic polymer microparticles in detergents on a fixed transitional clock, so every laundry and cleaning formula sold in Europe must be rebuilt around chemistry that dissolves or biodegrades. Home care chemicals are the surfactants, builders, enzymes, polymers, solvents, fragrance ingredients, bleaches and biocides that formulators blend into detergents, dishwashing products, surface cleaners, toilet cleaners and air fresheners for households. The Home Care Chemicals market covers those ingredients at the point of sale to formulators, measured in tonnes of active and carrier material. Douglas Insights puts the Home Care Chemicals market at USD 22.75 billion in 2025 and USD 33.14 billion in 2035, a 3.83% revenue CAGR. The arithmetic: 14.06 million tonnes times an average realised USD 1,618 per tonne equals USD 22.75 billion. The study belongs to our specialty chemicals coverage and follows the Douglas Insights research methodology.
Which surfactant and enzyme suppliers win home care chemicals tonnage, and which brand owners buy it?
Douglas Insights estimates Stepan, the largest listed surfactant specialist, held a 4.0% share of 2025 home care chemicals revenue, so supply is fragmented. Buying power sits with detergent brand owners such as P&G, Unilever, Henkel and Clorox, whose flat volumes set the tonnage that ingredient suppliers can sell.
Stepan is the clearest disclosed surfactant pure play. Its full year 2025 results, released on 23 February 2026, show Surfactants net sales of USD 1.67 billion, up 9%, while surfactant volume fell 1% and segment operating income dropped 21% to USD 67.4 million. Management blamed lower demand in commodity laundry and cleaning end markets, partly offset by double digit growth in industrial cleaning, and named start-up costs at its Pasadena, Texas site. Douglas Insights assigns 55% of Stepan surfactant sales to household cleaning, about USD 916.3 million.
Novonesis is the enzyme counterweight. The 12M 2025 highlights dated 25 February 2026 put Household Care sales at EUR 801.2 million, 19.3% of group sales of EUR 4.16 billion, with 7% organic growth. Converted at a Douglas Insights planning rate of USD 1.10 per euro, that is about USD 881.3 million, or 3.9% of home care chemicals revenue.
On the buying side, P&G reported Fabric and Home Care net sales of USD 29.6 billion for fiscal 2025 on 29 July 2025, 35.2% of its USD 84.3 billion total, with organic sales up 1% and volume unchanged. Henkel Consumer Brands sold EUR 9.68 billion with 0.3% organic growth, and Clorox net sales were USD 7.10 billion, flat on the year. A brand owner that holds volume flat buys flat surfactant tonnes; that is the single fact which explains Stepan’s 1% volume dip.
| Company | Role in home care chemicals | Disclosed basis | Douglas Insights 2025 share estimate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stepan | Anionic and nonionic surfactants | Surfactants net sales USD 1.67 billion | 4.0% |
| Novonesis | Detergent enzymes | Household Care EUR 801.2 million | 3.9% |
| P&G | Largest buyer | Fabric and Home Care USD 29.6 billion | Buyer |
| Unilever | Buyer (Persil, Cif, Domestos) | Home Care 23% of group turnover | Buyer |
| Henkel | Buyer (Consumer Brands) | EUR 9.68 billion sales | Buyer |
| Clorox | Buyer (bleach, disinfecting cleaners) | Net sales USD 7.10 billion | Buyer |
Shares in the table are Douglas Insights estimates, anchored on disclosed segment sales. Integrated chemical majors, regional sulfonators and Chinese surfactant makers share the remaining 92.1% of home care chemicals revenue. Readers tracking the base molecules should see our Surfactant Market.
Which ingredient type leads home care chemicals revenue, surfactants or enzymes?
Surfactants lead with 44.3% of 2025 home care chemicals revenue, or USD 10.1 billion, because every laundry liquid, powder and dish soap relies on them to lift soil. Enzymes are the fastest-growing type at 6.48% a year, replacing surfactant load at lower wash temperatures.
| Ingredient segment | Share 2025 | Value 2025 (USD million) | CAGR 2026-2035 | Value 2035 (USD million) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Surfactants | 44.3% | 10,077.9 | 3.62% | 14,381.6 |
| Builders and chelating agents | 15.8% | 3,594.4 | 2.71% | 4,696.3 |
| Enzymes | 9.6% | 2,183.9 | 6.48% | 4,091.8 |
| Polymers and rheology modifiers | 8.7% | 1,979.2 | 4.32% | 3,021.1 |
| Solvents | 7.4% | 1,683.4 | 2.86% | 2,231.8 |
| Bleaching agents and biocides | 7.3% | 1,660.7 | 3.05% | 2,242.7 |
| Fragrance ingredients | 6.9% | 1,569.7 | 4.17% | 2,361.8 |
Surfactants, worth USD 10.1 billion, grow 3.62% a year to USD 14.4 billion; anionic sulfonates and ethoxylated nonionics remain the cheapest way to emulsify grease. Builders and chelating agents hold 15.8%, or USD 3.59 billion, and grow only 2.71% because phosphate-free powders shed carbonate and zeolite tonnes as liquids gain. Enzymes carry 9.6%, or USD 2.18 billion, and almost double to USD 4.09 billion as protease, amylase and lipase blends let brands cut surfactant per wash. Polymers and rheology modifiers take 8.7%, or USD 1.98 billion, rising 4.32% on anti-redeposition and thickening duty in concentrated liquids.
Solvents hold 7.4%, or USD 1.68 billion, the slowest at 2.86% as unit doses use less carrier. Bleaching agents and biocides take 7.3%, or USD 1.66 billion, grown 3.05% on hygiene cleaners. Fragrance ingredients account for 6.9%, or USD 1.57 billion, growing 4.17% because scent is the cue shoppers notice. Enzymes are the fastest home care chemicals segment at 6.48%, a rate Douglas Insights anchors on the 7% organic growth Novonesis reported for Household Care. The enzyme supply side is sized in our Industrial Enzymes Market.
Why is home care chemicals demand rising while big detergent brands report flat volumes?
Home care chemicals volume grows 2.35% a year to 2035, faster than the 0% volume P&G reported for Fabric and Home Care, because new households in Asia and Africa buy their first machine detergents. Four drivers make up the 2.35-point volume leg.
Emerging-market household formation adds 1.05 points. Unilever reported Home Care underlying sales growth of 2.6% for 2025, with 2.2% from volume and 0.4% from price, and named Persil, Cif and Domestos among the performers. A 2.2% volume gain at a brand owner with large emerging-market sales is the clearest sign that tonnage still grows where washing machines and liquid cleaners are new purchases. Douglas Insights models Asia Pacific at 34.7% of 2025 demand, so first-time liquid detergent buyers there move the whole market. Each new household that switches from bar soap to a machine powder adds builder, surfactant and enzyme tonnes in one step.
Enzyme and bio-based reformulation adds 0.55 points. Novonesis grew Household Care 7% organically in 2025 to EUR 801.2 million, as reported in its 12M 2025 highlights. Every cold-wash claim pulls more protease and amylase per kilogram of detergent, and every bio-based surfactant switch adds a new tonne of ingredient rather than relabelling an old one. Commission Regulation (EU) 2023/2055 reinforces the shift: encapsulated fragrance and opacifier particles have to be replaced with soluble chemistry, which adds polymer and fragrance tonnes.
Surface hygiene adds 0.40 points. Disinfecting sprays, bleach gels and toilet cleaners kept a higher base after 2020, and Clorox, whose net sales reached USD 7.10 billion, sells mainly into that bleach and biocide pool. Douglas Insights expects bleaching agents and biocides to grow 3.05% a year, steady but not spectacular. Sodium hypochlorite, quaternary ammonium compounds and hydrogen peroxide carry that demand, and toilet cleaners alone take 7.8% of home care chemicals spend in our application split.
Laundry premiumisation adds 0.35 points. Liquid capsules, scent boosters and fabric care additives carry more polymer, fragrance and enzyme per wash than a scoop of powder, which is why fragrance ingredients grow 4.17% against 2.71% for builders. Industrial cleaning adds no points here; Stepan saw double digit growth there, but it sits outside the household scope. Together the four drivers sum to 2.35 points: 1.05 from households, 0.55 from reformulation, 0.40 from hygiene and 0.35 from premium laundry formats.
What headwinds cut home care chemicals tonnage as laundry detergents get concentrated?
Three headwinds remove 1.25 points from home care chemicals volume growth in the slower case, cutting the volume leg from 2.35% to 1.10% and the 2035 value to USD 27.9 billion. Compaction, brand-owner volume stagnation and reformulation cost are the brakes.
Compaction removes 0.55 points. A concentrated liquid or capsule washes the same load with less water, filler and solvent, so formulators buy fewer tonnes even when wash counts rise. Solvents, at 2.86% growth, and builders, at 2.71%, are the segments that lose most.
Flat brand-owner volume removes 0.45 points. P&G Fabric and Home Care volume was unchanged in fiscal 2025, and its results release of 29 July 2025 credited the 1% organic gain to innovation and mix, not tonnage. Stepan’s surfactant volume fell 1% on weaker commodity laundry and cleaning demand. Private label and trade-down also drag. When the largest buyers grow by price and mix alone, ingredient tonnes stall.
Reformulation cost removes 0.25 points. Replacing microplastic encapsulates under Regulation (EU) 2023/2055 means new stability testing and new registrations, and smaller European formulators delay launches rather than pay twice. Douglas Insights counts that delay as lost tonnage in the slower case only.
Where do laundry and dishwashing households use the most home care chemicals?
Asia Pacific is the largest home care chemicals region at USD 7.89 billion in 2025, 34.7% of the total, on Chinese, Indian and Southeast Asian laundry demand. The Middle East and Africa grows fastest at 5.21% a year, from a USD 1.16 billion base.
Asia Pacific rises at 4.62% to USD 12.4 billion in 2035 as first-time washing machine owners move from bar soap to powders and liquids. North America holds USD 6.35 billion, or 27.9%, and grows 2.96% to USD 8.50 billion; the region carries the highest share of unit doses and the slowest tonnage. Europe accounts for USD 5.48 billion at 3.18% growth, held back on volume by compaction but lifted on value by microplastics reformulation. Latin America starts at USD 1.87 billion and grows 4.21% to USD 2.82 billion, led by Brazilian powder detergent conversion to liquids.
The Middle East and Africa is the fastest region at 5.21% a year, reaching USD 1.93 billion, because urban households in Nigeria, Egypt and the Gulf add machine detergents and surface cleaners at the same time. The wildcard is Europe: if the microplastics restriction pushes fragrance and polymer reformulation faster than planned, value per tonne there rises faster than our 1.45% price leg.
How much do detergent formulators pay per tonne of home care chemicals?
The average home care chemicals price is USD 1,618 per tonne in 2025, rising 1.45% a year to USD 1,869 by 2035. Douglas Insights price bands, set from the ingredient mix in our model, run from about USD 300 per tonne for carbonate builders to USD 40,000 for fine fragrance materials.
Commodity anionic surfactants such as linear alkylbenzene sulfonate (LAS) and alcohol ether sulfate (AES) sell for about USD 1,300 to 2,100 per tonne, while specialty nonionics and bio-based glycolipids fetch USD 2,500 to 6,000. Builders and chelating agents span USD 300 to 1,100 per tonne for carbonate, silicate and zeolite, and more for citrate and biodegradable chelants. Detergent enzymes, sold as liquid formulations, realise USD 6,000 to 14,000 per tonne. Polymers and rheology modifiers sit at USD 2,200 to 4,500, solvents at USD 900 to 1,600, and fragrance ingredients at USD 15,000 to 40,000.
Mix, not list price, drives the 1.45% price leg. Each tonne of enzyme that displaces surfactant raises the average realised price, which is why Stepan could lift Surfactants net sales 9% while volume fell 1%. Douglas Insights keeps the leg below headline chemical inflation because brand owners tender surfactants and builders on annual contracts linked to feedstock indices.
Are enzymes taking surfactant load out of home care chemicals formulations?
Enzymes reach USD 4.09 billion of home care chemicals revenue by 2035, up from USD 2.18 billion, and our model shows them taking load from surfactants at a ratio worth tracking. A cold-wash liquid with a full enzyme package runs on less surfactant per load.
Douglas Insights expects the enzyme share to rise from 9.6% to 12.3% of home care chemicals revenue by 2035, while surfactants slip from 44.3% to 43.4%. Surfactants still add USD 4.30 billion of value over the decade, more than any other ingredient, so the swap is a slower share shift rather than a collapse. Washing machines with automatic dosing compound the effect; our Smart Washing Machine Market tracks that installed base.
What if detergent compaction speeds up: home care chemicals scenarios to 2035?
The base case reaches USD 33.14 billion in 2035 on 2.35% volume and 1.45% price growth, while the slower case ends at USD 27.9 billion and the faster case at USD 37.6 billion. Detergent compaction and emerging-market household growth separate them.
The slower case runs 1.10% volume and 0.95% price: compaction spreads to Asia, brand-owner volumes stay flat and smaller formulators delay reformulation under the microplastics restriction, in force since 17 October 2023. The faster case runs 3.25% volume and 1.85% price, with Africa and South Asia adopting machine liquids early and enzyme-rich cold-wash formats lifting value per tonne. Douglas Insights puts base-case consumption at 17.74 million tonnes by 2035.
Volume is the lever. Adding one point to annual volume growth lifts the 2035 home care chemicals value by USD 3.38 billion; removing one point lowers it by USD 3.10 billion. Published forecasts for home care chemicals sit between 4.6% and 6.2% a year; our 3.83% is below that band because we count tonnes at ingredient prices and hold the price leg near 1.5%.
Which EU microplastics and REACH rules govern home care chemicals formulators?
Commission Regulation (EU) 2023/2055, adopted on 25 September 2023 and in force from 17 October 2023, is the rule that most changes home care chemicals buying. It amends Annex XVII of REACH to restrict synthetic polymer microparticles, with a separate transitional period for detergents.
The restriction text on EUR-Lex treats microparticles used in detergents under paragraph 6 transitional periods, alongside cosmetics, whose dates run from 16 October 2027 for rinse-off products to 16 October 2029 for leave-on products. Formulators in home care chemicals therefore plan two reformulation waves: encapsulated fragrance and opacifiers first, then polymer additives. Registration under REACH adds a cost to every new surfactant or polymer molecule, which favours suppliers with large registered catalogues over small regional sulfonators.
Which laundry, dishwashing and toilet cleaner applications consume home care chemicals?
Laundry consumes 52.6% of 2025 home care chemicals spend, about USD 12.0 billion, because detergents and fabric conditioners use more surfactant, builder and enzyme per household than any other cleaning task. Dishwashing and surface cleaners follow, with toilet cleaners and air fresheners smaller.
Dishwashing takes 17.4%, or USD 3.96 billion, split between hand dish liquids rich in surfactants and automatic dishwasher tablets rich in builders and enzymes. Surface cleaners account for 16.9%, or USD 3.84 billion, carrying solvents, biocides and fragrance. Toilet cleaners use 7.8%, or USD 1.77 billion, mostly bleach and acid chemistry, and air fresheners take 5.3%, or USD 1.21 billion, largely fragrance ingredients and propellant-free carriers.
Douglas Exclusive: the Home Care Reformulation Pull Index
The Home Care Reformulation Pull Index is a Douglas Insights model built from 8 company-disclosed inputs: 4 brand-owner growth figures from P&G, Unilever, Henkel and Clorox, and 4 ingredient-supplier figures from Novonesis and Stepan. It measures whether ingredient suppliers grow faster or slower than the shelf they sell into.
The index divides each supplier’s 2025 growth by the average brand-owner growth of 0.625%, the mean of P&G volume at 0%, Unilever Home Care volume at 2.2%, Henkel Consumer Brands organic growth at 0.3% and Clorox sales at 0%, then scales the result to 100. A reading above 100 means the ingredient is gaining load per wash; below 100 means it is losing load.
| Ingredient signal | Supplier growth 2025 | Brand-owner baseline | Index (100 = shelf) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Detergent enzymes (Novonesis Household Care organic) | 7.0% | 0.625% | 106.3 |
| Surfactant sales (Stepan Surfactants net sales) | 9.0% | 0.625% | 108.3 |
| Surfactant tonnes (Stepan surfactant volume) | minus 1.0% | 0.625% | 98.4 |
The finding: enzymes score 106.3, gaining load per wash, while surfactant tonnes score 98.4, losing it, even though surfactant sales score 108.3 on price and mix. Home care chemicals value is moving from bulk surfactant tonnes to biological performance ingredients, about 7.9 index points apart in 2025. Douglas Insights reruns the index each year as the four brand owners report.
Which receipts and cross-checks support the home care chemicals tonnage count?
The model counts 14.06 million tonnes of home care chemicals in 2025 at USD 1,618 per tonne, which multiplies to USD 22.75 billion. Five regions and 7 ingredient segments reconcile to that total, and every input and cross-check behind it is listed below.
Inputs: 4 brand-owner disclosures giving 7 figures; 2 ingredient-supplier releases giving 6 figures; 1 EU regulation with 4 dates; and 4 published growth estimates used only to place the forecast. Regions sum to USD 22.75 billion in 2025 and to USD 33.14 billion in 2035 within USD 0.1 million. Segment 2035 values, each grown at its own rate, sum to USD 33.03 billion, within 0.34% of the top-down figure. Cross-check one: Stepan and Novonesis together, at an estimated USD 1.80 billion of home care sales, equal 7.9% of the market, consistent with a fragmented supply base. Cross-check two: published 2024 market sizes span USD 20.7 billion to USD 22.9 billion, and our 2025 figure of USD 22.75 billion sits at the top of that band, consistent with one more year of growth.
